Objectives Gender equity studies have shown that women are underrepresented in journal editor in chief positions, which confer major professional opportunities and influence. We sought to systematically investigate editor in chief gender and journal attributes within pathology. Methods We constructed a journal data set using the Scimago Journal & Country Rank and Clarivate Journal Citation Reports databases. We also included official journals of the major medical societies for the 12 pathology subspecialties recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The final data set included 126 journals. We obtained editor in chief gender, impact factor, publication model (ie, hybrid access vs open access), year of founding, and geographic location for all included pathology journals. Results Women made up only 18% of the 141 total editor in chief positions. This inequity was present irrespective of all pathology journal variables studied. Among 10 journals with 2 editor in chief positions, 5 had only men and 5 had 1 man and 1 woman. All 3 journals with 3 editor in chief positions had 2 men and 1 woman. Conclusions Women are significantly underrepresented among editor in chiefs across pathology journals. Paul Kemp, the Founding Editor-in-Chief of L&O Methods, will be stepping down after 22 years. The journal was created in 2002 as a second publication to ASLO's flagship journal, Limnology and Oceanography (L&O). L&O: Methods was designed to be an all-electronic publication, focusing on short reports, reviews, synthesis articles, and methods articles. The journal utilized newly available technology tools to streamline the submission and review process. Since its launch, L&O: Methods has published over 1200 articles and 15,000 pages. Biomedical research reporting guidelines provide a framework by which journal editors and the researchers who conduct studies can ensure that the reported research is both complete and transparent. With more than 16 different guidelines for the 11 major study types of medical and health research, authors need to be familiar with journal reporting standards. To assess the current endorsements of reporting guidelines for biomedical and health research, this study examined the instructions for authors (IFAs) of 559 biomedical journals by 11 prominent publishers that publish original research or systematic reviews/meta-analyses. Data from the above original sources were cleaned and restructured, and analyzed in a database and text miner. Each journal's instructions or information for authors were examined to code if any of five prominent reporting guidelines were mentioned and what form the guideline adherence demonstration took. Seventeen journals published the reporting guidelines. Four of the five reporting guidelines listed journals as endorsers. For journals with open peer review reports, a sample of journals and peer reviews was analyzed for mention of adherence to reporting guidelines. The endorsement of research guidelines by publishers and their associated journals is inconsistent for some publishers, with only a small number of journals endorsing relevant guidelines. Based on the analysis of open peer reviews, there is evidence that some reviewers check the adherence to the endorsed reporting guidelines. Currently, there is no universal endorsement of reporting guidelines by publishers nor ways of demonstrating adherence to guidelines. Journals may not directly inform authors of their guideline endorsements, making it more difficult for authors to adhere to endorsed guidelines. The substantial surge in the publication of journal articles across diverse academic disciplines on open and online platforms globally has given rise to the challenge of effectively managing bibliographic references. Accordingly, the study will focus on reference styles in library and information science, particularly concerning their awareness, availability of online citation tools, standardization, and comprehensive overview of all commonly preferred styles among LIS professionals. The study explored the reference styles adopted by publishers publishing LIS journals indexed in prominent global databases such as SCOPUS, Web of Science, LISA (Proquest), LISTA, and UGC-CARE (India). The top ten LIS journals indexed in SCOPUS and their reference styles were identified. The preferences of reference styles including Indian Bibliographic Standard, preferred publishers, and the rationale behind their choices were found through a global survey conducted among LIS professionals. The result shows, among LIS professionals, APA style, followed by MLA style and Harvard style, were the most preferred reference styles. Elsevier, followed by Springer, Taylor & Francis, Emerald, and other were among the most preferred publishers. The Indian Bibliographic Standard is used less due to a lack of awareness and adaptability by journals and their publishers and the non-availability of automatic citation tools. This paper provides information to LIS professionals about reference styles used by leading LIS journals indexed in global databases published by different publishers to inform, promote, make early decisions, and enhance knowledge in preparing references or bibliographies for writing research papers or theses ahead of time. Publishing is a significant part of the cultural, creative, and economic sectors. Its research, assessment, and forecasting require grounded, reliable, accurate, consistent, and comparable statistical data. Considering the lack of research in periodicals statistics and the relevance of publishing statistics, as well as the fact that in the Baltic countries, publishing statistics data are collected by institutions at the same level, the problem arises whether the national libraries' applied foundational recommendations and legal documents, as well as data collection methodology, can ensure data validity, reliability, comprehensiveness, and comparability. This article aims to examine and compare the data collection practices of periodical statistics in the Baltic States. The research object includes the legal foundation of publishing statistics in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, as well as the 2022 publishing statistics resources and official statistics data collections. UNESCO recommendations and International Organization for Standardization standards can be considered guidelines for such data collection and accounting. The legal foundation of publishing statistics consists of legal deposit laws, which must ensure the sources of statistical data. Even though publishing statistics data are collected by national libraries and the source of statistical data in all countries is legal deposits, the statistical data collections are not identical. Countries choose which data to collect, what criteria to apply, and in what form to present them. It is important to emphasize that data on the publishing industry are not presented in statistical collections, although their collection guidelines and presentation importance are highlighted in international recommendations and normative documents. Statistical data on electronic periodicals are provided only by Estonia. National libraries in the Baltic States are official statistics compilers, so summarized publishing statistics data are provided to national statistics institutions, opening new technological possibilities for data analysis and integration of new data. The collections of statistical data on newspapers and magazines can only be compared according to a few main criteria, as countries have chosen different statistical data presentation features, the main ones being the varying categorization and periodicity characteristics of newspapers and magazines. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop insight into the scholarly communications trends in hospitality and tourism management by looking at the practice of publishing Special Issues (SIs) in top-ranked hospitality and tourism management (HTM) academic journals: examining the relationship of SIs to journal impact as a measurement of quality, identifying some principal topics of SI and the trend of publishing SI as monographs. Design/methodology/approach: This paper consists of an analysis of 22 top-ranked HTM journals from 1995 to 2020, in-depth case studies reviewing studies in two top-ranked HTM journals and an examination of which publishers supplement their revenue by selling their special issues as monographs. This paper includes a substantial review of literature regarding special issue publishing within business academic journals. Findings: There was growth in the publication of HTM SI from 1995 to 2020, both in numbers and as a percentage of total issues. There is no evidence that SI are reducing impact within HTM journals; impact has grown exponentially since the mid-1990s. In one case, there was a significant increase in SI publication as well as in impact. The number of Regular Issues (RI) published increased during the same period but at a marginally lower rate. There is no evidence that SI are negatively affecting RI. The in-depth analysis of the two journals concurred with the above findings and suggested that SI studies discuss topics of the highest impact. SI increased the revenue of the publisher through monograph publishing. This practice also furthered the field by making SI available to be purchased as a monograph by nonsubscribers. Research limitations/implications: This study provides a deeper understanding of scholarly publishing in top-ranking HTM journals and provides a foundation for future research on HTM publishing practices. Its practical implications extend to practitioners who rely on HTM scholarship for dissemination of vital research that can guide or drive decision-making. This study also informs the critical question as to whether such research is compromised by publishing practices. Other practical implications include providing reassuring information to editors who publish SI that these issues do not appear to contribute to lower journal impact. For researchers who are considering submitting manuscripts to SIs, this study similarly implies that their paper should not be considered of lower value and that there is no indication that its impact will be lessened. Furthermore, the authors hope that this study encourages would-be guest editors to publish SI if they have held back because of quality/impact concerns. Finally, this paper may provide evidence to journal editors who do not regularly publish SI because of quality and impact concerns that they may reconsider this choice. Implications for HTM journal editors and guest editors include adding or increasing SI in their publishing practice will not decrease the journal's quality, while SI publishing also could contribute to the goals of their publication and increase revenues for the publishers. Researchers who may have been reluctant to publish in SI should be more inclined to submit to them or endeavor to become guest editors to explore avenues of developing their field. Originality/value: SI publication and impact within the field of hospitality and tourism scholarly communications are rarely discussed. Literature reviews on SI publication in business are also limited. Word templates exist for select journals, and their primary objective is to facilitate submissions to those journals, thereby optimizing editors' and publishers' time and resources by ensuring that the desired style (e.g., of sections, references, etc.) is followed. However, if multiple unrelated authors use the exact same template, a risk exists that some text might be erroneously cloned if template-based papers are not carefully screened by authors, journal editors or proof copyeditors. Elsevier Procedia® was used as an example. Select cloned text, presumably derived from MS Word templates used for submissions to Elsevier Procedia® journals, was assessed using Science Direct. Typically, in academic publishing, identical text is screened using text similarity software during the submission process, and if detected, may be flagged as plagiarism. After searching for "heading should be left justified, bold, with the first letter capitalized", 44 Elsevier Procedia® papers were found to be positive for vestigial template text. The integrity of the information in these papers has been compromised, so these errors should be corrected with an erratum, or in the case of extensive errors and vast tracts (e.g., pages long) of template text, papers should be retracted and republished. The academic publishing model is very inequitable currently – most commercial publishers demand exorbitant prices for access to journal articles, either through subscription or article processing charges. In this digital era, when publishing costs are negligible, and the peer review process is voluntary, it is unreasonable to have such high access barriers. In this article, we have explored the idea of an accessible and equitable knowledge dissemination platform using next-generation technologies and emerging models in publication to challenge the commercial publishers' oligopoly in knowledge dissemination. Some of the upcoming practices, open peer review systems, transparent research data practices, and finally leveraging the advancements in digital technologies in publishing can be effective in creating efficient, transparent and cost-effective publishing systems. Encouraged by these recent developments, we have explored the possibilities of launching a digital publishing platform in India. We have analysed the existing open-source technologies like Open Journal System (OJS) and compared them with proprietary models like Editorial Manager to understand the gaps in both and explored avenues to conceive a cost-effective digital publishing platform. We hope that the open-access digital publishing platform will help the Indian journals upgrade their publishing systems up to the international standard, if not better, and help researchers explore a non-commercial avenue to publish open access articles. The 21 authors of this study, 19 of whom are non-native English speakers, reflect on the barriers to publishing academic journal articles in top international journals. Each author responded to the same set of questions pertaining to educational (PhD) opportunities for emerging scholars, financial conditions for researchers, and challenges in publishing their work. Limited English language skills, lack of research funding, and different research topics were identified as the most significant barriers to publish in the journals. Recruiting volunteers or using electronic translations for accepted articles for journals, reducing software and subscription to academic journals costs, expanding journal scope, and providing guidance and collaboration across borders are possible measures to reduce the negative impact of the barriers. Predatory publishing is currently a critical problem for researchers, particularly with the continuous rise of online journals and the increasing challenge of distinguishing between journals that can be trusted and those which should be avoided. This article begins by providing an overview of predatory publishing, focusing specifically on its definition and impacts and the prevailing predatory practices current in scientific publications. Next, the article discusses how researchers can avoid publishing with predatory publishers. We recommend that researchers do not rely solely on watchlists, rather that they develop their own skills to enable them to detect predatory practices. The article centers on the challenges faced and the efforts made during the author's tenure as the director of the journal "Investigación y Educación en Enfermería." It emphasizes the goals set for the journal's growth, including enhancing its visibility, improving publication processes, and maintaining or upgrading its national classification. It states that during this period, various efforts were undertaken, such as the systematization of journal operations, technological upgrades.

The paper presents periodicals in the field of library and information science published between 2017 and 2021. The journals dealing with the field as their main or major topic were reviewed, as well as those that have established sections dedicated to librarianship, but are focused on other areas. The analysis is based on the research of sources via COBIB.SR database, and the titles with the hit of at least one issue published during the period 2017-2021 were included. The titles of serial publication available in the collection of the National Library of Serbia were reviewed, as well as those available online. The paper examines the current situation of the professional publishing and its importance for the development of the scientific discipline and practice. At the same time, journals addressing library practice along with other areas were analyzed – literature, arts, history and local topics. The text is an effort to examine the current trends related to publishing periodicals dealing with the theory and practice of librarianship. The results show that the number of scientific journals in 2021 increased compared to the previous period. However, significant number of serial publications issued during the analyzed period belongs to the group of professional magazines dealing with librarianship as their main or major topic. Overall, the analysis of Serbian periodicals on subjects related to library and information activities in the past period shows that they acted as means for active participation in scientific communication, exchange of professional experiences, and promotion of libraries. This study aims to determine the awareness and perceptions of Korean researchers regarding mandatory open access (OA) and OA publishing of publicly-funded research papers. In July 2019, Korean researchers who had published in Science Citation Index Expanded journals as first authors and corresponding authors participated in an online survey distributed via e-mail. A total of 1,172 valid responses were collected and analyzed using SPSS 18. The results indicated that the level of awareness of OA differed significantly based on occupation and research experience (p<0.001). Although 52.56% of the respondents had experienced OA publishing, only 22.35% had self-archiving experience. Regardless of the amount of publishing cost support, researchers showed a high level of willingness to publish OA articles. Yet, since the importance of impact factor was evaluated to be very high, at present OA publication might have a limited role as a publication platform. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Privacy policy is crucial in educating librarians about how vendors handle patron's data and what are their current privacy practices? Fewer have studied the content of library vendors' privacy policies for their readability score and privacy compliance. With this background, the study performed a comprehensive keyword-based, content analysis of 64 privacy policies from three category of library vendors (1) IT vendors (2) E-resource vendors (3) Publisher's cum bookseller's vendors. The study used the Flesch-Kinkaid grade level for readability score and evaluate their privacy compliance with the 11 privacy principles articulated from the India's Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 (Referred to as "PDPB" in this study). The results indicate low availability of privacy policies (n = 64, 41.29%) out of 155 library vendors. Overall, the average reading grade level on all categories of vendors are similar; they are written for readers above 12 grades and are suitable for college readers. Their privacy compliance is low in all categories, with average compliance of 3∼4 out of the 11 privacy principles. Similarly, the privacy compliance in each vendor's category is the highest for data collection, processing, and sharing principles. In contrast, it is the lowest for accountability, data retention, safeguarding children's data, users' consent and transparency. The article concludes with specific recommendations for vendors to overcome their readability and privacy compliance deficiency, thereby providing librarians with corrective measures when negotiating with vendors to protect patrons' privacy. The present study aims to investigate the trend and growth of Open Access (OA) journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) portal. The authors found that there are 17,379 indexed journals in 80 languages from 130 countries covering all fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, arts, and humanities. The study presents findings on the contribution to DOAJ by subjects, country, DOAJ seal, article processing charges (APC), and author publishing rights. The study found that medicine journals were highest in this portal and the majority of contributions came from Indonesia. It was also found that the majority of the journals allow the author to hold publishing rights and only 8% of OA journals received the DOAJ seal. The maximum numbers of OA journals have Creative Commons Attribution licences and the highest APC is Rs. 3,97,985. DOAJ is the main source of information in facilitating organized access to OA literature. It is recommended to raise a DOAJ special seal for practicing extra high-level commitment to OA publications. Background. In scholarly publishing, time-looping is the practice of assigning papers that were online-published at a specific point in time to post-dated journal volumes/issues. Objectives. This study investigated to what extent time-looping was practiced by journals, and whether this practice was likely to have increased the journal citation metrics. The journals in Financial Times' list of top 50 business and economics journals (known as the FT50 list) were used as the sample. Methods. All FT50 journals' websites were visited on the same date (February 15, 2022) to identify journals that practiced time-looping. The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and CiteScore values of the journals over the last ten years (2011-2020) were analyzed. Results. As of mid-February 2022 when the analysis was conducted, the practice of time-looping was identified for four FT50 journals, published by the same publisher. The time-loops ranged from 48 to 111 days (with an average of 79 days). Examining the JIF and the CiteScore values for these four journals over the last ten years, it was observed that the 2020 JIF values for these four journals saw a significant increase. The results of further analysis suggest that time-looping is a likely cause of this increase in JIF values. Purpose: Libraries still endeavor to achieve diversity in many areas, including collections. Although many barriers to realizing this goal still exist, there are changes that can be made to improve the current situation. This paper aims to examine those barriers and discusses some ways librarians, administrators and publishers can help build inclusive academic library collections. Design/methodology/approach: This paper will discuss the issues that the University of North Florida's Thomas G. Carpenter Library discovered while trying to find ways to build a racially and ethnically diverse academic collection. Findings: The lack of diversity in academic library collections has many causes, including inadequate institutional collection priorities, librarian bias, heavy workloads and the dearth of diverse voices in the publishing industry. Originality/value: Diversity, equity and inclusion are key concepts to improving how libraries operate. However, libraries have struggled to realize this vision in many areas. Donald A.B. Lindberg M.D., Director of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) from August 1984 to March 2015, had a remarkable vision for NLM's scope, goals, and function. This vision resulted in many external partnerships and initiatives with the publishing industry, commercial and non-profit, journal editors, and professional organizations. These partnerships ranged from ongoing collaboration and dialogue, such as the NLM Publisher's Committee and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). to the more practical, such as the creation of HINARI and the Emergency Access Initiative (EAI). Dr. Lindberg fostered partnerships outside the NLM to expand the use and reach of Library resources, including MEDLINE and ClinicalTrials.gov to support innovations in the processes that build them, and to improve the quality of biomedical journals. Dr. Lindberg also encouraged the use of technology to enhance medical information and supported the early development of fully interactive publications. Attitudes that contained a measure of skepticism and distrust faded as collaborators came to have a better understanding of both NLM and their partners. This chapter discusses these relationships and accomplishments that NLM achieved working with publishers and other creators and disseminators of medical information under Dr. Lindberg's leadership. Law journals permit submission of scholarly manuscripts to multiple journals concurrently, but biomedical journals strictly forbid submission of manuscripts to more than one journal at a time. Law journals may then compete for the publication of manuscripts. This article examines whether the single-submission requirement of biomedical journals may constitute restraint of trade in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act. When trying to manage their e-resources, librarians spend a significant amount of time adjusting their holdings in vendor knowledgebases to make sure that the content their library can access is selected properly. This is often a tedious process, which, extrapolated out to each content provider, can be a drain on library resources. A National Information Standards Organization (NISO) recommended practice provides a solution to this problem by facilitating the automatic transfer and retrieval of library-specific Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (KBART) holdings data between content providers and knowledgebases. In this presentation, Matthew Ragucci of Wiley presents a publisher's perspective on the work required to implement KBART Automation: Automated Retrieval of Customer Electronic Holdings, Andrée Rathemacher of the University of Rhode Island shares a librarian's opinion on the benefits and potential pitfalls of KBART Automation, and Stephanie Doellinger of OCLC addresses the topic from a knowledgebase supplier's point of view. The author reflects on the journal's fifth year as an open-access (OA) e-only journal using an open-source publishing platform and discusses what have happened in the 14 years since the launch of the Budapest Open Access Initiative in 2002 in the fields of policy, technology and publishing.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the accessibility of library resources and support services by distance learners at the Open University of Tanzania (OUT). The study utilized a survey approach in soliciting information from distance learners. A total of 33 learners from OUT responded to the survey. The study revealed that OUT offered several library services as well as library resources to distance learners. The resources identified as accessible to distance learners were books, journals, internet services, past examination papers, dissertations and theses, research guides, computers, and electronic resources. The study found out that there were challenges that hindered effective use of the library resources and services including high data cost, information overload, inadequate skills to evaluate information sources, password and login frustrations, lack of comprehensive online tutorials from OUT library, lack of information search skills, lack of distance librarian assigned to support remote students, lack of free, full text, lack of instructional resources and lack of university's account to access digital library resources from home. This study aims to understand the implication of the 80/20 rule in large academic library consortia. INFLIBNET initiative-UGC-Infonet is the largest academic consortia initiative in Indian higher education that provides services to 414 institutional members across the country. A total of eighteen publishers and aggregators (N = 6854 journals) from COUNTER usage data for the year 2011 was collected from the INFLIBNET Centre. Cumulative download and cumulative percentage of the journals were calculated from the downloaded counts to generate a Pareto chart using Microsoft Excel 2007. The result of the study suggests that the 80/20 rule in large consortia is truly, if not precisely in conformity, when consolidated usage of journals across eighteen (18) publishers are put together at 85%/15%. Contrastingly, differences in the result are observed when titles are analyzed individually according to the publishers demonstrating a reverse of the 80/20 principle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Every scientist is required to publish their work, a process that gives creditability to their findings and provides a platform for the real-life application of the findings. Although the conduct of experiments is the core of much scientific work, there is sadly a percentage of studies that are based on flawed designs or written by authors who do not understand how to robustly analyse the data they generate. The consequence is that when they attempt to publish in reputable journals, they often have their papers rejected. In other cases, authors may fail to consider the scope of a target journal, their papers are poorly written, or not formatted according to the journal's guidelines. These again lead to rejection. Overall, this presents a large cost to the research and development (R&D) sector, as some work will never get published, and therefore, the investment has yielded zero returns. In addition, the time spent revising papers adds to the overall cost of undertaking R&D. In many cases, better training can help to reduce these costs and significantly improve the scientific output of scientists.
