Background The purpose of the study was to investigate whether autistic traits predicted the presence and recurrence of self-harm and to determine any relationship mediated by the Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS), which composed of the social influence of negative life experiences on suicide, is referred to as "acquired capability", while proximal social risk factors are referred to as "thwarted belonging and perceived burdensomeness." Results We evaluated any interaction with the Autistic Quotient (AQ) score and self-harm whether it was explained by the thwarted belonging/perceived burdensomeness in the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ), victimization in the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire (OBVQ), and maltreatment in the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Communication and social skill as autistic traits predicted the presence of self-harm, yet the association vanished after including thwarted belonging and perceived burdensomeness, which are independent predictors of the presence of self-harm. Social skill and the sum score of autistic traits predicted the recurrence of self-harm, and the prediction was mediated largely by thwarted belonging and much less by perceived burdensomeness. Conclusions The unique interaction of autistic traits and IPTS increases the risk of self-harm. Within autistic traits, social skills, in particular, are likely associated to attempts at self-harm through acquired capability. The results of this research were identified as attention to loneliness and social support may be helpful in reducing self-harm in adolescents with autistic traits.

Background Recent guidelines emphasize the importance of functional outcomes in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Here, we assess the functional outcomes of the oral delivery system of osmotic-release methylphenidate (OROS-MPH) and atomoxetine (ATX) from the retrospective review of the chart for the last 2 years in the clinic. Results Linear mixed-effects models were performed with outcome measures of difference in ADHD symptoms and functional impairment. After 9–12 weeks, OROS-MPH and ATX were statistically equivalent for total Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Parent Report (WFIRS-P) scores (difference in slope is β = 0.004, p = 1.000). However, OROS-MPH was superior to ATX in terms of school domain (difference in slope is β = 0.139, p β = 0.103, p Conclusions Optimal management should monitor functional progress in ADHD beyond the core symptoms. As expected, ADHD medications provide a distinct pattern of functional improvement. Pharmacotherapy alone offers promising and reliable outcomes to improve school and family functions in ADHD. Some functional improvements did not respond to the medication; therefore, many of the techniques derived from behavioral interventions should be considered.

This 8-week longitudinal study examined predictors of response to simple behavioral intervention in primary enuresis nocturna (PEN). A total of 154 children, aged 8–18 years, diagnosed with PEN were evaluated. The results indicated that lack of constipation, milder enuresis severity, and higher bladder capacity are the primary predictors of good treatment response, and lower family dysfunction is the most robust familial predictor. Lack of constipation is the main predictor with unique variance in multiple regression. Specialists should be aware of conditions that hinder the success of simple behavioral intervention before implementing costly treatments. In treatment-refractory cases, it is important to examine each child for constipation. Family-centered approaches can be helpful if used in parallel with behavioral treatments.

There are no clear data in the literature to distinguish circumscribed behavior from actions resulting from sexual arousal. In this case, we had to assess the criminal responsibility of an adolescent girl diagnosed with Asperger syndrome according to DSM-IV who had been charged with possession of child pornography and sharing this material on social media. This case is a reminder that circumscribed behavior in Asperger syndrome may cause forensic incidents or misunderstandings. When evaluating sexual offenses, it is critical to receive a detailed history of sexual development, the motives of actions, and social-sexual knowledge in order to distinguish circumscribed behavior from sexually deviant behaviors.

WOS: 000504845000007 Objective: Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) are practical inflammation parameters. In bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), these parameters were reported higher than in healthy controls (HC). We aim to compare NLR, PLR, MLR in HC and patients with MDD and BB-manic episode. Method: Forty-six patients with MDD and 43 patients with BD hospitalized between 2013 and 2017 and 40 HC were included in the study. White blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, and monocyte numbers were entered retrospectively from complete blood counts made at the time of admission, and NLR, PLR, and MLR were calculated from these. Results: NLR and PLR were revealed higher in MDD than HC. NLR and neutrophil values were higher in BD than HC, and there was a positive correlation between NLR and hospitalization period of patients with BD. Conclusion: Findings of our study supported the inflammation hypothesis for MDD and BD in adolescents. Larger-scale studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

In this study, it was aimed to determine the factors affecting the duration of admission in children and adolescents receiving treatment in Samsun Ondokuz Mayys University Medical Faculty Psychiatry Clinic. Methods: Hospital records of 194 children and adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years who were hospitalized at Ondokuz Mayys University Psychiatric Service between January 2013 and December 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. ANOVA and logistic regression analyzes were performed for clinical and sociodemographic data that could effect hospitalization times and multiple admission. Results: 138 of the patients were female and 56 were male. Major depressive disorder patients (n: 79, 41.1%) and the average duration of hospitalization were 8.43 days. The group with the longest mean duration of admission was the Psychotic Disorder group (n: 17, mean: 19.92 days, p: 0.01). In logistic regression analysis for multiple risk factors, Female gender (OR: 2.02) and MDD diagnosis (OR: 1.51) were found to be risk factors for multiple admission. Discussion: In our study, it was observed that the presence of Major Depresive Disorder and female gender was a risk factor for multiple admission. Clinical and sociodemographic features of the disease can be predictive of hospitalization within the treatment plan.
