Oryantiring, sporcuların önceden belirlenen bir arazide veya şehir içinde belirli noktalara yerleştirilen hedefleri harita yardımıyla bulmasını içeren bir spordur. Performansın zamana bağlı olarak ölçüldüğü bu sporda, fiziksel dayanıklılığı, zihinsel süreçlerle ve çevreye adapte olma yeteneğiyle birleştirmek ve bunları doğru şekilde optimize etmek önemlidir. Bu seçimleri en iyi şekilde gözlemleyebileceğimiz çıktıların başında, bir hedeften diğerine giderken seçtikleri rotalar gelmektedir ve her bir rota kendine özgü çevresel karakteristiklere sahiptir. Dolayısıyla sporcuların her bir adımda bu karakteristikleri iyi bir şekilde analiz edip, fiziksel kuvvetlerini harita okuma becerileriyle birleştirmeleri ve bunun sonucunda kendileri için en uygun rotayı seçmeleri gerekmektedir. Bu tezde, rota seçiminde etkili olan bileşenler araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla, Türkiye Oryantiring Federasyonu tarafından düzenlenen bir oryantiring yarışı parkurundan, içinde küresel konumlama sistemi bulunan (GPS) saatler aracılığıyla, sporcu verileri elde edilmiştir. Toplanan veriler nicel ve nitel yöntemlerle incelenerek, sporcuların davranışlarına dair genel bir kavrayış elde edilmiş ve sporcuların karar vermesinde modellenebilir ve özneye bağlı etmenler ayrımı yapılmıştır. Modellenebilir bileşenlerden mesafe ve arazi yüzeyini temel alan ve en kısa mesafeyi hesaplayan bir model oluşturulmuş ve sonrasında sporcuların davranışlarıyla ne kadar uyumlu olduğu incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, sonuçlar çeşitli istatistiki analizlerle de desteklenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre sporcuların karar vermesinde çevresel değişkenlerin büyük bir rol oynadığı ve model performansının kısa mesafeli rotalarda, bilişsel yükü azaltma ihtiyacı daha çok olan uzun soluklu rotalara göre daha isabetli olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Orienteering is a sport where athletes need to find located targets at certain points on a predetermined terrain or in the city with the help of a map. In this sport where performance is measured with time, it is important to combine their physical endurance with mental processes and their ability to adapt to the environment and optimize them correctly. One of the outcomes that we can best observe these choices is the routes chosen and each route has its own environmental characteristics. Therefore, athletes need to analyze these characteristics well and as a result, they need to choose the most suitable route for themselves. In this thesis, the components affecting route selection are investigated. For this purpose, athletes' data was obtained through GPS containing watches from an orienteering race held by Turkey Orienteering Federation. The collected data were examined by quantitative and qualitative methods, and a general understanding of athletes' behavior was obtained and the distinction of modelable and subject-dependent factors in decision making of athletes was made. From the modelable components, a model that computes the shortest distance based on the distance and terrain surface has been created and then its compatibility with the behaviors of athletes was examined. Additionally, the results were supported by various statistical analyzes. According to the results of the study, environmental variables play a major role in the decision-making of athletes and model performance is more accurate in short-distance routes than long-distance routes in greater need of reducing the cognitive load. 118

Disleksinin farklı dillerde kendini farklı şekillerde gösterdiğine dair kanıtlar gittikçe artmaktadır. Okumanın öğretiliş şeklinde dayalı olarak, Türkçede okuma güçlüğü çeken öğrencilerin sergiledikleri güçlükler İngilizce konuşan öğrencilerin yaşadığı güçlüklerden farklı olabilir. Okuma sürecinde hecenin bir okuma birimi olarak yer aldığına dair literatürde destek bulunmasa da Türkiye'de öğrencilere hecelerin nasıl okunduğunun öğretildiği ve öğrencilerinde bu stratejiyi özellikle erken dönemde aktif bir biçimde kullandıkları açıktır. Kelimelerin hece hece çözümlenmesi doğal olarak sözcüğün alt birimleri olan hecelerine bölünmesini gerektirir. Hece uzunlukları değişken olduğu için, kendisi de harflere karşılık gelen seslerin çözümlenmesine dayalı olan hecelerin çözümlenmesi sürecinde problem belirli bir heceyi oluşturmak için hangi harflerin bir araya getirileceğine karar verilmesine dönüşür. Bu durum kelime okuma sürecindeki yapılabilecek hataların da kelimeyi oluşturan hecelerin sayısı ve karmaşıklığının artışına bağlı olarak artacağı varsayımını gerektirir. Kaç harfin bir hece oluşturmak için bir araya getirilmesi gerektiğine karar vermek ve o harflerin kelimenin kalanını oluşturan harflerden izole edilerek seslendirilmesi bu süreçte belirleyicidir. Mevcut çalışma kelimenin hecelerine bölünmesi probleminin öğrencinin adına çözülmüş olmasının etkilerini sınamış ve bunun anlamlı bir şekilde etkili olduğu sonucuna varmıştır. Yardımlı okuma durumunda, deneklerin hece ve kelime okuma performansları istatiksel olarak anlamlı bir şekilde artarken, hata sayıları düşmüştür. Sonuçların Türkçede okuma güçlüklerine farklı bir anlayış getirmesi ve mevcut problemin çözümü yolunda daha etkin müdahale yöntemlerinin oluşturulmasına yardımcı olması umulmaktadır. There is a growing body of evidence supporting the idea that dyslexia exhibits itself differently in different languages. Based on how reading is taught in Turkish Language, the symptoms exhibited by students with reading difficulties may be different than the ones exhibited by English speaking students. Even though there is no support for the role of reading syllables as a reading unit in the literature, it is clear that the students in Turkey are taught how to read syllables and are actively using the strategy of reading a word syllable by syllable in their early reading development. Decoding words syllable by syllable, naturally, requires segmentation of the words into their subunits, namely syllables. During the slow and struggling serial decoding of syllables, which is also based on serial decoding of phonemes to corresponding graphemes, the problem is transformed into bringing the correct number of phonemes together since the syllable length is not constant. It entails an increase in the number of the mistakes while reading a word in relation to its complexity in terms of the number and the variability of the syllables it includes. Deciding how many phonemes are supposed to be brought together and isolating them from the other graphemes in the word until the decoding of the syllable finishes is of critical importance during this process. The current study tested and found significant effects of segmenting the words into its syllables on behalf of the learner. The results suggest that aiding the segmentation process significantly improved the pronunciation of the syllables and words and decreased the number of mistakes during reading. It is hoped the results will help a better understanding of reading difficulties in Turkish, which in turn might help the development of more effective intervention techniques to the problem at hand. 61

Bilişsel sistemin bilgiyi gerçek zamanlı olarak nasıl işlediği, deneysel psikoloji ve bilişsel bilimler alanlarında önemli araştırma konularından bir tanesidir. Bilişsel işlem olgusunun farklı yönlerini araştırmak için bu güne kadar çeşitli ölçütler ve yazılım araçları önerilmiştir. Bu yöntemlerden biri olan fare izleyici, bilişsel görevler sırasında katılımcıların fare hareketlerini kaydederek araştırmacıların, motor tepkilerin dinamik açılımı hakkında veri toplamasına izin verir. Bu çalışmada `etki-tepki uyumluluk etkisi` olarak bilinen Simon etkisi fare izleyici yaklaşımı ile çeşitli koşullarda tekrarlanarak fare izleme yöntemiyle ne tür bilgiler elde edilebileceği incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla tepki alternatiflerinin sol/sağ üst köşelerden ziyade alt köşelere yerleştirildiği deney tasarım faktörlerinin fare izleme verileri üzerindeki etkisi incelenmiştir. Buna ek olarak, katılımcıların deneyin ortasına kadar belirli bir renk-yön ilişkisine (örneğin yeşil-sol ve kırmızı-sağ) maruz kaldığı, ve deney ortasında bu ilişkinin tersine çevrildiği tersine Simon etkisini içeren ek bir deney yapılmıştır. Understanding how the cognitive system processes information in real-time is one of the key concerns for researchers in experimental psychology and cognitive science. Several measures and software tools have been proposed to explore different aspects of cognitive processing phenomena. One of these methods, mouse-tracking, allows researchers to collect data about the dynamic unfolding of motor responses by recording the participants' mouse movements during cognitive tasks. In the present study, we replicated the Simon effect, which is known as the `stimulus-response compatibility effect` in a Mouse tracking paradigm. We investigated the impact of design factors on Mouse-tracking data by placing the response alternatives at the bottom corners rather than at the top. We also performed an additional experiment, including the reverse Simon Effect. Consistent with previous studies, the mouse tracker experiments conducted in this thesis showed a significant stimulus-response compatibility effect while the response directions towards the left and right corners are not entirely symmetric in the conflict cases. On the other hand, switching the response mapping to top-to-bottom has increased the asymmetry between left and right cases during conflict trials. Lastly, the reversal effect was observed vividly in the case of y-flips, which seemed to be the best indicator for the process of adjusting to the new color-response pairing. 79

Bu çalışma grup göz-izi etkileşiminin kişilerin güzellik yarışması oyunundaki kararları, karar verme süreleri ve göz hareketleri üzerindeki etkisini araştırmaktadır. Deney, hiç göz-izi olmaması durumundan her katılımcının bakış konumunun diğer katılımcıların ekranında canlandırıldığı tam göz-izi koşulları arasında değişen farklı göz-izi paylaşım koşulları yaratmak amacıyla Grup Göz Izleme (GET) platformunda tasarlanmıştır. Güzellik yarışması oyunundaki kararları yönlendirdiği düşünülen çapa atma etkisinin, katılımcıların birbirlerinin göz hareketlerine yönelik farkındalıklarının artmasından etkileneceği beklenmektedir. Göz-izi paylaşımının göz hareketleri örüntüsü üzerinde bir etkisi olmadığı ve bireylerin tercihlerine dayanarak verdikleri değer kararlarının göz-izi koşulları arasında farklılaşmadığı bulunmuştur. Ama, katılımcılara sunulan bütün yarışma türleri için karar süresinin anlamlı bir şekilde farklılaştığı görülmüştür. Tahminler ve göz hareketlerinde fark bulunmaması, tekrarlı oyundan doğan tetiktelik seviyesinin azalmasıyla kısmen açıklanabilir. Bütün göz-izi kosullarında daha uzun karar verme süresinin olması kandırma stratejilerinden ve diğer oyuncuların göz-izi yoluyla ortaya çıkan davranışlarına göre `tatmin edici` tahminin dinamik yeniden çapa atmadan kaynaklanmış olabilir. The present study investigates the effect of group gaze-cue interaction on the decisions, decision times and eye-movements of the participants in the game of beauty contest. The experiment is designed in the Group-Eye Tracking (GET) platform to create different gaze-cue sharing conditions, ranging from no gaze-cue to all gaze-cue conditions where each participant's gaze location is visualized on all other participants' screens. It is hypothesized that the anchoring effect, which is argued to guide the decisions in the beauty contest task, would be influenced by the increasing awareness of the participants regarding each others' eye movements preceding their decisions. The results indicated that there was no gaze-cue sharing effect on the eye movement patterns and no significant difference was observed among the gaze-cue conditions for the decided value derived from individual choices. However, for all contest types it was found that decision times are significantly higher in the all gaze-cue condition. The indifference observed for guesses and eye-movements can be partly accounted by the reduced alertness due to repeated rounds of play. Higher decision times in the all gaze-cue condition might be due to the deception strategies that emerged and the dynamic re-anchoring of the `satisficing` guess according to other players' behaviors revealed through their gaze-cues. 89

Bu çalışma, insanların önceki deneyimlerinden elde ettiği bilgilerin, ödül olmayan bir oyun ortamındaki insan başarısı üzerindeki etkilerini bulmayı ve daha sonra insan performansını bir pekiştirmeli öğrenme yöntemiyle karşılaştırmayı ve bu yöntemi insan davranışlarına ve performanslarına, elde edilen verilerin kullanılması ile, daha da yakınlaştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla, basit bir 2B oyunun farklı versiyonları kullanılmış ve 32 katılımcıdan veri toplanmıştır. Deney sonunda, nesnelerin ve renklerin anlamı gibi önceki bilgilerin insan performansı üzerinde etkisi olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Pekiştirmeli öğrenme yöntemleri ile eğitilen ajanın ise aynı oyunu bitiremediği görülmüştür. Performansı arttırmak ve insan benzeri davranışları elde etmek için çeşitli denemeler yapılmıştır. Bunlardan birinde, nesneler hakkında önceden bilgi edinilmesi ve onlarla etkileşimin sağlanması için mini oyunlar hazırlanmıştır. Bir başka denemede, katılımcılardan toplanan oyun verileriyle bir model oluşturulmuş ve bu model pekiştirmeli öğrenme algoritması için bir keşif stratejisi olarak kullanılmıştır. Sadece insan verilerinin bir keşif stratejisiolarak kullanıldığı durumda, pekiştirmeli öğrenme ajanı oyunu bitirmeyi başarmıştır. Pekiştirmeli öğrenme algoritmasının performansı arttırılmış olmasına rağmen, insan benzeri davranış gözlenmemiştir. Sonuç olarak insanların sahip olduğu önceki bilgilerin oyun performanslarını etkilediği görülmüştür. Pekiştirmeli öğrenme yöntemleri kullanılarak eğitilen ajanın ise bu tip bir bilgiye sahip olmasının uygulama noktasında kolay olmadığı görülmüştür. Son olarak ajanın eğitiminde insan verileri kullanıldığı durumda dahi insan benzeri davranış gözlemlenmemiştir. This study aims to find out the effect of prior knowledge on the success of humans in a non-rewarding game environment, and then to compare human performance with a reinforcement learning method in an effort to observe to what extent this method can be brought closer to human behavior and performance with the data obtained. For this purpose, different versions of a simple 2D game were used, and data were collected from 32 participants. At the endof the experiment, it is concluded that prior knowledge, such as the meaning of objects and colors, have an impact on human performance. It was observed that the reinforcement learning agent failed to finish the same game.Various attempts have been made to improve performance and to achieve human-like behavior. In one of these, mini-games were prepared to introduce prior knowledge of the objects and the interaction with them. In another trial, a model is created with the game data collected from participants, and the agent is trained using this model as an exploration strategy. Only when the human data is used as an exploration strategy, the agent succeeded in finishing the game. Although the performance of the reinforcement algorithm is increased, human-like behavior is not observed. The conclusion is that it is more meaningful to consider prior knowledge within the context ofexploration strategy, and having prior knowledge is not enough in achieving human-like behavior. 58

İşleyen bellek eğitimi, çocuklar, yaşlılar, bilişsel sorunu olan bireyler hatta yüksek düzeyde bilişsel beceri gerektiren meslek grupları gibi pek çok farklı kesimin çeşitli üst düzey bilişsel faaliyetlerdeki performanslarını geliştirmek için etkili bir araç olarak görülmektedir. Her ne kadar işleyen bellek eğitimi müdahalelerinin etkililiği tartışılan bir konu olsa da çalışmalarda n-geri işleyen bellek eğitiminin, işleyen bellek kapasitesini ve muhakeme becerilerini geliştirdiği görülmüştür, bu da n-geri görevinin yakın ve uzak aktarım etkisine işaret etmektedir. İşleyen belleğin sözlü çeviri mesleğindeki önemli rolünü dikkate alarak bu tez sözlü çeviri öğrencilerini hedefleyerek n-geri işleyen bellek eğitiminin yakın, orta ve uzak aktarım etkileriyle birlikte ardıl çeviriye olabilecek muhtemel etkisini kapsamlı bir şekilde incelemeyi amaçlamıştır. Davranışsal veri toplama metotlarıyla birlikte optik beyin görüntüleme tekniği olan işlevsel yakın kızılötesi spektroskopisi (fNIRS) tekniği kullanılarak uzunlamasına çalışma düzeni oluşturulmuştur. Katılımcılara eğitim öncesi ve sonrasında ayrıca eğitimin bitişinden üç ay sonra bir dizi test uygulanmıştır (n-geri ve ikili n-geri görevleri, harf ve sayı dizisi testleri, okuma dizisi/aralığı testi, Bochum Matris Testi (BOMAT), kısa ardıl çeviri). Bulgular n-geri grubunun aktif kontrol grubuna kıyasla işleyen bellek kapasitesinin artmasıyla yakın ve uzak aktarım testleri ve özellikle de ardıl çeviride daha yüksek performans gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Gözlemlenen bu etki bilginin tutulması ve güncellenmesi ve de dikkat gibi işleyen bellek süreçlerinin bu tür görevlerde ortak olduğunu göstermektedir. Prefrontal kortekssin özellikle dorsolateral ve dorsomedial prontal korteks bölgelerinde gözlemlenen nöral aktivite n-geri eğitimi ve ardıl çevirideki ortak bilişsel süreçleri yansıtmaktadır, bu gözlem de ardıl çevirideki görülen performans artışı ve artan nöral etkililik ile desteklenmektedir. Bu bağlamda tez bulgularının alana özgün ve değerli katkıları olacağına inanılmaktadır. Working memory training is seen as an effective tool for enhancing performance during a variety of high level cognitive tasks for different groups such as children, older people, and individuals with cognitive problems as well as practitioners of highly cognitive demanding professions. Even though there has been some controversy regarding the efficiency of working memory training interventions, it has been shown that n-back working memory training results in improvements in working memory capacity as well as in reasoning skills which points out that it yields both near and far transfer effects. Considering the crucial role of working memory in interpreting profession, this thesis targeted interpreting students in order to investigate transfer and maintenance effects of n-back working memory training through a comprehensive analysis of near, moderate, far transfer effects and possible transfer to consecutive interpreting. Combining behavioural data collection methods and fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) as an optical brain imaging technique, the thesis was designed as a longitudinal study in which participants completed a series of tests (n-back and dual n-back tasks, letter and digit span tasks, reading span task, Bochum Matrices Test (BOMAT), short consecutive interpreting) before and after the training as well as three months after the completion of the training sessions. The findings revealed that compared to an active control group, n-back group had larger performance gains in near and far transfer tasks, and more importantly in consecutive interpreting scores as a result of enhanced working memory capacity, suggesting that common working memory processes such as maintenance and updating of information and attention are employed in the tasks. Significant neural activity patterns observed in prefrontal cortex especially in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex reflect the shared cognitive processes of n-back training and consecutive interpreting, which is supported by performance improvements in consecutive interpreting and increased neural efficiency. In this regard, it is believed that findings of this thesis will have valuable and original contributions to the field. 205

Çocuklar alet kullanımında başarılı olsa da bütün alet-bağlantılı davranışlarda yetkin değillerdir, özellikle de alet yapımında. Bu tezin en nihai amacı bilişsel ve sosyal faktörleri de göz önünde bulundurarak insanların alet yapımı davranışına yeni bir bakış getirmektir. Bunun yanında bu tezde, çocukların alet yapımını kolaylaştırıcı etkenlerin bulunması amaçlanmıştır. Bu motivasyonlar doğrultusunda 'kanca testi' kullanılarak beş deney yürütülmüştür. Bu testte katılımcıların, uzun bir şişenin içinde bulunan küçük bir bakraçtaki çıkartmaya ulaşabilmek için onlara verilen materyali kanca şekline getirerek bakracı şişenin içinden çıkarmaları gerekmektedir. Deney 1'in sonuçları göstermiştir ki çocuklar spontane alet inovastonunda büyük zorluk çekmektedir. Fakat yaşça daha büyük olan çocuklar, alet üzerinde yapılan modifikasyonları sosyal olarak gördükten sonra alet yapımında daha başarılı olmuştur. Diğer yandan, çocukların yönetici işlevlerinin ketleme (inhibition) kapasitesi ve hiyerarşik zihinsel temsiller oluşturma yetisi, onların sosyal öğrenme sonrası alet yapımı sonuçlarının yordayıcıları olmuştur. Yetişkinlerin alet inovasyonu ve alet seçimi, aletlerin ne kadar göze-çarpan bir sağlarlığı (affordance) olduğuna dayanırken , 5 ve 6 yaşındaki çocuklar alet ile test arasında aşinalık olduğu durumda alet yapım sürecinde daha başarılı olmuşlardır (Deney 2 ve 3). Ayrıca bu deneyde, hiyerarşik temsiller oluşturma ve çeşitli-ıraksak düşünmenin (divergent thinking) alet yapım sürecindeki anlamlı rolü gösterilmiştir. Deney 4'te, 5 ve 6 yaş arası çocukların ikili iletişim halindeyken alet yapımında – tek başına yapmalarına göre– daha başarılı oldukları gösterilmiştir. Deney-5'te alet yapım sürecinde Yeni Zelanda'lı çocuklar ile Türkiyeli çocuklar arasında anlamlı bir fark olmadığını gösterilmiştir. Children are proficient tool users; however, pre-school children are not proficient in every aspect of tool-related behaviors, in particular tool making. Considering the cognitive and social abilities of humans, this thesis ultimately aims to provide a new way of looking at human tool making. In addition, it is aimed to find facilitative factors in the process of tool making in children. Based on these motivations, five experiments were conducted using the 'hook task', in which children could make a hook shape with the given tools in order to pull a bucket out of a tall tube to reach a sticker. Result of the Experiment-1 showed that spontaneous tool innovation was very difficult for children. However, older children were better in tool making after observing modifications socially. On the other hand, tool making after social learning was predicted by inhibition capacities of executive functions and hierarchical representational abilities. In Experiment-2 and 3, we found that while adults based tool innovation and selection on the salience of the affordance of the tools, 5 and 6-year-old children were better in the process of tool making with familiar tool-task relation. We also showed the significant role of hierarchical representation and divergent thinking in the process of tool making. In Experiment-4, we found that 5 and 6-year-old children were better in the process of tool making in the dyadic condition compared to the individual condition. In Experiment-5, we demonstrated that there was no significant difference in the process of tool making between New Zealand and Turkish children in dyadic tool making. 266

Katılımcılar simültane bir ¸sekildeyapboz formatında hazırlanmı¸s akı¸skan zeka görevine angaje olmu¸slarkenbeyin hemodinamikleri NIRS (kızıl-ötesi tayfölçümü) cihazı ile ölçülmü¸stür.Bu çalı¸smanın sonucunda dorsolateral prefrontal korteks ve dorsomedialprefrontal korteks bölgelerine yakın beyin bölgelerinde aktivasyon veba˘gda¸sımlılı ˘ga rastlanmı¸stır. Buna ek olarak, ortak olarak yapılan görevinzorlu˘gunun bu ba˘gda¸sıklı ˘ gı arttırdı˘ gı gözlemlenmi¸stir. Several studies have shown that executing the same task simultaneously cancreate synchronization among participants' brain hemodynamics. In thisthesis, we examined multiple participants' brain hemodynamics while theyare engaged in cooperative Sandia matrices (free version Raven's matrices)task that requires them to coordinate their gaze position to reach informationneeded to solve the given puzzle. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS) hyperscanning to observe the brain hemodynamics of twoparticipants simultaneously while they are engaged in a joint task. We foundthat, forcing people to cooperate in a fluid intelligence task increases behavioraland neural coherence between them. We found increase activation andcoherence in areas close to dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and dorsomedialprefrontal cortex. Furthermore, we found that the difficulty of the joint taskenhances the neural coherence between people. These finding implies thatjointly solving a problem causes a degree of neural synchrony among peopleand the degree of synchrony increases with the difficulty of the problem. 73

İnsanların algıları sosyal eğilimlerini önemli ölçüde etkilemektedir. Bu araştırmada spesifik olarak çekicilik algısının etkileri incelenmektedir. Bu araştırmanın amacı algılanan çekiciliğin, flört uygulaması kullanan kişilerde, cinsel birliktelik yaşamak isteğine ve korunmalı/korunmasız cinsellik eğilimlerine olan etkisini araştırmaktır. Flört uygulamalarında katılımcıların karşılacağı profillerde bir çok kontrol edilemeyen değişken bulunmaktadır (örneğin, yaş, ortak arkadaşların olması ya da olmamaması gibi). Deneysel kontrolü artırabilmek için, bu çalışmada kullanılmak üzere, Unity3D kullanılarak, ImeetU adı verilen bir flört uygulaması simülasyonu geliştirilmiştir. İki öncü çalışma (n1=64, n2=61) ile sahte profil üretmede kullanılacak fotoğraflardaki kişiler algılanan çekicilik, güvenilirlik, rastgele cinsel ilişkide bulunma ihtimalleri, uzun dönemli ilişki yaşamayı isteme ihtimalleri açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Öncü çalışmalarda internet üzerinden veri toplanmış, ana çalışma (n3=39) ise Bilişsel Bilimler bölümünde (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi, Ankara) gerçekleştirilmiştir. Deney öncesinde katılımcılara görecekleri profillerin sahte olduğu bilgisi verilmemiştir. Deneyin sonucunda, eşleşilen partnerlerin algılanan çekicilik düzeyinin, hem kadın hem erkek katılımcıların cinsel birliktelik yaşama isteğini önemli ölçüde etkilediği gözlenmiştir. Artan/azalan cinsel birliktelik isteği, eşleşilen partnerin artan/azan algılanan çekiciliği ile birlikte gözlenmiştir. Yanı sıra, erkek kullanıcılar için algılanan çekiciliğin kondom kullanma ihtimalleri ile ters ilişkisi olduğu gözlenmiştir. Kadın kullanıcılar için ise eşleştikleri algılanan çekicilik değerlerinin, kondom kullanma ihtimallerini önemli ölçüde etkilemediği görülmüştür. Human social intentions are heavily influenced by their perceptions of others. In this study, the effect of perceived attractiveness is of particular interest. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of perceived attractiveness on the likelihood of wanting to have sex and the likelihood of using condom among dating application users. In real dating application environments, there would be many uncontrolled variables (e.g., age, not/having common friends etc.) related to the profiles that the participants will see. To have more experimental control, the dating application simulation, named as ImeetU, was developed for this study by using Unity3D. Fake profiles are created with the face photos which were rated in terms of attractiveness, trustworthiness, promiscuity and interest in a long-term (committed) relationships via two pre-studies (n1=64, n2=61, respectively). The pre-studies were conducted online while the main study (n3=39) was conducted at the Cognitive Science Department, Middle East Technical University, Ankara. The participants were not informed that the profiles that they will see on ImeetU are not real. The first finding of the main study was that perceived attractiveness of the matched partner significantly affects the likelihood of wanting to have sex for the participants of both genders. Higher/lower likelihood of wanting to have sex was observed with higher/lower perceived attractiveness of the matched partner. Secondly, for males, perceived attractiveness of the matched partner significantly and inversely affects the likelihood of condom use. Considering females, perceived attractiveness does not significantly affect the likelihood of condom use. 195

Üretken ve gelişen bir toplumun ortaya çıkmasında o toplumu oluşturan bireylerin arasındaki başarılı iletişim ve ortak eylemler oldukça önemlidir. İnsanlar arasındaki eşgüdüm bir toplumun askeri ve politik alanları gibi farklı kademelerinin yanısıra insanların günlük hayatlarında birlikte söyledikleri şarkı, birlikte yaptıkları dans ve en basit örnek olarak karşılıklı olarak sırayla etkileşime girdikleri durumlar (ör. karşılıklı konuşma ve dinleme) gibi toplumsal etkileşimin farklı kademelerinde görülmektedir. İnsanlar arasındaki bu tür eşgüdüm davranışlarının günlük yaşamdamerkezi bir yeri olmasına rağmen, bu eşgüdümün davranışsal ve sinirbilimsel temelleri bilişsel nörobilim bağlamında ancak yakın zamanda ele alınmaya başlamıştır. Geleneksel nörogörüntüleme yöntemlerinden fMRI ile karşılaştırıldığında daha ekonomik ve portatif olan işlevsel yakın kızılötesitayfölçümü (fNIRS) gibi yeni nörogörüntüleme yöntemlerinin yakın zamanda geliştirilmesiyle birçok araştırmacı sosyal etkileşim sırasında gerçekleşen eşgüdümün nöral izdüşümlerini araştırmaya başlamıştır. Bu bağlamda iki kişinin beyin aktivasyonlarının aynı anda ölçülmesi olarak tanımlanan hipertarama (ing. hyperscanning) yöntemi iki-kişilik sinirbilim çalışmalarında merkezi bir yöntemolarak öne sürülmüştür. Bu çalışmalar ışığında, bu doktora tezinde iki kişinin ön beyin bölgelerindeki aktivasyonlar kişilerin beyinleri arasındaki etkileşimlerin ve davranışsal eşgüdümün ortaya çıkarılması için ortak Türkçe cümle okuma görevlerinde ölçülmüştür. Bu çalışmanın sonuçları çalışmanın işitsel (kendi, her ikisi, diğeri) ve cümle durumları (aynı, farklı) ile uyumlu yönde davranışsal eşgüdüm gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Ayrıca, beyinler arası etkileşim açısından bu çalışmanın sonuçları ön beyin korteksinde iki taraflı ve özellikle sosyal nörobilim çalışmalarında ortaya konulmuş dorsolateral prefrontal korteks, dorsomedial prefrontal korteks ve sağ-superior frontal korteks bölgelerinde uyumluluk artışı olduğunu göstermiştir. A functioning and developing human society is possible due to successful communication and joint actions between the members of the group that constitute the society at large. Synchrony among members of a society is widespread and is seen in many distinct areas such as military parades and political activities as well as in the daily lives of people such as singing together, dancing and simply taking turns during a conversation. Although such synchronous behavior between people are central to their daily lives, the behavioral and neural correlates of such behavior have only recently been studied in the context of cognitive neuroscience. With the recent advent of the new neuroimaging methods such as functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) that are both portable and cheaper compared to moretraditional methods such as fMRI, many researchers have started to investigate the neural correlates of social interactions in terms of synchronization of neural activations across the interlocutors‟ brains. In this regard, hyperscanning, which is defined as the simultaneous measurement of multiple people‟s brain activity, has emerged as a central method in social neuroscience studies. Motivated by thesedevelopments, in this study two speakers‟ brain activity at their prefrontal cortices were measured during a joint sentence reading task in Turkish in order to investigate brain-to-brain interactions in different behavioral coupling conditions. The results of this dissertation indicated that pairs showed different levels of behavioral synchrony in relation to different levels of auditory (self, both, other) and block conditions (match, mismatch). Moreover, in terms of brain-to-brain interactions the results indicated a significant coherence increase bilaterally in prefrontal cortex, especially in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, dorsomedial prefrontal cortex and right-superior frontal cortex, which are regions implicated in related social neuroscience literature. 131

Problem çözme, bir öznenin problem ile karşılaştığı zaman yaptığı aktiviteler olarak kısaca tanımlanabilir. Bu aktivitelerin altında yatan davranışsal ve bilişsel süreçler 20. yüzyılın başından bu yana önce psikologlar ve ardından bilişsel bilimciler tarafından çalışılmaktadır. Bu çalışmaların çoğu psikoloji, felsefe ve yapay zeka alanlarına yoğunlaşmıştır. Ancak, epistemoloji ve grup problem çözümleri konularında yeterli çalışmanın bilişsel bilim alanında yapılmadığı görülmektedir. Bu tezin amacı insanların problem çözme süreçlerinin arkasında yatan epistemolojik nosyonları sağlamaktır. Aynı zamanda problem çözme aktivitesi ile ilgili çeşitli kavramların epistemolojik tanımları ve formülleri de okuyucuya sunulacaktır. Bununla birlikte, bireysel ve grup olarak problem çözmeyi incelemek için düzenlenmiş deneysel ortamlar tanıtılacak ve bu deneysel ortamlarda kullanılacak bir işaretleme ve analiz sistemi tanıtılacaktır. Bu açıklama sisteminin önemi etkinlik tabanlı yaklaşımından ve problem çözme etkinliğinin altında yatan epistemolojik kavramlara olan hassasiyetinden ileri gelmektedir. Örnek çalışmada, problem çözüm süreçlerinin özünün bahsi geçen işaretleme sistemi ile çoğunlukla kapsanabileceği gösterilecektir. Problem solving can be summarized as the activities that a subject performs when confronted with a problem. The behavioral and cognitive processes underlying these activities have been first studied by psychologists and then cognitive scientists since the beginning of the 20th century. The studies mostly focused on the psychology, philosophy and AI perspectives of problem solving activity. However, epistemological and collaborrative aspects of human problem solving have not been emphasized in related cognitive science literature. This thesis aims to investigate the underlying epistemological concepts of problem solving activity of human subjects. The formulations and definitions of problem solving related terms will be explicated and some problem solving related phenomena which were discovered by the scientists will be investigated in terms of epistemology. Moreover, the experimental environments for observing the problem solving activities of individuals and groups will be introduced to the reader along with an annotation framework which was designed for these problem solving environments. The importance of the framework comes from its event-based structure and its sensitivity for the epistemological aspects of human problem solving. In the case study, it will be demonstrated that the gist of the problem solving sessions can mostly be captured by the framework. 94

Dinamik Alan Teorisi (DAT) insan bilişsel davranışını, motor ve algılayıcı uyaranlarla birlikte modellemede dinamik sistemler yaklaşımını kullanır. DAT doğası gereği somutlaştırmayı modelin içine gömülü olarak zaten içerdiğinden, bilişsel davranışı da içeren insan aktivitesini taklit eden, görev odaklı robot davranışı geliştirmede rahatlıkla kullanılabilir. Bu çalışmada pilot içeren bir uçağın seyrüsefer rotaları DAT yaklaşımı kullanarak modellenmiştir. Söz konusu model insan aklının ilgili işlevlerinin somutlaştırılmış bir modelini uçakla birlikte içerecektir. Bir uçakta durumsal farkındalık sağlamakta kullanılan algılayıcı çıktıları pilota genellikle göstergeler aracılığıyla iletilirler. İlave olarak sesli ya da dokunsal uyarıcı sistemler kullanılabilir. Bu çalışmadaki DAT modeli bu tip kokpit içi algılayıcı iletimlerini, genişletilmiş akıl tezi ile uyumlu bir şekilde etkileşim katmanları olarak içerecektir. Son olarak, modelin geliştirme ve doğrulamasına şık tutmak amacıyla, modelin üç boyutlu bir sanal ortamda engeller ve hedef durumlar arasında yaptığı seyrüseferin çıktısı olan izlerin gerçek uçuş testi sonuçları ile kıyaslanması verilecektir. The DFT modeling employs the dynamical systems approach to model the human motor and sensory stimulus unified with cognitive behavior. Since the DFT model includes the embodiment already embedded into the model, it can be easily used to generate task oriented robotic behavior similar to human activities including cognition. In this study the navigation trajectories of an aircraft with a pilot will be modeled using the DFT approach. The model will include the embodiment of the human mind into the body of the human and the aircraft. In an aircraft the sensory data required to maintain situational awareness is transferred to the pilot mostly via the displays. Additional tools may be aural and tactile systems. The DFT model in this study will include these cockpit tools as interacting layers in the DFT model following an extended mind thesis approach. Finally, in order to guide the development and verification of the trajectory equations deduced from the model within a simulated three-dimensional environment including waypoints and obstacles, real flight data records from various aircrafts will be used. 123

Bilişsel süreçler hakkındaki geleneksel teoriler, somutlaşan biliş süreçlerini, özellikle de duyu-motor becerilerin yüksek bilişsel süreçler olan akıl yürütme ve problem çözme üzerindeki etkisini göz ardı ettiği için eleştirilmektedir. Somutlaşan biliş teorileri daha alt seviye bilişsel süreçlerin ve duyu-motor yeteneklerin zihinsel süreçleri önemli ölçüde etkilediğine dair bulgular sunmaktadır. Bu tez, problem çözme gibi yüksek seviye bilişsel süreçlerle, göz hareketleri gibi duyu-motor süreçler arasındaki ilişkiyi deneysel olarak incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Tezde, katılımcıların göz hareketlerini göz izleme cihazı (Tobii Eye-Tracker) vasıtasıyla incelemek için üç adet benzer zorluktaki problem seçilmiştir. Katılımcılara bu üç problem, üç farklı koşulda verilmiş ve katılımcılardan bu problemleri ekrana bakarlarken çözmeleri istenmiştir. Bu problemler, nehir problemi, Hanoi Kulesi problemi ve Sürahi problemidir. Üç koşulda farklı problemler ardı ardına katılımcıya verilmiştir; (1) resimli görsel yardım, (2) boş ekran, (3) göz sabitleme. Her katılımcıya karışık olarak sorular verilirken, soruları çözecekleri koşullar ise aynı sırada verilmiştir. Katılımcılardan her bir sorunun çözümü için gerekli asgari hamle sayısını bulmaları istenmiştir. Göz izleme ve performans verileri Tobii Studio yazılımı ile toplanmış ve analiz edilmiştir. Deney sonuçları, iyi yapılandırılmış bulmacalar içeren görevler sırasında problem çözme performansının görsel ipucunun ya da göz hareketlerinin kısıtlanması sonucunda önemli bir ölçüde azalmadığını göstermektedir. Bu durum, duyular (görme duyusunun) ve göz hareketleri gibi vücut uzantıları ile iyi tanımlanmış görsel akıl yürütme gerektiren görevleri idame ettiren yüksek bilişsel süreçler arasındaki ilişkinin, somutlaşan biliş teorilerinin öngördüğü kadar belirleyici olmadığını göstermektedir. Ancak, özellikle resim ve boş ekran koşullarında kaydedilen göz hareketlerindeki benzerlikler, göz hareketlerinin problem çözme sürecinde dikkat kaynaklarının yönetimi için önemli bir yardım mekanizması olduğuna işaret etmektedir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Problem Çözme, Somutlaşan Biliş, Göz İzleme Traditional theories of cognition have been critiqued for underestimating the role and contributions of embodied processes, more specifically the role of sensorimotor skills, in higher-order cognitive processes such as reasoning and problem-solving. Embodied theories of cognition have started to emphasize and illustrate the prominent roles of lower-level processes and sensorimotor skills in mental processes. This thesis aims to reveal the connection between higher cognitive skills, specifically problem-solving processes and sensorimotor skills, specifically eye movements. In the thesis, three almost equally hard problems have been chosen in order to observe participants? eye-movements via eye-tracking method (Tobii Eye-Tracker). Participants have been presented three problems in three different conditions and they were asked to solve them while looking at the screen. These problems are the river problem, the Tower of Hanoi, and the Water Jug problem. The three conditions have been presented sequentially; (1) visual-aid (with a picture), (2) blank screen, (3) fixation conditions. The order of the conditions is kept the same among all of the participants, while they are asked a different problem in each condition. The participants are asked to solve the puzzles by reporting the minimum number of actions required and select the correct answer when prompted. The results of the experiment indicated that problem solving performance was not significantly impaired by the restrictions imposed on the availability of visual cues and the restrictions enforced on eye movements. This suggests that sensory modalities (vision) and their bodily extensions like eye movements may not be the strongest factor underpinning the management of higher-order cognitive functions in the context of well-defined visuospatial reasoning tasks, as predicted by the radical embodied cognition view. However, the similarities between scan paths observed during picture and blank condition suggest that eye-movements act as an important facilitation mechanism for the management of attentional resources during such problem solving processes.Keywords: Problem Solving, Embodied Cognition, Eye Tracking 66

Bu tez, görsel uzamsal problem çözme süreçlerinin prefrontal ve oküler izdüşümlerini farklı problem özelliklerine ve farklı problem alanlarına göre tasarlanmış iki boyutlu üç farklı problem türüyle anlamaya çalışmaktadır. Görsel-uzamsal problem çözme süreçleriyle ilişkili yakın zaman çalışmaları, göz izleme ve fonksiyonel near-infrared spektroskopi yöntemlerinin odaklanma paternlerinin ve işler bellek yüklerinin anlaşılmasında yararlı olduklarını öne sürmektedir. Tez çalışması kapsamında farklı görsel-uzamsal görevlerin bulunduğu bir deney protokolü yaklaşık 20 genç yetişkine uygulanmıştır. Analizler kapsamında davranışsal sonuçlar için tamamlama süresi ve doğruluk yüzdeleri hesaplanırken göz izleme sonuçları için odaklanma süresi, odaklanma sayısı ve odaklanma oranı ve fNIR sonuçları için maksimum oksijenleşme değerleri (örn. tepe nokta değerleri) hesaplanmıştır. Sonuçlar, farklı görsel-uzamsal görevler için farklı işler bellek yüklerinin ve odaklanma paternlerine sebep olduğunu göstermektedir.Anahtar kelimeler: görsel-uzamsal problem çözme, göz izleme, fnir, prefrontal korteks Current thesis analyzes the neural and ocular correlates of visuospatial problem solving processes by investigating three different two-dimensional problems which are constructed with regard to different problem features and problem spaces. Recent studies focused on visuospatial problem solving processes suggest that eye tracking and functional near-infrared spectroscopy methodologies can provide better understanding of fixation patterns and working memory demands respectively. Experimental protocol including various visuospatial problem tasks was applied to approximately 20 young adults. While completion times and accuracy percentage were calculated for behavioral results, fixation duration, the number of fixation and fixation rate were calculated for eye-tracking results and maximum oxygenation values (i.e. peak values) were calculated for fNIR results. During problem solvers engaged in visuospatial tasks, behaviors which were categorized as distance, similarity and orientation were observed from scan path analysis. Olasılıksal öğrenme bir uyaran ve sonucu arasındaki ilişkiyi sunulan geri bildirimler doğrultusunda anlamaya dayanan bir yetidir. Katılımcılar deneyi ipucu ve sonuç ilişkisine dayalı olarak, deney süresince bu ilişkiyi öğrenmeye çalışırlar. Öğrenme en üst seviyedeyken, insanlar çalışma belleklerini kullanırlar. Bu çalışmada 20 katılımcı bir olasılıksal öğrenme deneyine katılmışlardır, ve prefrontal corteks aktiviteleri fonksiyonel Yakın Kızılötesi Spektroskopi (fNIRS) kullanarak ölçülmüştür. Katılımcıların deney süresince verilen geri bildirimler yardımıyla olasılıkları anlayacakları ve çalışma belleklerini daha az kullanacakları öne sürülmüştür. Sonuç olarak öğrenme ilerledikçe fNIRS sinyallerinde düşme beklenmiştir. Sonuçlar beklenen yönde bulunmuştur: Dorsolateral prefrontal korteks aktivitesi ve öğrenme arasında anlamlı negatif korelasyon bulunmuştur. Fakat, bu öne sürülen farklılık bulunamamıştır. Sonuç olarak, bu tezde çalışma belleği ve olasılıksal öğrenme ilişkisi, dorsolateral prefrontal korteksden ölçülerek gözlemlenmiştir. Probability learning is the ability to establish a relationship between stimulus and outcomes based on occurrence probabilities using repetitive feedbacks. Participants learn the task according to the cue-outcome relationship, and try to gain in depth understanding of this relationship throughout the experiment. While learning is at the highest level, people rely on their working memory. In this study 20 participants were presented a probability learning task, and their prefrontal cortex activity was measured with functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. It was hypothesized that as participants gain more knowledge of the probabilities they will learn cue-outcome relationships and therefore rely less on their working memory. Therefore as learning precedes a drop in the fNIRS signal is expected. We obtained results confirming our hypothesis: Significant negative correlation between dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity and learning was found. Similarly, response time also decreased through the task, indicating that as learning precedes participants made decisions faster. Participants used either the frequency matching or the maximization strategy in order to solve the task in which they had to decide whether the blue or the red color was winning. When they use the frequency matching strategy they chose blue at the rate of winning for the blue choice. When they use the maximization strategy they chosed blue almost always. Our task was designed such that the frequency for blue to win was 80%. We had hypothesized that the people in frequency matching and maximization groups would show working memory differences which could be observed from the fNIRS signal. However, we were unable to detect this type of behavioral difference in the fNIRS signal. Overall, our study showed the relationship between probability learning and working memory as depicted by brain activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex which widely known as the central executive component of working memory. 83

Deneyimli ve başlangıç seviyesi simülatör pilotları, PC temelli uçuş simülasyonunda gerçek uçuş (veya tam uçuş simulatörü) şartlarına benzer durumlara maruz kalırlar. Bu tezde, simüle uçuş görev ortamında deneyim, çalışma belleği, baskılama ve bölünmüş dikkat kapasitesinin durumsal farkındalık (DF) üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Durumsal farkındalık kavramının bilişsel temelleri, yukarıda belirtilen yeteneklerin birleşik etkileri analiz edilerek araştırılmıştır. Uçuş simülasyonu görevi ile elde edilen çevrimiçi ve çevrimdışı DF ölçümleri; deneyim için toplam uçuş saati bilgisi, çalışma belleği için Otomatize İşlem Erim Görevi, baskılama için Stroop ve bölünmüş dikkat kapasitesi için Coşkunöz Görsel Dikkat testi ölçümleri kullanılmıştır. Regresyon analizleri sonucunda deneyim ve baskılama kapasitesinin durumsal farkındalık ile beklenen ilişkileri görülmüştür. Diğer yandan, durumsal farkıdalığın çalışma belleği ve bölünmüş dikkat kapasitesiyle beklenen ilişkileri gözlemlenememiştir. Bu durum muhtemelen simülatör pilotlarının kişisel uygulamalarındaki sistematik olmayan farklılıklardan kaynaklanmaktadır.Ana deneylere ek olarak, simülatör pilotlarının dorsolateral prefrontal korteksteki sinirsel aktivite davranışsal performanslar süresince ölçülmüştür. Simule uçuş, görevinin oluşturduğu bilişsel işyükünün sinirsel bağlantıları fonksiyonel Yakın Kızılötesi (fNIR) Spektroskopi optik beyin görüntüleme tekniği ile incelenmiştir. Experienced and novice simulator pilots are subject to some of the constraints of a real flight (or a full flight simulator) situation in a PC based flight simulation. In this thesis, the effects of expertise, working memory capacity, inhibition and divided attention on situation awareness (SA) in simulated flight task environments are investigated. The cognitive aspects underlying the process of situation awareness are explored by analyzing the compound effects of above listed factors. Online and Offline SA measurements obtained from a simulated flight task are used with flight hours standing for expertise and scores of Automated Operation Span Task, Stroop and Coşkunöz visual attention tasks as measurements for working memory capacity, inhibition and divided attention respectively. Regression analyses reveal that expected relationships of simulator pilots? SA with expertise and inhibition capacity are supported. On the other hand, expected relationships of SA with working memory and divided attention capacities are not revealed. This situation probably results from unsystematic differences in simulator pilots? practices.In addition to the main experiment, simulator pilots? levels of neural activity at their dorsolateral prefrontal cortex are also measured during their behavioral performance. The relationships among neural correlates of mental workload induced by the simulated flight are investigated by the functional near-infrared (fNIR) spectroscopy optical brain imaging technology. Theorized mental workload distinction in the scenario of the simulated flight task is successfully observed in both perceived workload declarations and oxygenation measurements by fNIR. 129
