Adolescence is a vulnerable period for the development of eating disorders, but there are disparities in eating disorder risk among adolescents. One population that may be at increased risk but is vastly understudied, is adolescents residing in rural regions within the United States. Rural communities face many mental and physical health disparities; however, the literature on rural adolescent eating disorder risk is nearly nonexistent. In this paper we summarize the scant literature on disordered eating and eating disorder risk and prevalence among rural US adolescents. We also detail eating disorder risk factors that may have unique influence in this population, including socioeconomic status, food insecurity, healthcare access, body image, and weight stigma. Given the presence of numerous eating disorder risk factors, we speculate that rural adolescents may be a particularly vulnerable population for eating disorders and we propose critical next steps in research for understanding eating disorder risk among the understudied population of rural adolescents. Public Significance: Rural adolescents may be at increased risk for eating disorders due to disproportionate burden of known risk factors, though this relationship remains understudied. We present a summary of the literature on prevalence and unique risk factors, proposing that this may be a high‐risk population. We detail next steps for research to understand eating disorder risk in this population to inform future prevention, identification, and treatment efforts needed in this community. This paper examines the impact and consequences on college students in the United States whose names are Americanized (‘Americanization’ is used throughout this paper to apply only to residents of the United States and has two possible meanings: within the US, it refers to acculturation of immigrants, whereas internationally it refers to the influence of the US on other countries. Our paper uses ‘Americanization’ as a description of acculturation. The process of ‘Westernization’ might be applicable to citizens outside of the United States.) because they are deemed foreign, difficult, and inferior. Our research also examines the difficulties that educators often have with the correct pronunciation of names. Through an exercise designed to teach and learn the correct pronunciation of names, we examine the responses of college students who describe their experiences with teachers and peers with the incorrect pronunciation of their family names and the renaming that occurred. Violent radicalization is a complex process that results from multiple influences and experiences across the settings and contexts of an individual's life. No single pathway or characteristic determines who is at risk for it. Given this understanding, no single intervention aimed at this multiply-determined problem is likely to be successful if it is implemented in isolation. Multidisciplinary team approaches are increasingly seen as holding promise in the prevention and intervention of violent radicalization in the United States and internationally. A multidisciplinary team is typically a group of professionals who are members of different fields of study (psychology, medicine, social work, etc.) who provide a specific service to an individual. Team members independently focus on the issues in which they specialize and activities of the team are coordinated with a common goal. This paper aims to extend current knowledge by addressing questions related to challenges in implementing a multidisciplinary team approach with the capacity to address violent radicalization, presenting potential solutions to these challenges as well as highlighting one multidisciplinary team, Community Connect, that successfully worked with youth identified as being at risk for violence. Confirming early fears of accelerated drug overdose deaths in 2020, over 93,000 Americans died last year of a drug overdose—the greatest overdose-involved loss of life in a single year. National survey results reveal that 40% of people with a substance use disorder who do not receive treatment report that they are 'not ready to stop using' and 42% do not receive treatment due to stigma, underscoring the need for greater adoption of harm reduction strategies. In the face of surging drug overdose deaths, American policymakers and treatment professionals continue to stand by the same approaches while expecting different results. Evidence-based, life-saving interventions include medications for opioid use disorder, low-threshold bridge clinics in emergency crisis settings, co-prescription and community distribution of naloxone anti-overdose kits, drug checking services (fentanyl test strips), syringe services programs, and overdose prevention sites. Despite strong research support and national lip-service to 'evidence-based' and 'patient-centered' approaches, harm reduction remains highly underutilized and widely unaccepted by the treatment community. Fortunately, the American government has taken several steps in recent months in terms of increased funding and the elimination of many strict, often arbitrary federal regulations, signaling the beginning of a potential shift in federal drug policy. This paper reviews available evidence with an eye toward the current state of affairs and offers actionable steps for researchers, treatment administrators, clinicians, and policymakers to make the case for greater adoption of harm reduction to address the drug overdose crisis. Suicide, and its particularly disturbing rise in the last three decades, is a major public health concern. Prevention efforts must be multifaceted, and include the refinement of epidemiological methods in the study of suicide; development of health education, information, and intervention programs dealing with suicide; and increased community awareness of and participation in all suicide prevention efforts. Despite global shifts toward prevention of school corporal punishment, the practice remains widespread. This systematic review focused on (a) prevalence, (b) associated mental health and behavioral factors, and (c) correlates that may be risk or protective factors. Studies included in this review were peer-reviewed, published in English between 1980 and July 2017, and quantitative in design. Fifty-three papers met the inclusion criteria. All were cross-sectional surveys, predominantly of moderate quality and conducted in the United States (US) and on the African continent. Results indicated that school corporal punishment is prevalent across the globe (including where bans are in place) and does not appear to be decreasing over time, although measurement differences preclude firm conclusions. It is associated with physical, academic, mental health, and behavioral problems for children. Boys, Black students (in the US), and students exposed to violence at home were most at risk of corporal punishment. It is unclear whether disability puts a student at risk. Schools with high rates of other disciplinary practices were more likely to use corporal punishment, while those who employed a mental health professional and trained staff in safety procedures were less likely to use corporal punishment. Teacher attitudes favoring corporal punishment, and their use of violence in other contexts, increased risk. Low socioeconomic status (of the student or the school environment) increased risk, while high levels of state social capital reduced risk. Future research must include areas where corporal punishment is banned and focus on developing effective interventions to prevent school corporal punishment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we address the question of lethal school violence and suggest some preventive strategies. Previous studies in the field have been dominated of cases from the U.S. or Germany, but in this paper we instead focus on lethal violence which has occurred in Scandinavia. Previous research of lethal violence and prevention against it often stresses the complexity and limitations in research. Mainly since the impossibility to profile perpetrators or make lists of warnings signs. In addition, since lethal violence are rare events, there are methodologic challenges related to studies of the phenomena. In the study, the included cases are different acts of lethal violence, occurred 1961–2016 (n = 12). In the first analysis, the aim is to construct a typology, and in the second analysis the typology is used for analysing suitable prevention strategies. The study emphasizes the relation between perpetrator, victim, school and traceable motive in the typology, and the result concludes three different types of lethal violence. The first is based on interpersonal revenge, the second institutional revenge and the third societal revenge. Two prevention strategies seem suitable: one aiming at schools organizational structure and the second to architectural decisions in the design process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a case study that illustrates how professional associations can provide the context for development of formal and informal interdisciplinary collaboration and promote advancement and dissemination of useful knowledge among disciplines and across geographic boundaries. This paper reports the work of the Rural Aging Special Interest Group of the Gerontological Society of America to develop and disseminate approaches that leverage existing resources to address the challenges of providing services to rural – dwelling older adults. It describes the challenges and the roles of networks in developing and supporting these partnerships to better meet the challenges.Design/methodology/approach This paper describes how interdisciplinary partnerships can enhance existing resources to better meet the unique needs of rural older adults and describes an example of how a professional association facilitated the process of creation and dissemination of knowledge about this approach. An overview of the process is provided with additional information relating partnerships to improving programs and services for rural older adults.Findings While addressing the unique needs of rural older adults can sometimes prove challenging, a number of entities have developed successful interdisciplinary partnerships that have expanded resources and improved effectiveness in addressing these challenges.Originality/value This paper illustrates how a professional association can play a key role in supporting creative interdisciplinary and international problem solving. The author reflects on the potential use of tissue sealants in stopping obstetric hemorrhage, a complication in normal vaginal delivery. The author suggests that obstetricians must eliminate coagulopathies before regarding the use of tissue sealant for obstetric hemorrhage treatment. It discusses several tissue sealants marketed in the U.S. including fibrin sealants. She notes that tissue sealants are only additional tools in controlling obstetric hemorrhage and not an ultimate solution.

Aims and objectives: To understand Black women's perspectives on a pre‐exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) education intervention in a salon setting. Background: Black women have a significant lifetime risk of acquiring HIV. Pre‐exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective prevention approach in reducing that risk. Despite this, Black women are least likely to use PrEP. Design: This was a qualitative study to identify Black women's perspectives on acceptability of a PrEP education intervention in a salon setting using hair stylists. The paper adhered to the COREQ checklist in reporting. Methods: Seven focus groups among Black women (n = 44) living in north‐central North Carolina were conducted. Ethical approval was obtained. The interview guide included questions on knowledge of PrEP and barriers and facilitators to a PrEP promotion programme in a salon setting. Results: Conventional content analysis considered content in relation to themes of facilitators, barriers and women's preferences for intervention delivery. Facilitators included the salon characteristics, social culture and relationship with the stylist. Women noted concerns of accuracy of content from stylists and privacy as barriers. Conclusions: Participants' trust with their stylists make a PrEP education salon‐based intervention feasible. Salon‐based interventions are not one‐size‐fits‐all and researchers interested in this setting should tailor interventions to the individual salon. Interventions for PrEP in a salon setting should be culturally appropriate, confidential and consider the potential reach to the social networks of Black women in the salon. Relevance to clinical practice: The insights shared by Black women can contribute to developing a PrEP uptake intervention as a way of reducing new cases of HIV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous papers discussing the effectiveness of injurious wildlife listings under 18 U.S.C. 42(a) of the Lacey Act have emphasized failures while ignoring the many successes. We looked at the 120-year history of injurious listing and then determined the effectiveness of the listings since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) gained the listing authority in 1940. We measured success by the effectiveness of listing relative to the stage of the invasion process - that is, whether or not a species was established at the time of listing, if it since established, and if it subsequently spread to other States. The USFWS started listing preemptively with its first rule in 1952 and has added the majority of species preemptively since then. We analyzed the 307 species that were listed for invasiveness (excluding species listed for other injurious reasons). Of those species, 288 (94%) were listed preemptively (before they became established). Although we acknowledge that other factors may play a role, we consider species that were listed before establishment and remained not established as "very effective" listings. All 288 remained not established - a 100% prevention rate when listed preemptively. Only 19 of the 307 species (6%) were listed after establishment, and they remain established. The listings are considered "effective" for the 4% that remained within the State(s) they were established in at listing and "ineffective" or "not applicable" for the 2% that spread to other States. The rationale for listing established species is explained herein. We conclude that injurious species listings can be effective at any stage, but prohibiting the importation into the United States of high-risk species prior to their introduction and establishment into U.S. environments is very effective in preventing invasions, and this success has heretofore been overlooked. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the three articles included in a special focus of Drugs: Education, Prevention, and Policy that address environmental change strategies targeting drug abuse prevention. We define environmental change strategies and their effectiveness in public health domains such as alcohol abuse, smoking, and obesity. We then discuss the three articles, each of which addresses different aspects of how environmental change strategies might be best implemented and measured. The first paper by Agley et al. (2014) examines the challenges of implementing an evidence-based practice, specifically screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment to address drug abuse in primary care settings. The second paper by Kreiner et al. looks at encouraging providers to implement safe prescribing practices for controlled substances and to translate work being done in the medical community to the prevention specialist domain. The third paper by Quinlan et al. conducts a review of the literature on environmental change strategies targeting nonmedical use of marijuana and provides results showing the most and least effective of these interventions. This special focus is intended to build the evidence base for effective environmental change strategies to prevent drug abuse, generate critical analyses, and spur future research that will help improve the implementation and evaluation of such interventions. This paper explores the issue of identifying prescription opioid abuse in the healthcare setting and potential strategies to address this nationwide problem. In particular, this article examines existing literature focusing on opioid abuse and possible prevention methods to address this epidemic in the U.S. Using literature reviews accompanied by interviews from healthcare professionals who shared their experiences about the problems they face in their practices, this study found that the complexity of opioid abuse requires a more universal approach and some form of intervention from the outside. One inspiration for a solution comes from the Mandatory Reporting of abuse for children implemented by many professionals in California. This paper suggests a variation of the Mandatory Reporting, adapted for opioid abuse that involves education and public involvement, harsher consequences for professionals for failure to report opioid abuse, as well as involvement from the federal government in the form of legislation. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), one of the deadliest parasitic diseases in the world, causes more than 50,000 human deaths each year and afflicts millions of people throughout South America, East Africa, South Asia, and Mediterranean Region. In 2015 the World Health Organization classified VL as a neglected tropical disease (NTD), prompting concentrated study of the VL epidemic using mathematical and simulation models. This paper reviews literature related to prevalence and prevention control strategies. More than thirty current research works were reviewed and classified based on VL epidemic study methods, including modeling approaches, control strategies, and simulation techniques since 2013. A summarization of these technical methods, major findings, and contributions from existing works revealed that VL epidemic research efforts must improve in the areas of validating and verifying VL mathematical models with real-world epidemic data. In addition, more dynamic disease control strategies must be explored and advanced simulation techniques must be used to predict VL pandemics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous studies find that criminal court judges issue racially disparate sentences, but whether these patterns reflect tastes for discrimination remains unclear. An alternative explanation is statistical discrimination, which implies that judges rely on race to predict a felon's latent criminality in the absence of perfect information. This paper uses an empirical approach that distinguishes between taste-based and statistical discrimination. The intuition is that if the rank order of judicial incarceration rates depends on race, then this is symptomatic of taste-based discrimination. The rank-order test results imply that we cannot reject the null hypothesis of no taste-based discrimination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2016, the US Preventive Services Task Force concluded that there was "insufficient" ("I" statement) evidence to support universal primary care screening for autism spectrum disorder. The statement led to controversy among research and clinical communities. Although a number of papers have since been published arguing for the potential benefit of autism spectrum disorder screening, none adequately address the potential harms of autism spectrum disorder screening. This evidence gap may relate to confusion regarding how the US Preventive Services Task Force conceptualizes and evaluates potential harm. In this commentary, we explore how the US Preventive Services Task Force operationalizes harm and discuss how the potential for harm was described in the "I" statement on autism spectrum disorder screening. This information can serve as a guide for investigators working to study the benefits and harms of autism spectrum disorder screening in order to fill the research gaps cited by the US Preventive Services Task Force report. Finally, we recommend future research directions for exploring harms of autism spectrum disorder screening, filling cited research gaps, and ultimately ensuring that the benefits of autism spectrum disorder screening truly outweigh the harms for all children and their families. Objectives: Infant mortality remains a significant public health problem in the U.S. The Collaborative Improvement & Innovation Network (CoIIN) model is an innovative approach, using the science of quality improvement and collaborative learning, which was applied across 13 Southern states in Public Health Regions IV and VI to reduce infant mortality and improve birth outcomes. We provide an in-depth discussion of the history, development, implementation, and adaptation of the model based on the experience of the original CoIIN organizers and participants. In addition to the political genesis and functional components of the initiative, 8 key lessons related to staffing, planning, and implementing future CoIINs are described in detail. Methods: This paper reports the findings from a process evaluation of the model. Data on the states' progress toward reducing infant mortality and improving birth outcomes were collected through a survey in the final months of a 24-month implementation period, as well as through ongoing team communications. Results: The peer-to-peer exchange and platform for collaborative learning, as well as the sharing of data across the states, were major strengths and form the foundation for future CoIIN efforts. A lasting legacy of the initiative is the unique application and sharing of provisional 'real time' data to inform 'real time' decision-making. Conclusion: The CoIIN model of collaborative learning, QI, and innovation offers a promising approach to strengthening partnerships within and across states, bolstering data systems to inform and track progress more rapidly, and ultimately accelerating improvement toward healthier communities, States, and the Nation as a whole. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is becoming one of the dominant approaches for bringing evidence- and consensus-based cancer prevention and control practices to medically underserved communities. There are many examples of how CBPR has been useful for generating culturally specific solutions for different health issues that affect African-Americans. However, few examples exist in the literature on how the CBPR approach can be applied to address prostate cancer. This paper describes a collaborative process for linking inner-city, African-American men to free prostate cancer education, physician counseling, and screening opportunities (prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing and digital rectal examination (DRE)). The site of this community-based participatory project was the city of Buffalo, located in Erie County, New York. The collaborative, community-academic process that is described includes the following: (1) planning and conducting a community needs assessment to contextualize local prostate cancer issues, (2) organizing town and gown event planning, and (3) manipulating aspects of the built environment to build an infrastructure within the community to address disparities in screening opportunities. Personalized prevention uses family history and predictive genetic testing to identify people at high risk of serious diseases. The availability of predictive genetic tests is a newer and still-developing phenomenon. Many observers see tremendous potential for personalized prevention to improve public health. At the same time, the emergence of these new markets raises familiar health policy concerns about costs, cost-effectiveness, and health disparities. This paper first discusses an economic framework for the analysis of personalized prevention. On the demand side, consumers use personalized prevention as a form of information that allows them to make better choices about prevention, including medical care and health behaviors like diet and exercise. On the supply side, an interplay of complex market forces and regulations will determine the prices, advertising, and insurance coverage of predictive genetic tests. Beyond the question of whether health insurance will cover the costs of predictive genetic tests, there is a great deal of concern about whether consumers' use of genetic tests might place them at risk of genetic discrimination or might lead to adverse selection. The paper also reports descriptive analysis of data from the 2000, 2005, and 2010 National Health Interview Surveys on the use of predictive genetic tests. The empirical analysis documents large socioeconomic status-related disparities in consumers having heard of genetic tests: for example, consumers with less schooling, Blacks, and Hispanics were substantially less likely to have heard of genetic tests. Evidence from other empirical studies provides little evidence that genetic testing leads to genetic discrimination in insurance markets. There is more evidence suggesting adverse selection, where genetic testing leads consumers to purchase long-term care insurance. The paper concludes with some preliminary thoughts about important directions for future research. The goal of the paper is to review relevant research to help develop an economic approach and social science research agenda into the determinants and consequences of genetic tests for prevention. Despite significant progress in research on the treatment and prevention of psychological, behavioral, and health problems, the translation of this knowledge into population-wide benefit remains limited. This paper reviews the state of America's children and families, highlighting the influence of stressful contextual and social conditions on child and family well-being and the concentration of disadvantage in numerous neighborhoods and communities throughout the nation. It then briefly reviews the progress that has been made in pinpointing policies that can reduce stressful contextual conditions such as poverty, discrimination, and the marketing of unhealthful foods and substances. It also describes numerous family and school interventions that have proven benefit in preventing psychological and behavioral problems as diverse as tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use; depression; antisocial behavior; academic failure; obesity prevention; and early childbearing. We argue that progress in translating existing knowledge into widespread benefit will require a nationwide effort to intervene comprehensively in neighborhoods and communities of concentrated disadvantage. We present a strategic plan for how such an effort could be organized. The first step in this organizing would be the creation of a broad and diverse coalition of organizations concerned with advancing public health and well-being. Such a coalition could increase public support both for the policies needed to focus on these disadvantaged areas and the research needed to incrementally improve our ability to help these areas. Background and aims: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a preventable condition that imposes a significant financial burden on societies. Funding of FASD prevention is a small portion of the total expenditures associated with FASD. This paper aimed to review the literature on the costs of and savings from prevention of FASD and present a model for the United States and Canada of projected savings based on expansion of existing evidence‐based prevention models. Methods: A systematic review of published literature on the cost of FASD prevention was conducted and experts in the field were interviewed. Studies that reported the cost of primary prevention of FASD were eligible for further consideration. Results: Applying evidenced‐based prevention programs to women at highest risk to have a future child with FASD greatly reduces the cost of prevention. In the United States, one case of FASD can be prevented for as little as USD $20 200 – 47 615. Cost of prevention is considerably less expensive than cost of care for a case of FASD. Conclusion: Expansion of risk‐based prevention strategies for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in the United States and Canada would be an economically efficient and worthwhile investment for society. Indigenous communities often face disproportionate challenges across a variety of health domains, and effective prevention strategies are sorely needed. Unfortunately, evidence is scant regarding what approaches are effective for these communities. A common approach is to take an evidence-based practice or program with documented effectiveness in other populations and implement it with Indigenous populations. While a science of intervention adaptation is emerging, there remains little guidance on processes for adaptation that strategically leverage both existing scientific evidence and Indigenous prevention strategies. In this paper, two case studies illustrate promising practices for adaptation, documenting the approaches of two research teams funded under the National Institutes of Health's initiative to support Intervention Research to Improve Native American Health (IRINAH). These teams worked with distinct Indigenous populations in the USA and Canada to culturally adapt the same prevention program, the Iowa Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14. The approaches of these two teams and the programs that resulted are compared and contrasted, and critical elements of adaptation in partnership with Indigenous communities are discussed. Initiation of substance use often occurs earlier among American Indian (AI) youth than among other youth in the USA, bringing increased risk for a variety of poor health and developmental outcomes. Effective prevention strategies are needed, but the evidence base remains thin for this population. Research makes clear that prevention strategies need to be culturally coherent; programs with an evidence base in one population cannot be assumed to be effective in another. However, guidance on effective adaptation is lacking. This paper reports on cultural adaptation of an evidence-based program utilizing the multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) framework embedded within a community-engaged process to evaluate intervention components. The Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14 was adapted to become the Thiwáhe Gluwáš'akapi Program for American Indian youth and families. Three program components were evaluated for their effectiveness with regard to outcomes (youth substance use, theoretical mediators of program effects on substance use, and program attendance) in a sample of 98 families (122 youth and 137 adults). Consistent with the MOST framework, the value of components was also evaluated with regard to efficiency, economy, and scalability. Expanding on the MOST framework for cultural adaptation, we also considered the results of the MOST findings regarding the acceptability of each component from the perspectives of community members and participants. The promise of a strategic component-based approach to adapting evidence-based interventions is discussed, including the benefits of engaging community to ensure relevance and considering both cultural and scientific rationale for each component to enhance impact. Purpose ? Reforms set forth in Sarbanes-Oxley and the NYSE, AMEX, and NASD are designed to prevent the reoccurrence of corporate collapses at companies such as Enron Corp., WorldCom Inc., and Global Crossing Ltd. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the possible impact the reforms may or may not have had in controlling the abuses uncovered in recent corporate failures.Design/methodology/approach ? This paper examines the reforms to corporate governance and the rationale behind the reforms, and examines how the actual governance structures of Enron, WorldCom, and Global Crossing during the years of their accounting scandals compared to the new requirements. It also offers a discussion as to whether the new reforms would have been helpful in preventing management's manipulation of earnings.Findings ? Global Crossing's governance structure would have satisfied a majority of the reforms. Enron's and WorldCom's governance structures would have satisfied less than half of the reforms.Practical implications ? This paper highlights the need for management and shareholders alike to focus on the substance of the reforms and not merely the form of the reforms in order to make meaningful improvements to corporate governance.Originality/value ? Increasing evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship exists between levels of health literacy (HL) and cognitive impairment in later life. However, it is unclear whether low levels of HL can lead to a higher risk of dementia. This systematic review explored prospective cohort studies to find out whether HL is a risk factor for incident dementia in older adults. A search was conducted in Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, PubMed and Scopus and 5450 documents were initially retrieved. The grey literature and references of the selected papers were also consulted. Papers were selected and assessed by three researchers independently. Findings were reported in line with the PRISMA guidelines and quality appraisal was conducted using the STROBE checklist. Four studies were included for quality appraisal, data extraction and synthesis, all of which were conducted in the United States between 2014 and 2018. Adjusted analyses showed that in all studies people with low levels of HL had a significantly higher risk of incident dementia over time than people with adequate levels of HL. Low HL or total literacy (financial plus HL) was also a risk factor for mild cognitive impairment in two studies, irrespective of an Alzheimer's disease genotype. There was a statistically significant positive association between total literacy scores and the post-mortem amount of plaques and tangles suggestive of Alzheimer's disease. Our findings suggest that low levels of HL might lead to higher future dementia risk. However, as only a few longitudinal studies have been conducted in this area, further research is needed to establish the role of HL as a key risk factor for dementia. Researchers should use standardized HL-specific measurement tools so that future studies in this area are robust and comparable. Interventions aiming to improve access to and retention in HIV care are optimized when they are tailored to clients' needs. This paper describes an initiative of interventions implemented by ten demonstration sites using a transnational framework to tailor services for Mexicans and Puerto Ricans living with HIV. Transnationalism describes how immigrants (and their children) exist in their "receiving" place (e.g., continental U.S.) while simultaneously maintaining connections to their country or place of origin (e.g., Mexico). We describe interventions in terms of the strategies used, the theory informing design and the tailoring, and the integration of transnationalism. We argue how applying the transnational framework may improve the quality and effectiveness of services in response to the initiative's overall goal, which is to produce innovative, robust, evidence-informed strategies that go beyond traditional tailoring approaches for HIV interventions with Latino/as populations. Heart failure is one of the leading causes of hospitalizations in the United States, with >1 million admissions yearly and a 25% risk of readmissions within 1 month. In order to assist clinicians, we provide an update of the heart failure bibliography that was published in Pharmacotherapy in 2008, which followed the original bibliography published in 2004. A significant number of clinical trials and observational studies have been conducted since the early 1980s to guide management of heart failure patients. Major advances have occurred in the past 10 years, and our understanding of the diagnosis, prevention, and management of heart failure has evolved substantially during this time period. Specific areas of this review include heart failure risk factors, management of comorbid conditions, acute heart failure management, chronic heart failure management, advanced heart failure, device therapy, lifestyle modification, and medication and therapy management, including medication adherence. Key consensus guidelines and statements are also included. This bibliography of key heart failure papers aims to provide clinicians and their trainees with a valuable clinical reference resource and teaching tool that may be used to optimize the care of patients with heart failure. This paper places America's "war on drugs" in perspective in order to develop a new metaphor for control of drug misuse. A brief and focused history of America's experience with substance use and substance use policy over the past several hundred years provides background and a framework to compare the current Pharmacological Revolution with America's Nineteenth Century Industrial Revolution. This paper tests competing theoretical explanations for the passage of corporate charter antitakeover amendments. The managerial entrenchment hypothesis suggests that antitakeover amendments are adopted by incumbent management to obtain job security at stockholders' expense. An alternative hypothesis is that antitakeover amendments are proposed in order to enable the management of the target firm to extract a higher price from the bidding firm and thereby benefit stockholders. Our event study from a sample of 409 firms that adopted antitakeover amendments in the 1974--88 period indicates a strongly negative effect on stockholder wealth, in support of the managerial entrenchment hypothesis that antitakeover amendments are adopted by managers at the expense of stockholders. Non-typhoidal Salmonella is the most common bacterial cause of foodborne illness in the United States, causing roughly 1.2 million cases annually. Salmonella is commonly associated with raw meat and poultry products, and despite progress in exceeding USDA FSIS performance standards, the rates of salmonellosis in the U.S. are well above public health goals. Reducing the frequency of exposure to levels of Salmonella that cause illness is critical to protect public health. This paper reviews the USDA FSIS policies currently used to assess Salmonella and explores alternative international models focused on enumeration that are being implemented for the control of Campylobacter. The paper outlines how a strategy that considers enumeration of Salmonella may protect public health, including a review of the uncertainties and variability with regard to infectious dose and proposes that meaningful gains in public health will be achieved by reducing the levels of Salmonella in raw ground meat and poultry. Many employers enact hidden agendas that include discriminating against workers over the age of 40. Fairness and respect are key behaviors for preventing age discrimination with a particular emphasis on "information". Thus, the focus of the paper includes providing information related to the identification and discussion of age discrimination as well as strategies to impede the progression of age discrimination. Additionally, the authors present a model to support the idea that a holistic approach to addressing age discrimination is needed in order to create a culture that focuses on protecting intellectual capital, reducing legal issues, and promoting a productive work environment. This paper surveys the role of the Federal Reserve within the financial regulatory system, with particular attention to the interaction of the Fed's role as both a supervisor and a lender-of-last-resort. The institutional design of the Federal Reserve System was aimed at preventing banking panics, primarily due to the permanent presence of the discount window. This new system was successful at preventing a panic in the early 1920s, after which the Fed began to discourage the use of the discount window and intentionally create 'stigma' for window borrowing-policies that contributed to the panics of the Great Depression. The legislation of the New Deal era centralized Fed power in the Board of Governors, and over the next 75 years the Fed expanded its role as a supervisor of the largest banks. Nevertheless, prior to the recent crisis the Fed had large gaps in its authority as a supervisor and as lender of last resort, with the latter role weakened further by stigma. The Fed was unable to prevent the recent crisis, during which its lender of last resort function expanded significantly. This paper presents a population health framework for homelessness prevention. Rooted in the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative, the framework includes strategies that affect social determinants of health that influence a broad range of health outcomes prevalent among the homeless. For each prevention level, we consider the purpose of prevention, the sub-population of interest, and evidence of the effectiveness of interventions in addressing factors that affect health and health outcomes. Our review highlights the importance of cross-cutting strategies and the limits of our knowledge about more targeted preventive interventions. We note that a prevention orientation requires attention to the social and physical environments that affect homelessness plus connections between the homelessness services sector and mainstream systems of care and support. Over the last two decades, opioid-related mortality rates have increased dramatically to become a serious public health concern in the United States. Opioid-related mortality has reached epidemic levels in certain rural areas of the U.S., such as Appalachia, New England, and the Mountain West, while remaining relatively low in others, such as the Delta South and Great Plains. Explanations for geographic variation in opioid mortality are unclear, contributing to ineffective policies and interventions. The goal of this article is to summarize the existing literature on the opioid epidemic in the rural U.S. to help guide intervention efforts. This paper 1) describes geographic heterogeneity in opioid-related mortality, with a focus on rural areas, 2) summarizes factors that likely contribute to this heterogeneity, and 3) discusses potential strategies for addressing the opioid epidemic in the hardest-hit rural communities. The information presented in this paper dispels the myth that the opioid epidemic is disproportionately rural, and demonstrates that the magnitude of the epidemic has varied considerably across different rural areas. This paper provides important insights for public health professionals, treatment practitioners, researchers, and policymakers as they work toward solutions that take into account the diversity of rural communities and the dynamic nature of the opioid epidemic. Suboptimal maternal nutrition and excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) establish in mothers and their offspring a weight gain trajectory towards overweight and obesity. Therefore, pregnancy may be the best opportunity to disrupt the generational cycle of obesity. More than half of women in the UK now enter pregnancy overweight or obese, highlighting that if interventions are not targeted towards women in higher weight categories before conception they are likely to 'miss the mark'. To address issues of suboptimal maternal nutrition and excessive GWG in antenatal care, health professionals need to consider how women's requirements and expectations may have changed in recent years and the impact of weight stigma on the care of women who are obese. This paper aims to drive changes in clinical practice guidelines, medical curricula, the language used by health professionals, and ultimately promote maternal nutrition and weight management in pregnancy as key priorities during antenatal care. Evidence indicates that women want non-judgemental, simple and encouraging guidance in these areas. Small changes to health professionals' practice can improve how advice regarding nutrition and weight management in pregnancy is delivered, and has the potential to reduce overweight and obesity prevalence in women and their children in the years to come.
