Human sensory receptors enable the real world to be perceived effortlessly. Hence, massive efforts have been devoted to the development of bionic receptors capable of identifying objects. Unfortunately, most of the existing devices are limited to single sensory emulation and are established on solid-state electronic technologies, which are incompatible with the biological reactions occurring in electrolyte media. Here, an iontronic tactile-gustatory receptor using an all-polymer electrochemical transistor (AECT) is presented. The sensor is biocompatible with the operation voltage of 0.1 V, which is 1 to 2 orders lower than those of reported values. By this study, one receptor is able to accurately recognize various objects perceived by the human tactile and gustatory system without complex circuitry. Additionally, to promote its further application, flexible AECT arrays with channel length of 2 µm and density of 104 167 transistors cm -2 (yield of 97%) are fabricated, 1 to 5 orders higher than those of related works. Polymer semiconductors are promising candidates for wearable and skin-like X-ray detectors due to their scalable manufacturing, adjustable molecular structures and intrinsic flexibility. Herein, we fabricated an intrinsically stretchable n-type polymer semiconductor through spatial nanoconfinement effect for ultrasensitive X-ray detectors. The design of high-orientation nanofiber structures and dense interpenetrating polymer networks enhanced the electron-transporting efficiency and stability of the polymer semiconductors. The resultant polymer semiconductors exhibited an ultrahigh sensitivity of 1.52 × 10 4 μC Gy air -1 cm -2 , an ultralow detection limit of 37.7 nGy air s -1 (comparable to the record-low value of perovskite single crystals), and polymer film X-ray imaging was achieved at a low dose rate of 3.65 μGy air s -1 (about 1/12 dose rate of the commercial medical chest X-ray diagnosis). Meanwhile, the hybrid semiconductor films could sustain 100% biaxial stretching strain with minimal degeneracy in photoelectrical performances. The optoelectronic skin is acknowledged as the world's current cutting-edge technology in the fields of wearable healthcare monitoring, soft robotics, artificial retinas, and so on. However, the difficulty in preparing stretchable photosensitive polymers and the high-crystallization nature of most reported photosensitive materials (such as perovskites) severely restrict the development of skin-like optoelectronic devices. Herein, a surface energy-induced self-assembly methodology is proposed to form easily transferrable and flexible perovskite quantum dot (PQD) films with a worm-like morphology. Furthermore, intrinsically stretchable phototransistors (ISTPTs) are fabricated based on a stretchable photosensitive layer heterojunction consisting of worm-like PQD films and hybrid polymer semiconductors. The obtained ISTPTs display highly sensitive response to high-energy photons of X-ray (with a detection limit of 79 nGy s -1 , that is 560 times lower than commercial medical chest X-ray diagnosis) and ultraviolet (with photosensitivity of 5 × 10 6 and detectable light intensity of 50 nW cm -2 among the highest performance of reported photodetectors). In addition, these ISTPTs demonstrate desirable e-skin characteristics with high strain tolerance, high sensing specificity, high optical transparency, and good skin conformability. We present the synthesis and multifunctional utilization of core-shell Fe3O4 polydopamine nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA NPs) to serve as the enabling platform for a range of applications including responsive drug delivery, recyclable catalyst support, and adsorbent. Magnetite Fe3O4 NPs formed in a one-pot process by the hydrothermal approach were coated with a polydopamine shell layer of ~20 nm in thickness. The as prepared Fe3O4@PDA NPs were used for the controlled drug release in a pH-sensitive manner via reversible bonding between catechol and boronic acid groups of PDA and the anticancer drug bortezomib (BTZ), respectively. The facile deposition of Au NPs atop Fe3O4@PDA NPs was achieved by utilizing PDA as both the reducing agent and the coupling agent. The nanocatalysts exhibited high catalytic performance for the reduction of o-nitrophenol. Furthermore, the recovery and reuse of the catalyst was demonstrated 10 times without any detectible loss in activity. Finally, the PDA layers were converted into carbon to obtain Fe3O4@C and used as an adsorbent for the removal of Rhodamine B from an aqueous solution. The synergistic combination of unique features of PDA and magnetic nanoparticles establishes these core-shell NPs as a versatile platform for multiple applications.

The chain sequence of a poly(styrene-co-methyl acrylate) copolymer is designed to form a V-shaped gradient sequence via controlled/living radical emulsion copolymerization. This specially designed chain sequence gives this common copolymer the capacity of multishape memory. Two donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymer PDVTs based on diketopyrrolopyrole and (E)-2-(2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)thiophene (TVT) units are synthesized for solution-processed field-effect transistors (FETs). The highly π-extended TVT units strengthen the coplanarity of the polymer backbone. Microelectronic circuits/arrays produced via high-speed printing instead of traditional photolithographic processes offer an appealing approach to creating the long-sought after, low-cost, large-area flexible electronics. Foremost among critical enablers to propel this paradigm shift in manufacturing is a stable, solution-processable, high-performance semiconductor for printing functionally capable thin-film transistors - fundamental building blocks of microelectronics. We report herein the processing and optimisation of solution-processable polymer semiconductors for thin-film transistors, demonstrating very high field-effect mobility, high on/off ratio, and excellent shelf-life and operating stabilities under ambient conditions. Exceptionally high-gain inverters and functional ring oscillator devices on flexible substrates have been demonstrated. This optimised polymer semiconductor represents a significant progress in semiconductor development, dispelling prevalent skepticism surrounding practical usability of organic semiconductors for high-performance microelectronic devices, opening up application opportunities hitherto functionally or economically inaccessible with silicon technologies, and providing an excellent structural framework for fundamental studies of charge transport in organic systems.

We report the metal-catalyst-free synthesis of high-quality polycrystalline graphene on dielectric substrates [silicon dioxide (SiO(2)) or quartz] using an oxygen-aided chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The growth was carried out using a CVD system at atmospheric pressure. After high-temperature activation of the growth substrates in air, high-quality polycrystalline graphene is subsequently grown on SiO(2) by utilizing the oxygen-based nucleation sites. The growth mechanism is analogous to that of growth for single-walled carbon nanotubes. Graphene-modified SiO(2) substrates can be directly used in transparent conducting films and field-effect devices. The carrier mobilities are about 531 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) in air and 472 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) in N(2), which are close to that of metal-catalyzed polycrystalline graphene. The method avoids the need for either a metal catalyst or a complicated and skilled postgrowth transfer process and is compatible with current silicon processing techniques.

It is highly demanded to understand the confinement effect on nanoconfined polymers. Recent studies reported a strong perturbation of local dynamics and substantial alteration of glass transition temperature Tg at nanoscale. However, how confinement affects the mechanical properties of polymers is not fully understood. Here, we show that the modulus of thin polymer films could be remarkedly altered through a polymer–polymer interface. The modulus of a thin polystyrene (PS) film next to a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was determined from the PS–PDMS bilayer bulging test. A series of experiments show that the modulus of PS can be increased up to 37%, when the modulus of the neighboring PDMS varies from 1.04 to 4.88 MPa. The results demonstrate a strong sensitivity of mechanical properties of thin polymers to the hard/soft environment, which we attribute to the change of high-mobility layer by the polymer–polymer interface. The demand for applications, such as coatings, separation filters, and electronic packaging, has greatly driven the research of polymer films. At nanometer scale, mechanical properties of thin polymer films can significantly deviate from bulk. Despite outstanding progresses, there still lack deep discussions on nonlinear viscoelastic–viscoplastic response and their interactions under nanoconfinement. In this work, by conducting measurements via the bubble inflation method and modelling using Schapery and Perzyna equations, we demonstrate nonlinear viscoelastic–viscoplastic properties of freely standing thin polystyrene (PS) films. The results show the unchanged glassy compliance and the rubbery stiffening phenomenon for thin PS films, where the lower rubbery plateau in rubbery stiffening may originate from the induced molecular orientation by plastic deformation. With decreasing film thickness, viscosity and yield stress in viscoplasticity increase in an exponential and a linear trend, respectively, indicating the significant role of nanoconfinement effect on viscoplastic properties. These findings may reveal that there are many properties from linear viscoelasticity to nonlinear viscoelasticity–viscoplasticity that need to be explored and unveiled for sufficient understanding of the nanoconfinement effect on altering mechanical behavior of polymers. This article discusses the recent progress in the development of high-mobility polymer semiconductors with various functionalities. These semiconductors have advantages such as easy solution processing, large-area manufacturing, mechanical strength, and flexibility. The article focuses on the integration of high mobility with stretchability, strong luminescence, photolithography patterning, and efficient thermoelectric conversion. Intrinsically stretchable light‐emitting polymer semiconductors are essential building blocks for bioelectronics and display textiles. Stretchability is challenging for rigid conjugated polymers unless sacrificing charge mobility by introducing amorphous domains. High‐performance light‐emitting properties designed with twisted angle are undesirable for conductive materials. Hence, the concurrent strategies hardly satisfy the balance of stretchability, light‐emitting and mobility. Herein, a morphology engineering is proposed by controlling micro‐crystalline and limiting aggregation, that four intrinsically stretchable emissive polymers with good charge mobility based on indacenodithiophene (IDT) are obtained. Polymers reveal good emission properties with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) of about 20%, while stretchable modulus and charge mobility are tunable by backbone and weight. Specifically emphasizing, IDT‐2T‐H retains high performance of charge mobility and PLQY even at 100% strain. Therefore, organic light emitting diodes are fabricated based on it and showing the luminance of 176.2 cd cm−2, which verifies the potential of technique to reconcile integration of stretchability, light‐emitting, and mobility. This is the first attempt to integrate balanced mechanical, optical, and electrical properties through micro‐crystalline aggregation‐limited morphology in one polymer, offering a feasible approach to advanced integrated circuit and multi‐functional electronics in the future. The development of polymer semiconductors with strong luminescence and high mobility has always been challenging, and achieving both properties together is considered paradoxical according to molecular design principles. Studies on novel molecular species with unique optoelectrical characteristics are limited. Herein, a novel fully rigid coplanar thiophene‐pyridal[1,2,3]triazole‐thiophene (T‐PT‐T) class structure with considerable intramolecular noncovalent interactions is proposed. To balance luminescence and carrier transport properties, a series of non‐conventional regioregular conjugated polymers (PPTs) with suitable energy gaps (Egs ≈ 1.8 eV) are developed, which exhibit near‐infrared (NIR, 700–1000 nm) light emission and high mobility. One of the synthesized polymers, PPT‐2, exhibits an excellent photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 9% in the solid‐state and a high mobility reaching 0.35 cm2 V−1 s−1, indicating superior performance compared to other NIR light‐emitting polymer semiconductors. Large area and highly aligned polymer semiconductor sub-microwires were fabricated using the coaxial focused electrohydrodynamic jet printing technology. As indicated by the results, the sub-microwire arrays have smooth morphology, well reproducibility and controllable with a width of ~110 nm. Analysis shows that the molecular chains inside the sub-microwires mainly exhibited edge-on arrangement and the π-stacking direction (010) of the majority of crystals is parallel to the long axis of the sub-microwires. Sub-microwires based organic field effect transistors showed high mobility with an average of 1.9 cm2 V−1 s−1, approximately 5 times higher than that of thin film based organic field effect transistors. In addition, the number of sub-microwires can be conveniently controlled by the printing technique, which can subsequently concisely control the performance of organic field effect transistors. This work demonstrates that sub-microwires fabricated by the coaxial focused electrohydrodynamic jet printing technology create an alternative path for the applications of high-performance organic flexible device. Ambipolar polymer semiconductors are potentially serviceable for logic circuits, light-emitting field-effect transistors (LFETs) and polymer solar cells (PSCs). Although several high-performance ambipolar polymers have been developed, their optoelectronic devices are generally processed from toxic chlorinated solvents. To achieve the commercial applications of organic FETs (OFETs), the polymers should be processed from nonchlorinated solvents, instead of chlorinated solvents. However, most conjugated polymers show poor solubility in nonchlorinated solvents. It is of great importance to develop ambipolar polymers that can be processed from nonchlorinated solvents. Here, we develop a nonchlorinated solvent processed polymer named poly[7-fluoro-N, N′-di(4-decyltetradecyl)-7′-azaisoindigo-6′,6″-(thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-diyl)-7‴-fluoro-N″, N‴-di(4-decyltetradecyl)-7″-azaisoindigo-6,6‴-([2,2″-bithiophene]-5,5″-diyl)] (PITTI-BT) by designing a monomer with a large molar mass. The polymer displays good solubility in p-xylene (PX). Well-aligned films of PITTI-BT are achieved by an off-center spin-coating (SC) method. Based on the high-quality films, the OFETs fabricated from PX solution achieve record ambipolar performance with hole and electron mobilities of 3.06 and 2.81 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. Application of high‐performance unipolar n‐type polymeric semiconductors lagged behind due to those polymers' poor solubility in green solvents. Traditional methods, such as random copolymerization and asymmetric structuring, enhance solubility but reduce mobility. Here, a universal "lipophilicity strategy" for eco‐friendly processing is reported. This strategy could effectively improve the solubility of polymers without sacrificing crystallinity thus maintaining good mobility of the devices. CF3 group and SCF3 group, which are famous for their high lipophilicity, are introduced to (E)‐1,2‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)ethane (TVT). The solubility of two monomers is confirmed to be 5 and 16 times higher than the brominated counterpart, respectively. Moreover, CF3TVT and SCF3TVT not only improve solubility of the polymers but also reduce energy levels of donor unit due to their strong electron withdrawing property. By using Ozawa's condition, three unipolar n‐type semiconducting polymers are obtained through direct (hetero)arylation polycondensation (DHAP). Among them, CF3TVT based P2 processed by xylene solutions exhibited the best unipolar n‐type mobility up to 1.37 cm2 V−1 s−1 and reached current on/off ratio of 108, for the first time realizing both green synthesis and nonchlorinated processing. Abstract: Ammonia/amine gas sensors have received increasing attention in recent years, due to their applications in monitoring of meat and seafood spoilage and air pollution as well as diagnosis of chronic diseases. Herein, a new conjugated polymer PTTEH is developed, which is composed of thieno[3,4‐b]thiophene units, with very low bandgap. The low bandgap and the existence of radical state endow the polymer thin film with good electrical conductivity. As a result, PTTEH is successfully utilized for construction of a field‐effect transistor (FET) sensor for ammonia and amines at low driving voltages, which are advantageous for practical applications. Moreover, this FET sensor shows good selectivity and high sensitivity (down to 10 ppb) toward ammonia and amines. Accordingly, the real‐time monitoring of meat spoilage is achieved with this FET sensor. These studies will open a new venue to fabricate sensitive, portable, and small size sensors for real‐time monitoring of chemical vapors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lead (II) perovskite (PV, e.g., CH3NH3PbI3–xClx) with 3 wt% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) produces an ≈90 nm film containing a PVP–PV composite consisting of ≈15‐nm‐sized PV nanocrystals. Solar cells using 3 wt% PVP–PV have several advantages over a device using nondoped PV, which include an increase in transparency, stability of the film, efficiency, and reproducibility. ABSTRACT The mechanical properties of linear and V-shaped compositional gradient copolymer of styrene and n-butyl acrylate with composition of around 55 wt % styrene were investigated by comparing with their block copolymer counterparts. Compared with their block copolymer counterparts, the gradient copolymers showed lower elastic modulus, much larger elongation at break, and similar ultimate tensile strength at room temperature. This performance could be ascribed to that the local moduli continuously change from the hardest nanodomains to the softest nanodomains in the gradient copolymer, which alleviates the stress concentration during tensile test. Compared with the V-shaped gradient (VG) copolymer, the linear gradient copolymer showed much higher elastic modulus but lower elongation at break. The mechanical properties of the gradient copolymers were more sensitive to the change in temperature from 9 °C to 75 °C. With recovery temperature increased from 10 °C to 60 °C, the strain recovery of VG copolymer would change steadily from 40% to 99%. 'Regioselectivity deposition' method is developed to pattern silver electrodes facilely and efficiently by solution-process with high resolution (down to 2 μm) on different substrates in A4 paper size. With the help of this method, large-area, flexible, high-performance polymer field-effect transistors based on the silver electrodes and polyimide insulator are fabricated with bottom-contact configuration by all-solution processes. The polymer devices exhibit high performance with average field-effect mobility over 1.0 cm2 V−1 s−1 (the highest mobility up to 1.5 cm2 V−1 s−1) and excellent environmental stability and flexibility, indicating the cost effectiveness of this method for practical applications in organic electronics. Abstract: The authors report on low operation voltage memory cells based on heterojunction ambipolar organic transistors with polymer gate electret (PGE). The introduction of the N,N′-dioctyl perylene diimide/pentacene heterojunction into the memory OFETs with PGE successfully lowered the memory cells’ reading, writing and erasing programmed voltages (reading voltage of 2V, writing and erasing programmed voltages of 10V). Meanwhile, the memory devices showed reproducible and durable memory behavior in more than 500 cycles’ testing. The built-in electric field-effect at heterojunction surface should efficiently reduce operation voltage of the memory devices. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
