The banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus Germar is the most important pest of banana and plantain. In banana agroecosystems, cover cropping is a practice that prevents the use of herbicides and may provide natural habitats for generalist predators. Here, we assessed the effect of a cover crop, Paspalum notatum Flüggé on the ant community, dermapterans and C. sordidus. In investigating the dumps of Pheidole jelskii Mayr colonies, we found that most of carcasses belonged to other ant species (> 96%) and very few (< 1%) belonged to C. sordidus. In plots with banana plants and with and without a cover crop, the occurrences of almost all ant species were negatively correlated with each other, but the occurrence of ants was not correlated with weevil abundance. However, we found a negative relationship between the abundances of dermapterans and C. sordidus, both of which were negatively related to presence of the cover crop. These results indicate that dermapterans are probably the main biological control agents of C. sordidus and that cover cropping may increase C. sordidus regulation.

Ground cover management (GCM) is an important agricultural practice used to reduce weed growth, erosion and runoff, and improve soil fertility. In the present study, an approach to account for GCM is proposed in the modeling of pesticide emissions to evaluate the environmental sustainability of agricultural practices. As a starting point, we include a cover crop compartment in the mass balance of calculating initial (within minutes after application) and secondary (including additional processes) pesticide emission fractions. The following parameters were considered: (i) cover crop occupation between the rows of main field crops, (ii) cover crop canopy density, and (iii) cover crop family. Two modalities of cover crop occupation and cover crop canopy density were tested for two crop growth stages, using scenarios without cover crops as control. From that, emission fractions and related ecotoxicity impacts were estimated for pesticides applied to tomato production in Martinique (French West Indies) and to grapevine cultivation in the Loire Valley (France). Our results demonstrate that, on average, the presence of a cover crop reduced the pesticide emission fraction reaching field soil by a factor of 3 compared with bare soil, independently of field crop and its growth stage, and cover crop occupation and density. When considering cover exported from the field, ecotoxicity impacts were reduced by approximately 65% and 90%, compared with bare soil for grapevine and tomato, respectively, regardless of the emission distribution used. Because additional processes may influence emission distributions under GCM, such as runoff, leaching, or preferential flow, further research is required to incorporate these processes consistently in our proposed GCM approach. Considering GCM in pesticide emission modeling highlights the potential of soil cover to reduce pesticide emissions to field soil and related freshwater ecotoxicity. Meloidogyne spp. and Hirschmanniella spp. are among the most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs). They threaten rice production, the main staple food in Asia. Cropping systems that promote natural biocontrol and plant tolerance to diseases are put forward as sustainable solutions to protect rice from these pests. In particular, cropping systems managed under conservation agriculture (CA) are promising because they improve soil health and functioning. We investigated the effects of two cropping system components in a Cambodian field, (i) CA practices, i.e., no-tillage with a cover crop Stylosanthes guianensis (cv. Nina), versus conventional plow-based tillage with no cover crop, and (ii) using IR504, IR64, Azucena and Zhonghua 11 rice varieties, on PPNs in roots and on communities (bacteria, fungi and nematodes) in the rhizosphere. We used a sequencing approach via amplicon barcoding to target microbial marker genes (16 S and ITS rRNA gene) and a microscopic approach to identify and quantify nematodes in the rhizosphere compartment. The variety had less effect than agricultural practices on the infection by PPNs and on the assembly of the three rhizosphere communities. Under CA, the abundance of PPNs extracted from the roots was reduced by 88%. Soil quality was substantially improved (+83% of total Kjeldahl nitrogen, +34% of available phosphorus, +10% of exchangeable potassium, +110% of soil organic carbon, +30% for the cation exchange capacity), thus providing more basal resources for microbial decomposers, especially fungi (+164% putative saprotrophs). Characterization of the three rhizosphere communities revealed a shift in the structure associated with soil enrichment. Both microbial richness (+3% for bacteria and +38% for fungi) and diversity (Shannon index, +11% for fungi and +5% for nematodes) increased. The relative abundance of taxa was modified by CA with notably more mycorrhizal fungi (+329% Glomeromycota spp.) and fewer Pratylenchidae nematodes (−92% Hirschmanniella spp.) in the rhizosphere. The reassembly of the communities using CA was associated with regulation of PPN populations. The reduction in Meloidogyne spp. abundance in roots (−64%) was correlated with the maturity of the food web (maturity index, +10% under CA) and with the increase in the relative abundance of omnivorous nematodes in the rhizosphere (+68% under CA). Seven years of CA in this field enabled the whole soil food web to mature thus creating a favorable niche for potentially predatory nematodes and microbes antagonistic against PPNs. This study confirms that CA is an alternative to nematicides to limit infection by PPNs in rice cropping systems.

Cover crops are crucial to diversify cropping systems into more agroecological systems by providing ecosystem services, such as reduction of nitrate leaching, provision of a green manure effect, and soil carbon storage. However, they can influence water drainage and nitrogen (N) or water availability for the succeeding crop, depending on their management and the climate. In this simulation study, we used the STICS model to predict the influence of cover crop species, date of sowing and termination, and cover crop residue management on N and water balances, and the yield and stress of the succeeding cash crop. We performed 25-year simulations for five contrasting sites in south-western France, which is a temperate region of Europe with dry summers. As expected, cover crops decreased nitrate leaching effectively but also decreased drainage by a mean of 5–40 mm. This decrease depended mainly on the sowing and termination dates, while the decrease in nitrate leaching varied greatly among sites and depended most on sowing date, followed by cover crop species and then termination date. Cover crops had little influence on soil water content in the upper 0.1 m of soil at sowing of the succeeding cash crop, but decreased soil water content of the total soil profile by 0–30 mm. Soil water content depended most on termination date, followed by species and then site. Total soil mineral N content (SNC) also decreased, by 5–40 kg N.ha−1, at the three driest sites and up to 10 kg N.ha−1 at the rainiest site. Termination date, the second-most influential factor on SNC, indicated that later termination resulted in lower SNC than that after bare soil. N uptake by the succeeding cash crop depended on species and termination date, and a legume cover crop and earlier termination date resulted in higher N uptake. The decrease in maize and sunflower yield was due mainly to changes in the N stress index during the vegetative phase for maize, and both vegetative and reproductive phases for sunflower. No water stress or increase in irrigation volumes was predicted or was correlated with yield changes, except at dry sites for the few years that experienced a severe drought in spring. While cover crops decreased nitrate leaching effectively, they decreased drainage and could induce N stress for the succeeding crop, particularly in dry regions. Including legumes in mixtures and adapting the termination date to local climate conditions could decrease or avoid these negative effects.

International audience; Aims : In vineyards, service crops may increase water infiltration and positively contribute to soil water refilling, but may also increase the risk of competition for water with grapevines which could impair grape yield over several years. This study aimed to test the relationships between service crop functional traits and two related services of major interest in viticulture: runoff control and water provisioning.Methods : We measured the water stock, the cover rate, along with above- and belowground functional markers of 38 plant communities after a winter growing season in an experimental vineyard, to assess relationships between service crop functional markers, runoff control and water provisioning.Results : Both aboveground and belowground functional markers were significant predictors of service provision at the community level. The plant aboveground dry matter content was positively related to soil water stocks and negatively related to the cover rate of the communities, while the specific leaf area (SLA) was positively related to the cover rate. The rooting depth and morphological root traits (specific root length and very fine root fraction) were negatively related with the soil water stock. Moreover, these results agree with ecological theories about the relationships between plant functional markers, plant ecological strategies and resources use.Conclusions : The identification of functional markers related to service provision may help us to select species or communities service crops that could perform interesting trade-offs between multiple services due to a suited combination of related markers, and provide insights for plant selection in order to breed plant varieties and cultivars with the aim of providing agroecosystem services.

International audience; Conservation agriculture (CA) is one strategy with which both sustainability and productivity can be achieved by improving soil health. However, linkages between practices, soil health and cropping system performance remain poorly disentangled. We assessed the relationships between soil health and cropping system performance for three maize-based cropping systems in New Caledonia. Two CA systems, one with direct seeding into a mixed species dead mulch (CA-DM) and one into a stylo living mulch (CA-LM), were compared to a conventional tillage (CT) system. CA vs. CT experiment started in 2011, whereas the differentiation between CA-DM and CA-LM was initiated in 2017 only. In 2018, soil health was evaluated using Biofunctool (R), a set of ten in-field tools that assess soil carbon transformation, structure maintenance and nutrient cycling functions. The performance of the three cropping systems were assessed by monitoring weeds, maize growth and yield components. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to disentangle the links between agricultural management, soil health and cropping system performance. Soil structure maintenance and nutrient cycling functions were higher under CA-DM and CA-LM than under CT, and carbon transformation function was higher under CA-DM than under CT and CA-LM. Overall, the soil health index (SHI) was 1.3-fold higher under CA systems than under CT. Cropping system management had both direct and indirect effects on soil functioning and crop productivity leading to a 1.3-fold higher yield under CA than under CT. The direct and indirect effects of CA systems on soil health had positive impacts on ecosystem services (i.e., productivity, weed regulation and soil ecosystem services). Such integrative approaches that account for the relationships and possible trade-offs between cropping system components enable a better understanding of the effects and the performance of practices, and support adaptive agricultural management.

Ecological theory suggests that biodiversity has a positive and stabilizing effect on the delivery of ecosystem services. Yet, the impacts of increasing the diversity of cultivated crop species or varieties in agroecosystems are still under scrutiny. The empirical evidence available is scattered in scope, agronomic and geographical contexts and impacts on ecosystem services may depend on the type of diversification strategy used. To robustly assess the effects of crop diversification in agroecosystems, we compiled the results of 95 meta-analyses integrating 5,156 experiments conducted over 84 experimental years and representing more than 54,500 paired observations on 120 crop species in 85 countries. Overall, our synthesis of experimental data from across the globe shows that crop diversification enhances not only crop production (median effect +14%), but also the associated biodiversity (+24%, i.e. the biodiversity of non-cultivated plants and animals), and several supporting and regulating ecosystem services including water quality (+51%), pest and disease control (+63%) and soil quality (+11%). However, there was substantial variability in the results for each individual ecosystem service between different diversification strategies like agroforestry, intercropping, cover-crops, crop rotation or variety mixtures. Agroforestry is particularly effective in delivering multiple ecosystem services, i.e. water use and quality, pest and diseases regulation, associated biodiversity, long-term soil productivity and quality. Variety mixtures, instead, provide the lowest benefits, while the other strategies show intermediate results. Our results highlight that while increasing the diversity of cultivated crop species or varieties in agroecosystems represents a very promising strategy for more sustainable land management, contributing to enhanced yields, enhanced biodiversity and ecosystem services, some crop diversification strategies are more effective than others in supporting key ecosystem services.

Maize monoculture systems often cause environmental impacts such as soil erosion, nitrate leaching and pesticide transfer. Conservation tillage and the use of cover crops appear to hold promise for limiting these impacts, but questions about their performance remain, particularly during the transition period after conventional soil tillage ceases. In this study, effects of no-tillage maize and fallow-period management with different cover crop species, either pure or in mixtures, were studied on the agronomic performance of maize and on soil N and water dynamics. The study combined field experiments over three years (2012–2014) and simulation modelling with the STICS model. The biomass of cover crops produced during the fallow period varied from 0.8 to 10.5 t dry matter ha−1 depending on the cover crop species and date of termination. Differences in soil water content were quantified among the treatments studied, with the lowest water content at the beginning of the maize growing season with late termination of a cover crop composed of pure faba bean or a vetch-oat mixture in 2014 (25–50% of plant-water available capacity). Maize grain yields ranged from 8.5 to 13.6 t dry matter ha−1, with the lowest yields in the bare soil treatment. Simulations with STICS were consistent with the observations and indicated a decrease in drainage of 8–38 mm year−1, depending on the year and cover crop. Introducing cover crops into maize systems is a powerful mechanism for maintaining production while improving environmental performances during the transition phase of soil properties in conservation tillage.

Cover plants have a high potential to manage weeds through competition for shared resources in tropical agrosystems. Assessing the abilities of a large number of different plant species to compete with weeds requires long-term experiments in different pedoclimatic environments. Our study was based on a set of 10 trials including 46 species of cover plants and performed from 2016 to 2018 in three sites in Reunion. Our aim was to identify and measure plant traits that optimize plant coverage and weed control by cover plants under tropical climate. We characterized two traits of interest (a soil coverage efficiency index and a coverage growth rate) using a hierarchical clustering analysis and compared them between plant area of origin, life cycle or growth habit. The ability for cover plant to cover efficiently and rapidly the soil increased with growth rate in height and leaf appearance rate while tends to decrease with thermal time for emergence. Accordingly, weed control efficiency (low weed coverage and dry mass) was strongly correlated and increasing with cover plant growth rate in coverage, height and biomass. The characterization of plant species using functional traits enabled to identify cover plants which could be used in tropical agrosystems as an alternative to herbicides. Assuming that the spatial and temporal combinations with the main crop will determine the performances of the system, we discussed a trait-based methodology to identify the cover plants adapted to sugarcane agrosystems in Reunion.

Soil tillage and cover crops impact spontaneous vegetation in agrosystems. Soil tillage destroys seedlings and can affect the soil seedbank. Cover crops compete with naturally occurring spontaneous species. Our aim was to gain insight into how soil tillage (here, the false seedbed technique) and cover crops impact the spontaneous vegetation in fallows preceding banana crops. In a fallowed field in Guadeloupe (French West Indies), two factors were combined in a split-plot design: the soil tillage modality before cover crop sowing (with or without the false seedbed technique) and the cover crop species (Crotalaria spectabilis, Pueraria phaseoloïdes, a 50/50 mix of Brachiaria decumbens + Brachiaria ruziziensis, a spontaneous vegetation control). On a monthly basis, in three permanent quadrats per sub-plot, all spontaneous species were identified and their numbers counted, while calculating the species richness and Shannon's diversity index. The spontaneous vegetation dynamics contrasted depending on the treatment. From 7 months post-sowing the species density, richness and Shannon index were significantly lower in treatments with B. decumbens + B. ruziziensis and P. phaseoloïdes, while in treatments with C. spectabilis, the species density and richness were significantly higher with than without the false seedbed technique. These effects were probably related to differences in the competitive ability of the cover crop used and, to a lesser extent, to the false seedbed effects on the soil seedbank. This is the first study to show that under a tropical climate, sown cover crop species combined with different soil tillage modalities have substantial impacts on the species density, richness and diversity of the spontaneous plant community over a 1-year period. These results could help farmers in their weed control strategies by providing them with a deeper understanding of the effects of practices on the spontaneous plant community.

International audience; In Martinique or La Reunion, French authorities recently banned the use of pesticides for the management of "soil-borne pathogens" on pineapple after several decades of intensive monoculture where the natural balance between beneficial and harmful communities of soil organisms has disappeared. Today, increasing infestation of pineapple by the nematode R. reniformis and other "soil-borne pathogens" causes severe damage to the crop. New cropping systems with innovative ecological nematode management are needed. An eco-friendly cropping system, which comprised rotation of sunn hemp (C. juncea), pineapple, a natural grass fallow and another cash crop, eggplant, consistently reduced the inoculum of nematodes. Nematode populations were reduced by 86.4%, 82% and 46.5% respectively under pineapple, sunn hemp and grass fallow compared to infestations of eggplant (3456 nematodes .100g(-1) of soil) after several rotations. Integrating a chemical induction of systemic resistance or application of an endophytic bacteria recovered from pineapple roots, Bacillus sp. GVS2, helped maintain low populations of nematodes during the vegetative cycle. On two pineapple varieties, MD2 and Victoria (Queen), two different treatments were applied monthly in the field, methyl jasmonate (10(-4) M, 10 ml per plant), or a suspension of Bacillus sp. GVS2 (10(8) CFU ml(-1), 10 ml per plant) isolated from pineapple roots. After eight months, the nematode populations were reduced respectively on MD2 and Victoria (Queen) by 58.3% and 50.3% with the methyl jasmonate and by 59.6% and 54.3% with the Bacillus sp. GVS2 compared to controls. Because of the efficiency of sunn hemp in reducing the inoculum of nematodes, no significant differences in vegetative growth were observed using the D leaf weight and the estimated root length densities (RLD). The potential of pest management through eco-friendly cropping systems for pineapple with a biocontrol for nematodes with no pesticide is discussed.

International audience; Highlights:• Spontaneous service plants strategies present a high spatial and temporal diversity.• Strategies can be measured by calculating the Coverage Index (CI) for each vineyard.• Higher CI was linked to quality labels, organic crop protection and low target yields.• No link was found between CI and water and soil resources in vineyards.• Target services by winegrowers are consistent with the CI and period coverage.Abstract: 'Service plants' include spontaneous vegetation or sown species of cover crops associated with perennial crops in the rows or inter-rows with a high potential to provide ecosystem functions and services. In vineyards, service plants target specific services depending on the management strategy implemented by the winegrower, including the plant species, the surface covered, the plant growth control and destruction date. Understanding the management strategies linked to their associated target services at the regional scale is necessary to better help winegrowers, advisers and policy makers regarding an adapted use of service plants. To do this, we conducted a survey in 2016 among 334 winegrowers in Languedoc-Roussillon region in France, enquiring about their service plant management practices during the season 2014-2015. Given the diversity of the strategies of service plant management, we proposed a typology analyzing their spatial and temporal dimensions. Further, we present a Coverage Index (CI), which combines both temporal and spatial dimensions of the service plant management strategies. We conducted a multiple components analysis and clustering to create a vineyard typology and applied linear models to find correlations between the CI and specific vineyard characteristics. Three quarters of interviewed winegrowers sowed or maintained service plants in their vineyards; 41 % used a winter service plant strategy; 8.4 % a semi-permanent and 27.3 % a permanent service plant strategy. The preferred surface coverage strategy was full surface during grapevine dormancy and its reduction to half of the inter-rows after grapevine budburst. However, the diversity of surface coverage strategies during the grapevine vegetative period was remarkable. Lower water resources and specific soil characteristics were not linked to the service plant management strategies. Higher CI was associated with vineyards presenting quality labels (PDO and Organic), independent wine-making and lower target yields, showing that the added value of producing high quality wine plays an important role when implementing service plants in vineyards. Overall, our study showed: i) the popularity of spontaneous service plant strategies; ii) the spatial and temporal diversity of service plant management strategies and iii) the utility of the CI to study the implementation of service plants and to understand the motivations and constraints of their use.

Multi-service cover crops are used to provide ecosystem services, particularly for nitrogen management, such as “nitrate catching” and "green manuring" effects. Sowing cover crop mixtures including legumes and non-legumes have the advantage of combining the provision of both services related to N management thanks to phenomena of niche complementarity and/or facilitation in the capture of abiotic resources. When complementarities are optimized, these species mixtures can achieve both effects similarly to those provided by the average of mono specific cover crops, especially for nitrate catching. In addition, the complementarity for the access to light thanks to species having different aerial architectures and contrasted temporal complementarities enable them to obtain services in relay, in particular in the case of the longest fallow periods over mid-Spring. However, in order to achieve the targeted services, attention must be paid to limit competition between species in particular during early stages.

National audience; The data presented in this article describe 21 species that can be found in banana cropping systems: 17 cover crops species, 2 spontaneous species and 2 cultivars of banana. The cover crop species belongs mainly to Fabaceae family, but also to Poaceae, Euphorbiacea and Asteraceae. Four repetition of each species were cultivated individually, in the field, under non-limiting conditions. 40 variables were measured on whole plant, leaves and roots, at flowering or after six months of growth for longer cycle species. This dataset is made available to provide data on these species, enable comparisons between datasets and meta-analysis on cover crop or on species presented in arable fields. The data presented in this article were used in the research articles entitled “Trait-based characterisation of cover plants' light competition strategies for weed control in banana cropping systems in the French West Indies” (Tardy et al. 2015) and “Trait-based characterization of soil exploitation strategies of banana, weeds and cover plant species” (Tardy et al. 2017).

The dataset presented in this article describe 33 species or varieties of service crops cultivated in population under non-limiting conditions. The description was made at flowering. 41 variables were measured on leaves, stems, roots and seeds. They related to plant phenology (1), morphology (13), physiology (1), biochemistry (18), size (6) and reproduction (2). This dataset is made available to enable comparisons between datasets, extended analysis and meta-analysis on cover crops. The data presented in this article were partly used in the research article entitled “A trait-based characterization of cover plants to assess their potential to provide a set of ecological services in banana cropping systems” (Damour et al., 2014).

The data presented in this data paper describe the early growth of cover crop cultivated in growth chamber under non-limiting conditions. Seventeen species of four botanical groups were described after one month of growth. Traits related to plant growth and leaf area development were measured (five traits) and calculated (eight traits). This data set is made available to enable comparisons between dataset, extended analysis and meta-analysis on cover crop traits. International audience; The trait-based approach can address questions in order to understand how the functioning of organisms scales up to that of ecosystems and controls some of the services they deliver to humans, including in agriculture. However, the importance of interspecific vs the intraspecific trait variability (ITV) for classifying species according to their traits in agrosystems on a large diversity of pedoclimatic situations and cropping systems remains still open. Here, we addressed three questions: How do measured traits vary across years and seasons? Are species rankings conserved across years and season? And which traits and species are the more stable and repeatable for sown and spontaneous species? We conducted a two-year experiment in a vineyard, and we measured four leaf and plant functional traits of 14 sown species and 43 spontaneous species that grew among sown species. Traits were measured at two key phenological stages for grapevine: budburst and flowering during two successive years with contrasted rainfall (2017 and 2018). We studied seasonal and interannual trait variations, rankings between species, and variance partitioning. The species factor explained the greatest part of trait variations across years and seasons. Sown and spontaneous species traits varied in the same way, and traits related to plant dry matter contents were the more stable across periods. Moreover, species rankings were conserved across years and seasons for all traits except plant height. Sown species showed better ranking conservation than spontaneous species overall. The trait-based approach seems promising for the comparison of various cropping systems involving sown and spontaneous species, and may help identifying service crop species related to specific agroecosystem services. Further research is needed to bring more knowledge on trait variations under a diversity of agrosystems, and to improve theoretical frameworks that would help the design of sustainable agrosystems that provide multiple ecosystem services.

On upland soils in tropical Africa, common production constraints of rice and maize on smallholder farms are poor soil fertility—resulting from soil erosion and nutrient depletion—and infestation by witchweeds (Striga spp.). In Madagascar where these crops are often grown in rotation, combining legume cover crops with no-till and crop residue mulching—labelled conservation agriculture (CA)—may address these problems. Previously, it was shown that CA practices contribute to steep reductions in Striga asiatica infection. In the current study, a 4-year field experiment was conducted to test, for the first time, the hypothesis that CA practices also contribute to crop yield and soil improvements under Striga-infested conditions. The conventional mono-crop rice–maize rotation practice, involving seasonal tillage and crop residue removal, was compared to three rice–maize rotation systems following CA practices, each with a different legume cover crop option: (1) two short-cycle annual species, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and mucuna (Mucuna pruriens); (2) a long-cycle annual, ricebean (Vigna umbellata); and (3) a perennial, stylosanthes (S. guianensis). Rice yields, as well as yield variability, generally increased by changing from the conventional to a CA practice, and maize yields were variable and low in particular under the CA practices. CA practices significantly reduced soil displacement by rainwater runoff and increased soil nitrogen and pH levels (0–20 cm depth), in particular with stylosanthes as cover crop, but did not result in a significant change in soil organic carbon concentration. Rice yields correlated negatively with Striga asiatica plant numbers in years with moderate infection levels. This is the first study that shows mixed outcomes from CA practices in tropical cereal rotation systems on degraded, Striga-infested soils, and subsequent entry points for system improvements. Suggested improvements include judicious cover crop management, complementary fertilizer applications and selection of competitive, resistant and adapted crop varieties.

International audience; Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is currently cultivated on 19 million ha, and palm oil represents more than one‐third of the global vegetable oil market. Addition of nitrogen (N) via legume cover crop and fertilizers is a common practice in industrial oil palm plantations, however, there is a tendency for N loss, thus contributing significantly to environmental effects. To improve the sustainability of palm oil production, it is crucial to determine which management practices minimize N losses. Continuous field measurements would be cost‐prohibiting as a monitoring tool, and in the case of oil palm, available models do not account for all the potential nitrogen inputs and losses or management practices. In this context, we developed IN‐Palm, a model to help managers and scientists estimate N losses to the environment and identify best management practices. The main challenge was to build the model in a context of knowledge scarcity. Given these objectives and constraints, we developed an agri‐environmental indicator, using the INDIGO method and fuzzy decision trees. We validated the N leaching module of IN‐Palm against field data from Sumatra, Indonesia. IN‐Palm is implemented in an Excel file and uses 21 readily available input variables to compute 17 modules. It estimates annual emissions and scores for each N‐loss pathway and provides recommendations to reduce N losses. IN‐Palm predictions of N leaching were acceptable according to several statistics, with a tendency to underestimate nitrogen leaching. Thus, we highlighted necessary improvements to increase IN‐Palm precision before use in plantations.

International audience; Cover crops are a potential component of agroecological cropping systems, since they may render crop rotations more sustainable. They simultaneously provide multiple ecosystem services, such as decreasing nitrate leaching, decreasing erosion, and increasing soil organic matter. However, cover crops increase evapotranspiration and reduce drainage, which results in a potential disservice for groundwater recharge. Little attention has focused on management of cover crop residues after destruction or their influence on water flux dynamics, particularly in dry and temperate climates. The objective of our study was to analyze and quantify the impact of cover crop management on soil water content and water flux dynamics to understand the main mechanisms of system functioning. We combined a two-year field experiment with crop-model simulations. We performed the field experiment in southwestern France that compared three cover crop treatments, with bare soil as the control. The treatments included (1) living cover crops lasting ca. 9 months from August-April, (2) crushing cover crops in November and leaving them as mulch on the soil, and (3) plowing up cover crops in November to promote residue decomposition and the green manure effect. The STICS soil-crop model was used to predict water fluxes that were not measured and to perform a 20-year independent simulation study based on recent climate series for the experimental site. Our main results indicated that cover crops (1) always reduce water drainage by 20-60 mm compared to that under bare soil; and (2) could significantly reduce soil water content (0-120 cm deep) for the next cash crop by a mean of 20-50 mm, and up to 80 mm in dry spring conditions, but early destruction could decrease this negative impact. The simulations clearly showed that the interaction between climate variability, i.e., rainfall distribution during the fallow period, and cover crop management should be considered to explain the impact of inter-annual variability on the water balance. Thus, destroying cover crops mechanically in late autumn and retaining the residues as mulch could be a good compromise between the multiple services the cover crop provides during the fallow period and avoiding the negative impact on soil water availability for the next cash crop.

In low-input rice-maize rotation systems in the hills of central Madagascar, farmers deal with erratic rainfall, poor soils, high soil erosion risks and infestation by the parasitic weed Striga asiatica (L.) Kuntze. Practices combining zero-tillage with permanent soil cover by intercropped legumes and crop residue mulches — known as Conservation Agriculture (CA)— are proposed as remedy against soil and climatic constraints. Implications of these practices for S. asiatica are unknown. A 4-season factorial experiment compared the current farmer practice of rice − maize rotation, involving seasonal tillage and crop residue removal (CONV), with three rice − maize rotation systems following CA with different cover crops, i.e. Vigna unguiculata (cowpea) and Mucuna pruriens (CACM), Vigna umbellata (ricebean) (CARB), and Stylosanthes guianensis (CAST). Performance of two rice varieties, NERICA-4 and −9, with partial S. asiatica resistance, were compared with the locally popular B22. Parasite emergence time, numbers, and seed bank sizes were recorded. In all CA practices S. asiatica infection was significantly reduced. Best results were obtained with Stylosanthes guianensis (CAST). This species also suppressed ordinary weeds much better than other cover crops. With CAST, average parasite emergence was delayed by 7.5 days (in rice) and 6.3 days (in maize) and infection levels were reduced by 79% (in rice) and 92% (in maize) compared to the conventional farmer practice (CONV). NERICA varieties delayed S. asiatica emergence by 5.7 days (NERICA-9) and 9.7 days (NERICA-4) and reduced infection levels by 57% (NERICA-9) and 91% (NERICA-4) compared to B22. In maize the residual effect of resistance of NERICA-4 resulted in a delay of 7.5 days in S. asiatica emergence and a reduction of 60% in parasite numbers. The best combinations delay S. asiatica emergence by 17.8 days (CAST + NERICA-9) and 19.1 days (CARB + NERICA-4) and reduce the parasite infection levels by 96% (CAST + NERICA-9 or −4) to 98% (CARB + NERICA-4) in rice, compared to CONV + B22. After two full rice-maize rotation cycles S. asiatica seed numbers in the soil (0–10 cm) were 76% (CACM), 78% (CAST) and 86% (CARB) lower than under CONV. Even the combination of zero-tillage, crop residue mulching, cover crops and resistant rice varieties does not entirely prevent S. asiatica parasitism and seed bank increase. Additional measures, targeted to escaping weeds, would be required for fully effective and long-term control.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration was evaluated for several long-term rain-fed cropping systems for conservation agriculture (CA) and conservation tillage (CT) in Cambodia using the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model. The mean crop yield, biomass and SOC stocks of four treatments and three replication in each primary cropping system (rice, soybean and cassava) were used for calibration and validation during the period 2009–2013. The CT and CA1 treatments were assigned to continuous cropping of primary crops. CA2 and CA3 treatments were assigned to rotated primary crops with maize. In all CA treatments, forage or legume cover crops were prior planted and intercropped with the primary crops to maintain full soil cover. The results show that EPIC successfully simulated crop yields, biomass, and SOC. However, the model tended to underestimate SOC in the CT treatments and overestimate SOC in the CA2 and CA3 treatments. Crop residue was found to highly influence SOC sequestration. Sediment loss in the CT treatments was found to be four times greater than CA treatments due to the CT tillage effects. The 20-year future simulations, using historical weather and automatically generated by EPIC, showed a decrease trend in SOC stocks in all CT treatments and an increase trend in most CA treatments, with the greatest increase for CA2 and CA3 treatments. Thus, the CA treatments in combination with the maize rotation were demonstrated to be more efficient to manage SOC sequestration over CA with one continuous primary crop.

New farming technologies such as improved fallow of herbaceous legumes have been developed over the last 20 years as alternatives to traditional yam cropping systems in areas where shifting cultivation is no more possible. One aim of this research was to analyze actual adoption by smallholders of such a technology and influencing factors in the Southern Guinea Savannah in Benin (West Africa). On the other hand, a second objective was to measure agronomic and economic performances of the innovative yam-based cropping systems in comparison with the usual ones under producers’ natural and socioeconomic circumstances in order to discuss the technology potential for large scale adoption. Smallholders with limited land access now develop as usual cropping systems a one-year fallow of Andropogonon gayanus–yam rotation or a maize–yam rotation. Innovative sedentary yam-based systems consist of an Aeschynomene histrix intercropped with maize–yam rotation or a Mucuna pruriens intercropped with maize–yam rotation. Factors potentially affecting adoption were included in a polynomial logit model. Agronomic and economic performances were assessed by the multiple regression and net present value of the 4-years double rotation. Ranking matrix was used to highlight constraints that may impede adoption. Benefits, lessons, and challenges are discussed in this article.

Multi-service cover crops grown during the fallow period between two main cash crops are a tool to support sustainable crop production. Crucifer-legume mixtures may provide improved multi-ecosystem services compared to sole cover crops, but trade-offs between the known crucifer biocontrol potential and N cycling benefits of legumes are uncertain. We review suppressive effects of crucifers as sole crops and in mixtures with legumes for a wide range of pathogenic and beneficial organisms to compare the services and potential disservices of the strategies. We conclude that biocontrol services of crucifer sole crops could be largely maintained in crucifer-legume mixtures while improving nutrient services, and reducing potential disservices. The lack of comprehensive multi-disciplinary field studies that investigate the multi-service paradigm limit our current understanding of the trade-offs between services, but reveal fruitful research opportunities. We emphasize the need to refocus cover crop biocontrol research from a largely “pesticide” paradigm targeting maximum production of bioactive compounds by sole crucifer cover crops, to a multi-service paradigm in which selected crucifer-legume mixtures may offer promise in the quest for the sustainable intensification of agriculture.

International audience; AbstractCover crops provide many ecosystem services, such as soil protection, nitrate pollution of water mitigation, and green manure effects. However, the impact of cover crops on soil water balance is poorly studied, despite its potential impact on groundwater recharge. Some studies reported a reduction of the water drainage due to an increase of the evapotranspiration by plant cover transpiration. However, there is no real consensus on the intensity of this phenomenon, which highlights the importance to quantify the impact of cover crops on drainage compared to that of bare soil. We performed a meta-analysis of published papers presenting studies on the impact of cover crops on drainage compared to that of bare soil under temperate climates. Of the 436 papers identified, 28 of them were included in the analysis based on criteria required for performing a relevant meta-analysis. The originality of our study lies in two following results: (1) the quantification of drainage reduction with cover crops by a mean effect size of 27 mm compared to that of bare soil and (2) within the large variability of soils, climates, and cropping systems, no main determining factor was found significant to explain the variability of water drainage reduction. The cover crops provide a service of nitrate pollution mitigation, but the drainage reduction could be considered as a disservice, because they can lead to a reduction in groundwater recharge due to a higher evapotranspiration in comparison to bare soil. This highlights the need of research for optimizing trade-offs between services and disservices of cover crops for water balance.

Growing mixtures of annual arable crop species or genotypes is a promising way to improve crop production without increasing agricultural inputs. To design optimal crop mixtures, choices of species, genotypes, sowing proportion, plant arrangement, and sowing date need to be made but field experiments alone are not sufficient to explore such a large range of factors. Crop modeling allows to study, understand and ultimately design cropping systems and is an established method for sole crops. Recently, modeling started to be applied to annual crop mixtures as well. Here, we review to what extent crop simulation models and individual-based models are suitable to capture and predict the specificities of annual crop mixtures. We argued that: 1) The crop mixture spatio-temporal heterogeneity (influencing the occurrence of ecological processes) determines the choice of the modeling approach (plant or crop centered). 2) Only few crop models (adapted from sole crop models) and individual-based models currently exist to simulate annual crop mixtures. 3) Crop models are mainly used to address issues related to crop mixtures management and to the integration of crop mixtures into larger scales such as the rotation, whereas individual-based models are mainly used to identify plant traits involved in crop mixture performance and to quantify the relative contribution of the different ecological processes (niche complementarity, facilitation, competition, plasticity) to crop mixture functioning. This review highlights that modeling of annual crop mixtures is in its infancy and gives to model users some important keys to choose the model based on the questions they want to answer, with awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of each of the modeling approaches., Comment: 42 pages, 5 figures

International audience; Service crops are crops grown with the aim of providing non-marketed ecosystem services, i.e. differing from food, fiber and fuel production. Vineyard soils face various agronomic issues such as poor organic carbon levels, erosion, fertility losses, and numerous studies have highlighted the ability of service crops to address these issues. In addition to their ability to increase soil organic matter and fertility, and reduce runoff and erosion processes, service crops provide a large variety of ecosystem services in vineyards such as weed control, pest and disease regulation, water supply, water purification, improvement of field trafficability and maintenance of soil biodiversity. However, associating service crops with grapevines may also generate disservices and impair grape production: competition for soil resources with the grapevine is often highlighted to reject such association. Consequently, vinegrowers have to find a balance between services and disservices, depending on local soil and climate conditions, on their objectives of grape production and on the nature and temporality of the ecosystem services they expect during the grapevine cycle. This study proposes a review of the services and disservices provided by service crops in vineyards, and a framework for their management. Vinegrowers' production objectives and pedoclimatic constraints form the preliminary stage to consider before defining a strategy of service crop management. This strategy assembles management options such as the choice of species, its spatial distribution within the vineyard, the timing of its installation, maintenance and destruction. These management options, defined for both annual and long-term time scales, form action levers which may impact cropping system functioning. Finally, we underline the importance of implementing an adaptive strategy at the seasonal time scale. Such tactical management allows adapting the cropping system to observed climate and state of the biophysical system during the grapevine cycle, in order to provide targeted services and achieve satisfactory production objectives.

Background and aims The use of summer cover crops (SCCs) as residue inputs in agricultural systems can lead to a potential environmental trade-off between the amount C and N retained and the emission of N as the potent greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O). Our objectives were to relate N2O fluxes to the quality of SCCs residues and to select SCCs species with high C and N addition and low N2O emissions.Methods We measured SCC biomass production and N2O fluxes after SCCs termination - velvet bean, pearl millet, dwarf pigeonpea, sunn hemp, showy rattlebox and jack bean - under subtropical no-till conditions.Results The N2O fluxes in the first 30 days after SCCs termination corresponded to 65% of cumulative N2O emissions measured during 165 days in 2010 and 150 days in 2011. The cumulative N2O emissions varied from 0.46 to 1.38 kg N ha(-1) and were not proportional to aboveground biomass N addition. Cumulative N2O emissions were positively correlated to water-soluble C and N and the N content of crop residues and negatively correlated to cellulose and hemicellulose content. The N2O emission factor values varied from 0.24 to 0.64% and did not differ among SCCs.Conclusions Sunn hemp and dwarf pigeonpea are the most suitable species for inclusion in crop systems because they combined high C and N input and low N2O emissions.

Thus, it is crucial to better quantify, understand and predict the emergence date of a variety of cover crops from multiple contexts in impact assessment studies. The objectives of this study were to 1) analyze variability in emergence dynamics among cover crops grown in fields, 2) identify variables that influence emergence the most and use them to develop a simple model to predict emergence date and 3) calibrate the STICS model to improve its predictions of cover crop emergence. STICS was chosen because it is a dynamic soil-plant model widely validated in the literature for simulating the production of cover crop services. We analyzed emergence dynamics of ten cover crop species sown under a variety of soil, climate and sowing conditions from 18 experimental sites across France. We developed and independently evaluated a static model based on these data to predict the number of days until emergence. We then calibrated STICS using the same data. Results revealed a mean emergence duration of 12 days for all species, but with high variability among experimental sites and years. The simple static model contained only three variables, with the number of consecutive days without significant water input after sowing the most significant. Overall, both the model and STICS predicted emergence date well in the calibration and validation datasets. Accurate prediction of soil moisture in the seedbed and soil water balance is a key factor to accurately predict cover crop emergence. Accurately predicting emergence of cover crops in crop models will help to assess the former’s ability to provide ecosystem services in cropping systems in current and future climates.

International audience; Cover crops provide ecosystem services such as storing atmospheric carbon in soils after incorporation of their residues. Cover crops also influence soil water balance, which can be an issue in temperate climates with dry summers as for example in southern France and Europe. As a consequence, it is necessary to understand cover crops’ long-term influence on greenhouse gases (GHG) and water balances to assess their potential to mitigate climate change in arable cropping systems. We used the previously calibrated and validated soil-crop model STICS to simulate scenarios of cover crop introduction to assess their influence on rainfed and irrigated cropping systems and crop rotations distributed among five contrasted sites in southern France from 2007-2052. Our results showed that cover crops can improve mean direct GHG balance by 315 kg CO2e ha-1 yr-1 in the long term compared to that of bare soil. This was due mainly to an increase in carbon storage in the soil despite a slight increase in N2O emissions which can be compensate by adapting fertilization. Cover crops also influence the water balance by reducing mean annual drainage by 20 mm yr-1 but increasing mean annual evapotranspiration by 20 mm yr-1 compared to those of bare soil. Using cover crops to improve the GHG balance may help to mitigate climate change by decreasing CO2e emitted in cropping systems which can represent a decrease from 4.5 to 9% of annual GHG emissions of the French agriculture and forestry sector. However, if not well managed, they also could create water management issues in watersheds with shallow groundwater. Relationships between cover crop biomass and its influence on several variables such as drainage, carbon sequestration and GHG emissions could be used to extend our results to other conditions to assess the cover crops influence in a wider range of areas.

Intercropping banana crop with a grass cover controlled by mowing is a possible alternative to chemical weed control. However, before adopting this biological way to control weeds, it is crucial to study the impact of the cover crop on banana productivity. In a field experiment, we studied the impact on the banana (Musa spp., cv Cavendish) growth and yield of two grass covers, Cynodon dactylon (Cyn) and Brachiaria decumbens (Bra), managed by mowing every two months, in comparison to conventional weed chemical control (control). The experiment was conducted during two banana cycles. Two months after banana plantating, Bra produced more biomass than Cyn (0.94 kg DM m-2 vs 0.53 kg DM m-2); afterwards both biomass productions became equivalent (0.24 kg DM m-2) when the banana plants shaded the grass. Results showed that these cover crops have impeded the banana growth and development during the first cycle: in comparison to the control, the flowering date was delayed in both cover treatments and the number of fruits per bunch was reduced in the Cyn cover treatment. During the second cycle, as a consequence of the delayed flowering date at the first cycle, banana development was also delayed on Cyn and Bra treatments. However, the presence of Cyn and Bra cover crops had no influence on the size and weight of the banana plants at flowering date, nor on the final crop productivity. These results were interpreted as a result of contrasted conditions of competition for nutrient during the two cycles: an important production of biomass and nutrient demand of the two cover crops during the first cycle, impacting the banana growth and delaying the flowering date and, during the second cycle, a lower biomass production of the both covers crops shaded by the banana canopy and a contribution to the nutrient supply provided by the decomposition of the mowed residues.

Until the last decade, pest management in a pineapple crop was efficiently done using pesticides. However, most of the pesticides are now banned for use in European overseas territories. An alternative is to establish a rotation, or rotations, between pineapple and plants that limit the development of these parasites. We tested 32 plants (mainly Fabaceae and Poaceae) for their potential to decrease the soil inoculum of the nematode Rotylenchulus reniformis and of the symphylid Hanseniella sp., the two main parasites affecting the growth and the production of pineapple crops in Martinique. Several field, greenhouse and climatic chamber experiments showed that among the cover plants tested Crotalaria juncea and C. spectabilis showed a strong suppressiveness for both parasites.

Cover crops introduced into cropping systems can lead to chemical input reductions and pollution mitigation because they enhance ecological functions. The choice of the best cover crops for a specific cropping system is, however, difficult because of the large range of potential cover species. A promising method involves functional traits as simplified indicators of plant functions. In banana cropping systems, cover crops are used especially to control weeds by development of their leaf area to boost competition for light. The aim of this study was to seek trait-based leaf area development strategies among tropical cover species, based on four plant traits chosen because of their mathematical link with leaf area development: specific leaf area (SLA), aboveground leaf mass fraction (LMFa), seed mass (SM) and aboveground relative growth rate (RGRa). We measured trait values and leaf areas of 17 tropical cover species grown for 1 month in a growth chamber. Strong positive and negative covariations were observed between SM, LMFa and RGRa, revealing a “syndrome” of traits and suggesting trade-offs between traits. Four groups of species were identified based on PCA and cluster analyses and were characterized by significantly different sets of trait values. They showed four leaf area development strategies: species that allocate a large part of biomass to leaf area (G1), species that develop large biomass and leaf area at emergence (G2), species with rapid biomass growth and low biomass investment in leaves (G3) and species with a non-specialized strategy (G4). After 1 month, species of groups G1 and G2 had higher leaf area, although not significantly, than species of groups G3 and G4. Comparisons between this functional classification and the taxonomic monocot/dicot classification showed that the functional classification captured a larger part of the variability in traits involved in leaf area development than the taxonomic monocot/dicot classification. This encourages the use of such a classification to describe plant functioning, to understand plant roles in plant–plant interactions and guide the choice of the best cover species to introduce into cropping systems.

The noctuid Helicoverpa armigera is one of the key cotton pests in the Old World. One possible pest regulation method may be the management of host crop in the landscapes. For polyphagous pests such as H. armigera, crop diversity and rotations can offer sequential and alternate resources that may enhance abundance. We explore the impact of landscape composition and host crop diversity on the abundance and natal host plant use of H. armigera in northern Benin.Host plant diversity at the largest scale examined (500 m diameter) was positively correlated with H. armigera abundance. Host plant diversity and the cover of tomato crops were the most important variables in relation to high abundance of H. armigera. Host plant (cotton, maize, tomato, sorghum) proportions and C3 versus C4 plants did not consistently correlate positively with H. armigera abundance. Moth proportion derived from cotton-fed larvae was low, 15% in 2011 and 11% in 2012, and not significantly related to H. armigera abundance.Cotton crop cover was not significantly related to H. armigera abundance and may be considered as a sink crop. Landscape composition and sequential availability of host plants should be considered as keys factors for further studies on H. armigera regulation. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry.

Cover crops are increasingly being used in agriculture, primarily for weed or erosion management. The addition of cover crops increases the primary productivity of the system and diversifies basal resources for higher trophic levels. How increases in the quality and quantity of basal resources affect bottom-up and top-down control remains a key question in soil food web ecology. We evaluated the response of the nematode community to the introduction of cover crops between rows of a banana plantation. We measured changes in nematode food web structure and inferred the prevalence of bottom-up and top-down effects on the abundance of phytophagous nematodes (i.e., plant-feeding and root-hair-feeding species) 1.5 years after plots with cover crops (Poaceae or Fabaceae species) or bare soil were established. The addition of a cover crop greatly affected the structure and the abundance of the soil nematode community 1.5 years after planting. The abundance of all trophic groups except for plant-feeding nematodes tended to increase with the addition of cover crops. The Shannon Weaver diversity index and the enrichment index increased with the addition of cover crops, indicating that opportunistic, bacterivorous and fungivorous nematodes benefited from the added resources. Plant-feeding nematodes were least abundant in plots with Poaceae cover crops, while bacterivorous, omnivorous, and root-hair-feeding nematodes were more abundant with Fabaceae cover crops than with bare soil, indicating that cover crop identity or quality greatly affected soil food web structure. Bottom-up effects on all trophic groups other than plant-feeding nematodes were evident with Poaceae cover crops, suggesting an top-down control of plant-feeding nematodes by omnivorous nematodes. Conversely, plant-feeding nematodes were evidently not suppressed in Fabaceae cover crops, perhaps because bottom-up effects on omnivorous nematodes were weaker (hence, top-down control by omnivorous nematodes was weaker), and because Fabaceae cover crops probably served as good hosts for some plant-feeding nematodes.

Plant-parasitic nematodes cause significant yield losses to sugarcane crops in South Africa. The currently available chemicals for nematode control are both expensive and potentially detrimental to the environment. Various alternative crops have been reported to reduce the numbers of plant-parasitic nematodes. Mindful of this, we evaluated 27 cover crops in pot trials to assess their host status to important plant-parasitic nematodes of sugarcane. All of the crops tested in pots hosted significantly lower numbers of Pratylenchus than did sugarcane. Crops such as cowpeas, tomato and grazing vetch were good hosts for Meloidogyne and would not be good choices as part of a sugarcane rotation system in heavily-infested soils. Conversely, crops such as oats, wheat, forage peanuts and marigolds reduced numbers of Meloidogyne. Velvet beans increased the abundance of Helicotylenchus, a beneficial nematode genus. A field trial was also conducted to study the effect of different cover cropping sequences. Our results show that changes in nematode communities occurred within three months of growing these crops and often remained low for the duration (the remaining 15 months) of the crops' growth. Nematodes such as Pratylenchus and Tylenchorhynchus were significantly lowered and remained so for the duration of the trial.

Low crop yields in the semi arid areas of Kenya have been attributed to, among other factors, low soil fertility, low farm inputs, labour constraints and inappropriate tillage practices that lead to pulverized soils. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of legume cover crops (LCC) on soil properties and maize growth in the semi arid area of Machakos District, Kenya. The study was undertaken in farmers' fields. The field experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design with four treatments each replicated four times during the 2008/2009 long (LR) and short rain (SR) seasons. The treatments were T1 = maize + dolichos (Lablab purpureus) + subsoiling; T2 = maize + dolichos + no subsoiling; T3 = maize alone + no subsoiling; T4 = maize alone with subsoiling). Results from the field experiments showed that rainfall amount and its distribution affected the growth and yield of dolichos and maize. There were significant differences in ground cover between the treatments at P ? 0.05 in all the different weeks after planting when measurements were taken. The penetration resistance in all the plots ranged from 3.83 - 4.18 kg cm-2 with treatment T4 having the highest and treatment T1 lowest penetration resistance. There were also siginificant changes in soil N in plots which were under dolichos compared to plots without dolichos. The results obtained in this study also indicated that subsoiling in combination with dolichos had the greatest potential of improving soil properties and crop yields in semi arid environments of Kenya.

Cover plant-based cropping systems have gained considerable attention over the last few years because of the recognized benefits of increasing the diversity of agrosystems to sustain services other than those pertaining to production. While agronomical tools and methods to assess these services in multispecies plant communities barely exist, trait-based approaches, originally developed in the field of comparative functional ecology, provide an appropriated framework to study the effects of plant diversity on agrosystems. The aim of this article is to discuss how a trait-based approach can be used to assess the services delivered in cover plant-based cropping system. We focus on semiperennial cropping systems based on cover plants, exemplified by the banana cropping systems. These systems are described in a first section to identify the services targeted. A second section, based on a literature survey, analyzes the processes associated with each service and identifies related effect traits of cover plants. A shortlist of markers to be used to assess agrosystem processes is proposed and hypothesis on trade-offs and synergies among services are formulated. In a third section, issues related to the scaling-up from plant traits to the services delivered by plant agricultural communities are discussed. Such an approach, originated in the field of ecology, appears highly promising to tackle agronomic issues and its application to agrosystems constitutes a challenging test of their genericity. It raises specific questions and stresses the need for new methodological developments, which could be part of a research agenda at the interface between the two disciplines.

Evaluating cropping systems depends on the perspective and scale considered. An agronomic point of view is often considered with the assessment of the impacts of the cropping system at the field scale, or an economic point of view with the consequences of implementing a cropping system on the farm. Tools have been developed to enable a more integrative assessment of cropping systems. This is the case of the MASC (R) model which, using multicriteria evaluation, estimates the sustainability of cropping systems from environmental, economic and social perspectives. MASC-Mada was developed specifically for upland cropping systems in Madagascar. It has been used to compare conservation agriculture cropping systems with conventional cropping systems. The results, confronted to the opinion of farmers, show that conservation agriculture systems are generally more sustainable than conventional systems but a mixed system combining the use of cover crops and less frequent tillage would better take social and economic aspects into account., L’évaluation des systèmes de culture de´pend du point de vue et de l’échelle envisagés. Un point de vue agronomique est souvent adopté avec l’évaluation des impacts de différents systèmes à l’échelle de la parcelle, ou un point de vue économique avec les conséquences d’un système de culture sur le fonctionnement de l’exploitation agricole. Des outils ont néanmoins été développés pour permettre une évaluation plus intégrative des systèmes de culture. C’est le cas du modèle MASC1 qui permet, par une approche multicritère, d’évaluer la durabilité des systèmes de culture à la fois d’un point de vue environnemental, économique et social. MASC-Mada, développe pour les systèmes de culture pluviaux à Madagascar, a été utilisé pour comparer des systèmes en agriculture de conservation avec des systèmes conventionnels. Les résultats des évaluations, confrontés aux points de vue des agriculteurs, révèlent que les systèmes en agriculture de conservation sont globalement plus durables que les systèmes traditionnels, mais qu’un système mixte alliant utilisation de plantes de couverture et des labours moins fréquents prendrait mieux en compte les aspects sociaux et économiques.

Suppression of plant-parasitic nematodes and decomposition of organic matter are important soil food web functions. The availability and nature of carbon substrates in soil drive the structure, dynamics, and activities of soil food webs and may alter the way they function in the ecosystem. In this study, we assessed the effects on nematode communities of incorporating litter from three cover crops with contrasting biochemical characteristics into soil taken from a banana field. The litter type influenced nematode taxa and functional guilds during the 90-day assay. The cellulose- and hemicellulose-rich litters of Crotalaria zanzibarica and Paspalum notatum induced similar nematode successions, causing bacterivorous and fungivorous nematode populations to increase early in the study period and promoting a fungal decomposition pathway at the end of the trial. These two litters were the most effective at decreasing the soil’s nematode infective potential with regard to major banana plant-parasitic nematodes, such as Pratylenchus coffeae , Helicotylenchus multicinctus , and Rotylenchulus reniformis . C. zanzibarica showed good potential as a green manure plant, as it increased the soil mineral nitrogen content during the 45 days following incorporation of litter. By contrast, litter from Acacia auriculiformis , which had high lignin content, induced immobilization of soil nitrogen and did not significantly increase microbivorous nematodes before day 45. This treatment failed to reduce the soil’s nematode infective potential for H. multicinctus and R. reniformis populations. Our study also showed that the dynamics of nitrogen mineralisation in soil were related to the C:N ratio of litters but not to the decomposition pathway. The biochemical characteristics of litters appear to be critical drivers of nematode ecological successions and decomposition pathways following plant litter amendments to soil taken from a banana field.

L'introduction de biodiversité végétale dans les agroécosystèmes peut modifier la structure des réseaux trophiques du sol et les fonctions écosystémiques qu'ils assurent. Cette thèse fixe les bases d'une démarche expérimentale pour sélectionner des espèces végétales à partir de différents traits fonctionnels et pour évaluer leurs effets sur les réseaux trophiques et le fonctionnement des sols. Nous avons plus particulièrement cherché à sélectionner des plantes de services pouvant induire la régulation des nématodes parasites du bananier Radopholus similis et Pratylenchus coffeae et favoriser la décomposition des matières organiques durant l'interculture dans les bananeraies antillaises. C'est à dire durant la période séparant la destruction d'une ancienne bananeraie et la replantation d'une nouvelle. Au cours de ce travail, les réseaux trophiques du sol ont été appréhendés par une analyse fonctionnelle des communautés de nématodes. Une étude Bibliographique nous a permis de montrer que les traits fonctionnels "statut d'hôtes" vis-à-vis des nématodes phytoparasites, "composition biochimique des litières" et "productivité primaire des espèces végétales" contribuent aux effets des plantes sur les réseaux trophiques du sol et sur les deux services écosystémiques étudiés. Nous avons donc effectué une typologie des plantes de services à partir de ces traits. Puis pour étudier les effets d'apports de litières de composition biochimique contrastée sur les communautés de nématodes du sol, nous avons sélectionné les espèces végétales Paspalum notatum, Crotalaria zanzibarica et Acacia auriculiformis dont les litières présentaient des teneurs variables en hémicellulose, cellulose, azote, et lignine. Une étude en microcosmes a montré que la composition biochimique des litières détermine les successions écologiques au sein des communautés de nématodes et stimule de manière contrastée les voies de décomposition de la matière organique dans les sols. Nous avons discuté des mécanismes de régulation des nématodes parasites du bananier induits par ces apports de litières. Nous avons également montré que la culture de ces trois espèces induit une diminution des populations de R. similis dans les sols. Enfin, nous avons évalué les effets au champ de couverts de P. notatum, de C. zanzibarica et d'un couvert associant ces deux espèces. Pour cela, nous avons cultivé ces couverts durant neuf mois avant de les détruire et de restituer leurs litières à la surface des sols. Nos résultats montrent que ces couverts végétaux influencent différemment l'abondance en nématodes phytoparasites et le potentiel infectieux du sol. Ils induisent également des régulations bottom-up et top down dans leurs communautés. Après la restitution des litières, nous avons observé de fortes abondances de nématodes liées à la décomposition des litières dans la couche de surface du sol. Celle-ci fournit les couches sous-jacentes du sol en azote minéral et favorise le développement des nématodes omnivores et prédateurs. Il en résulte la formation de communautés de nématodes structurées et diversifiées concomitantes à la réduction des populations de R. similis et P. coffeae. Ces résultats étaient plus marqués pour les couverts monospécifiques de C. zanzibarica et les couverts mixtes. Nos travaux confirment que les traits fonctionnels "statut d'hôte", "production primaire", "composition biochimique des litières" sont déterminant pour sélectionner des plantes de services pour l'interculture en bananeraies.

Au sud du Brésil, une longue trajectoire de recherche et de développement a donné lieu à une large utilisation de systèmes de culture en semis direct par les agriculteurs, y compris en agriculture familiale, ce qui n'est pas commun au niveau international. Deux enquêtes menées en 2004 et 2013 auprès des exploitations familiales de la région d'Irati (Parana, Brésil) montrent jusqu'à quel point elles ont adopté ces systèmes et leurs trois principes de base. Si l'utilisation du semoir à semis direct s'est généralisée, les rotations et les plantes de couverture sont moins diversifiées que celles promues par la recherche. Les rotations se sont simplifiées et les plantes de couverture ont surtout été utilisées pour produire du fourrage pour les troupeaux laitiers, activité en fort développement. Par ailleurs, la plupart des agriculteurs ont recours périodiquement au labour pour gérer divers problèmes agronomiques auxquels ils font face. Les agriculteurs familiaux ont donc adapté dynamiquement, plutôt qu'adopté le modèle de semis direct proposé par la recherche, à leurs objectifs, ressources et contraintes spécifiques, en tenant compte des conditions très variables dans lesquelles ils opèrent. Ce faisant, ils répondent plus aux facteurs et aux conditions économiques de court terme (prix de vente, rentabilité) ou opérationnels (disponibilité de semences de couverture et fourragères, facilité d'intervention) qu'à l'optimisation des performances agronomiques et à l'amélioration de la fertilité du sol à long terme, mises en avant par la recherche. Mieux répondre à la diversité des contraintes, besoins et objectifs des agriculteurs familiaux implique que la recherche soit capable et désireuse de mettre en oeuvre, à l'avenir, des démarches de co-conception de systèmes de culture et de production innovants en partenariat avec eux et avec les autres acteurs clés du développement agricole.

The degradation of the Andean cloud forest raises strong biological conservation issues and threatens the sustainability of a crucial water resource. The idea that nurse-based restoration can accelerate the recovery of these forests is underexplored, despite its promise as a restoration technique. Recent conceptual models predict that facilitation among plants may be an important mechanism, but there is a lack of strong empirical support. We gathered experimental data to test this prediction and explore the relevance of using nurse-based forest restoration in these environments. A 20-month factorial experimental design in the Andean tropical cloud forest was established. We measured the survival and estimated the biomass production of transplanted seedlings of a keystone canopy forest species, Ceroxylon echinulatum (Arecaceae), in a deforested area in the presence/absence of herbivory, a potential nurse plant (the tussock grass Setaria sphacelata, Poaceae) and artificial shade. The joint effects of deforestation and herbivory led to the death of all seedlings, whereas most seedlings survived in the adjacent forest, which was used as the control. The presence of nurse plants led to significantly higher survival and growth of Ceroxylon seedlings throughout the experiment, regardless of herbivore presence. The nurse effects were explained by a reduction of the relative abiotic stress experienced by the seedlings outside the forest, that is, the consistently decreasing maximum vapour pressure deficit. Furthermore, nurse tussocks delayed and reduced the effects of herbivory by offering physical protection and a refuge for seedlings against detection by herbivores. However, the effects of herbivory and abiotic stress on facilitation were not additive. Synthesis and applications. Facilitation in degraded cloud forest can be intense as soon as the beneficiary plants are driven away from their physiological optimum (relative abiotic stress) and/or are confronted by herbivory. Using pre-established exotic tussock grasses as a nurse-based restoration technique in degraded cloud forest is a low-cost, non-detrimental (to biodiversity) option, especially in the absence of nurse trees and shrubs. The success of this method requires transplanting seedlings at the base of tussocks. However, the changes in the specific composition of predator diet induced by cover cropping are poorly understood. Here, we hypothesized that the cover crop can significantly alter the diet of predators in agroecosystems. The cover crop Brachiaria decumbens is increasingly used in banana plantations to control weeds and improve physical soil properties. In this paper, we used a DNA metabarcoding approach for the molecular analysis of the gut contents of predators (based on mini-COI) to identify 1) the DNA sequences of their prey, 2) the predators of Cosmopolites sordidus (a major pest of banana crops), and 3) the difference in the specific composition of predator diets between a bare soil plot (BSP) and a cover cropped plot (CCP) in a banana plantation. The earwig Euborellia caraibea, the carpenter ant Camponotus sexguttatus, and the fire ant Solenopsis geminata were found to contain C. sordidus DNA at frequencies ranging from 1 to 7%. While the frequencies of predators positive for C. sordidus DNA did not significantly differ between BSP and CCP, the frequency at which E. caraibea was positive for Diptera was 26% in BSP and 80% in CCP; the frequency at which C. sexguttatus was positive for Jalysus spinosus was 14% in BSP and 0% in CCP; and the frequency at which S. geminata was positive for Polytus mellerborgi was 21% in BSP and 3% in CCP. E. caraibea, C. sexguttatus and S. geminata were identified as possible biological agents for the regulation of C. sordidus. The detection of the diet changes of these predators when a cover crop is planted indicates the possible negative effects on pest regulation if predators switch to forage on alternative prey.
