The Iranian Journal of Plant Physiology https://ijpp.saveh.iau.ir/ is a reputable journal that publishes original research articles, reviews, and short communications related to plant physiology and biochemistry. As of my knowledge cutoff date of September 2021, the journal was indexed in Scopus and had a Q3 ranking. One advantage of this journal for non-Iranian authors is that it offers free publication for them, which can be beneficial for researchers who may otherwise face financial barriers to publishing their work. Additionally, the journal has a relatively quick initial decision time, with authors typically receiving a decision within a few days of submission. However, the review process may take up to 4 weeks, which is a standard timeline for many journals. Overall, the Iranian Journal of Plant Physiology can be a good option for researchers in the field of plant physiology and biochemistry, particularly for those who are looking for a journal with a relatively quick decision time and no publication fees for non-Iranian authors.

Landraces from arid areas can provide favorable alleles for stay green under stress. The objectives of this study were to estimate varietal and heterosis effects of Algerian Saharan populations and their crosses for stay-green under water stress and no-nitrogen fertilization and to identify the most promising populations as sources of stay-green under stress. Six Algerian maize populations were evaluated in a diallel under water stress (300 mm irrigation) versus control (600 mm) and no-nitrogen fertilization versus 120 kg/ha N fertilization. Both varietal and specific heterosis were involved in delayed senescence under stress. Breeding programs could capitalize additive components by using the populations IZM or IGS with favorable varietal effects for delayed senescence under nitrogen stress, or dominance effects by using the population AOR with favorable heterotic effects for plant color under water and nitrogen stresses. Based on specific heterosis, under water stress conditions with no-nitrogen supply, the most promising cross was AOR × IZM for delayed senescence, while IZM × BAH (with no-nitrogen supply), and SHH × BAH (with nitrogen fertilizer), will allow a longer maintenance of the plant coloration. In many crops, including grapevine, the distribution of reflecting dust on foliage is a practice potentially leading to the mitigation of environmental stresses such as excessive light and limited water supply. This study aimed to evaluate whether the presence of dust on the leaves may affect PSII photochemical efficiency and gas-exchange measurements, thus leading to biased results. The study was conducted in a winery located at Benevento (Italy) on Vitis vinifera L. subsp. vinifera ‘Falanghina’ where the application of basalt dust was tested on the canopy to alleviate the effects of water stress. The results showed that there is no difference in PSII photochemistry or gas-exchange parameters measured in the presence of dust or after cleaning the leaves. Therefore, we conclude there is no need to remove dust from leaves before performing the ecophysiological investigations, thus fastening and simplifying the data collection.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of water availability and nitrogen fertilization on plant growth, nutrient dynamics, and variables related to soybean crop yield. Trials were performed in Teresina, Piauí, Brazil, using randomized blocks in a split-split plot arrangement. The plots corresponded to water regimes (full and deficient), the split plots to N fertilization (0 and 1000 kg ha−1 N-urea), and the split-split plots to harvest times of soybean plants (16, 23, 30, 37, 44, 58, 65, 79 and 86 days after emergence), with three replicates. In general, the accumulation and partitioning of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn) and boron (B) were decreased in plants subjected to water deficit and without N fertilization. Although nitrogen fertilization promoted elevated N accumulation in tissues, it did not result in any significant yield gain, and the highest seed yields were found in plants under full irrigation, regardless of N supplementation. However, deficient irrigation decreased the seed oil content of N-fertilized plants. In conclusion, N fertilization is critical for nutrient homeostasis, and water availability impairs biomass and nutrient accumulation, thereby limiting soybean yield performance.

15 páginas.- 7 figuras.- referencias, The relative contribution of carbon sources generated from leaves and fruits photosynthesis for triacylglycerol biosynthesis in the olive mesocarp and their interaction with water stress was investigated. With this aim, altered carbon source treatments were combined with different irrigation conditions. A higher decrease in mesocarp oil content was observed in fruits under girdled and defoliated shoot treatment compared to darkened fruit conditions, indicating that both leaf and fruit photosynthesis participate in carbon supply for oil biosynthesis being leaves the main source. The carbon supply and water status affected oil synthesis in the mesocarp, regulating the expression of DGAT and PDAT genes and implicating DGAT1-1, DGAT2, PDAT1-1, and PDAT1-2 as the principal genes responsible for triacylglycerol biosynthesis. A major role was indicated for DGAT2 and PDAT1-2 in well-watered conditions. Moreover, polyunsaturated fatty acid content together with FAD2-1, FAD2-2 and FAD7-1 expression levels were augmented in response to modified carbon supply in the olive mesocarp. Furthermore, water stress caused an increase in DGAT1-1, DGAT1-2, PDAT1-1, and FAD2-5 gene transcript levels. Pressure chamber measurements of psi(leaf) (psi(leafPC)) are most typical, yet, the practical complexity of the technique and of the underlying theory has led to ambiguous understanding of the conditions to optimize measurements. Consequently, specific techniques and precautions diversified across the global research community, raising questions of reliability and repeatability. Here, we surveyed specific methods of psi(leafPC) from multiple laboratories, and synthesized experiments testing common assumptions and practices in psi(leafPC) for diverse species: (i) the need for equilibration of previously transpiring leaves; (ii) leaf storage before measurement; (iii) the equilibration of psi(leaf) for leaves on bagged branches of a range of dehydration; (iv) the equilibration of psi(leaf) across the lamina for bagged leaves, and the accuracy of measuring leaves with artificially 'elongated petioles'; (v) the need in psi(leaf) measurements for bagging leaves and high humidity within the chamber; (vi) the need to avoid liquid water on leaf surfaces; (vii) the use of 'pulse' pressurization versus gradual pressurization; and (viii) variation among experimenters in psi(leafPC) determination. Pelargonium nurseries in Europe encounter rooting problems due to the low quality of the cuttings supplied during the winter. The problem may be due to the poor quality of the stock plants from which the cuttings are harvested. The main problem that growers have is the prolonged shipping period and its effect on the viability and rootability of the cuttings once they arrive in Europe. We tested the effect of water stressing the stock plants grown grown in random block design in a commercial nursery and checked the rootability of cuttings after storage and the susceptibility of cuttings to rot. We assumed that mild water stress could harden the stock plant and thus the cuttings, and they would survive the journey better. Mild water stress improved the rooting ability of some Pelargonium varieties after days of storage compared to unstressed plants. Cuttings from water-stressed stock plants showed less decay after prolonged storage than unstressed stock plants as measured by percent rotten cutting. Chlorophyll content increased significantly in cuttings from stressed stock plants. The yield and physical parameters of the cuttings from stressed and nonstressed stock plants did not change. Results indicate that applying water stress to stock plants improves the quality of Pelargonium cuttings. Resumo Os viveiros de Pelargonium na Europa enfrentam problemas de enraizamento devido à baixa qualidade das estacas fornecidas durante o inverno. O problema se deve provavelmente à baixa qualidade das plantas matrizes das quais as estacas são colhidas. Concomitantimente, o principal problema que os produtores enfrentam é o período prolongado de envio e seu efeito na viabilidade e enraizamento das mudas quando chegam à Europa. Foi testado o efeito do estresse hídrico nas plantas matrizes cultivadas em blocos aleatórios em um viveiro comercial e verificado o enraizamento das estacas após o armazenamento e a suscetibilidade das estacas ao apodrecimento. A hipótese do trabalho foi que o estresse hídrico moderado poderia enrijecer a planta matriz e, portanto, as estacas sobreviveriam melhor ao transporte. Um baixo estresse hídrico levou a melhora na capacidade de enraizamento de algumas variedades de Pelargonium, após dias de armazenamento, em comparação com plantas não sujeitas ao estresse. As estacas de plantas matrizes sujeitas ao estresse hídrico mostraram menor decomposição após armazenamento prolongado em comparação com plantas não sujeitas ao estresse, conforme medido pela porcentagem de cortes podres. O teor de clorofila aumentou significativamente em estacas de plantas matrizes sob estresse hídrico. Não foi observada diferença na produtividade e parâmetros físicos das estacas de plantas matrizes sujeitas e não sujeitas a estressadas estresse hídrico. Os resultados indicam que o estresse hídrico em plantas matrizes melhora a qualidade das estacas de Pelargonium.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a medicinal species used in several areas, such as food, medicines and cosmetics, and the understanding of its physiological behavior under environmental conditions is of paramount importance for the improvement of cultivation methods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different water availability under physiological, biochemical and metabolic characteristics, in three distinct genotypes: 'Alfavaca basilicão', 'Gennaro de menta' and 'Grecco à palla', during two different phenological stages (vegetative and reproductive). It was found that the water deficit promotes physiological changes to tolerate water stress, and the studied genotypes have different routes to achieve this physiological tolerance, which culminates in a distinct accumulation of metabolites in plants, and can be considered interesting if the final product is the production of essential oils.

The growth and quality of medicinal plants are greatly affected by environmental stress, with over half of the world’s agricultural land facing water shortages. This research was conducted over two seasons in 2018 and 2019 and aimed to investigate the influence of varying irrigation intervals and partial replacement of mineral fertilizers with biofertilizer (yeast) on the growth, yield, and essential oil content of lemongrass. The study also looked at the effect of the partial substitution of NPK fertilizer with yeast on lemongrass’s ability to withstand water deficit stress. The results showed that water deficit and reducing NPK levels led to a decline in growth characteristics and relative leaf greenness, which was accompanied by an increase in proline content and essential oil percentage. These findings suggest that lemongrass is sensitive to drought and requires adequate nitrogen fertilization. However, extending the irrigation intervals led to an improvement in essential oil content. To achieve high essential oil yield and maintain productivity while considering environmental factors, it is recommended to reduce mineral fertilizer to 50–75% NPK combined with biofertilizer, and space irrigation intervals every 10–15 days. Further research is needed to improve the growth of lemongrass in water-deficient conditions, particularly on newly reclaimed soils.

Grapevine rootstocks may supply water to the scion according to the transpiration demand, thus modulating plant responses to water deficit, but the scion variety can alter these responses, as well. The rootstock genotypes’ effect on the scion physiological response, aquaporin expression, and hormone concentrations in the xylem and the leaf was assessed under well watered (WW) and water stress (WS) conditions. Under WW, vines grafted onto 1103P and R110 rootstocks (the more vigorous and drought-tolerant) showed higher photosynthesis (AN), stomatal conductance (gs), and hydraulic conductance (Khplant) compared with the less vigorous and drought-sensitive rootstock (161-49C), while under WS, there were hardly any differences between vines depending on the rootstock grafted. Besides, stomatal traits were affected by drought, which was related to gs, but not by the rootstock. Under WS conditions, all VvPIP and VvTIP aquaporins were up-regulated in the vines grafted onto 1103P and down-regulated in the ones grafted onto 161-49C. The 1103P capability to tolerate drought was enhanced by the up-regulation of all VvPIP and VvTIP aquaporins, lower ABA synthesis, and higher ACC/ABA ratios in leaves during WS compared with 161-49C. It was concluded that, under WW conditions, transpiration and stomatal control were rootstock-dependent. However, under WS conditions, alterations in the molecular components of water transport and hormone concentration of the scion resulted in similar gas exchange values in the studied scions grafted onto different rootstocks.

Nursery cultivation practices can be modified to increase resistance to water stress in forest seedlings following field establishment, which may be increasingly important under climate change. We evaluated the morphological (survival, growth) and physiological (chlorophyll fluorescence, leaf water potential) responses to water stress for three ecologically diverse Quercus species (Q.robur, Q.pubescens, and Q.ilex) with varying traits resulting from the combination of growing media (peat, coir) and fertilization (standard, P-enriched, K-enriched). For all species under water stress, seedlings grown in coir had generally higher growth than those grown in peat. Seedlings fertilized with P performed better, particularly for survival; conversely, K fertilization resulted in inconsistent findings. Such results could be explained by a combination of factors. P fertilization resulted in higher P accumulation in seedlings, while no K accumulation was observed in K fertilized seedlings. As expected, the more drought-sensitive species, Q.robur, showed the worst response, while Q.pubescens had a drought resistance equal or better to Q.ilex despite being classified as intermediate in drought resistance in Mediterranean environments.

Isoprene-emitting plants are better protected against thermal and oxidative stresses, which is a desirable trait in a climate-changing (drier and warmer) world. Here we compared the ecophysiological performances of transgenic isoprene-emitting and wild-type non-emitting tobacco plants during water stress and after re-watering in actual environmental conditions (400 ppm of CO2 and 28 °C of average daily temperature) and in a future climate scenario (600 ppm of CO2 and 32 °C of average daily temperature). Furthermore, we intended to complement the present knowledge on the mechanisms involved in isoprene-induced resistance to water deficit stress by examining the proteome of transgenic isoprene-emitting and wild-type non-emitting tobacco plants during water stress and after re-watering in actual climate. Isoprene emitters maintained higher photosynthesis and electron transport rates under moderate stress in future climate conditions. However, physiological resistance to water stress in the isoprene-emitting plants was not as marked as expected in actual climate conditions, perhaps because the stress developed rapidly. In actual climate, isoprene emission capacity affected the tobacco proteomic profile, in particular by upregulating proteins associated with stress protection. Our results strengthen the hypothesis that isoprene biosynthesis is related to metabolic changes at the gene and protein levels involved in the activation of general stress defensive mechanisms of plants.

In the current climate change scenario, water stress is a serious threat to limit crop growth and yields. It is necessary to develop tolerant plants that cope with water stress and, for this purpose, tolerance mechanisms should be studied. NIBER® is a proven water stress- and salt-tolerant pepper hybrid rootstock (Gisbert-Mullor et al., 2020; López-Serrano et al., 2020), but tolerance mechanisms remain unclear. In this experiment, NIBER® and A10 (a sensitive pepper accession (Penella et al., 2014)) response to short-term water stress at 5 h and 24 h was studied in terms of gene expression and metabolites content in roots. GO terms and gene expression analyses evidenced constitutive differences in the transcriptomic profile of NIBER® and A10, associated with detoxification systems of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Upon water stress, transcription factors like DREBs and MYC are upregulated and the levels of auxins, abscisic acid and jasmonic acid are increased in NIBER®. NIBER® tolerance mechanisms involve an increase in osmoprotectant sugars (i.e., trehalose, raffinose) and in antioxidants (spermidine), but lower contents of oxidized glutathione compared to A10, which indicates less oxidative damage. Moreover, the gene expression for aquaporins and chaperones is enhanced. These results show the main NIBER® strategies to overcome water stress.

Phytohormones play an important role in regulating the plant behavior to drought. In previous studies, NIBER® pepper rootstock showed tolerance to drought in terms of production and fruit quality compared to ungrafted plants. In this study, our hypothesis was that short-term exposure to water stress in young, grafted pepper plants would shed light on tolerance to drought in terms of modulation of the hormonal balance. To validate this hypothesis, fresh weight, water use efficiency (WUE) and the main hormone classes were analyzed in self-grafted pepper plants (variety onto variety, V/V) and variety grafted onto NIBER® (V/N) at 4, 24, and 48h after severe water stress was induced by PEG addition. After 48h, WUE in V/N was higher than in V/V, due to major stomata closure to maintain water retention in the leaves. This can be explained by the higher abscisic acid (ABA) levels observed in the leaves of V/N plants. Despite the interaction between ABA and the ethylene precursor, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), in relation to stomata closure is controversial, we observed an important increase of ACC at the end of the experiment in V/N plants coinciding with an important rise of the WUE and ABA. The maximum concentration of jasmonic acid and salicylic acid after 48h was found in the leaves of V/N, associated with their role in abiotic stress signaling and tolerance. Respect to auxins and cytokinins, the highest concentrations were linked to water stress and NIBER®, but this effect did not occur for gibberellins. These results show that hormone balance was affected by water stress and rootstock genotype, where NIBER® rootstock displayed a better ability to overcome short-term water stress.

Drought is one of the major threats for crop plants among them rice, worldwide. The effects of drought vary depending on the plant growth phase and the occurrence of a previous stress, which can leave a memory of the stress. Stomata guard cells perform many essential functions and are highly responsive to hormonal and environmental stimuli. Therefore, information on how guard cells respond to drought might be useful for selecting drought tolerant plants. In this work, physiological analysis, comparative proteomics, gene expression and 5 - methylcytosine (%) analysis were used to elucidate the effects of drought in single stress event at vegetative or reproductive stage or recurrent at both stages in guard cells from rice plants. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance decreased when drought was applied at reproductive stage in single and recurrent event. Twelve drought-responsive proteins were identified, belonging to photosynthesis pathway, response to oxidative stress, stress signalling and others. The expression of their encoding genes showed a positive relation with the protein abundance. Drought stress increased the total DNA methylation when applied at vegetative stage in single (35%) and recurrent event (18%) and decreased it in plants stressed at reproductive stage (9.8%), with respect to the levels measured in well-watered ones (13.84%). In conclusion, a first drought event seems to induce adaptation to water-deficit conditions through decreasing energy dissipation, increasing ATP energy provision, reducing oxidative damage in GC. Furthermore, the stress memory is associated with epigenetic markers.

BackgroundPolygonatum kingianumColl. et Hemsl. is an important plant in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The extracts from its tubers are rich in polysaccharides and other metabolites such as saponins. It is a well-known concept that growing medicinal plants in semi-arid (or drought stress) increases their natural compounds concentrations. This study was conducted to explore the morpho-physiological responses ofP. kingianumplants and transcriptomic signatures ofP. kingianumtubers exposed to mild, moderate, and severe drought and rewatering.ResultsThe stress effects on the morpho-physiological parameters were dependent on the intensity of the drought stress. The leaf area, relative water content, chlorophyll content, and shoot fresh weight decreased whereas electrolyte leakage increased with increase in drought stress intensity. A total of 53,081 unigenes were obtained; 59% of which were annotated. We observed that 1352 and 350 core genes were differentially expressed in drought and rewatering, respectively. Drought stress driven differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, flavonoid biosynthesis, starch and sucrose metabolism, and stilbenoid diarylheptanoid and gingerol biosynthesis, and carotenoid biosynthesis pathways. Pathways such as plant-pathogen interaction and galactose metabolism were differentially regulated between severe drought and rewatering. Drought reduced the expression of lignin, gingerol, and flavonoid biosynthesis related genes and rewatering recovered the tubers from stress by increasing the expression of the genes. Increased expression of carotenoid biosynthesis pathway related genes under drought suggested their important role in stress endurance. An increase in starch and sucrose biosynthesis was evident from transcriptomic changes under drought stress. Rewatering recovered the drought affected tubers as evident from the contrasting expression profiles of genes related to these pathways.P. kingianumtuber experiences an increased biosynthesis of sucrose, starch, and carotenoid under drought stress. Drought decreases the flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, gingerol, and lignin biosynthesis. These changes can be reversed by rewatering theP. kingianumplants.ConclusionsThese results provide a transcriptome resource forP. kingianumand expands the knowledge on the effect of drought and rewatering on important pathways. This study also provides a large number of candidate genes that could be manipulated for drought stress tolerance and managing the polysaccharide and secondary metabolites’ contents inP. kingianum.

Damage to the plant water transport system through xylem cavitation is known to be a driver of plant death in drought conditions. However, a lack of techniques to continuously monitor xylem embolism in whole plants in vivo has hampered our ability to investigate both how this damage propagates and the possible mechanistic link between xylem damage and tissue death. Using optical and fluorescence sensors, we monitored drought-induced xylem embolism accumulation and photosynthetic damage in vivo throughout the canopy of a drought-resistant conifer, Callitris rhomboidea, during drought treatments of c. 1 month duration. We show that drought-induced damage to the xylem can be monitored in vivo in whole trees during extended periods of water stress. Under these conditions, vulnerability of the xylem to cavitation varied widely among branchlets, with photosynthetic damage only recorded once > 90% of the xylem was cavitated. The variation in branchlet vulnerability has important implications for understanding how trees like C. rhomboidea survive drought, and the high resistance of branchlets to tissue damage points to runaway cavitation as a likely driver of tissue death in C. rhomboidea branch tips.

A serious concern for nurseries is the potential for Phytophthora ramorum and other Phytophthora species to colonize roots without inducing aboveground symptoms in plants that then serve as cryptic reservoirs of inoculum. Episodic abiotic stresses that reduce plant water potential can compromise the host resistance to trigger disease development from root and crown infections during many Phytophthora–plant interactions. We conducted a series of experiments with root-inoculated Rhododendron plants in a potting soil mix to assess the influence of excess salt or water deficit on ramorum blight development and the potential for these abiotic stresses to affect the efficacy of oomycete-suppressive chemical soil treatments. During growth chamber trials, P. ramorum colonized roots of both nonsalt-treated and salt-treated plants. However, salt treatment offset the benefit realized from soil treatment with mefanoxam (Subdue Maxx) and mandipropamid (Micora), as evidenced by the enhanced pathogen colonization of roots. A 3-week episode of water stress imposed after chemical treatment but before inoculation eliminated protection against P. ramorum root colonization conferred by fosetyl-Al (Aliette). At an outdoor experimental nursery, foliar symptoms were apparent in 23% of root-inoculated plants during two trials and absent during one trial. However, the majority of inoculated plants in all trials had colonized roots with little or no aboveground symptoms. A single application of Subdue Maxx or Aliette reduced root colonization by P. ramorum in Rhododendron plants. Although salt stress did not enhance ramorum blight symptom expression at the nursery, salt partially offset protection from P. ramorum root colonization obtained by Subdue Maxx.

Background. Using LD50 concentrations of the osmotic PEG 6000 to select millet genotypes during seed germination for drought resistance breeding is the best way of millet genotype differentiation according to the studied trait.Materials and methods. The millet cultivars ‘Omriyane’, ‘Kharkovskoe 57’, ‘Konstantinovskoe’, ‘Slobozhanskoe’, and the accession IR 5 were selected as the test material. Water stress was applied through five concentrations of PEG (6000 MW): 11.5%, 15.3%, 19.6%, 23.5%, 28.9%, and 0.0% (control). On the sixth day of incubation, millet seed germination was measured. The regression method for assessing LD50 (half-lethal dose) by V. B. Prozorovskii was used to theoretically substantiate the selection of an optimal osmotic concentration, which would be most accurate in identifying the level of drought tolerance in millet genotypes during seed germination.Results and conclusions: The 15.3% to 28.9% concentrations of PEG 6000 solutions had a negative effect on seed germination of millet genotypes. A strongly suppressed seed germination rate was observed at the PEG concentration of 23.5%: germination percentage in all cultivars (except for IR 5, with 56.0%) fell below 50%. Calculations according to the Verhulst logistic curve and the probit analysis by V. B. Prozorovskii’s technique showed that the mean LD50 concentration of PEG 6000 solutions for all studied genotypes was 23.03%. Thus, as a result of the analysis of our experimental data and their statistical processing, we recommended the 23.0% concentration of PEG 6000 solution as the most differentiating in terms of drought resistance in the millet seed germination phase.

Bread wheat, one of the largest broadacre crops, often experiences various environmental stresses during critical growth stages. Terminal drought and heat stress are the primary causes of wheat yield reduction worldwide. This study aimed to determine the drought and heat stress tolerance level of a group of 46 diverse wheat genotypes procured from the Australian Grains Gene Bank, Horsham, VIC Australia. Two separate drought stress (DS) and heat stress (HS) pot experiments were conducted in separate growth chambers. Ten days after complete anthesis, drought (40 ± 3% field capacity for 14 days) and heat stress (36/22 °C for three consecutive days) were induced. A significant genotype × environment interaction was observed and explained by various morpho-physiological traits, including rapid, non-destructive infrared thermal imaging for computational water stress indices. Except for a spike length in DS and harvest index in HS, the analysis of variance showed significant differences for all the recorded traits. Results showed grains per spike, grains weight per spike, spike fertility, delayed flag leaf senescence, and cooler canopy temperature were positively associated with grain yield under DS and HS. The flag leaf senescence and chlorophyll fluorescence were used to measure each genotype’s stay-green phenotype and photosystem II activity after DS and HS. This study identified the top ten best and five lowest-performing genotypes from drought and heat stress experiments based on their overall performance. Results suggest that if heat or drought adaptive traits are brought together in a single genotype, grain yield can be improved further, particularly in a rainfed cropping environment.

Some physiological, oxidative, and antioxidant enzymatic patterns were assessed in plants of three local Sicilian landraces of long shelf-life tomatoes (‘Custonaci’, ‘Salina’, and ‘Vulcano’), as compared to the commercial tomato hybrid ‘Faino’ (control). Three water treatments were considered in open-field: DRY (no irrigation); IRR (long-season full irrigation); REW (drought/rewatering cycles). During the growing season, soil water deficit (SWD) was estimated, and relative water content (RWC), specific leaf area (SLA), proline and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were measured in leaves. Differently from control, RWC in local landraces exhibited a similar pattern in REW and DRY, indicating a low capacity to re-hydrate after rewatering. Positive correlation of proline content vs. SWD in all local landraces highlights an osmotic adjustment occurring in these tomatoes in response to limited soil water content. Long shelf-life tomatoes suffered minor oxidative stress due to severe soil water deficit, as revealed by the lower levels of MDA with respect to the control. Significant correlation of CAT vs. SWD for all tomatoes indicates that this antioxidant enzyme, among those analyzed, may be considered as a biomarker for a water stress condition more than for oxidative stress due to water deficit.

The major climate-related hazard to worldwide agricultural productivity is drought, which is becoming more common because of ongoing climate change, especially in the arid and semi-arid regions. Herein, we investigated the influence of biochar soil application at 0, (B1), 7.5 ha−1 (B2), and 15 t ha−1 (B3) on the productivity and drought-tolerance indices of wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Sakha 93) grown in sandy soil under irrigation levels of 100 (I1), 80 (I2), and 60% (I3) of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), as well as soil properties based on non-weighing lysimeter units. Increasing water deficiency significantly decreased the actual evapotranspiration (ETa) values. A growing biochar rate caused a significant increase in ETa values, water use efficiency, and wheat productivity compared to the untreated control. Additionally, biochar supplementation revealed an improvement in soil quality as measured by the reduction in the bulk density and hydraulic conductivity with an increase in the total porosity and void ratio of the experimental soil. The correlation analysis exhibited a highly significant and positive correlation (0.98 **) between biological yield and grain yield traits. Therefore, it may be stated that these traits are the most significant components of the evaluated grain yield in wheat plants. The productivity of I1 plants was not significantly different and slightly higher than that of I2 plants. Therefore, it can be recommended that exposed wheat plants cultivated in sandy soil with I2 × B3 treatment significantly provide the highest yield while saving 20% of the irrigation water.

The deterioration of plant mineral nutrition during drought is a significant factor in the negative influence of drought on plant performance. We aimed to study the effects of seasonal and multiyear water shortages on nutrient supply and demand in Scots pine and Norway spruce. We studied pine and spruce trees naturally grown in the Bryansk region (Russia). The dynamics of several nutrients (K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Ca) in wood, needles, and bark of current-year twigs and the dynamics of the available pools of these elements at different soil depths were analysed. To assess the physiological consequences of changes in element concentrations, lipid peroxidation products and photosynthetic pigments were measured in the needles. Water shortage increased the wood concentrations of all elements except for Mn. In pine, this increase was mainly due to seasonal water deficit, whereas in spruce, multiyear differences in water supply were more important. This increased availability of nutrients was not observed in soil-based analyses. In needles, quite similar patterns of changes were found between species, with Mg increasing almost twofold and Fe and Mn decreasing under water shortage, whereas the remainder of the elements did not change much under differing water supplies. Neither the concentrations of photosynthetic pigments nor the contents of lipid peroxidation products correlated with element dynamics in needles. In summary, water shortage increased the availability of all elements except Mn for the plant; however, needle element contents were regulated independently of element availability for plants.

Drought is one of the main abiotic stresses adversely affecting maize growth and grain yield. Identifying drought tolerance-related genes and breeding varieties with enhanced tolerance are effective strategies for minimizing the effects of drought stress. In this study, the leaf relative water content (LRWC) was used for evaluating drought tolerance. QTL-seq analysis of 419 F2 individuals from a cross between ZhengT22 (the drought-tolerant line with high LRWC) and ZhengA88 (the drought-sensitive line with low LRWC) revealed four LRWC-related QTLs (qLRWC2, qLRWC10a, qLRWC10b, and qLRWC10c) in maize seedlings under water deficit. Of these QTLs, qLRWC2 was located in a 2.03-Mb interval on chromosome 2, whereas qLRWC10a, qLRWC10b, and qLRWC10c were located in 2.85-, 3.99-, and 2.05-Mb intervals, respectively, on chromosome 10, and the 93 genes contained the variation loci locating in the four QTLs regions. To identify the candidate genes within the QTLs, an RNA-seq analysis was performed for the parents exposed to water deficit. Seven genes with effective variation loci showed significant difference in expression either in ZhengA88 or ZhengT22 in response to water deficit. Moreover, among the genes, ZmPrx64, ZmCIPK, HSP90, and ABCG34 have all been shown to be related to water stress in the previous studies. Thus, they are primary considered as the potential candidate genes controlling LRWC under water deficit at the seeding stage of maize in this study. These findings will help clarify the molecular basis of drought tolerance in maize seedlings and may be relevant for future functional analysis and for breeding drought-tolerant maize varieties.

The inquisitive role of boiling soluble proteins is still not well documented. Hence, this study demonstrated isolation, and sequencing of a water stress responsive cDNA which encodes LEA-like boiling soluble proteins (designated as TaBsSRP3 Triticum aestivum boiling soluble stress responsive proteins) from waters stressed seedlings from wheat (PBW 175) cultivar tolerant to drought stress. qRT-PCR analysis revealed high drought stress induced expression of TaBsSRP3 in tolerant cv. PBW 175. However, the level of TaBsSRP3 was substantially less in the susceptible cv. PBW 343. We described in-silico analysis and 3D modelling of TaBsSRP3 which predicted it as stress-responsive and boiling stable stable protein. The physio-chemical analysis of TaBsSRP3 revealed that it belongs to group 2 LEA proteins. Based upon these findings, it was postulated that how these boiling soluble proteins preclude the unfavourable effects of water stress.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants are able to adapt to restrictive environmental conditions mainly due to hormones such as brassinosteroids (BRs) that play important roles in determining stomata conductance and leaf transpiration. However, BRs effects on morphological traits like stomata and trichome position, size, and density, as well as on physiological traits resulting in better plant water use efficiency (WUE) and productivity, remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was to better understand the 2,4-epibrassinolide (EBL) mechanisms regulating leaf transpiration and WUE that can affect fruit production in tomato plants. According to results, treating tomato plants with exogenous EBL resulted in lower leaf transpiration, mainly from 9 to 16 h during the day, as well as lower stomata conductance and aperture, higher leaf water potential, higher net CO2 assimilation rate, higher number of stomata and trichome on leaf abaxial and adaxial surfaces, and higher plant dry mass accumulation, which improved plant WUE, compared to non-treated plants. EBL treatment also increased fruit size, fruit production per plant, and fruit quality traits such as higher dry mass and soluble solids content. In conclusion, BRs can improve plant adaptation to water stress conditions by regulating important physiological and morphological mechanisms, controlling plant WUE, and leading to higher fruit production.

It has been suggested that a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and safety is related to drought adaptation across species. However, whether leaf hydraulic efficiency is sacrificed for safety during woody resprout regrowth after crown removal is not well understood. We measured leaf water potential (ψleaf ) at predawn (ψpd ) and midday (ψmid ), leaf maximum hydraulic conductance (Kleaf-max ), ψleaf at induction 50% loss of Kleaf-max (Kleaf P50 ), leaf area-specific whole-plant hydraulic conductance (LSC), leaf vein structure and turgor loss point (πtlp ) in 1- to 13-year-old resprouts of the aridland shrub (Caragana korshinskii). ψpd was similar, ψmid and Kleaf P50 became more negative, and Kleaf-max decreased in resprouts with the increasing age; thus, leaf hydraulic efficiency clearly traded off against safety. The difference between ψmid and Kleaf P50 , leaf hydraulic safety margin, increased gradually with increasing resprout age. More negative ψmid and Kleaf P50 were closely related to decreasing LSC and more negative πtlp , respectively, and the decreasing Kleaf-max arose from the lower minor vein density and the narrower midrib xylem vessels. Our results showed that a clear trade-off between leaf hydraulic efficiency and safety helps C. korshinskii resprouts adapt to increasing water stress as they approach final size.

In this study, we hypothesized that Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. seedlings do not tolerate cultivation under water deficit, but shading could minimize stressor effects of water shortage and enable fast antioxidant responses, maintaining high photosynthetic rates and favoring stressed plant recovery. Therefore, we evaluated gas exchange and antioxidant activity of C. langsdorffii seedlings submitted to intermittent water deficit and different shading and their potential for metabolic recovery after re-irrigation. Seedlings were grown under 0, 30, and 70% shading and under continuous and intermittent irrigation. The plants were evaluated at the beginning of experiment, first and second zero photosynthesis, first and second recovery, and the end of experiment. Seedlings under intermittent irrigation and 0% shading could not recover their photosynthetic metabolism at the end of experiment, showing a marked decrease in rubisco carboxylation efficiency (A/Ci) and increase in antioxidant activity. Yet, seedlings grown under shading and intermittent irrigation could recover their photosynthetic metabolism, without permanent changes and/or damages to photosystem II efficiency, proving our hypothesis.

Plant responses to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2 ) have been hypothesized as a key mechanism that may ameliorate the impact of future drought. Yet, despite decades of experiments, the question of whether eCO2 reduces plant water use, yielding 'water savings' that can be used to maintain plant function during periods of water stress, remains unresolved. In this Viewpoint, we identify the experimental challenges and limitations to our understanding of plant responses to drought under eCO2 . In particular, we argue that future studies need to move beyond exploring whether eCO2 played 'a role' or 'no role' in responses to drought, but instead more carefully consider the timescales and conditions that would induce an influence. We also argue that considering emergent differences in soil water content may be an insufficient means of assessing the impact of eCO2 . We identify eCO2 impact during severe drought (e.g. to the point of mortality), interactions with future changes in vapour pressure deficit and uncertainty about changes in leaf area as key gaps in our current understanding. New insights into CO2 × drought interactions are essential to better constrain model theory that governs future climate model projections of land-atmosphere interactions during periods of water stress.

Predicting the magnitude of this impact urgently requires an understanding of the process connecting atmospheric drying to plant tissue damage. Recent episodes of forest mortality worldwide have been widely attributed to dry conditions causing acute damage to plant vascular systems. Under this scenario vascular embolisms produced by water stress are thought to cause plant death, yet this hypothetical trajectory has never been empirically demonstrated. Here we provide foundational evidence connecting failure in the vascular network of leaves with tissue damage caused during water stress. We observe a catastrophic sequence initiated by water column breakage under tension in leaf veins which severs local leaf tissue water supply, immediately causing acute cellular dehydration and irreversible damage. Mesophyll conductance (gm) is an important factor limiting photosynthesis. However, gm response to long-term growth in variable [CO2] is not well understood, particularly in crop plants. Here, we grew two cultivars of wheat (Halberd and Cranbrook), known to differ in gm under current environmental conditions, in four [CO2] treatments: glacial (206 μmol mol−1), pre-industrial (344 μmol mol−1), current ambient (489 μmol mol−1), and super-elevated (1085 μmol mol−1), and two water treatments (well-watered and moderate water limitation), to develop an evolutionary and future climate perspective on gm control of photosynthesis and water-use efficiency (WUE). In the two wheat genotypes, gm increased with rising [CO2] from glacial to ambient [CO2], but declined at super-elevated [CO2]. The responses of gm to different growth [CO2] also depend on water stress; however, the specific mechanism of gm response to [CO2] remains unclear. Although gm and gm/gsc (mesophyll conductance/stomatal conductance) were strongly associated with the variability of photosynthetic rates (A) and WUE, we found that plants with higher gm may increase A without increasing gsc, which increased WUE. These results may be useful to inform plant breeding programmes and cultivar selection for Australian wheat under future environmental conditions.

Questions: Flooding and drought stress are expected to increase significantly across the world and plant responses to these abiotic changes may be mediated by plant–plant interactions. Stress tolerance and recovery often require a biomass investment that may have consequences for these plant–plant interactions. Therefore, we questioned whether phenotypic plasticity in response to flooding and drought affected the balance between competition and facilitation for species with specific adaptations to drought or flooding. Location: Utrecht University. Methods: Stem elongation, root porosity, root:shoot ratio and biomass production were measured for six species during drought, well-drained and submerged conditions when grown alone or together with conspecifics. We quantified competition and facilitation as the ‘neighbour intensity effect’ directly after the 10-day treatment and again after a seven-day recovery period in well-drained conditions. Results: Water stress, planting density and species identity interactively affected standardized stem elongation in a way that could lead to facilitation during submergence for species that preferably grow in wet soils. Root porosity was affected by the interaction between neighbour presence and time-step. Plant traits were only slightly affected during drought. The calculated neighbour interaction effect indicated facilitation for wetland species during submerged conditions and, after a period to recover from flooding, for species that prefer dry habitats. Conclusions: Our results imply that changing plant–plant interactions in response to submergence and to a lesser extent to drought should be considered when predicting vegetation dynamics due to changing hydroclimatic regimes. Moreover, facilitation during a recovery period may enable species maladapted to flooding to persist.

Minimum tillage in rice production is increasing in southern Brazil, reaching 60% of the total planted area. Compared to conventional tillage, in this system there is an increase in the occurrence of perennial weeds, such as Luziola peruviana and Leersia hexandra, which are amphibious plants, as they can occur in both flooded environments and aerobic conditions. These weeds are controlled in burn-down before rice planting by glyphosate applications, the efficacy of which depends on the soil moisture. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different soil moisture regimes in L. hexandra and L. peruviana growth and photoassimilate partitioning. Both species were assessed under soil moisture regimes of flooded, saturated, 7 kPa, 15 kPa, 40 kPa, and 100 kPa (experiment 1) and flooded, saturated, and 7 kPa (experiment 2). Plants were sampled immediately after drainage (3 months after transplant) and 1 and 2 weeks after drainage. The results showed that as soil moisture levels decreased, growth and development parameters were negatively affected in both species. Photoassimilate partitioning was affected by water regime and differences were observed between species. The total soluble sugars and starch content decreased in the leaves, and sucrose concentration increased in the roots following drainage. Soil drainage affects the growth and alters carbohydrate partitioning of these weeds, increasing the sugar storage in roots. The agronomic impact of these findings is that this behavior may affect herbicide transport in phloem and may affect herbicide efficacy.

"Grapevine performance under drought largely depends on the varietal physiological and hydraulic strategies adopted in response to water stress. In this study we aimed to characterize the main ecophysiological traits of 'Glera' wine grape variety, for which no studies on water relations and ABA dynamics have so far been reported. Potted 'Glera' plants were subjected to prolonged mild and severe water stress conditions and compared with control plants. The course of leaf gas exchange, stem water potential (Wstem) and leaf ABA concentration were followed during the stress imposition and the rehydration processes. Yield and quality parameters were also measured at harvest. 'Glera' subjected to both severe and mild stress showed decreased leaf gas exchange, Wstem, agronomic and quality parameters. This was particularly evident in the severe stress, where net photosynthesis decreased progressively to zero due to significant stomatal limitation and it did not fully recover after rehydration. Agronomic and berry quality features measured at harvest did not recover either. In both stress treatments leaf ABA concentration increased only after stomatal closure and, for severe drought, ABA remained at high concentration till one day after re-watering. Re-watered plants quickly recovered Wstem while stomatal conductance gradually increased only when leaf ABA concentration decreased. In the present study, stomatal limitation was hydraulic dependent, while the decrease in leaf ABA concentration following re-watering was associated with gradual recovery of leaf gas exchange"

Water deficit during the early vegetative growth stages of wheat (Triticum) can limit shoot growth and ultimately impact grain productivity. Introducing diversity in wheat cultivars to enhance the range of phenotypic responses to water limitations during vegetative growth can provide potential avenues for mitigating subsequent yield losses. We tested this hypothesis in an elite durum wheat background by introducing a series of introgressions from a wild emmer (Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides) wheat. Wild emmer populations harbor rich phenotypic diversity for drought-adaptive traits. To determine the effect of these introgressions on vegetative growth under water-limited conditions, we used image-based phenotyping to catalog divergent growth responses to water stress ranging from high plasticity to high stability. One of the introgression lines exhibited a significant shift in root-to-shoot ratio in response to water stress. We characterized this shift by combining genetic analysis and root transcriptome profiling to identify candidate genes (including a root-specific kinase) that may be linked to the root-to-shoot carbon reallocation under water stress. Our results highlight the potential of introducing functional diversity into elite durum wheat for enhancing the range of water stress adaptation.

Root systems play a major role in supplying the canopy with water, enabling photosynthesis and growth. Yet, much of the dynamic response of root hydraulics and its influence on gas exchange during soil drying and recovery remains uncertain. We examined the decline and recovery of the whole root hydraulic conductance (Kr) and canopy diffusive conductance (gc) during exposure to moderate water stress in two species with contrasting root systems: Tanacetum cinerariifolium (herbaceous Asteraceae) and Callitris rhomboidea (woody conifer). Optical dendrometers were used to record stem water potential at high temporal resolution and enabled non-invasive measurements of Kr calculated from the rapid relaxation kinetics of water potential in hydrating roots. Microalgae, such as Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck (green algae), are beneficial microscopic organisms that may help plants to improve nutrient uptake, growth, and abiotic tolerance to stressors. The current study was performed to investigate the effectiveness of algae (Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck) foliar applications [1%, 3%, or 5% (v/v)] on mitigation of drought stress in broccoli plants subjected to water deficit at 25% of field capacity. The results showed that the broccoli plants grown under drought stress alone exhibited severe disturbance in growth with considerable reductions in the shoot length, and fresh and dry weights, leaf area, relative water content, leaf water potential, and photosynthetic pigment contents and elevated levels of the lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde in the leaves. Additionally, the foliar application of microalgae mitigated the detrimental effects of drought, leading to better growth performance (increase of 9%–132%) when compared with the drought-stressed plants that had not received an application of microalgae. Microalgae-mediated beneficial effects were particularly evident in the enhancement of the photosynthetic pigment contents, including chlorophyll-a (6%–60%), chlorophyll-b (19%–55%), and total carotenoids (26%–114%). Exogenous microalgae also contributed to the reduction of membrane damage, as proven by significantly decreased levels of malondialdehyde (10%–39%) in the leaves of the broccoli plants exposed to drought stress. The application of microalgae increased the total flavonoid and phenolic contents, and nutrition uptake. Furthermore, the activities of enzymatic antioxidants like ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, glutathione reductase, and superoxide dismutase increased in response to mediation, resulting in significant alleviation of drought-induced oxidative damage. The most effective application concentration of microalgae was determined as 5%. Overall investigations revealed that the foliar application of microalgae could be recommended as a sustainable strategy to improve the defense system of drought-stressed broccoli plants.

The UK climate is projected to become warmer, with more frequent hotter, drier summers. Many governments and international organisations are concerned about how climate change will affect food production and security. Mycorrhizal fungi are an essential part of agricultural systems and yet little is known about how climate change will affect mycorrhizal fungi. We investigated the effect of reduced precipitation on levels of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonisation in the top 10 cm of soil in the grass Holcus lanatus L. (Yorkshire Fog) in a permanent pasture in South Gloucestershire, UK. Incident rainfall was reduced, by approximately 50%, using clear gutters supported on steel frames. Over three growing seasons we observed little difference in levels of AM colonisation and numbers of intra-root fungal structures between the roots of H. lanatus grown with reduced or full incident rainfall. Time of year when water stress occurred had a stronger effect on levels of colonisation than the absolute amount of precipitation received. In H. lanatus, growing in a permanent pasture, levels of AM colonisation were around 40%–50%, across a range of precipitation, from 18% above to 36% below the long-term average. The results highlight the complex relationships between mycorrhizal fungi, host plant, and abiotic stress.

Polygonum cuspidatum, an important medicinal plant, is rich in resveratrol and polydatin, but it frequently suffers from drought stress in the nursery stage, which inhibits the plant’s growth, active components concentrations, and the price of rhizome in the later stage. The purpose of this study was to analyze how exogenous 100 mM melatonin (MT) (an indole heterocyclic compound) affected biomass production, water potential, gas exchange, antioxidant enzyme activities, active components levels, and resveratrol synthase (RS) gene expression of P. cuspidatum seedlings growing under well-watered and drought stress conditions. The 12-week drought treatment negatively affected the shoot and root biomass, leaf water potential, and leaf gas exchange parameters (photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate), whereas the application of exogenous MT significantly increased these variables of stressed and non-stressed seedlings, accompanied by higher increases in the biomass, photosynthetic rate, and stomatal conductance under drought versus well-watered conditions. Drought treatment raised the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase in the leaves, while the MT application increased the activities of the three antioxidant enzymes regardless of soil moistures. Drought treatment reduced root chrysophanol, emodin, physcion, and resveratrol levels, while it dramatically promoted root polydatin levels. At the same time, the application of exogenous MT significantly increased the levels of the five active components, regardless of soil moistures, with the exception of no change in the emodin under well-watered conditions. The MT treatment also up-regulated the relative expression of PcRS under both soil moistures, along with a significantly positive correlation between the relative expression of PcRS and resveratrol levels. In conclusion, exogenous MT can be employed as a biostimulant to enhance plant growth, leaf gas exchange, antioxidant enzyme activities, and active components of P. cuspidatum under drought stress conditions, which provides a reference for drought-resistant cultivation of P. cuspidatum.

In its natural distribution, Araucaria araucana is a plant species usually exposed to extreme environmental constraints such as wind, volcanism, fires, and low rainfall. This plant is subjected to long periods of drought, accentuated by the current climate emergency, causing plant death, especially in its early growth stages. Understanding the benefits that both arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and endophytic fungi (EF) could provide plants under different water regimes would generate inputs to address the above-mentioned issues. Here, the effect of AMF and EF inoculation (individually and combined) on the morphophysiological variables of A. araucana seedlings subjected to different water regimes was evaluated. Both the AMF and EF inocula were obtained from A. araucana roots growing in natural conditions. The inoculated seedlings were kept for 5 months under standard greenhouse conditions and subsequently subjected to three different irrigation levels for 2 months: 100, 75, and 25% of field capacity (FC). Morphophysiological variables were evaluated over time. Applying AMF and EF + AMF yielded a noticeable survival rate in the most extreme drought conditions (25% FC). Moreover, both the AMF and the EF + AMF treatments promoted an increase in height growth between 6.1 and 16.1%, in the production of aerial biomass between 54.3 and 62.6%, and in root biomass between 42.5 and 65.4%. These treatments also kept the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm 0.71 for AMF and 0.64 for EF + AMF) stable, as well as high foliar water content (>60%) and stable CO2 assimilation under drought stress. In addition, the EF + AMF treatment at 25% FC increased the total chlorophyll content. In conclusion, using indigenous strains of AMF, alone or in combination with EF, is a beneficial strategy to produce A. araucana seedlings with an enhanced ability to tolerate prolonged drought periods, which could be of great relevance for the survival of these native species under the current climate change.

African lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula) is one of the invasive perennial grasses that continues to disturb natural ecosystems globally. Experiments were conducted in southeast Queensland, Australia, to evaluate the effects of temperature, salt stress, water stress, burial depth, and sorghum crop residue load on the emergence and efficacy of postemergence herbicides on two populations (Clifton and Crows Nest) of E. curvula. The optimal germination temperature regimes for E. curvula were 30/20 and 35/25 °C, but seeds did not germinate at temperatures commonly occurring in the Queensland winter (15/5 °C). Total darkness inhibited germination by 79%, indicating that the shade cover effect would reduce germination of E. curvula. The Clifton population tolerated a higher concentration of sodium chloride (160 mM) and osmotic potential (−0.8 MPa). Under both salt and water stress, germination was 31% and 20% greater in the Clifton population than in Crows Nest, respectively, suggesting that the Clifton population is more tolerant to salt and drought stress. The maximum germination was obtained for the surface seeds while emergence declined with increased burial depth up to 4 cm. No seedlings emerged from the 8 cm depth. The addition of sorghum residue amounts up to 8 Mg ha−1 to the soil surface inhibited emergence compared to the no-residue treatment, suggesting that retention of heavy cereal residue will further delay or restrict emergence. Several postemergence herbicides were found to be effective in controlling E. curvula at an early stage. Information from this study will further compliment earlier studies on the targeted management of E. curvula populations.

Mediterranean ecosystems face threats from both climate change and shrub invasion. As shrub cover increases, competition for water intensifies, exacerbating the negative effects of drought on ecosystem functioning. However, research into the combined effects of drought and shrub invasion on tree carbon assimilation has been limited. We used a Mediterranean cork oak (Quercus suber) woodland to investigate the effects of drought and shrub invasion by gum rockrose (Cistus ladanifer) on cork oak carbon assimilation and photosynthetic capacity. We established a factorial experiment of imposed drought (ambient and rain exclusion) and shrub invasion (invaded and non-invaded) and measured leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and photosynthesis as well as photosynthetic capacity in cork oak and gum rockrose over one year. We observed distinct detrimental effects of gum rockrose shrub invasion on the physiological responses of cork oak trees throughout the study period. Despite the imposed drought, the impact of shrub invasion was more pronounced, resulting in significant photosynthetic capacity reduction of 57% during summer. Stomatal and non-stomatal limitations were observed under moderate drought in both species. Our findings provide significant knowledge on the impact of gum rockrose invasion on the functioning of cork oak and can be used to improve the representation of photosynthesis in terrestrial biosphere models.
