Abstract

In the past two decades, pions created in the high density regions of heavy ion collisions have been predicted to be sensitive at high densities to the symmetry energy term in the nuclear equation of state, a property that is key to our understanding of neutron stars. In a new experiment designed to study the symmetry energy, the multiplicities of negatively and positively charged pions have been measured with high accuracy for central 132Sn+124Sn, 112Sn+124Sn, and 108Sn+112Sn collisions at E/A=270 MeV with the SπRIT Time Projection Chamber. While individual pion multiplicities are measured to 4% accuracy, those of the charged pion multiplicity ratios are measured to 2% accuracy. We compare these data to predictions from seven major transport models. The calculations reproduce qualitatively the dependence of the multiplicities and their ratios on the total neutron and proton number in the colliding systems. However, the predictions of the transport models from different codes differ too much to allow extraction of reliable constraints on the symmetry energy from the data. This finding may explain previous contradictory conclusions on symmetry energy constraints obtained from pion data in Au+Au system. These new results call for still better understanding of the differences among transport codes, and new observables that are more sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy.

Abstract

International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or lightcomplex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energieshas been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of thesymmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturationdensities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows ofneutrons and light charged particles were measured for 197Au+197Au,96Zr+96Zr and 96Ru+96Ru collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon with theLarge Area Neutron Detector LAND as part of a setup with severaladditional detection systems used for the event characterization. Flowresults obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictionsof the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to lineardensity dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlierFOPI-LAND data.

Abstract

Results from the BRAHMS Collaboration for the inaugural physics run with the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC), Au + Au collisions at √sNN = 130 GeV in the late summer of 2000, and some results of the very first data from the summer of 2001 at √sNN = 200 GeV are presented. Here the main focus is on the determination of the pseudorapidity distribution of charged particles as a function of collision centrality and on the measurement of the antiproton to proton and the K− to K+ ratios as a function of rapidity. The pseudorapidity density at midrapidity reaches dN(ch)/dη = 553 ± 36 for the most central collisions (0–5%) at √sNN = 130 GeV; the corresponding number for a higher energy is dN(ch)/dη = 632 ± 36, demonstrating an increase in multiplicity of about 14%. The measured antiproton/proton ratios peak at midrapidity around N()/N(p) = 0.64 ± 0.06 and drop to 0.41 ± 0.04 at y ≈ 2 for √sNN = 130 GeV reactions; the K− to K+ ratios are 0.90 ± 0.06 (y ≈ 0) and 0.83 ± 0.1 (y ≈ 2.5).

Abstract

We propose a two-stage, stochastic model of heavy-ion reactions. Nucleons becoming participants by mean-field effects or by nucleon-nucleon interactions are transferred to definite final states, creating a PLF, a TLF, clusters, or escaping to continuum. Nucleon transfer probabilities are governed by state densities. In this way different hot particle sources are created which afterwards decay by particle emission.

Abstract

Projectile-like fragments (PLF's) emitted in damped collisions of 15 MeV/u 20Ne ions with 197Au were observed in coincidence with two fission fragments. For given detection angles of the PLF's differential and energy-integrated fission probabilities were obtained and the average missing momentum vectors were deduced by using improved analysis methods of the fission fragment angular correlation. The average missing momentum vectors were found to point in the direction of the observed PLF, with a systematic deviation towards beam direction for larger mass transfers. The missing momentum thus appears to mainly originate from the sequential decay of the PLF's.

Abstract

The yields of intermediate-mass fragments from the reactions 14N + 159Tb/natAg/ natCu have been measured at 22 MeV/u. A complete set of double-differential cross sections d 2 σ/ d E d Ω ranging from 15° to 165° and with low-energy thresholds has been obtained. The evolution of the intermediate-mass spectra from quasi-elastic via more dissipative reactions towards evaporation can be followed and has been compared with a phenomenological random-walk model. For the system studied, the results suggest damped collisions as the only source for the emission of intermediate-mass fragments in the dissipative regime.

Abstract

Fusionlike processes were studied in the {sup 14}N+{sup 232}Th reaction at 30 MeV per nucleon. Partition of the fusionlike cross section was determined by detecting nonequilibrium charged particles with an array of phoswich detectors (plastic wall) in coincidence with fission fragments for which the folding angle and thus the momentum transfer was measured. By measuring both single and multiple hits in the plastic wall and by correcting for its incomplete angular coverage a very extensive database of the fusionlike channels was obtained. The results were compared with model predictions comprising the BUU, Fermi jetting, the Boltzmann master equation model, and the nucleon-exchange transport model. It was found that these models which globally describe the dependence of the inclusive momentum transfer in fusionlike reactions cannot account for the associated particle production, in particular if the nucleons bound in the observed complex particles ({ital d},{ital t},{alpha}) are included in the comparison. Calculations of the energy spectra of the complex particles with the coalescence formalism indicate that a large fraction of the observed complex particles in the fusionlike reactions cannot be accounted for by pre-equilibrium emission from the fused composite system. Abstract

NA61/SHINE (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) is a multi-purpose experimental facility to study hadron production in hadron-proton, hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. It recorded the first physics data with hadron beams in 2009 and with ion beams (secondary 7Be beams) in 2011. NA61/SHINE has greatly profited from the long development of the CERN proton and ion sources and the accelerator chain as well as the H2 beamline of the CERN North Area. The latter has recently been modified to also serve as a fragment separator as needed to produce the Be beams for NA61/SHINE. Numerous components of the NA61/SHINE set-up were inherited from its predecessors, in particular, the last one, the NA49 experiment. Important new detectors and upgrades of the legacy equipment were introduced by the NA61/SHINE Collaboration. This paper describes the state of the NA61/SHINE facility - the beams and the detector system - before the CERN Long Shutdown I, which started in March 2013. Abstract

A telescope for the identification of heavy ions over an extended energy range is described. The energy loss Δ E is measured with an ionisation chamber supplied with the range-sensitive charge collection system. The particle residual energy E can be measured with a solid state detector. Two modes of operation are available: a standard ΔEt − E identification, or a charge integration along the track with a continuous resistivity anode. By a proper formation of this resistivity, one can obtain an identification signal proportional to the Z value in a large range of incident energies.

Abstract

The evaporation residue cross section for fusion-like reactions of 309 MeV 14N+159Tb has been decomposed into cross sections for complete fusion and a number of specific incomplete fusion channels using a novel technique involving light-particle-KX-ray coincidences. With this partition it is possible to successfully describe the incomplete momentum transfer observed in velocity spectra of evaporation residues from a very similar system.

Abstract

The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Abstract

A new technique of large-area thin ion implanted silicon detectors has been developed within the R&D performed by the FAZIA Collaboration. The essence of the technique is the application of a low-temperature baking process instead of high-temperature annealing. This thermal treatment is performed after B+ ion implantation and Al evaporation of detector contacts, made by using a single adjusted Al mask. Extremely thin silicon pads can be therefore obtained. The thickness distribution along the X and Y directions was measured for a prototype chip by the energy loss of α-particles from 241Am (〈E α 〉 = 5.5 MeV). Preliminary tests on the first thin detector (area ≈ 20 × 20 mm2) were performed at the INFN-LNS cyclotron in Catania (Italy) using products emitted in the heavy-ion reaction 84Kr (E = 35 A MeV) + 112Sn. The ΔE − E ion identification plot was obtained using a telescope consisting of our thin ΔE detector (21 μm thick) followed by a typical FAZIA 510 μm E detector of the same active area. The charge distribution of measured ions is presented together with a quantitative evaluation of the quality of the Z resolution. The threshold is lower than 2 A MeV depending on the ion charge.

Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich heavy-ions systems at intermediate energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear Equation Of State (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011., Comment: Talk given by P.
