Abstract

The reduced transition probabilities for the 4-> and 2->0 transitions in 92Mo and 94Ru and for the 4->2 and 6->4 transitions in 90Zr have been determined in this experiment making use of a multinucleon transfer reaction. These results have been interpreted on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations in the f5/2, p3/2, p1/2, and g9/2 proton valence space. Only the combination of extensive lifetime information and large scale shell-model calculations allowed the extent of the seniority conservation in the N=50 g9/2 orbital to be understood. The conclusion is that seniority is largely conserved in the first πg9/2 orbital.

2. Study of the population of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the A~200 mass region via multinucleon transfer reactions

Abstract

Multineutron and multiproton transfer channels, populated in the inverse kinematics reaction 197Au+130Te at Elab=1.07 GeV, were measured at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the presently heaviest ion beam delivered by the PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and detecting both projectile-like and targetlike ions. To this end the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was coupled to a second arm for the detection of the heavy fragments in kinematic coincidence with the light ones selected and identified with the spectrometer. The data analysis is still in progress and will allow to compare the yields of both light and heavy partner with theoretical predictions performed with the GRAZING code to get quantitative information on transfer channels and the effect of evaporation and fission on the production rate of primary fragments. The mass integrated Z distribution, extracted from the experimental data, evidenced the population of proton pickup channels that, in conjunction with the neutron stripping ones from the 130Te, open the path for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. In the following, we will present some preliminary results as well as details on the experimental configuration and perspectives for future investigations in the neutron-rich heavy region.

Abstract

The fusion excitation function for the positive-Q-value system 12C+30Si (Qfus = +14.1 MeV) has been measured in inverse kinematics down to the μb level and compared with standard coupled-channel calculations. The appearance of the fusion hindrance phenomenon and the evidence of a S-factor maximum have been observed. This result can be significant to extrapolate the behavior of lighter astrophysical relevant systems at deep sub-barrier energies, where existing experimental data are still contradicting and affected by large errors.

Abstract

The near- and sub-barrier fusion excitation function has been measured for the system 30Si+30Si at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of INFN, using the 30Si beam of the XTU Tandem accelerator in the energy range 47 - 90 MeV. A set-up based on a beam electrostatic deflector was used for detecting fusion evaporation residues. The measured cross sections have been compared to previous data on 28Si+28Si and Coupled Channels (CC) calculations have been performed using M3Y+repulsion and Woods-Saxon potentials, where the lowlying 2+ and 3− excitations have been included. A weak imaginary potential was found to be necessary to reproduce the low energy 28Si+28Si data. This probably simulates the effect of the oblate deformation of this nucleus. On the contrary, 30Si is a spherical nucleus, 30Si+30Si is nicely fit by CC calculations and no imaginary potential is needed. For this system, no maximum shows up for the astrophysical S-factor so that we have no evidence for hindrance, as confirmed by the comparison with CC calculations. The logarithmic derivative of the two symmetric systems highlights their different low energy trend. A difference can also be noted in the two barrier distributions, where the high-energy peak present in 28Si+28Si is not observed for 30Si+30Si, probably due to the weaker couplings in last case.

Abstract

Excitation functions of one- and two-neutron transfer channels have been measured for the closed shell 40Ca+96Zr and superfluid 60Ni+116Sn systems from the Coulomb barrier energy to energies far below. By using the unique PRISMA performance in terms of resolution and efficiency, measurements at very low bombarding energies have been performed. In the case of the 60Ni+116Sn system, a complementary particle-γ coincident measurements provide the ground and excited state populations. The experimental transfer probabilities have been compared with semiclasical microscopic calculations that incorporate nucleon-nucleon correlations, together with known structure information of entrance and exit channels nuclei and reaction dynamics. These calculations well reproduce, in the whole energy range, one- and two-neutron transfer channels in shape and magnitude.

Abstract

In order to better understand the influence of transfer in sub-barrier nuclear reactions, cross sections for the system 58,64Ni+124Sn have been measured down to 0.5-1 µb and compared to detailed coupledchannel calculations. In agreement with a phenomenological Q-value systematics, calculations show the importance of including the coupling to the transfer channel for these heavy systems. No clear evidence of fusion hindrance is observed, probably due to the fact that the cross sections measured in this experiment are not low enough for the appearance of that phenomenon.

Abstract

Fusion cross sections have been measured in the 40Ca + 58Ni and 40Ca + 64Ni systems at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier. The 40Ca beam was delivered by the XTU Tandem accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro and evaporation residues were measured at very forward angles with the LNL electrostatic beam deflector. Coupled-channels calculations were performed which highlight possible strong effects of neutron transfers on the fusion below the barrier in the 40Ca + 64Ni system. Microscopic time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations have also been performed for both systems. Preliminary results are shown.

In the last period, two classes of experiments have been carried out with the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. In particular, the one- and two-neutron transfer processes at energies ranging from the Coulomb barrier to deep below it and the population of exotic neutron rich nuclei in the A~130 and A~200 mass regions have been studied. Both kinds of experiments have been performed in inverse kinematics identifying in A, Z and velocity the light target-like recoils with PRISMA placed at very forward angles in order to have, at the same time, high efficiency and good energy and mass resolutions.

Abstract

The fusion excitation function of 48Ti + 58Fe has been measured in a wide energy range around the Coulomb barrier, covering 6 orders of magnitude of the cross sections. We present here the preliminary results of this experiment, and a full comparison with the near-by system 58Ni + 54Fe where evidence of fusion hindrance shows up at relatively high cross sections. The sub-barrier cross sections of 48Ti + 58Fe are much larger than those of 58Ni + 54Fe. Significant differences are also observed in the logarithmic derivatives, astro-physical S-factors and fusion barrier distributions. The influence of low-energy nuclear structure on all these trends is pointed out and commented. Coupled-channels calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential are able to reproduce the experimental results for 48Ti + 58Fe. The logarithmic derivative of the excitation function is very nicely fit, and no evidence of hindrance is observed down to around 1 μb. The fusion barrier distribution is rather wide, flat and structureless. It is only in qualitative agreement with the calculated distribution.

Abstract

The sub-barrier fusion excitation function of 40Ca + 96Zr has been measured down to cross sections ≃2.4µb, i.e. two orders of magnitude smaller than obtained in the previous experiment, where the sub-barrier fusion of this system was found to be greatly enhanced with respect to 40Ca + 90Zr, and the need of coupling to transfer channels was suggested. The purpose of this work was to investigate the behavior of 40Ca + 96Zr fusion far below the barrier. The smooth trend of the excitation function has been found to continue, and the logarithmic slope increases very slowly. No indication of hindrance shows up, and a comparison with 48Ca + 96Zr is very useful in this respect. A new CC analysis of the complete excitation function has been performed, including explicitly one- and two-nucleon Q >0 transfer channels. Such transfer couplings bring significant cross section enhancements, even at the level of a few µb. Locating the hindrance threshold, if any, in 40Ca + 96Zr would require challenging measurements of cross sections in the sub-µb range.

Abstract

Spin distribution measurements were performed for the reaction 64Ni + 100Mo at three beam energies ranging from 230 to 260 MeV. Compound nucleus (CN) spin distributions were obtained channel selective for each evaporation residue populated by the de-excitation cascade. A comparison of the spin distribution at different beam energies indicates that its slope becomes steeper and steeper with increasing beam energy. This change in slope of the spin distribution is mainly due to the onset of fission competition with particle evaporation at higher beam energies.

Abstract

The neutron-rich isotopes of tungsten, osmium and platinum have different shapes in their ground states and present also shape transitions phenomena. Spectroscopic information for these nuclei is scarce and often limited to the gamma rays from the decay of isomeric states. For the neutron-rich even-even osmium isotopes 194Os and 198Os, a shape transition between a slightly prolate deformed to an oblate deformed ground state was deduced from the observed level schemes. For the even-even nucleus lying in between, 196Os, no gamma ray transition is known. In order to elucidate the shape transition and to test the nuclear models describing it, this region was investigated through gamma-ray spectroscopy using the AGATA demonstrator and the large acceptance heavy-ion spectrometer PRISMA at LNL, Italy. A two-nucleon transfer from a 198Pt target to a stable 82Se beam was utilized to populate medium-high spin states of 196Os. The analysis method and preliminary results, including the first life-time measurement of isomeric states with AGATA, are presented.

Abstract

Fusion excitation functions of light heavy-ion systems show oscillatory structures above the Coulomb barrier, caused by resonances or due to the penetration of successive centrifugal barriers well separated in energy. In heavier systems, the amplitude of oscillations decreases and the peaks get nearer to each other. This makes the measurements very challenging. We have performed a first experiment for 28Si + 28Si, by measuring fusion cross sections (σ) in an energy range of ≃15 MeV above the barrier, with a small ΔElab = 0.5 MeV step. Three regular oscillations are clearly observed, which are best revealed by plotting the energy-weighted derivative of the excitation function. The excitation function has been recently measured down to cross sections ≤1μb with larger energy steps. Coupled-channel (CC) calculations based on a shallow potential in the entrance channel are able to reproduce the oscillations. A further analysis will provide a stringent test for the calculations, in particular for the choice of the ion-ion potential, because the subbarrier excitation function has to be reproduced as well. Abstract

The heavy ion reaction 22Ne+208Pb at 128 MeV of bombarding energy has been studied using the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup at Legnaro National Laboratories. Elastic, inelastic and one nucleon transfer cross sections have been measured. The experimental results are presented in parallel with the analysis on existing data for the unstable 24Ne nucleus, from the reaction 24Ne+208Pb at 182 MeV (measured at SPIRAL with the VAMOS-EXOGAM setup). The β2C charge deformation parameter for both 22Ne and 24Ne has been determined by a DWBA analysis of the experimental angular dis- tributions, showing a strong reduction for 24Ne.

Abstract

International audience; We studied multinucleon transfer (MNT) processes in the $^{197}$Au + $^{130}$Te at E$_{lab}$=1.07 GeV system coupling the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer to NOSE, an ancillary particle detector. We constructed a mass correlation matrix associating to each light fragment identified in PRISMA the corresponding mass distribution of the heavy partner detected in NOSE and, through the comparison with Monte Carlo simulations, we could infer about the role of neutron evaporation in multinucleon transfer reactions for the population of neutron-rich heavy nuclei.

Abstract

The GALILEO $\gamma$-ray spectrometer has been constructed at the Legnaro National Laboratory of INFN (LNL-INFN). It can be coupled to advanced ancillary devices which allows nuclear structure studies employing the variety of in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy methods. Such studies benefit from reactions induced by the intense stable beams delivered by the Tandem-ALPI-PIAVE accelerator complex and by the radioactive beams which will be provided by the SPES facility. In this paper we outline two experiments performed within the experimental campaign at GALILEO coupled to the EUCLIDES Si-ball and the Neutron Wall array. The first one was aimed at spectroscopic studies in A=31 mirror nuclei and the second one at measurements of lifetimes of excited states in nuclei in the vicinity of $^{100}$Sn., Comment: The IX International Symposium on EXOtic Nuclei (EXON-2018)

Abstract

Multinucleon transfer reactions have been investigated in 40Ar+208Pb with the Prisma+Clara set-up. The experimental differential cross sections of different neutron transfer channels have been obtained at three different angular settings taking into account the transmission through the spectrometer. The experimental yields of the excited states have been determined via particle-γ coincidences. In odd Ar isotopes, we reported a signif cant population of 11/2− states, reached via neutron transfer. Their structure matches a stretched conf guration of the valence neutron coupled to vibration quanta.

Abstract

Multinucleon transfer cross sections in the system 40Ca+96Zr have been measured at bombarding energies ranging from the Coulomb barrier to ~ 25% below. Target-like (lighter) recoils in inverse kinematics have been completely identif ed in A,Z and Q-value with the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The experimental slopes of the neutron transfer probabilities at large internuclear separation are consistent with the values derived from the binding energies. A phenomenological interpretation of the transfer probabilities indicates the presence of enhanced values for the even number of neutron transfers.

Abstract

We discuss how shape‐isomers can be determined from the quasi‐dynamical SU(3) symmetry based on the Nilsson‐model. The possible clusterization of superdeformed and hyperdeformed states are also investigated. The allowed cluster‐configurations give a hint, for the favourable reaction channels for populating these states. An illustrative example is presented, in which the theoretical prediction is justified by the experimental observation.

Abstract

A series of experiments devoted to the study of the neutron‐rich N∼426 region have been performed at GSI, Darmstadt, within the Rare Isotopes Investigations at GSI (RISING) project. The highlights of the experimental results from these highly successful experiments include the first observation of excited states in three neutron‐rich N = 126 closed shell nuclei: (i) In 205Au79 the conversion electron decay of the πh11/2−1 seconds lived isomeric state into the πd3/2−1 ground‐state has been observed. In addition the yrast structure has been established up to spin‐parity (19/2+) via the observation of the decay of an isomeric state with configuration π(h11/2−1)10(s1/2−1); (ii) In 204Pt78, the yrast sequence has been observed following the internal decay of Iπ = (5−), (7−) and (10+) isomeric states; (iii) In 203Ir77 excited states have been observed following the decay of an isomeric state with structure ’similar’ to that in its 205Au isotone. Shell model calculations have been performed in order to get a deeper understanding of the structure of these N = 126 nuclei. It was found that in order to get a good description for all available information on the N = 126 isotones below lead, both on excitation energies and transition strengths, small modifications of the standard two‐body matrix elements were required.

Abstract

The fully self‐consistent finite temperature relativistic random phase approximation (FTRRPA) has been established in the single‐nucleon basis of the temperature dependent Dirac‐Hartree model (FTDH) based on effective Lagrangian with density dependent meson‐nucleon couplings. Illustrative calculations in the FTRRPA framework show the evolution of multipole responses of 132Sn with temperature. With increased temperature, in both monopole and dipole strength distributions additional transitions appear in the low energy region due to the new opened particle‐particle and hole‐hole transition channels.

Abstract

This paper describes the entrance detector of the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA recently installed at Legnaro. The detector is based on rectangular (80 x 100 mm(2)) Micro-Channel Plates (MCP). It provides a fast time signal and its position-sensitive anode allows to extract the X and Y information. It exploits an electrostatic field for the acceleration of secondary electrons from a thin Carbon foil (similar or equal to 20 mu g/cm(2)) onto the MCP assembly. The electrons are guided by a parallel magnetic field. Good performances were obtained in the laboratory tests. The detector is presently installed at the entrance of PRISMA and gives resolutions

Abstract

Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be used to populate nuclei with relatively large neutron excess. Recently, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, a setup consisting on an efficient γ-ray detection system CLARA coupled to the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, capable of tracking the trajectories of the reaction products, has been assembled. During the first year of activity, the experiments performed with the CLARA-PRISMA setup, have been focused mainly on the nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei. In particular, nuclei around N=20, N=50 and lying in the A∼60 transitional region with N<40, have been investigated. Abstract

Following the commissioning of the PRISMA large-acceptance spectrometer, installed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), an international nuclear-structure collaboration has started to develop a large $\gamma$ -ray setup to be installed in the target position of the spectrometer. The array is based on the EUROBALL composite CLOVER detectors. In this contribution the CLOVER detector array is described and its expected performance figures discussed. This new setup, by using the high-intensity heavy-ion beams provided by the LNL ALPI linac, will push the study of nuclear structure towards moderately neutron-rich nuclei by means of quasi-elastic and deep inelastic reactions.

Abstract

Multi-nucleon transfer reactions are nowadays the only known mean to produce neutron-rich nuclei in the Terra Incognita. The closed-shell region N=126 is crucial for both studying shell-quenching in exotic nuclei and the r-process, being its last "waiting-point". The choice of suitable reactions is challenging and a favorable case is 136Xe+208Pb, near the Coulomb barrier, because their neutron shell-closures play a stabilizing role, favoring the proton-transfer from lead to xenon. TOF-TOF data were analyzed to reconstruct the mass-energy distribution of the primary fragments. Preliminary results of an experiment held at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with PRISMA, aimed at A and Z identification of the products, will be shown. peerReviewed

Abstract

Expérience LNL/PRISMA; International audience; The unexplored area of heavy neutron rich nuclei is extremely important for nuclearastrophysics investigations and, in particular, for the understanding of the r-process ofastrophysical nucleogenesis. For the production of heavy neutron rich nuclei located along theneutron closed shell N=126 (probably the last "waiting point" in the r-process of nucleosynthesis)the low-energy multi-nucleon transfer reaction 136Xe+208Pb at Elab=870MeV was explored.Due to the stabilizing eect of the closed neutron shells in both nuclei, N=82 and N=126, andthe rather favorable proton transfer from lead to xenon, the light fragments formed in this processare well bound and the Q-value of the reaction is nearly zero.Measurements were performed with the PRISMA spectrometer in coincidence with an additionaltime-of-flight (ToF) arm on the +20 beam line of the PIAVE-ALPI accelerator in Legnaro, Italy.The PRISMA spectrometer allows identication of the A, Z and velocity of the projectile-likefragments (PLF), while the second arm gives access to the target-like fragments (TLF).Details on the experimental setup and preliminary results are reported.

Conference on Frontiers in Nuclear Structure, Astrophysics, and Reactions -- SEP 10-14, 2007 -- Crete, GREECE, WOS: 000256223700023, Medium and high spin states of the nuclei close to the N=50 shell closure are investigated Using deep inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions. New excited states of the nuclei Ga-81, Ge-82 and As-83 at N=50 shell closure have been identified by means of the Se-82+U-238 reaction. Abstract

We analyze the decoherence induced on a single qubit by the interaction with a two-level boson system with critical internal dynamics. We explore how the decoherence process is affected by the presence of quantum phase transitions in the environment. We conclude that the dynamics of the qubit changes dramatically when the environment passes through a continuous excited state quantum phase transition. If the system-environment coupling energy equals the energy at which the environment has a critical behavior, the decoherence induced on the qubit is maximal and the fidelity tends to zero with finite size scaling obeying a power-law. Abstract

The CLARA-PRISMA setup is a powerful tool for spectroscopic studies of neutron-rich nuclei produced in multi-nucleon transfer and deep-inelastic reactions. It combines the large acceptance spectrometer PRISMA with the gamma-ray array CLARA. At present, the ancillary heavy-ion detector DANTE, based on Micro-Channel Plates to be installed at the CLARA-PRISMA setup, is being constructed at LNL. DANTE will open the possibility of measuring gamma-gamma-Doppler-corrected coincidences for the events outside the acceptance of PRISMA. In this presentation, it is described the heavy-ion detector DANTE, as well as the performances of the first prototype.

Abstract

Since the discovery of the breakdown of shell effects in very neutron-rich N=20 and 28 nuclei, studies of the properties of nuclei far from stability have been of intense interest since they provide a unique opportunity to increase our understanding of nuclear interactions in extreme conditions and often challenge our theoretical models. Deep-inelastic processes can be used to populated high spin states of neutron-rich nuclei. In the deep-inelastic processes, an equilibration in N/Z between the target and projectile nuclei is achieved. For most heavy neutron-rich target nuclei, the N/Z ratio is 1.5 - 1.6, while for the possible neutron-rich sdf-shell projectile it is about 1.2. Thus by using deep-inelastic processes one can populate neutron-rich nuclei around N=20 and N=28. New results for the spectroscopy of neutron-rich N=22 ^36Si and ^37P are presented here.
