Low-energy cosmic ray antideuterons ($

Fission yields are essential data for reactor physics, forensics, and astrophysics. In some cases, the fission yield of a fragment is divided between the ground state and a long-lived excited state, and the relative population of the two states is referred to as the isomeric ratio. In this work, we present a comprehensive compilation of experimental isomeric fission yield ratios for all target and projectile combinations. When possible, these data are combined to provide recommended isomeric fission yield ratios for low energy neutron-induced fission and spontaneous fission. The recommended ratios are compared to the traditional Madland-England model, which attempts to describe the isomeric ratios with a single parameter relating to the angular momentum of the fragment. It is found that the model does not reliably reproduce isomeric ratios outside the few nuclei it was fitted to, and its simplified treatment of the statistical process following population in fission results in average spin values, which are neither constant nor follow a recently observed saw-tooth pattern.

The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) experiment is a balloon payload designed to measure low-energy cosmic antinuclei during at least three $\sim$35-day Antarctic flights, with the first flight planned for December, 2022. With its large geometric acceptance and novel exotic atom-based particle identification method, GAPS will detect $\sim$1000 antiprotons per flight, producing a precision cosmic antiproton spectrum in the kinetic energy range of $0.03 - 0.23$ GeV/$n$ at float altitude (corresponding to $0.085- 0.30$ GeV/$n$ at the top of the atmosphere). With these high statistics in a measurement extending to lower energy than any previous experiment, and with orthogonal sources of systematic uncertainty compared to measurements made using traditional magnetic spectrometer techniques, the GAPS antiproton measurement will be sensitive to physics including dark matter annihilation, primordial black hole evaporation, and cosmic ray propagation. The antiproton measurement will also validate the GAPS exotic atom technique for the antideuteron and antihelium rare-event searches and provide insight into models of cosmic particle attenuation and production in the atmosphere. This contribution demonstrates the GAPS sensitivity to antiprotons using a full instrument simulation, event reconstruction, and solar and atmospheric effects.

We present a compilation and evaluation of experimental β-delayed neutron emission probabilities (Pn) and half-lives (T1/2) for known or potential β-delayed neutron precursors with atomic number Z > 28 (73Cu–233Fr). This article includes the recommended values of both of these quantities, together with a compilation of experimental measurements when available. Some notable cases, as well as proposed standards for β-delayed neutron measurements are also discussed. Evaluated data has also been compared to systematics using three different approaches. The literature cut-off date for this work is August 15, 2020.

A well-established knowledge of nuclear phenomena including fission, reaction cross sections, and structure/decay properties is critical for applications ranging from the design of new reactors to nonproliferation to the production of radioisotopes for the diagnosis and treatment of illness. However, the lack of a well-quantified, predictive theoretical capability means that most nuclear observables must be measured directly and used to calibrate empirical models, which in turn provide the data needed for these applications. In many cases, either there is a lack of data needed to guide the models or the results of the different measurements are discrepant, leading to the development of evaluation methodologies to provide recommended values and uncertainties. In this review, we describe the nuclear data evaluation process and the international community that carries it out. We then discuss new measurements and improved theory and/or modeling needed to address future challenges in applied nuclear science.

This work is focused on the design and the experimental characterization of an analog channel developed for the readout of lithium-drifted silicon detectors of the General AntiParticle Spectrometer (GAPS) experiment aimed at the search for dark matter. The instrument is designed for the identification of antideuteron particles from cosmic rays during an Antarctic balloon mission scheduled for late 2022. A low-noise analog front-end, featuring a dynamic signal compression to comply with the wide input range, has been designed in commercial 180-nm CMOS technology. The channel was fabricated in 2018 and is the first building block toward the development of a multichannel readout ASIC. The article will provide a description of the design criteria, the architecture of the channel, and a summary of the results of the experimental characterization.

An emerging direction in nuclear medicine is the coupling of a therapeutic isotope with an imaging isotope to form a so-called theranostic pair, which allows one to quantitatively track and image the delivery of the therapeutic isotope. $^{90}\mathrm{Y}$ is used in several therapy applications and a convenient candidate imaging partner is the positron emitter $^{86}\mathrm{Y}$. A 27.6 MBq source of $^{86}\mathrm{Y}$ was produced at the University of Wisconsin and assayed with the Gammasphere array at Argonne National Laboratory. Over 200 $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions were identified, more than double that which was previously known. The positron emission probability inferred from the present level scheme leads to 27.9(12)%, an important $(\ensuremath{\approx}14%)$ reduction with respect to the previously recommended value.

This work is concerned with the characterization of a bandgap reference circuit, fabricated in a commercial 65 nm CMOS technology, designed for applications to HL-LHC experiments. Measurement results show a temperature coefficient of about 16 ppm/\(^\circ \)C over a temperature range of 140 \(^\circ \)C (from \(-40\) to 100 \(^\circ \)C) and a variation of 1.6% for V\(_{DD}\) from 1.08 to 1.32 V. The mean value of the bandgap output is about 400 mV, with a 5% maximum shift when exposed to a Total Ionizing Dose (TID) around 1 Grad (SiO\(_2\)). The power consumption is 165 \(\upmu \)W at room temperature, with a core area of 0.02835 mm\(^2\).

The disentanglement of each pair of β-decaying states was achieved by applying different strategies and using the purification capabilities of the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap system at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility in Jyväskylä. The Total Absorption γ-ray Spectroscopy technique was employed to determine the β intensity probabilities populating the excited states in the daughter nuclei. Previously undetected β intensity was found and we have already evaluated the impact of part of these results on reactor summation calculations. 12 pags., 6 figs., 3 tabs., In β-decay studies the determination of the decay probability to the ground state (g.s.) of the daughter nucleus often suffers from large systematic errors. The difficulty of the measurement is related to the absence of associated delayed γ -ray emission. In this work we revisit the 4π γ − β method proposed by Greenwood and collaborators in the 1990s, which has the potential to overcome some of the experimental difficulties. Our interest is driven by the need to determine accurately the β-intensity distributions of fission products that contribute significantly to the reactor decay heat and to the antineutrinos emitted by reactors. A number of such decays have large g.s. branches. The method is relevant for nuclear structure studies as well. Pertinent formulas are revised and extended to the special case of β-delayed neutron emitters, and the robustness of the method is demonstrated with synthetic data. We apply it to a number of measured decays that serve as test cases and discuss the features of the method. Electromagnetic quadrupole transition strength is a sensitive probe of the evolution of the structure of nuclei, particularly the competition between collectivity and magicity. We have performed a new lifetime measurement of the 2 1 + state of 12Be to study the interplay of these phenomena. The lifetime was measured with the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method using the γ-ray detector GRETINA. Excited states of 12Be were produced via inelastic scattering at 55 MeV/nucleon, using several different targets to control for systematic uncertainties in the stopping powers. The lifetime is determined to be τ = 1.38 ± 0.10 (stat) ± 0.19 (sys) ps, which is about half the previously reported value at twice the precision. The reduced transition strength deduced from this result is B ( E 2 ; 2 1 + → 0 1 + ) = 14.2 ± 1.0 (stat) ± 2.0 (sys) e 2 fm 4 , which supports the quenching of the N = 8 shell gap in 12Be.

Symmetric collisions of massive nuclei, such as 238U + 248Cm, have been proposed as ways to make new n-rich heavy nuclei via multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reactions. We have measured the yields of several projectile-like and target-like fragments from the reaction of 1360 MeV 204Hg + 198Pt. We find that current models for this symmetric collision (GRAZING, DNS, ImQMD) significantly underestimate the yields of these transfer products, even for small transfers. The decays of the β-delayed neutron emitters I137 and Rb95 have been studied with the total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy technique. The purity of the beams provided by the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the ion guide isotope separator on-line facility in Jyvaskyla allowed us to carry out a campaign of isotopically pure measurements with the decay total absorption γ-ray spectrometer, a segmented detector composed of 18 NaI(Tl) modules. The contamination coming from the interaction of neutrons with the spectrometer has been carefully studied, and we have tested the use of time differences between prompt γ rays and delayed neutron interactions to eliminate this source of contamination. Due to the sensitivity of our spectrometer, we have found a significant amount of β intensity to states above the neutron separation energy that deexcite by γ rays, comparable to the neutron emission probability. The competition between γ deexcitation and neutron emission has been compared with Hauser-Feshbach calculations, and it can be understood as a nuclear structure effect. In addition, we have studied the impact of the β-intensity distributions determined in this work on reactor decay heat and reactor antineutrino spectrum summation calculations. The robustness of our results is demonstrated by a thorough study of uncertainties and with the reproduction of the spectra of the individual modules and the module-multiplicity gated spectra. This work represents the state-of-the-art of our analysis methodology for segmented total absorption spectrometers.

International audience; A new database containing all available experimental and evaluated β-delayed neutron data is presented in this paper. The database is the product of an international effort coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency. It comprises a microscopic section including all available experimental data on beta-decay half-lives, β-delayed neutron emission probabilities and spectra, as well as new systematics and global theoretical calculations for comparison. The beta-delayed neutron data for individual precursors have been benchmarked against available data on macroscopic properties such as total delayed-neutron yields and spectra, delayed-neutron decay curves and time-dependent group parameters using the summation method. All available measured macroscopic data have also been compiled in the macroscopic section of the database. The dedicated database is available online on the IAEA server (URL:http://www-nds.iaea.org/beta-delayed-neutron/database.html).

Even mass neutron-rich niobium isotopes are among the principal contributors to the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum. They are also among the most challenging to measure due to the refractory nature of niobium, and because they exhibit isomeric states lying very close in energy. The beta-intensity distributions of Nb-100gs,Nb-100m and Nb-102gs,Nb-02m beta decays have been determined using the total absorption.-ray spectroscopy technique. The measurements were performed at the upgraded Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility at the University of Jyvaskyla. Here, the double Penning trap system JYFLTRAP was employed to disentangle the beta decay of the isomeric states. The new data obtained in this challenging measurement have a large impact in antineutrino summation calculations. For the first time the discrepancy between the summation model and the reactor antineutrino measurements in the region of the shape distortion has been reduced.

15 pags. 17 figs., 5 tabs., The β-intensity distributions of the decays of Nb100gs,100m and Nb102gs,102m have been determined using the total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy technique. The JYFLTRAP double Penning trap system was employed in a campaign of challenging measurements performed with the decay total absorption γ-ray spectrometer at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility in Jyväskylä. Different strategies were applied to disentangle the isomeric states involved, lying very close in energy. The low-spin component of each niobium case was populated through the decay of the zirconium parent, which was treated as a contaminant. We have applied a method to extract this contamination, and additionally we have obtained β-intensity distributions for these zirconium decays. The β-strength distributions evaluated with these results were compared with calculations in a quasiparticle random-phase approximation, suggesting a prolate configuration for the ground states of Zr100,102. The footprint of the Pandemonium effect was found when comparing our results for the analyses of the niobium isotopes with previous decay data. The β-intensities of the decay of Nb102m, for which there were no previous data, were obtained. A careful evaluation of the uncertainties was carried out, and the consistency of our results was validated taking advantage of the segmentation of our spectrometer. The final results were used as input in reactor summation calculations. Resume L’hypersensibilite aux faibles doses de radiations ionisantes (HFD) est un phenomene tres documente caracteristique d’un effet biologique non-lineairement lie a la dose ou a des evenements cellulaires ou moleculaires observes dans une gamme de faibles doses de radiation (generalement entre 1 mGy et 0,8 Gy) sont comparables a ceux observes pour des doses 5 a 50 fois plus fortes. Le phenomene HFD restait jusqu’a aujourd’hui sans explication mecanistique. Depuis 2003, nous avons accumule un grand nombre de cas de radiosensibilite individuelle d’origine genetique bien caracterisee ou revelee par des reactions tissulaires apres radiotherapie : apres une dose de 2 Gy (equivalent a une session de radiotherapie classique), nous avons mis en evidence que la proteine ATM transite du cytoplasme au noyau pour activer la reparation des cassures double-brin de l’ADN. Plus ce transit est efficace, plus la radioresistance est grande. Nous avons montre que le modele de transit d’ATM permet egalement d’expliquer le phenomene HFD, dont la prise en compte pourrait modifier l’estimation du risque lie aux faibles doses de radiation.

The Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) includes the most extensive and comprehensive set of nuclear structure and decay data evaluations performed by the international network of Nuclear Structure and Decay Data evaluators (NSDD) under the auspices of the IAEA. In this report we describe some of the recent NSDD activities and provide future perspectives., 評価済み核構造データファイル(Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File: ENSDF)は、原子核構造と崩壊に関する様々な実験データを全ての核種について集めて、それらの実験データの評価値を与えてある世界唯一のデータファイルである。ENSDFは定期的に更新されており、そのための評価作業は各国の評価者で分担している。評価作業を速やかに行うために、IAEAの援助の下に評価者の国際的なネットワークが組織されている。この発表では、ネットワークの最近の活動のうち、ENSDFの処理コードの開発、測定が必要とされているデータのリストの作成、インターネット版核図表の利用の拡充などについて報告する。また、核構造・崩壊データの需要が増大しているにもかかわらず、評価者が減っている問題についても述べる。

In these proceedings, we present new results from summation calculations of the first two quantities quoted above, performed with evolved independent yields coupled with fission product decay data, from various nuclear data bases or models. New TAGS results from the latest experiment of the TAGS collaboration at the JYFL facility of Jyväskylä will be displayed as well as their impact on the antineutrino spectra and the decay heat associated to fission pulses of the main actinides.

11 pags., 16 figs., 3 tabs., DTAS is a segmented total absorption γ-ray spectrometer developed for the DESPEC experiment at FAIR. It is composed of up to eighteen NaI(Tl) crystals. In this work we study the performance of this detector with laboratory sources and also under real experimental conditions. We present a procedure to reconstruct offline the sum of the energy deposited in all the crystals of the spectrometer, which is complicated by the effect of NaI(Tl) light-yield non-proportionality. The use of a system to correct for time variations of the gain in individual detector modules, based on a light pulse generator, is demonstrated. We describe also an event-based method to evaluate the summing-pileup electronic distortion in segmented spectrometers. All of this allows a careful characterization of the detector with Monte Carlo simulations that is needed to calculate the response function for the analysis of total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy data. We calculate the Inverse Beta Decay (IBD) antineutrino spectrum generated by nuclear reactors using the summation method to understand deviations from the smooth Huber-Mueller model due to the decay of individual fission products, showing that plotting the ratio of two adjacent spectra points can effectively reveal these deviations. We obtained that for binning energies of 0.1 MeV or lower, abrupt changes in the spectra due to the jagged nature of the individual antineutrino spectra could be observed for highly precise experiments. Surprisingly, our calculations also reveal a peak-like feature in the adjacent points ratio plot at 4.5 MeV even with a 0.25 MeV binning interval, which we find is present in the IBD Daya Bay spectrum published in 2016. We show that this 4.5 MeV feature is caused by the contributions of just four fission products, 95Y, 98,101N and 102Tc. This would be the first evidence of the decay of a few fission products in the IBD antineutrino spectrum from a nuclear reactor., 5 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the recent Daya Bay results on the changes in the antineutrino flux and spectrum with the burnup of the reactor fuel. We find that the discrepancy between current model predictions and the Daya Bay results can be traced to the original measured $^{235}$U/$^{239}$Pu ratio of the fission beta spectra that were used as a base for the expected antineutrino fluxes. An analysis of the antineutrino spectra that is based on a summation over all fission fragment beta-decays, using nuclear database input, explains all of the features seen in the Daya Bay evolution data. However, this summation method still predicts an anomaly. Thus, we conclude that there is currently not enough information to use the antineutrino flux changes to rule out the possible existence of sterile neutrinos.

We describe the new ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluated nuclear reaction data library. ENDF/B-VIII.0 fully incorporates the new IAEA standards, includes improved thermal neutron scattering data and uses new evaluated data from the CIELO project for neutron reactions on 1H, 16O, 56Fe, 235U, 238U and 239Pu described in companion papers in the present issue of Nuclear Data Sheets. The evaluations benefit from recent experimental data obtained in the U.S. and Europe, and improvements in theory and simulation. Notable advances include updated evaluated data for light nuclei, structural materials, actinides, fission energy release, prompt fission neutron and γ-ray spectra, thermal neutron scattering data, and charged-particle reactions. Integral validation testing is shown for a wide range of criticality, reaction rate, and neutron transmission benchmarks. We present an evaluation and compilation of β -delayed neutron probabilities and half-lives for nuclei in the region Z = 2–28 ( 8 He– 80 Ni). This article includes the recommended values of these quantities as well as a compiled list of experimental measurements for each nucleus in the region for which β -delayed neutron emission is possible. The literature cut-off for this work is August 15 th , 2015. Some notable cases as well as new standards for β -delayed neutron measurements in this mass region are also discussed.

Current predictions for the antineutrino yield and spectra from a nuclear reactor rely on the experimental electron spectra from ^{235}U, ^{239}Pu, ^{241}Pu and a numerical method to convert these aggregate electron spectra into their corresponding antineutrino ones. In the present work we investigate quantitatively some of the basic assumptions and approximations used in the conversion method, studying first the compatibility between two recent approaches for calculating electron and antineutrino spectra. We then explore different possibilities for the disagreement between the measured Daya Bay and the Huber-Mueller antineutrino spectra, including the ^{238}U contribution as well as the effective charge and the allowed shape assumption used in the conversion method. We observe that including a shape correction of about +6% MeV^{-1} in conversion calculations can better describe the Daya Bay spectrum. Because of a lack of experimental data, this correction cannot be ruled out, concluding that in order to confirm the existence of the reactor neutrino anomaly, or even quantify it, precisely measured electron spectra for about 50 relevant fission products are needed. With the advent of new rare ion facilities, the measurement of shape factors for these nuclides, for many of which precise beta intensity data from TAGS experiments already exist, would be highly desirable.

The beta decay of Tc-100 has been studied by using the total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy technique at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility in Jyvaskyla. In this work the new Decay Total Absorption gamma-ray Spectrometer in coincidence with a cylindrical plastic beta detector has been employed. The beta intensity to the ground state obtained from the analysis is in good agreement with previous high-resolution measurements. However, differences in the feeding to the first-excited state as well as weak feeding to a new level at high excitation energy have been deduced from this experiment. Theoretical calculations performed in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation framework are also reported. Comparison of these calculations with our measurement serves as a benchmark for calculations of the double beta decay of Mo-100.

The beta decays of 86Br and 91Rb have been studied using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. The radioactive nuclei were produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyvaskyla and further purified using the JYFLTRAP. 86Br and 91Rb are considered high priority contributors to the decay heat in reactors. In addition 91Rb was used as a normalization point in direct measurements of mean gamma energies released in the beta decay of fission products by Rudstam et al. assuming that this decay was well known from high-resolution measurements. Our results shows that both decays were suffering from the Pandemonium effect and that the results of Rudstam et al. should be renormalized.

The Workshop on Nuclear Data Needs and Capabilities for Basic Science was held at the University of Notre Dame on 10-11 August 2016. The purpose of this targeted workshop was to assemble and prioritize the needs of the nuclear physics research community for data sets, services and capabilities in areas including nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, neutrino physics and nuclear theory. An overview of nuclear data needs and capabilities identified at this meeting are summarized in the present document.

International audience; Total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy is used to measure accurately the intensity of γ emission from neutron-unbound states populated in the β-decay of delayed-neutron emitters. From the comparison of this intensity with the intensity of neutron emission a constraint on the (n, γ) cross section for highly unstable neutron-rich nuclei can be deduced. A surprisingly large γ branching was observed for a number of isotopes which might indicate the need to increase by a large factor the Hauser-Feshbach (n, γ) cross-section estimates that impact on r process abundance calculations.

We investigate the decay of 87,88Br and 94Rb using total absorption γ -ray spectroscopy. These important fission products are β-delayed neutron emitters. Our data show considerable βγ intensity, so far unobserved in high-resolution γ -ray spectroscopy, from states at high excitation energy. We also find significant differences with the β intensity that can be deduced from existing measurements of the β spectrum. We evaluate the impact of the present data on reactor decay heat using summation calculations. Although the effect is relatively small it helps to reduce the discrepancy between calculations and integral measurements of the photon component for 235U fission at cooling times in the range 1–100 s. We also use summation calculations to evaluate the impact of present data on reactor antineutrino spectra. We find a significant effect at antineutrino energies in the range of 5 to 9 MeV. In addition, we observe an unexpected strong probability for γ emission from neutron unbound states populated in the daughter nucleus. The γ branching is compared to Hauser-Feshbach calculations, which allow one to explain the large value for bromine isotopes as due to nuclear structure. However the branching for 94Rb, although much smaller, hints of the need to increase the radiative width γ by one order of magnitude. This increase in γ would lead to a similar increase in the calculated (n,γ ) cross section for this very neutron-rich nucleus with a potential impact on r process abundance calculations.

States in $^{209}\mathrm{Tl}$ were populated using a multinucleon transfer reaction with a $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$ beam impinging on a thick $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ target at $E=785$ MeV. The beam was pulsed at 825-ns intervals in order to perform isomer decay spectroscopy. The known ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=17/{2}^{+}$ isomer in $^{209}\mathrm{Tl}$ was located at 1228(4) keV and measured to have a half-life of ${T}_{1/2}=146(10)$ ns. A second isomer with ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=13/{2}^{+}$ was found to have ${T}_{1/2}=14(5)$ ns. The previously suggested low-energy X and Y transitions were found to have energies 57(2) and 47(2) keV respectively, while the measurement of conversion coefficients and a new decay path make the spin assignments below the isomers experimentally firm. Correlating the delayed $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transitions with the prompt beam flash allowed the decay of states above the isomer to be found. The longer-lived isomer represents full alignment of the simplest two-particle, one-hole configuration and illuminates the remarkably weak coupling of the proton hole to the $^{210}\mathrm{Pb}$ core.

Preliminary results from beta decay studies of nuclei that are important for reactor applications are presented. The beta decays have been studied using the total absorption technique (TAS) and the pure beams provided by the JYFLTRAP system at the IGISOL facility of the University of Jyväskylä. peerReviewed

Beta decays of mass A = 142 isobaric chain starting from 142 Cs have been investigated by means of Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) and on-line mass separation at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The beta strength distribution derived for 142 Cs decay from MTAS spectra is showing significant differences in β-feeding pattern when compared to the values listed at nuclear databases. MTAS results are shifting the associated anti-neutrino energy spectrum towards lower energies. A decay pattern deduced for 142 Ba is similar to earlier reported results.
