Search

X-pinches, formed by driving intense current through the crossing of 2 or more wires, provide an excellent platform for the study of "micro-pinches" due to their propensity to generate a single micro-pinch at a predetermined location in space (i.e., where the wires cross) [1] , [2] . Ideally, micropinches are areas of run-away compression to very small radii (~1 µm) leading to pressures on the order of ~1 Gbar for currents on the order of ~0.1 MA. However, the fraction of the total current that is driven through the dense micro-pinch plasma at small radii versus that being shunted through the surrounding coronal plasma at larger radii is not well known. To allow for the study of micro-pinches and their current distribution on the 1-MA MAIZE facility, a Faraday rotation imaging diagnostic (1064 nm) [3] , as well as a corresponding modular X-pinch load hardware, were developed. Presented is the status of these developments including preliminary experimental results characterizing X-pinches on the MAIZE LTD.

We report on a recently developed laser-probing diagnostic which allows direct measurements of ray-deflection angles in one axis, whilst retaining imaging capabilities in the other axis. This allows us to measure the spectrum of angular deflections from a laser beam which passes though a turbulent high-energy-density plasma. This spectrum contains information about the density fluctuations within the plasma, which deflect the probing laser over a range of angles. %The principle of this diagnostic is described, along with our specific experimental realisation. We create synthetic diagnostics using ray-tracing to compare this new diagnostic with standard shadowgraphy and schlieren imaging approaches, which demonstrates the enhanced sensitivity of this new diagnostic over standard techniques. We present experimental data from turbulence behind a reverse shock in a plasma and demonstrate that this technique can measure angular deflections between 0.06 and 34 mrad, corresponding to a dynamic range of over 500., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Collisional self-interactions occurring in protostellar jets give rise to strong shocks, the structure of which can be affected by radiative cooling within the flow. To study such colliding flows, we use the AstroBEAR AMR code to conduct hydrodynamic simulations in both one and three dimensions with a power law cooling function. The characteristic length and time scales for cooling are temperature dependent and thus may vary as shocked gas cools. When the cooling length decreases sufficiently rapidly the system becomes unstable to the radiative shock instability, which produces oscillations in the position of the shock front; these oscillations can be seen in both the one and three dimensional cases. Our simulations show no evidence of the density clumping characteristic of a thermal instability, even when the cooling function meets the expected criteria. In the three-dimensional case, the nonlinear thin shell instability (NTSI) is found to dominate when the cooling length is sufficiently small. When the flows are subjected to the radiative shock instability, oscillations in the size of the cooling region allow NTSI to occur at larger cooling lengths, though larger cooling lengths delay the onset of NTSI by increasing the oscillation period., Comment: 12 pages, 21 figures. Magnetic reconnection is a process that contributes significantly to plasma dynamics and energy transfer in a wide range of plasma and magnetic field regimes, including inertial confinement fusion experiments, stellar coronae, and compact, highly magnetized objects like neutron stars. Laboratory experiments in different regimes can help refine, expand, and test the applicability of theoretical models to describe reconnection. Laser-plasma experiments exploring magnetic reconnection at a moderate intensity (IL ∼1014 W cm-2) have been performed previously, where the Biermann battery effect self-generates magnetic fields and the field dynamics studied using proton radiography. At high laser intensities (ILλL2>1018 Wcm-2μm2), relativistic surface currents and the time-varying electric sheath fields generate the azimuthal magnetic fields. Numerical modeling of these intensities has shown the conditions that within the magnetic field region can reach the threshold where the magnetic energy can exceed the rest mass energy such that σcold = B2/(μ0nemec2) > 1 [A. E. Raymond et al., Phys. Rev. E 98, 043207 (2018)]. Presented here is the analysis of the proton radiography of a high-intensity (∼1018 W cm-2) laser driven magnetic reconnection geometry. The path integrated magnetic fields are recovered using a "field-reconstruction algorithm" to quantify the field strengths, geometry, and evolution.

We present experimental measurements of a pulsed plasma gun, using two-colour imaging laser interferometry and spatially resolved Thomson scattering. Interferometry measurements give an electron density $n_e\approx2.7\times10^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$ at the centre of the plasma plume, at 5 mm from the plasma gun nozzle. The Thomson scattered light is collected from two probing angles allowed us to simultaneously measure the collective and non-collective spectrum of the electron feature from the same spatial locations. The inferred electron densities from the location of the electron plasma waves is in agreement with interferometry. The electron temperatures inferred from the two spectra are not consistent, with $T_e\approx 10$ eV for non-collective scattering and $T_e\approx 30$ eV for collective scattering. We discuss various broadening mechanisms such as finite aperture effects, density gradients within the collective volume and collisional broadening to account for some of this discrepancy. We also note the significant red/blue asymmetry of the electron plasma waves in the collective scattering spectra, which could relate to kinetic effects distorting the distribution function of the electrons., 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication by PPCF

This paper describes a model of electron energization and cyclotron-maser emission applicable to astrophysical magnetized collisionless shocks. It is motivated by the work of Begelman, Ergun and Rees [Astrophys. J. 625, 51 (2005)] who argued that the cyclotron-maser instability occurs in localized magnetized collisionless shocks such as those expected in blazar jets. We report on recent research carried out to investigate electron acceleration at collisionless shocks and maser radiation associated with the accelerated electrons. We describe how electrons accelerated by lower-hybrid waves at collisionless shocks generate cyclotron-maser radiation when the accelerated electrons move into regions of stronger magnetic fields. The electrons are accelerated along the magnetic field and magnetically compressed leading to the formation of an electron velocity distribution having a horseshoe shape due to conservation of the electron magnetic moment. Under certain conditions the horseshoe electron velocity distribution function is unstable to the cyclotron-maser instability [Bingham and Cairns, Phys. Plasmas 7, 3089 (2000); Melrose, Rev. Mod. Plasma Phys. 1, 5 (2017)].

A supersonic flow of magnetized plasma is produced by the application of a 1 MA-peak, 500 ns current pulse to a cylindrical arrangement of parallel wires, known as an inverse wire array. The plasma flow is produced by the J × B acceleration of the ablated wire material, and a magnetic field of several Tesla is embedded at source by the driving current. This setup has been used for a variety of experiments investigating the interactions of magnetized plasma flows. In experiments designed to investigate magnetic reconnection, the collision of counter-streaming flows, carrying oppositely directed magnetic fields, leads to the formation of a reconnection layer in which we observe ions reaching temperatures much greater than predicted by classical heating mechanisms. The breakup of this layer under the plasmoid instability is dependent on the properties of the inflowing plasma, which can be controlled by the choice of the wire array material. In other experiments, magnetized shocks were formed by placing obstacles in the path of the magnetized plasma flow. The pile-up of magnetic flux in front of a conducting obstacle produces a magnetic precursor acting on upstream electrons at the distance of the ion inertial length. This precursor subsequently develops into a steep density transition via ion-electron fluid decoupling. Obstacles which possess a strong private magnetic field affect the upstream flow over a much greater distance, providing an extended bow shock structure. Optical collective Thomson scattering (TS) is used to diagnose magnetized high energy density physics experiments at the Magpie pulsed-power generator at Imperial College London. The system uses an amplified pulse from the second harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser (3 J, 8 ns, 532 nm) to probe a wide diversity of high-temperature plasma objects, with densities in the range of 1017–1019 cm−3 and temperatures between 10 eV and a few keV. The scattered light is collected from 100 μm-scale volumes within the plasmas, which are imaged onto optical fiber arrays. Multiple collection systems observe these volumes from different directions, providing simultaneous probing with different scattering K-vectors (and different associated α-parameters, typically in the range of 0.5–3), allowing independent measurements of separate velocity components of the bulk plasma flow. The fiber arrays are coupled to an imaging spectrometer with a gated intensified charge coupled device. The spectrometer is configured to view the ion-acoustic waves of the collective Thomson scattered spectrum. Fits to the spectra with the theoretical spectral density function S(K, ω) yield measurements of the local plasma temperatures and velocities. Fitting is constrained by independent measurements of the electron density from laser interferometry and the corresponding spectra for different scattering vectors. This TS diagnostic has been successfully implemented on a wide range of experiments, revealing temperature and flow velocity transitions across magnetized shocks, inside rotating plasma jets and imploding wire arrays, as well as providing direct measurements of drift velocities inside a magnetic reconnection current sheet.

We present a new experimental platform for studying radiative shocks using an ``inverse liner z-pinch'' configuration. This platform was tested on the MAGPIE pulsed power facility (~1 MA with a rise time of ~240 ns) at Imperial College London, U.K. Current is discharged through a thin-walled metal tube (a liner) embedded in a low-density gas-fill and returned through a central post. The resulting magnetic pressure inside the liner launched a cylindrically symmetric, expanding radiative shock into the gas-fill at ~10 km/s. This experimental platform provides good diagnostic access, allowing multiframe optical self-emission imaging, laser interferometry, and optical emission spectrography to be fielded. Results from experiments with an Argon gas-fill initially at 0.04 mg/cm³are presented, demonstrating the successful production of cylindrically symmetric, expanding shocks that exhibit radiative effects such as the formation of a radiative precursor.

Astrophysical shocks are commonly revealed by the non-thermal emission of energetic electrons accelerated in situ1–3. Strong shocks are expected to accelerate particles to very high energies4–6; however, they require a source of particles with velocities fast enough to permit multiple shock crossings. While the resulting diffusive shock acceleration 4 process can account for observations, the kinetic physics regulating the continuous injection of non-thermal particles is not well understood. Indeed, this injection problem is particularly acute for electrons, which rely on high-frequency plasma fluctuations to raise them above the thermal pool7,8. Here we show, using laboratory laser-produced shock experiments, that, in the presence of a strong magnetic field, significant electron pre-heating is achieved. We demonstrate that the key mechanism in producing these energetic electrons is through the generation of lower-hybrid turbulence via shock-reflected ions. Our experimental results are analogous to many astrophysical systems, including the interaction of a comet with the solar wind 9 , a setting where electron acceleration via lower-hybrid waves is possible. Electrons can be accelerated by astrophysical shocks if they are sufficiently fast to start with. As laboratory laser-produced shock experiments reveal, this can be achieved by lower-hybrid waves generated by a shock-reflected ion instability.

This work presents a magnetic reconnection experiment in which the kinetic, magnetic, and thermal properties of the plasma each play an important role in the overall energy balance and structure of the generated reconnection layer. Magnetic reconnection occurs during the interaction of continuous and steady flows of super-Alfvénic, magnetized, aluminum plasma, which collide in a geometry with two-dimensional symmetry, producing a stable and long-lasting reconnection layer. Optical Thomson scattering measurements show that when the layer forms, ions inside the layer are more strongly heated than electrons, reaching temperatures of T [subscript]i ∼ Z T [subscript]e ≳ 300 eV--much greater than can be expected from strong shock and viscous heating alone. Later in time, as the plasma density in the layer increases, the electron and ion temperatures are found to equilibrate, and a constant plasma temperature is achieved through a balance of the heating mechanisms and radiative losses of the plasma. Measurements from Faraday rotation polarimetry also indicate the presence of significant magnetic field pile-up occurring at the boundary of the reconnection region, which is consistent with the super-Alfvénic velocity of the inflows. ©2018, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (Grant no. Radial wire array $Z$ -pinches, where wires are positioned radially outward from a central cathode to a concentric anode, can act as a compact bright X-ray source that could potentially be used to drive a hohlraum. Experiments were performed on the 7-MA Saturn generator using radial wire arrays. These experiments studied a number of potential risks in scaling radial wire arrays up from the 1-MA level, where they have been shown to be a promising compact X-ray source. Data indicate that at 7 MA, radial wire arrays can radiate $\sim 9$ TW with 10-ns full-width at half-maximum from a compact pinch.

We present an experimental study of the development and structure of bow shocks produced by the interaction of a magnetised, collisional, super-Alfvénic plasma flow with conducting cylindrical obstacles. The plasma flow with an embedded, frozen-in magnetic field (ReM ∼ 20) is produced by the current-driven ablation of fine aluminium wires in an inverse, exploding wire array z-pinch. We show that the orientation of the embedded field with respect to the obstacles has a dramatic effect on the bow shock structure. When the field is aligned with the obstacle, a sharp bow shock is formed with a global structure that is determined simply by the fast magneto-sonic Mach number. When the field is orthogonal to the obstacle, magnetic draping occurs. This leads to the growth of a magnetic precursor and the subsequent development of a magnetised bow shock that is mediated by two-fluid effects, with an opening angle and a stand-off distance, that are both many times larger than in the parallel geometry. By changing the field orientation, we change the fluid regime and physical mechanisms that are responsible for the development of the bow shocks. MHD simulations show good agreement with the structure of well-developed bow shocks. However, collisionless, two-fluid effects will need to be included within models to accurately reproduce the development of the shock with an orthogonal B-field.

We report on simulations of laboratory experiments in which magnetized supersonic flows are driven through a wire mesh. The goal of the study was to investigate the ability of such a configuration to generate supersonic, MHD turbulence. We first report on the morphological structures that develop in both magnetized and non-magnetized cases. We then analyze the flow using a variety of statistical measures, including power spectra and probability distribution functions of the density. Using these results we estimate the sonic mach number in the flows downstream of the wire mesh. We find the initially hypersonic (M=20) planar shock through the wire mesh does lead to downstream turbulent conditions. However, in both magnetized and non-magnetized cases, the resultant turbulence was marginally supersonic to transonic (M~1), and highly anisotropic in structure., Accepted to High Energy Density Physics, in press, 10 pages, 7 figures

In this contribution we present new simulations of colliding flows relevant to star formation studies which may also be relevant to future HEDLA experiments. We first discuss AstroBEAR a multi-physics MHD AMR code whose functionality and parallel performance make it a highly useful tool for star formation studies. We then present the results of two simulations of colliding flows that only differed with regards to the degree of inhomogeneity. One flow was completely uniform (Smooth), while the other contained many small over-densities in a lighter background (Clumpy) though with the same mean density, mass flux, & ram pressure. Despite these similarities, the two runs differed significantly with regards to their overall evolution, mixing, and core formation. The Smooth run formed cores early on throughout the cloud – while the inhomogeneities present in the Clumpy run drove a higher degree of small scale turbulence which seemed able to prevent local collapse. The Clumpy run did form cores but only after global collapse had ensued at around 20 Myr. The Smooth run managed to avoid global collapse for the duration of the simulation due to the increased splashing of material radially outwards as well as the higher pressure of the incoming material due to the details of the heating/cooling curve. In the final section we comment on possible applications of these studies to future HEDLA experiments. We conclude that key aspects of the flow evolution before gravitational collapse sets in may be amenable to laboratory studies.

The aim of this work is to produce and study a high energy density laboratory plasma relevant to astrophysical accretion disks. To this end, an experimental setup based on a modified cylindrical wire array was devised, which employs a cusp magnetic field to introduce angular momentum into the system. The setup was studied numerically with the three-dimensional, resistive magneto-hydrodynamic code GORGON. Simulations show that a differentially-rotating flow is formed, with typical rotation velocity and Mach number values of 60 km/s and Mφ ∼ 5 respectively. The plasma is radiatively cooled and presents a Reynolds number higher than 107. In addition, the magnetic Reynolds number and the plasma β are >1. Such a plasma is of interest for the study of hydrodynamic and magneto-hydrodynamic instabilities, and turbulence generation in differentially-rotating plasma flows.

We present data from experiments using nested wire-array Z -pinches where the wires of one of the arrays (the outer or inner array) are inclined to produce a cone. The use of these nested conical arrays can potentially provide a valuable tool in X-ray radiation pulse shaping for Z-pinch-driven high-yield inertial-confinement-fusion schemes. Conical nested arrays can produce a zippered implosion which broadens the main radiation pulse and, possibly, the pulse associated with the interaction of the two arrays. Results from experiments at current levels of 1 MA (240 ns) and 18 MA (100 ns) are presented and compared. Experiments at 1 MA with a conical outer array indicate broadening of the full-width at half-maximum of the main stagnation radiation pulse, with results at 20 MA showing a similar result. Conical inner arrays do not broaden the main radiation pulse because a longer inner array ablation time offsets the earlier interaction time of the outer array with the inner array. Although array dynamics data suggest that a conical inner or outer array can potentially provide control of the interaction radiation pulse, this was not observed. Observations are consistent with a wire-array trajectory model incorporating outer and inner array ablation, snowplow physics, and a simplified array interaction model.

Possibility of preconditioning of wires in wire array Z-pinch loads by an auxiliary low-level current pulse was investigated in experiments with two aluminum or two polyimide-coated tungsten wires. It was found that the application of a 1 kA, 10 ns current pulse could convert all the length of the Al wires (1 cm long, 15 μm diameter) and ∼70% of length of the W wires (1 cm long, 15 μm diameter, 2 μm polyimide coating) into a gaseous state via ohmic heating. The expansion and merging of the wires, positioned at separations of 1–3 mm, were investigated with two-wavelength (532 nm and 1064 nm) laser interferometry. The gasified wire expanded freely in a vacuum and its density distribution at different times could be well described using an analytic model for the expansion of the gas into vacuum. Under an energy deposition around its atomization enthalpy of the wire material, the aluminum vapor column had an expansion velocity of 5–7 km/s, larger than the value of ∼4 km/s from tungsten wires. The dynamic atomic polarizabilities of tungsten for 532 nm and 1064 nm were also estimated.

We present a detailed study of magnetic reconnection in a quasi-two-dimensional pulsed-power driven laboratory experiment. Oppositely directed magnetic fields $(B=3$ T), advected by supersonic, sub-Alfv\'enic carbon plasma flows $(V_{in}=50$ km/s), are brought together and mutually annihilate inside a thin current layer ($\delta=0.6$ mm). Temporally and spatially resolved optical diagnostics, including interferometry, Faraday rotation imaging and Thomson scattering, allow us to determine the structure and dynamics of this layer, the nature of the inflows and outflows and the detailed energy partition during the reconnection process. We measure high electron and ion temperatures $(T_e=100$ eV, $T_i=600$ eV), far in excess of what can be attributed to classical (Spitzer) resistive and viscous dissipation. We observe the repeated formation and ejection of plasmoids, which we interpret as evidence of two-fluid effects in our experiment., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRL, expected 17th Febuary 2017. 6 pages, 5 figures

A two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic simulation incorporating cold start conditions is used to explain the early phase of carbon fiber Z-pinch experiments. The rapid development of large scale, nonlinear m=0 perturbations in the plasma corona is reproduced. X-ray bright spot formation in the necks of the instability is followed by bright spot bifurcation and fast axial motion. Bright spot bifurcation is found to be due to axial components of the j×B force and occurs off-axis due to the presence of a residual core of unionized carbon. Artificial diagnostic images are generated from the simulations data to allow direct comparison with experimental x-ray imaging and laser probing diagnostics. The accurate reproduction of the experimental images provides confirmation that the experimentally observed features are a repercussion of the non-linear development of the m=0 instability in an ionizing medium.

We present results from magnetised bow shock experiments performed on the Magpie (∼1 MA, 250 ns) pulsed-power facility. Bow shocks are formed around cylindrical conducting obstacles (diameter ∼0.5 mm) positioned in a supersonic, super-Alfenic, plasma flow (MS > 3, MA > 2.5, Vflow ∼70 km/s). This radially diverging flow is produced by an exploding wire array z-pinch, and carries an embedded azimuthal magnetic field provided by the driving current. The bow shock structure is dramatically affected by the orientation of the obstacle with respect to the advected field. When the field lines are aligned parallel to the obstacle, the bow shock structure resembles that of a hydrodynamic bow shock. However, when the field lines lie perpendicular to the obstacle, we observe an additional bow-shaped sub-shock. This sub-shock has a large opening angle and a large stand-off distance (∼1.5 mm) that is several times the obstacle radius. This sub-shock is mediated by a pileup and bending of magnetic field lines about the conducting obstacle, and appears to form indirectly via the preferential stopping of magnetised electrons in the region where the magnetic field piles up.

The use of plasma flows generated by pulsed power facilities provides a natural platform for designing magnetized HEDLA experiments. The plasma in this case is created and accelerated by the JxB force of the driving, ∼Mega-Ampere level currents, forming plasma flows with embedded, frozen-in magnetic fields. Here we present several recent experiments performed on the MAGPIE pulsed power facility, focusing on studies of magnetic reconnection in colliding high beta plasmas, the structure of magnetized bow-shocks and the dynamics of magnetized plasma jets. The relatively large spatial and temporal scales characterizing this experimental platform, together with an excellent diagnostic access, allow detailed characterization of the key plasma parameters and quantitative comparison of the experimental results with numerical simulations.

We present experiments characterizing the detailed structure of a current layer, generated by the collision of two counterstreaming, supersonic and magnetized aluminum plasma flows. The antiparallel magnetic fields advected by the flows are found to be mutually annihilated inside the layer, giving rise to a bifurcated current structure-two narrow current sheets running along the outside surfaces of the layer. Measurements with Thomson scattering show a fast outflow of plasma along the layer and a high ion temperature (T_{i}∼Z[over ¯]T_{e}, with average ionization Z[over ¯]=7). Analysis of the spatially resolved plasma parameters indicates that the advection and subsequent annihilation of the inflowing magnetic flux determines the structure of the layer, while the ion heating could be due to the development of kinetic, current-driven instabilities.

High resolution observations of Young Stellar Object (YSO) jets show them to be composed of many small-scale knots or clumps. In this paper we report results of 3-D numerical simulations designed to study how such clumps interact and create morphologies and kinematic patterns seen in emission line observations. Our simulations focus on clump scale dynamics by imposing velocity differences between spherical, over-dense regions which then lead to the formation of bow shocks as faster clumps overtake slower material. We show that much of the spatial structure apparent in emission line images of jets arises from the dynamics and interactions of these bow shocks. Our simulations show a variety of time-dependent features, including bright knots associated with Mach stems where the shocks intersect, a "frothy" emission structure that arises from the presence of the Non-linear Thin Shell Instability (NTSI) along the surfaces of the bow shocks, and the merging and fragmentation of clumps. Our simulations use a new non-equilibrium cooling method to produce synthetic emission maps in H$\alpha$ and [S II]. These are directly compared with multi-epoch Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of Herbig-Haro (HH) jets. We find excellent agreement between features seen in the simulations and the observations in terms of both proper motion and morphologies. Thus we conclude that YSO jets may be dominated by heterogeneous structures and that interactions between these structures and the shocks they produce can account for many details of YSO jet evolution., Comment: 18 figures

Properties of radiatively cooled supersonic plasma jets formed by ablation of thin Al foils driven by 1.4 MA, 250 ns current pulse are presented. The jets are highly collimated with half-opening angles of ~2°. Measurements of the flow velocity (~60 km/s) and plasma temperature (~15 eV) in the jet with Thomson scattering diagnostic give internal Mach number of M ~ 3, suggesting additional collimation of the jet by toroidal magnetic fields.

The formation of supersonic, radiatively cooled plasma jets with applications to laboratory astrophysics has been an active area of research on the MAGPIE generator. One of the ways of producing astrophysically-relevant jets in the laboratory is by using the ablation of plasma from a radial foil Z-pinch. In this configuration a ∼1.4 MA, 250 ns current pulse is introduced into an aluminium disk with a thick- ness of 15 µm. The ablated plasma from the foil converges on the axis, producing a steady and collimated jet with a typical axial veloc- ity of ∼100 km/s. The setup allows for the addition of argon above the foil for jet-ambient interaction studies. The interaction is charac- terised by the formation of several shock features, which are presented and discussed from experimental data and numerical simulations.

In the context of high energy density laboratory astrophysics, we aim to produce and study a rotating plasma relevant to accretion discs physics. We devised an experimental setup based on a modified cylindrical wire array and we studied it numerically with the three-dimensional, resistive magneto-hydrodynamic code GORGON. The simulations show that a rotating plasma cylinder is formed, with typical rotation velocity ~35 km/s and Mach number ~5. In addition, the plasma ring is differentially rotating and strongly radiatively cooled. The introduction of external magnetic fields is discussed.

We present data from the first Z-pinch experiments aiming to simulate aspects of accretion disk physics in the laboratory. Using off axis ablation flows from a wire array z-pinch we demonstrate the formation of a supersonically (M ∼ 2) rotating hollow plasma cylinder of height ∼4 mm and radius 2 mm. Using a combination of diagnostics we measure the rotation speed (∼60 kms−1), electron density (1019 cm−3), ion temperature (Ti ∼ 60 eV) and the product of electron temperature and average ionisation (ZTe ∼ 150 to 200 eV). Using these parameters we calculate the Reynolds number for the plasma on the order 105 and magnetic Reynolds number as 10 – 100. The plasma flow is maintained for 150 ns, corresponding to one rotation period, which should allow for studying fast instabilities which develop on this time-scale.

Coiled arrays, which are cylindrical arrays in which each wire is formed into a helix, suppress the modulation of ablation at the fundamental wavelength. Outside the vicinity of the wire cores, ablation flow from coiled arrays is modulated at the coil wavelength and has a two-stream structure in the r, thetas plane. Within the vicinity of the helical wires, ablation is concentrated at positions with the greatest azimuthal displacement, and plasma is axially transported from these positions such that the streams become aligned with the sections of the coil furthest from the array axis. The GORGON MHD code accurately reproduces this observed ablation structure, which can be understood in terms of J times B forces that result from the interaction of the global magnetic field with a helical current path as well as additional current paths suggested by the simulations. With this ability to control where the ablation streamers occur, large wavelength coils were constructed such that the breaks that form in the wires had sufficient axial separation to prevent perturbations in the implosion sheath from merging. This produced a new mode of implosion in which the global instability can be controlled, and perturbations correlated between all wires in an array. For large-wavelength eight-wire coiled arrays, this produced a dramatic increase in X-ray power, equaling that of a 32-wire straight array. Herbig-Haro jets often show some degree of curvature along their path, in many cases produced by the ram pressure of a side-wind. We present simulations of both laboratory and astrophysical curved jets and experimental results from laboratory experiments. We discuss the properties and similarities of the laboratory and astrophysical flow, which show the formation of internal shocks and working surfaces. In particular the results illustrate how the break-up of the bow-shock and clumps in the flow are produced without invoking jet variability; we also discuss how jet rotation reduces the growth of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in curved jets., 15 pages, 5 figure, accepted to be published in The Astrophysical Journal

In this paper, we describe the operation of a two-stage wire array z-pinch driven by the 1.4 MA, 240 ns rise-time Magpie pulsed-power device at Imperial College London. In this setup, an inverse wire array acts as a fast current switch, delivering a current pre-pulse into a cylindrical load wire array, before rapidly switching the majority of the generator current into the load after a 100–150 ns dwell time. A detailed analysis of the evolution of the load array during the pre-pulse is presented. Measurements of the load resistivity and energy deposition suggest significant bulk heating of the array mass occurs. The ∼5 kA pre-pulse delivers ∼0.8 J of energy to the load, leaving it in a mixed, predominantly liquid-vapour state. The main current switch occurs as the inverse array begins to explode and plasma expands into the load region. Electrical and imaging diagnostics indicate that the main current switch may evolve in part as a plasma flow switch, driven by the expansion of a magnetic cavity and plasma bubble along the length of the load array. Analysis of implosion trajectories suggests that approximately 1 MA switches into the load in 100 ns, corresponding to a doubling of the generator dI/dt. Potential scaling of the device to higher current machines is discussed.

The role of radiative cooling during the evolution of a bow shock was studied in laboratory-astrophysics experiments that are scalable to bow shocks present in jets from young stellar objects. The laboratory bow shock is formed during the collision of two counter-streaming, supersonic plasma jets produced by an opposing pair of radial foil Z-pinches driven by the current pulse from the MAGPIE pulsed-power generator. The jets have different flow velocities in the laboratory frame and the experiments are driven over many times the characteristic cooling time-scale. The initially smooth bow shock rapidly develops small-scale non-uniformities over temporal and spatial scales that are consistent with a thermal instability triggered by strong radiative cooling in the shock. The growth of these perturbations eventually results in a global fragmentation of the bow shock front. An optical Thomson scattering diagnostic has been used to investigate collisions between supersonic, magnetized plasma flows, in particular the transition from collisionless to collisional interaction dynamics. These flows were produced using tungsten wire array z-pinches, driven by the 1.4 MA 240 ns Magpie generator at Imperial College London. Measurements of the collective-mode Thomson scattering ion-feature clearly indicate that the ablation flows are interpenetrating at 100 ns (after current start), and this interpenetration continues until at least 140 ns. The Thomson spectrum at 150 ns shows a clear change in the dynamics of the stream interactions, transitioning towards a collisional, shock-like interaction of the streams near the axis. The Thomson scattering data also provide indirect evidence of the presence of a significant toroidal magnetic field embedded in the “precursor” plasma near the axis of the array over the period 100–140 ns; these observations are in agreement with previous measuremen...

We present a study of the formation of bow shocks in radiatively cooled plasma flows. This work uses an inverse wire array to provide a quasi-uniform, large scale hydrodynamic flow accelerated by Lorentz forces to supersonic velocities. This flow impacts a stationary object placed in its path, forming a well-defined Mach cone. A gas-filled cylindrical liner z-pinch configuration has been used to drive convergent radiative shock waves into different gases at velocities of 20–50 km s−1. On application of the 1.4 MA, 240 ns rise-time current pulse produced by the Magpie generator at Imperial College London, a series of cylindrically convergent shock waves are sequentially launched into the gas-fill from the inner wall of the liner. This occurs without any bulk motion of the liner wall itself. The timing and trajectories of the shocks are used as a diagnostic tool for understanding the response of the liner z-pinch wall to a large pulsed current. This analysis provides useful data on the liner resistivity, and a means to test equation of state (EOS) and material strength models within MHD simulation codes. In addition to providing information on liner response, the convergent shocks are interesting to study in their own right. The shocks are strong enough for radiation transport to influence the shock wave structure. In particular, we see evidence for both radiative preheating of material ahead of the shockwaves and radiative cooling instabilities in the shocked gas. Some preliminary results from initial gas-filled liner experiments with an applied axial magnetic field are also discussed.

Collimated flows ejected from young stars are believed to play a vital role in the star formation process by extracting angular momentum from the accretion disk. We discuss the first experiments to simulate rotating radiatively cooled, hypersonic jets in the laboratory. A modification of the conical wire array $z$-pinch is used to introduce angular momentum into convergent flows of plasma, a jet-forming standing shock and into the jet itself. The rotation of the jet is evident in laser imaging through the presence of discrete filaments which trace the rotational history of the jet. The presence of angular momentum results in a hollow density profile in both the standing conical shock and the jet.

We present experimental data on the steady state deflection of a highly supersonic jet by a side-wind in the laboratory. The use of a long interaction region enables internal shocks to fully cross the jet, leading to the development of significantly more structure in the jet than in previous work with a similar setup (Lebedev et al., 2004). The ability to control the length of the interaction region in the laboratory allows the switch between a regime representing a clumpy jet or wind and a regime similar to a slowly varying mass loss rate. The results indicate that multiple internal oblique shocks develop in the jet and the possible formation of a second working surface as the jet attempts to tunnel through the ambient medium.

Jets and outflows are thought to be an integral part of accretion phenomena and are associated with a large variety of objects. In these systems, the interaction of magnetic fields with an accretion disk and/or a magnetized central object is thought to be responsible for the acceleration and collimation of plasma into jets and wider angle flows. In this paper we present three-dimensional MHD simulations of magnetically driven, radiatively cooled laboratory jets that are produced on the MAGPIE experimental facility. The general outflow structure comprises an expanding magnetic cavity which is collimated by the pressure of an extended plasma background medium, and a magnetically confined jet which develops within the magnetic cavity. Although this structure is intrinsically transient and instabilities in the jet and disruption of the magnetic cavity ultimately lead to its break-up, a well collimated, knotty jet still emerges from the system; such clumpy morphology is reminiscent of that observed in many astrophysical jets. The SPHINX facility (with 1-mus rise time and 5 MA) has been developed for soft X-ray production at the Centre d'Etudes de Gramat, Gramat, France. The first experiments were performed with aluminum nested wire arrays Z-pinches for K-shell production. A K-shell yield of up to 25 kJ and the full-width at half-maximum of an X-ray pulse of about 50 ns were obtained with an 800-ns implosion time and a 4-MA peak current. The specific features observed during these experiments are discussed. Inner-array dynamics highlights the fact that resistivity should not be neglected in the analysis. The effect of the return-current housing on the array dynamics, as well as the ways to mitigate it and control its impact on the radiation pulse, is also examined

A review of recent experiments on the MAGPIE generator (1 MA, 250 ns) aimed at studying the implosion dynamics of wire array Z-pinches is presented. The first phase of implosion is dominated by the gradual ablation of stationary wire cores and gradual redistribution of the array mass by the precursor plasma flow. It is found that the rate of wire ablation depends on the magnitude of the global (collective) magnetic field of the array, and increases with the field. The existence of the modulation of the ablation rate along the wires leads to the presence of a 'trailing' mass left behind by the imploding current sheath. The trailing mass provides an alternative path for the current, reducing the force available for compression of the pinch at stagnation. The observed dependence of the ablation rate on inter-wire separation suggests an explanation for the existence of the optimal wire number maximizing the x-ray power. Axially resolved spectroscopy shows the presence of the x-ray 'bright' spots (< 150 µm) emitting intense continuum radiation.

We present new data from High Energy Density (HED) laboratory experiments designed to explore the interaction of a heavy hypersonic radiative jet with a cross wind. The jets are generated with the MAGPIE pulsed power machine where converging conical plasma flows are produced from a cylindrically symmetric array of inclined wires. Radiative hypersonic jets emerge from the convergence point. The cross wind is generated by ablation of a plastic foil via soft-X-rays from the plasma convergence region. Our experiments show that the jets are deflected by the action of the cross wind with the angle of deflection dependent on the proximity of the foil. Shocks within the jet beam are apparent in the data. Analysis of the data shows that the interaction of the jet and cross wind is collisional and therefore in the hydro-dynamic regime. MHD plasma code simulations of the experiments are able to recover the deflection behaviour seen in the experiments. We consider the astrophysical relevance of these experiments applying published models of jet deflection developed for AGN and YSOs. Fitting the observed jet deflections to quadratic trajectories predicted by these models allows us to recover a set of plasma parameters consistent with the data. We also present results of 3-D numerical simulations of jet deflection using a new astrophysical Adaptive Mesh Refinement code. These simulations show highly structured shocks occurring within the beam similar to what was observed in the experiments, Submitted to ApJ. Resistive magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations are used to evaluate the influence of three-dimensional inhomogeneities on x-ray power production in wire array Z-pinches. In particular, we concentrate on simulations of wire array Z-pinch experiments on the MAGPIE generator at Imperial College. An initial temperature perturbation is used to stimulate variations in wire core ablation rates that result in a highly non-uniform final implosion. Results indicate that x-ray power production is governed by the symmetry of the implosion surface and by the rate at which current can transfer to the axis through a three-dimensional debris field that trails behind the main implosion. The peak power is ultimately limited by the growth of MHD instabilities in the stagnated pinch. The individual contributions of the implosion kinetic energy, compression of the stagnated pinch, ohmic heating and MHD instabilities to the radiation yield are quantified. The onset of m = 1 instabilities is found to provide an efficient mechanism for dissipation of the magnetic energy surrounding the stagnated pinch. The formation of a helical plasma column not only allows the magnetic field to do work in driving an expansion of the helix but also enhances the ohmic heating by elongating the path of the current through the pinch. The effect of these energy sources combined is to increase the radiation yield to typically 3½ times the kinetic energy of the implosion. Simulations of arrays with different wire numbers, wire material and with nested arrays are used to examine the mechanisms that influence the peak soft x-ray power. In the simulations, peak power can be increased by: increasing the number of wires (which improves the implosion symmetry), by increasing the atomic number of the material (which increases the compressibility of the plasma) and by using a nested inner array (which brings the mass and the current to the axis more efficiently than a single array).

A technique for manufacturing wires with imposed modulation in radius with axial wavelengths as short as 1 mm is presented. Extruded aluminum 5056 with 15 μm diameter was masked and chemically etched to reduce the radius by ∼20% in selected regions. Characterized by scanning electron microscopy, the modulation in radius is a step function with a ∼10 μm wide conical transition between thick and thin segments, with some pitting in etched regions. Techniques for mounting and aligning these wires in arrays for fast z-pinch experiments will be discussed. Axially mass-modulated wire arrays of this type will allow the study of seeded Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities in z pinches, corona formation, wire initiation with varying current density in the wire core, and correlation of perturbations between adjacent wires. This tool will support magnetohydrodynamics code validation in complex three-dimensional geometries, and perhaps x-ray pulse shaping.

During the early stages of a wire array Z-pinch implosion, low density plasma streams toward the axis by virtue of the Lorentz force. This streaming precursor plasma may initially be highly collisionless with respect to ion–ion collisions and therefore cannot be modeled using standard fluid theory. The hybrid method in this paper models both collisional and collisionless behavior with ions exchanging energy and momentum with other ions via a Monte Carlo algorithm equivalent to a small-angle kinetic solution and with an electron fluid via a frictional force. It is shown that the axial stagnation of the plasma flow occurs once the density becomes sufficiently high to initiate a nonlinear rise in electron–ion energy exchange, resulting in the thermal equilibration between radiatively cooling electrons and hot, thermalized ions. This then gives rise to a dense, long-lived precursor column on axis, as observed experimentally. The column is held in place by the kinetic pressure of the streaming precursor plasma, which is balanced by the thermal pressure of the plasma in the column at the column’s edge.

The hypothesis that wire array Z-pinch radiation sources can be represented as an ablating mass source embedded within a Lorentz force field is examined and the effects that this has upon the trajectory and spatial structure of the ensuing implosion are studied. Two-dimensional (2D) resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the ablating core regions and of the array cross-section indicate that the core ablation rate is determined by force balance at the ablation surface. This implies a weak dependence of the ablation velocity (the ratio of the magnitude of the Lorentz force to the mass ablation rate) on the array parameters (current, radius, mass, etc.). In the case of a constant ablation rate, the radial profiles in the flow region between the wires and the axis are found to converge to a set of time independent equilibria. Nested wire array Z-pinch experiments carried out on the MAGPIE generator (1.4 MA, 240 ns) [I. H. Mitchell et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 67, 1553 (1996)] are described. In the experiments, a high inductance connection to the inner array was used to suppress the current flowing through it. This allowed the current division expected in experiments on larger generators to be emulated, where the number of wires in the outer array acts to shield the inner array. Initially the suppression of current resulted in the wires of the inner array remaining as small discrete bodies, while the wires of the outer array ablated, prefilling the array with plasma in an identical way to a single array experiment. During implosion the outer array accelerated towards the inner array, snowploughing up the prefilled plasma, producing a rise in x-ray emission. When the outer array traveled past the inner array, a fast inductive transfer of current occurred between them, and the inner array then accelerated towards the axis where it stagnated to produce the main x-ray pulse. The risetime of the main x-ray pulse was significantly shorter than in single array experiments. The dependence of the shape of the x-ray pulse on the configuration of the outer and inner arrays was explored.

Jet research has long relied upon a combination of analytical, observational and numerical studies to elucidate the complex phenomena involved. One element missing from these studies (which other physical sciences utilize) is the controlled experimental investigation of such systems. With the advent of high-power lasers and fast Z-pinch machines it is now possible to experimentally study similar systems in a laboratory setting. Such investigations can contribute in two useful ways. They can be used for comparison with numerical simulations as a means to validate simulation codes. More importantly, however, such investigations can also be used to complement other jet research, leading to fundamentally new knowledge. In the first part of this article, we analyze the evolution of magnetized wide-angle winds in a collapsing environment. We track the ambient and wind mass separately and describe a physical mechanism by which an ionized central wind can entrain the ambient gas giving rise to internal shells of molecular material on short time scales. The formation of internal shells in molecular outflows has been found to be an important ingredient in describing the observations of convex spurs in P-V diagrams (Hubble wedges in M-V diagrams). In the second part, we present astrophysically relevant experiments in which supersonic jets are created using a conical wire array Z-pinch. The conically convergent flow generates a standing shock around the axis which collimates the flow into a Mach ∼ 30 jet. The jet formation process is closely related to the work of Canto et al. (1988) for hydrodynamic jet collimation. The influence of radiative cooling on collimation and stability is studied by varying the wire material (A1, Fe, and W).

The effect of discrete wires on the implosion dynamics of wire array Z-pinch experiments at ∼1 MA current level is discussed. The data show that the formation of a core–corona structure leads to gradual radial redistribution of mass by precursor plasma flow from the stationary wire cores during the first ∼80% of the implosion time. This phase ends with the formation of gaps in the wire cores, which occurs due to the nonuniformity of ablation rate along the wires. The final phase of the implosion starting at this time occurs as a rapid snowplow-like implosion of the plasma, previously injected into the interior of the array. The density distribution of the precursor plasma being peaked on the array axis could be a key factor providing stability of the wire array implosions operating in the regime of discrete wires. The implications of this implosion scenario to the operation of nested wire arrays and foam targets on the array axis are also discussed.
