Search

Reproducing the observed quenched fraction of satellite galaxies has been a long-standing issue for galaxy formation models. We modify the treatment of environmental effects in our state-of-the-art GAlaxy Evolution and Assembly (GAEA) semi-analytic model to improve our modelling of satellite galaxies. Specifically, we implement gradual stripping of hot gas, ram-pressure stripping of cold gas, and an updated algorithm to account for angular momentum exchanges between the gaseous and stellar disc components of model galaxies. Our updated model is in good agreement with the observed quenched fractions for central and satellite galaxies, and their dependencies on stellar mass and halo mass. We also find consistency between model predictions and observational estimates of quenching time for satellite galaxies; HI, H$_2$ fractions of central galaxies; and deficiencies of HI, H$_2$, SFR of galaxies in cluster haloes. Analysing results from our updated model, we find that the dominant quenching mechanisms are hot-gas stripping for low-mass galaxies, and AGN feedback for massive galaxies. The Ram-pressure stripping of cold gas has a limited impact on the predicted quenched fractions, nonetheless, is needed to reproduce the observed HI deficiencies., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present new SINFONI near-infrared integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy and SALT optical long-slit spectroscopy characterising the history of a nearby merging luminous infrared galaxy, dubbed the Bird (IRAS19115-2114). The NIR line-ratio maps of the IFU data-cubes and stellar population fitting of the SALT spectra now allow dating of the star formation (SF) over the triple system uncovered from our previous adaptive optics data. The distinct components separate very clearly in a line-ratio diagnostic diagram. An off-nuclear pure starburst dominates the current SF of the Bird with 60-70% of the total, with a 4-7 Myr age, and signs of a fairly constant long-term star formation of the underlying stellar population. The most massive nucleus, in contrast, is quenched with a starburst age of >40 Myr and shows hints of budding AGN activity. The secondary massive nucleus is at an intermediate stage. The two major components have a population of older stars, consistent with a starburst triggered 1 Gyr ago in a first encounter. The simplest explanation of the history is that of a triple merger, where the strongly star forming component has joined later. We detect multiple gas flows in different phases. The Bird offers an opportunity to witness multiple stages of galaxy evolution in the same system; triggering as well as quenching of SF, and the early appearance of AGN activity. It also serves as a cautionary note on interpretations of observations with lower spatial resolution and/or without infrared data. Based on HST and MUSE data, we probe the stellar and gas properties (i.e. kinematics, stellar mass, star formation rate) of the radio-loud brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) located at the centre of the X-ray luminous cool core cluster Abell 2667 (z = 0.2343). The bi-dimensional modelling of the BCG surface brightness profile reveals the presence of a complex system of substructures extending all around the galaxy. Clumps of different size and shape plunged into a more diffuse component constitute these substructures, whose intense 'blue' optical colour hints to the presence of a young stellar population. Our results depict the BCG as a massive (M_star ~ 1.38 x 10^11 M_sun) dispersion-supported spheroid (v_star < 150 km/s, sigma_0 ~ 216 km/s) hosting an active supermassive black hole (M_SMBH ~ 3.8 x 10^9 M_sun) whose optical features are typical of low ionisation nuclear emission line regions. Although the velocity pattern of the stars in the BCG is irregular, the stellar kinematics in the regions of the clumps show a positive velocity of ~ 100 km/s, similarly to the gas component. An analysis of the mechanism giving rise to the observed lines in the clumps through empirical diagnostic diagrams points out that the emission is composite, suggesting the contribution from both star formation and AGN. We conclude our analysis describing how scenarios of both chaotic cold accretion and merging with a gas-rich disc galaxy can efficaciously explain the phenomena the BCG is undergoing., Accepted for publication on the 10th of June 2019 (MNRAS)

With the recent discovery of a dozen dusty star-forming galaxies and around 30 quasars at z>5 that are hyper-luminous in the infrared ($��$$L_{\rm IR}>10^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$, where $��$ is a lensing magnification factor), the possibility has opened up for SPICA, the proposed ESA M5 mid-/far-infrared mission, to extend its spectroscopic studies toward the epoch of reionization and beyond. In this paper, we examine the feasibility and scientific potential of such observations with SPICA's far-infrared spectrometer SAFARI, which will probe a spectral range (35-230 $��$m) that will be unexplored by ALMA and JWST. Our simulations show that SAFARI is capable of delivering good-quality spectra for hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs) at z=5-10, allowing us to sample spectral features in the rest-frame mid-infrared and to investigate a host of key scientific issues, such as the relative importance of star formation versus AGN, the hardness of the radiation field, the level of chemical enrichment, and the properties of the molecular gas. From a broader perspective, SAFARI offers the potential to open up a new frontier in the study of the early Universe, providing access to uniquely powerful spectral features for probing first-generation objects, such as the key cooling lines of low-metallicity or metal-free forming galaxies (fine-structure and H2 lines) and emission features of solid compounds freshly synthesized by Population III supernovae. Ultimately, SAFARI's ability to explore the high-redshift Universe will be determined by the availability of sufficiently bright targets (whether intrinsically luminous or gravitationally lensed). With its launch expected around 2030, SPICA is ideally positioned to take full advantage of upcoming wide-field surveys such as LSST, SKA, Euclid, and WFIRST, which are likely to provide extraordinary targets for SAFARI., 24 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASA (SPICA special issue)

Photometry of the nebulae LDN1780, LDN1642 and LBN406 is used to derive scattering properties of dust and to investigate the presence of UV fluorescence emission by molecular hydrogen and the extended red emission (ERE). We used multi-wavelength optical photometry and imaging at ground-based telescopes and archival imaging and spectroscopic UV data from the spaceborn GALEX and SPEAR/FIMS instruments. We used Monte Carlo RT and both observational data and synthetic models for the ISRF in the solar neighbourhood. The line-of-sight extinctions through the clouds have been determined using near infrared excesses of background stars and the 200/250um far infrared emission by dust measured using the ISO and Herschel space observatories. The optical surface brightness of the target clouds can be explained in terms of scattered light. The dust albedo ranges from 0.58 at 3500A to 0.72 at 7500A. The SED of LDN1780 is explained in terms of optical depth and background scattered light effects instead of ERE. The FUV surface brightness of LDN 1780 cannot be explained by scattered light only. In LDN1780 H2 fluorescent emission in the wavelength range 1400A-1700A has been detected and analysed. Our albedo values agree with the predictions of the dust model of Weingartner and Draine and with the THEMIS CMM model for evolved core-mantle grains. The H2 fluorescent emission in LDN1780 shows a pronounced dichotomy with a preference for its southern side where enhanced illumination impinges from the Sco OB2 association and the O star zeta Oph. A good correlation is found between the H2 fluorescence and a previously mapped 21-cm excess emission. The H2 fluorescence emission in LDN1780 has been modelled using a PDR code; the resulting values for H2 column density and the total gas density are consistent with the estimates derived from CO observations and optical extinction along the line of sight., Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics in press

Within a Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) scenario, we use high resolution cosmological simulations spanning over four orders of magnitude in galaxy mass to understand the deficit of dwarf galaxies in observed velocity functions. We measure velocities in as similar a way as possible to observations, including generating mock HI data cubes for our simulated galaxies. We demonstrate that this apples-to-apples comparison yields an "observed" velocity function in agreement with observations, reconciling the large number of low-mass halos expected in a LCDM cosmological model with the low number of observed dwarfs at a given velocity. We then explore the source of the discrepancy between observations and theory, and conclude that the dearth of observed dwarf galaxies is primarily explained by two effects. The first effect is that galactic rotational velocities derived from the HI linewidth severely underestimate the maximum halo velocity. The second effect is that a large fraction of halos at the lowest masses are too faint to be detected by current galaxy surveys. We find that cored dark matter density profiles can contribute to the lower observed velocity of galaxies, but only for galaxies in which the velocity is measured interior to the size of the core (~3 kpc)., Comment: updated after acceptance for publication in ApJ

It is not well known what drives the chemistry of a protostellar envelope, in particular the role of the stellar mass and the outflows on its chemical enrichment. We study the chemical structure of NGC 1333 IRAS 4A in order to (i) investigate the influence of the outflows on the chemistry, (ii) constrain the age of our object, (iii) compare it with a typical high-mass protostellar envelope. In our analysis we use JCMT line mapping and HIFI pointed spectra. To study the influence of the outflow on the degree of deuteration, we compare JCMT maps of HCO+ and DCO+ with non-LTE (RADEX) models in a region that spatially covers the outflow activity of IRAS 4A. To study the envelope chemistry, we derive empirical molecular abundance profiles for the observed species using the radiative transfer code (RATRAN) and adopting a 1D dust density/temperature profile from the literature. We compare our best-fit observed abundance profiles with the predictions from the time dependent gas grain chemical code (ALCHEMIC). The CO, HCN, HNC and CN abundance require an enhanced UV field which points towards an outflow cavity. The abundances (wrt H2) are 1 to 2 orders of magnitude lower than those observed in the high mass protostellar envelope (AFGL 2591), while they are found to be similar within factors of a few with respect to CO. Differences in UV radiation may be responsible for such chemical differentiation, but temperature differences seem a more plausible explanation. The CH3OH modeled abundance profile points towards an age of > 4x10^4 yrs for IRAS 4A. The spatial distribution of H2D+ differs from that of other deuterated species, indicating an origin from a foreground colder layer (, 26 pages, 23 Figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present neutral hydrogen observations for a sample of eight nearby, late-type, edge-on galaxies. All of the galaxies have been well resolved in the radial direction, while six have also been well resolved in the vertical direction. We find that each of the galaxies has approximately the same maximum surface brightness temperature throughout its disc. We argue that self-absorption is the main cause of this phenomenon and that subsequent decompositions will require a treatment of this.

This paper introduces a new disk code, called ProDiMo, to calculate the thermo-chemical structure of protoplanetary disks and to interpret gas emission lines from UV to sub-mm. We combine frequency-dependent 2D dust continuum radiative transfer, kinetic gas-phase and UV photo-chemistry, ice formation, and detailed non-LTE heating & cooling balance with the consistent calculation of the hydrostatic disk structure. We include FeII and CO ro-vibrational line heating/cooling relevant for the high-density gas close to the star, and apply a modified escape probability treatment. The models are characterized by a high degree of consistency between the various physical, chemical and radiative processes, where the mutual feedbacks are solved iteratively. In application to a T Tauri disk extending from 0.5AU to 500AU, the models are featured by a puffed-up inner rim and show that the dense, shielded and cold midplane (z/r, 24 pages, 14 figures, 120 equations, accepted by A&A, download a high-resolution version from http://www.roe.ac.uk/~ptw/prodimo1_article.pdf

Many present-day galaxies are known to harbor supermassive, >10^6 Mo, black holes. These central black holes must have grown through accretion from less massive seeds in the early universe. The molecules CO and H2 can be used to trace this young population of accreting massive black holes through the X-ray irradiation of ambient gas. The X-rays drive a low-metallicity ion-molecule chemistry that leads to the formation and excitation of CO and H2 in 10015 and H2 S(0) & S(1) emission is found that allows one to constrain ambient conditions. Comparable line strengths cannot be produced by FUV or cosmic ray irradiation. Weak, but perhaps detectable, H3+ (2,2) - (1,1) emission is found and discussed. The models predict that black hole masses larger than 10^5 Mo can be detected with ALMA, over a redshift range of 5-20, provided that the black holes radiate close to Eddington., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, ApJL accepted; minor typographical changes

The ISO spectra of the bilobal planetary nebula Hb 5 are presented. These spectra are combined with the spectra in the visual wavelength region to obtain a complete, extinction corrected, spectrum. The chemical composition of the nebula is then calculated in several ways. First by directly calculating and adding individual ion abundances, assuming that all the ionic lines are formed in an ionized region surrounding the ionizing star. Secondly by building an "end-to-end model" nebula in which we have included a neutral region and a photodissociation region (PDR) beyond the ionized nebula. In this way we attempt to interpret the molecular hydrogen lines observed by ISO in a more self-consistent way. In the final analysis, the model is found to be basically heuristic, but gives new insights about the PDR and the PN. The implications of these are discussed.

We present Infrared Space Observatory mid- and far-infrared spectroscopy of the merging galaxy NGC 6240, an object presenting many aspects of importance for the role of star formation and AGN activity in [ultra]luminous infrared galaxies. The mid-infrared spectrum shows starburst indicators in the form of low excitation fine-structure line emission and aromatic `PAH' features. A strong high excitation [OIV] line is observed which most likely originates in the Narrow Line Region of an optically obscured AGN. NGC 6240 shows extremely powerful emission in the pure rotational lines of molecular hydrogen. We argue that this emission is mainly due to shocks in its turbulent central gas component and its starburst superwind. The total shock cooling in infrared emission lines accounts for ~0.6% of the bolometric luminosity, mainly through rotational H_2 emission and the [OI] 63micron line. We analyse several ways of estimating the luminosities of the starburst and the AGN in NGC 6240 and suggest that the contributions to its bolometric luminosity are most likely in the range 50-75% starburst and 25-50% AGN., 5 figures. The dust-Hi correlation is used to characterize the emission properties of dust in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) from far infrared wavelengths to microwave frequencies. The field of this investigation encompasses the part of the southern sky best suited to study the cosmic infrared and microwave backgrounds. We cross-correlate sky maps from Planck, the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), and the diffuse infrared background experiment (DIRBE), at 17 frequencies from 23 to 3000 GHz, with the Parkes survey of the 21 cm line emission of neutral atomic hydrogen, over a contiguous area of 7500 deg2 centred on the southern Galactic pole. We present a general methodology to study the dust-H i correlation over the sky, including simulations to quantify uncertainties. Our analysis yields four specific results. (1) We map the temperature, submillimetre emissivity, and opacity of the dust per H-atom. The dust temperature is observed to be anti-correlated with the dust emissivity and opacity. We interpret this result as evidence of dust evolution within the diffuse ISM. The mean dust opacity is measured to be (7.1 ± 0.6) × 10-27 cm2 H-1 × (v/353 GHz) 1.53 ± 0.03for 100 ≤ v ≤ 353 GHz. This is a reference value to estimate hydrogen column densities from dust emission at submillimetre and millimetre wavelengths. (2) We map the spectral index βmm of dust emission at millimetre wavelengths (defined here as v ≤ 353GHz), and find it to be remarkably constant at βmm = 1.51 ± 0.13. We compare it with the far infrared spectral index βFIR derived from greybody fits at higher frequencies, and find a systematic difference, βmm -βFIR = -0.15, which suggests that the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) flattens at v ≤ 353 GHz. (3) We present spectral fits of the microwave emission correlated with Hi from 23 to 353 GHz, which separate dust and anomalous microwave emission (AME). We show that the flattening of the dust SED can be accounted for with an additional component with a blackbody spectrum. This additional component, which accounts for (26 ± 6)% of the dust emission at 100GHz, could represent magnetic dipole emission. Alternatively, it could account for an increasing contribution of carbon dust, or a flattening of the emissivity of amorphous silicates, at millimetre wavelengths. These interpretations make different predictions for the dust polarization SED. (4) We analyse the residuals of the dust-Hi correlation. We identify a Galactic contribution to these residuals, which we model with variations of the dust emissivity on angular scales smaller than that of our correlation analysis. We present high-angular-resolution, far-infrared images of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The images were reconstructed from data obtained with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), using the Pyramid Maximum Entropy algorithm. The angular resolutions of the images are 1 arcmin at 12, 25 and 60 mu m, and 1.7 arcmin at 100 mu m, which provides an excellent complement to the recent neutral hydrogen (H I) survey from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, which has a resolution of 1.6 arcmin. We use the 60- and 100-mu m data, together with a standard dust model, to derive a temperature map and a dust column density distribution. Dust temperatures range from 23 to 45 K, which is, on average, warmer than for the Galaxy, although there is a deficit of warm, very small dust grains in the SMC. The total amount of cool dust in the SMC is 1.8(-0.2)(+1.3) x 10(4) M.. There is a significant variation of the observed dust-to-gas ratio across the SMC. This may be caused by corresponding variations in metallicity, but this explanation is not supported by the limited available data in the literature. Alternatively, there may be a large amount of molecular hydrogen (H(2)) in the SMC, similar to 8 x 10(8) M., and/or a large amount (similar to 10(6) M.) of cold dust (less than or equal to 15 K) not seen by IRAS or COBE/DIRBE. The average dust-to-atomic gas ratio is, by mass, 8.2 x 10(-5), which is a factor of similar to 30 below the Galactic value. The spatial power spectrum of the dust column density image can be approximated by P(d)(k) proportional to k(-3.1), which shows that, as with the H I power spectrum, there is no preferred scale size for dust clouds. A spatial coherence analysis shows that, over a wide range of spatial scales (greater than or similar to 50 pc), H I and dust are well correlated (> 60 per cent).

Molecular hydrogen is the most abundant molecule in the universe. A large fraction of H2 forms by association of hydrogen atoms adsorbed on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), where formation rates depend crucially on the H sticking probability. We have experimentally studied PAH hydrogenation by exposing coronene cations, confined in a radiofrequency ion trap, to gas phase atomic hydrogen. A systematic increase of the number of H atoms adsorbed on the coronene with the time of exposure is observed. Odd coronene hydrogenation states dominate the mass spectrum up to 11 H atoms attached. This indicates the presence of a barrier preventing H attachment to these molecular systems. For the second and fourth hydrogenation, barrier heights of 72 +- 6 meV and 40 +- 10 meV, respectively are found which is in good agreement with theoretical predictions for the hydrogenation of neutral PAHs. Our experiments however prove that the barrier does not vanish for higher hydrogenation states. These results imply that PAH cations, as their neutral counterparts, exist in highly hydrogenated forms in the interstellar medium. Molecular para-hydrogen has been proposed theoretically as a possible candidate for superfluidity, but the eventual superfluid transition is hindered by its crystallization. In this work, we study a metastable non crystalline phase of bulk p-H2 by means of the Path Integral Monte Carlo method in order to investigate at which temperature this system can support superfluidity. By choosing accurately the initial configuration and using a non commensurate simulation box, we have been able to frustrate the formation of the crystal in the simulated system and to calculate the temperature dependence of the one-body density matrix and of the superfluid fraction. We observe a transition to a superfluid phase at temperatures around 1 K. The limit of zero temperature is also studied using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. Results for the energy, condensate fraction, and structure of the metastable liquid phase at T=0 are reported and compared with the ones obtained for the stable solid phase.

NGC 1097 is a nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy with a bright circumnuclear starburst ring, a strong large-scale bar and an active nucleus. We present a detailed study of the spatial variation of the far infrared (FIR) [CII]158um and [OI]63um lines and mid-infrared H2 emission lines as tracers of gas cooling, and of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bands as tracers of the photoelectric heating, using Herschel-PACS, and Spitzer-IRS infrared spectral maps. We focus on the nucleus and the ring, and two star forming regions (Enuc N and Enuc S). We estimated a photoelectric gas heating efficiency ([CII]158um+[OI]63um)/PAH in the ring about 50% lower than in Enuc N and S. The average 11.3/7.7um PAH ratio is also lower in the ring, which may suggest a larger fraction of ionized PAHs, but no clear correlation with [CII]158{\mu}m/PAH(5.5 - 14um) is found. PAHs in the ring are responsible for a factor of two more [CII]158um and [OI]63um emission per unit mass than PAHs in the Enuc S. SED modeling indicates that at most 25% of the FIR power in the ring and Enuc S can come from high intensity photodissociation regions (PDRs), in which case G0 ~ 10^2.3 and nH ~ 10^3.5 cm^-3 in the ring. For these values of G0 and nH PDR models cannot reproduce the observed H2 emission. We present new continuum and line observations, along with modelling, of the faint (6-8) Myr old T Tauri star ET Cha belonging to the eta Chamaeleontis cluster. We have acquired Herschel/PACS photometric fluxes at 70 mu m and 160 mu m, as well as a detection of the [OI] 63 mu m fine-structure line in emission, and derived upper limits for some other far-IR OI, CII, CO and o-H2O lines. These observations were carried out in the frame of the open time key programme GASPS, where ETCha was selected as one of the science demonstration phase targets. The Herschel data is complemented by new simultaneous ANDICAM B-K photometry, new HST/COS and HST/STIS UV-observations, a non-detection of CO J = 3 -> 2 with APEX, re-analysis of a UCLES high-resolution optical spectrum showing forbidden emission lines like [OI] 6300 angstrom, [SII] 6731 angstrom and 6716 angstrom, and [NII] 6583 angstrom, and a compilation of existing broad-band photometric data. We used the thermo-chemical disk code ProDiMo and the Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code MCFOST to model the protoplanetary disk around ETCha. The paper also introduces a number of physical improvements to the ProDiMo disk modelling code concerning the treatment of PAH ionisation balance and heating, the heating by exothermic chemical reactions, and several non-thermal pumping mechanisms for selected gas emission lines. By applying an evolutionary strategy to minimise the deviations between model predictions and observations, we find a variety of united gas and dust models that simultaneously fit all observed line and continuum fluxes about equally well. Based on these models we can determine the disk dust mass with confidence, M-dust approximate to (2-5) x 10(-8) M-circle dot whereas the total disk gas mass is found to be only little constrained, M-gas approximate to (5 x 10(-5)-3 x 10(-3)) M-circle dot. Both mass estimates are substantially lower than previously reported. In the models, the disk extends from 0.022 AU (just outside of the co-rotation radius) to only about 10 AU, remarkably small for single stars, whereas larger disks are found to be inconsistent with the CO J = 3 -> 2 non-detection. The low velocity component of the [OI] 6300 angstrom emission line is centred on the stellar systematic velocity, and is consistent with being emitted from the inner disk. The model is also consistent with the line flux of H-2 v = 1 -> 0 S(1) at 2.122 mu m and with the [OI] 63 mu m line as seen with Herschel/PACS. An additional high-velocity component of the [OI] 6300 angstrom emission line, however, points to the existence of an additional jet/outflow of low velocity 40-65 km s(-1) with mass loss rate approximate to 10(-9) M-circle dot/yr. In relation to our low estimations of the disk mass, such a mass loss rate suggests a disk lifetime of only similar to 0.05-3 Myr, substantially shorter than the cluster age. If a generic gas/dust ratio of 100 was assumed, the disk lifetime would be even shorter, only similar to 3000 yrs. The evolutionary state of this unusual protoplanetary disk is discussed.

Context: T Tauri stars have X-ray luminosities ranging from L_X = 10^28-10^32 erg/s. These luminosities are similar to UV luminosities (L_UV 10^30-10^31 erg/s) and therefore X-rays are expected to affect the physics and chemistry of the upper layers of their surrounding protoplanetary disks. Aim: The effects and importance of X-rays on the chemical and hydrostatic structure of protoplanetary disks are investigated, species tracing X-ray irradiation (for L_X >= 10^29 erg/s) are identified and predictions for [OI], [CII] and [NII] fine structure line fluxes are provided. Methods: We have implemented X-ray physics and chemistry into the chemo-physical disk code ProDiMo. We include Coulomb heating and H2 ionization as heating processes and primary and secondary ionization due to X-rays in the chemistry. Results: X-rays heat up the gas causing it to expand in the optically thin surface layers. Neutral molecular species are not much affected in their abundance and spatial distribution, but charged species such as N+, OH+, H2O+ and H3O+ show enhanced abundances in the disk surface. Conclusions: Coulomb heating by X-rays changes the vertical structure of the disk, yielding temperatures of ~ 8000 K out to distances of 50 AU. The chemical structure is altered by the high electron abundance in the gas in the disk surface, causing an efficient ion-molecule chemistry. The products of this, OH+, H2O+ and H3O+, are of great interest for observations of low-mass young stellar objects with the Herschel Space Observatory. We present high resolution (R = 100,000) L-band spectroscopy of 11 Herbig AeBe stars with circumstellar disks. The observations were obtained with the VLT/CRIRES to detect hot water and hydroxyl radical emission lines previously detected in disks around T Tauri stars. OH emission lines are detected towards 4 disks. The OH P4.5 (1+,1-) doublet is spectrally resolved as well as the velocity profile of each component of the doublet. Its characteristic double-peak profile demonstrates that the gas is in Keplerian rotation and points to an emitting region extending out to ~ 15-30 AU. The OH, emission correlates with disk geometry as it is mostly detected towards flaring disks. None of the Herbig stars analyzed here show evidence of hot water vapor at a sensitivity similar to that of the OH lines. The non-detection of hot water vapor emission indicates that the atmosphere of disks around Herbig AeBe stars are depleted of water molecules. Assuming LTE and optically thin emission we derive a lower limit to the OH/H2O column density ratio > 1 - 25 in contrast to T Tauri disks for which the column density ratio is 0.3 -- 0.4., Accepted for publication in ApJ

$\Lambda$CDM numerical simulations predict that the "missing baryons" reside in a Warm-Hot gas phase in the over-dense cosmic filaments. However, there are now several theoretical and observational arguments that support the fact that galactic disks may be more massive than usually thought, containing a substantial fraction of the "missing baryons". Hereafter, we present new N-body simulations of galactic disks, where the gas content has been multiplied by a factor 5. The stability of the disk is ensured by assuming that the ISM is composed out of two partially coupled phases, a warm phase, corresponding the observed CO and HI gas and a cold collisionless phase corresponding to the unseen baryons., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. The role of HD cooling in the formation of primordial objects is examined by means of a great number of 1-D models of the collapse of halos, exploring a wide range of masses and virialization redshifts. We find that HD has very little effect upon the critical mass separating the objects which are likely to form stars from those which are not. We also find that, once the proto-stellar collapse has started, HD effects are quite negligible. Instead, HD effects can be important during the intermediate stage of gas fragmentation: objects below a certain mass scale (~3x10^5 Msun at z_vir=20 in our ``fiducial'' case) can be cooled by HD down to T~50-100 K, whereas H2 cooling never takes the gas below T~200 K. The lower temperature implies a reduction of a factor ~10 in the Jeans mass of the fragmenting gas, and stars forming in such low-mass halos are probably less massive than their counterparts in larger halos. We estimate the importance of this mode of star formation through a variation of the Press-Schechter formalism, and find that it never exceeds the contribution of halos which are cooled by H2 only. Halos where HD is important account at best for a fraction ~0.25 of the total primordial star formation. However, HD cooling might provide a channel through which long-lived low mass stars could be formed in primordial conditions., 11 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication on MNRAS

Context. Planets are thought to eventually form from the mostly gaseous (similar to 99% of the mass) disks around young stars. The density structure and chemical composition of protoplanetary disks are affected by the incident radiation field at optical, far-ultraviolet (FUV), and X-ray wavelengths, as well as by the dust properties.Aims. The effect of FUV and X-rays on the disk structure and the gas chemical composition are investigated. This work forms the basis of a second paper, which discusses the impact on diagnostic lines of, e. g., C+, O, H2O, and Ne+ observed with facilities such as Spitzer and Herschel.Methods. A grid of 240 models is computed in which the X-ray and FUV luminosity, minimum grain size, dust size distribution, and surface density distribution are varied in a systematic way. The hydrostatic structure and the thermo-chemical structure are calculated using Protoplanetary Disk Model (ProDiMo), with the recent addition of X-rays.Results. The abundance structure of neutral oxygen is very stable to changes in the X-ray and FUV luminosity, and the emission lines will thus be useful tracers of the disk mass and temperature. The C+ abundance distribution is sensitive to both X-rays and FUV. The radial column density profile shows two peaks, one at the inner rim and a second one at a radius r = 5-10 AU. The minimum is caused by shadowing from the inner rim. The fluctuations in value of the column density as a function of radius are smoothed out when FUV and X-ray luminosities increase. Ne+ and other heavy elements with an ionization potential higher than IP > 13.6 eV have a very strong response to X-rays, and the column density in the inner disk increases by two orders of magnitude from the lowest (L-X = 10(29) erg s(-1)) to the highest considered X-ray flux (L-X = 10(32) erg s(-1)). FUV confines the Ne+ ionized region to areas closer to the star at low X-ray luminosities (L-X = 10(29) erg s(-1)). This is indirectly caused by changes in the disk structure. The radial column densities of Ne+ are higher than 10(12) cm(-1) out to radii r > 100 AU (at L-FUV = 10(31) erg s(-1)), whereas the column density already drops below this value at radii r > 20 AU at L-FUV = 10(32) erg s(-1). H2O abundances are enhanced by X-rays due to higher temperatures in the inner disk than in the FUV only case, thus leading to a more efficient neutral-neutral formation channel. Also, the higher ionization fraction provides an ion-molecule route in the outer disk. The line fluxes and profiles are affected by the effects on these species, thus providing diagnostic value in the study of FUV and X-ray irradiated disks around T Tauri stars.

We study the effects of local environmental conditions affecting the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) carriers within the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Sco OB2 association. We obtained optical spectra with FEROS, and measured the equivalent widths of five DIBs (at 5780, 5797, 6196, 6379, and 6613 Angstrom) as well as those of absorption lines of di-atomic molecules (CH, CH+, CN) and atoms (KI, CaI) towards 89 targets in the direction of Upper Scorpius. We construct a simple radiative transfer and chemical network model of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) sheet in front of Upp Sco to infer the effective radiation field. Both the interstellar radiation field strength, I_UV, and the molecular hydrogen fraction, f_H2, have been derived for 55 sightlines probing the Upp Sco ISM. We discuss the relations between DIB strengths, CH and CH+ line strengths, E(B-V), I_UV, and f_H2. The ratio between the 5780 and 5797 DIBs reveals a (spatial) dependence on the local environment in terms of cloud density and exposure to the interstellar radiation field, reflecting the molecular nature of these DIB carriers., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A. 19 pages, 25 figures main paper. 26 pages appendix. v2. We have constructed maximally-localized Wannier functions for prototype structures of solid molecular hydrogen under pressure, starting from LDA and tight-binding Bloch wave functions. Each occupied Wannier function can be associated with two paired protons, defining a ``Wannier molecule''. The sum of the dipole moments of these ``molecules'' always gives the correct macroscopic polarization, even under strong compression, when the overlap between nearby Wannier functions becomes significant. We find that at megabar pressures the contributions to the dipoles arising from the overlapping tails of the Wannier functions is very large. The strong vibron infrared absorption experimentally observed in phase III, above ~ 150 GPa, is analyzed in terms of the vibron-induced fluctuations of the Wannier dipoles. We decompose these fluctuations into ``static'' and ``dynamical'' contributions, and find that at such high densities the latter term, which increases much more steeply with pressure, is dominant., Comment: 17 pages, two-column style with 14 postscript figures embedded. Yacora on the Web (www.yacora.de ) is a web application providing access to collisional radiative models based on the flexible solver Yacora. The main application range is plasma diagnostics in low-pressure plasmas. Available online are three collisional radiative models, namely for atomic hydrogen, molecular hydrogen and helium. This paper gives a brief overview to collisional radiative modeling and to the Yacora solver. The functionality of Yacora on the Web is introduced and the three available models as well as the used input data are presented and discussed. As application example, the models for atomic and molecular hydrogen are applied for investigating spontaneous emission in ionizing and recombining plasmas. This application shows a very good agreement between measured and calculated emission intensities as well as between plasma parameters from other diagnostics and those derived using Yacora on the Web from optical emission spectroscopy results.
