The full structuration of light in the transverse plane, including intensity, phase and polarization, holds the promise of unprecedented capabilities for applications in classical optics as well as in quantum optics and information sciences. Harnessing special topologies can lead to enhanced focusing, data multiplexing or advanced sensing and metrology. Here we experimentally demonstrate the storage of such spatio-polarization-patterned beams into an optical memory. A set of vectorial vortex modes is generated via liquid crystal cell with topological charge in the optic axis distribution, and preservation of the phase and polarization singularities is demonstrated after retrieval, at the single-photon level. The realized multiple-degree-of-freedom memory can find applications in classical data processing but also in quantum network scenarios where structured states have been shown to provide promising attributes, such as rotational invariance., Exploiting the full structuration of light fields for storing multiple degrees of freedom holds great promise for applications in classical and quantum optics. Here, the authors demonstrate the storage of spatio-polarization-patterned beams into an optical memory, and its retrieval at the single-photon level.

The wave-particle duality of light has led to two different encodings for optical quantum information processing. Several approaches have emerged based either on particle-like discrete-variable states, e.g. finite-dimensional quantum systems, or on wave-like continuous-variable states, e.g. infinite-dimensional systems. Here, we demonstrate the first measurement-induced generation of entanglement between optical qubits of these different types, located at distant places and connected by a lossy channel. Such hybrid entanglement, which is a key resource for a variety of recently proposed schemes, including quantum cryptography and computing, enables to convert information from one Hilbert space to the other via teleportation and therefore connect remote quantum processors based upon different encodings. Beyond its fundamental significance for the exploration of entanglement and its possible instantiations, our optical circuit opens the promises for heterogeneous network implementations, where discrete and continuous-variable operations and techniques can be efficiently combined.

Among the optical degrees of freedom, the orbital angular momentum of light1 provides unique properties2, including mechanical torque action, which has applications for light manipulation3, enhanced sensitivity in imaging techniques4 and potential high-density information coding for optical communication systems5. Recent years have also seen a tremendous interest in exploiting orbital angular momentum at the single-photon level in quantum information technologies6,7. In pursuing this endeavour, we demonstrate here the implementation of a quantum memory8 for quantum bits encoded in this optical degree of freedom. We generate various qubits with computer-controlled holograms, store and retrieve them on demand using a dynamic electromagnetically induced transparency protocol. We further analyse the retrieved states by quantum tomography and thereby demonstrate fidelities exceeding the classical benchmark, confirming the quantum functioning of our storage process. Our results provide an essential capability for future networks9 exploring the promises of orbital angular momentum of photons for quantum information applications. A quantum memory for orbital angular momentum qubits is demonstrated in the single-photon regime. It is based on cold cesium atoms and the dynamic electromagnetically induced transparency protocol. Retrieved states were analysed by quantum tomography, and fidelities after readout of over 92% were obtained, confirming the quantum functionality of the storage process.

We report significant improvements in the retrieval efficiency of a single excitation stored in an atomic ensemble and in the subsequent generation of strongly correlated pairs of photons. A 50% probability of transforming the stored excitation into one photon in a well-defined spatio-temporal mode at the output of the ensemble is demonstrated. These improvements are illustrated by the generation of high-quality heralded single photons with a suppression of the two-photon component below 1% of the value for a coherent state. A broad characterization of our system is performed for different parameters in order to provide input for the future design of realistic quantum networks.
