Abstract

In this work we present the results from two experiments dedicated to search for quadrupolecollective isovector valence-shell excitation, the states with so-called mixed proton-neutron symmetry (MSS), in nuclei around the doubly magic nucleus 208Pb. 212Po was studied in an α-transfer reaction. 204Hg was studied in an inverse kinematics Coulomb excitation reaction on a carbon target. Both experiments provide indications for existence of one-phonon MSSs. Those are the first experimentally identified MSSs in the mass A ≈ 208 region.

Abstract

18 pags., 11 figs., 4 tabs., The structure of the doubly magic Sn8250132 has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, populated both by the β-decay of In132 and β - delayed neutron emission of In133. The level scheme of Sn132 is greatly expanded with the addition of 68 γ transitions and 17 levels observed for the first time in the β decay. The information on the excited structure is completed by new γ transitions and states populated in the β-n decay of In133. Improved delayed neutron emission probabilities are obtained both for In132 and In133. Level lifetimes are measured via the advanced time-delayed βγγ(t) fast-timing method. An interpretation of the level structure is given based on the experimental findings and the particle-hole configurations arising from core excitations both from the N = 82 and Z = 50 shells, leading to positive- and negative-parity particle-hole multiplets. Abstract

The transitional nuclei Xe-132 and Xe-133 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusionevaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe-136 + 2(08P)b MNT reactions employing the highresolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe-136 + Pt-198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te-130(alpha, xn) Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS gamma-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the J(pi) = (7(-)) and (10+) isomers in Xe-132 and above the 11/2(-) isomer in Xe-133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z = 54 as well as the N = 78 and N = 79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T-1/2 >> mu s) isomer in Xe-133 which closes a gap along the N = isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

Abstract

The $5/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, $9/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, and $11/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states in $^{209}\mathrm{Po}$ were populated in the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{209}\mathrm{At}$ and their lifetimes measured using the electronic $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ fast timing technique. The lifetime of the $9/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state is measured for first time. The lifetime of the $5/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ is measured to be shorter than the value adopted in the literature while the lifetime of the $11/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state agrees well with the previous measurement. In order to get deeper insight into the structure of the states, a shell-model calculation was carried out adopting a microscopic effective interaction derived from the realistic CD-Bonn potential. The comparison between theoretical and experimental data for the low-lying negative-parity states of $^{209}\mathrm{Po}$ supports the reliability of the predicted wave functions, which are found to be dominated by the coupling of a neutron hole to the yrast states of $^{210}\mathrm{Po}$. However, it also points to the important role played by minor wave-function components in describing the reduced electromagnetic strengths, suggesting the need of additional configuration mixing for achieving a better quantitative agreement.
