The flux ratios of high-ionization lines are commonly assumed to indicate the metallicity of the broad emission line region in luminous quasars. When accounting for the variation in their kinematic profiles, we show that the NV/CIV, (SiIV+OIV])/CIV and NV/Lya line ratios do not vary as a function of the quasar continuum luminosity, black hole mass, or accretion rate. Using photoionization models from CLOUDY , we further show that the observed changes in these line ratios can be explained by emission from gas with solar abundances, if the physical conditions of the emitting gas are allowed to vary over a broad range of densities and ionizing fluxes. The diversity of broad line emission in quasar spectra can be explained by a model with emission from two kinematically distinct regions, where the line ratios suggest that these regions have either very different metallicity or density. Both simplicity and current galaxy evolution models suggest that near-solar abundances, with parts of the spectrum forming in high-density clouds, are more likely. Within this paradigm, objects with stronger outflow signatures show stronger emission from gas which is denser and located closer to the ionizing source, at radii consistent with simulations of line-driven disc-winds. Studies using broad-line ratios to infer chemical enrichment histories should consider changes in density and ionizing flux before estimating metallicities., 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present results of time-series analysis of the first year of the Fairall 9 intensive disc-reverberation campaign. We used Swift and the Las Cumbres Observatory global telescope network to continuously monitor Fairall 9 from X-rays to near-infrared at a daily to subdaily cadence. The cross-correlation function between bands provides evidence for a lag spectrum consistent with the τ ∝ λ4/3 scaling expected for an optically thick, geometrically thin blackbody accretion disc. Decomposing the flux into constant and variable components, the variable component’s spectral energy distribution is slightly steeper than the standard accretion disc prediction. We find evidence at the Balmer edge in both the lag and flux spectra for an additional bound-free continuum contribution that may arise from reprocessing in the broad-line region. The inferred driving light curve suggests two distinct components, a rapidly variable (100 d) component with an opposite lag to the reverberation signal.

Precise spectral diagnostic modelling of H i and He ii recombination spectra can constrain theoretical models that describe many astrophysical environments. Simple analytic expressions are of interest for collisional l-changing rate coefficients that are used by large-scale population modelling codes. We review, clarify, and improve upon the modified Pengelly & Seaton formulae of Guzmán et al. We show that the recent poor results for it shown by Vrinceanu et al. are due to their misinterpretation of its usage. We also detail efficient numerical algorithms which should enable the full quantum mechanical expression for such rate coefficients to be used much more routinely by modelling codes. We illustrate with some collisional-radiative population modelling for hydrogen.

X-ray missions with microcalorimeter technology will resolve spectral features with unprecedented detail. In this work, we improve the H-like Kα energies for elements between 6 ≤ Z ≤ 30 for the release version of the spectral simulation code Cloudy to match laboratory energies. We update the ionization potential (I ion) for these elements and add a fourth-order polynomial to the level energy difference. This brings the release version of Cloudy into a near-perfect agreement with NIST. The updated energies are ∼15–4000 times more precise than that of the current release version of Cloudy (C17.02). These new changes will be a part of the next update to the release version, C17.03.

At intermediate to high densities, electron (de-)excitation collisions are the dominant process for populating or depopulating high Rydberg states. In particular, the accurate knowledge of the energy changing ($n$-changing) collisional rates is determinant for predicting the radio recombination spectra of gaseous nebula. The different datasets present in the literature come either from impact parameter calculations or semi-empirical fits and the rate coefficients agree within a factor of two. We show in this paper that these uncertainties cause errors lower than 5% in the emission of radio recombination lines (RRL) of most ionized plasmas of typical nebulae. However, in special circumstances where the transitions between Rydberg levels are amplified by maser effects, the errors can increase up to 20%. Implementation of a novel experimental approach using a bright source of narrowband x-ray emission has enabled the production of a photoionized argon plasma of relevance to astrophysical modelling codes such as Cloudy. We present results showing that the photoionization parameter ζ = 4πF/ne generated using the VULCAN laser was ≈ 50 erg cm s−1, higher than those obtained previously with more powerful facilities. Comparison of our argon emission-line spectra in the 4.15 - 4.25 Å range at varying initial gas pressures with predictions from the Cloudy code and a simple time-dependent code are also presented. Finally we briefly discuss how this proof-of-principle experiment may be scaled to larger facilities such as ORION to produce the closest laboratory analogue to a photoionized plasma.

The excitation of the filamentary gas structures surrounding giant elliptical galaxies at the center of cool-core clusters, a.k.a BCGs (brightest cluster galaxies), is key to our understanding of active galactic nucleus feedback, and of the impact of environmental and local effects on star formation. We investigate the contribution of the thermal radiation from the cooling flow surrounding BCGs to the excitation of the filaments. We explore the effects of small levels of extra-heating (turbulence), and of metallicity, on the optical and infrared lines. Using the Cloudy code, we model the photoionization and photodissociation of a slab of gas of optical depth AV{\leq}30mag at constant pressure, in order to calculate self-consistently all of the gas phases, from ionized gas to molecular gas. The ionizing source is the EUV and soft X-ray radiation emitted by the cooling gas. We test these models comparing their predictions to the rich multi-wavelength observations, from optical to submillimeter. These models reproduce most of the multi-wavelength spectra observed in the nebulae surrounding the BCGs, not only the LINER-like optical diagnostics: [O iii]{\lambda} 5007 {\AA}/H\b{eta}, [N ii]{\lambda} 6583 {\AA}/H{\alpha} and ([S ii]{\lambda} 6716 {\AA}+[S ii]{\lambda} 6731 {\AA})/H{\alpha} but also the infrared emission lines from the atomic gas. The modeled ro-vib H2 lines also match observations, which indicates that near and mid-IR H2 lines are mostly excited by collisions between H2 molecules and secondary electrons produced naturally inside the cloud by the interaction between the X-rays and the cold gas in the filament. However, there is still some tension between ionized and molecular line tracers (i.e. CO), which requires to optimize the cloud structure and the density of the molecular zone., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We report velocity-delay maps for prominent broad emission lines, Ly_alpha, CIV, HeII and H_beta, in the spectrum of NGC5548. The emission-line responses inhabit the interior of a virial envelope. The velocity-delay maps reveal stratified ionization structure. The HeII response inside 5-10 light-days has a broad single-peaked velocity profile. The Ly_alpha, CIV, and H_beta responses peak inside 10 light-days, extend outside 20 light-days, and exhibit a velocity profile with two peaks separated by 5000 km/s in the 10 to 20 light-day delay range. The velocity-delay maps show that the M-shaped lag vs velocity structure found in previous cross-correlation analysis is the signature of a Keplerian disk with a well-defined outer edge at R=20 light-days. The outer wings of the M arise from the virial envelope, and the U-shaped interior of the M is the lower half of an ellipse in the velocity-delay plane. The far-side response is weaker than that from the near side, so that we see clearly the lower half, but only faintly the upper half, of the velocity--delay ellipse. The delay tau=(R/c)(1-sin(i))=5 light-days at line center is from the near edge of the inclined ring, giving the inclination i=45 deg. A black hole mass of M=7x10^7 Msun is consistent with the velocity-delay structure. A barber-pole pattern with stripes moving from red to blue across the CIV and possibly Ly_alpha line profiles suggests the presence of azimuthal structure rotating around the far side of the broad-line region and may be the signature of precession or orbital motion of structures in the inner disk. Further HST observations of NGC 5548 over a multi-year timespan but with a cadence of perhaps 10 days rather than 1 day could help to clarify the nature of this new AGN phenomenon., 19 pages, 9 figures, ApJ in press

GSN 069 is an ultra-soft X-ray active galactic nucleus that previously exhibited a huge X-ray outburst and a subsequent long-term decay. It has recently presented X-ray quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs). We report the detection of strong nitrogen lines but weak or undetectable carbon lines in its far ultraviolet spectrum. With a detailed photoionization model, we use the C IV/N IV] ratio and other ratios between nitrogen lines to constrain the [C/N] abundance of GSN 069 to be from -3.33 to -1.91. We argue that a partially disrupted red giant star can naturally explain the abnormal C/N abundance in the UV spectrum, while the surviving core orbiting the black hole might produce the QPEs., Comment: 6 pages,5 figures, published in ApJL

We have extended the membership and determined the 3-D structure of the large (0.19 pc) HH~269 sequence of shocks in the Orion Nebula. All of the components lie along a track that is highly tilted to the plane-of-the-sky and emerge from within the Orion-S embedded molecular cloud. Their source is probably either the highly obscured mm 9 source associated with a high N2H+ density core (more likely) or the more distant star COUP 632 (less likely). The former must be located in the Photon Dominated Region (PDR) underlying the ionized surface of the Orion South Cloud, while the latter would be embedded within the cloud. The flows seem to be episodic, with intervals of 1900 to 2600 years or 700 to 2600 years if COUP 632 is the source., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The upcoming X-ray missions based on the microcalorimeter technology require exquisite precision in spectral simulation codes in order to match the unprecedented spectral resolution. In this work, we improve the fluorescence K$\alpha$ energies for Si II-XI and S II-XIII in the code Cloudy. In particular, we provide here a patch to update the Cloudy fluorescence energy table, originally based on Kaastra & Mewe (1993), with the laboratory energies measured by Hell et al. (2016). The new Cloudy simulations were used to model the Chandra/HETG spectra of the High Mass X-ray Binary Vela X-1 previously presented in Amato et al. (2021), showing a remarkable agreement and a dramatic improvement with respect to the current release version of Cloudy (C17.02)., Comment: Published on RNAAS

While this active galactic nucleus was, in part, selected for its historically unobscured nature, we discovered that the X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, and there are new blueshifted, broad, and narrow UV absorption lines, which suggest that a dust-free, ionized obscurer located at the inner broad-line region partially covers the central source. Despite the obscuration, we measure UV and optical continuum reverberation lags consistent with a centrally illuminated Shakura-Sunyaev thin accretion disk, and measure reverberation lags associated with the optical broad-line region, as expected. However, in the first 55 days of the campaign, when the obscuration was becoming most extreme, we observe a de-coupling of the UV continuum and the UV broad emission-line variability. The correlation recovered in the next 42 days of the campaign, as Mrk 817 entered a less obscured state. The short C iv and Lyα lags suggest that the accretion disk extends beyond the UV broad-line region. © 2021. The American Astronomical Society. We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. We suggest that the obscurer is a disk wind triggered by the brightening of NGC 5548 following the decrease in size of the broad-line region during the preceding low-luminosity state., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures, uses aastex62.cls. Dissociation of molecular hydrogen by secondary electrons produced by cosmic ray or X-ray ionization plays a crucial role in the chemistry of the densest part of molecular clouds. Here we study the effect of the mean kinetic energy of secondary electrons on this process. We compare predictions using a range of secondary electron energies and predictions of the cross-sections with the values in the UMIST database. We find that the predicted column densities change by nearly one dex., corrected minor typo

We present geometric and dynamical modeling of the broad line region for the multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign focused on NGC 5548 in 2014. The dataset includes photometric and spectroscopic monitoring in the optical and ultraviolet, covering the H$\beta$, C IV, and Ly$\alpha$ broad emission lines. We find an extended disk-like H$\beta$ BLR with a mixture of near-circular and outflowing gas trajectories, while the C IV and Ly$\alpha$ BLRs are much less extended and resemble shell-like structures. There is clear radial structure in the BLR, with C IV and Ly$\alpha$ emission arising at smaller radii than the H$\beta$ emission. Using the three lines, we make three independent black hole mass measurements, all of which are consistent. Combining these results gives a joint inference of $\log_{10}(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) = 7.64^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$. We examine the effect of using the $V$ band instead of the UV continuum light curve on the results and find a size difference that is consistent with the measured UV-optical time lag, but the other structural and kinematic parameters remain unchanged, suggesting that the $V$ band is a suitable proxy for the ionizing continuum when exploring the BLR structure and kinematics. Finally, we compare the H$\beta$ results to similar models of data obtained in 2008 when the AGN was at a lower luminosity state. We find that the size of the emitting region increased during this time period, but the geometry and black hole mass remain unchanged, which confirms that the BLR kinematics suitably gauge the gravitational field of the central black hole., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

In 2014 the NGC 5548 Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping campaign discovered a two-month anomaly when variations in the absorption and emission lines decorrelated from continuum variations. During this time the soft X-ray part of the intrinsic spectrum had been strongly absorbed by a line-of-sight (LOS) obscurer, which was interpreted as the upper part of a disk wind. Our first paper showed that changes in the LOS obscurer produce the decorrelation between the absorption lines and the continuum. A second study showed that the base of the wind shields the BLR, leading to the emission-line decorrelation. In that study, we proposed the wind is normally transparent with no effect on the spectrum. Changes in the wind properties alter its shielding and affect the SED striking the BLR, producing the observed decorrelations. In this work, we investigate the impact of a translucent wind on the emission lines. We simulate the obscuration using XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST observations to determine the physical characteristics of the wind. We find that a translucent wind can contribute a part of the He II and Fe K? emission. It has a modest optical depth to electron scattering, which explains the fainter far-side emission in the observed velocity delay maps. The wind produces the very broad base seen in the UV emission lines and may also be present in the Fe K? line. Our results highlight the importance of accounting for the effects of such winds in the analysis of the physics of the central engine., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Soft X-ray Spectrometer on board Hitomi, with the unprecedented resolving power of R ∼ 1250, allowed the detection of members of the Fe xxv Kα complex emission spectra from the center of the Perseus Cluster. In this paper, we introduce a novel method of measuring the column density using the optically thin (Case A) to optically thick (Case B) transition for one- and two-electron systems. We compare the Fe xxv K α line ratios computed with CLOUDY with that from the Hitomi observations in the outer region of the Perseus core using collision strengths from different atomic data sets, and obtain good agreement. We also show the effect of turbulence on Fe xxv Kα line ratios and interplay between column density and metallicity. Additionally, we discuss the atomic number dependence of transition probabilities for allowed and unallowed transitions, which causes highly charged He-like systems, such as Fe xxv, to behave fundamentally differently from He i.

We discuss the importance of Fe23+ in determining the line intensities of the Fe xxv Kα complex in an optically thick cloud, and investigate resonant auger destruction (RAD) with CLOUDY. Although initially motivated by the Perseus cluster, our calculations are extended to the wide range of column densities encountered in astronomy. A Fe xxv line photon can change/lose its identity upon absorption by three-electron iron as a result of “line interlocking.” This may lead to the autoionization of the absorbing ion, ultimately destroying the Fe xxv Kα photon by RAD. Out of the four members in the Fe xxv Kα complex, a significant fraction of the x line photons are absorbed by Fe23+ and destroyed, causing the x line intensity to decrease. For example, at a hydrogen column density of 1025 cm−2, ∼32% of x photons are destroyed due to RAD while w is mostly unaffected. The line intensity of y is slightly (≤2%) reduced. z is not directly affected by RAD, but the contrasting behavior between z and x line intensities points toward the possible conversion of a tiny fraction (∼2%) of x photons into z photons. The change in line intensities due to electron scattering escape off fast thermal electrons is also discussed.

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the brightest cluster galaxy Hydra-A, a nearby ($z=0.054$) giant elliptical galaxy with powerful and extended radio jets. The observations reveal CO(1-0), CO(2-1), $^{13}$CO(2-1), CN(2-1), SiO(5-4), HCO$^{+}$(1-0), HCO$^{+}$(2-1), HCN(1-0), HCN(2-1), HNC(1-0) and H$_{2}$CO(3-2) absorption lines against the galaxy's bright and compact active galactic nucleus. These absorption features are due to at least 12 individual molecular clouds which lie close to the centre of the galaxy and have velocities of approximately $-50$ to $+10$ km/s relative to its recession velocity, where positive values correspond to inward motion. The absorption profiles are evidence of a clumpy interstellar medium within brightest cluster galaxies composed of clouds with similar column densities, velocity dispersions and excitation temperatures to those found at radii of several kpc in the Milky Way. We also show potential variation in a $\sim 10$ km/s wide section of the absorption profile over a two year timescale, most likely caused by relativistic motions in the hot spots of the continuum source which change the background illumination of the absorbing clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows provide an unique opportunity to study the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies at high-redshift. The GRB-DLAs (damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers) contain a large neutral hydrogen column density, N(H I), and are observed against the GRB afterglow. A large fraction of GRB-DLAs show presence of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) which is an indicator of star-formation. Hence it is important to study those GRB-DLAs which have H$_2$ lines to decipher and understand their physical conditions. The GRB-DLAs 121024A and 120815A, situated at redshift 2.30 and 2.36 respectively, are two such important H$_2$-bearing GRB-DLAs. Besides H$_2$, these two GRB-DLAs also show many metal lines. In this work we have carried out a detail numerical study on the H$_2$ lines, as well as on those metal lines, in GRB-DLAs 121024A and 120815A self-consistently. We use the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY for this study. This modeling helps us to determine the underlying physical conditions which give rise such lines and hence to understand these two GRB-DLAs in much more detail than any other previous investigation. We find that the hydrogen densities for these two H$_2$-bearing DLAs are $\geq$ 60 cm$^{-3}$. Moreover our study infers that the linear sizes are $\leq 17.7$ pc for these two GRB-DLAs, and the mean gas temperatures averaged over the cloud thickness, are $\leq$ 140 K., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables. Studies measuring the chemical abundances of the neutral gas in star-forming galaxies (SFGs) require ionization correction factors (ICFs) to accurately measure their metal contents. In the work presented here we calculate newly improved ICFs for a sample of SFGs. These new corrections include both the contaminating ionized gas along the line of sight (ICF$_{\rm ionized}$) and unaccounted higher ionization stages in the neutral gas (ICF$_{\rm neutral}$). We make use of recently acquired spectroscopic observations taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board Hubble to measure column densities for Fe II and Fe III. Using the Fe III/Fe II ratios as well as other physical properties (i.e. $\log$[L$_{\rm UV}$], $N$(H I), T, and $Z$) we generate ad-hoc photoionization models with CLOUDY to quantify the corrections required for each of the targets. We identify a luminosity threshold of $\log$[L$_{\rm UV}$]$\sim$ 40.75 erg s$^{-1}$ above which the ICF$_{\rm neutral}$ values for nitrogen are relatively higher (ICF$_{\rm neutral}=0.05$-0.7) than those for the rest of the elements (ICF$_{\rm neutral}\sim 0.01$). This behavior indicates that for the high UV luminosity objects, N II is found in non-negligible quantities in the neutral gas, making these ICF$_{\rm neutral}$ corrections critical for determining the true abundances in the interstellar medium. In addition, we calculate ICFs from a uniform grid of models covering a wide range of physical properties typically observed in studies of SFGs and extragalactic H II regions. Recent improvements to atomic energy-level data allow, for the first time, accurate predictions to be made for the Fe III line emission strengths in the spectra of luminous, $L_\text{bol}=10^{46}-10^{48}$ erg/s, Active Galactic Nuclei. The Fe III emitting gas must be primarily photoionized, consistent with observations of line reverberation. We use CLOUDY models exploring a wide range of parameter space, together with 26,500 rest-frame ultraviolet spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to constrain the physical conditions of the line emitting gas. The observed Fe III emission is best accounted for by dense ($n_H=10^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$) gas which is microturbulent, leading to smaller line optical depths and fluorescent excitation. Such high density gas appears to be present in the central regions of the majority of luminous quasars. Using our favoured model, we present theoretical predictions for the relative strengths of the Fe III UV34 $\lambda\lambda$1895,1914,1926 multiplet. This multiplet is blended with the Si III] $\lambda$1892 and C III] $\lambda$1909 emission lines and an accurate subtraction of UV34 is essential when using these lines to infer information about the physics of the broad line region in quasars., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, plus appendices

The unusual behavior of the spectral lines of NGC5548 during the STORM campaign demonstrated a missing piece in the structure of AGNs. For a two-month period in the middle of the campaign, the spectral lines showed a deficit in flux and a reduced response to the variations of the UV continuum. This was the first time that this behavior was unequivocally observed in an AGN. Our previous papers explained this as being due to a variable disk-wind which acts as a shield and alters the SED. Here we use Cloudy to create an atlas of photoionization models for a variety of disk-winds to study their effects on the SED. We show that the winds have three different cases: Case 1 winds are transparent, fully ionized and have minimal effects on the intrinsic SED, although they can produce some line emission, especially HeIIor FeK{\alpha}. We propose that this is the situation in most of the AGNs. Case 2 winds have a He++-He+ionization-front, block part of the XUV continuum but transmit much of the Lyman continuum. They lead to the observed abnormal behavior. Case 3 winds have H+ionization-front and block much of the Lyman continuum. The results show that the presence of the winds has important effects on the spectral lines of AGNs. They will thus have an effect on the measurements of the black hole mass and the geometry of the AGN. The great power offered by photoionization models of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) emission-line regions has long been mitigated by the fact that very little is known about the spectral energy distribution (SED) between the Lyman limit, where intervening absorption becomes a problem, and 0.3 keV, where soft x-ray observations become possible. The emission lines themselves can, to some degree, be used to probe the SED, but only in the broadest terms. This paper employs a new generation of theoretical SEDs which are internally self-consistent, energy-conserving, and tested against observations, to infer properties of the emission-line regions. The SEDs are given as a function of the Eddington ratio, allowing emission-line correlations to be investigated on a fundamental basis. We apply the simplest possible tests, based on the foundations of photoionization theory, to investigate the implications for the geometry of the emission-line region. The SEDs become more far-ultraviolet bright as the Eddington ratio increases, so the equivalent widths of recombination lines should also become larger, an effect which we quantify. The observed lack of correlation between Eddington ratio and equivalent width shows that the cloud covering factor must decrease as Eddington ratio increases. This would be consistent with recent models proposing that the broad-line region is a failed dusty wind off the accretion disc., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The EUV provides most of the ionization that creates the high equivalent width (EW) broad and narrow emission lines (BELs, NELs) of quasars. Spectra of Hypermassive Schwarzschild black holes (HMBHs, $M_{BH} \geq 10^{10} M_{\odot}$) with $\alpha$-discs, decline rapidly in the EUV suggesting much lower EWs. Model spectra for black holes of mass $10^{6}-10^{12} M_{\odot}$ and accretion rates $0.03 \leq L_{bol}/L_{edd} \leq 1.0$ were input to the CLOUDY photoionization code. BELs become $\sim$100 times weaker in EW from $M_{BH} \sim 10^8 M_{\odot}$ to $M_{BH} \sim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$. The high ionization BELs (O VI 1034 $\overset{\circ}{\mathrm {A}}$, C IV 1549 $\overset{\circ}{\mathrm {A}}$, He II 1640 $\overset{\circ}{\mathrm {A}}$) decline in EW from ($M_{BH} \geq 10^6 M_{\odot}$, reproducing the Baldwin effect, but regain EW for $M_{BH} \geq 10^{10} M_{\odot}$). The low ionization lines (MgII 2798 $\overset{\circ}{\mathrm {A}}$, H$\beta$ 4861 $\overset{\circ}{\mathrm {A}}$ and H$\alpha$ 6563 $\overset{\circ}{\mathrm {A}}$) remain weak. Lines for maximally spinning HMBHs behave similarly. Line ratio diagrams for the BELs show that high OVI/H$\beta$ and low CIV/H$\alpha$ may pick out HMBH, although OVI is often hard to observe. In NEL BPT diagrams HMBHs lie among star-forming regions, except for highly spinning, high accretion rate HMBHs. In summary, the BELs expected from HMBHs would be hard to detect using the current optical facilities. From 100 to $10^{12} M_{\odot}$, the emission lines used to detect AGN only have high EW in the $10^6 - 10^9 M_{\odot}$ window, where most AGN are found. Understanding the Fe II emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been a grand challenge for many decades. The rewards from understanding the AGN spectra would be immense, involving both quasar classification schemes such as “Eigenvector 1” and tracing the chemical evolution of the cosmos. Recently, three large Fe II atomic data sets with radiative and electron collisional rates have become available. We have incorporated these into the spectral synthesis code Cloudy and examined predictions using a new generation of AGN spectral energy distribution (SED), which indicates that the ultraviolet (UV) emission can be quite different depending on the data set utilized. The Smyth et al. data set better reproduces the observed Fe II template of the I ZW 1 Seyfert galaxy in the UV and optical regions, and we adopt these data. We consider both thermal and microturbulent clouds and show that a microturbulence of ≈100 km s−1 reproduces the observed shape and strength of the so-called Fe II “UV bump.” Comparing our predictions to the observed Fe II template, we derive a typical cloud density of 1011 cm−3 and photon flux of 1020 cm−2 s−1, and show that these largely reproduce the observed Fe II emission in the UV and optical. We calculate the I(Fe II)/I(Mg II) emission-line intensity ratio using our best-fitting model and obtain log(I(Fe II)/I(Mg II)) ∼ 0.7, suggesting many AGNs have a roughly solar Fe/Mg abundance ratio. Finally, we vary the Eddington ratio and SED shape as a step in understanding the Eigenvector 1 correlation.

Absorption and emission lines of the iron-peak species Fe II are prominent in the infrared, optical and ultraviolet spectra of a myriad of astrophysical sources, requiring extensive and highly reliable sets of atomic structure and collisional data for an accurate quantitative analysis. However, comparisons among existing calculations reveal large discrepancies in the effective collision strengths, often up to factors of three, highlighting the need for further steps towards new converged calculations. Here we report a new 20 configuration, 6069 level atomic structure model, calculated using the multi-configurational Dirac-Fock method. Collision strengths and effective collision strengths are presented, for a wide range of temperatures of astrophysical relevance, from substantial 262 level and 716 level Dirac R-matrix calculations, plus a 716 level Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculation. Convergence of the scattering calculations is discussed, and results are critically compared with existing data in the literature, providing us with error estimates for our data. As a consequence, we assign an uncertainty of ±15% to relevant forbidden and allowed transitions encompassed within a 50 level subset of the 716 level Dirac R-matrix dataset. To illustrate the implications of our new datasets for the analysis of astronomical observations of Fe II, they are incorporated into the Cloudy modelling code, sample Fe II spectra are generated and compared.

SiO emission lines are important probes of chemical processes in diverse astrophysical environments, commonly observed in shocks associated with the outflows of young stellar objects, both low- and high-mass, and in the envelopes of evolved stars. Modelling SiO emission for conditions of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) requires collisional rate coefficients due to H2, H, and He impact, with the first of these of limited availability. Unknown collisional rate coefficients are often estimated from known systems. For the case of SiO-H2, rate coefficients have previously been adapted from a different collider, He, based on a reduced-mass scaling approach. Here, we construct comprehensive SiO collisional rate coefficients data with multiple colliders (H2, He and H) and rovibrational transitions up to v = 5 and J = 39 . A reduced-potential scaling approach is used to estimate unknown collisional data. Using RADEX and Cloudy, we investigate the rotational and rovibrational SiO emission in various astrophysical environments, including photodissociation regions (PDR) and the envelope of VY Canis Majoris.

Based on prior precision photometry and cluster age analysis, the bright star GSC 00154−01819 is a possible young pre-main sequence member of the Rosette cluster, NGC 2244. As part of a comprehensive study of the large-scale structure of the Rosette and its excitation by the cluster stars, we noted this star as a potential backlight for a probe of the interstellar medium and extinction along the sight line towards a distinctive nebular feature projected on to the cluster centre. New high-resolution spectra of the star were taken with the University College London Echelle Spectrograph of the AAT. They reveal that rather than being a reddened spectral type B or A star within the Mon OB2 association, it is a nearby, largely unreddened, solar twin of spectral type G2V less than 180 Myr old. It is about 219 pc from the Sun with a barycentric radial velocity of +14.35 ± 1.99 km s−1. The spectrum of the Rosette behind it and along this line of sight shows a barycentric radial velocity of +26.0 ± 2.4 km s−1 in H α, and a full width at half-maximum velocity dispersion of 61.94 ± 1.38 km s−1.

To advance our understanding of the fuelling and feedback processes which power the Universe's most massive black holes, we require a significant increase in our knowledge of the molecular gas which exists in their immediate surroundings. However, the behaviour of this gas is poorly understood due to the difficulties associated with observing it directly. We report on a survey of 18 brightest cluster galaxies lying in cool cores, from which we detect molecular gas in the core regions of eight via carbon monoxide (CO), cyanide (CN) and silicon monoxide (SiO) absorption lines. These absorption lines are produced by cold molecular gas clouds which lie along the line of sight to the bright continuum sources at the galaxy centres. As such, they can be used to determine many properties of the molecular gas which may go on to fuel supermassive black hole accretion and AGN feedback mechanisms. The absorption regions detected have velocities ranging from -45 to 283 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy, and have a bias for motion towards the host supermassive black hole. We find that the CN N = 0 - 1 absorption lines are typically 10 times stronger than those of CO J = 0 - 1. This is due to the higher electric dipole moment of the CN molecule, which enhances its absorption strength. In terms of molecular number density CO remains the more prevalent molecule with a ratio of CO/CN $\sim 10$, similar to that of nearby galaxies. The 180-day Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping campaign on NGC 5548 discovered an anomalous period, the broad-line region (BLR) holiday, in which the emission lines decorrelated from the continuum variations. This is important since the correlation between the continuum-flux variations and the emission-line response is the basic assumption for black hole (BH) mass determinations through reverberation mapping. During the BLR holiday, the high-ionization intrinsic absorption lines also decorrelated from the continuum as a result of variable covering factor of the line of sight (LOS) obscurer. The emission lines are not confined to the LOS, so this does not explain the BLR holiday. If the LOS obscurer is a disk wind, its streamlines must extend down to the plane of the disk and the base of the wind would lie between the BH and the BLR, forming an equatorial obscurer. This obscurer can be transparent to ionizing radiation, or can be translucent, blocking only parts of the SED, depending on its density. An emission-line holiday is produced if the wind density increases only slightly above its transparent state. Both obscurers are parts of the same wind, so they can have associated behavior in a way that explains both holidays. A very dense wind would block nearly all ionizing radiation, producing a Seyfert 2 and possibly providing a contributor to the changing-look AGN phenomenon. The flux variations in the emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are driven by variations in the ionizing continuum flux --which are usually reflected in the observable UV-optical continuum. The "Reverberation mapping" technique measures the delay between line and continuum variations to determine the size of the line emitting region, this is the basis for measurements of the central black hole mass in AGNs. The Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Project (AGN STORM) on NGC 5548 in 2014 is the most intensive multi-wavelength AGN monitoring campaign ever. For most of the campaign, the emission-line variations followed changes in the continuum with a time lag, as expected. However, the lines varied independently of the observed UV-optical continuum during a 60 -- 70 day "holiday." To understand this remarkable phenomenon, we study the intrinsic absorption lines present in NGC 5548. We identify a novel cycle that reproduces the absorption line variability and thus identify the physics that allows the holiday to occur. In our model, variations in this obscurer's line-of-sight covering factor modify the soft X-ray continuum. This leads to changes in the ionization of helium gas in the broad-line region. Ionizing radiation produced by recombining helium then affects the ionization of other species as observed during the AGN STORM holiday. It is likely that any other model which selectively changes the soft X-ray part of the continuum during the holiday can also explain the anomalous emission line behavior observed., Comment: This is the version accepted by ApJ. Swift intensive accretion disk reverberation mapping of four AGN yielded light curves sampled $\sim$200-350 times in 0.3-10 keV X-ray and six UV/optical bands. Uniform reduction and cross-correlation analysis of these datasets yields three main results: 1) The X-ray/UV correlations are much weaker than those within the UV/optical, posing severe problems for the lamp-post reprocessing model in which variations in a central X-ray corona drive and power those in the surrounding accretion disk. 2) The UV/optical interband lags are generally consistent with $ \tau \propto \lambda^{4/3} $ as predicted by the centrally illuminated thin accretion disk model. While the average interband lags are somewhat larger than predicted, these results alone are not inconsistent with the thin disk model given the large systematic uncertainties involved. 3) The one exception is the U band lags, which are on average a factor of $\sim$2.2 larger than predicted from the surrounding band data and fits. This excess appears due to diffuse continuum emission from the broad-line region (BLR). The precise mixing of disk and BLR components cannot be determined from these data alone. The lags in different AGN appear to scale with mass or luminosity. We also find that there are systematic differences between the uncertainties derived by javelin vs. more standard lag measurement techniques, with javelin reporting smaller uncertainties by a factor of 2.5 on average. We have used existing optical emission and absorption lines, [C II] emission lines, and H I absorption lines to create a new model for a Central Column of material near the Trapezium region of the Orion Nebula. This was necessary because recent high spectral resolution spectra of optical emission lines and imaging spectra in the [C II] 158 micron line have shown that there are new velocity systems associated with the foreground Veil and the material lying between Theta 1 Ori C and the Main Ionization Front of the nebula. When a family of models generated with the spectral synthesis code Cloudy were compared with the surface brightness of the emission lines and strengths of the Veil absorption lines seen in the Trapezium stars, distances from Theta 1 Ori C, were derived, with the closest, highest ionization layer being 1.3 pc. The line of sight distance of this layer is comparable with the size of the inner Huygens Region in the plane of the sky. These layers are all blueshifted with respect to the Orion Nebula Cluster of stars, probably because of the pressure of a hot central bubble created by Theta 1 Ori C's stellar wind. We find velocity components that are ascribed to both sides of this bubble. Our analysis shows that the foreground [C II] 158 micron emission is part of a previously identified layer that forms a portion of a recently discovered expanding shell of material covering most of the larger Extended Orion Nebula., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Multi-phase filamentary structures around Brightest Cluster Galaxies are likely a key step of AGN-feedback. We observed molecular gas in 3 cool cluster cores: Centaurus, Abell S1101, and RXJ1539.5 and gathered ALMA and MUSE data for 12 other clusters. Those observations show clumpy, massive and long, 3--25 kpc, molecular filaments, preferentially located around the radio bubbles inflated by the AGN (Active Galactic Nucleus). Two objects show nuclear molecular disks. The optical nebula is certainly tracing the warm envelopes of cold molecular filaments. Surprisingly, the radial profile of the H$\alpha$/CO flux ratio is roughly constant for most of the objects, suggesting that (i) between 1.2 to 7 times more cold gas could be present and (ii) local processes must be responsible for the excitation. Projected velocities are between 100--400 km s$^{-1}$, with disturbed kinematics and sometimes coherent gradients. This is likely due to the mixing in projection of several thin unresolved filaments. The velocity fields may be stirred by turbulence induced by bubbles, jets or merger-induced sloshing. Velocity and dispersions are low, below the escape velocity. Cold clouds should eventually fall back and fuel the AGN. We compare the filament's radial extent, r$_{fil}$, with the region where the X-ray gas can become thermally unstable. Active galactic nuclei play a crucial role in the accretion and ejection of gas in galaxies. Although their outflows are well studied, finding direct evidence of accretion has proved very difficult and has so far been done for very few sources. A promising way to study the significance of cold accretion is by observing the absorption of an active galactic nucleus's extremely bright radio emission by the cold gas lying along the line-of-sight. As such, we present ALMA CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) observations of the Hydra-A brightest cluster galaxy (z=0.054) which reveal the existence of cold, molecular gas clouds along the line-of-sight to the galaxy's extremely bright and compact mm-continuum source. They have apparent motions relative to the central supermassive black hole of between -43 and -4 km s$^{-1}$ and are most likely moving along stable, low ellipticity orbits. The identified clouds form part of a $\sim$$10^{9}$ $\text{M}_{\odot}$, approximately edge-on disc of cold molecular gas. With peak CO(2-1) optical depths of $\tau$=0.88 $^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$, they include the narrowest and by far the deepest absorption of this type which has been observed to date in a brightest cluster galaxy. By comparing the relative strengths of the lines for the most strongly absorbing region, we are able to estimate a gas temperature of $42^{+25}_{-11}$ K and line-of-sight column densities of $N_{CO}=2^{+3}_{-1}\times 10 ^{17} cm^{-2}$ and $N_{ H_{2} }=7^{+10}_{-4}\times 10 ^{20} cm^{-2}$., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We have recently initiated the first spectroscopic dust reverberation programme on active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the near-infrared. Spectroscopy enables measurement of dust properties, such as flux, temperature and covering factor, with higher precision than photometry. In particular, it enables measurement of both luminosity-based dust radii and dust response times. Here we report results from a one-year campaign on NGC 5548. The hot dust responds to changes in the irradiating flux with a lag time of ~70 light-days, similar to what was previously found in photometric reverberation campaigns. The mean and rms spectra are similar, implying that the same dust component dominates both the emission and the variations. The dust lag time is consistent with the luminosity-based dust radius only if we assume a wavelength-independent dust emissivity-law, i.e. a blackbody, which is appropriate for grains of large sizes (of a few microns). For such grains the dust temperature is ~1450 K. Therefore, silicate grains have most likely evaporated and carbon is the main chemical component. But the hot dust is not close to its sublimation temperature, contrary to popular belief. This is further supported by our observation of temperature variations largely consistent with a heating/cooling process. Therefore, the inner dust-free region is enlarged and the dusty torus rather a "dusty wall", whose inner radius is expected to be luminosity-invariant. The dust-destruction mechanism that enlarges the dust-free region seems to partly affect also the dusty region. Here we present a critical view of practical problems in the analysis of optical Fe II emission lines of Type 1 AGN spectra. Besides the very complex and unclear physical interpretation of the Fe II template shape, there are other issues that might affect the results of Fe II contribution as well (like the S/N, the AGN continuum component modelling, the complex shapes of other broad and narrow emission lines that are blending in the same part of the spectrum, the galactic host stellar component that could lead to mimicking of the Fe II template shape on some parts of spectrum, etc.). In this paper we concentrate particularly on the claims of possibility that in some objects Fe II could be strongly shifted to the red. Future microcalorimeter X-ray observations will resolve spectral features in unmatched detail. Understanding the line formation processes in the X-rays deserves much attention. The purpose of this paper is to discuss such processes in the presence of a photoionizing source. Line formation processes in one and two-electron species are broadly categorized into four cases. Case A occurs when the Lyman line optical depths are very small and photoexcitation does not occur. Line photons escape the cloud without any scattering. Case B occurs when the Lyman-line optical depths are large enough for photons to undergo multiple scatterings. Case C occurs when a broadband continuum source strikes an optically thin cloud. The Lyman lines are enhanced by induced radiative excitation of the atoms/ions by continuum photons, also known as continuum pumping. A fourth less-studied scenario, where the Case B spectrum is enhanced by continuum pumping, is called Case D. Here, we establish the mathematical foundation of Cases A, B, C, and D in an irradiated cloud with Cloudy. We also show the total X-ray emission spectrum for all four cases within the energy range 0.1 - 10 keV at the resolving power of XRISM around 6 keV. Additionally, we show that a combined effect of electron scattering and partial blockage of continuum pumping reduces the resonance line intensities. Such reduction increases with column density and can serve as an important tool to measure the column density/optical depth of the cloud., accepted for publication in ApJ, comments are welcome

The cosmic-ray ionization rate ($\zeta$, s$^{-1}$) plays an important role in the interstellar medium. It controls ion-molecular chemistry and provides a source of heating. Here we perform a grid of calculations using the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY along nine sightlines towards, HD 169454, HD 110432, HD 204827, $\lambda$ Cep, X Per, HD 73882, HD 154368, Cyg OB2 5, Cyg OB2 12. The value of $\zeta$ is determined by matching the observed column densities of H$_3^+$ and H$_2$. The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) affects the free electron density, which changes the H$_3^+$ density and the derived ionization rate. PAHs are ubiquitous in the Galaxy, but there are also regions where PAHs do not exist. Hence, we consider clouds with a range of PAH abundances and show their effects on the H$_3^+$ abundance. We predict an average cosmic-ray ionization rate for H$_2$ ($\zeta$(H$_2$))= (7.88 $\pm$ 2.89) $\times$ 10$^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$ for models with average Galactic PAHs abundances, (PAH/H =10$^{-6.52}$), except Cyg OB2 5 and Cyg OB2 12. The value of $\zeta$ is nearly 1 dex smaller for sightlines toward Cyg OB2 12. We estimate the average value of $\zeta$(H$_2$)= (95.69 $\pm$ 46.56) $\times$ 10$^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$ for models without PAHs.

We establish that there are two velocity systems along lines-of-sight that contribute to the emission-line spectrum of the the brightest parts of the Orion Nebula. These overlie the Orion-S embedded molecular cloud southwest of the dominant ionizing star (Theta1OriC). Examination of 10x10" samples of high spectral resolution emission-line spectra of this region reveals it to be of low ionization, with velocities and ionization different from the central part of the Nebula. These properties jeopardize earlier determinations of abundance and physical conditions since they indicate that this region is much more complex than has been assumed in analyzing earlier spectroscopic studies and argue for use of very high spectral resolution or known simple regions in future studies., 9 pages, 2 figures

We have extended the work of Papers I and II of this series to determine at higher spatial resolution the properties of the embedded Orion-S Molecular Cloud that lies within the ionized cavity of the Orion Nebula and of the thin ionized layer that lies between the Cloud and the observer. This was done using existing and new [NII](658.3 nm) and [OIII] (500.7 nm) spectra that map the central region of the Orion Nebula (the Huygens Region). However, it remains unclear how the surface brightness of the ionized layer on the Orion-S Molecular Cloud and that of a foreground Nearer Ionized Layer are linked, as the observations show they must be. Cosmological models can be constrained by determining primordial abundances. Accurate predictions of the He I spectrum are needed to determine the primordial helium abundance to a precision of $< 1$% in order to constrain Big Bang Nucleosynthesis models. Theoretical line emissivities at least this accurate are needed if this precision is to be achieved. In the first paper of this series, which focused on H I, we showed that differences in $l$-changing collisional rate coefficients predicted by three different theories can translate into 10% changes in predictions for H I spectra. Here we consider the more complicated case of He atoms, where low-$l$ subshells are not energy degenerate. A criterion for deciding when the energy separation between $l$ subshells is small enough to apply energy-degenerate collisional theories is given. Moreover, for certain conditions, the Bethe approximation originally proposed by Pengelly & Seaton (1964) is not sufficiently accurate. We introduce a simple modification of this theory which leads to rate coefficients which agree well with those obtained from pure quantal calculations using the approach of Vrinceanu et al. (2012). We show that the $l$-changing rate coefficients from the different theoretical approaches lead to differences of $\sim 10$% in He I emissivities in simulations of H II regions using spectral code Cloudy., 9 pages, $ figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

High ionization star forming (SF) galaxies are easily identified with strong emission line techniques such as the BPT diagram, and form an obvious ionization sequence on such diagrams. We use a locally optimally emitting cloud model to fit emission line ratios that constrain the excitation mechanism, spectral energy distribution, abundances and physical conditions along the star-formation ionization sequence. Our analysis takes advantage of the identification of a sample of pure star-forming galaxies, to define the ionization sequence, via mean field independent component analysis. Previous work has suggested that the major parameter controlling the ionization level in SF galaxies is the metallicity. Here we show that the observed SF- sequence could alternatively be interpreted primarily as a sequence in the distribution of the ionizing flux incident on gas spread throughout a galaxy. Metallicity variations remain necessary to model the SF-sequence, however, our best models indicate that galaxies with the highest and lowest observed ionization levels (outside the range -0.37 < log [O III]/H\b{eta} < -0.09) require the variation of an additional physical parameter other than metallicity, which we determine to be the distribution of ionizing flux in the galaxy., 41 pages, 17 figures, 9 tables, accepted to MNRAS

We present improved fits to our treatment of suppression of dielectronic recombination at intermediate densities. At low densities, most recombined excited states eventually decay to the ground state, and therefore the total dielectronic recombination rate to all levels is preserved. At intermediate densities, on the other hand, collisions can lead to ionization of higher-lying excited states, thereby suppressing the dielectronic recombination rate. The improved suppression factors presented here, although highly approximate, allow summed recombination rate coefficients to be used to intermediate densities. There have been several technical improvements to our previously presented fits. For H- through B-like ions the activation log densities have been adjusted to better reproduce existing data. For B-, C-, Al-, and Si-like ions secondary autoionization is now included. The treatment of density discontinuity in electron excitations out of ground state H-, He-, and Ne-like ions has been improved. These refined dielectronic recombination suppression factors are used in the most recent version of the plasma simulation code Cloudy. We show how the ionization and emission spectrum change when this physics is included. Although these suppression factors improve the treatment of intermediate densities, they are highly approximate and are not a substitution for a complete collisional-radiative model of the ionization balance.

In this paper we report the experimental implementation of a theoretically-proposed technique for creating a photoionized plasma in the laboratory using X-ray line radiation. Using a Sn laser-plasma to irradiate an Ar gas target, the photoionization parameter, \xi = 4{\pi}F/Ne, reached values of order 50 erg cm/s, where F is the radiation flux in erg/cm2/s. The significance of this is that this technique allows us to mimic effective spectral radiation temperatures in excess of 1 keV. We show that our plasma starts to be collisionally dominated before the peak of the X-ray drive. However, the technique is extendable to higher energy laser systems to create plasmas with parameters relevant to benchmarking codes used to model astrophysical objects., Comment: 10 pages; 8 figures; Physical Review E, in press
