1. Spin distribution measurement for 64Ni + 100Mo at near and above barrier energies

Abstract

Spin distribution measurements were performed for the reaction 64Ni + 100Mo at three beam energies ranging from 230 to 260 MeV. Compound nucleus (CN) spin distributions were obtained channel selective for each evaporation residue populated by the de-excitation cascade. A comparison of the spin distribution at different beam energies indicates that its slope becomes steeper and steeper with increasing beam energy. This change in slope of the spin distribution is mainly due to the onset of fission competition with particle evaporation at higher beam energies.

Abstract

We measured excitation functions for the main transfer channels in the 116Sn+60Ni reaction from above to well below the Coulomb barrier. The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics, detecting the lighter (target-like) ions with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at very forward angles. The comparison between the data and microscopic calculations for the present case and for the previously measured 96Zr+40Ca system, namely superfluid and near closed shells nuclei, should significantly improve our understanding of nucleon-nucleon correlation properties in multinucleon transfer processes.

Abstract

The heavy ion reaction 22Ne+208Pb at 128 MeV of bombarding energy has been studied using the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup at Legnaro National Laboratories. Elastic, inelastic and one nucleon transfer cross sections have been measured. The experimental results are presented in parallel with the analysis on existing data for the unstable 24Ne nucleus, from the reaction 24Ne+208Pb at 182 MeV (measured at SPIRAL with the VAMOS-EXOGAM setup). The β2C charge deformation parameter for both 22Ne and 24Ne has been determined by a DWBA analysis of the experimental angular dis- tributions, showing a strong reduction for 24Ne.

Abstract

The neutron-rich isotopes of tungsten, osmium and platinum have different shapes in their ground states and present also shape transitions phenomena. Spectroscopic information for these nuclei is scarce and often limited to the gamma rays from the decay of isomeric states. For the neutron-rich even-even osmium isotopes 194Os and 198Os, a shape transition between a slightly prolate deformed to an oblate deformed ground state was deduced from the observed level schemes. For the even-even nucleus lying in between, 196Os, no gamma ray transition is known. In order to elucidate the shape transition and to test the nuclear models describing it, this region was investigated through gamma-ray spectroscopy using the AGATA demonstrator and the large acceptance heavy-ion spectrometer PRISMA at LNL, Italy. A two-nucleon transfer from a 198Pt target to a stable 82Se beam was utilized to populate medium-high spin states of 196Os. The analysis method and preliminary results, including the first life-time measurement of isomeric states with AGATA, are presented.

Abstract

The study of the collective properties of nuclear excitations far from stability provides information about the shell structure at extreme conditions. Spectroscopic observables such as the energy or the transition probabilities of the lowest states, in nuclei with large neutron excess, allow to probe the density and isospin dependence of the effective interaction. Indeed, it was recently shown that tensor and three-body forces play an important role in breaking and creating magic numbers. Emblematic is the case of the evolution of the Ni isotopic chain where several features showed up moving from the most neutron rich stable isotope (64Ni) towards the 78Ni nucleus where the large neutron excess coincides with a double shell closure. In this framework, we have recently performed an experiment with the goal to extract the B(E2; 0+ → 2+) value for the 74Ni nucleus in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment: preliminary results are discussed.

Abstract

Isospin mixing induced by the Coulomb interaction has been studied in the compound nucleus 80Zr at T~2 MeV produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction 40Ca+40Ca at Ebeam = 136 MeV. The isospin impurity was measured using the first step of the Giant Dipole Resonance γ decay. The preliminary value of the Coulomb spreading width has been extracted via statistical model analysis of the measured γ spectrum.

Abstract

A measurement of the high-lying states in 208Pb has been made using 17O beams at 20 MeV/u. The gamma decay following inelastic excitation was measured with the detector system AGATA Demonstrator based on segmented HPGe detectors, coupled to an array of large volume LaBr3:Ce scintillators and to an array of Si detectors. Preliminary results in comparison with (γ,γ’) data, for states in the 5-8 MeV energy interval, are presented.

Abstract

The study of the evolution of nuclear shells far from stability provides fundamental information about the shape and symmetry of the nuclear mean field. Nuclei with large neutron/proton ratio allow to probe the density dependence of the effective interaction. Indeed, it was recently shown that tensor and three-body forces play an important role in breaking and creating magic numbers. Of particular interest is the region of 78Ni where the large neutron excess coincides with a double shell closure. We have recently measured the B(E2; 0+ → 2+) of the 74Ni nucleus in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory of the Michigan State University. The 74Ni secondary beam has been produced by fragmentation of 86Kr at 140 AMeV on a thick Be target. Selected radioactive fragments impinged on a secondary 197Au target where the measurement of the emitted γ-rays allows to extract the Coulomb excitation cross section and related structure information. Preliminary B(E2) values do not point towards an enhancement of the transition matrix element and the comparison to what was already measured by Aoi and co-workers in [1] opens new scenarios in the interpretation of the shell evolution of the Z=28 isotopes.

Abstract

Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in 80, 82Se were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In 80Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast (6+1) and (8+1) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 4+1 state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In 82Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast 6+1 state and the yrare 4+2 state and lifetime limits of the yrast (10+1) state and of the 5−1 state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states' wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g9/2 orbital.

Abstract

The transitional nucleus 131Xe is investigated after multinucleon transfer in the 136Xe + 208Pb and 136Xe + 238U reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced γ -Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and as an elusive reaction product in the fusion-evaporation reaction 124Sn(11B,p3n) 131Xe employing the High-efficiency Observatory for γ -Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) γ -ray array coupled to a double-sided silicon strip detector at the University of Cologne, Germany. The level scheme of 131Xe is extended to 5 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at hω¯ ≈ 0.4 MeV along the negative-parity one-quasiparticle νh11/2(α = −1/2) band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z = 54 isotopes and the N = 77 isotones. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the PQM130, SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH, and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. Further calculations in 129−132Xe provide insight into the changing nuclear structure along the Xe chain towards the N = 82 shell closure. Proton occupancy in the π 0h11/2 orbital is found to be decisive for the description of the observed backbending phenomenon.

Abstract

Multinucleon transfer cross sections in the system 40Ca+96Zr have been measured at bombarding energies ranging from the Coulomb barrier to ~ 25% below. Target-like (lighter) recoils in inverse kinematics have been completely identif ed in A,Z and Q-value with the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The experimental slopes of the neutron transfer probabilities at large internuclear separation are consistent with the values derived from the binding energies. A phenomenological interpretation of the transfer probabilities indicates the presence of enhanced values for the even number of neutron transfers.

Abstract

Multinucleon transfer reactions have been investigated in 40Ar+208Pb with the Prisma+Clara set-up. The experimental differential cross sections of different neutron transfer channels have been obtained at three different angular settings taking into account the transmission through the spectrometer. The experimental yields of the excited states have been determined via particle-γ coincidences. In odd Ar isotopes, we reported a signif cant population of 11/2− states, reached via neutron transfer. Their structure matches a stretched conf guration of the valence neutron coupled to vibration quanta.

Abstract

The transitional nuclei Xe-132 and Xe-133 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusionevaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe-136 + 2(08P)b MNT reactions employing the highresolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe-136 + Pt-198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te-130(alpha, xn) Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS gamma-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the J(pi) = (7(-)) and (10+) isomers in Xe-132 and above the 11/2(-) isomer in Xe-133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z = 54 as well as the N = 78 and N = 79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T-1/2 >> mu s) isomer in Xe-133 which closes a gap along the N = isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

Abstract

Neutron-rich isotopes around lead, beyond N = 126, have been studied exploiting the fragmentation of an uranium primary beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. For the first time beta-decay half-lives of Bi-219 and Tl-211,Tl-212,Tl-213 isotopes have been derived. The half-lives have been extracted using a numerical simulation developed for experiments in high-background conditions. Comparison with state of the art models used in r-process calculations is given, showing a systematic underestimation of the experimental values, at variance from close-lying nuclei. Abstract

One of the most exciting subjects in contemporary nuclear physics is the study of nuclei at the limits of stability with respect to particle emission. Recently, there has been an intensive experimental activity in measuring proton decay and a large variety of proton emitters were observed in the region of nuclei with 50 < Z < 82. Very recently, the proton radioactivity from 117La and 121Pr has been identified and the decay rate deviates significantly from calculations assuming spherical configurations, thus indicating the onset of large deformations in the drip line nuclei below Z = 69. Predictions by the microscopicmacroscopicmass model and by relativistic mean field calculations support these experimental results and suggest the position of the proton drip line. The lifetimes of the proton-decaying isomers are extremely sensitive to the orbital angular momentum ` of the emitted proton and can vary over several orders of magnitude when changing the angular momentum of the occupied orbital. The position of certain orbitals at the Fermi surface depends strongly on the beta2 deformation. It is therefore very important to determine the quadrupole deformation of the nuclei at and beyond the proton drip line, in order to locate the orbitals close to the Fermi surface and to estimate the lifetime of the isomers, which is essential when looking for new proton emitters. The deformation of the nuclei at the proton drip line in the A 130 mass region can be experimentally tested by comparing the lifetimes of proton emitters with theoretical predictions and by investigating the level structure of particle bound nuclei close to the drip line. For Z = 57 the proton drip line is predicted to correspond to the isotope 118La. The lightest La nucleus for which spectroscopic information has been published is 124La . This thesis bescribes an experiment realised to identify for the first time excited states of the doubly-odd nucleus 122 57 La65. Another aspect that make particularly interesting a study of these nuclei is a well-established phenomenon in two-quasiparticle rotational bands in odd-odd nuclei: the signature inversion. Despite the observation of signature inversion in many different nuclei, and numerous theoretical interpretations, a satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon has yet to be found. We want verify if the experimental level scheme of 122La is in agreement with the systematics of the other nuclei in this mass region. The common feature relating the studies of these neutron deficient nuclei is that they are populated with extremely low cross section and require special techniques to be identified. The standard efficient way to achieve this is the use of arrays of high-purity germanium detectors coupled to specific ancillary devices for their selection. Our experiment has been performed at the Legnaro National Laboratory (LNL) where heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction 40Ca(@ 200 MeV)+92Mo was performed to establish the scheme of 122La by using the GASP -ray spectrometer in conjunction with the ancillary charged-particle ISIS detector and the Neutron Ring. This experimental set-up led to numerous achievements in the A 130 mass region. Chapter 1 introduces to the physics of the nuclei close and beyond to the proton drip-line. In Chapter 2 we will briey see the various theoretical models created to describe several types of nuclear excitations and discuss in more detail the cranking model. Chapter 3 describes the experimental techniques of -ray spectroscopy and the setup used for the present measurement. In Chapter 4 the steps followed in the sorting of the raw data to produce particle-gated matrices are described, together with the techniques used to select the different reaction channels and to clean the spectra. Chapter 5 shows the systematic features of the rotational bands of the A 130 proton rich odd-odd nuclei. Chapter 6 will be devoted to the construction of the decay scheme and to the spins assignments, performed through the analysis of gated matrices, transition intensities, DCO, and the comparison with the systematics of the La isotopes. Finally, in Chapter 7, the results are discussed in the light of the deduced experimental quantities like single-particle spin alignment, dynamic moments of inertia, signature splitting, and B(M1)=B(E2) branching ratios to assign the Nilsson orbitals to the found bands.

Abstract

The neutron-rich lead isotopes, up to Pb216, have been studied for the first time, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. The observed isomeric states exhibit electromagnetic transition strengths which deviate from state-of-the-art shell-model calculations. It is shown that their complete description demands the introduction of effective three-body interactions and two-body transition operators in the conventional neutron valence space beyond Pb208. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The structure of 105Sn has been investigated through the 50Cr(58Ni,2pn) reaction at a beam energy of 210 MeV. In addition to an extension of the spherical level scheme, a regular sequence of dipole transitions has been found. The experimental results are in agreement with the prediction of Tilted Axis Cranking calculations, which satisfactorily explain the properties of the band.

A Monte Carlo code based on the C++ classes of Geant4 has been developed to meet the requirements of the AGATA project, which has the goal to develop an array of highly segmented high-purity germanium detectors based on the novel concepts of pulse shape analysis and γ-ray tracking. The code has been used to optimize the final geometry of the array and to evaluate realistically its performance under a wide range of experimental conditions. Abstract

Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be used to populate nuclei with relatively large neutron excess. Recently, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, a setup consisting on an efficient γ-ray detection system CLARA coupled to the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, capable of tracking the trajectories of the reaction products, has been assembled. During the first year of activity, the experiments performed with the CLARA-PRISMA setup, have been focused mainly on the nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei. In particular, nuclei around N=20, N=50 and lying in the A∼60 transitional region with N<40, have been investigated. Abstract

The energy spectra and relative transition rates of 176,178,180Os were found to be very similar to the values calculated in the framework of the critical point symmetry X(5). In order to enable more stringent tests, including also absolute transition probabilities, two coincidence RDDS lifetime measurements were performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with the GASP spectrometer using the 152,154Sm(29Si,5n)176,178Os reactions. The deduced transition quadrupole moments in 178Os agree well with the X(5) predictions. For 176Os only preliminary results were obtained so far. These preliminary data support an X(5) like structure also in the case of 176Os. High-spin states in 3674Kr38 were studied using the 40Ca(40Ca,α2p)74Kr fusion evaporation reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV with GAMMASPHERE and MICROBALL and at a beam energy of 185 MeV with EUROBALL and ISIS multi-detector arrays. Lifetimes of the high-spin states for the ground-state band and the favoured negative-parity band have been determined using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. Abstract

High spin studies of A ≈ 60 nuclei have been carried out with EUROBALL. The nuclei of interest were populated in the fusion-evaporation reaction with a 125 MeV 16O beam bombarding a thin 56Fe target. The use of the Recoil Filter Detector and the charged particle detector EUCLIDES resulted in a significant reduction of γ-line widths and facilitated a reaction channel selection. In this article, several new linking transitions of the previously known terminating band in 64Zn are reported. Such bands are also observed in 61Cu and 63Cu. Abstract

We have studied the γ-decay properties of 21Ne up to the limits of the particle emission thresholds in order to establish the band structure. The GASP γ-ray detector array together with the multi-detector array, ISIS, were used for the selection of the reaction channels. The reaction 16O(7Li,pn)21Ne has been studied at E=29 MeV. The observed decays in 21Ne, support the identification of parity doublets with states of opposite parity connected by strong dipole transitions. The behaviour of the octupole deformed bands in 21Ne is interpreted as consisting of an intrinsic reflection asymmetric (4He+16O)-structure with an additional valence neutron in σ- and π-orbitals. Using the same experimental set-up the emission of the light unbound cluster 8Be has been studied in the reaction 18O+13C→31Si→23Ne+8Be. We have studied the reactions 28Si + 24Mg ¯→52Fe→40Ca* + 3α as well as the binary channel 52Fe→40Ca* + 12C*, in order to search for deformed states, which form rotational bands in 40Ca. We observe positive- and negative-parity bands. The negative-parity band is proposed to be a partner of an inversion doublet with the positive-parity states being based on 4p-4h configurations. The properties of the positive-parity states are discussed on the basis of the shell model and the parity doublet on the basis of a cluster model with intrinsic reflection asymmetric shapes. Recently, an intense experimental effort has been devoted to the search of empirical proofs of critical-point symmetries in nuclear structure. These symmetries describe shape-phase transitions and provide parameter-free predictions (up to over-all scale factors) for excitation spectra and B(E2) values. This contribution reports on recent plunger-lifetime measurements ON 102Pd carried out at LNL, Legnaro, with the Cologne plunger apparatus coupled to the GASP spectrometer and using the 92Zr(13C,3n)102Pd reaction at 48 MeV. Abstract

Following the commissioning of the PRISMA large-acceptance spectrometer, installed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), an international nuclear-structure collaboration has started to develop a large $\gamma$ -ray setup to be installed in the target position of the spectrometer. The array is based on the EUROBALL composite CLOVER detectors. In this contribution the CLOVER detector array is described and its expected performance figures discussed. This new setup, by using the high-intensity heavy-ion beams provided by the LNL ALPI linac, will push the study of nuclear structure towards moderately neutron-rich nuclei by means of quasi-elastic and deep inelastic reactions.

Abstract

WOS: 000327494600037, gamma Rays and neutrons, emitted following spontaneous fission of Cf-252, were measured in an AGATA experiment performed at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy. The setup consisted of four AGATA triple cluster detectors (12 36 fold segmented high purity germanium crystals), placed at a distance of 50 cm from the source, and 16 HELENA BaF2 detectors. The aim of the experiment was to study the interaction of neutrons in the segmented high purity germanium detectors of AGATA and to investigate the possibility to discriminate neutrons and gamma rays with the gamma-ray tracking technique. The BaF2 detectors were used for a time measurement, which gave an independent discrimination of neutrons and gamma rays and which was used to optimise the gamma-ray tracking based neutron rejection methods. It was found that standard gamma-ray tracking, without any additional neutron rejection features, eliminates effectively most of the interaction points clue to recoiling Ge nuclei after elastic scattering of neutrons. Standard Cracking rejects also a significant amount of the events due to inelastic scattering of neutrons in the germanium crystals. Further enhancements of the neutron rejection was obtained by setting conditions on the following quantities, which were evaluated for each event by the Cracking algorithm: energy of the first and second interaction point, difference in the calculated incoming direction of the gamma ray, and figure-of-merit value. The experimental results of Cracking with neutron rejection agree rather well with GEANT4 simulations. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract

International audience; Excited states in the mirror nuclei 31P and 31S were populated in the 1p and 1n exit channels of the reaction 20Ne + 12C, at a beam energy of 33 MeV. The 20Ne beam was delivered for the first time by the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Angular correlations of coincident γ-rays and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements were performed using the multi-detector array GASP in conjunction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector. In the observed B(E1) strengths, the isoscalar component, amounting to 24% of the isovector one, provides strong evidence for breaking of the isospin symmetry in the A=31 mass region. Self-consistent beyond mean field calculations using Equation of Motion method based on a chiral potential and including two- and three-body forces reproduce well the experimental B(E1) strengths, reinforcing our conclusion. Coherent mixing from higher-lying states involving the Giant Isovector Monopole Resonance accounts well for the effect observed. The breaking of the isospin symmetry originates from the violation of the charge symmetry of the two- and three-body parts of the potential, only related to the Coulomb interaction.

Abstract

The study of the collective properties of nuclear excitations far from stability provides information about the shell structure at extreme conditions. Spectroscopic ob- servables such as the energy or the transition probabilities of the lowest states, in nuclei with large neutron excess, allow to probe the density and isospin dependence of the ef- fective interaction. Indeed, it was recently shown that tensor and three-body forces play an important role in breaking and creating magic numbers. Emblematic is the case of the evolution of the Ni isotopic chain where several features showed up moving from the most neutron rich stable isotope ( 64 Ni) towards the 78 Ni nucleus where the large neutron excess coincides with a double shell closure. In this framework, we have recently per- formed an experiment with the goal to extract the B(E2; 0 + ! 2 + ) value for the 74 Ni nucleus in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment: preliminary results are discussed.

Abstract

WOS: 000314826000009, The response of AGATA segmented HPGe detectors to gamma rays in the energy range 2-15 MeV was measured. The 15.1 MeV gamma rays were produced using the reaction d(B-11,n gamma)C-12 at E-beam=19.1 MeV, while gamma rays between 2 and 9 MeV were produced using an Am-Be-Fe radioactive source. The energy resolution and linearity were studied and the energy-to-pulse-height conversion resulted to be linear within 0.05%.Experimental interaction multiplicity distributions are discussed and compared with the results of Geant4 simulations. It is shown that the application of gamma-ray tracking allows a suppression of background radiation caused by n-capture in Ge nuclei. Finally the Doppler correction for the 15.1 MeV gamma line, performed using the position information extracted with Pulse-shape analysis is discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

WOS: 000301813500009, A study of the dimensions and performance of a single detector of the future neutron detector array NEDA was performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations, using GEANT4. Two different liquid scintillators were evaluated: the hydrogen based BC501A and the deuterated BC537. The efficiency and the probability that one neutron will trigger a signal in more than one detector were investigated as a function of the detector size. The simulations were validated comparing the results to experimental measurements performed with two existing neutron detectors, with different geometries, based on the liquid scintillator BC501. Abstract

The study of the evolution of nuclear shells far from stability provides fundamental information about the shape and symmetry of the nuclear mean field. Nuclei with large neutron/proton ratio allow to probe the density dependence of the effective interaction. Indeed, it was recently shown that tensor and three-body forces play an important role in breaking and creating magic numbers. Of particular interest is the region of 78 Ni where the large neutron excess coincides with a double shell closure.We have recently measured the B(E 2; 0+ → 2+ ) of the 74 Ni nucleus in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory of the Michigan State University. The 74 Ni secondary beam has been produced by fragmentation of 86 Kr at 140 AMeV on a thick Be target. Selected radioactive fragments impinged on a secondary 197 Au target where the measurement of the emitted γ -rays allows to extract the Coulomb excitation cross section and related structure information. Preliminary B(E2) values do not point towards an enhancement of the transition matrix element and the comparison to what was already measured by Aoi and co-workers in [1] opens new scenarios in the interpretation of the shell evolution of the Z=28 isotopes.
