Abstract

The full LEP-1 data set collected with the ALEPH detector at the $Z$ pole during 1991-1995 is analysed in order to measure the $\tau$ decay branching fractions. Extensive systematic studies are performed, in order to match the large statistics of the data sample corresponding to over 300 000 measured and identified $\tau$ decays. Branching fractions are obtained for the two leptonic channels and eleven hadronic channels defined by their respective numbers of charged particles and $\pi^0$'s. Using previously published ALEPH results on final states with charged and neutral kaons, corrections are applied to the hadronic channels to derive branching ratios for exclusive final states without kaons. Thus the analyses of the full LEP-1 ALEPH data are combined to yield a complete description of $\tau$ decays, encompassing 22 non-strange and 11 strange hadronic modes. Some physics implications of the results are given, in particular related to universality in the leptonic charged weak current, isospin invariance in $a_1$ decays, and the separation of vector and axial-vector components of the total hadronic rate. Finally, spectral functions are determined for the dominant hadronic modes and updates are given for several analyses. These include: tests of isospin invariance between the weak charged and electromagnetic hadronic currents, fits of the $\rho$ resonance lineshape, and a QCD analysis of the nonstrange hadronic decays using spectral moments, yielding the value $\alpha_s(m^2_\tau) = 0.340 \pm 0.005_{\rm exp} \pm 0.014_{\rm th}$. The evolution to the $Z$ mass scale yields $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1209 \pm 0.0018$. This value agrees well with the direct determination from the $Z$ width and provides the most accurate test to date of asymptotic freedom in the QCD gauge theory., Comment: 139 pages, 75 figures, submitted to Physics Reports

Abstract

A search for B0s oscillations is performed using a sample of semileptonic b-hadron decays collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991-1995. Compared to previous inclusive lepton analyses, the proper time resolution and b-flavour mistag rate are significantly improved. Additional sensitivity to B0s mixing is obtained by identifying subsamples of events having a B0s purity which is higher than the average for the whole data sample. Unbinned maximum likelihood amplitude fits are performed to derive a lower limit of Deltam_s>9.5ps^-1 at 95% CL. Combining with the ALEPH D-s based analyses yields Deltam_s>9.6ps^-1 at 95% CL., 23 pages, 10 figures

All ALEPH measurements of branching ratios of tau decays involving kaons are summarized including a combination of results obtained with K^0_S and K^0_L detection. The decay dynamics are studied, leading to the determination of contributions from vector K^*(892) and K^{*}(1410), and axial-vector K_1(1270) and K_1(1400) resonances. Agreement with isospin symmetry is observed among the different final states. Under the hypothesis of the conserved vector current, the spectral function for the K\bar{K}\pi mode is compared with the corresponding cross section for low energy e^+e^- annihilation, yielding an axial-vector fraction of (94^{+6}_{-8})% for this mode. The branching ratio for tau decay into all strange final states is determined to be B(\tau^-\to X^-(S=-1)\nu_\tau)=(28.7\pm1.2)\times 10^{-3}. The measured mass spectra of the strange tau decay modes are exploited to derive the S=-1 spectral function. A combination of strange and nonstrange spectral functions is used to determine the strange quark mass and nonperturbative contributions to the strange hadronic width. A method is developed to avoid the bad convergence of the spin zero hadronic component, with the result m_s(M_\tau^2)=(176^{+46}_{-57}) MeV/c^2. The evolution down to 1 GeV gives m_s(1 {GeV}^2) = (234^{+61}_{-76}) MeV/c^2., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

The data recorded by the ALEPH experiment at LEP at centre-of-mass energies of 161 GeV and 172 GeV were analysed to search for sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of leptons. No evidence for the production of these particles was found. The number of candidates observed is consistent with the background expected from four-fermion processes and gammagamma-interactions. Abstract

The production of W+W- pairs is analysed in a data sample collected by ALEPH at a mean centre-of-mass energy of 182.7 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 57 pb-1. Cross sections are given for different topologies of W decays into leptons or hadrons. Under Standard Model assumptions for the W-pair production and decay, the W-pair cross section is measured to be 15.57+-0.62(stat.)+-0.29(syst.) pb. Using also the W-pair data samples collected by ALEPH at lower centre-of-mass energies, the decay branching ratio of the W boson into hadrons is measured to be B(W->hadrons)= 68.93+-1.21(stat.)+-0.51(syst.)%, allowing a determination of the CKM matrix element |Vcs|= 1.043 +- 0.058(stat.) +- 0.026(syst.). The agreement of the cross sections with the Standard Model prediction allows a limit to be set on the W decay rate to undetectable final states., 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The present thesis is focused on the measurement of the form factors of the K+ → e+νeγ decay (Ke2γ) with data collected by the NA62 experiment in 2007 during a preliminary phase of data taking, dedicated to a precision test of lepton flavour universality. For this phase, the NA62 collaboration used the pre-existing apparatus of the NA48/2 experiment. The measurement of the form factors is a test for the effective theories of strong interaction at low energies as the Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and the Light Front Quark Model (LFQM). The only kinematic configuration accessible to the analysis is the structure-dependent configuration in which the photon is emitted preferentially with positive helicity (SD+ term). The measurement of the Ke2γ form factors is obtained by analysing 11170 reconstructed Ke2γ(SD+) candidates with 4% background contamination, about ten times the statistics collected by earlier experiments. The final result of the analysis, assuming ChPT at O(p6), is: FV (0) + FA(0) = 0.127 ± 0.002stat ± 0.010syst λ = 0.60 ± 0.05stat ± 0.39syst The LFQMprediction of the form factors was also tested but it was found to be completely inconsistent with data.
