The synthesis and characterization of tetrakis[4(4-acetlyphenoxy)phthalocyanato] cobalt (II) (1) are presented. Complex 1 together with the reported tetrakis dimethyl 5-(phenoxy)-isophthalatephthalocyaninato] cobalt (II) (2) are conjugated to carbon-based nanomaterials: graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) via π-π stacking, taking advantage of the π electrons on the graphitic structure of the nanomaterial as well as on the aromatic rings of the Co phthalocyanines (CoPcs). The electrocatalytic behaviour of the CoPcs, GQDs, SWCNTs and their respective conjugates towards the electrochemical oxidation of catechol was studied. The electrocatalytic probes were drop-dried onto the electrode surface of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The electrochemical oxidation of catechol was studied using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. Complex 2 when linked to GQDs gave the lowest oxidation peak potentials of 0.33 V. Low catechol detection limits (LOD) of 0.057 µM was obtained for complex 2 with SWCNT. Thus, complex 2 containing more oxygen atoms outperformed complex 1 with less oxygen atoms. The CoPcs on their own showed moderate electrocatalytic behaviour, hence showing the importance of conjugating them to the carbon nanomaterials. SWCNT-based electrodes performed better than GQDs, and an improvement in the LoDs, sensitivity and the catalytic rate was observed upon conjugation.

The synthesis and characterization of a novel 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric-acid-substituted N-confused porphyrin (NCP-TB) is reported, along with a study of its photodynamic activity against MCF-7 cells using 530 (110 mW cm−2) and 660 nm (280 mW cm−2) Thorlabs light-emitting diodes for 30 min. The singlet oxygen quantum yield for NCP-TB is 0.38 compared to 0.23 for the parent unsubstituted N-confused porphyrin (NCP) due to the presence of a sulfur atom. NCP-TB exhibits enhanced PDT activity compared to NCP at both wavelengths. A significantly lower IC50 value of 5.2 μM was obtained at 530 nm (14.7 μM at 660 nm) despite a smaller light dose, due to a large red shift of the intense B band into the green region of the spectrum. 2′,7′-Dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA) assays demonstrate that there is intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species upon exposure to light.

Photodynamic antimicrobial activities of gallium and indium porphyrins as well as their quaternized derivatives have been investigated against S. aureus and E. coli biofilms, as well as on their planktonic (free floating) cells using a light emitting diode lamp at 415 nm. The studied photosensitizers show considerable ability to generate singlet oxygen and the quaternized molecules 2a and 3a are potential photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) agents with log10 colony forming units >9 for E. coli and S. aureus planktonic cells. The quaternized derivatives are found to have higher ability to significantly suppress the biofilms of both S. aureus and E. coli in vitro. Therefore, this demonstrates that they are potentially suitable photosensitive agents for PACT use. The TD-B3LYP/LanL2DZ calculations were performed to evaluate the singlet excitation energies of quaternized and non-quaternized porphyrins in vacuo. Our study shows excellent agreement between time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) excited energies and experimental S1 > S0 excitation energies. The small deviation observed between the calculated and experimental spectra arises from the solvent effect. The excitation energies observed in these UV-visible spectra mostly originated from electron promotion between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) for the less intense band and the HOMO−1 for the most intense band of the ground states to the lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the excited states.

A novel tetraphenylethylene (TPE) architecture that makes use of a disilane bridge was developed to successfully prepare organic optical power limiting (OPL) materials with high transparency. The σ-bridged TPE derivatives exhibit enhanced solid-state emission efficacies up to 4 times that of TPE. Due to the unique σ-electron delocalization, the incorporated Si–Si bridge gives rise to intense nonlinear optics (NLO) properties. These compounds show favorable optical transparency in the visible region, since the σ–π interaction has a relatively minor effect on the absorption properties of TPE. The poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PBC) thin films of disilane-bridged compounds exhibit significant reverse saturable absorbance (RSA) responses during Z-scan measurements at 532 nm. In contrast, negligible OPL properties were observed in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution and when a PBC thin film was prepared with TPE. The disilane-bridged molecular system represents a novel and easily prepared architecture for the construction of solid-state optical limiting materials.

The optical limiting properties of three meso-pentafluorophenylstyrylBODIPY dyes are investigated in the presence and absence of methyl groups at the 1,7-positions that hinder free rotation of the meso-aryl group. Pentafluorophenyl groups are introduced at the meso-position, while 4-diethylaminostyryl groups are introduced at the 3- and/or 5-positions to form dyes with strong donor-[Formula: see text]-acceptor (D-[Formula: see text]-A) properties to enhance the dipole moment of the molecule. Favorable optical limiting properties are obtained for all three dyes, with the highest second-order hyperpolarizability value obtained for a monostyryl dye with no methyl groups at the 1,7-position. Bromination at the 2,6-positions of a 1,7-methyl substituted dye is found to result in second-order hyperpolarizability that is an order of magnitude lower than that calculated for the analogous non-halogenated dye.

Two novel Sn(iv) tetraisopropylphenylporphyrins have been synthesized to explore the effect of octabromination at the β-pyrrole positions on their photophysical properties and photodynamic activity. The lower energy Q band of an octabrominated complex lies at 675 nm well within the therapeutic window. The octabrominated dye has a relatively high singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.78 in DMF and exhibits favorable photodynamic activity against MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 10.7 μM and a 5.74 log reduction value (5 μM) towards S. aureus under illumination at 660 nm for 60 min with a Thorlabs M660L3 LED (280 mW cm-2).

The utility of Sn(iv) N-confused porphyrin (SnNCP) for use as photosensitizer dyes in photodynamic therapy is investigated. SnNCP has an unusually high singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.72 in DMSO. IC50 values of 1.6 and 12.8 μM were obtained against MCF-7 cells upon irradiation with 660 and 780 nm LEDs.

In this work, the successful synthesis of spherical (sCuONPs) and rod-like (CuONRs) copper oxide nanoparticles was reported. Several microscopic and spectroscopic techniques were used to confirm the different morphologies (spherical and rod-like) and also different diameter sizes. Copper metal within nanomaterials had different oxidation states (Cu0, Cu+, and Cu2+) as was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles were investigated, and their reactive oxygen radical species (ROS) generation was confirmed using UV–vis spectroscopy. Copper oxide nanoparticles catalytically converted H2O2 to form ROS (HO●−, HOO●−, or O2●−). ROS generation was confirmed using UV–vis spectroscopy and 1,3-diphenylbenzofuran (DPBF, as a radical quencher) and also using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMP) as a spin trap. UV–vis spectroscopy was further used to monitor a blue color development when copper oxide nanoparticles were mixed with 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The color changes were confirmed by UV–vis spectra with absorption maxima at 370 nm and 652 nm and naked eye for blue color development. Oxidase enzymes produce hydrogen peroxide as by-product and this property was used for the detection of biological analytes. Glucose and glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme were used as model bioanalytical system. Copper oxide nanorods were successfully synthesized and characterized their surface properties using various techniques. The nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic properties towards converting hydrogen peroxide to reactive oxygen radical species (ROS). The catalytic properties were confirmed using UV–vis (DPBF, radical scavenger) and EPR spectroscopy (TEMP, spin trap). The radicals could oxidize TMB to blue products visible to the naked eye as further proof of ROS generation.

In this work, we explore the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation abilities of cationic morpholino-substituted-phthalocyanine (Pc) conjugated to nitrogen (NGQDs) and nitrogen-sulfur (NSGQDs) doped-graphene quantum dots upon irradiation with light for photodynamic therapy (PDT), ultrasound for sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and the combination of both in photo-sonodynamic therapy (PSDT). The in vitro cytotoxicity studies were conducted using the Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 cells). For PDT treatments, only the 1O2 was detected for all the sensitizers, whereas both the 1O2 and •OH radicals were evident after SDT and PSDT treatments. An increase in the 1O2 generation was observed for the conjugates compared to the GQDs and the Pc alone. However, the •OH radicals were reduced in the conjugates compared to the GQDs and the Pc alone. The NGQDs generally showed better ROS generation efficacy compared to the NSGQDs, alone and in the conjugates. The combination therapy also shows improved efficacy compared to the monotherapies for the Pcs and Pc-GQDs conjugates.

Three different phthalocyanine complexes substituted with carbazoles were conjugated to graphene quantum dots (GQDs) through π–π stacking. The morphologies, sizes, and crystallinities of the nanoconjugates were determined using Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the metallophthalocyanines alone and when conjugated to the GQD nanomaterial in different solvents, as well as after having been embedded in thin films, were studied. The effects of the different substituents and solvents on the NLO properties of the metallophthalocyanines were evaluated. Enhancements in the photophysical properties of the complexes upon conjugation with the nanomaterial were observed. Fluorescence quantum yields, fluorescence lifetimes, triplet quantum yields, and triplet lifetimes were measured for the complexes, and for their conjugates in DMSO.

The results of recent studies on the optical limiting properties of BODIPY dyes at 532 and 1064 nm are described and compared. The optical limiting properties of novel 1,7-dimethyl-3,5-di-4-dihydroxyborylstyryl- and 3,5,7-tristyryl-1-methyl-BODIPY dyes were studied in CH2Cl2 and C6H6 and polystyrene thin films using the open aperture Z-scan technique at 532 nm with nanosecond laser pulses to provide an example of how the effective nonlinear absorption coefficient, the third order susceptibility, hyperpolarizability and limiting thresholds can be calculated.

Two morpholine-substituted Zn(II) phthalocyanines, complex 4 and the cationic 5, were synthesized and conjugated to graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and biotinylated GQDs (GQDs-biotin) by non-covalent π-π interactions. The GQDs-biotin are prepared as potential nanoparticle-based Pc delivery vector combined with a receptor-mediated transport system using biotin. The photo-physicochemical properties of the Pc complexes and their corresponding conjugates were studied. Upon conjugation, the fluorescence quantum yields decrease for 4 and 5, however, the triplet quantum yields were increased for the conjugates. All samples demonstrated singlet oxygen generation. For conjugated complexes, the singlet quantum yields decreased due to the screening effect in some cases. An increase in the photodynamic therapy activities upon quaternization was observed for the conjugates, with the cell viability decreasing from 66.2% to 51.2% after treatment for 4-GQDs and 5-GQDs, respectively. A relatively better performance was also observed for the cationic complex in combination with the biotin functionalized GQDs, 5-GQDs-biotin, where the cell viability was 34.9% after treatment. Moreover, the cellular uptake of 5-GQDs-biotin over 24 h was relatively higher compared to Pc complex alone and other Pcs-GQDs conjugates.

This work describes the conjugation of Co, Mn and Fe tetra ethynyl benzyl phthalocyanines to CdTe/ZnS quantum dots via click chemistry. The synthesized conjugates were then immobilised on glassy carbon electrode and their electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide oxidation and oxygen reduction investigated. CoPc(1)-QDs showed superior electrocatalytic behaviour towards hydrogen peroxide catalysis with sensitivity of 2.8 × 105 μA/mM and limit of detection of 0.023 μM. On the other hand, FePc(3)-QDs showed the best oxygen reduction activity involving a direct 4-electron mechanism.

Several differently substituted Zn(II) phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) were prepared and conjugated to GQDs. The photophysical properties were determined for both the Pcs and their respective conjugates including the fluorescence/triplet quantum yields and lifetimes as well as the singlet oxygen generating abilities. Upon conjugation to GQDs, the fluorescence of the Pcs decreased (insignificant decrease in some cases), with an increase in the triplet quantum yields. However, the singlet quantum yields of the Pcs in the conjugates did not show an increase with the increase in the triplet quantum yields, this is suspected to be due to the screening effect. The cytotoxicity of the complexes in vitro decreased upon conjugation, as a result of the reduced actual number of Pcs units provided in the conjugate for therapy. Upon introduction of cationic charges, the photodynamic therapy activity of the complexes increased.

Following the establishment of graphene quantum dots as potential phthalocyanine supports in photoactive membrane preparation for phthalocyanines lacking linkage functional groups, the practical efficiency of π-π stacking versus covalent linkage was investigated. Synthesized materials were characterized using FT-IR, Raman, powder X-ray diffraction, and UV–Vis spectroscopies and also by transmission electron and scanning electron microscopies. Phthalocyanine loadings onto graphene quantum dots of 0.40 mg/mg and 0.14 mg/mg (Pc mass/conjugate mass) for the π-π stacked and covalent linked conjugates respectively were observed. Covalent linkage to graphene quantum dots proved to be functionally superior to π-π linkage, where singlet oxygen quantum yield value of the phthalocyanine in the membrane for the covalent linked conjugate was approximately twice that of the π-π stacked membrane.

Herein, a cobalt(II) tetraphenyltetraphenanthroporphyrin (Co(II)TPTPP) with phenanthrene-fused pyrrole rings was synthesized and characterized. Moreover, a detailed analysis of its optical and redox properties was carried out by comparing the results obtained via optical spectroscopy and electrochemistry with the trends predicted via a series of DFT and TD-DFT calculations. The electrochemistry results demonstrated that the π-expanded Co(II)TPTPP interacted strongly with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which were finally immobilized on carbon nanotubes via noncovalent interactions and further deposited on glassy carbon. This strong immobilization via π–π stacking between Co(II)TPTPP and MWCNTs leads to significantly stable electrochemically catalyzed hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which provides a new insight into the understanding electron transfer channels.

A functional hybrid of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and cobalt pyrene-derivatized phthalocyanine (CoPc) used as a sensitive nanoprobe for the recognition of cyanide ion (CN−) is described in this work. The fluorescence of GQDs was quenched upon non-covalent (π-π stacking) hybrid formation with CoPc via a possible energy transfer pathway. However, in the presence of CN−, the interaction between GQDs and CoPc was perturbed, such that the fluorescence of GQDs initially quenched by CoPc was found to be efficiently recovered in the presence of CN−. Amongst the molecules and anions tested to ascertain their effects on the fluorescence behaviour of the hybrid, only CN− ion induced the tunable “off-on” restoration of the fluorescence of GQDs, which demonstrates the selectivity of the hybrid towards CN−. The restored fluorescence signals of the GQDs were linearly modulated by different concentrations of CN− and were used for the quantitative assay of CN− with high sensitivity coupled with rapid detection time. The detection was in the linear range of 1.0–50.0 nM with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.5 nM. The analysis of spiked samples for the recovery of CN− further demonstrated the applicability of the hybrid for the satisfactory detection of the target analyte.

The synthesis and characterization of a novel dibrominated 1,3,5-tristyrylBODIPY dye is reported, and its potential utility as a singlet oxygen photosensitizer and optical limiting material is assessed. The main spectral band lies in the therapeutic window, and there is a moderately high singlet oxygen quantum yield making the dye potentially suitable for use in biomedical applications and as an optical limiting dye at 532 nm. The optical limiting parameters are comparable to those reported previously for 3,5-distyrylBODIPYs, which suggests that mixtures of 3,5-distyryl and 1,3,5-tristyryl compounds that are formed in Knoevenagel condensation reactions could be used for this application. Theoretical calculations are used to assess the effect of 1,3,5-tristyryl substitution. A smaller red shift of the main spectral band is observed upon styrylation at the 1-position than is the case with the 3,5-positions due to there being smaller MO coefficients at this position, limiting the utility of this structural modification method for shifting the main BODIPY spectral band further into the therapeutic window.

The optical limiting (OL) properties of 3,5-di-p-benzyloxystyrylBODIPY dyes that contain both protons and bromine atoms at the 2,6-positions have been investigated by using the Z-scan technique at 532 nm on the nanosecond timescale. There is relatively weak absorbance at 532 nm under ambient light conditions, because the incorporation of p-benzyloxystyryl groups at the 3,5-positions results in a ca. 140 nm red shift of the main BODIPY spectral band to the 640–670 nm range. Reverse saturable absorbance (RSA) profiles that are consistent with an excited state absorption (ESA) mechanism involving the T1 and/or S1 states are observed in CH2Cl2 solution. Second order hyperpolarizability values of ca. 8 × 10−30 esu are obtained and this demonstrates that the dyes are potentially suitable for use in OL applications at 532 nm. There is a slight enhancement of the OL properties upon bromination, due to increased intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold, but the enhancement of the OL properties is less significant than has been observed with metal phthalocyanine complexes.

Novel meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin tetramethyl ester metal derivatives were synthesised and characterized. These derivatives were interacted with graphene quantum dots (GDQs). Spectroscopic evidence that was obtained showed that the resultant conjugates were stable due to the strong π–π stacking interaction between the GQDs and the porphyrins. The fluorescence and singlet oxygen generating behaviour of the porphyrins and the nanoconjugates were investigated following incorporation. The dark toxicity and photodynamic therapy activities of the porphyrins and the nanoconjugates were successfully studied using MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Cell viability for the dark toxicity was more than 90% for all complexes. The PDT activities at the highest concentration of 120 μg ml−1 showed a decrease in cell viability down to 15.2% for the GaClTMPP–GQDs.

Two Sn(IV) triarylcorroles were synthesised and characterized. The absorption spectrum of a meso-thien-2-yl substituted tin(IV)corrole (1-Sn) is red shifted compared to its phenyl analogue (2-Sn) and shows no sign of aggregation in solution. 1-Sn and 2-Sn exhibited singlet oxygen quantum yields of 0.87 and 0.54 in DMF, and have a triplet lifetime of 31 and 50 μs, respectively. Time dependent cellular uptake in MCF-7 cells for 1-Sn reached a peak at 24 h, and 1-Sn was found to be more lipophilic than 2-Sn. 1-Sn showed good photo-cytotoxicity on exposure to a Thorlabs 625 nm LED with an IC50 value of 3.2 μM and remained inactive in the dark.

Three fused-ring-expanded rubyrins with modified macrocyclic core have been synthesized and characterized. A series of spectroscopic, electrochemical measurements and a set of theoretical calculations demonstrate that the core-modification of the inner core of rubyrins has a large influence on the electronic structure. Colorimetric changes are observe that demonstrate that these core-modified rubyrins could be used as selective Hg2+ ion sensors. These properties can be fine-tuned by introducing lipophilic substituents on the meso-aryl rings.

The synthesis of 4-bis(4-aminophenoxy)phenoxy derivatized phthalocyanine containing In (complex 2), and Ga (complex 3), and the previously reported complex 4 (containing Zn) and their covalent attachment to glutathione (GSH) functionalized cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) are reported in this work. Additionally, their photophysical, energy transfer and nonlinear optical properties were investigated. The covalently linked derivatives showed lower fluorescence quantum yields with corresponding higher triplet quantum yields. Quenching of the photoluminescence intensity of the CdTe QDs was observed to be due to energy transfer from the QDs to phthalocyanine (Pcs) molecules. The reverse saturable absorption nonlinear optical response was found to be predominantly dependent on the excited state absorption. The observed limiting threshold ranges from 0.04 to 0.62 J/cm−2.

A new readily-synthesized Sn(IV) tetraarylchlorin with thien-2-yl substituents (SnC) has been prepared and fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and its photophysical and photochemical properties, such as the singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ), fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF), triplet lifetime (τT) and photostability, have been evaluated. SnC has an unusually high ΦΔ value of 0.89 in DMF. Studies on the photodynamic activity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells exhibited a very low IC50 value of 0.9 μM and high phototoxicity (dark versus light) indices of >27.8 after irradiation with a 660 nm Thorlabs LED (280 mW cm−2). The results demonstrate that Sn(IV) tetraarylchlorins of this type are suitable candidates for further in-depth PDT studies.

A manganese tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin (MnTAPP) was synthesized and conjugated to graphene quantum dots (GQDs) through stacking and covalent linkage to give MnTAPP GQDs and MnTAPP@GQDs. The electrochemical behavior was tested by Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry towards hydrazine. Both methods of conjugation improved the activity of the electrocatalysis compared to individual components. MnTAPP@GQDs showed better catalytic activity of 4.36 × 10 2 Ms -1 and lowest LoD of 0.00237 µM followed by MnTAPP GQDs.

Tris[(4-(pyridin-4-ylthio)-2-thio-4-methylthiazol-5-yl)acetic acid phthalocyaninato] zinc (II) (3) was covalently linked to and doped onto SiNPs. An increase in triplet quantum yields for 3-SiNPs (linked) with decreasing lifetimes was observed. For 3-SiNPs (doped) there was a decrease in both the triplet quantum yield and lifetimes when compared to 3 alone. There was an increase in singlet oxygen quantum yields for 3-SiNPs (linked) compared to 3 from 0.67 to 0.80, while there was a decrease for 3-SiNPs (doped) to 0.25.

The synthesis of zinc-zinc, gallium-gallium and indium-indium ball-type phthalocyanines (complexes 4, 5 and 6) and the surface assembly of the complexes onto metallic gold and silver nanoparticles are reported in this work. Furthermore, their photophysical and nonlinear optical dynamics were investigated. Decreases in the fluorescence quantum yields with a corresponding increase in the triplet quantum yields of the nanoconjugates in comparison to complexes 4, 5 and 6 alone were observed. The mechanism of strong reverse saturable absorption observed was found to be predominantly dependent on excited state absorption. The optical limiting thresholds range from 0.09 to 0.19 J/cm2. Enhanced triplet parameters and nonlinear optical responses were found when the complexes were conjugated to metallic nanoparticles.

We report on the electrochemical behaviour of reduced graphene quantum dots (rGQDs) compared to amino functionalized graphene quantum dots (NH2GQDs). Reduction of the GQDs entails the elimination of the excessive carboxyl and hydrogen groups on the GQDs surface, thereby reducing the energy band gap. The energy band gap of graphene is directly proportional to the available oxygen atoms. The two GQD types were conjugated to a novel cobalt phthalocyanine (cobalt tris-(tert-butyl phenoxy)-mono-carboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine, CoPc) via covalent and nom-covalent interactions. The resulting conjugates were tested towards the electrooxidation of hydrazine. The conjugates are represented as rGQDs(π)CoPc, NH2(π)CoPc, rGQDs@CoPc and NH2GQDs@CoPc. The resulting conjugates were adsorbed onto a glassy carbon electrode using the drop and dry method. The lowest limit of detection (LOD) was obtained for rGQDs(π)CoPc.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of 3,5-di-[Formula: see text]-benzyloxystyrylBODIPY dyes with different substituents at the meso-aryl position is reported. The photophysical and nonlinear optical properties are described. BODIPYs of this type are found to be suitable for optical limiting at 532 nm on the nanosecond timescale. An enhancement of the population of the T[Formula: see text] state through the incorporation of bromine atoms at the 2,6-positions does not result in an enhancement of the optical limiting properties on a nanosecond timescale. This suggests that, in contrast with phthalocyanines, access to excited state absorption (ESA) from the T[Formula: see text] state through the introduction of a heavy atom effect does not provide a significantly improved reverse saturable absorbance response compared to ESA from the S[Formula: see text] state.

We report on the synthesis of glutathione capped gold (AuNPs–GSH) and gold–silver (Au3Ag1NPs–GSH) nanoparticles and their covalent attachment to Zn monocarboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (1) via amide bond formation. The photophysicochemical properties and photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity of the complex and its nanoconjugates were assessed. The conjugates afforded improved triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yield as well as PDT activity (except for 1-Au3Ag1NPs which afforded decreased activity) in comparison to complex 1.

ClGa 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis (4-bromophenyl) porphyrinato (ClGaTBrPP) and its metal free derivative were successfully synthesized and incorporated into Pluronic F127 polymeric micelles that has been conjugated to folic acid (FA) to form ClGaTBrPP-F127-FA (or H 2 TBrPP-F127-FA). For comparison, ClGaTBrPP-F127 and H 2 TBrPP-F127 (without FA) were also formed. The singlet oxygen quantum yield for ClGaTBrPP-F127-FA was higher (Φ Δ = 0.44) than that of H 2 TBrPP-F127-FA (Φ Δ = 0.37), due to the heavy atom effect of Ga in the former which encourages intersystem crossing to the triplet state. The same applies to ClGaTBrPP-F127 (Φ Δ = 0.47) and H 2 TBrPP-F127 (Φ Δ = 0.41). Thus, Φ Δ values decreased in the presence of FA, but still high enough for practical application of the nanodrug system. The binding constants K b were determined to be 1.08 × 10 4 M −1 , 2.51 × 10 5 M −1 , 1.52 × 10 3 and 2.68 × 10 3 for H 2 TBrPP+F127-FA, ClGaTBrPP+F127-FA, ClGaTBrPP-F127 and H 2 TBrPP-F127, respectively. The K p values were determined in biphasic octanol and water system.

The nonlinear optical behaviors of ball-type phthalocyanine complexes: 1′,11,’15′,25′-tetrakis-[4,4′-((4-formyl-1,2-bisphenoxyl))bis(phthalocyaninato zinc (II)] (5), 1′,11,’15′,25′-tetrakis-[4,4′-((4-formyl-1,2-bisphenoxyl) bis(phthalocyaninato gallium (III) chloride)] (6), and 1′, 11,’15′,25′-tetrakis-4,4′-((4-formyl-1,2-phenoxyl)bis(phthalocyaninato indium (III) chloride)] (7) and the corresponding monomeric derivatives 8–10 were investigated using nanosecond pulse open aperture Z-scan technique at 532 nm. The nonlinear response showed strong reverse saturable absorption for all the complexes both in solution and when embedded in polymer matrix. The dimeric complexes showed better optical limiting properties compared to the monomeric derivatives. The βeff values for the dimeric complexes 5–7 were found to be 48.5, 55.2, and 60.1 cm/GW for 5, 6A, and 7 respectively, higher than the corresponding monomeric derivatives 8–10. Enhanced optical limiting properties were observed when the complexes were formulated in thin films. The second order hyperpolarizability values were in order of 10−28–10−26 esu in solution and 10−27–10−26 in films.

This work reports on the synthesis and characterisation of novel supramolecular hybrids containing BODIPY-decorated graphene quantum dots (BODIPY@GQDs) and zinc phthalocyanine. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were functionalized with L-glutathione (GSH) in order to assist coupling to the BODIPY dye. {2,9(10)16(17)23(24)-Tetrakis-[3-(diethylamino)phenoxy]phthalocyaninato}zinc(II) (1) was immobilized via π–π stacking interaction on the BODIPY-decorated GQDs and pristine GQDs to form the supramolecular hybrids 1-BODIPY@GQDs and 1-GQDs, respectively. The photophysical and photochemical properties of these conjugates were investigated. Energy transfer occurred from the (i) GQDs to BODIPY, (ii) GQDs to 1, and (iii) BODIPY@GQDs to 1via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The highest FRET efficiency was observed for the BODIPY@GQDs (0.93). The introduction of the BODIPY core to the GQD structure resulted in higher triplet, and singlet oxygen quantum yields for the resultant Pc/GQD hybrid (1-BODIPY@GQDs). The zeta potential values obtained imply a high colloidal stability for the supramolecular hybrids. The results suggest that such hybrids may be applied in fields such as photodynamic therapy (PDT), where a high singlet oxygen quantum yield is desired.

The synthesis of ball-type zinc and gallium phthalocyanines (complexes 2 and 3) and their covalent linkage to glutathione (GSH) and amine functionalized quantum dots (QDs) are reported in this work. Furthermore, their photophysical, photo-induced resonance energy transfer and optical limiting responses were investigated. We observed a decrease in the fluorescence quantum yields with a corresponding increase in the triplet quantum yields of the nanoconjugates in comparison to the phthalocyanine complexes alone. The reverse saturable absorption was found to be dependent on the excited state absorption, and the observed limiting threshold ranged from 0.32 to 1.43 J cm−2. Enhanced triplet parameters and nonlinear optical performance were found when the complexes were covalently linked to semiconductor quantum dots compared to carbon based graphene quantum dots.

Pyrene-derivatized H2, GaCl, and Zn porphyrins were immobilized on graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to form (GQDs-H2TPrP, GQDs-GaClTPrP, and GQDs-ZnTPrP) conjugates through the π-π stacking interaction method followed by encapsulating into Pluronic F127 micelles to form (GQDs-H2TPrP + F127, GQDs-GaClTPrP + F127, and GQDs-ZnTPrP + F127). Spectroscopic evidence shows that the resultant conjugates were stable due to the strong π-π stacking interaction between the GQDs and the porphyrins. The fluorescence and singlet oxygen generating behaviour of the porphyrins were investigated following incorporation. GQDs-GaClTPrP + F127 showed highest values of the binding constant (Kb). The Stern-Volmer constant (Ksv) for GQDs-ZnTPrP + F127 were the highest compared to other porphyrins derivatives.

A manganese tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin (MnTAPP) was synthesized and attached to graphene quantum dots (GQDs) via covalent and π - π interaction to give MnTAPP@GQDs and MnTAPP--GQDs, respectively. There was an increase (using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy) in size of the GQDs in the presence of the porphyrin due to aggregation. The porphyrins in the absence and presence of GQDs were then adsorbed onto a glassy carbon electrode using drop and dry method. The electrochemical behavior was tested by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry towards hydrazine. Both methods of combining MnTAPP with GQDs improved the activity of the electrocatalysis compared to individual components. MnTAPP@GQDs showed better catalytic rate constant of 4.36 × 102 Ms−1 and lowest LoD of 0.0023 mM followed by MnTAPP--GQDs. Furthermore, the sensor showed good selectivity in the presence of interfering analytes. All probes showed good stability.

Herein we report on the photophysicochemical properties of neutral, positively and negatively charged metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) when doped onto silica nanoparticles. The MPcs are: unsubstituted ZnPc (complex 1, neutral), Zn tetraaminophenoxy phthalocyanine (ZnTAPhPc, complex 2, neutral), tetrakis[4-(iodo-N-methylpyridinium)thio] phthalocyanine (ZnTMPyPc, complex 3, cationic), and Zn tetra sulfophenoxy phthalocyanine (ZnTSPhPc, complex 4, anionic). Following doping onto SiNPs, the triplet quantum yields increased for neutral complex 1 and positively charged complex 3. However, singlet oxygen quantum yields increased for positively charged 3 (in 3-SiNPs) and the negatively charge 4 (in 4-SiNPs) and not for complex 1 (in 1-SiNPs), compared to Pcs alone, due to the screening effect.

The synthesis and characterization of a crown-ether-substituted 3,5-distyrylBODIPY dye with a 4-dimethylaminophenyl group at the meso-position is reported. The optical limiting properties were investigated at 532 nm, and the dye was found to have enhanced reverse saturable absorption responses during z-scan measurements. Theoretical calculations suggest that this may be due to the large dipole moment that is introduced by the benzo-fused crown ether and 4-dimethylaminophenyl substituents.

The syntheses of zinc(II) tetra–[3–(4–phenoxy) (propanoic acid) phthalocyanine] ( 2 ) and zinc(II) mono–[3–(4–phenoxy) (propanoic acid) phthalocyanine ( 3 ) are reported in this work. Compounds 2 and 3 were covalently linked to glutathione capped silver (AgNPs–GSH), gold (AuNPs–GSH) and silver-gold alloy (Ag 3 Au 1 NPs–GSH) nanoparticles (NPs) via an amide bond formation to afford the conjugates: 2 –AgNPs–GSH, 3 –AgNPs–GSH, 2 –AuNPs–GSH, 3 –AuNPs–GSH, 2 -Ag 3 Au 1 NPs–GSH and 3 -Ag 3 Au 1 NPs–GSH. The photophysicochemical behaviours of the compounds and their conjugates with NPs were assessed in solution. The conjugates afforded a decrease in fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes with improved triplet quantum yields in comparison to the compounds. Accordingly, the AgNPs and AuNPs conjugates with the compounds afforded high singlet quantum yields. On the contrary, the conjugates of the alloy afforded decreased singlet quantum yields probably due to the screening effect. The compounds and their conjugates with NPs could serve as a viable and efficacious photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy.

The feasibility of using π–π stacking as a means of fixing unsubstituted Zn phthalocyanine (ZnPc) to a support prior to formation of photoactive polymer asymmetric membranes was explored. Stable ZnPc–graphene quantum dot-polystyrene conjugates (6.15 μmol/g ZnPc loading) were synthesized and embedded in polystyrene membranes which proved to be photoactive with a singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.43 in ethanol and 0.37 in water. The membranes also proved to be active in the photocatalytic oxidation of 4-chlorophenol in water where the reaction followed second-order kinetics. At 3.24 × 10−4 mol L−1, the photo-oxidation of 4-chlorophenol was observed with a kobs of 35.9 L mol−1 min−1 and a half-life of 86 min.

5,10,15,20-Tetra(4-nitrophenyl) porphyrinato gallium chloride (ClGaTNPP) and 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-sulfophenyl) porphyrinato gallium chloride (ClGaTSPP) and their metal free derivatives were successfully synthesised and were added to Pluronic F127 polymeric micelles to form ClGaTNPP-F127 (or H2TNPP-F127) and ClGaTSPP-F127 (or H2TSPP-F127), respectively. The fluorescence and singlet oxygen generating behaviour of the porphyrins were investigated following incorporation. The fluorescence lifetimes were short-lived upon incorporation into the polymer, compared to the porphyrin alone; suggesting the quenching of the lifetimes of the porphyrin by the polymers. Singlet oxygen quantum yields were determined to be 0.55 and 0.59 for ClGaTSPP and ClGaTSPP-F127, respectively. Thus there is an increase in singlet oxygen quantum yields in the presence of Pluronic F127 compared to the porphyrin alone. ClGaTSPP-F127 (or H2TSPP-F127) showed higher values of the binding constant (Kb) as well as high values of the Stern-Volmer constant (Ksv) compared to ClGaTNPP-F127 (or H2TNPP-F127).

The synthesis and characterization of series of P(V) and Ga(III) A3 triarylcorrole complexes with 4-methylthiophenyl (2a, 3a), thien-3-yl (2b, 3b) and thien-2-yl (2c, 3c) meso-groups are reported along with the physicochemical and photodynamic activity properties of the dyes and their gold nanoparticle (AuNP) conjugates. The Ga(III) corrole series have lower fluorescence quantum yields and higher singlet oxygen quantum yields than the analogous P(V) complexes. Upon conjugation to AuNPs, the fluorescence quantum yields of the P(V) and Ga(III) corroles decrease, while the singlet oxygen quantum yields increase due to an external heavy atom effect. The P(V) and Ga(III) corroles exhibit relatively low in vitro dark cytotoxicity, which was further enhanced upon conjugation to AuNPs. The P(V) complexes and their AuNP conjugates display more favorable PDT activity properties upon illumination with a Thorlabs 625 nm light-emitting diode (288 J cm−2) with phototoxicity indices > 18.5 and 20.8, respectively, for the meso-thienyl-substituted 2b-AuNP and 2c-AuNP conjugates. Optical spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that this can be attributed to there being significantly less aggregation due to the presence of two trans-hydroxy axial ligands.

Tracking the biothiol cysteine (Cys) in living systems is a significant responsibility to balance the redox environment and oxidative stress. A quinoline-7-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazole (Q-NBD) fluorophore has been synthesized and characterized towards examination of Cys. The probe forms a quinoline-substituted phenol (Q-Ph-OH) after thiolysis of the NBD ether bond, leading to an increase of fluorescence at green channel. The turn-on sensing mechanism originates from the change in intramolecular charge transfer (ICT-OFF) along with an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) as suggested by spectroscopy measurements in solutions, time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and 1H NMR titration examination. Importantly, Q-NBD exhibited great sensitivity with a low limit of detection value of 89.5 nM and remarkable selectivity in various biothiols towards Cys. The sensor probe was successfully used for detecting both endogenous and exogenous Cys in PC3 living cells and spiked Cys in human urine samples.

Herein, we present syntheses of three asymmetrical zinc(II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) complexes and hydrothermal synthesis of cobalt tungstate nanoparticles. The ZnPc derivatives were covalently linked to cobalt tungstate nanoparticles. Photophysical and photochemical behaviour of Pcs and nanoconjugates were investigated. The nanoconjugates generated higher triplet quantum yield and singlet oxygen quantum yield than the ZnPcs alone. Furthermore, in this paper photocatalytic efficiencies of ZnPc complexes and nanoconjugates were investigated for the degradation of methylene blue and higher photocatalytic behaviour was observed for the conjugates. The kinetic model was used to study photocatalytic behaviour of all the prepared photocatalysts.

Antimicrobial resistance is a most important problem facing the treatment of infectious diseases. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy is an alternative treatment strategy, considered to be cost-effective and feasible. For this purpose, octa-imine substituted ZnPc (3) have been prepared and conjugated to nitrogen, sulfur co-doped graphene quantum dots (N,S-GQDs) through π-π stacking. The photophysical and photochemical properties of Pc alone and and Pc-conjugated to the GQD nanomaterial such as absorption, fluorescence, fluorescence life time, singlet oxygen quantum yields, triplet state quantum yields and exited state lifetimes were investigated in solutions before in vitro cell studies. The PACT activity of prepared structures was investigated against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus). Our results suggest that the in the case of conjugation of zinc Pc to N,S-GQDs, photodynamic inactivation increased with the 100 % reduction percentage

Herein, we report on the successful fabrication of a visible light-responsive TiO2 - graphene oxide nanosheets – Zn phthalocyanine (TiO2@GONS@ZnPc) ternary structure for the photoelectrochemical degradation of Orange G azo dye. The characterization of TiO2@GONS@ZnPc composite was achieved using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Our results show that the TiO2@GONS@ZnPc surface hybrid heterojunction promotes charge separation and electron migration, significantly improving the degradation efficiency with an applied potential. For the first time, we show the existence of a non-radical activation route for persulfate (PS) using such π electron-rich ZnPc-GONS catalysts. The degradation kinetics were found to follow pseudo first order kinetics. Electron spin resonance analyses suggested that neither hydroxyl radicals nor sulfate radicals were produced therein, and therefore were not responsible for the persulfate-driven oxidation of the OG dye. These findings suggest that both which GONS and ZnPc play a critical role in mediating the eventual charge transfer mediated PS activation. The results illustrate the remarkable capacity of the TiO2@GONS@ZnPc composite to rapidly degrade Orange G by a coupled TiO2@GONS@ZnPc-persulfate system.
