Continuous nitrate treatment is an innovative, nature-based and cost-effective restoration method that has been implemented in a small, hypereutrophic lake by redirecting the nitrate-rich waters of the lake's natural tributaries into its hypolimnion. The aim of this treatment is to increase the redox potential at the sediment-water interface in order to provide conditions for efficient phosphorus binding. To assess the effects of this treatment, studies of the physico-chemical and biological parameters of the lake waters were carried out before its application (PreNT - years 2005-2007), during its application (FullNT - 2008-July 2019), and in the period when installation was partly clogged (LimNT- August 2019-2021). The results show effective improvement of oxygenation of the hypolimnion during the treatment followed by a decrease of phosphorus concentration - a proxy of the reduced internal loading. Water quality gradually improved during the treatment. The periods of cyanobacterial blooms shortened in some years, and ceased in other years, and it was also manifested by the increase in the range of Secchi depth and a decrease in chlorophyll-a concentration. The share of eukaryotic algae in the phytoplankton increased. The method showed high resistance to disturbances in its functioning, because during two years of operation of one pipeline, only a slight deterioration of water quality was observed. This enables effective repair of the hypolimnion's supply of nitrates, without a sudden return to the pre-restoration state. The eutrophication of water, such as excessive nitrogen and phosphorus, are closely associated with the outbreak of red tide. However, the response of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) to red tide remained unclear in water. In this study, three species of diatoms capable of causing red tides were cultured in simulated seawater with different concentrations of DIP. The changes of biomass, chlorophyll a concentration and the carbon stable isotope composition of microalgae, the DIP concentration and pH of the culture medium were compared among the experimental groups. In addition, correlation verification was used to test the correlation between the change of DIP concentration and other indicators. The results showed that in the experimental period, the DIP concentration of each experimental group decreased significantly first, and the concentration dropped to less than 40% of the initial level. After that, the pH of the medium, the biomass, chlorophyll a concentration and carbon stable isotope composition of the microalgae showed varying degrees of increase, and then stabilized or decreased. These also marked the outbreak of red tide. Moreover, the correlation test showed that there was a correlation between them and the change of DIP concentration. The permanent problem of formation of algal blooms in water polluted with nitrogen and phosphorus is one of the formidable environmental problems. Biochar has the potential to solve the issues related to eutrophication due to its special structure and ability to absorb the nutrients. Biochar's exceptional nutrient absorption capacity allows it to absorb excess nutrients, causing the algae to use fewer nutrients. This review deals with effective performance of biochar in reducing the effects caused by algal blooms and improving the environmental conditions. Besides, an analysis of the issues involved addresses the origins and consequences of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, and the formation of algal blooms is also reviewed. It then delves deeply into biochar, explaining its properties, production methods, and their uses in environmental contexts. The review emphasizes that biochar can be effective in dealing with many challenges associated with environments affected by algal blooms, specifically focusing on the positive effects of biochar and algae to examine their roles in controlling algae growth. Finally, the review emphasizes new achievements and innovative ideas to foster sustainable aquatic ecosystems. Seawater physicochemical parameters and environmental capacity are important ecological indicators and typical features of the marine environment. It has great significance in the marine material cycle and ecological health. In September 2021 (wet season) and March 2022 (dry season), two voyage investigations were conducted at 12 stations (D1-D12) on Dapeng Bay (DPB), northern South China Sea. The distribution of nutrient, water-quality status, environmental capacity, and impact of ecological environment were discussed. Results showed that NH 4 -N was the main form of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) during the wet season, with concentrations ranging from 0.008 mg/L to 0.109 mg/L, accounting for ~53 % of DIN. Conversely, NO 3 -N was the main form of DIN during the dry season, with concentrations ranging from 0.005 mg/L to 0.117 mg/L, accounting for ~50 % of DIN. The DIP concentration ranged from 0.002 mg/L to 0.019 mg/L, accounting for ~51 % and 31 % of the total dissolved phosphorus in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. The distributions of NH 4 -N, NO 3 -N, NO 2 -N, and DIP were relatively similar, decreasing from the inner bay to the outer bay. The eutrophication indices of 12 stations <1, indicating a poor eutrophication state. Single-factor indices including chemical oxygen demand (COD), DIN, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) were less than the class I seawater-quality standard. However, except for station D1, the overall water quality was good. Dissolved oxygen with DIP had a significantly negative correlation during the dry season, indicating that DIP was primarily dominated by marine biological activity and organic-matter decomposition. The remaining environmental capacities of COD, DIN, and DIP in DPB were calculated to be 13,742, 1418, and 141 tons, respectively. Based on the functional-zone division of the sea area, the remaining environmental capacities of COD, DIN, and DIP were exceeded 75 % of the total environmental capacity. The complex hydrological conditions caused by the backwater effect at the confluence inevitably modify the geochemical processes of elements. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the precise transformation mechanisms of nutrients in large river systems. This study aimed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics and their impact on phosphorus transfer in the lower Han River, which is influenced by backwater from the Yangtze River (the largest river in China). By establishing a hydrodynamic-water quality model, we have determined that the discharge ratio (the ratio of flow between the Han River discharge and the Yangtze River discharge) can be utilized as a representative indicator of the backwater effect from the Yangtze River on the Han River. Three distinct patterns were identified in this study: mixing, backwater, and intrusion. The corresponding discharge ratio values were categorized as >0.08, 0.01∼0.08, and <0.01 respectively. Additionally, the extent of the backwater zone was determined, revealing that the length of the backwater zone increased from 50 km (XG) to 100 km (FS) as the discharge ratio decreased from 0.08 to 0.01. Furthermore, it was observed that the water level at the confluence rose from 2.52 m to 6.83 m in accordance with these changes in discharge ratio values. The migration pattern of phosphorus primarily involved the settling and retention of particulate phosphorus, particularly the labile particulate organic phosphorus (LOP) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP). When the confluent patterns became the intrusion pattern, the backwater zone expanded to 150 m (XT), causing a 10.40 m increase in water level at the confluence. An intrusion zone formed, and its phosphorus concentrations were same as Yangtze River's. Above the intrusion area, a backwater region formed and its concentrations of LOP and DOP decreased, while the concentration of PO 4 increased due to the release from resuspended particles. This release was induced by higher velocity of bottom water brought about by the water exchange of two rivers. The discharge ratio of 0.01-0.08 resulted in the sedimentation of LOP and DOP, causing the lower Han River to act as a "sink" for phosphorus, potentially exacerbating phosphorus pollution. Higher discharge ratios in spring led to phosphorus release from sediment, increasing dissolved phosphorus concentrations and raising the risk of algal blooms in the lower Han River. Rivers worldwide are under stress from eutrophication and nitrate pollution, but the ecological consequences overlap with climate change, and the resulting interactions may be unexpected and still unexplored. The Po River basin (northern Italy) is one of the most agriculturally productive and densely populated areas in Europe. It remains unclear whether the climate change impacts on the thermal and hydrological regimes are already affecting nutrient dynamics and transport to coastal areas. The present work addresses the long-term trends (1992-2020) of nitrogen and phosphorus export by investigating both the annual magnitude and the seasonal patterns and their relationship with water temperature and discharge trajectories. Despite the constant diffuse and point sources in the basin, a marked decrease (-20%) in nitrogen export, mostly as nitrate, was recorded in the last decade compared to the 1990s, while no significant downward trend was observed for phosphorus. The water temperature of the Po River has warmed, with the most pronounced signals in summer (+0.13°C/year) and autumn (+0.16°C/year), together with the strongest increase in the number of warm days (+70%-80%). An extended seasonal window of warm temperatures and the persistence of low flow periods are likely to create favorable conditions for permanent nitrate removal via denitrification, resulting in a lower delivery of reactive nitrogen to the sea. Global surface waters are in a bad ecological and chemical state, which has detrimental effects on entire ecosystems. To prevent further deterioration of ecosystems and ecosystem services, it is vital to minimize environmental pollution and come up with ways to keep surface water healthy and clean. Recently, photogranules have emerged as a promising platform for wastewater treatment to remove organic matter and nutrients with reduced or eliminated mechanical aeration, while also facilitating CO 2 capture and production of various bioproducts. Photogranules are microbial aggregates of microalgae, cyanobacteria, and other non-phototrophic organisms that form dense spheroidic granules. Photogranules settle fast and can be easily retained in the treatment system, which allows increased amounts of water and wastewater to be treated. So far, photogranules have only been tested on various "high-strength" wastewaters but they might be an excellent choice for treatment of large volumes of polluted surface water as well. Here, we propose and tested for the first time photogranules on their effectiveness to remove nutrients from polluted surface water at unprecedented low concentrations (3.2 mg/L of nitrogen and 0.12 mg/L of phosphorous) and low hydraulic retention time (HRT = 1.5 h). Photogranules can successfully remove nitrogen (<0.6 mg/L, ∼80 % removal) and phosphorous (<0.01 mg/L, 90-95 % removal) to low levels in sequencing batch operation even without the need for pH control. Subjecting photogranules to surface water treatment conditions drastically changed their morphology. While, under "high-strength" conditions the photogranules were spherical, dense and defined, under polluted surface water conditions photogranules increased their surface area by forming fingers. However, this did not compromise their excellent settling properties. We set out to study the seasonal variations in porewater phosphorus and lanthanum concentrations in the dated sediment cores from a small eutrophic lake that has been treated with Phoslock, a lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) amendment. Three sites were sampled when the hypolimnion was either oxygenated or anoxic: (i) the lake's deepest point, (ii) a littoral site receiving inflows from the catchment, and (iii) a littoral site influenced by nearby septic tanks. Phosphate (PO 4 3- -P), lanthanum (La), iron (Fe), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and sulfate (SO 4 2- ) were measured in porewater samples. An inverse diagenetic model was used to quantify fluxes of dissolved elements across the sediment-water interface as well as the net rate of their reactions along the porewater concentration gradients. Results show that porewater P and Fe underwent strong seasonal dynamics, while La did not. P fluxes, 20-fold higher at the deepest site than elsewhere in the basin, were influenced by anoxic conditions in the hypolimnion during summer and winter, suggesting that P mobility remained sensitive to redox fluctuations despite the addition of La. At the deepest site, fluxes of P across the sediment-water interface increased from 1 to 9 × 10 -9 μmol cm -2 s -1 between spring and summer, while the rate of P production to the porewater also increased a hundredfold. These increases were concurrent with Fe mobilization. Finally, sediment dating shows that the fraction of P sequestered by La is buried under freshly deposited sediment at a rate of 2-3 mm per year. These results indicate that external P fluxes and erosion control remain crucial to maintain the longevity of the LMB treatment.

The study of the fractions and distribution characteristics of organic phosphorus in the sediment of the water level fluctuating zone of Nansi Lake is conducive to revealing the transformation of phosphorus in the lake, and has important scientific significance for controlling the eutrophication of Nansi Lake. Based on the sediment of the water level fluctuation zone of Nansi Lake. The improved Hedley continuous grading extraction, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscope were used to characterize the structural characteristics and stability of organic molecules in the sediment, and to reflect the differences in the structure and stability of organophosphate in the water level fluctuating zone. Principal component analysis (PCA), Redundancy analysis (RDA) and correlation heat map analysis were used to analyze the correlation between phosphorus and physicochemical index. The results showed that the alternation between wet-dry conditions was more favorable for the release of phosphorus from sediment, compared to continuous inundation conditions. Moreover, the higher the frequency of wet-dry alternations, the greater the release of phosphorus in different forms from the sediment. Wet-dry alternation resulted in a reduction of substituent on the aromatic rings of sediment DOM (dissolved organic matter), and the continuous drying would increase the molecular weight and humidification degree of DOM in the sediment. Correlation analysis showed that NaOH-P o content in sediment was significantly negatively correlated with TP, IP, OP and various organophosphorus forms, indicating a close transformation relationship between phosphorus forms in sediment. Predicting the parameters that influence colloidal phosphorus (CP) release from soils under different land uses is critical for managing the impact on water quality. Traditional modeling approaches, such as linear regression, may fail to represent the intricate relationships that exist between soil qualities and environmental influences. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the major determinants of CP release from different land use/types such as farmland, desert, forest soils, and rivers. The study utilizes the structural equation model (SEM), multiple linear regression (MLR), and three machine learning (ML) models (Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)) to predict the release of CP from different soils by using soil iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), pH, total organic carbon (TOC) and precipitation as independent variables. Results show that colloidal-cations (Fe, Al, Ca) and colloidal-TOC strongly influence CP release, while bioclimatic variables (precipitation) and pH have weaker effects. XGBoost outperforms the other models with an R 2 of 0.94 and RMSE of 0.09. SHapley Additive Explanations described the outcomes since XGBoost is accurate. The relative relevance ranking indicated that colloidal TOC had the highest ranking in predicting CP. This was supported by the analysis of partial dependence plots, which showed that an increase in colloidal TOC increased soil CP release. Diatoms are key components of freshwater ecosystems and are regularly used for paleolimnological reconstructions, in which defining species optima and tolerances is fundamental for interpreting assemblage shifts in a sediment record. Here, we examined responses of diatoms across three major environmental gradients-dissolved inorganic carbon (range: 0.1-230.5 mg · L -1 ), total phosphorus (range: 3-326 μg · L -1 ), and maximum lake depth (range: 0.9-55.0 m)-taken from 158 lakes from across Canada. The lakes were sampled as part of the LakePulse Network, which conducted a standardized sampling of lakes spanning 12 Canadian ecozones. Hierarchical logistic regression was used to model the species responses of 37 common taxa, and species optima and tolerances were calculated with weighted average modeling. The most common response detected was the symmetrical unimodal model, suggesting we likely captured the full environmental ranges for many species, although skewed unimodal responses were also common. Indicator species analyses identified taxa with high predictive values and fidelities to particular ecozones, with high-nutrient-adapted taxa such as Stephanodiscus spp. and Cyclotella meneghiniana characteristic of the agriculturally productive Prairie region. The Prairies stood out in the dataset as the region with the most unique flora from the local contribution to beta diversity analysis. Overall, the autecological data provided by our study will allow for improved interpretations of paleolimnological records and other biomonitoring efforts, addressing management concerns and contributing to a better understanding of our changing environment., (© 2024 The Author(s). Many urban water bodies grapple with low flow flux and weak hydrodynamics. To address these issues, projects have been implemented to form integrated urban water bodies via interconnecting artificial lake or ponds with rivers, but causing pollution accumulation downstream and eutrophication. Despite it is crucial to assess eutrophication, research on this topic in urban interconnected water bodies is limited, particularly regarding variability and feasible strategies for remediation. This study focused on the Loucun river in Shenzhen, comprising an pond, river and artificial lake, evaluating water quality changes pre-(post-)ecological remediation and establishing a new method for evaluating the water quality index (WQI). The underwater forest project, involving basement improvement, vegetation restoration, and aquatic augmentation, in the artificial lake significantly reduced total nitrogen (by 43.58%), total phosphorus (by 79.17%) and algae density (by 36.90%) compared to pre-remediation, effectively controlling algal bloom. Rainfall, acting as a variable factor, exacerbated downstream nutrient accumulation, increasing total phosphorus by 4.56 times and ammonia nitrogen by 1.30 times compared to the dry season, and leading to algal blooms in the non-restoration pond. The improved WQI method effectively assesses water quality status. The interconnected water body exhibits obvious nutrient accumulation in downstream regions. A combined strategy that reducing nutrient and augmenting flux was verified to alleviate accumulation of nutrients downstream. Despite continuous efforts, eutrophication is still occurring in freshwater and phosphorus (P) is the most important nutrients that drive the eutrophication in rivers and streams. However, little information is available about the distribution of P fractions in river sediment. Here, the sequential extraction approach was used to evaluate the sediment P fractionation and its content in the anthropogenically damaged river Ganga, India. Different sedimentary P fractions viz. exchangeable (Ex-P), aluminum bound (Al-P), iron bound (Fe-P), calcium bound (Ca-P), and organically bound phosphorus (Org-P), were quantified. Significantly higher level of total P was recorded in pre-monsoon season (438.5 ± 95.8 mg/kg), than other [winter (345.7 ± 110.6 mg/kg), post-monsoon (319.2 ± 136.3 mg/kg), and monsoon (288.6 ± 77.3 mg/kg)] seasons. Different P fractions such as Ex-P, Al-P, Fe-P, Ca-P and Org-P varied from 2.88-12.8 mg/kg, 7.64-98.8 mg/kg, 32.2-179.2 mg/kg, 51.97-286.1 mg/kg and 9.3-143.7 mg/kg, respectively, which correspondingly represented 0.5-10.54%, 3.41-20.18%, 17.27-37.82%, 37.35-60.2%, 4.15-25.88% of the Total P with a rank order of P-fractions was Ca-P > Fe-P > Org-P > Al-P > Ex-P. Bio-available P contributes a considerable portion (37.9-46.0%) of total P which may increase the eutrophication to overlying water. Results demonstrate that inorganic P species control the P bio-availability in both time and space. Human activities have caused an imbalance in the input nitrogen and phosphorus (N/P) in the biosphere. The imbalance of N/P is one of the characteristics of water eutrophication, which is the fundamental factor responsible for the blooms. The effects of the N/P imbalance on diatom and phycospheric bacteria in blooms are poorly understood. In this study, the N/P molar ratio in real water (14:1) and the predicted N/P molar ratio in future water (65:1) were simulated to analyze the response of Cyclotella sp. and phycospheric bacteria to the N/P imbalance. The results showed that the N/P imbalance inhibited the growth of Cyclotella sp., but prolonged diatom bloom duration. The resistance of Cyclotella sp. to the N/P imbalance is related to phycospheric bacteria, and there are dynamic regulatory mechanisms within the phycospheric bacteria community to resist the N/P imbalance: (1) the increase of HNA bacterial density, the decrease of LNA bacterial density, (2) the increase of phycospheric bacterial diversity and eutrophic bacteria abundance, and the change of denitrifying bacteria abundance, (3) the activity of nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism of HNA bacteria enhanced, while that of LNA bacteria decreased. And the gene hosts of nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism were most enriched in Proteobacteria, indicating that Proteobacteria played an important role in maintaining the stability of phycospheric bacteria and was the dominant phylum resistant to the N/P imbalance. The phosphorus (P) concentration is increasing in parts of the Baltic Sea following the spring bloom. The fate of this excess P-pool is an open question, and here we investigate the role of microbial degradation processes in the excess P assimilation phase. During a 17-day-long mesocosm experiment in the southwest Finnish archipelago, we examined nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon acquiring extracellular enzyme activities in three size fractions (<0.2, 0.2-3, and >3 µm), bacterial abundance, production, community composition, and its predicted metabolic functions. The mesocosms received carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) amendments individually and in combination (NC) to distinguish between heterotrophic and autotrophic processes. Alkaline phosphatase activity occurred mainly in the dissolved form and likely contributed to the excess phosphate conditions together with grazing. At the beginning of the experiment, peptidolytic and glycolytic enzymes were mostly produced by free-living bacteria. However, by the end of the experiment, the NC-treatment induced a shift in peptidolytic and glycolytic activities and degradation of phosphomonoesters toward the particle-associated fraction, likely as a consequence of higher substrate availability. This would potentially promote retention of nutrients in the surface as opposed to sedimentation, but direct sedimentation measurements are needed to verify this hypothesis., (The Author(s) 2024. There is a longstanding debate about the role of nitrogen (N) vs phosphorus (P) in limiting primary production in lakes and whether co-nutrient limitation should be considered for managing eutrophication. We evaluated nutrient limitation and eutrophication at a subcontinental scale. Using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency National Lakes Assessment data, we assessed broad-scale patterns in nutrient limitation and compared samples of all surveyed lakes and lakes resurveyed in multiple surveys. We found that N correlated more strongly with productivity in the western U.S., while P correlated more strongly in the eastern U.S. The aggregated subcontinental effect suggests the importance of factors like N-deposition, terrestrial vegetation, underlying geology, and land use for understanding drivers of nutrient dynamics in lakes. Our study showed how patterns can aggregate across subcontinental scales yet still demonstrate considerable variation when more deeply examined on an individual lake level. Overall, we found that nutrient limitation is dynamic over space and time, with most lakes being co-limited. The prevalence of co-limitation also increased from 2007 to 2017. Trophic states within each limitation category varied substantially. Our findings underscore the need for combined N and P reductions to mitigate accelerated eutrophication.

Data from the International Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) Database were used to compare the phosphorus (P) control performance of six categories of stormwater BMPs representing traditional systems (stormwater pond, wetland basin, and detention basin) and low-impact development (LID) systems (bioretention cell, grass swale, and grass strip). Machine learning (ML) models were trained to predict the reduction or enrichment factors of surface runoff concentrations and loadings of total P (TP) and soluble reactive P (SRP) for the different categories of BMP systems. Relative to traditional BMPs, LIDs generally enriched TP and SRP concentrations in stormwater surface outflow and yielded poorer P runoff load control. The SRP concentration reduction and enrichment factors of LIDs also tended to be more sensitive to variations in climate and watershed characteristics. That is, LIDs were more likely to enrich surface runoff SRP concentrations in drier climates, when inflow SRP concentrations were low, and for watersheds exhibiting high impervious land cover. Overall, our results imply that stormwater BMPs do not universally attenuate urban P export and that preferentially implementing LIDs over traditional BMPs may increase TP and SRP export to receiving freshwater bodies, hence magnifying eutrophication risks.

Excessive anthropogenic phosphorus (P) emissions put constant pressure on aquatic ecosystems. This pressure can be quantified as the freshwater eutrophication potential (FEP) by linking P emissions, P fate in environmental compartments, and the potentially disappeared fraction of species due to increase of P concentrations in freshwater. However, previous fate modeling on global and regional scales is mainly based on the eight-direction algorithm without distinguishing pollution sources. The algorithm fails to characterize the fate paths of point-source emissions via subsurface pipelines and wastewater treatment infrastructure, and exhibits suboptimal performance in accounting for multidirectional paths caused by river bifurcations, especially in flat terrains. Here we aim to improve the fate modeling by incorporating various fate paths and addressing multidirectional scenarios. We also update the P estimates by complementing potential untreated point-source emissions (PSu). The improved method is examined in a rapidly urbanizing area in Taihu Lake Basin, China in 2017 at a spatial resolution of 100 m × 100 m. Results show that the contribution of PSu on FEP (62.6%) is greater than that on P emissions (58.5%). The FEP is more spatially widely distributed with the improved fate modeling, facilitating targeted regulatory strategies tailored to local conditions.

This research was designed to estimate the contributions of phosphorus (P) in different factions from an upstream plain river network to algal growth in a downstream shallow eutrophic lake, Taihu Lake, in China. During three flow regimes, the P fractions in multiple phases (particulate, colloidal and dissolved phases) and their algal availabilities were assessed via bioassays with Dolichospermum flos-aquae as the test organism. The P partitioning patterns among multiple phases were strongly affected by the concentration of total suspended solids (TSS) that changed with the river flow regime, with stronger disturbance of sediments at lower water levels (low flow) and weaker disturbance of sediments at higher water levels (high flow) in the plain river network. The median TSS concentration across the river network decreased from 157.4 mg/L during low flow to 31.8 mg/L during high flow, and the median particulate P concentration decreased from 0.132 mg/L to 0.093 mg/L. The particulate P contributed equally to the amount of algal available P (AAP) as did the water-mobilizable P (colloidal plus dissolved phase) in the rivers flowing into Taihu Lake. The annual average concentrations of particulate algal available P (P-AAP), colloidal algal available P (C-AAP) and dissolved algal available P (D-AAP) were estimated to be 0.032 mg/L, 0.012 mg/L and 0.019 mg/L, respectively, during 2012-2018, accounting for 50.8 %, 19.0 % and 30.2 %, respectively, of the total AAP. At the watershed scale, controlling P drainage from downstream urbanized areas should be emphasized. To improve water quality and reduce instream erosion, floodplain remediation along agricultural streams can provide multiple ecosystem services through biogeochemical and fluvial processes. During floodplain inundation, longer water residence time and periodic anoxic conditions can lead to increased nitrogen (N) removal through denitrification but also mobilization of phosphorus (P), impeding overall water quality improvements. To investigate the capacity for N and P processing in remediated streams, we measured potential denitrification and nitrous oxide production and yields together with potential P desorption and P fractions in floodplain and stream sediments in ten catchments in Sweden. Sediment P desorption was measured as equilibrium P concentration, using P isotherm incubations. Denitrification rates were measured with the acetylene inhibition method. Sediment nutrient process rates were combined with hydrochemical monitoring along remediated streams and their paired upstream control reaches of trapezoidal shape to determine the impact of floodplains on water quality. The correlation between floodplain denitrification rates and P desorption (r = 0.53, p = 0.02) revealed a trade-off between soluble reactive P (SRP) and nitrate removal, driven by stream water connectivity to floodplains. Nitrous oxide production was not affected by differences in P processing, but nitrous oxide yields decreased with higher denitrification and P desorption. The release of SRP from floodplains (0.03 ± 0.41 mg P kg - 1 day - 1) was significantly lower than from trapezoidal stream banks (0.38 ± 0.37 mg P kg - 1 day - 1), predicted by long-term SRP concentrations in stream water and floodplain inundation frequency. The overall impact of SRP release from floodplains on stream SRP concentrations in remediated reaches was limited. However, the remediated reaches showing increased stream SRP concentrations were also frequently inundated and had higher labile P content and coarse soil texture in floodplain sediments. Excessive phosphorus discharge causes water eutrophication and disturbs the homeostasis of aquatic ecosystems. Capacitive deionization (CDI) has been proven to be a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technology for removing phosphorus. Raw carbon (Raw C) electrodes are widely used in CDI. However, the phosphorus removal capacity of most unmodified Raw C still needs to be enhanced. Therefore, the Fe, N-co-doped carbon prepared in this study was expected to further improve the phosphorus removal performance. Herein, the optimal electrode with 5% Fe (FeNC) had an approximately 2.7 times higher adsorption capacity than Raw C. At a low concentration (5 mg P/L), FeNC exhibited a high maximum removal capacity of 4.28 mg P/g. Under reversed voltage, the phosphorus was easily desorbed by deionized water. Ion competition studies showed that coexisting ions adversely affected phosphorus adsorption onto FeNC in the order SO 4 2-  > NO 3 - water under 1.2 V. More importantly, phosphorus removal by FeNC during CDI was demonstrated in simulated natural water from the Jinjiang River (Chengdu, China). This study indicated that FeNC is expected to be a potential electrode for CDI dephosphorization.- . Furthermore, the energy consumption of FeNC was calculated to be as low as 0.0069 kWh/g P and 0.023 kWh/m 3 water under 1.2 V. More importantly, phosphorus removal by FeNC during CDI was demonstrated in simulated natural water from the Jinjiang River (Chengdu, China). Excessive phosphorus (P) in eutrophic water induces cyanobacterial blooms that aggravate the burden of in-situ remediation measures. In order to ensure better ecological recovery, Flock & Lock technique has been developed to simultaneously sink cyanobacteria and immobilize P but requires a combination of flocculent and P inactivation agent. Here we synthesized a novel lanthanum-modified pyroaurite (LMP), as an alternative for Flock & Lock of cyanobacteria and phosphorus at the background of rich humic acid and suspended solids. LMP shows a P adsorption capacity of 36.0 mg/g and nearly 100 % removal of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), turbidity, UV 254 and P at a dosage (0.3 g/L) much lower than the commercial analogue (0.5 g/L). The resultant sediment (98.2 % as immobile P) exhibits sound stability without observable release of P or re-growth of cyanobacteria over a 50-day incubation period. The use of LMP also constrains the release of toxic microcystins to 1.4 μg/L from the sunk cyanobacterial cells, outperforming the commonly used polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Similar Flock & Lock efficiency could also be achieved in real eutrophic water. The outstanding Flock & Lock performance of LMP is attributable to the designed La modification. During LMP treatment, La acts as not only a P binder by formation of LaPO 4 , but also a coagulant to create a synergistic effect with pyroaurite. The controlled hydrolysis of surface La(III) over pyroaurite aided the possible formation of La(III)-pyroaurite networking structure, which significantly enhanced the Flock & Lock process through adsorption, charge neutralization, sweep flocculation and entrapment. In the end, the preliminary economic analysis is performed. Lake restoration usually focuses on reducing external nutrient sources. However, when sediments contain nutrients accumulated over multiple years, internal nutrient release can delay restoration progress. In lake restoration and management, it is important to understand the dynamic relationship between nutrient concentrations in a lake and internal and external nutrient sources. In this study, we quantified external nutrient inputs through measurements and compared them with internal sediment release from simulation using the PCLake+ model. Additionally, we evaluated alterations in the internal nutrient release, lake nutrient concentrations, and algae biomass (chlorophyll-a) within the lake following varying degrees of reduction in external nutrient loads. The results demonstrate that the PCLake+ effectively simulated the lake's nutrient concentration and algae biomass. Based on the PCLake+ estimates, internal nutrient loads accounted for 51 % of the total nitrogen (N) and 80 % of the total phosphorus (P) loadings in Lake Erhai in 2019. In 2020, the total contributions were 43 % for TN and 72 % for TP. We simulated four scenarios where external nutrient inputs were reduced to 25 %, 50 %, 75 %, and 99.99 % of their original levels. The 40-year simulation showed that the lake's ecological system initially exhibited a fast internal response but reached equilibrium after eight years. P concentrations took longer to reach equilibrium compared to N concentrations, probably due to the stronger binding characteristics of P. To meet the water quality target in the future, it is necessary to reduce external N and P inputs into Lake Erhai by at least 23 % and 15 %, respectively, under current conditions. Although reducing external nutrient loads can indirectly lower internal nutrient loads, water management should address both external and internal loads simultaneously, as internal release cannot be effectively reduced by external reductions alone. Groundwater inflow can be a significant source of nutrients for riverine ecosystems, which can affect eutrophication i.e., the elevated primary production and the corresponding accumulation of algal biomass. Experimental and modelling work has shown that benthic algae (autotrophic biofilms) in particular benefit, as they have direct access to the inflowing groundwater-borne nutrients. Primarily the supply of phosphorus (P) enhances pelagic algal biomass, as it is the limiting nutrient for primary production in most freshwater systems. In this study, we estimate the effect of groundwater inflow on overall eutrophication of a large, European lowland river and tested its seasonal effect on biofilms in particular. We calculated the effects on overall eutrophication during summer according to the estimated input of groundwater-borne P and the C:P stoichiometry of planktonic algae in the Elbe River. Our model indicated that these diffuse P inputs have the potential to significantly increase eutrophication. Groundwater-P can contribute up to 1.5 t/d PO4 over the investigated 450 km stretch of the Elbe River under low flow conditions. This would result in an additional planktonic load of about 46 t/d of particulate organic carbon, thereby contributing to eutrophication at the regional scale in this river. In contrast, at the local scale, biofilms were collected seasonally from artificial substrata exposed in the river either in hydrogeologically active areas with groundwater inflow, or in areas of varying hydraulic connectivity. Analyses of biofilm macronutrients, structural components and biofilm community composition show distinct effects of season, hydrogeology and groundwater inflow. The dominant predictors were season and the interaction between hydrogeology and groundwater. Benthic eutrophication is most likely to occur in autumn in areas of loose rock with high groundwater inflow. Phytoplankton growth in freshwater is often limited by the availability of phosphorus (P), and thorough understandings of P availability are essential to prevent algal blooms. However, the differences in bioavailability and utilization mechanisms of different P forms remain unclear, especially whether organophosphorus could be used as P sources. This study investigated the effects of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/L P on Microcystis aeruginosa, including dissolved organic P (DOP) (1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid) and dissolved inorganic P (DIP) (dipotassium phosphate). Compared with DIP, intracellular P content absorbed in DOP treatment was significantly lower. DOP was more conducive to the synthesis of soluble protein and the release of extracellular polymeric substances. Alkaline phosphatase activity was generally enhanced in response to DIP deficiency. Both DIP and DOP promoted carbon uptake to the same extent. DOP groups absorbed carbon to synthesize energy and proteins in response to stress, while DIP groups were mainly used carbon for growth. They all reduced the content of microcystin releasing into the aquatic environment and therefore reduced ecological risk caused by microcystin. Compared with DIP, the expressions of photosynthesis-related genes were significantly down-regulated in DOP group, while the expressions of nucleoside phosphate catabolism, P transporter, and amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism were significantly up-regulated in response to P deficiency environment and the stress of 1.0 mg/L DOP concentration. In summary, the bioavailability of different P forms on cyanobacteria is different, so it is not sufficient to only use total P for assessing environmental risk. The world's largest "green tide" (Ulva prolifera) has occurred every year since 2007 in the Yellow Sea. The Subei Shoal area is thought to be the origin of the green tide. Based on field data from 2016 to 2023, seasonal and interannual variations of dissolved nutrients and their ecological effects in the Subei Shoal were analyzed. Spatial distribution of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved silicate (DSi) showed clear terrestrial sources, while ammonia (NH 4 -N) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) were not solely controlled by terrestrial sources. The seasonal variations of NH 4 -N, DIN, DON, DIP and DSi concentrations were significant, and the interannual variations of DIN, DON, DIP and DSi concentrations showed general decreasing trends from 2016 to 2023. The key factors affecting the seasonal and interannual variations of DIN and DIP concentrations were terrestrial input, aquaculture wastewater discharge, atmospheric deposition, submarine groundwater discharge and macroalgae absorption, while the dominant factor determining the variations of DSi concentrations was terrestrial input. NH 4 -N and DON concentrations were mainly influenced by aquaculture wastewater discharge and the absorption and release of macroalgae. Phosphorus (P) release from sediment poses a severe challenge for eutrophication management in the aquatic environment. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in riverine ecosystems have shown an increasing trend due to intensified climate change and anthropogenic activities, while their impact on sediment P cycling remains unclear. To investigate the effects of different DOC loads on sediment P release and the underlying mechanisms, we conducted a two-month experiment in 15 plexiglass tanks, with five gradient-increasing target DOC concentrations set according to reality: control (S 0 ), 5 mg/L (S 5 ), 10 mg/L (S 10 ), 15 mg/L (S 15 ), and 20 mg/L (S 20 ). The results demonstrated that: i) DOC enrichment promoted the sediment P mobilization and release, with the underlying mechanisms exhibited periodic characteristics. ii) reduced dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and stimulated alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) were likely the primary and sustained facilitating mechanisms. While after the termination of DOC load, elevated pH level was also considered a contributing factor when chlorophyll a (Chl a) ranged between 5.9 μg/L and 7.7 μg/L iii) ultimate concentration of total P (TP) in the overlying water depended on DOC load. After DOC addition was terminated, decreased TP concentrations were observed when DOC concentration was in the range of 5-15 mg/L, which may be attributed to the direct uptake of P by phytoplankton counteracting the minor promotion of P release induced by anoxic conditions. However, when DOC concentrations exceeded 15-20 mg/L, there were notable increments in TP concentrations. Our findings provide further insight into the response mechanisms of sediment P release to the increasing organic C load in natural ecosystems. Water eutrophication caused by nitrogen pollution is an urgent global issue that requires attention. The Qingyi River is a typical micro-polluted river in China. In this study, we took this river as the research object to investigate the nitrogen pollution purification capacity of a herbaceous plant, Rumex japonicus Houtt. (RJH). Compared to nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 - -N), RJH showed better purification performance on total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia nitrogen (NH 2 - -N), RJH showed better purification performance on total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), with a highest removal rate of 37.22%, 52.13%, and 100%, respectively. RJH could completely remove ammonia nitrogen and exhibit excellent resistance to pollutant interference when the initial concentration of ammonia nitrogen in the cultivation devices increased from 1 mg/L to 10 mg/L or in the actual river. This indicated the great application potential of RJH in ammonia nitrogen removal from natural micro-polluted rivers. In addition, combined effects of nitrification of roots, absorption of self-growth, stripping, and others contributed to nitrogen removal by RJH. Particularly, the nitrification of roots played a dominant role, accounting for 73.85% ± 8.79%. High-throughput sequencing results indicate that nitrifying bacteria accounted for over 75% of all bacterial species in RJH. Furthermore, RJH showed good growth status and strong adaptability. The correlation coefficients of its relative growth rate with chlorophyll A and the degradation rate of absorption were 0.9677 and 0.9594, respectively. Our research demonstrates that RJH is one of the excellent varieties for ammonia removal. According to stoichiometric homeostasis theory, eutrophication is expected to increase the dominance of submerged macrophytes with low homeostatic regulation coefficients (H) relative to those with high H values, ultimately reducing macrophyte community stability. However, empirical evidence supporting this hypothesis is limited. In this study, we conducted a three-year tracking survey (seven sampling events) at 81 locations across three regions of Erhai Lake. We assessed the H values of submerged macrophyte species, revealing significant H values for phosphorus (P) and strong associations of H P values (range: 1.58-2.94) with species and community stability. Moreover, in plots simultaneously containing the dominant high-H P species, Potamogeton maackianus, and its low-H P counterpart, Ceratophyllum demersum, we explored the relationships among eutrophication, interspecific interaction shifts, and community dynamics. As the environmental P concentration increased, the dominance of P. maackianus decreased, while that of C. demersum increased. This shift coincided with reductions in community H P and stability. The presence of non-reactive phosphorus (NRP) in environmental waters presents a potential risk of eutrophication and poses challenges for the removal of all phosphorus (P) fractions. This study presents the first investigation on the removal performance and mechanism of three model NRP compounds, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) and 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC), in the sediment microbial fuel cell-floating treatment wetland (SMFC-FTW). Coupling SMFC with plants proved to be effective at removing NRP via electrochemical oxidation and plant uptake, particularly the challenging-to-degrade phosphonates that contain C-P bonds. Compared with the control group, the removal efficiencies of the model NRP in SMFC were observed to increase by 11.9%-20.8%. SMFC promoted the conversion of NRP to soluble reactive phosphorus (sRP) and the transfer of P to sediment. Furthermore, the electrochemical process enhanced both plant growth and P uptake, and increased P assimilation by 72.6%. The presence of plants in the bioelectrochemical system influenced the occurrence and fate of P by efficiently assimilating sRP and supporting microbial transformation of NRP. Consequently, plants enhanced the removal efficiencies of all P fractions in the overlying water. In this study, we investigated the hydrological and ecological impacts of heavy rainfall caused by the storm Rumbia and Typhoon Lekima on Laizhou Bay (LZB) through land‒sea synchronous field surveys, online remote sensors, and simulated enclosure experiments. Within two weeks of Rumbia, approximately 9% and 16% of the annual riverine total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) fluxes, respectively, were transported to the LZB and the proportions were 17% and 35%, respectively, for Lekima. The land use on the watersheds increased the rates of land-derived nutrient loading and altered their biogeochemical forms. Consequently, the average concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (DIP) in the LZB increased by 2.6 and 1.0 times post-Rumbia and by 3.5 and 1.3 times post-Lekima, respectively. Relatively lower salinity and temperature, sudden increases in DIN, and strengthened coastal currents stimulated the growth of highly adaptable and small diatoms, resulting in the first diatom blooms. Lanthanum modified bentonite (LMB) is typical P-inactivating agent that has been applied in over 200 lakes. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and high pH restrict the phosphorus (P) immobilization performance of LMB. However, the P immobilization/release behaviors of LMB-amended sediment when suspended to overlying water with high pH and DOC have not yet been studied. In the present work, batch adsorption and long-term incubation experiments were performed to study the combined effects of pH and DOC on the P control by LMB. The results showed that the coexistence of low concentration of DOC or preloading with some DOC had a negligible effect on P binding by LMB. In the presence of DOC, the P adsorption was more pronounced at pH 7.5 and was measurably less at pH 9.5. Additionally, the pH value was the key factor that decided the P removal at low DOC concentration. The increase in pH and DOC could significantly promote the release of sediment P with a higher EPC 0 . Under such condition, a higher LMB dosage was needed to effectively control the P releasing from sediment. In sediment/water system with intermittent resuspension, the alkaline conditions greatly facilitated the release of sediment P and DOC, which increased from 0.087 to 0.581 mg/L, and from 11.05 to 26.56 mg/L, respectively. Under the dual effect of pH and DOC, the P-immobilization performance of LMB was weakened, and a tailor-made scheme became essential for determining the optimum dosage. The desorption experiments verified that the previously loaded phosphorus on LMB was hard to be released even under high pH and DOC conditions, with an accumulative desorption rate of less than 2%. Macrophyte overgrowth in eutrophic lakes can hasten the decline of shallow water bodies, yet the impact of macrophyte deposition on sediment phosphorus (P) accumulation in the ice-on season remains unclear. Comparative analyses of P variations among 13 semi-connected sub-lakes in Wuliangsu Lake in China, a typical MDE lake, considered external flow and macrophyte decomposition as driving forces. Sediment P fractions and water total phosphorus (TP) were analyzed at 35 sampling points across three ice-on season stages, along with macrophyte TP content to assess debris contributions. Our findings reveal that phosphorus accumulation occurs during the ice-on season in the MDE lake, with an average TP content increase of 16 mg/kg. However, we observed a surprisingly small sediment nutrient accumulation ratio (ΔTP/ΔTN=0.006) compared to macrophyte nutrient levels before decomposition. Further analysis of the dominant species, Potamogeton pectinatus, indicates that a significant portion (55%) of macrophyte phosphorus is released before the ice-on season. This highlights the critical importance of timing macrophyte harvesting to precede the phosphorus leaching process, which has implications for lake management and ecosystem restoration efforts. Additionally, our research demonstrates similar transformations among different sediment fractions as previously reported. Macrophyte debris decomposition likely serves as the primary source of Residual P (Res-P) or TP accumulation. In addition, Ca-bound P (Ca-P) generally showed a decrease, which mainly caused by its transformation to Fe/Al-bound P (Fe/Al-P), Exchange-P (Ex-P), and sometimes to Res-P. However, we emphasize the significant impacts of flow dynamics on Ca-P transport and transformations. Its hydrodynamic action increases water dissolved oxygen, which accelerates the transformation of Ca-P to more easily released Fe/Al-P and Ex-P. Furthermore, hydrodynamic transport also leads to upstream Ca-P transport to downstream. This study examined the anaerobic release of phosphorus (P) from two different Baltic Sea sediments (B and F), focusing on the impact of initial concentration of externally introduced waste-derived volatile fatty acids (VFA) as the carbon source, temperature, pH, and mixing conditions. The first batch bioreactor set was operated to demonstrate the effect of VFA on anaerobic P release at different concentrations (1000-10000 mg/L as COD) at 20 °C. A notable P release of up to 15.85 mg/L PO 4 -P was observed for Sediment B at an initial carbon concentration of 10000 mg COD/L. However, VFA consumption in the bioreactors was minimal or no subsequent. The second batch bioreactor set was carried out to investigate the effect of temperature (20 °C-35 °C), pH (5.5, 7.0 and 8.5) and mixing conditions on P release by introducing lower initial carbon concentration (1000 mg COD/L) considering the potential risk for VFA accumulation in the bioreactors. Maximum P releases of 4.4 mg/L and 3.5 mg/L were for Sediment B and Sediment F, respectively. Two-way ANOVA tests revealed that the operation time and pH and their interactions were statistically significant (p < 0.05) for both sediments while the effect of mixing was not statistically significant. Most of the sulfate was reduced during batch bioreactor operation and Desulfomicobiaceae became dominant among other sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) possibly shows the importance of SRB in terms of anaerobic P release. Primary production is an important driver of marine carbon storage. Besides the major nutrient elements nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon, primary production also depends on the availability of nutrient-type metals (e.g., Cu, Fe, Mo) and the absence of toxicologically relevant metals (e.g., Ni, Pb). Especially in coastal oceans, carbon storage and export to the open ocean is highly variable and influenced by anthropogenic eutrophication and pollution. To model future changes in coastal carbon storage processes, a solid baseline of nutrient and metal concentrations is crucial. The North Sea is an important shelf sea, influenced by riverine, atmospheric, Baltic Sea, and North Atlantic inputs. We measured the concentrations of dissolved nutrients (NH 4 + , NO 3 - , PO 4 3- , and SiO 4 4- ) and 26 metals in 337 water samples from various depths within the entire North Sea and Skagerrak. A principal component analysis enabled us to categorize the analytes into three groups according to their predominant behavior: tracers for seawater (e.g., Mo, U, V), recycling (e.g., NO 3 - , PO 4 3- , SiO 4 4- ), and riverine or anthropogenic input (e.g., Ni, Cu, Gd). The primary drivers of eutrophication in lakes following the reduction of external nutrient inputs are the release of N and P from sediments. Constructed wetlands play a pivotal role in ameliorating N, P, and other biogenic element levels. However, the presence of large vegetation in these wetlands also substantially contributes to nutrient accumulation in sediments, a phenomenon influenced by seasonal variations. In this study, a typical constructed wetland was selected as the research site. The research aimed to analyze the forms of N and P in sediments during both summer and winter. Simultaneously, a comprehensive pollution assessment and analysis were conducted within the study area. The findings indicate that elevated summer temperatures, together with the presence of wetland vegetation, promote the release of N through the nitrification process. Additionally, seasonal variations exert a significant impact on the distribution of P storage. Furthermore, the role of constructed wetlands in the absorption and release of N and P is primarily controlled by the influence of organic matter on nitrate-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen, and available phosphorus, and is also subject to seasonal fluctuations. In summary, under the comprehensive influence of constructed wetlands, vegetation types, and seasons, sediments within the lake generally exhibit a state of mild or moderate pollution. Therefore, targeted measures should be adopted to optimally adjust vegetation types, and human intervention is necessary, involving timely sediment harvesting during the summer to reduce N and P loads, and enhancing sediment adsorption and retention capacity for N and P during the winter., (© 2024 The Authors. Enhancement of shellfish populations has long been discussed as a potential nutrient reduction tool, and eastern oyster aquaculture was recently approved as a nutrient reduction best management practice (BMP) in Chesapeake Bay, USA. This study addressed BMP-identified data gaps involving variation in nutrient concentration related to ploidy, effects of reproductive development, and a paucity of phosphorus concentration data. Diploid and triploid oysters were collected from farms in Maryland and Virginia across the typical local reproductive cycle. The nutrient concentration of tissue and shell was consistent with the currently implemented BMP. Minor variation observed in nitrogen and phosphorus concentration was within the previously reported range, for farm location, ploidy, and reproductive cycle timing. Ploidy-based differences in tissue dry weight were not observed at either farm, which contrasts with current nutrient reduction estimates. Validating paleo total phosphorus (TP) inference methods over long time scales is essential for understanding historic changes in lake P supply and the processes leading up to the present-day global lake eutrophication crisis. Monitored lake water TP time series have enabled us to identify the drivers of eutrophication over recent decades. However, over longer time scales, the lack of reliable TP inference means our understanding of drivers is speculative. Validation of lake water TP reconstruction, therefore, remains the "ultimate aim" of eutrophication studies. Here, we present the first critical comparison of two fully independent paleo TP inference approaches: the well-established diatom method (DI-TP) and a recently developed sediment geochemical method (SI-TP). Using lake sediment records from a small eutrophic U.K. lake (Crose Mere), we find a statistically significant agreement between the two inferred TP records with greater than 60% shared variance. Both records show identical timings, with a 19th century acceleration in TP concentration and subsequent declines following a peak in 1930. This significant agreement establishes the validity of long-term paleo TP inference for the first time. With this, we can now test assumptions and paradigms that underpin understanding of catchment P sources and pathways over longer time scales.

Long-term phosphorus (P) fertilization results in P accumulation in agricultural soil and increases the risk of P leaching into water bodies. However, evaluating P leaching into groundwater is challenging, especially in clay soil with a high P sorption capacity. This study examined whether the combination of PO 4 oxygen isotope (δ 18 O PO4 ) analysis and the P saturation ratio (PSR) was useful to identify P enrichment mechanisms in groundwater. We investigated the groundwater and possible P sources in Kubi, western Japan, with intensive citrus cultivation. Shallow groundwater had oxic conditions with high PO 4 concentrations, and orchard soil P accumulation was high compared with forest soil. Although the soil had a high P sorption capacity, the PSR was above the threshold, indicating a high risk of P leaching from the surface orchard soil. The shallow groundwater δ 18 O PO4 values were higher than the expected isotopic equilibrium with pyrophosphatase. The high PSR and δ 18 O PO4 orchard soil values indicated that P leaching from orchard soil was the major P enrichment mechanism. The Bayesian mixing model estimated that 76.6% of the P supplied from the orchard soil was recycled by microorganisms. This demonstrates the utility of δ 18 O PO4 and the PSR to evaluate the P source and biological recycling in groundwater.

Nitrogen and phosphorus play essential roles in ecosystems and organisms. However, with the development of industry and agriculture in recent years, excessive N and P have flowed into water bodies, leading to eutrophication, algal proliferation, and red tides, which are harmful to aquatic organisms. Biochar has a high specific surface area, abundant functional groups, and porous structure, which can effectively adsorb nitrogen and phosphorus in water, thus reducing environmental pollution, achieving the reusability of elements. This article provides an overview of the preparation of biochar, modification methods of biochar, advancements in the adsorption of nitrogen and phosphorus by biochar, factors influencing the adsorption of nitrogen and phosphorus in water by biochar, as well as reusability and adsorption mechanisms. Furthermore, the difficulties encountered and future research directions regarding the adsorption of nitrogen and phosphorus by biochar were proposed, providing references for the future application of biochar in nitrogen and phosphorus adsorption.

Inefficient global nutrient (i.e., phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N)) management leads to an increase in nutrient delivery to freshwater and coastal ecosystems and induces eutrophication in these aquatic environments. This process threatens the various species inhabiting these ecosystems. In this study, we developed regionalized characterization factors (CFs) for freshwater eutrophication at 0.5 × 0.5-degree resolution, considering different fates for direct emissions to freshwater, diffuse emissions, and increased erosion due to agricultural land use. The CFs were provided for global and regional species loss of freshwater fish. CFs for global species loss were quantified by integrating global extinction probabilities. Results showed that the CFs for P and N impacts on freshwater fish are higher in densely populated regions that encompass either large lakes or the headwaters of large rivers. Focusing on nutrient-limited areas increases country-level CFs in 51.9 % of the countries for P and 49.5 % of the countries for N compared to not considering nutrient limitation. In-stream phosphorus (P) legacies cause lags between upstream remediation and downstream load reductions. However, the length of these lags is largely unknown, especially for long stream distances. As a result, lag time estimates at the large-watershed scale have been abstract and sometimes understated. Here, we leverage a large area watershed model with newly improved in-stream P simulation (SWAT+P.R&R) to evaluate the magnitude, longevity, and spatial cascade of legacy P remobilization in a U.S. corn belt watershed. Our results illustrate the "spiraling recovery" of P loads after a hypothetical point source remediation, where locations further downstream take longer to recover to baseline load levels. At the watershed outlet, in-stream legacy P contributions are equivalent to 30% of the baseline average annual P loads for three years after remediation. In-stream legacies do not approach exhaustion (95% remobilized) until at least 9 years after remediation. In hypothetical weather scenarios beginning with dry years, legacy contributions persist even longer. In aquatic ecosystems, light penetrating the sediment surface in shallow lakes may regulate the internal phosphorus (P) release through benthic primary production, which subsequently affects oxidation, pH levels, and alkaline phosphatase activity in the upper sediment. To study the effects of light exposure on the P dynamics at the sediment-water interface under eutrophic conditions, a two-month mesocosm experiment was conducted in twelve cement tanks (1000 L each). The tanks were equipped with Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lights, and surface sediments collected from eutrophic Lake Nanhu (China) were exposed to four different light intensities (0, 50, 100, 200 μmol m -2 s -1 ). The results revealed that: 1) Both the total phosphorus concentration and the phosphorus release flux from the sediment were lower in the light treatments (mean value, 0.59-0.71 mg L -1 and 0.00-0.01 mg m -2 d -1 , respectively) than in the control treatment (0.77 mg L -1 and 0.01 mg m -2 d -1 , respectively), indicating that light supplement could decrease the internal P release. 2) Benthic primary production promoted by light directly absorbed soluble reactive phosphorus and decreased the internal P release. Endogenous phosphorus (P) release from lake sediments is an important factor in the eutrophication of overlying waters, as P is the limiting nutrient salt affecting cyanobacterial growth. Microorganisms are also key to the evolution of cyanobacterial growth and disappearance, as they can influence the release of endogenous P. Meanwhile, endogenous phosphorus can also have an impact on microbial structure. However, there is a lack of studies on the response mechanisms between endogenous P release and microorganisms, as well as the exploration of endogenous P release on the whole cyanobacterial growth and disappearance evolution process. In this study, metagenome sequencing was used to characterize the microbial community structure at different times and to explain the P cycle from the perspective of functional genes. The results showed that the number of sediment microorganisms (genes) gradually increased with the P release capacity, and the outbreak with the strongest P release capacity possessed the most abundant microorganisms (genes). Proteobacteria with P solubilizing functions were consistently the most abundant phylum in all four periods and were positively correlated with P release potential assessment factors EPC 0 , EPC 0F , and NAP. Functional genes affect the P cycle by acting primarily on inorganic P solubilization, organic P mineralization, and P transport. These P-functional genes are mainly found in Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteria microorganisms. In addition, the P form in the sediments was dominated by IP, with the highest concentration (704.86 mg/kg) occurring during the dormant period. Sediments from this period acted as a strong P "sink", creating a precondition for cyanobacterial recovery and outbreaks to provide a source of P. To alleviate the problems of eutrophication and blue algae accumulation in water, biochar was prepared from blue algae dehydrated using polymerized ferrous sulfate(PFS) to absorb phosphate in water, and the biochar was activated using steam to adjust the pore structure. The preparation conditions of blue algae biochar were optimized using the response surface method. The optimal results were as follows:the dosage of PFS was 458 mg·L -1 , the carbonization temperature was 433℃, and the mass ratio of biochar precursor to steam was 1:11. Biochar without PFS(F 0 H 11 -433) and biochar with PFS(F 458 H 11 -433) were characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), zeta potential, and Raman spectra(Raman) were used to study whether blue algae biochar and PFS had a synergic effect on phosphate removal. The results showed that:compared with F 0 H 11 -433, iron oxide appeared on the surface, the zero point of charge(pH pzc ) increased from 4.41 to 6.19, and the disorder and defect degree of biochar was increased in F 458 H 11 -433. The pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model were suitable for describing the adsorption process of F 458 H 11 -433, and the saturated adsorption capacity was 31.97 mg·g -1 . F 458 H 11 -433 had excellent phosphorus removal efficiency in actual lake water, and the residual phosphate content of effluent was less than 0.025 mg·L -1 . In the presence of several common anions, it still showed excellent selective adsorption. After five cycles, the phosphate removal of F 458 H 11 -433 still reached 75.78%, indicating that F 458 H 11 -433 had the characteristic of being renewable. Combined with the material characterization results before and after adsorption, the phosphorus removal mechanism of F 458 H 11 -433 mainly involved electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange.

As one of the essential components in ecosystems, lakes play a major role in the global phosphorus (P) cycle. It is helpful for further understanding of the inside lake P geochemical cycle to research P pollution and storage in lakes, which is of positive significance for lake eutrophication restoration. In this study, we investigated the total phosphorus concentrations (TPC) of water and sediments from 37 lakes in the Eastern Plain Lake Zone (EPL) of China, evaluated the P pollution degree of lakes, and estimated P storage in lake sediments with quantitative data of lake area and number. The results indicate that the total phosphorus concentrations of water (TPCW) and total phosphorus concentrations of the surface sediments (0-1 cm, TPCSS) in EPL were high, the mean values were 0.11 mg·L -1 and 869.85 mg·kg -1 respectively, with obvious differences between urban and rural areas, as well as between different river basins. Over half (56.76% and 70.27% respectively) of the lakes reached severe pollution levels in water and surface sediments. There were 16224 lakes (> 0.01 km 2 ) with a total area of 21662.37 km 2 in the EPL, and the P storage in the lake sediments (0-30 cm) was about 4.87 ± 2.08 Tg (1 Tg = 1 × 10 12  g), accounting for about 2.74% of the basin soil. TPCW and TPCSS of lakes in the EPL were significantly positively correlated, may suggest a close nutrient cycling relationship between the lake water and the sediment. During periods of high winds and waves, the stored P in the top sediments in the EPL may continue to participate in the internal P geochemical cycle and migrate to the overlying water, posing a potential pollution hazard. Internal nutrient loading in shallow lakes has long been known as a key driver of eutrophication, especially after external loading reductions. Earlier efforts have been made to quantity the size and potential release of internal nutrient pools in lakes. Yet, links among substrates, microbial processes, and the size and actual release of internal nutrient pools remain largely unclear. To assess the links, sediment organic matter in Lake Taihu, China, was characterized by combining optical measurements, and lake-wide sediment gross nitrogen (N) transformations were measured using the stable isotope ( 15 N) dilution technique. Meanwhile, respirations and nutrient fluxes across the sediment-water interface (SWI) were measured by conducting intact core continuous-flow incubations. The cause-effect relationships among sediment physicochemical parameters (especially organic matter properties), gross N transformations, extractable nutrient concentrations, and nutrient fluxes across the SWI were revealed by partial least square path models. Results showed that environmental controls on the N transformation rates at different seasons varied, with sediment-derived dissolved organic matter abundance being more important than other variables in driving the rates during summer blooms. This study put a step toward revealing the significant positive effects of sediment organic matter mineralization on porewater nutrient concentrations and then on nutrient fluxes across the SWI at late season. The significant positive correlation between the gross N mineralization rates and ammonium fluxes across the SWI and the estimated considerable volume of net N mineralization in summer further suggested that algal blooms can get substantial inorganic N from sediment N mineralization during the lake N limitation period. Fundamental to all life, phosphorus is an essential nutrient and, contrastingly, a significant threat to surface water biodiversity globally as one of the most common causes of eutrophication in surface waters worldwide. Freshwater wetland ditches affected by these conditions undergo a conversion from primarily submerged aquatic vegetation to algae or duckweed dominance, leading to anoxic conditions. However, macrophyte biomass harvesting in eutrophic water systems is a promising means of remediation and nutrient recycling. This study seasonally assesses spatial distribution and chemical fractionation of surface water phosphorus, as well as surface biomass abundance and total phosphorus content in the ditch systems at West Sedgemoor (Somerset, UK), a designated site of special scientific interest. Elevated phosphorus concentrations in the surface water were observed across the site, with all sites exceeding e hi the Common Standards Monitoring environmental quality standard value of 0.1 mg L -1 during summer and autumn Sites lacking hydrological flow connectivity with contaminated freshwater inputs, typically had lower surface water phosphorus concentrations than the rest of the moor, with localised hotspots associated with likely cattle related agricultural activity. China's lowland rural rivers are facing severe eutrophication problems due to excessive phosphorus (P) from anthropogenic activities. However, quantifying P dynamics in a lowland rural river is challenging due to its complex interaction with surrounding areas. A P dynamic model (River-P) was specifically designed for lowland rural rivers to address this challenge. This model was coupled with the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) and the Phosphorus Dynamic Model for lowland Polder systems (PDP) to characterize P dynamics under the impact of dredging in a lowland rural river. Based on a two-year (2020-2021) dataset from a representative lowland rural river in the Lake Taihu Basin, China, the coupled model was calibrated and achieved a model performance (R 2 >0.59, RMSE<0.04 mg/L) for total P (TP) concentrations. Our research in the study river revealed that (1) the time scale for the effectiveness of sediment dredging for P control was ∼300 days, with an increase in P retention capacity by 74.8 kg/year and a decrease in TP concentrations of 23% after dredging. (2) Dredging significantly reduced P release from sediment by 98%, while increased P resuspension and settling capacities by 16% and 46%, respectively. (3) The sediment-water interface (SWI) plays a critical role in P transfer within the river, as resuspension accounts for 16% of TP imports, and settling accounts for 47% of TP exports. Change of hydrodynamic conditions is a key factor inducing sedimentation, water eutrophication and algal blooms in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). How to mitigate sedimentation and phosphorus (P) retention by improving hydrodynamic conditions in the Three Gorges Reservoir area (TGRA) is an urgent issue in the study of sediment and water environment. In this study, a Hydrodynamic-Sediment-Water quality model for the whole TGRA is proposed considering sediment and P inputs from numerous tributaries, and a new reservoir operation method namely the tide-type operation method (TTOM) is used to investigate the large-scale sediment and P transport in the TGR based on the model. Results indicate that the TTOM can reduce sedimentation and total phosphorus (TP) retention in the TGR. Compared with the actual operation method (AOM), sediment outflow and sediment export ratio (E ratio ) of the TGR increased about 17.13% and 1%-3% in 2015-2017, and sedimentation decreased about 3% under the TTOM. TP retention flux and retention rate (RE) decreased about 13.77% and 2%-4%. The flow velocity (V) and sediment carrying capacity (S*) increased about 40% in the local reach. Larger daily water level fluctuation at dam site is more conducive to reducing sedimentation and TP retention in the TGR. Sediment inputs from the Yangtze River, Jialing River, Wu River and other tributaries account for 59.27%, 11.21%, 3.81% and 25.70% of the total sediment inflow during 2015-2017, and TP inputs were 65.96%, 10.01%, 17.40% and 6.63%. In the paper, an innovative method is proposed to reduce sedimentation and P retention in the TGR under the given hydrodynamic conditions and related quantitative contribution driven by the proposed method is analyzed.
