Florida's largest natural gas retail distributor, Peoples Gas System Inc, signed a contract to receive 42,000 million cubic ft of natural gas per day when the SunShine Pipeline begins operation in 1995. An additional 25,000 Mcf/d will be added in 1997. Coastal Corp of Houston, TX, owns two-thirds of the pipeline and Florida Power Corp, which will become a 128,000 Mcf/d customer when the pipeline is working, owns one-third. The pipeline became necessary to satisfy Florida's energy and environmental needs.

Florida Power Corp (FPC) signed an agreement to buy a one-third interest in the $600 million natural gas pipeline to be built by Coastal Corp for $200 million. FPC will also become a partner in the SunShine Project for 25 years. FPC will own one-third of each of the two segments of the pipeline. The interstate segment will be regulated by the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and owned by Interstate Energy Services Co. The intrastate segment will be regulated by the Florida Public Service Commission and owned by Power Energy Services Co.
