The article investigates the production of anonymous texts in early modern England, focusing on the period when the printing industry has been emerging. It explores the characteristics and functions of anonymity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, particularly in relation to street literature. It further includes analyzing broadsheets, pamphlets, and other ephemeral printed materials.

In 1619, Marie de Médicis sought to regain her seat on the royal council by leading an armed revolt against her son King Louis XIII of France. She sought noble support through a pamphlet campaign attacking the king's advisers, and the king responded with his own series of pamphlets. The king's pamphlets were more widely read and more influential than his mother's because they responded directly to the problem of resolving the crisis. He portrayed himself as a young warrior king acting decisively as head of state, and his mother as a weak, confused woman who had abandoned her natural role as a mother and was being manipulated by selfish, quarreling great nobles. She did not counter with a convincing explanation of what she was trying to accomplish, and her supporters began to switch sides in large numbers during the autumn of 1620, thus resolving the crisis. This essay examines the literary texts of Pennsylvania's 1764 Paxton pamphlet war, giving close attention to the linguistic representations through which vying parties attempted to claim superiority in the Anglo-American sociopolitical hierarchy. Competing ethnic and political groups published creative literature (including poetry, dialogues, a farce, and a narrative) disparaging their opponents' British virtue and status by lampooning their literary and grammatical acuity and emphasizing their deviation from "acceptable" spoken English. Through analysis of the pamphlet war's portrayals of Quaker, American Indian, and Scots-Irish Presbyterian language, this essay demonstrates that the interrelated issues of language, virtue, and British identity were central to the concerns of provincial Pennsylvanians in 1764. This article provides one of the first studies of two late works by George Chapman, “Pro Vere” (1622) and “A iustification of a strange action of Nero” (1629). Through a close examination of these works, and through situating Chapman’s texts alongside other neglected works of the 1620s that voiced opposition to the Stuart court and kings, the article examines the critical and subversive role that classical history and gendered language played in forging ideological conflict in England during the Stuart period. The article offers information on the term "folheto," which could mean either booklet or pamphlet, largely employed by early twentieth-century Brazilian folklorists, poets and their audience. Folhetos are brochures that usually contain eight, sixteen or thirty-two pages and are always written in verse.

Throughout the Renaissance, there was a long tradition of popular street performance concerning poverty. Sometimes the singer lamented his own hardship; sometimes he voiced the plight of the poor in general. In the sixteenth century, in the face of dearth and economic decline, a number of such works were printed in cheap pamphlets, sometimes commissioned by the performer himself to sell after his show to the public assembled in the piazza or street. This article examines how such themes were expressed in oral and printed forms by looking at a number of popular works from this period that commented on or complained about the growing inequality of Italian society, the careless prodigality of the rich and the suffering of the poor. This article examines the role of street performers such as ballad singers and charlatans in the publication and sale of cheap printed pamphlets in northern Italian cities during the Renaissance. These mobile and usually socially marginal figures quickly became involved in the printing industry after its initiation in the later fifteenth century, and in this way carried on their established role as crucial cultural mediators, moving texts between different places, different social spheres, and different media. As well as publishing, performing, and selling works such as chivalric ballads, poetic accounts of recent wars, prognostications, and medical remedies, performers also were involved in the dissemination of texts more traditionally considered as 'high' literature, belonging to the restricted cultural sphere of the court or salon. In this way, they contributed to the wide dissemination of the works of eminent Renaissance authors, whether those authors approved of it or not. However, growing restrictions on the dissemination of print in the later sixteenth century reduced the freedom of movement of street performers, and diminished the remarkably creative and vibrant literary and performative culture in which they had played a central role. The article discusses the use of tracts, fliers, and leaflets to disseminate political speech during the social and civil unrest in France in 1968. It describes the use of political literature by student activists, the ways in which political protest literature fueled rioting in Paris, and the influence of Marxism on civil unrest, protest language, and political worldviews. Other subjects under discussion include political speech calling for revolution and social transformation, the use of satire in the political pamphlets, and the political significance and legacy of the May Revolutions in France.

The article focuses on the collaboration of author William Fox and Baptist bookseller Martha Gurney in publishing radical discourses in the U.S. during the 18th century. Both Fox and Gurney were able to publish 16 pamphlets ranging from the abolition of slave trade to the boycott of West Indian produce. Fox's first pamphlet "An Address to the People of Great Britain on the Propriety of Abstaining From the Use of West India Sugar and Rum" was recognized by many scholars for its role in the history of the abolitionist movement, but the author did not receive recognition not until in the later years.

The article discusses the portrayal of Elizabeth Caldwell as a female spiritual authority in the prose murder pamphlet "A True Discourse of the Practices of Elizabeth Caldwell," by Gilbert Dugdale. The pamphlet is said to narrate Caldwell's attempt to murder her husband, as well as her trial and execution. It is said that Calvinist theology interprets the narrative in a way that the interlocking patterns of Caldwell's subjection and authority are exposed. Also, Caldwell's words are found to contain a spiritual power, which is denied to women in the 1600s. Caldwell's death, said to be the price of her spiritual power, is one of the paradoxes revealed in an analysis of Dugdale's rhetorical strategy.

Abstract: Tattoo definitions from general, foreign language, medical dictionaries and textbooks are reviewed. In addition to the common usage “to mark the skin with pigments,” the word tattoo, used as a noun, first meant a signal on a drum or bugle to call military men to quarters. This chapter includes a variety of colorful, cultural and historical references. The increasing popularity of tattoos stimulated the American Academy of Dermatology to produce the 2004 brochure Tattoos, Body Piercing and Other Skin Adornments, which is reproduce here. When asked by patients about getting tattooed, it is wise to caution that even with the variety of modern techniques for removal available, some scarring may result. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

It is self-evident that tourist brochures are selling a positive and attractive destination to travellers; what is not as clear are the hidden messages conveyed by the selection of certain pictures in the brochures produced. By coding each picture appearing in a series of tourist brochures according to their content this research aims at showing how the brochures are overtly aimed at different groups of travellers, while they simultaneously are reinforcing certain hegemonic views of society. The suggestion that hegemonic messages appear is not an accusation against the producers of the brochures of covert propaganda, but rather that taken-for-granted views of society as unproblematic truths portrayed in the brochures is not correct — the brochures should rather be viewed as highly sensitive polysemic constructs. This article presents information regarding France in Shakespeare's Henry V. The plentiful stream of pamphlets on French affairs which issued from the London presses of men such as John Wolfe, Edward Aggas, William Wright and Richard Field depicted France as, on the one hand, the home of that viperous brood of Hispaniolized Leaguers, a garden laid waste by that haughty and aspiring house of Guyse. The consequences of this figural linkage between the two nations were predictable although they cannot but be surprising to those who lightly assume a perpetual hostility between France and England.

The article discusses the English poet and author William Wordsworth's "Resolution and Independence" among the late eighteenth-century treatises, articles, and pamphlets about poverty and the Poor Laws. The article adds that from this emerges a discourse on poverty that prescribes the semantic field of the phrase "the spirit of independence." By recuperating the discourse on poverty in which the poem takes part, the article seeks to renegotiate the historical curve of the poem to recover socially determinate resonances that have hitherto been lost in the poem's critical reception.

The article discusses the social arguments in early Reformation pamphlets and their significance for the German Peasants' war. The pamphlets contained genuine economic and social problems of the time, which played a significant role in the contradictions and tensions. Arguments were worked out based in the Bible which called into question the justice of certain feudal burdens including the tithe and other social abuses. Reformation writings of the years 1523 to 1524 are full of an increasing unease and a sense of crisis.
