Abstract

The dominance of plastics in the packaging market is due to their low weight and thickness, which save transportation costs. However, their non-biodegradability poses a significant threat to the environment. Paper, on the other hand, is considered as a safer alternative due to its natural composition and biodegradability. The porous structure of paper limits its application in packaging, and its poor water resistance further restricts its use in humid environments. Therefore, lamination is a method useful tool to improve the barrier properties of paper. Additionally, the researchers are focusing on developing biodegradable and water-based coatings with anti-fat properties as a green alternative to plastic packaging. The impact of a new grease-resistant coating composed of starch, gelatin and sodium alginate on the mechanical properties of paper was investigated through tensile, tearing, and bursting strength tests. The results showed significant improvements in the mechanical properties of the coated paper sheets. Furthermore, the biodegradability test indicated that the paper samples coated with the new composition showed a 50% weight loss after one week of incubation in the soil, and after three weeks, they exhibited 100% weight loss, demonstrating their outstanding biodegradability. Abstract

Wet-strength paper production is of great significance due to its prominent importance in everyday consumer activities. Recently, market demands for paper with specific properties and purposes are increasing. Production of these paper types is very challenging for the manufacturer since they have to meet very specific demands. Wet-strength paper products include bags that come in contact with moisture and wet products, hygienic and kitchen towels, paper towels, packaging products (packages for liquids, aseptic dishes, and a variety of packaging for food), and other special purposes items (tea bags, coffee filters, paper money, etc.) Throughout this research, the focus was on the effects a wetstrength agent has on the tensile strength of paper. The wet strength property of paper is the ratio between the strength of paper in the wet and dry state. The strength in the dry state comes from the hydrogen bonds present in natural cellulose, while the strength of paper in the wet state requires waterproof (covalent) bonds created by the use of a wet strength agent. The wet strength agent used is a cationic PAE resin. The aim of the work is to determine the optimal amount of agent needed in relation to the required value of the tensile strength property of the paper. The investigation of these influences was carried out on Semi Extensible Standard Kraft type of paper in Natron-Hayat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, fiber-based and functional paper food packaging has garnered significant attention for its versatility, excellent performance, and potential to provide sustainable solutions to the food packaging industry. Fiber-based food packaging is characterized by its large surface area, adjustable porosity and customizability, while functional paper-based food packaging typically exhibits good mechanical strength and barrier properties. This review summarizes the latest research progress on food packaging based on fibers and functional paper. Firstly, the raw materials used for preparing fiber and functional paper, along with their physical and chemical properties and roles in food packaging, were discussed. Subsequently, the latest advancements in the application of fiber and paper materials in food packaging were introduced. Durch Literaturrecherche und Auspackversuche von Stand-Up Hemdenverpackungen konnte festgestellt werden, dass bis zu 15 Packmittel aus unterschiedlichen Materialien zum Einsatz kommen. Grund dafür ist die hohe Anforderung der Optik an die Verpackung, welche den Kragen mit besonderen Verkaufsanreizen präsentieren soll, wobei die Nachhaltigkeit in den Hintergrund gerückt wird. Die Komponenten sind dabei aus Papier/Karton, Metall, Stoff und Kunststoff, wobei die Kunststoffkomponenten hauptsächlich wegen der Größe kleiner 5 x 5 cm vom Recycling ausgeschlossen werden. Die EU hat Recyclingziele bis 2025 und bis 2030 verabschiedet, welche mit den aktuell eingesetzten Verpackungsarten für Hemden nicht erreichbar ist. Papier und Kartonpackmittel sind recyclingfähig, jedoch darf der Endkonsument nicht für die richtige Entsorgung der Packmittel verantwortlich gemacht werden. Es gibt Versuche, Hemden verpackungsfrei zu verkaufen, was zu Umsatzeinbußen geführt hat. Ebenso wurde unverpackte Kleidung beim Versuch, eine Sortieranlage passieren zu lassen, beschädigt. Einige Unternehmen steigen auf Papierpackmittel um, welcher ökobilanzielle Vorteile bringt auf Kosten des Produktschutzes, wodurch wiederrum eine schützende Kunststoffschicht benötigt wird. Außerdem ist Papier undurchsichtig, was allerdings ein wichtiges Kriterium ist, da die Hang-Tags sowie das Hemd sichtbar sein sollen. Mehrwegsysteme rentieren sich erst nach einem gewissen Zeitraum und sind nur im Business to Business Bereich von großen Konzernen einsetzbar. Kleinere Unternehmen müssen hierfür Konzepte mit allen Akteuren erarbeiten. Literature research and unpacking tests of stand-up shirt packaging showed that up to 15 packaging materials made of different materials are used to pack shirts and blouses. The reason for this is the high demand on the visual appearance of the packaging, which is supposed to present the collar with special sales incentives, whereby sustainability is pushed into the background. Components of the packaging include paper/cardboard, metal, fabric and plastic, whereby the plastic components are mainly excluded from recycling because they are smaller than 5 x 5 cm. The EU has adopted recycling targets for 2025 and 2030, which will not be achieved with the types of packaging currently used for shirts and blouses. Paper and cardboard packaging are recyclable, but the end consumer should not be made responsible for the correct disposal of the packaging. Attempts have been made to sell shirts without packaging, resulting in sales losses. Similarly, unpackaged clothing has been damaged when attempting to pass through a sorting facility. Some companies are switching to paper packaging, which brings environmental benefits at the cost of product protection, which in turn requires a protective plastic layer. In addition, paper is opaque, which is an important criterion because the hang tags and the shirt should be visible. Another challenge in this area is that reusable systems are only profitable after a certain period of time and can only be used in the business-to-business sector. Smaller companies have to develop concepts for this with all stakeholders.

Abstract

Laminated paperboard and paper is widely used in packaging products. It generally exhibits highly anisotropic and nonlinear mechanical behavior. The aim of this study is to describe the in-plane material behavior with an orthotropic elastic-plastic model based on the observed experimental behavior. A structural tensor-based approach was applied to model the elastic deformation, while a multi-surface based yield criterion was adopted to describe the yield behavior. The model incorporated nonlinear kinematic and isotropic hardening to capture the anisotropic hardening effect. In the experiment, the compressive yield stress was found to be insensitive to the previous tensile deformation. The proposed model could capture this compression yield stress preserving effect under reverse loading, which in turn reduced the required material parameters as expected. With the material parameters calibrated from a set of simple uniaxial tests in various directions, the model was shown to predict the stress-strain behavior for other orientations satisfactorily. The model was further validated with experiments under complex loading conditions and found to capture the highly anisotropic, elastic-plastic behavior accurately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
