Recent archaeological research demonstrates that the south-central highlands was a region of important sociocultural developments during the Early Horizon (ca. 800-200 BC). One reason for the prominence of this region was the local availability of obsidian, a widely exchanged lithic material. In this paper, we discuss the results of a portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) sourcing study of a sample of 26 obsidian artifacts from the site of Pallaucha, an Early Horizon civic ceremonial center located near Vilcashuaman in the Department of Ayacucho, Peru. PXRF analysis demonstrates that the Quispisisa source was the most commonly exploited locality to acquire obsidian at Pallaucha even though other sources were in closer proximity. Our results complement the results of a study of a large sample of obsidian from the nearby, and partially contemporary, civic-ceremonial center of Campanayuq Rumi. Recientes investigaciones arqueológicas demuestran que la sierra centro-sur experimentó importantes desarrollos socioculturales durante el Horizonte temprano (ca. 800-200 a. C.). Una de las razones de la importancia de esta región fue la disponibilidad local de obsidiana, un material lítico con el que se comercia frecuentemente. En este artículo, presentamos y discutimos los resultados de un estudio de detección de fuentes de obsidiana mediante espectrometría de fluorescencia de rayos X portátil (pXRF) en una muestra de 26 artefactos provenientes del sitio de Pallaucha, un centro cívico-ceremonial del Horizonte temprano ubicado cerca de Vilcashuamán en el departamento de Ayacucho, Perú. El análisis pXRF muestra que la obsidiana de Quispisisa era la más explotada, a pesar de la existencia de otras fuentes en las cercanías de Pallaucha. Este resultado complementa y concuerda con el estudio de la obsidiana obtenida en Campanayuq Rumi, un centro cívico-ceremonial contemporáneo con Pallaucha. Des recherches archéologiques récentes montrent que les hautes terres de la région sud-centrale ont connu d’importants développements socioculturels au cours de l’Horizon Ancien (vers 800-200 av. Dans cet article, nous présentons et discutons des résultats d’une étude de détection des sources de provenance de l’obsidienne par spectrométrie de fluorescence X portable (pXRF) sur un échantillon de 26 artefacts provenant du site de Pallaucha, un centre cérémoniel civique de l’Horizon Ancien situé près de Vilcashuaman dans le département d’Ayacucho, au Pérou. L’analyse pXRF démontre que l’obsidienne de Quispisisa était la plus couramment exploitée, malgré l’existence d’autres sources dans les environs de Pallaucha. Nos résultats complètent ceux d’une étude portant sur un large échantillon de l’obsidienne provenant du centre civique et cérémoniel de Campanayuq Rumi, situé à proximité et partiellement contemporain.

The western part of what would later become the Silk Roads was very early traded for products over long distances. Thus, from the pre-ceramic Neolithic around 9000 BC, obsidian traveled throughout the Middle East for hundreds of kilometers. The search for rare or precious materials such as metals (gold, silver, copper, tin) or semi-precious stones (lapis lazuli, carnelian, chlorite) also led then, during the 5th-3rd millennia BC in particular, to the establishment of trade routes stretching from the Pamirs in the east to the Mediterranean coast in the west. To these raw materials must be added the trade in processed food, such as wine or olive oil or manufactured, such as glass, the distribution of which can be traced to Western Europe.; La partie occidentale de ce qui deviendra plus tard les Routes de la soie a très tôt été l’objet d’échanges de produits à longue distance. Ainsi, dès le Néolithique précéramique, vers 9 000 avant notre ère, l’obsidienne transitait dans tout le Proche-Orient sur des centaines de kilomètres. La recherche de matériaux rares ou précieux comme les métaux (or, argent, cuivre, étain) ou certaines pierres semi-précieuses (lapis-lazuli, cornaline, chlorite) ont également conduit ensuite, aux 5e-3e millénaires avant notre ère notamment, à la mise en place de routes commerciales s’étendant des monts du Pamir à l’est jusqu’à la côte méditerranéenne à l’ouest. À ces matières premières, il faut ajouter le commerce de denrées transformées comme le vin ou l’huile d’olive, ou manufacturées comme le verre, dont on peut suivre la diffusion jusqu’en Europe occidentale.

The Trets plain is located in the south-east of France, on the eastern border of Bouches-du-Rhône department. The entire plain contains a large number of Neolithic sites. La Bastidonne was discovered in the 1870s by Joseph Maneille, after the ploughing of a small vineyard located on the plateau at an altitude of 270 m, which brought to light abundant archaeological artifacts (lithic and pottery, now mostly lost), including several fragments of decorated stelae (fifteen according to the oldest publications, of which eleven are currently kept at the Musée d’archéologie nationale of Saint-Germain-en-Laye). This discovery follows that of eight Provençal stelae of la Puagère (Sénas, Bouches-du-Rhône) in 1838. At la Bastidonne, the fragments were found mixed with the remains of possible cremations (ashes and burnt “ human” bones). However, there has always been confusion as to their exact position as the author of the discovery considered that they had come from a “ destroyed dolmen”. Max Escalon de Fonton found smaller fragments of stelae in 1954, during the excavation of a burial to the south-east of the site, then again by André D’Anna in 1977-1978. The twenty-first fragment, the discovery of which is not documented, is kept by the Société d’études et de recherches de la haute vallée de l''Arc. Although the fragments make up the most important collection of Neolithic stelae known in the south of France, the stelae of la Bastidonne have only rarely been put into context. Made from a local limestone, which is tender, fine and chalky, the stelae, intended to be seen in an upright position (placed in the ground) and measuring no more than a few dozen centimetres high, were originally trapezoidal or triangular with a flat rectangular section. Engravings of complex geometric shapes (chevrons, “ fishbone” motifs, triangles and rhombuses) cover the stelae, with a smooth sub-rectangular hollow in the middle representing a schematic face. The eyes, nose and mouth are absent in most cases, but the shoulders and the upper part of the bust are sometimes depicted. Traces of red dye were also detected on several fragments in the late 19th century. Four other Provençal stelae, from Le Beaucet and Gargas, in the Vaucluse were also found to have traces of the same dye cinnabar (HgS) or mercury sulphide, which is rare in its natural form. Although it has not been possible to determine the origin of the pigment, Spain and Italy provide several examples of its use in funerary contexts dating to the 5th and the 3rd millennium BC. The remaining traces of cinnabar on the la Bastidonne stelae though not organised show that at least the engraved face and the edges were completely covered. The lithic artifacts unearthed in the mid-1950s and late 1970s at la Bastidonne as well as at Sainte-Catherine – a site located less than 1 km away probably belonging to the same group– are dated to the Middle Neolithic, first half of the 4th millennium BC. Bedoulian flint from Vaucluse (which has been heated or not) is the dominant raw material and Sardinian obsidian (Mount Arci) is also present in small quantities. The assemblage comprises of several dozen geometric bitroncatures, the blades of polished axes made from a green stone from the Alps and beads. The burial excavated by Max Escalon de Fonton has provided characteristic pottery forms (carenated cups, keeled bowls, etc.). Despite their non-stratigraphic position, the stelae of la Bastidonne, like all the fifty stelae or fragments of stelae belonging to the Provençal subgroup B (duranciennes stelae or stelae with chevrons) and dating to between 3900 and 3600 BC, appear as some of the oldest examples of anthropomorphic statuary in the southeast of France and the western Mediterranean. The radiocarbon dates of a new discovery in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence seem to confirm this. The stelae were probably intended to be displayed in small or large groups ; their link to the funerary context has not as yet been fully established., La plaine de Trets, en limite orientale des Bouches-du-Rhône, recèle un grand nombre de sites néolithiques. Dans les années 1870, après un labour, celui de la Bastidonne livra un très abondant mobilier archéologique ainsi que quinze fragments de stèles décorées. L’ensemble des vestiges était mêlé à de possibles restes de crémations mais il règne depuis toujours une grande confusion quant à la position exacte des fragments de stèles au moment de la découverte. D’autres plus petits fragments ont été récoltés par la suite. Bien qu’elles constituent le plus riche regroupement connu dans le Sud-Est de la France, les stèles néolithiques de la Bastidonne n’ont que rarement fait l’objet de descriptions systématiques dans leur contexte. Réalisées dans un calcaire local, elles étaient de forme trapézoïdale ou triangulaire et ne mesuraient pas plus de quelques dizaines de centimètres de haut. Les fragments affichent un décor géométrique gravé et sculpté. La représentation schématique du visage se limite dans la plupart des cas à une plage creuse et lisse, subrectangulaire. En outre, d’importantes traces de pigment rouge ont été décelées dès la fin du XIXe siècle. Celles-ci ne présentent pas d’organisation particulière et l’ensemble de la face décorée de même que les chants devaient être ainsi badigeonnés. Les récentes analyses ont montré qu’il s’agit de cinabre. Le mobilier lithique récolté à la Bastidonne ainsi qu’à Sainte-Catherine – une station située à moins d’un kilomètre et qui a pu appartenir au même ensemble – doit être attribué à une étape récente du Néolithique moyen. Si l’on ajoute à cela les dates radiocarbones d’une nouvelle découverte dans les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, les stèles de la Bastidonne, comme l’ensemble des quelques cinquante stèles ou fragments de stèles du sous-groupe provençal à chevrons, apparaissent comme l’une des plus anciennes manifestations d’art statuaire anthropomorphe de Méditerranée occidentale, entre 3900 et 3600 av. International audience; This paper details an integrated characterisation study of a substantial assemblage of obsid-ian artefacts (n = 519) from the Syrian Neolithic site of Qdeir 1 (El Kowm oasis). The results of the chemical characterisation (using ED-XRF and SEM-EDS) have been coupled with the typo-technological data. Such an approach has allowed us (i) to identify four raw materials in the assemblage, namely Bingöl A and Bingöl B from eastern Anatolia, plus Göllü Da˘ g and Nenezi Da˘ g from central Anatolia, (ii) to specifically source the distinctive green peralkaline obsidian to Bingöl A (rather than 'Bingöl A and/or Nemrut Da˘ g'), (iii) to observe that these four raw materials were consumed in a nigh-identical manner, probably worked locally by specialist craftspeople to produce fine pressure flaked blades, and (iv) to hypothesise that the people of Qdeir 1 may have played a key redistributive role in the circulation of obsidian tools, likely supplying the neighbouring village of El Kowm.; Cet article présente une étude de caractérisation intégrée d’un assemblage d’artefacts en obsidienne (n = 519) provenant du site Néolithique de Qdeir 1 (Syrie, oasis d’El Kowm). Les résultats de la caractérisation chimique, menée par ED-XRF et SEM–EDS, ont été couplés aux données de la lecture typo-technologique. Une telle approche nous a permis (i) d’identifier l’utilisation de quatre matières premières au sein de l’assemblage, soit Bingöl A et Bingöl B (Anatolie orientale), ainsi que Göllü Dağ et Nenezi Dağ (Anatolie centrale), (ii) de spécifier l’origine des artefacts de composition peralcaline (Bingöl A), (iii) de montrer que les matières premières en question ont été consommées d’une manière similaire, probablement travaillées localement par des tailleurs « spécialisés » pour produire des lames débitées par pression, (iv) d’argumenter que les habitants de Qdeir 1 ont pu jouer un rôle dans la redistribution des outils en obsidienne, certainement en approvisionnant le village voisin d’El Kowm.

A total of 266 obsidian items were found during four seasons of excavation at the Late Prehistoric site of Ein Zippori, Israel. Most of the assemblage was assigned to the Wadi Rabah culture. The obsidian artefacts originated in three Anatolian sources – Cappadocian Göllü Dağ and eastern Anatolian Bingöl A and B. Several colour and texture differences were noticed on some of the items from the different sources. The presence of items such as flakes, blades, core trimming elements, cores and tools reflect some on-site production. The high ratio of tools and bladelet segments to other debitage items may indicate an import of prepared bladelets and tools to the site as well. Pressure was dominantly used, probably alongside percussion, and signs of non-specialized production may be apparent. Tool design and retouch characteristics point to a highly standardized transverse arrowhead production (or import), several different bead-making traditions, and a distinction between the shaping (retouch) of blade and bladelet tools, perhaps indicating a distinction in use., Au cours de quatre campagnes de fouille sur le site préhistorique d’Ein Zippori (Israël), 266 objets en obsidienne ont été trouvés. La plus grande partie de l’assemblage a été datée de la culture de Wadi Rabah. Les outils en obsidienne proviennent de trois sources en Anatolie – Göllü Dağ en Cappadoce et Bingöl A et B en Anatolie orientale. Plusieurs nuances dans la couleur et la texture ont été observées sur certains objets provenant de ces trois sources. Obsidian sourcing began in 1964 with studies by Renfrew and Cann. These authors demonstrated that one given volcano there is only one chemical signature. Based on this principle, it is possible to attribute one archaeological artefact to one volcano. This attribution allows then to develop studies on the contacts/exchanges/movements between prehistorical populations which are a key to understand past socio-cultural contexts from the Paleolithic to the Chalcolithic. Lithic assemblages in archaeological sites in the Near East contain indeed obsidian artefacts. As there is no volcano emplaced south of the Eastern Anatolian highlands, the nearest volcanic areas with obsidian outcrops that would attract near-eastern populations are located in Central and Eastern Anatolia (Cauvin et al., 1998). Taking advantage of the opening of Eastern Anatolia to field researches after 2000, and aiming at collecting scientific field data about obsidian sources in that region (especially on the volcano/outcrop scales geological and geomorphological contexts), the GéObs Project has obtained a 3 to 4 years ANR support for the study of the volcanic regions of Eastern Anatolia. Among these regions, four are concerned by our study: the Meydan-Gürgürbaba, Nemrut, Solhan and Alatepe regions. The ANR project GéObs, led by D. Mouralis (Rouen Univ./IDEES), associated with C. Kuzucuoglu (Paris 1 Univ./LGP) and L. Astruc (Paris 1 Univ./ArScan) enhances: 1) the identification of obsidian outcrops (some of which had not yet been identified), 2) the discrimination of these outcrops according to their characteristics (accessibility and types), 3) the characterization of obsidian glass (micro facies; geochemistry; mineralogy), and consecutive reconstruction of their emplacement modes. This research, based on the necessary completeness of data collection in the field, demonstrates the importance of such a new approach in the domain of “obsidian sourcing” researches., Les études de provenance sur l’obsidienne se développent depuis 1964 quand ont été publiés les premiers travaux de Renfrew et Cann. Ces deux chercheurs ont démontré que chaque complexe volcanique possède une signature chimique propre permettant l’attribution d’artefacts archéologiques en obsidienne à un complexe volcanique présentant la même signature. Cette attribution fondée sur la géochimie permet d’envisager des routes de diffusion de l’obsidienne soulignant les contacts et les déplacements de populations préhistoriques. De nombreux sites archéologiques situés au Proche-Orient comportent en effet des assemblages lithiques présentant des artefacts en obsidienne. La synthèse dirigée par Cauvin et al., en 1998 suggère, pour le Proche-Orient, deux grandes régions d’approvisionnement en obsidienne : l’Anatolie centrale et l’Anatolie orientale. Or, pour des raisons liées à l’histoire intérieure de la Turquie dans les années 1980-1990, peu de données de terrain ont pu être rassemblées sur les sources d’Anatolie orientale jusqu’à ces toutes dernières années. Pourtant, les comparaisons entre affleurements repérés et prélevés avant les années 1980 montrent déjà clairement l’importance de la région pour les études de provenance d’artefacts collectés lors de fouilles de sites archéologiques en Anatolie orientale (ex : Çayönü, Körtik Tepe etc.), en Syrie (Tell Brak, Tell Zeidan, Khazna) et en Irak (Tell Arpachiyah, Tell Hamoukar, Um Dabaghiyah). Cette thèse, réalisée dans le cadre de l’ANR GeObs dirigée par D. Mouralis (Univ. Rouen, IDEES) en association avec C. Kuzucuoğlu (Univ. Paris 1, LGP) et L. Astruc (Univ. Paris 1, ArScan) et E. Akköprü (Univ. Van, Turquie), se concentre sur quatre régions volcaniques d’Anatolie orientale : le Meydan-Gürgürbaba, le Nemrut, et les massifs de dômes de Solhan et Alatepe. Ce travail de recherche a exploré : 1) l’identification et la caractérisation de plusieurs gisements (= « sources ») d’obsidienne, dont certains inconnus jusque-là ; 2) la discrimination de ces affleurements en fonction de leurs caractéristiques physiques et chimiques ; 3) la reconstitution de leur mode de mise en place lorsque cela a été rendu possible. Notre travail, basé sur l’importance incontournable de la connaissance experte du terrain, constitue une méthode novatrice dans les études de provenance.

In 2013 excavations near Vernègues (Bouches-du Rhône), “ Cazan-Le Clos du Moulin”, revealed an important occupation site dating from the Middle Neolithic (late Chassey culture). The village of Vernègues is located just south of the Massif du Luberon, approximately 60 km north-west of Marseille and the Mediterranean. The area excavated, a little over one hectare, is located in the centre of a small valley which joins the valley of the Durance just to the north. This valley is remarkable for the density of Neolithic remains and “ Cazan-Le Clos du Moulin” is situated in the centre of a cluster of sites. The different sites form a discontinuous network across the floor of the valley, which is undoubtedly linked to the network of watercourses which drain the valley. While no occupation ground was uncovered during the excavation, over 600 archaeological features were preserved. These features record one of the first structured dwelling sites for this period in the south of France. The occupation of this site has been dated by eight radiocarbon dates (4100 -3800 BCE) and a large assemblage of archaeological finds, which confirm the attribution to the late Chassey culture. The site contained many pits, five wells and a concentration of twenty burnt stone combustion features, which are typical of this period. Through analysis of these structures we observe how two pairs of wells seem to have functioned together, particularly in their secondary use as middens. The burnt stone combustion features are all circular and organised into four sub-parallel lines. These features group two different types of hearths, which may reflect a chronological difference or differences in use. However, the most notable aspect of this site resides in the discovery of many postholes and foundation pits, which trace the outline of at least fifteen different architectural structures. These are the earliest buildings recorded for the late Chassey in the south of France. They notably consist of ten houses which were implanted on well-preserved postholes. These structures repeat the same overall plan, based around a dozen posts organised into two aisles, with a probable ridge beam extending beyond the ridge purlin. Two smaller posts in front of the southern gable end probably indicate the location of an entrance. The surface area of these buildings varies between 80 and 180 m ² . There are few comparable examples for these structures for this period and they are markedly distinct from other examples in France or in northern Italy, which are generally rectangular in plan and frequently have foundation trenches. In addition, three other architectural structures have been identified, which are defined by a series of very large foundation pits. The pits are rectangular in plan with asymmetric profiles (at times triangular, occasionally trapezoidal) : they can be up to 2 m deep with an over-cut at the base. We find even fewer archaeological parallels for these buildings. However their construction clearly demanded a significant investment of time and effort, which could indicate the coordination of a group or community of individuals. All of these buildings follow a plan which was clearly collectively predefined ; all the buildings are orientated NW-SE, which coincides with the prevailing wind in the valley. Moreover, the distribution of these postholes and pits indicates that several houses were completely rebuilt in the same place, up to two to three times. Each new phase of construction was preceded by the partial deconstruction of the remains of the previous phase. We note that some of the posts had clearly begun to decompose in situ, prior to being burnt and/ or removed. Finally, some of the pits/ postholes from the previous phases were backfilled with stones and broken fragments of querns. Analysis of the archaeological finds has not allowed us to establish a relative chronology between these different buildings or the diverse features. However, it has enabled us to define several zones of activity, specifically related to the working of flint and obsidian. The obsidian comes from Sardinia and we have observed elements associated with shaping and working nuclei as well as debitage from a knapping area which were found in a well. Obsidian is not the only example of imported material found ; it is accompanied by several ceramic and earthenware objects (including a loom weight) and a copper awl, all of which probably originate from northern Italy. Furthermore, analysis of the querns recovered from the postholes and analysis of the marks on the worked flints indicate agricultural activities related to grain farming. The faunal remains were almost exclusively recovered from the deposits infilling the wells. These remains record the importance of caprines in the livestock, indicating pastoral activities were also important at Cazan, as at many other sites of the same period. These different activities imply a domestic occupation, seemingly permanent, in a predominantly anthropogenically modified landscape (based on malacological analysis). The preliminary analysis of the snail assemblage indicates an open environment during the late Chassey culture, and this observation seems to be confirmed by the charcoal analysis. Furthermore, the study of the charcoal from the postholes and hearths allows us to distinguish the selection of different species of wood : oak is used for the posts while strawberry tree (arbutus unedo) is used as fuel. These results suggest the attachment of the Chassey population to this place and the surrounding landscape, which they occupied and reoccupied several times over 300 years. While an important part of their activity was based around a mobile lifestyle and pastoral management, this site allows us to consider the concept of a Neolithic village. These first results presented here renew the debate and research concerning the character of the occupation of this landscape during this period., Une fouille réalisée en 2013 à Cazan «le Clos du Moulin » Vernègues (Bouches-du Rhône) a permis de mettre en évidence une importante occupation du Chasséen récent en fond de vallon. Aucun niveau de sol n’a été retrouvé, mais plus de 600 structures en creux permettent de documenter un des premiers sites d’habitat structuré de cette période dans le Sud de la France. Les attributions chronologiques reposent sur huit datations au 14C comprises en 4100 et 3800 avant notre ère et sur un abondant mobilier archéologique qui concorde avec l’attribution à une étape récente du Chasséen. Le gisement livre plusieurs fosses, des puits et une concentration de structures à pierres chauffées, mais aussi et surtout de nombreux trous de poteau et fosses d’implantation qui permettent de restituer les plans d’environ quinze bâtiments. Ces derniers correspondent notamment à dix édifices standards ; trois ensembles architecturaux plus imposants s’insèrent au sein de cette organisation et traduisent sans doute la présence d’édifices socialement plus valorisés. L’analyse du mobilier archéologique ne permet pas de déterminer assurément de chronologies relatives au sein de ces structures et aménagements, mais elle met en évidence plusieurs zones d’activités privilégiées en particulier pour le travail du silex et de l’obsidienne. Ces activités signent une occupation domestique a priori pérenne au sein d’un paysage largement anthropisé et maitrisé d’après les observations anthracologiques et malacologiques. L’ensemble de ces résultats tend à prouver l’attachement des populations chasséennes à ce territoire où elles se sont installées et ont vécues. International audience; During Teotihuacan’s apogee, the city served as a hub for the grandest rituals and most robust economic system in Mesoamerica. Tens of thousands of individuals gathered regularly for religious spectacles designed to sustain the cosmos and time itself. They also appear to have gathered in similar numbers to manufacture and exchange products with origins in all corners of Mesoamerica. Ritual and economy were often intertwined in the daily practices of Teotihuacanos, both within their households and next to the city’s monumental temple complexes. During Teotihuacan’s apogee, the city served as a hub for the grandest rituals and most robust economic system in Mesoamerica. Tens of thousands of individuals gathered regularly for religious spectacles designed to sustain the cosmos and time itself. They also appear to have gathered in similar numbers to manufacture and exchange products with origins in all corners of Mesoamerica. Ritual and economy were often intertwined in the daily practices of Teotihuacanos, both within their households and next to the city’s monumental temple complexes. In the early 15th century, the cazonci (sovereign) Tariacuri initiated expansion of the Tarascan kingdom by starting wars of conquest. This expansion was continued by his successors. The Acámbaro region (Guanajuato, Mexico) was thus conquered in the middle of 15th century by the Tarascan kingdom. Due to the obsidian quarries of Ucareo-Zinapécuaro and salt-working on the shores of the Cuitzeo lagoon, the region became a strategic zone. These raw materials attracted the envy of the neighbouring Mexica, a people living just east of the Tarascan kingdom. As a result of this continuous threat from the Mexica, Acámbaro became a border post. Approximately a century later, Mexico fell under Spanish domination. The province of Acámbaro, a fertile valley, was very quickly exploited, in particular to supply the food necessary for the silver mines in the north and the great urban centres. Different economic principles emerge in this context, redefining settlement and territorial strategies. The preliminary results of this research suggest much exploitation of the various resources of the area in the Early Postclassic and the beginning of colonial times, resources which were vital for the development of the Tarascan kingdom and then the Spanish empire.

Excavation and systematic surface collection since 1999 have revealed the outlines of a unique site in Northern Mesopotamia. Khirbat al-Fakhar is an extensive settlement of 300 ha, primarily occupied during the LC 1-2 periods (ca 4400-3800 cal. BC). Systematic surface collection, satellite imagery analysis, and targeted excavation allow a preliminary characterization of its settlement, in particular the abundance of evidence for intensive obsidian manufacture. This unexpectedly large and early settlement presents problems of demography, nature of sedentism, permanence of occupation, and obsidian manufacture and trade. In this article we discuss these issues in the light of current accounts of the development of societal complexity and urbanism in the region and argue that Khirbat al-Fakhar had characteristics of both villages and cities, qualifying it as proto-urban., Les fouilles et prospections systématiques menées entre 1999 et 2010 ont révélé les contours d’un site unique dans le nord de la Mésopotamie. Khirbat al-Fakhar est un vaste établissement de 300 ha, qui a été occupé essentiellement au cours des périodes 1 et 2 du Chalcolithique récent (ca 4400-3800 cal. BC). Les prospections de surface menées de manière systématique, l’analyse des images satellites et une fouille ciblée permettent de proposer une caractérisation préliminaire de cet établissement et d’y souligner en particulier une production intensive sur obsidienne. [EN] The analysis of obsidian exchange allows for a better understanding of systems of interaction between sedentary villages at the onset of the Near Eastern Neolithic. The down-the-line model of obsidian exchange has prevailed as the mechanism used to explain obsidian distribution between villages. However, archaeological data on the quantity of obsidian present in Neolithic sites, mathematical simulations of this model and of alternative ones, and the analysis of the ethnographic record suggest that a more complex model of exchange existed during this period. In this paper, we use regression analysis to analyze archaeological data currently available, and a complex network model is proposed for obsidian exchange that we test through mathematical modelling. Finally, using archaeological and ethnographic data, we explore the social and economic implications of the existence of a complex network of exchange and interaction between Neolithic villages., [FR] L'étude des échanges d'obsidienne permet d'obtenir une meilleure connaissance des systèmes d'interaction entre les villages sédentaires au début du Néolithique au Proche-Orient. Le modèle d'échange d'obsidienne, down-the-line, a dominé pour expliquer la diffusion de l'obsidienne entre les villages néolithiques. In this work the fission-track dating method was applied for the identification of the provenance of 26 obsidian artefacts excavated from the Late Chalcolithic levels of the Tell Afis archaeological site (north-western Syria). Results of this study confirm the belonging of the Tell Afis site to the north-western Levantine province, since most artefacts originated from central Anatolian sources. Presence of some artefacts originated from the eastern Anatolian source area of Bingôl documents contacts also with the middle Euphrates river valley. A unique artefact showed unknown fission- track parameters and should be related to an unknown source. This result confirms the need of further field work aimed to enhance knowledge of the potential natural sources of raw material of this region., Dans ce travail, la méthode de datation par traces de fission de l'Uranium a été appliquée pour déterminer la provenance de 26 obsidiennes des niveaux du Chalcolithique final dans le site archéologique de Tell Afis (nord-ouest de la Syrie). International audience; In the last fifty years obsidian provenance studies have become important in archaeology. Most of the time, an analytical characterisation is required to determine the origin of raw material. Recent advances in instrumentation offer a more flexible and rapid implementation of analyses. New challenges therefore arise for archaeometrists, archaeologists, lithicist, to integrate strategies for studying obsidian chaînes opératoires and analytical characterisation. Based on recent studies, this paper presents some statements on the current evolutions of research around the archaeometry of obsidian and the associated methodological challenges.; Les études de provenance de l'obsidienne se développent en archéologie depuis cinquante ans. Celles-ci nécessitent la plupart du temps le recours à une caractérisation analytique des artefacts pour en déterminer l'origine. Les progrès récents des instruments permettent une mise en œuvre plus souple et rapide des analyses. De nouveaux enjeux surgissent donc pour les archéomètres, archéologues, lithiciens, pour intégrer les stratégies d'étude des chaînes opératoires de l'obsidienne et les caractérisations analytiques. Sur la base d'études récentes, cet article présente quelques réflexions sur les évolutions actuelles des recherches autour de l'archéométrie de l'obsidienne et les enjeux méthodologiques à relever.

Knapped obsidian currently represents the first documented evidence for exchanges between Southern Arabia and Eastern Africa across the Red Sea, dating back to the Neolithic, at least 8.000 years ago. Although obsidian sources are known in Yemen, particularly in the Isbîl and al-Lîsî mountains, the results of a discriminant analysis, bearing on 122 samples from 14 archaeological sites, analyzed for trace elements using the fluorescence method XRF, point to an African origin for the obsidian artefacts found at archaeological sites in Southern Arabia (Yemen and Dhofar) from the Neolithic onwards., L'obsidienne taillée est actuellement le plus ancien témoignage des échanges reconnus à travers la mer Rouge entre le sud de l'Arabie et l'Afrique orientale. In the late fifth and early fourth millennium in the central and northern regions of the Mediterranean, several specialized chipped stone productions have been documented. Following Perlès, specialization is here defined as an activity carried out by a limited number of groups or individuals in order to redistribute the products within a wider community. In southern France, numerous studies have shown the complexity of the production of pressure-knapped bladelets in heated Bedoulian blond flint in Chasséen contexts. The preforms were prepared and heated near the flint outcrops. Some bladelets were made in that area and were distributed as blanks. Some preforms were also distributed, sometimes hundreds of kilometres away from the outcrops, and were knapped there. In Corsica, the work of L. J. Costa highlighted the presence of types of production that are reminiscent of those of the Chasséen culture. The main difference is that, here, the pressure-knapped bladelets were made from obsidian from the Monte Arci outcrops in Sardinia. Detailed analysis of the obsidian chipped stone industry from Monte Grosso in the northeastern part of the island clarifies the similarities and differences between the two types of production and permits their organization to be more precisely defined. This site was excavated during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The oldest occupation corresponds to the Basian culture, during the first half of the fourth millennium. The site was also occupied during the Bronze Age, at the end of the third millennium. We studied 1762 obsidian chipped stones from both levels. The near absence of obsidian in Corsican Bronze Age sites allows most, if not all, of the obsidian artefacts to be attributed to the Neolithic phase. The technique, the morphology and the dimensions of the bladelets are very homogenous even if there are two different types of preparation for the platform (plain/ linear/ punctiform, dihedral/ faceted). A small circular crack visible on the platform of a few of them indicates the possible use of a copper tip at the end of the pressure crutch used for the knapping of at least part of the bladelets. Flakes from the first phases of the chaîne opératoire are very scarce in comparison with the bladelets from the full operation. There are only 2 cores, both in an exhausted state, and we identified only 2 flakes made from former bladelet cores. The presence of rejuvenation flakes attests that knapping of the bladelets was carried out at least partly on the site. This suggests that, most of the time, the bladelet cores were introduced to the site already in an advanced phase of knapping, and left the site before the end of bladelet production. The regularity of the knapping, considered among other criteria through the analysis of the operative code, indicates that the knappers were very skilful. Considering the quantity of bladelets found on the site, we suggest that their working by local knappers is very unlikely. We propose that the bladelets were made by itinerant knappers coming regularly to the site with bladelet cores, producing some bladelets, and taking any incompletely exploited bladelet cores away with them when they left. Broadening our perspective, this model could also be applied to other Corsican sites like Basi. Beyond this island, only very small amounts of obsidian reached the continent, with the notable exception of a few sites, like Terres Longues (Bouches-du-Rhône) which has yielded 4548 obsidian artefacts. On this site, the obsidian from Monte Arci was probably introduced as preforms and/ or as bladelet cores already partly processed. Obsidian bladelets were produced here and were then probably distributed as blanks to other sites in the south of France. In northern Italy, there is no evidence of such intensive obsidian bladelet production. However, the presence of a few cores indicates that at least part of the bladelets found there were made locally. Considering this, it is conceivable that the presumed itinerant knappers in Corsica were able to reach the shores of Italy and France to produce bladelets which were distributed as blanks to the inland regions. Such a model has not been considered so far because the similarities between obsidian and Bedoulian heated flint knapping in southern France, especially at Terres Longues, were so strong that they were presumed to have been made by the same knappers. However, the analysis of Monte Grosso shows the presence of obsidian knapping very close to that used for Bedoulian heated flint but in an area relatively remote from southern France. These similarities include not only the raw material, since heated flint and obsidian have equivalent properties, but also the morphology and dimensions of the blanks and also the organization of their production. The productivity of these types of knapping, as testified by experiments, is considerable and the frequency of such bladelets on archaeological sites is relatively moderate. The technical characteristics of such knapping also indicate that the knappers were very skilled and well trained. Consequently, the hypothesis of many knappers making only a few bladelets each year is not sustainable. They would not have been able to acquire, maintain and transmit the skills involved in this knapping activity. These heated Bedoulian flint bladelets and these obsidian bladelets were in both cases made by very small groups of specialists. These specialists were mobile, at least for the obsidian production. However, analysis of the distribution of both raw materials shows marked differences. The flint bladelets are distributed mostly in inland regions and never reach Corsica or Sardinia. There is no clear geographical difference in their frequency and their management : some sites very remote from the outcrops have yielded as many bladelets as sites nearer to them. The only exception is Catalonia where this material was probably especially valued, as is shown by the presence of cores and bladelets in graves. The obsidian bladelets are distributed mainly in coastal areas, even if several examples can be found far inland in Southern France and Northern Italy. There are strong geographical differences in their distribution. Paradoxically, we have not so far found any obsidian pressure knapped bladelets in Sardinia. In contrast, they are abundant in Corsica. We suggest that they are here as important as the heated Bedoulian flint bladelets in Southern France. They are very rare on the continent. Considering their distribution and their presence even on sites very far from the coast, and considering the fact that their rarity cannot be explained by the difficulty in supplying obsidian to sites very far from the sources, we agree with the idea already proposed by some scholars, that obsidian was especially valued on the continent. We suggest that this value was probably linked to the raw material and not to the technique or morphology of the artefacts., À la fin du Ve et au début du IVe millénaire dans les régions centrales et septentrionales de la Méditerranée, plusieurs productions lithiques spécialisées se développent. Dans le Sud de la France, les nombreux travaux sur les débitages de lamelles par pression en silex bédoulien chauffé en contexte chasséen montrent la complexité de l’organisation de ces activités. En Corse, les travaux de L. J. Costa ont mis en lumière la présence de productions qui ne sont pas sans évoquer celles du Chasséen, à la différence qu’elles sont réalisées ici sur l’obsidienne provenant du Monte Arci en Sardaigne. L’analyse détaillée de l’industrie lithique en obsidienne du Monte Grosso (Haute-Corse) permet de préciser les analogies et les différences entre les deux débitages et de préciser leur organisation. Dans cette occupation, on montre que les lamelles d’obsidienne ont probablement été réalisées par des tailleurs spécialisés itinérants au cours de leurs passages réguliers dans le site. En élargissant notre point de vue, on constate qu’un tel schéma a pu se répéter également dans d’autres sites corses, comme Basi. Au-delà de cette île, l’obsidienne ne parvient qu’en faibles quantités sur le continent, à l’exception notable de quelques sites comme Terres Longues dans les Bouches-du-Rhône. Dans ce site, des lamelles en obsidienne ont été produites et ont probablement été distribuées sous forme de supports bruts vers d’autres occupations du Sud de la France. En Italie du Nord, aucun site n’atteste d’un débitage important de telles lamelles, bien que la présence de quelques nucléus indique un débitage sur place au moins dans quelques sites. En considérant ces éléments, il est envisageable que les tailleurs itinérants supposés en Corse aient pu rejoindre les rivages de l’Italie et de la France pour y débiter des lamelles qui ont ensuite été distribuées sous forme de supports bruts vers les régions éloignées des côtes. Un tel modèle n’avait pas été envisagé jusqu’à présent car les similitudes entre les modalités de débitage de l’obsidienne et du silex bédoulien chauffé sur le continent suggéraient qu’ils étaient l’oeuvre des mêmes tailleurs. Or l’analyse du site du Monte Grosso montre la présence de débitages très proches de ceux en silex bédoulien chauffé mais sur obsidienne et dans une région relativement éloignée du Sud de la France. Ces ressemblances concernent non seulement la matière première, puisque le silex chauffé et l’obsidienne ont des propriétés équivalentes, mais aussi la morphologie et les dimensions des supports, ainsi que leur mode de production. L’implication de petits groupes de spécialistes itinérants, qui est probable pour les productions sur obsidienne, est envisageable au moins sur une partie des productions en silex bédoulien chauffé. L’analyse des modalités de distribution des deux matières premières montre au contraire des différences profondes. Les éléments en silex sont distribués exclusivement dans les régions continentales et ne parviennent jamais en Corse ou en Sardaigne. Il n’apparaît aucune différence claire dans les modalités et l’ampleur de leur diffusion sur toutes les zones considérées, en dehors de la Catalogne où cette matière se trouve dans des dépôts funéraires. La distribution des lamelles en obsidienne, qui est essentiellement maritime, présente au contraire des contrastes majeurs entre les régions. Paradoxalement, ces lamelles ne sont pas documentées en Sardaigne. Elles sont par contre abondantes en Corse où elles semblent tenir le même rôle que celui des lamelles en silex bédoulien chauffé dans les sites chasséens du Sud de la France. Elles sont très rares sur le continent et semblent y avoir été valorisées de manière particulière. Ces deux productions spécialisées présentent donc des aspects contradictoires. Elles sont équivalentes par leurs caractéristiques physiques et morphologiques et sont issues de productions dont l’organisation présente de très fortes analogies. Dans le même temps, leur modalité de distribution et leur valorisation dans les sites récepteurs varient profondément. International audience; While obsidian sourcing has long represented a powerful means of reconstructing past socio-economic interaction, the use of destructive techniques restricted most studies to analysing only a few artefacts per site. Non-destructive methods allow the characterization of much more material, thus providing more robust data upon which to base our archaeological interpretations. Here we report on one such study using EDXRF and SEM-EDS to analyse assemblages from Tell Aswad and Qdeir 1, two Syrian Neolithic sites. The study demonstrates for the first time that SEM-EDS can play an important role in discriminating Bingöl A and Nemrut Dağ sources, while the rapidity of EDXRF permits the analysis of a more statistically valid number of artefacts, providing a better impression of the assemblage. It enabled us to chart diachronic patterns in raw material procurement at Tell Aswad and detailed raw materials not recorded in a previous smaller-scale analysis of obsidian from Qdeir 1.; Alors que les études de provenance de l’obsidienne ont longtemps représenté un moyen efficace de reconstruire les interactions socio-économiques du passé, l’utilisation de méthodes destructives a restreint la plupart de ces études à l’analyse de seulement quelques artefacts par site. Les méthodes non destructives permettent de caractériser plus de matériel, nous prodiguant ainsi des données plus « solides » sur lesquelles fonder nos interprétations. Nous présentons ici ce type d’étude, utilisant l’EDXRF le MEB-EDS pour analyser deux assemblages provenant de Tell Aswad et Qdeir 1, deux sites néolithiques syriens. Cette étude démontre deux points principaux. Premièrement, nous prouvons, pour la première fois, que le MEB-EDS peut jouer un rôle important dans la discrimination des sources de Bingöl A et Nemrut Dağ, deux des plus importantes sources du Proche-Orient durant la Préhistoire, tandis que la rapidité de l’EDXRF a permis l’analyse d’un nombre statistiquement plus représentatif d’artefacts, nous apportant une meilleure vue d’ensemble de la série lithique en question. Cela nous a permis de noter des tendances diachroniques dans l’approvisionnement en matière première du site et de remarquer des matières premières non relevées lors de précédentes études de moins grande envergure sur l’obsidienne de Qdeir 1.

In the Near East “ sickles” or “ glossy pieces” occur for the first time during the Natufian period. These tools are either “ sickle blades” or “ sickle elements”. “ Sickle blades” are used hafted or hand-held as single cutting tools. “ Sickle elements” are inserted in a haft in order to create a composite instrument. When sickles are made from flint, they are easily recognized since they usually bear a macroscopic gloss that covers a wide area on both sides of the tool. Experimental and microscopic studies have shown that the majority of these tools were used as sickles to harvest cereals or, less frequently, soft siliceous plants such as reeds and typha. Macroscopic glosses of different natures develop on various occasions, for example : on elements mounted on threshing sledges ; when limestone is worked with the addition of water ; when humid clay is scraped ; etc. When sickle elements are made from obsidian, no macroscopic gloss develops and use wear is rarely observed with the naked eye. In this case, the worn area on the tool presents a mat aspect and abrasion features. Such tools are rarely recognized as such. Sometimes, abrasion features are erroneously interpreted as harvesting marks. The frequency of harvesting instruments increased during the Neolithic period. According to several analysts, the use of sickles to harvest cereals was preferred to other harvesting techniques such as uprooting, the use of beaters and baskets, and mesoarias in order to maximize yields. Moreover, the evolution of the morphology of sickles has often been related to the gradual adoption and the spread of agriculture. Sickles found on archaeological sites may be complete or broken. The hafts were made from wood, antler, or horn and the sickle elements were inserted parallel or oblique to the haft and often glued with bitumen. If only sickle elements are discovered on the site, the distribution of the gloss and the bitumen and the size of the blanks provide information on the mode of hafting, the degree of curvature of the haft, and, in some cases, the number of lithic inserts. The aim of the present paper is to examine the relation between the morphology and efficiency of the sickles and the adoption of agriculture by the Neolithic communities in the Near East. Based on publications, we identify three major steps in the evolution of sickle manufacturing in this region : the appearance of composite sickles, increased curvature of the hafts, and the adoption of oblique inserts. An experimental programme was devised in order to evaluate the impact of the following factors on sickle productivity : the harvester ; the curvature of the haft ; the length of the cutting edge of the lithic blade ; the position of the blade in relation to the haft (parallel or oblique) ; the raw material used (flint or obsidian). Statistical analysis of the results allows the impact of each factor and of combinations of factors to be evaluated. Our research has shown that the harvester parameter is important. The knowledge, skill, and physical strength of the harvester as well as his/ her adaptation to the use of different tools and to different working conditions influence productivity. These factors affect the movement executed by the harvester, the distribution of use wear on the tool, and the degree of damage on the cutting edge. Our results also stress the impact of the lithic tool’s raw material on sickle efficiency. As a result of its mechanical properties, flint is better adapted to harvesting than obsidian. In particular, flint is less brittle and less prone to abrasion than obsidian. We examine the distinct behaviour of the two raw materials, when they are subject to similar constraints, through macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the damage on the experimental tools. Considering the interaction between the morphology of the haft and the position of the inserts, our data confirm that the use of a curved haft with obliquely set inserts increases the cutting capacity of the sickle. The curvature of the haft and the length of the cutting edge determine the number of strokes needed to harvest a given field area. When archaeological data are examined, published information on sickle morphology concerns mainly the Natufian in the southern Levant and the PPNA and PPNB in northern Syria. The scarcity of obsidian sickle elements can be related to the difficulty of identifying characteristic use wear but also to the choice of flint for its mechanical properties and the uneven geographical distribution of obsidian. Large quantities of obsidian sickle blades are found in archaeological sites located near obsidian sources, for example, A ¸ sıklı Höyük in Cappadocia, Turkey. Three stages are identified in the evolution of Near Eastern sickles between 12000 and 7000 B. C. During the Natufian period, the adoption of composite instruments had an influence on the efficiency of the sickles. During the PPNB, the gradual increase of haft curvature probably played a role in the harvester’s tempo and movements. In the latest phase of the PPNB, the practice of agriculture was widespread and composite sickles with a curved haft and oblique inserts are common. We argue that this choice can be partly explained by the need for sickle efficiency. Changes in the system of lithic production and the organization of agricultural activities during the same period also influence the adoption of oblique inserts. Moreover, comparisons between the evolution of sickles in different geographical areas, northern Syria and Cyprus, indicate that technical traditions, technical transfer and societal context were more critical in the choice of sickle morphology., Les faucilles apparaissent au Proche-Orient dès le Natoufien et deviennent de plus en plus fréquentes au Néolithique. On les retrouve sur les sites sous forme de «lame-faucille » ou d’ «éléments de faucille » armant les manches pour former des outils composites. Plus exceptionnellement, des faucilles composites plus ou moins fragmentaires sont préservées. Certains auteurs considèrent que l’évolution morphologique de ces instruments composites traduit une recherche d’efficacité qui ne cesse de s’intensifier depuis l’adoption de l’agriculture jusqu’à sa généralisation. En reprenant la littérature, nous avons identifié trois étapes majeures dans l’évolution de la fabrication des faucilles au Proche-Orient avec l’apparition successive des instruments composites, des manches courbes, puis de la faucille courbe à insertion en épi. Les expérimentations manuelles de moisson de céréales ont été mises en place pour évaluer l’influence des paramètres suivants : la courbure plus ou moins marquée du manche, la longueur de tranchant, la position des inserts (emmanchement parallèle ou oblique), et, enfin, la matière première de l’outil (silex ou obsidienne) et le facteur humain. Le traitement statistique des résultats nous permet d’évaluer l’influence de chacun de ces paramètres ainsi que des associations de paramètres. Le facteur humain reste un paramètre essentiel. Nous avons ensuite pu montrer que le silex avait des qualités de coupe plus importantes que l’obsidienne pour ce type d’activité et l’analyse microscopique des usures nous a permis de déterminer quels étaient les comportements différenciés de ces deux matériaux. Il apparaît ensuite que l’interaction entre la courbure du manche et le mode d’insertion des éléments influencent le rendement de coupe : l’association entre un manche courbe et des insertions en épi est plus favorable. La courbure du manche et la longueur de tranchant ont enfin une influence sur le nombre de coups de faucille nécessaire pour moissonner un champ d’une superficie donnée. Si nous considérons la région pour laquelle nous avons le plus de données, la Syrie du Nord, les résultats montrent que la rareté des éléments de faucille en obsidienne pourrait être au moins en partie liée aux caractéristiques propres du matériau. Il est pourtant des sites à immédiate proximité des zones d’approvisionnement en obsidienne où les éléments de faucille en obsidienne sont pléthores (exemple cappadocien d’A ¸ sıklı Höyük). Pour la Syrie du Nord, encore, on observe au moment de la généralisation de l’agriculture une préférence plus que marquée pour les faucilles à manche courbe et inserts obliques. Pourtant, la recherche d’efficacité ne semble pas le facteur déterminant pour expliquer cette préférence. The study of the phenomenon "obsidian" has long made possible to address the interactions between geographically and culturally distant groups. The accumulations of data concerning the prehistoric obsidian in the Middle East and Transcaucasia, as well as the development of new techniques for physicochemical characterization have created a considerable and very diverse amount of information. Obsidatabase is a project for collecting and consulting geological, geochemical and archaeological data related to prehistoric obsidian in this region, facilitating access and sharing of information, and their export to Geographic Information Systems., L'étude du " phénomène obsidienne " a depuis longtemps permis d'aborder les interactions entre groupes géographiquement et culturellement distants. L'accumulation des données concernant l'obsidienne préhistorique au Proche-Orient et en Transcaucasie et le développement de nouvelles techniques de caractérisation physico-chimiques ont permis la création d'une quantité considérable d'informations de natures diverses. Obsidatabase est un projet permettant la collecte et consultation de données géologiques, géochimiques et archéologiques liées à l'obsidienne préhistorique dans cette région, facilitant l'accès et le partage des informations, ainsi que leur exportation vers des Systèmes d'Information Géographique.

Physico-chemistry of cultural heritage materials can bring informations about human activities through their selection, transport, transformation and their surrender. Moreover the conservation of cultural heritage needs the understanding of alteration mechanisms in order to control and prevent degradation processes. This manuscript presents the research activities developed around physico-chemistry of ancient materials since my PhD, a period during which the tackled questions were diversified. Now researches are organised around three directions: “archaeometry”, with the provenance studies and the history of techniques; “conservation”, with the diagnostic and the study of degradations; and “analogues”, with the long term alteration mechanisms. Analytical approaches implemented were diversified, from elementary analyses to structural characterisation using vibrational spectroscopies (Raman and infrared). After the presentation of my teaching and training activities, three chapters present the tackled research subjects. The first part: “Physico-chemistry of a natural glass: obsidian, a marker of exchange networks”, present the works performed on obsidian provenance studies using their elementary composition, and then their structural properties. The second part: “Corrosion products of ferrous metals: from structural characterisation of analogues to alteration mechanisms and its prevention”, describe the methodologies introduced using Raman spectroscopy to characterise corrosion products. The deduced informations should contribute to the description of mechanisms and provide diagnosis indicators for conservation and restoration. The last part: “Projects under development: natural organic substances from cultural heritage artefacts” present the first results obtained on this recently opened research field. The aim is to contribute to the recognition of substances used, either raw or transformed, or used in varnishes, these for taking part in problematics around material circulation, history of techniques or conservation purpose., L'étude de la physico-chimie des matériaux du patrimoine culturel peut nous renseigner sur les activités humaines dans lesquelles les objets anciens ont été impliqués, depuis leur sélection, leur transport, leurs transformations, leurs usages et jusqu'à leur abandon. De plus la préservation de cet héritage culturel nécessite la compréhension des mécanismes l'altération afin de contrôler et prévenir les processus de dégradation. Ce manuscrit présente les activités de recherches développées autour de la physico-chimie des matériaux anciens réalisées depuis mon doctorat, période au cours de laquelle les questions abordées se sont diversifiées. Les travaux s'articulent actuellement autour de trois axes : “archéométrie”, avec les études de provenance et l'histoire des techniques ; “conservation”, avec l'étude et le diagnostic des dégradations ; enfin “analogues”, avec les mécanismes d'altérations à long terme. Les approches analytiques mises en œuvre se sont élargies, partant des analyses élémentaires pour aborder puis développer les caractérisations structurales à l'aide des spectroscopies vibrationnelles (Raman et infrarouge). Après une présentation de mes activités d'enseignement et d'encadrement, trois chapitres retracent les sujets de recherche abordés. La première partie : “Physico-chimie d'un verre naturel : l'obsidienne, un marqueur des réseaux d'échange”, présente les travaux effectués sur les études de provenance de l'obsidienne avec des approches fondées sur leurs compositions élémentaires puis leurs propriétés structurales. La seconde : “Produits de corrosion des métaux ferreux : de la caractérisation structurale des analogues aux mécanismes et à la prévision de l'altération”, expose les méthodologies introduites avec la spectroscopie Raman pour caractériser les produits de corrosion. Les informations fournies sont destinées à faire évoluer les mécanismes envisagés et proposer des éléments de diagnostic pour la conservation et la restauration. La dernière partie : “Projets en développement : les substances naturelles organiques issues d'objets du patrimoine” présente les premiers résultats obtenus sur un axe de recherche récemment ouvert. Il s'agit de contribuer à une reconnaissance des produits utilisés, soit bruts, soit transformés, soit mis en œuvre dans des vernis, pour des problématiques de circulation des matières premières, d'histoire des techniques ou de conservation.

International audience; Excavation of Malia Palace (Crete) had delivered a large collection of obsidian artefacts from Ancient Minoan II to Middle Minoan II levels. Among these artefacts, some present visual macroscopic characteristics distinct from Aegean raw materials from Melos and Gyali islands. To determine the provenance of these obsidians, non-destructive analysis by particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) were realised from a sampling of 31 artefacts. As suspected, the sources recognised are mainly Aegean, with the larger part (25 artefacts) identifiable to Melos sources (Sta Nychia: 21; Demenegaki: 4) and one piece to the Gyali island. The originality lies in the identification at Malia for the Ancient Minoan II levels of five artefacts attributed to Cappadocian sources, with four pieces coming from the Göllü Dağ volcanic complex and for the first time in the Aegean area, of one obsidian artefact ascribed to the Nenezi Dağ volcano.; Les fouilles archéologiques du palais de Malia ont livré une importante collection d’obsidiennes taillées dans les niveaux Minoen Ancien II à Minoen Moyen II. Quelques-unes de ces pièces se distinguent par leur apparence visuelle, des obsidiennes issues des sources égéennes de Mélos et Gyali. Afin de déterminer précisément la provenance de ces matériaux, des analyses non destructives par particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) ont été réalisées sur une sélection de 31 pièces. Comme pressenti, les sources sont surtout égéennes pour la grande majorité des pièces (25) attribuée aux sources de Mélos (Sta Nychia : 21 ; Demenegaki : 4) et une pièce qui correspond à l’île de Gyali. L’originalité réside dans l’identification au Minoen Ancien II de Malia de cinq artefacts en provenance de Cappadoce, avec quatre échantillons du Göllü Dağ et pour la première fois dans le domaine égéen, d’une obsidienne du volcan Nenezi Dağ.

International audience; Provenance studies of Corsican siliceous raw materials used during, the Neolithic focused mainly on obsidian. They showed an almost systematic use of Monte Arci sources (Sardinia). Chert studies have long been dodged, whereas the multiplicity of potential origins, in Sardinia and in continental areas, may provide complementary spatial information about diffusion patterns and interaction phenomenon in the Middle Tyrrhenian during the Neolithic. We studied obsidian and chert industries of three Corsican sites: Renaghju (Early Neolithic), Monte Revincu and Vasculacciu (both Middle Neolithic). In order to assign a provenance, 2241 chert archaeological samples were characterized by petrographic approaches and 100 obsidian artefacts were submitted to geochemical analyses. Each site provides a specific trend regarding relative abundances of raw materials, provenance and consumption patterns. Considered in the wider perspective of the Neolithic Corsican context, results reveal procurement variations from a chronological as well as a geographical point of view. Those variations may echo economic and social evolutions undergone in Neolithic societies of the Tyrrhenian area.; Les études de provenance des matériaux siliceux employés en Corse au Néolithique se sont principalement focalisées sur l’obsidienne, montrant quasi systématiquement une utilisation des sources du Monte Arci (Sardaigne). Cependant, l’identification de l’origine du silex, compte tenu de la diversité des sources potentielles distribuées en Sardaigne et sur le continent, peut apporter des informations spatiales complémentaires sur les phénomènes de circulation et de diffusion. L’origine de ces matériaux lithiques importés en Corse a été déterminée par des approches pétrographiques (2241 échantillons de silex) et géochimiques (100 échantillons d’obsidienne), pour trois sites en cours d’étude : Renaghju (Corse-du-Sud), daté du Néolithique ancien, Vasculacciu (Corse-du-Sud) et Monte Revincu (Haute-Corse), datés du Néolithique moyen. Mis en perspective avec d’autres analyses disponibles par ailleurs, les résultats révèlent sur un plan chronologique (Néolithique ancien et moyen) et géographique (Nord et Sud) des variations d’approvisionnements en terme de nature et d’origine des matériaux. Ces variations reflètent les évolutions économiques et sociales rythmant les premières sociétés néolithiques de l’aire tyrrhénienne.
