Ground states and low-energy excited states of phenyl and methyl substituted allenes are studied by means of photoelectron spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy and CNDO/S-calculations. The conjugative and inductive effects of the phenyl and methyl substituents on the charge distribution of the allenic moiety, and conformational effects (isomerization energies, angle of twist) are discussed on the basis of experimental and calculated properties. A UV band assignment for phenylallenes is achieved using correlations with excited states of benzene and phenylacetylene and CNDO/S-calculations. The sequence of excited states of phenylallene, resulting from ππ* transitions corresponds to 1B2u < 1B1u < 1E2g(a) < 1E1u(a) < 1E1u(b) in benzene. A tentative assignment for the excited states of allene and its methyl substituted derivatives is given. The proposed sequence of excited states of allene concerning the 2e 3e transition is 1A2 < 1B2 < 1A1 < 1B2, in agreement with CNDO/S-calculations. Eigenschaften des Grundzustandes und energiearmer angeregter Singulett-Zustande von phenyl- und methylsubstituierten Allenen werden mit Hilfe der Photoelektronen-Spektroskopie, Absorptions-Spektroskopie und von CNDO/S-Modellrechnungen untersucht. Konjugative und induktive Effekte der Phenyl- und Methylsubstituenten auf die Ladungsverteilung sowie Konformationseffekte (Isomerisierungsenergien, Verdrillungswinkel) werden auf der Grundlage experimenteller und berechneter Eigenschaften diskutiert. Die UV-Banden der Phenylallene lassen sich durch korrelation mit angeregten Zustanden des Benzols und Phenylacetylens sowie mit CNDO/S-Rechnungen zuordnen. Relativ zu Benzol ergibt sich die Sequenz angeregter Zustande des Phenylallens, die durch ππ*-ubergange entstehen, zu: 1B2u < 1B1u < 1E2g(a) < 1E1u(a) < 1H1u(b). Auf der Basis verfugbarer Daten wird ferner eine Zuordnung der angeregten Zustande von Allen und seiner methylsubstituierten Derivate vorgeschlagen, die durch CNDO/S-Rechnungen bestatigt wird. Fur die 2e 3e-ubergangen entsprechenden Anregungszustande resultiert demnach die Folge 1A2 < 1B1 < 1A1 < 1B2.

From high-resolution 13C-NMR spectra direct and long-range (up to four-bond) carbon-proton coupling constants of allenes have been obtained. Relative signs of the coupling constants have been determined relating them to the (absolute) signs of couplings in selected model compounds. The substituent effects on the coupling constants are discussed in terms of empirical correlations with other molecular properties of allenes or usual substituent increments, and on the basis of the independent-electron MO treatment of the Fermi contact term using CNDO/S wave functions. Spin density information via π-type conjugation plays an important role for many kinds of carbon-proton couplings in allenes. Aus hochaufgelosten 13C-NMR-Spektren haben sich 13CH-Kopplungskonstanten in Allenen von direkt gebundenen Atomen und longrange-Kopplungskonstanten (von Atomen, die bis zu vier Bindungen getrennt sind) bestimmen lassen. Die relativen Vorzeichen der Kopplungskonstanten sind durch Vergleich mit den (absoluten) Vorzeichen der Kopplungskonstanten bestimmter Modellsubstanzen ermittelt worden. Die Substituenteneffekte auf die Kopplungen werden aufgrund empirischer Korrelationen mit anderen Molekuleigenschaften von Allenen oder ublichen Substituenteninkrementen diskutiert und auch unter Verwendung von CNDO/S-Wellenfunktionen auf der Grundlage der MO-theoretischen Behandlung des Fermischen Kontaktwechselwirkungsterms. Spindichteinformation uber eine π-artige Konjugation spielt eine wesentliche Rolle fur viele 13CH-Kopplungen der Allene.

The electronic structure of monosubstituted allenes has been investigated by means of photoelectron and UV absorption spectroscopy.—The assignment of the photoelectron and UV absorption bands is achieved on the basis of a “composite molecule” (LCMO) model and substantiated by comparisons with structurally related molecules.—Assuming the validity of Koopmans' approximation for the interpretation of photoelectron spectra the π electronic structure of allenes can be rationalized quantitatively in terms of a three-parameter model of substituent effects which involves short-range and long-range inductive effects and resonance effects.—The substituent effect on the highest-occupied σ orbital of allenes is shown to be essentially an electrostatic (long-range) field effect. The interpretation of low-energy 1A” excited states of allenes is achieved via a correlation of UV spectroscopic and photoelectron spectroscopic data.—The interpretation of experimental results is corroborated and refined by semiempirical (CNDO/S) and ab initio (STO-3G and STO-4.31G) calculations.—In general, there are analogies of the molecular properties of allenes with those of ethylenes and benzenederivatives and with those of carbonylcompounds and acetylenes. Mit Hilfe der Photoelektronen- und UV-Absorptionsspektroskopie wird die Elektronenstruktur monosubstituierter Allene untersucht.—Eine Zuordnung der Photoelektronen- und UV-Absorptionsbanden erfolgt auf der Basis eines I.CMO-Modells sowie durch Vergleiche mit strukturell ahnlichen Molekulen.—Unter der Voraussetzung der Gultigkeit von Koopmans' Naherung fur die Interpretation der Photoelektronenspektren lassen sich die Substituenteneinflusse auf die π-Elektronenstruktur der Allene quantitativ durch ein Drei-Parameter-Modell beschreiben. Dabei werden induktive short-range und long-range-Effekte sowie Resonanzeffekte unterschieden. Der Substituenteneffekt auf das hochste besetzte σ-Orbital der Allene ist weitgehend ein elektrostatischer (long-range)-Feldeffekt. Die energiearmen Anregungszustande der Symmetrie 1A” bei den Allenen konnen uber eine Korrelation von UV-Absorptions- und Photoelektronenbandenverschiebungen interpretiert werden.—Die experimentellen Befunde werden durch semiempirische (CNDO/S) und ab initio (STO-3G und STO-4.31G)-Rechnungen abgesichert und im Detail erweitert.—Ganz allgemein lassen die Molekuleigenschaften der Allene Analogien zu Athylenen und Benzolderivaten sowie zu Carbonylverbindungen und Acetylenen erkennen.

On the basis of calculated CNDO/S electron densities. STO-3G gross atomic populations, and dipole moments the electron density distributions in variously substituted allenes are investigated.—The structure of the π system in monosubstituted allenes and the influences of the substituents are discussed in terms of conjugation, hyperconjugation. and polarization effects.—For the predictions of total electron densities of CNDO/S quality for the carbon and the hydrogen atoms of the allenic skeleton a simple procedure is proposed. Auf der Grundlage von berechneten CNDO/S-Elektronendichten. STO-3G-Atompopulationen und Dipolmomenten werden die Elektronendichteverteilungen substituierter Allene untersucht.—Die Struktur des π-Systems monosubstituierter Allene und die Substituenteneinflusse werden uber Konjugations-, Hyperkonjugations- und Polarisationseffekte diskutiert.—Fur die Vorhersage von Gesamtelektronendichten der Kohlen- und Wasserstoffatome des Allengerustes, die qualitatsmasig denen der CNDO/S-Rechnungen entsprechen, wird ein einfaches Verfahren vorgeschlagen.
