Abstract

This study presents the results of the long-term monitoring of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations using a low-cost particle sensor installed in a suburban environment in the Canary Islands. A laser-scattering Nova Fitness SDS011 sensor was operated continuously for approximately three and a half years, which is longer than most other studies using this type of sensor. The impact of African dust outbreaks on the aerosol concentrations was assessed, showing a significant increase in both PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations during the outbreaks. Additionally, a good correlation was found with a nearby reference instrument of the air quality network of the Canary Islands' government. The correlation between the PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations, the effect of relative humidity, and the stability of the sensor were also investigated. This study highlights the potential of this kind of sensor for long-term air quality monitoring with a view to developing extensive and dense low-cost air quality networks that are complementary to official air quality networks. Abstract

More than 2 years of columnar atmospheric aerosol measurements (2006–2009) at the Tamanrasset site (22.79° N, 5.53° E, 1377 m a.s.l.), in the heart of the Sahara, are analysed. Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) level 2.0 data were used. The KCICLO (K is the name of a constant and ciclo means cycle in Spanish) method was applied to a part of the level 1.5 data series to improve the quality of the results. The annual variability of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Ångström exponent (AE) has been found to be strongly linked to the convective boundary layer (CBL) thermodynamic features. The dry-cool season (autumn and winter) is characterized by a shallow CBL and very low mean turbidity (AOD ~ 0.09 at 440 nm, AE ~ 0.62). The wet-hot season (spring and summer) is dominated by high turbidity of coarse dust particles (AE ~ 0.28, AOD ~ 0.39 at 440 nm) and a deep CBL. The aerosol-type characterization shows desert mineral dust as the prevailing aerosol. Both pure Saharan dust and very clear sky conditions are observed depending on the season. However, several case studies indicate an anthropogenic fine mode contribution from the industrial areas in Libya and Algeria. The concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) source apportionment method was used to identify potential sources of air masses arriving at Tamanrasset at several heights for each season. Microphysical and optical properties and precipitable water vapour were also investigated. Abstract

El polvo mineral atmosférico desempeña un papel muy importante en la atmósfera por su interacción con el balance radiativo y con la microfísica de nubes. África Septentrional es la mayor fuente de polvo mineral en el mundo. Sin embargo, carece de sistemas de observación desde tierra adecuados y la información desde satélite es muy limitada debido a la alta reflectividad del suelo. Por ello, se valora la posibilidad de usar la visibilidad horizontal observada en las estaciones meteorológicas como una forma indirecta de estimar el contenido de polvo en la atmósfera al nivel de la superficie. En este trabajo se utilizan observaciones de visibilidad para analizar la distribución geográfica de polvo mineral en África Septentrional y Oriente Medio, así como su variabilidad estacional. Posteriormente, se estudia la relación entre visibilidad y la concentración de partículas y se halla una relación empírica entre ambas magnitudes que es comparada con otras relaciones similares deducidas por otros autores.
