SOCIAL interaction , *MEETINGS , *WORK environment , *TURN-taking (Communication) , *LECTURERS - Abstract
As multiparty interactions with single courses of coordinated action, workplace meetings place particular interactional demands on participants who are not primary speakers (e.g. not chairs) as they work to initiate turns and to interactively coordinate with displays of recipiency from co-participants. Drawing from a corpus of 26 hours of videotaped workplace meetings in a midsized US city, this article reports on multimodal practices – phonetic, prosodic, and bodily-visual – used for coordinating turn transition and for consolidating recipiency in these specialized speech exchange systems. Practices used by self-selecting non-primary speakers as they secure turns in meetings include displays of close monitoring of current speakers’ emerging turn structure, displays of heightened interest as current turns approach possible completion, and turn initiation practices designed to pursue and, in a fine-tuned manner, coordinate with displays of recipiency on the parts of other participants as well as from reflexively constructed ‘target’ recipients. By attending to bodily-visual action, as well as phonetics and prosody, this study contributes to expanding accounts for turn taking beyond traditional word-based grammar (i.e. lexicon and syntax). The article investigates a multimodal practice for self-selecting observed in a video-taped corpus of work meetings: the use of pointing gestures predicting possible turn completions and projecting the emergence of possible next speakers. This practice is analyzed in various sequential positions, namely at turn beginnings and at pre-beginnings. It displays recipients' practical online turn parsing, and their orientation to transition spaces, and to TCU. completions in a visible, recognizable, public way. It shows the emergent and progressive establishment of speakership, exploiting both systematic features of turn-taking and specific features of the interactional space. The article explores the emic, locally situated and contingent definition of speakership by considering not only where pointing gestures begin but also where they end: pointing does not only end in pre-completion positions, projecting turn end, but can also persist through sequences, showing speaker's orientations to her turn's sequential implicativeness. Thus, by observing a particular multimodal practice within a specific interactional setting, the article explores participants' orientations to the rights and obligations associated with talk-related categories such as 'non current speaker'. 'possible next speaker', 'incipient speaker' and 'current speaker'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AUTOMATIC tracking ,LECTURERS ,MEETINGS ,GRAPHICAL modeling (Statistics) ,ACOUSTIC localization ,MONTE Carlo method - Abstract
Tracking speakers in multiparty conversations constitutes a fundamental task for automatic meeting analysis. In this paper, we present a novel probabilistic approach to jointly track the location and speaking activity of multiple speakers in a multisensor meeting room, equipped with a small microphone array and multiple uncalibrated cameras. Our framework is based on a mixed-state dynamic graphical model defined on a multiperson state-space, which includes the explicit definition of a proximity-based interaction model. The model integrates audiovisual (AV) data through a novel observation model. Audio observations are derived from a source localization algorithm. Visual observations are based on models of the shape and spatial structure of human heads. Approximate inference in our model, needed given its complexity, is performed with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo particle filter (MCMC-PF), which results in high sampling efficiency. We present results--based on an objective evaluation procedure--that show that our framework 1) is capable of locating and tracking the position and speaking activity of multiple meeting participants engaged in real conversations with good accuracy, 2) can deal with eases of visual clutter and occlusion, and 3) significantly outperforms a traditional sampling-based approach. In an analysis of the use of what I call 'generalized theme-oriented' opinions and 'agent-oriented' opinions in three videotaped Japanese business meetings, I demonstrate how the speakers in positions of authority used (1) generalized theme-oriented opinions to support their agent-oriented opinions, or vice versa, and (2) used generalized theme-oriented opinions and agent-oriented opinions to set the course of their talk and develop the talk to their advantage. Japanese speakers in business meetings may use generalized theme-oriented opinions when they strengthen their arguments in a strategy to persuade their addressee and maximize the outcome of the discussion to their benefit. The article presents information about the Southwestern Social Science Association. The 1952 annual convention of the association was held at Dallas, Texas, April 10-12, 1952. The Executive Council met at 7:30 p.m. on April 10, 1952, at the Baker Hotel. All members were present except Wade Hartrick, Ralph Russell, C. A. Wiley, Ellis Sowell, John Stockton, and Walter Hansen. The Council voted to recommend to the incoming Executive Council that the Association meets at the Baker Hotel in 1953 and that invitations be entertained from other cities for 1954. Dr. W. M. Pritchett, chairman of the Endowment Committee, led a discussion on the trust agreement for the proposed Southwestern Social Science Association Foundation. The Executive Council voted to recommend to the general business meeting that the proposed foundation be formed as early as possible. It was agreed that Dr. Sowell should suggest a list of nominees for consideration as trustees. The matter of honoraria payments to Convention speakers was discussed. The consensus of the group was to the effect that the Association's financial status does not permit payments to section speakers.

The article gives information on conference on "Refractory Amsterdam." The Netherlands Sociological Society convened the conference to discuss the origins of the conflicts that have taken place in recent years: especially of the Provos, a word derived from the provocateur. A speaker observed a consensus of opinion between the two groups: both believe there are `good' and `bad' Provos. The result is that its advocates defend the cause --the good ideas--while its adversaries condemn the individuals taking part in it. This means that the Provo leader and the normal adherent each inhabit different worlds of experience. Another pointed to yet another aspect of Provo activity: Those models which up to now have been extrapolated from the traditional youth work are now outdated. The Provos and other `minority movements' are attempts to develop new models for the consumer society. The following speaker cast a number of wide-mesh nets over the phenomenon in the hope that it could be captured in this way. He explained why he had withdrawn from the preparatory committee. He considered that there was too little substantial knowledge of facts for sociologists to analyze.

MEETINGS ,ANNUAL meetings ,LECTURERS ,MANAGEMENT committees - Abstract
This article presents information on the next annual meeting of the American Sociological Society. The next Annual Meeting will convene at Atlantic City, New Jersey during December 28-31, in co-operation with the other Social Sciences. Responsibility for naming participants rests with the chairmen of the Divisions and Sections in co-operation with the President. The Committee on Social Research sends to each chairman a list of research in progress as gathered in the annual census. While this is the chief source of program material, yet suggestions and advice on subjects or speakers will be welcomed, in the interest of a strong program. The executive committee has authorized the appointment of a Membership Committee, whose important function it is to strengthen the society by enlarging membership and the chairman has been chosen. Attention is called to the rule against two papers being read by any one member. Chairmen should make this clear in issuing invitations and members are supposed to decline to appear twice, though this should not necessarily apply to invitations to participate in the discussions which follow the reading of formal papers.

The article presents information on the meeting of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) tax division which took place from May 2-4, 1984, in Washington D.C. The meeting was the first for the division under a voluntary plan of membership. The formal call for all AICPA members to participate in the tax division was in the mail less than a week before the meeting, according to Albert B. Ellentuck, chairman of the AICPA taxation executive committee. Fifty new members were in attendance and there is a potential for more than 8,000 new division members, Ellentuck said. Even though held at a time when the nation was on the threshold of major tax legislation, the meeting drew an array of speakers from the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, as well as representatives of the accounting profession. LECTURERS , *MEETINGS - Abstract
The article presents a list of the lecturers of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for 1972, the twelfth year of the ACM Lectureship Program. The primary purpose of the program is to provide speakers for chapter meetings. The number of lecturers this year is considerably greater than in preceding years, to better service the increasing number of chapters and to be able to respond to the increasing number of multiple requests. Acceptance of the invitation to serve as an ACM Lecturer involves a substantial commitment of time and preparation effort. Some of the names in the list include, Eduard N. Adams, Michael T. Alexander, Sherwood E. Anderson, Francis Joseph Balint, Frank W. Banghart, David H. Brandin, Morven W. Gentleman, John A. Gosden, Grace Murray Hopper, Kenneth W. Kolence, Herbert R.J. Grosch, Michael A, Melkanoff, Donald R. Morrison, C.V. Ramamoorthy, Arnold L. Rosenberg, Ashford W. Stalnakor, Theodor D. Sterling, Robert N. Reinstedt, William Jack Worlton and Kendall R. Wright.

MEETINGS ,UNIVERSITIES & colleges ,LECTURERS ,MEMBERSHIP - Abstract
This article focuses on the reform meeting in Hyde Park in London. One of the speaker at the meeting was Mr. Walpole who is member of Cambridge University, and is the very ideal of what a university member should be; that is to say, he is an absolute in carnation of respectability, a model of deportment, and a man of naturally commanding presence. He spoke with such solemnity, and at the same time with such vagueness, that only three points seemed to be clear; first, that the Government apprehended considerable danger; secondly, that they meant to do something very awful; and, thirdly, that they did not quite know what the awful thing was to be.
