According to the authors of the chapter, Scientific Student Society is an important initial stage of professional growth of a future pediatrician.

The article describes the history of the creation of the Department of Family Medicine of the NWSMU named after I.I. Mechnikov, notes the role of international projects in its establishment and development of the main areas of activity. Examples of successful long-term cooperation are given, in particular, with the University of Iowa (USA). The main stages of the formation of teaching the specialty General Practice (Family Medicine) within the framework of professional retraining of primary health care doctors and residency are described. The importance of using various interactive technologies in the learning process is emphasized, including the development of skills in simulation conditions, which were introduced at the department long before their use in the process of accreditation of specialists. The features of teaching the discipline Polyclinic Therapy for the 6th year students of the medical faculty, as well as the experience of leading scientific research that was carried out by participants of the student scientific society are noted. The main directions of scientific research carried out at the department in recent years are described, aimed at a comprehensive study of the features of the management of elderly patients in general medical practice and the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in St. Petersburg and Arkhangelsk. The role of international cooperation in the implementation of large-scale scientific projects, in particular with the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), is emphasized. The perspectives for the development of the Department of Family Medicine in the near future are outlined.

Background The article reviews the history of the study, development and application of the method of transosseous osteosynthesis in the Middle Urals. G.A. Ilizarov first presented his device and the results of its use in fracture repair at a meeting of the Trauma and Orthopedic Scientific Society in Sverdlovsk in December 1952. The report was met with great interest. Prof. F.R. Bogdanov invited him to conduct research on bone regeneration during compression osteosynthesis at the Ural Research Institute for Trauma and Orthopaedics. The work initiated by G.A. Ilizarov and V.I. Stetsula gave rise to a large and longterm research on transosseous osteosynthesis at the Institute. The study focused on regeneration of bone, muscles, blood vessels and nerves, development and justification of compression-distraction osteosynthesis in fractures, limb shortening, nonunions, bone deformities, severe injuries to the pelvis, spine and spinal cord. Basic research was conducted to explore the role of the blood system and immune reactions involved in bone formation during limb lengthening. Material and methods Databases of scientific works and technical solutions registered with authorship certificates and patents of the USSR and the Russian Federation by fellow workers of the VOSKHITO, SNIITO, the Ural Research Institute for Trauma and Orthopaedics, the holdings of the Institute's scientific archive facility were used for the article. The search depth is 68 years. Results The Ural V.D. Chaklin Research Institute for Trauma and Orthopaedics has been studying and using the method of G.A. Ilizarov for many years and has made a significant contribution through theoretical rationale, development of new technologies of transosseous osteosynthesis, introduction and spread of the techniques over the vast territory of the Middle Urals and neighboring regions. Conclusion Despite the fact that in the recent years, transosseous osteosynthesis has to a certain extent been replaced in Russia by modern techniques with constructs of internal osteosynthesis, but there is no alternative to the method of G.A. Ilizarov in the treatment of gunshot wounds, open fractures, polytrauma, extensive bone defects, achondroplasia and many other disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Justification The participants of the round table on diagnosis and treatment of acid - and Helicobacter-dependent diseases, held on November 20, 2020 at the XXIII congress of the Scientific Society of Gastroenterologists of Russia within the framework of the XV National Congress of Therapists (Authors) having discussed the status of the issue, decided on the need to harmonize measures and pool efforts to reduce the incidence of H. pylori infection by approaching the medical community with this Memorandum.

Justification Given the large number of reports on the peculiarities of liver lesions during the Sars-Cov-2 infection [1], a team of experts who participated in the 23rd Congress of the Scientific Society of Gastroenterologists of Russia and 15 National Congress of Therapists of November 19, 2020 decided to make additions to the Russian Consensus of “Hyperammonemia in Adults” published early 2020 [2, 3].

The guidelines were approved by the XXIII Congress of the GSSR and the 22nd International Slavonic-Baltic Scientifi c Forum “St. Petersburg - Gastro-2020 ON-LINE” (St. Petersburg, June 11, 2020). The presented clinical practice guidelines of the Russian Scientific Medical Society of Internal Medicine (RSMSIM) and the Gastroenterological Scientific Society of Russia (GSSR), diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches for patients with digestive diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. The recommendations were approved at the XV National Congress of Internal Medicine, XXIII Congress of NOGR on the basis of the 1st edition, adopted at the 22nd International Slavic- Baltic Scientific Forum “St. Petersburg - Gastro-2020 ON-LINE”.

Although great advances have been made on large-scale manufacturing of vaccines and antiviral-based drugs, viruses persist as the major cause of human diseases nowadays. The recent pandemic of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) mounts a lot of stress on the healthcare sector and the scientific society to search continuously for novel components with antiviral possibility. Herein, we narrated the different tactics of using biopeptides as antiviral molecules that could be used as an interesting alternative to treat COVID-19 patients. The number of peptides with antiviral effects is still low, but such peptides already displayed huge potentials to become pharmaceutically obtainable as antiviral medications. Studies showed that animal venoms, mammals, plant, and artificial sources are the main sources of antiviral peptides, when bioinformatics tools are used. This review spotlights bioactive peptides with antiviral activities against human viruses, especially the coronaviruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) virus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2 or SARS-nCOV19). We also showed the data about well-recognized peptides that are still under investigations, while presenting the most potent ones that may become medications for clinical use.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW To clarify a lingering issue, the true incidence of repeated implantation failures (RIF) in women undergoing successive frozen euploid single embryo transfers (FE-SET). RECENT FINDINGS As not all Assisted reproductive techinique (ART) attempts are crowned by success, it has been questioned since incept of ART whether failures resulted from an embryonic or endometrial cause. RIF has received no precise definition but a trend has existed toward setting a more stringent definition, as reproductive biology has become more effective and ART success rates improved. No scientific society has yet convened on a universally accepted definition. The advent of effective and well tolerated pregestational testing of embryos for aneuploidy (PGT-A) has allowed to not transfer aneuploid embryos, which are bound not to succeed. This, therefore, justify revisiting the concept of RIF when only euploid embryos are transferred. Emerged from the German Association for Cannabis as Medicine (ACM), a handful of enthusiastic medical doctors from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria supported by experts from other countries established the International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM) in March 2000. During the past 20 years until today, it evolved toward the most important scientific society for clinical research in the field of cannabis-based medicines. The overarching aim of the IACM is to advance the knowledge on cannabis, cannabinoids, the endocannabinoid system, and related topics especially with regard to their therapeutic potential, which would allow more patients to profit from a treatment with cannabis-based medicines and ease legislators to adopt their policies. To reach this goal, the IACM organizes international scientific conferences, biweekly publishes the IACM-Bulletin—currently in six different languages—reaching more than 5000 people worldwide, and is working closely together with patient associations, international partner organizations, and IACM ambassadors. In 2019, a collaborative partnership with the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research was established.

Almost 10 years ago, clinicians at multiple locations all over Europe observed an increased number of antenatally undiagnosed cases of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) resulting in significant morbidity and the occasional maternal death. Even with an improvement in antenatal imaging, the management of severe PAS remains challenging. One solution to improve understanding in rare but potentially lethal conditions is international collaboration. Consequently, a European working group was formed, which over the next few years grew into an international society, the IS-PAS. The collective goals are to develop a large shared database of cases, generate high-quality research into all aspects of PAS, and improve education of both healthcare professionals and patients. The first results of this collaboration are presented within this supplement. Non

Argentina was able to anticipate public health interventions in order to flatten the contagion curve of CoViD-19. Eighty-three surgeons answered an online survey to assess the impact of the pandemic on bariatric surgery (BS) in Argentina. Most of them showed a high economic dependence on BS. Near 90% of health institutions were on phase 0 or I. While 90% still performed other laparoscopic surgeries, BS was suspended. In many surgeries for nonsuspected CoViD-19 patients, high personnel protection resources were applied. Ninety-five percent offered virtual consults. Most surgeons would not change usual algorithms or techniques. To restart BS a scientific society recommendation was expected, including patient selection criteria. The opinions gathered by this survey were taken into account to elaborate official recommendations for restarting elective BS.

Introduction: The size of penis can cause concern in patients, even if the organ is clinically normal. Additionally, the cost of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (iPDE5) and long waiting lists to access penile prosthesis placement can lead patients to resort to non-medical and potentially dangerous alternatives. One of these dangerous alternatives is the injection of building silicone at the level of the subcutis of the penis or the corpora cavernosa causing the formation of a granuloma that increases the girth and consistency of the penis. Case report: The article describes the case of a 43-year-old patient who self-injected aedile silicone at the level of his penis in an attempt to achieve greater penile size and greater rigidity. The patient reported that he could not economically afford the iPDE5.The persistence of severe pain in the penis forced the patient to go to a urological examination. The patient subsequently underwent the penile granuloma exeresis procedure and skin reconstruction with scrotal flap. Conclusion: The pursuit of sexual well-being can lead some patients to rely on unconventional and potentially harmful techniques. The role of the andrologist and of the scientific society should be to dissuade the patient from using these dangerous methods and to provide valid alternatives accessible to the patient. The economic difficulty in purchasing drugs that facilitate erection or the long waiting lists for the placement of penile prostheses can favor dangerous methods such as penile injection of silicon. There is therefore a clear need to facilitate access to drugs and surgical techniques that favor the patient’s sexual well-being.

The Scientific Societies of Primary Care, being the area in which there is a considerable prevalence of Arterial Hypertension (AHT), need to periodically evaluate the international guidelines for its management. This is particularly relevant when disparate guidelines make it difficult to make decisions in daily clinical practice. The present document has as its aim to analyse the changes and new developments proposed in the guidelines of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (ACC/AHA 2017), as well as in the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology and European Society of Hypertension (ESC/ESH 2018). An analysis will be made of any differences, limitations, and their applicability to Primary Care in Spain. Finally, the most relevant available and appropriate information is extracted and integrated in order to homogenise the care of the hypertensive patient, from a critical, but also a reasoned, perspective. The discrepancies between the recommendations in such essential aspects as the management of the disease, require the compiling and critical analysis of the information that enables us as scientific society, interested in providing all PC physicians with the most relevant, and at the same time, sensible, recommendations of all the guidelines.

This article is meant as an update on the previous articles published about the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM). It reflects the current organizational structure and describes its core activities. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the society are analyzed to define a strategic plan for the future of ISPRM. Key activities like ISPRM World Congresses, the foundation of the Journal of ISPRM and the creation of a certification project are described. The article reports also about the external relationship of ISPRM with different organizations and in particular with the World Health Organization and with the United Nations.

BACKGROUND: Renal dysfunction remains a global issue, with chronic kidney disease being the 18th most leading cause of death, worldwide. The increased demands in kidney transplants, led the scientific society to seek alternative strategies, utilizing mostly the tissue engineering approaches. Unlike to perfusion decellularization of kidneys, we proposed alternative decellularization strategies to obtain acellular kidney scaffolds. The aim of this study was the evaluation of two different decellularization approaches for producing kidney bioscaffolds. METHODS: Rat kidneys from Wistar rats, were submitted to decellularization, followed two different strategies. The decellularization solutions used in both approaches were the same and involved the use of 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl) dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate and sodium dodecyl sulfate buffers for 12 h each, followed by incubation in a serum medium. Both approaches involved 3 decellularization cycles. Histological analysis, biochemical and DNA quantification were performed. Cytotoxicity assay and repopulation of acellular kidneys were also applied. RESULTS: Histological, biochemical and DNA quantification confirmed that the 2nd approach had the best outcome regarding the kidney composition and cell elimination. Acellular kidneys from both approaches were successfully recellularized. CONCLUSION: Based on the above data, the production of kidney scaffolds with the proposed cost- effective decellularization approaches, was efficient. There is growing evidence linking vitamin D deficiency with risk of COVID-19. It is therefore distressing that there is major disagreement about the optimal serum level for 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and appropriate supplement dose. The UK Scientific Advisory Committee for Nutrition has set the lowest level for defining sufficiency (10 ng/ml or 25 nmol/L) of any national advisory body or scientific society and consequently recommends supplementation with 10 micrograms (400 IU) per day. We have searched for published evidence to support this but not found it. There is considerable evidence to support the higher level for sufficiency (20 ng/ml or 50 nmol/L) recommended by the European Food Safety Authority and the American Institute of Medicine and hence greater supplementation (20 micrograms or 800 IU per day). Serum 25(OH)D concentrations in the UK typically fall by around 50% through winter. We believe that governments should urgently recommend supplementation with 20-25 micrograms (800-1,000 IU) per day.

Non-invasive respiratory support (NIRS) in adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) comprises two treatment modalities, non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy. However, experts from different specialties disagree on the benefit of these techniques in different clinical settings. The objective of this consensus was to develop a series of good clinical practice recommendations for the application of non-invasive support in patients with ARF, endorsed by all scientific societies involved in the management of adult and pediatric/neonatal patients with ARF. To this end, the different societies involved were contacted, and they in turn appointed a group of 26 professionals with sufficient experience in the use of these techniques. Three face-to-face meetings were held to agree on recommendations (up to a total of 71) based on a literature review and the latest evidence associated with 3 categories: indications, monitoring and follow-up of NIRS. Finally, the experts from each scientific society involved voted telematically on each of the recommendations. To classify the degree of agreement, an analogue classification system was chosen that was easy and intuitive to use and that clearly stated whether the each NIRS intervention should be applied, could be applied, or should not be applied. Severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) occurs in around 1%-2% of deliveries and is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Different treatments of PPH are proposed by the scientific society's guidelines; to date, pelvic artery embolization is an effective therapeutic strategy with the advantages of fast speed, repeatability, and the possibility of future fertility preservation. We compared the different PPH treatments, focusing especially on the role of interventional radiology reviewing pelvic vascular anatomy and emphasizing on the timing of embolization and various clinical conditions of PPH.

Background: Along with the COVID-19 pandemic, a new problem has appeared in the healthcare facilities: toxicities and poisonings caused by medications and home remedies, by which people have been trying to protect themselves from acquiring the virus. The authors of this paper aim to notify the global scientific society of several substances and medications that either have led to poisonings thus far or have the potential for an outbreak. Methods: Medical English literature reporting cases of poisonings during this pandemic between January and December 2020. Substances and drugs that could be a potential concern to public health are also reviewed. Results: Alcohols and chemical substances have been the main causes of poisonings during this pandemic. Opioids, household products and herbal remedies were partly to blame. Global spread of incorrect information related to the COVID-19 prevention and treatment is a major risk to human lives, particularly in this difficult situation where healthcare systems are overwhelms with high rate of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. Conclusion: As additional waves of the coronaviruses may hit countries in the upcoming winter, confinements may as well continue. Therefore, emergency physicians must be prepared for possible outbreaks of poisonings and be able to predict any unusual pattern of toxicities.

But with the expansion and development of the datasets, the demand for accurate identification of Leukemia is becoming more demanding every day. In this research, we examined a Leukemia sub-types dataset that consists of three kinds of Leukemia individuals. We introduced and implemented a modified DenseNet-201 design and produced an overall accuracy of 99.56% which exceeded all the previous investigations.

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Chapter of the Association of Polish Surgeons (Polish acronym: SCMiB TCHP) is a Polish specialist scientific society representing bariatric surgeons as well as specialists from other disciplines and professions cooperating with them during the provision of services in the field of bariatric and metabolic surgery, as well as the entire care process before and after surgery. The following standards constitute the minimum requirements set by the SCMiB TCHP for good practice of the basic process of bariatric care throughout its entire period, which ensure satisfactory safety and effectiveness of the obesity treatment and its metabolic complications.

The National Blood Centre (NBC) at the request of the Italian Scientific Society of Haemapheresis and Cell Manipulation (SIdEM) has funded and developed a software dedicated to the collection of data related to therapeutic apheresis procedures, known as the Italian Registry of Therapeutic Apheresis (IRTA). Although on a voluntary basis, participation in the registry was widespread. The data collected includes type and number of procedures, patients treated and their outcomes, and reported adverse events to the procedures. For the years 2019 and 2020, the therapeutic apheresis procedure was widely used in the field of haematology, transplantation and rheumatology and was mainly associated with mild adverse events, thus showing a high level of safety. In addition to allowing the competent institution to monitor an important activity in the transfusion medicine field, the Registry is a new starting point for collaboration between transfusion centres distributed throughout the national territory and could encourage the design of major clinical trials.

The Gibraltar Skull, also known as Gibraltar 1 and the Forbes' Quarry skull, is Gibraltar's most famous fossil and has played an important role in our understanding of human evolution. In 1848 the skull was presented to the Gibraltar Scientific Society by its twenty-three-year-old Secretary, Lieutenant Edmund Henry Réné Flint; the receipt being recorded by a single line in its Minute Book. That record is the only known mention of the skull until its arrival in London in July 1864. The Society became the custodian of the skull from its presentation in 1848, to the Society's demise in 1853. Although the Society is mentioned in the majority of accounts of the discovery of the Gibraltar Skull, even if only to note that the skull was presented to the Society and that it was then subsequently stored away, almost no information about the Society exists in the published literature. The only surviving records of the Society's history are its Minute Book, several entries in one of the Minute Books of the Gibraltar Garrison Library, and The Gibraltar Chronicle and Commercial Intelligencer. This paper provides, for the first time, a history of the Society based on analysis of these sources, and from this assesses the curatorial and management approaches to its collection.

The article presents in detail the emergence and development of the Department of ophthalmology of Kazan state medical University. The Department of ophthalmology was organized in 1867 on the basis of the medical faculty of the Imperial Kazan University, the first head was Mikhail Vasilyevich Nikolsky. Since the creation, the Department is headed by outstanding scientists-ophthalmologists, who had made theoretical and practical contributions in domestic and global ophthalmology. To date the main focus areas of the Department of ophthalmology are development and introduction of new treatment methods for the diseases of ocular media, primary and secondary glaucoma, vitreoretinal pathology. For clinical interns and residents simulation training operating rooms are organized to train and improve practical skills. At the Department of ophthalmology of Kazan state medical university meetings of students’ scientific society are systematically conducted and students of the medical College and clinical interns and residents including those from near and far abroad countries are trained.

The article presents a review of methodological issues of estimation of glomerular filtration rate in urologic practice. Author examine the current international and national recommendations, in particular by KDIGO, the recommendations of the scientific society of nephrologists of Russia, Association of urologists of Russia, the results of comparative analysis of different methods of assessing glomerular filtration rate. It is shown that the currently calculated methods of assessment of glomerular filtration rate have advantages over technique of clearance. The advantages and disadvantages of methods for calculating glomerular filtration rate by the formula of Cockcroft-Gault and MDRD. The author lists the pathological conditions in urological practice, in which there is a need to assess glomerular filtration rate, given nomograms and links to online calculators for quick and easy calculation of glomerular filtration rate.

Aims Air filled catheters (AFCs) have been actively marketed for the past few years and in some geographic areas are widely used. However, as the scientific basis for introduction of this technology for pressure measurement in urodynamics was not clear, a study group examined the evidence. Methods A search of the peer reviewed literature was carried out. Results Four papers were identified, of which two were laboratory experiments and two were clinical papers, in female patients, that compared the pressures recorded by AFCs and those recorded using the traditional water filled catheters (WFCs). These data show that there are differences between the pressures measured by the two types of catheters. As yet, the reasons for these differences are not clear. Conclusions There should be further systematic laboratory and clinical research before AFCs can be recommended for routine clinical use. We would recommend that a professional worldwide multidisciplinary scientific society, such as the International Continence Society, should work with manufacturers and regulatory bodies to ensure that this urodynamic method is properly scientifically evaluated, in the wider interests of patient safety.

Progress in the understanding of thymic epithelial tumors (TET) are expected by improvement in tumor management as well as from discoveries in biological sciences. The data provided by the routine activity in health care of patients are as precious as the most advanced molecular investigation in tumor research. Therefore the recent JTD issue authored by the Chinese Alliance for Research in Thymomas (ChART), focused on thymic epithelial malignancy and covering a vast majority of clinical issues on these rare tumors, provides a summary of a longstanding experience on TET from the perspective of an authoritative scientific society/collaborative research group. Among the papers included in the ChART issue focusing on TET, an interesting paper from Zhu et al . is referring on the evaluation of clinicopathological features and outcome indicators in a TET series occurred at the Shanghai Chest Hospital (SCH) (1).

Introduction Informed consent document (ICD) must be obtained in those cases defined by law. The development of ICD templates by experts in medical scientific societies would ensure the quality of the information procedure. Method/results This study tracked (October–December 2014) the website of 152 official scientific societies and identified ICD in just 25.66% of them (39 societies); 56.41% of them (22 societies) offered free access to ICD (462 documents), and the others, restricted public access. Among the 17 societies that offered ICD exclusively for members, access was achieved in 6 of them with a total of 52 ICDs obtained. 41st Annual Meeting of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT 2015), Istanbul, Turkey, 22–25 March 2015 The European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) is the leading scientific society for professionals involved in hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) and represents 563 transplant centers from 57 countries within and outside Europe. Each year, the EBMT Annual Meeting brings together over 4,500 scientists, physicians, nurses, biologists, technicians and patients to discuss scientific data that build on past achievements in the field of HSCT. The procedure offers the chance of long-term remission of hematological and lymphoid cancers, but patients are at increased risk of serious infections, especially after allogeneic HSCT. These infections include the invasive fungal infections that were among the important topics discussed during EBMT 2015.

The increased demands of small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs) globally has forced the scientific society to explore alternative strategies utilizing the tissue engineering approaches. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) comprises one of the most lethal groups of non-communicable disorders worldwide. It has been estimated that in Europe, the healthcare cost for the administration of CVD is more than 169 billion €. Common manifestations involve the narrowing or occlusion of blood vessels. The replacement of damaged vessels with autologous grafts represents one of the applied therapeutic approaches in CVD. However, significant drawbacks are accompanying the above procedure; therefore, the exploration of alternative vessel sources must be performed. Engineered SDVGs can be produced through the utilization of non-degradable/degradable and naturally derived materials. Decellularized vessels represent also an alternative valuable source for the development of SDVGs. In this review, a great number of SDVG engineering approaches will be highlighted. Importantly, the state-of-the-art methodologies, which are currently employed, will be comprehensively presented. A discussion summarizing the key marks and the future perspectives of SDVG engineering will be included in this review. Taking into consideration the increased number of patients with CVD, SDVG engineering may assist significantly in cardiovascular reconstructive surgery and, therefore, the overall improvement of patients’ life.

Langenbeck advocated regular postgraduate education, the establishment of a higher educational institution for military doctors, created the Red Cross Society committee in Germany, the scientific society of military doctors, founded the scientific journal Archive of Clinical Surgery, the German Society of Surgeons, whose first chairman was from 1872 to 1885 Langenbek was awarded the title of Major General and the rank of Actual Privy Councilor. Despite three decades of intensive research, the efforts of scientific society and industry and the expenditures, numerous attempts to develop effective treatments for Alzheimer's disease have failed. Currently, approved and widely used medications to treat cognitive deficits in Alzheimer's disease are symptomatic only and show at best modest efficacy. In this context, the need to develop a successful, disease-modifying treatment is loudly expressed. One way to achieve this goal is the use of add-on therapies or various combinations of existing ‘conventional’ drugs. Results of several clinical studies and post hoc analyses of combination therapy with all cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine are published. This paper analyses the efficacy data from assisted reproduction clinics, obtained from both scientific society reports and from studies published in specialised journals, in order to compare them with information published by Spanish assisted reproduction clinics on their websites. It aims to verify whether this information matches the reality of the findings in the media analysed or, in contrast, differs from the aforementioned scientific evidence. Our study shows marked discrepancies between the evidence of existing statistical data, and figures published by most of the clinics on their websites, which could constitute false advertising. Arrhythmias and ischemic heart disease (IHD) prevail as SCD immediate direct mechanisms. Unfortunately, timely diagnostics of heart diseases is far below the satisfactory level. On the other hand, the number of patients to be followed up is increasing faster than the healthcare capacity. To close the gap, new approaches to diagnostics and prophylaxis of cardiovascular diseases are needed, involving innovative medical technologies. Implantable and external devices for heart arrhythmia and CAD early diagnostics are extensively used in modern cardiologic praxis. Impetuous development of this technique in combination with information and telecommunication technologies during last decade led to origination of completely new medical service based on mobile remote monitoring of patients. Background The American Psychosomatic Society is one of the oldest and probably the most influential scientific society in psychosomatic/biopsychosocial research worldwide. The current article delineates the historical development and current strategic orientation of the society. Method Review of published literature, archived materials and current documents of the society. Results The American Psychosomatic Society (APS) was founded in 1942, originally named the “American Society for Research in Psychosomatic Problems “. It originated from the editorial board of the Journal Psychosomatic Medicine, which had already been founded in 1939 and has become one of the major journals in the field. As an organization, APS has developed into a premier international scientific society, providing an interdisciplinary home for researchers from medicine, psychology and related areas, gathering under the mission “to advance and integrate the scientific study of biological, psychological, behavioral and social factors in health and disease” and dedicated to the goals of Scientific Excellence, Clinical Relevance, and Vibrant and Diverse Membership. Besides editing Psychosomatic Medicine, the APS organizes Annual Meetings and specialized events, issues several scientific awards and scholarships and is engaged in collaborative efforts to improve the research and funding landscape for biobehavioral research in the US and translate psychosomatic research findings into medical education and clinical practice. Conclusion In its 75th anniversary year, the American Psychosomatic Society has developed into the scientific landscape of the 21st century, and its current updated strategy addresses contemporary demands in advancing science and improving holistic patient care.

Objectives: Hindsight bias is inevitable in retrospective peer reviews, especially in medical settings. Psychiatrists are highly at risk of hindsight bias, because of the repeated patient hospitalization and the use of medications with a lot of side effects. The goal of our study was to investigate the effect of hindsight bias on psychiatrists’ clinical judgment. Methods: We conducted our survey in 173 psychiatrists who participated in the congress of scientific society of psychiatrists in Iran in December 2010. A clinical vignette was presented to participants and they reviewed hypothetical cases in which patients with bipolar or psychotic features presented for psychiatric care. We informed two-thirds of the participants that a bipolar or psychotic feature accompanied patients’ symptoms (hindsight group) but withheld outcome information from the other participants (control group). Participants were asked to estimate the likelihood of each differential diagnosis. Results: Responses were compared between groups for suggestions of hindsight bias. European and American recommendations have recently been published for the treatment of proliferative lupus nephritis (LN). This study aimed to describe current practice in France. An electronic survey was sent to French nephrologists and internists via their scientific society between March and December 2012. One hundred and nine specialists (60 internists, 48 nephrologists and 1 rheumatologist), mostly from hospitals, completed the survey. Low-dose cyclophosphamide (Euro-Lupus) was the first induction immunosuppressive therapy used (67%), followed by mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) (20%) and high dose CYC (NIH, 9%). Maintenance immunosuppressive therapy after an induction with CYC was preferentially MMF (58%), versus 14% for azathioprine (AZA) and 25% using either MMF or AZA without preference. After an induction with MMF, maintenance treatment was mainly MMF (77%). Antimalarial drugs were prescribed systematically by 86% of specialists. In patients in stable remission, maintenance treatment was withdrawn after 2 years (40%), 3 years (25%) or more (34%). Low-dose corticosteroids were continued in the long-term by 54% of specialists. No difference was observed between nephrologists and internists, even in the prescription of antimalarials. Treatment of proliferative LN in France is homogenous enough and is consistent with recent international recommendations.

Advances in the management of children with chronic liver disease have enabled many to survive into adulthood with or without their native livers, so that the most common of these conditions are becoming increasingly common in adult hepatology practice. Because the aetiologies of chronic liver disease in children may vary significantly from those in adulthood, adults with paediatric-onset chronic liver disease may often present with clinical manifestations unfamiliar to their adulthood physician. Transition of medical care to adult practice requires that the adulthood medical staff (primary physicians and subspecialists) have a comprehensive knowledge of childhood liver disease and their implications, and of the differences in caring for these patients. Pending still unavailable Scientific Society guidelines, this article examines causes, presentation modes, evaluation, management, and complications of the main paediatric-onset chronic liver diseases, and discusses key issues to aid in planning a program of transition from paediatric to adult patients.
