SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the risk factors for in-hospital mortality in a cohort of patients admitted to a newly adapted intensive care unit in a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro. METHODS: This was an observational, retrospective, and descriptive study. Data were obtained from electronic medical records. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was diagnosed by detecting viral ribonucleic acid using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Factors associated with the risk/protection from death were determined using the odds ratio and adjusted odds ratio. RESULTS: Fifty-one patients were admitted to the hospital. The median age of the patients was 63 years, 60% were male patients, and 54% were white patients. Sixty-seven percent of the patients were diagnosed with COVID-19. Sepsis at admission increased the chance of in-hospital death by 21 times (adjusted odds ratio=21.06 [0.79–555.2]; p=0.06). The strongest risk factor for death was the development of septic shock during hospitalization (adjusted odds ratio=98.56 [2.75–352.5]; p=0.01), and one in four patients had multidrug-resistant bacteria. Mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, neuromuscular blockers, and sedatives were also the risk factors for in-hospital mortality. The in-hospital mortality rate was 41%, and the mortality rate of patients on mechanical ventilation was 60%. The diagnosis of COVID-19 was not statistically related to the adverse outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort, the strongest risk factor for in-hospital death was the development of nosocomial septic shock. Healthcare-associated infections have a significant impact on mortality rates. Therefore, to have a better outcome, it is important to consider not only the availability of beds but also the way healthcare is delivered.

Background Intermittent fasting (IF) and aerobic training have demonstrated beneficial effects on intestinal microbiota composition, but little is known about benefits to the brain through the gut-brain axis. The present study aimed to evaluate gut-brain axis parameters in Wistar rats submitted to IF associated or not with aerobic training. Methods Male rats were evaluated for training performance and then randomized into 4 groups of ten: sedentary control (SC), trained control (TC), sedentary intermittent fasting (SIF), and trained intermittent fasting (TIF), and evaluated during four weeks. Results The adiposity index was similar among the TC (2.15±0.43%), SIF (1.98±0.69%) and TIF (1.86±0.51%) groups, and differed from SC (2.98±0.80%). TIF had lower counts of lactic acid bacteria, while SIF had higher counts of Bifidobacterium and Enterococcus. TIF had the highest amount of formic acid in faeces (44.44±2.40 μmol/g) and lowest amount of succinic acid in the gut (0.38±0.00 μmol/g), while SIF had the highest propionic acid amount in the faeces (802.80±00.33 μmol/g) and the lowest amount of lactic acid in the gut (0.85±0.00 μmol/g). TIF demonstrated a tendency towards an anxiolytic effect and SIF showed potential antidepressant effect. IF caused different brain and intestinal injuries. TIF rats presented a diffuse and intense marking of IL-1β in the hippocampus. Conclusion IF and aerobic exercise, associated or not, can modulate parameters related to the gut-brain axis of Wistar rats, and some benefits may be related to the amounts of organic acids.

This study evaluated the effects of flours from four different sweet potato root (SPR) varieties, being two with white peel and two with purple peel, on the composition and metabolic activity of human colonic microbiota in vitro. The capability of these SPR flours (20 g/L) to cause alterations in relative abundance of different bacterial groups found as part of human colonic microbiota, as well as in lactic acid and short-chain fatty acid production was evaluated during 48 hr of an in vitro colonic fermentation. The SPR flours were submitted to a simulated gastrointestinal digestion prior to use in experiments. The four SPR flours increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus/Enterococcus (range: 0.49-4.48%) and Bifidobacterium (range: 0.32-3.27%) and decreased the relative abundance of Bacteroides/Prevotella (range: 0.29-7.49%), Clostridium histolyticum (range: 0.15-2.08%), and Eubacterium rectale/Clostridium coccoides (range: 0.28-3.86%) during the 48 hr of colonic fermentation. The four SPRF flours had positive prebiotic indexes (> 0.38) after 24 and 48 hr of colonic fermentation, reinforcing the occurrence of selective stimulatory effects on colonic microbiota. An increased metabolic activity of human colonic microbiota was caused by tested SPR flours, which was evidenced by decreased pH (range: 3.20-3.83) and increased lactic acid and short chain fatty acid production during the 48 hr of colonic fermentation. The four examined SPR flours were capable of causing positive alterations in composition and driving the metabolic activity of human colonic microbiota during in vitro colonic fermentation, which should be linked to their prebiotic properties. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The four examined sweet potato root flours (SPRF) caused beneficial alterations in composition besides of driving the metabolic activity of human colonic microbiota in vitro. These results characterize the examined SPRF as candidates for use as prebiotic ingredients by food industry for formulation of value-added functional foods or dietary supplements.

Background The Brazilian population has a tri-hybrid composition with a high degree of ethnic admixture. We hypothesized that Brazilian individuals with CF from different Brazilian regions have a specific distribution of CFTR variants. Methods Individuals with CF with data available in the Patient Registry and without an established genotype were submitted to CFTR sequencing by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methodology, and results were anonymously incorporated to the Registry Database. Genotyping results were expressed as ‘positive’, ‘inconclusive’ or ‘negative’. Logistic regression models were performed to investigate the association between demographic/clinical variables and genotyping results. Mediation analysis was conducted to estimate direct and indirect effects of Brazilian region on a binary positive genotyping response. Results In October 2017, data from 4,654 individuals with CF were available, and 3,104(66.7%) of them had a genotyping result. A total of 236 variants (114 new variants) were identified, with F508del identified in 46% of the alleles tested. Genotyping revealed 2,002(64.5%) individuals positive, 757(24.4%) inconclusive and 345(11.1%) negative. Distribution of genotype categories was markedly different across Brazilian Regions, with greater proportions of negative individuals in the North (45%) and Northeast (26%) regions. Newborn screening (CF-NBS) and age at diagnosis were identified as mediators of the effect of Brazilian region on a positive genotyping result. Conclusions This large initiative of CFTR genotyping showed significant regional discrepancies in Brazil, probably related to socio-economic conditions, lack of adequate CF-NBS and poor access to reliable sweat testing. These results may be useful to indicate Regions where CF care demands more attention.

Introduction Since the beginning of the current coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), there has been great concern over a disease that has spread rapidly in several countries worldwide, with the result of several deaths, including deaths of pregnant women. Objective Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on placental changes in infected pregnant women and/or asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 during pregnancy, aiming at the possible vertical transmission. Methodology A systematic collection was carried out on the effects of that COVID-19 can cause directly and/or indirectly to pregnancy and the placenta in the following databases: Pubmed, Science Direct, Scielo, Lilacs and Web of Science. For search, the following descriptors were used: placenta, pregnant woman, COVID-19, maternal-fetal. Results The results indicate transplacental transmission in some cases reviewed in many reports from this study. The presence of the virus was seen in the amniotic fluid, umbilical cord and peripheral blood. Finally, pathological studies suggest that there are morphological changes related to infection in the placentas. Conclusion We can conclude that, based on the researched material, there is little evidence of transplacental vertical viral transmission and its respective morphological changes related to viral infection in the placenta., Summary sentence:there is small evidence of transplacental vertical viral transmission and its respective morphological changes related to viral infection in the placenta.

Resumo Este estudo analisa os comportamentos relacionados ao estilo de vida de adolescentes em Recife, Brasil. Estudo transversal com dados do Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescentes (ERICA). 2.400 estudantes de 12 a 17 anos foram entrevistados. Foram analisadas as prevalências de atividade física, comportamento alimentar, tabagismo e consumo de álcool. O teste Qui-quadrado e Intervalo de confiança 95% (IC95%) foram usados para avaliar a significância estatística das medidas. Observou-se 60% dos adolescentes com comportamentos alimentares inadequados quanto ao consumo de café da manhã, água/dia e refeições em frente à TV. Cerca de 40% (IC95%: 39,7-45) não realizavam refeições com os pais ou responsáveis. A prevalência de inatividade física foi de 52,4% (IC95%: 50-55). Adolescentes do sexo feminino foram mais inativas (68,7%; IC95%: 65-72) em relação aos meninos (36,4%; IC95%: 33-40). Adolescentes das classes econômicas D e E foram os mais inativos (60,7%; IC95%: 46-73). O consumo de bebida alcoólica foi de 18,7% (IC95%: 2,6-5,6) e o tabagismo foi de 3,8% (IC95%: 2-6) dos indivíduos. Comportamentos alimentares inadequados e a inatividade física foram os principais domínios responsáveis por um estilo de vida não saudável, seguidos pelo consumo de álcool e tabagismo. Abstract This study analyzes the behavior patterns related to the lifestyle of adolescents in Recife, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted with data from the Cardiovascular Risk Study among Adolescents (ERICA) and 2400 students aged 12 to 17 were interviewed. The prevalence of physical activity, eating behavior, smoking and alcohol consumption were analyzed. The Chi-square test and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were used to evaluate the statistical significance of the measurements. It was observed that 60% of the adolescents presented inadequate eating behaviors regarding the consumption of breakfast, daily water intake and meals eaten in front of the TV. About 40% (95%CI: 39.7-45) did not sit down to meals with their parents or guardians. The prevalence of physical inactivity was 52.4% (95%CI: 50-55). Female adolescents were more inactive (68.7%, 95%CI: 65-72) than males (36.4%, 95%CI: 33-40). Teenagers of economic classes D and E were the most inactive (60.7%, 95%CI: 46-73). Alcohol consumption was 18.7% (95%CI: 2.6-5.6) and smoking was prevalent in 3.8% (95%CI: 2-6) of the individuals. Inadequate eating behaviors and physical inactivity were the main areas responsible for an unhealthy lifestyle, followed by alcohol consumption and smoking.

Purpose To evaluate ultrasound signs of coronavirus disease‐19 (COVID‐19) pneumonia in symptomatic healthcare professionals and to correlate those changes with clinical findings. Methods All patients underwent real‐time polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR), lung ultrasound (LUS) and clinical evaluation on the same day. In each of the 12 areas evaluated in the LUS, the LUS signs were scored to generate the aeration score. Results A total of 409 participants had positive PCR, with a median age of 41 (35‐51) years. All participants had clinical symptoms, with cough in 84.1%, fever in 69.7%, and dyspnea in 36.2% of cases. In the LUS, 72.6% of participants had B‐lines >2, 36.2% had coalescent B‐lines, and 8.06% had subpleural consolidations. The median aeration score was 3 (2‐7). Devido à pandemia da doença COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019), causada pelo vírus Sars-Cov-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2), as organizações foram influenciadas a mudarem suas rotinas de trabalho para contribuir com a redução de casos do vírus mundialmente. Em virtude da alta velocidade de contágio e falta de medicamentos efetivos para o tratamento da doença, a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) orientou que a melhor opção seria o isolamento social. Algumas empresas adotaram a prática do Home Office com o objetivo de continuarem entregando resultados positivos e, paralelamente, tentarem frear um outro problema que pode ser ocasionado pela pandemia: o desemprego em massa e uma crise econômica global. Visando contribuir com a sociedade nas medidas de mitigação da pandemia da COVID-19, o presente trabalho foi fundamentado na apresentação das melhores práticas que podem auxiliar nas atividades de trabalho remoto. O objetivo do trabalho é, portanto, apresentar um panorama atualizado sobre as Digital Skills no processo decisório, na análise de dados, na comunicação coorporativa e no aumento de produtividade, em meio às medidas de isolamento social para evitar a propagação do vírus Sars-Cov-2.

Este artigo tem por objetivo aplicar o método SAPEVO-M a fim de selecionar o Navio da Marinha do Brasil (MB) mais indicado a ser empregado no apoio ao combate à pandemia de COVID-19. Para a análise proposta, foram comparados os três navios da Esquadra mais comumente empregados em ações de ajuda humanitária: PHM “Atlântico”, NDM “Bahia” e NDCC “Saboia”. O navio escolhido seria empregado como Navio-Hospital, focando seus atendimentos médicos em casos menos graves, de doenças não-contagiosas, ajudando a aliviar o sistema hospitalar do país, que corre o risco de colapsar devido ao elevado número de casos de COVID-19. Os navios tiveram suas características operacionais e instalações hospitalares avaliadas por Oficiais Médicos e operativos da MB, levando em consideração os critérios mobilidade, capacidade aérea e capacidade hospitalar. Este trabalho traz uma valiosa contribuição para a academia e sociedade, uma vez que representa a aplicação de um método de auxílio à decisão multicritério no estado da arte para contribuir com a solução de um problema real que afeta milhões de pessoas no mundo. Após a aplicação do método, o NDM “Bahia” foi selecionado para ser empregado como Navio-Hospital no combate à pandemia.

Fructooligosaccharides and digested microalgae biomass increased Lactobacillus-Enterococcus and Bifidobacterium relative abundances and decreased Prevotellaceae-Bacteroidaceae, Clostridium histolyticum, and Eubacterium rectale-Clostridium coccoides. The digested microalgae biomass s showed a higher prebiotic index than fructooligosaccharides, evidenced through the higher selective stimulation of beneficial microorganisms and inhibition of undesirable bacteria on colonic microbiota. S. platensis biomass contained nystose, raffinose, and phenolics, increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus-Enterococcus and Bifidobacterium, and decreased Eubacterium rectale-Clostridium coccoides, Clostridium histolyticum, and Prevotellaceae-Bacteroidaceae. After 24 h of incubation, the medium fermented with S. platensis promoted an increase in the concentration of acetic and propionic acids. D. maximus biomass showed higher insoluble fibers and kestose, the greatest Lactobacillus-Enterococcus relative abundance, and increases in the butyric and propionic acids after 48 h. C. vulgaris biomass showed the highest glucose and fructose concentrations, some phenolics, and the highest Bifidobacterium relative abundance after 48 h. In vitro techniques are essential to assess the antioxidant potential of foods, although methods with diferent action mechanisms make troublesome data analysis. This article describes the use of artifcial neural network (ANN) to associate phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity in vitro (AOX) of grape juices. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) ANN was obtained with 28 phenolics quantifed, as input layers, and AOX measuring by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, H2O2, and β-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching assay (βCLA) methods, as output layers. To improve discussion in food sciences, the ANN results were compared with Pearson?s correlation and principal component analysis (PCA), methods largely used in food studies. Pearson?s technique showed correlations between antioxidant methods and some of the phenolic compounds, but with limitations. PCA proved to be a more powerful method than Pearson?s correlation, as it positively associated 13 phenolics with four out of fve antioxidant methods. The MLP-ANN allowed simultaneous association of 19 individual phenolics, while a single hidden layer predicted 15 phenolics with simultaneous action in all AOX methods. The power of association was: ANN>PCA>Pearson. It was evidenced that ANN is a powerful tool for screening antioxidants in diferent AOX systems, which is applicable in health interests. High-fat diet (HFD) consumption has been linked to dyslipidemia, low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress. This study investigated the effects of a mixed formulation with Limosilactobacillus fermentum 139, L. fermentum 263 and L. fermentum 296 on cardiometabolic parameters, fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) contents and biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in colon and heart tissues of male rats fed an HFD. Male Wistar rats were grouped into control diet (CTL, n = 6), HFD (n = 6) and HFD with L. fermentum formulation (HFD-Lf, n = 6) groups. The L. fermentum formulation (1 × 109 CFU/mL of each strain) was administered twice a day for 4 weeks. After a 4-week follow-up, biochemical parameters, fecal SCFA, cytokines and oxidative stress variables were evaluated. HFD consumption caused hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, low-grade inflammation, reduced fecal acetate and propionate contents and increased biomarkers of oxidative stress in colon and heart tissues when compared to the CTL group. Rats receiving the L. fermentum formulation had reduced hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia, but similar SCFA contents in comparison with the HFD group (p &lt, 0.05). Rats receiving the L. fermentum formulation had increased antioxidant capacity throughout the colon and heart tissues when compared with the control group. Administration of a mixed L. fermentum formulation prevented hyperlipidemia, inflammation and oxidative stress in colon and heart tissues induced by HFD consumption.

This study elaborated different formulations with xique-xique (Pilosocereus gounellei) cladode, passion fruit and lime juice and sugar cane syrup. The formulated beverages were subjected to physical and physicochemical analysis, determination of total carotenoid, total flavonoid and total phenolic compound contents, as well as of their antioxidant activity (ABTS and FRAP method), organic acid, sugar and phenolic compound profile during 21 days of refrigeration storage (4 °C). Significant variations were found among formulated beverages for most of the measured parameters during storage. Beverages with xique-xique juice were less acidic (7.90–10.27 g/100 mL) than beverages without this juice (11.66–12.76 g/100 mL). Beverages with xique-xique juice had overall higher contents of bioactive compounds and higher antioxidant activity when compared to the control formulation. Beverages with the highest xique-xique juice concentrations had the highest contents of carotenoids (51.51–59.27 µg/100 mL), flavonoids (1.39–2.15 mg CE/100 mL), phenolic compounds (68.49–115.66 mg EGA/100 mL) and antioxidant activity, as measured by ABTS (0.71–0.84 µmol Trolox/mL) and FRAP (0.33–0.39 µmol Trolox/mL). These results indicate that the incorporation of xique-xique cladode juice in these mixed beverages enhanced their bioactive properties, especially of antioxidant compounds, enabling the development of a new product with potential functional properties to the beverage industry.

INTRODUCTION Silicosis is a fibrotic lung disease resulting from the inhalation of crystalline silica and can be classified as simple or complicated according to the International Labour Organization criteria. Furthermore, individuals exposed to crystalline silica also have a higher risk for the development of tuberculosis (Tb). The contribution of inflammatory cytokines to the risk of silicosis and Tb in different populations has previously been reported. Since genetic background might be related to susceptibility to silicosis and Tb, the study of polymorphisms within IL-1α, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor protein-coding genes may contribute to elucidating the genetic basis of these diseases. METHODS Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction using restriction fragment length polymorphism or by Taqman methodology, in a sample of 102 silica-exposed patients from Brazil. RESULTS No significant associations were observed between the SNPs studied and the severity of silicosis. However, significant associations were found between Tb and the C allele (odds ratio [OR] = 1.93, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-3.73) and the CC genotype (OR = 2.34, 95% CI, 1.04-5.31) of IL1A -899C>T. The IL1B +3954C>T polymorphism also showed an association with Tb (T allele dominant model OR = 2.38, 95% CI, 1.04-5.41). CONCLUSION These preliminary results demonstrate that the IL1A and IL1B gene variations may contribute to some extent to susceptibility to Tb, but not silicosis. However, additional studies are still needed to confirm these results.

The relationship among social determinants, vitamin D serum concentration and the health and nutrition conditions is an important issue in the healthcare of pregnant women and newborns. Thus, the present study analyses how vitamin D, prenatal monitoring and social determinants are associated with birth weight. The cohort comprised 329 pregnant women, up to 34 weeks gestational age at the time of admission, who were receiving care through the prenatal services of Family Health Units. Structural equation modelling was used in the statistical analysis. The mean birth weight was 3340 (sd 0·545) g. Each nmol increase in maternal vitamin D serum concentration was associated with an increase in birth weight of 3·06 g. Prenatal healthcare with fewer appointments (β −41·49 g, 95 % CI −79·27, −3·71) and late onset of care in the second trimester or third trimester (β −39·24 g, 95 % CI −73·31, −5·16) favoured decreased birth weight. In addition, low socio-economic class and the practice of Afro-Brazilian religions showed a direct association with high vitamin D serum concentrations and an indirect association with high birth weight, respectively. High gestational BMI (β 23·84, 95 % CI 4·37, 43·31), maternal education level (β 24·52 g, 95 % CI 1·82, 47·23) and length of gestation (β 79·71, 95 % CI 52·81; 106·6) resulted in high birth weight. In conclusion, maternal vitamin D serum concentration, social determinants and prenatal care, evaluated in the context of primary healthcare, directly determined birth weight.

However, no study has evaluated the effect of AC on exam anxiety in undergraduate students. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether AC reduces pre-examination anxiety compared to placebo (PL) and non- intervention (NI). Methods: Twenty students from the first terms of physiotherapy and dentistry courses were randomized to receive AC, PL and NI in a crossover manner and subsequently completed three anatomy exams with an interval of 1 month between exams/interventions. AC was performed on acupoints PC-6 (Neiguan), HT-7 (Shenmen), LV-3 (Taichong) and Yintang one day prior to each exam. The PL was performed outside the meridians and the needles were inserted superficially without obtaining De Qi. Levels of anxiety were measured using a visual analogue scale before and after each intervention as well as before each exam. Results: Anxiety levels were reduced after AC and PL intervention compared to NI on the day before the exam, as well as on the day of the exam. Conclusion: These results suggest that AC can be used as an anxiolytic method in students under conditions of situational stress. OBJECTIVES: Arthrocentesis is the simplest surgical intervention for the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). It can be performed on an outpatient basis at a low cost and with low morbidity. The objective is to release the articular disc by disrupting the adhesion formed between its surfaces and the mandibular fossa through hydraulic pressure generated by irrigation of the upper compartment of the TMJ. Viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid during or after arthrocentesis improves clinical outcomes, increases mouth opening, and reduces pain levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of arthrocentesis plus hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation through clinical examination and preoperative magnetic resonance imaging in patients with unilateral disc displacement without reduction (DDwoR). METHODS: This analytical retrospective cross-sectional study clinically and radiologically evaluated 72 patients of both sexes with unilateral DDwoR. The following data were collected: sex, pain, age, duration of pain, maximum mouth opening, and patient pain perception on a visual analog scale. TMJ arthrocentesis was performed only once for each of the indicated joints. Data were collected before arthrocentesis (baseline) and at 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, and 180 days after the procedure (final evaluation). RESULTS: Between the baseline and final evaluation, there was a significant reduction in pain (p=0.001) and restoration of articular function. In addition, there was a significant increase in maximum mouth opening (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: Patients with DDwoR undergoing arthrocentesis combined with hyaluronic acid injection showed significant improvement in the perceived pain and maximum mouth opening in the mid-term follow-up periods.

Residues from wine and juice processing still contain about 70% of the phenolic compounds in grapes. These compounds are valued for having several bioactive properties that are explored in the pharmaceutical and food sectors. This paper aims to summarize the most recent advances in the use of enzymatic techniques for the recovery of bioactive compounds from GP for industrial application. For this, we analyzed scientific articles and patent applications from the last 20 years in the main indexed and patent databases. Among the most used enzymes in the recovery of bioactive compounds in wastes, cellulases, pectinases, tannases, glucoamylases, and proteases such as trypsin and chymotrypsin, are the most important. As a result, extracts are obtained with greater retrieval of compounds such as anthocyanins, gallic acid, catechins, epicatechins, and trans-resveratrol and the improvement of coloring, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and vasoprotective properties. Although the use of enzymes for the recovery of phenolics is an old strategy, the number of studies focusing on the functional characteristics and industrial applicability of the extracts obtained has been recently growing. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Phenolic compounds have acted as anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, anticarcinogens, and antimicrobials, being additives or relevant ingredients for various products in the food and pharmaceutical industry. Although there are several techniques for extracting/recovering phenolics from grape pomace, there is still no agreement on which method is ideal. In recent years, several extractions methods have been applied in seeking optimized conditions to recover phenolics from grape residues. Among them, the use of enzymes has been gaining attention for being considered a green and promising technology. The present study aims to carry out a review that would bring a new perspective to the recovery of bioactive compounds from grape residues by enzymatic techniques, with a view to industrial purpose.

The benefits of grape consumption are widely recognized and mostly due to phenolic compounds. These beneficial effects will depend on the bioaccessibility of these compounds on grape and its derivatives. This study elaborated two formulations of Isabel grape preparation: PAX (with agave and xylitol) and PS (with sucrose); and two formulations of Isabel grape flour: FAX (from the PAX process residues) and the FS (from the PS process residues). The products were analyzed regarding their nutritional and antioxidant properties; their phenolic compounds’ bioaccessibility was also verified through a simulated digestion model. The preparation and flour exhibited relevant sugars levels (10.83-49.71 g 100 g-1). Those produced with natural sweeteners had a reduction in sugar concentration of 51% and 29% for preparation and flour, respectively, compared to formulations with sucrose, with the high fiber content in the flour is being further highlighted (20.14-21.95 g 100 g-1). The catechin (2.37-28.11 mg 100 g-1) was the most bioaccessible compound (22% to 168%), which together with the caftaric acid (2.31-69.43 mg 100 g-1) and malvidin 3-glucoside (8.65-16.47 mg 100 g-1) represent the compounds observed in greater quantity. The preparations showed higher bioaccessibility regarding grapes and flours for most of the phenolic compounds. Furthermore, the products elaborated presented higher values of anthocyanins and antioxidant activity than the in natura grape, highlighting the beneficial effect of grape processing., Os benefícios do consumo da uva já são amplamente reconhecidos e devem-se em grande parte aos compostos fenólicos. Esses efeitos benéficos irão depender da bioacessibilidade desses compostos na uva e em seus derivados. Foram elaboradas duas formulações de preparado de uva Isabel: PAX (com agave e xilitol) e PS (com sacarose); e duas formulações de farinha de uva Isabel: FAX (a partir do resíduo do processamento do PAX) e FS (a partir do resíduo do processamento do PS). Os produtos foram analisados quanto às suas propriedades nutricionais e antioxidantes, e a bioacessibilidade de seus compostos fenólicos foi verificada por meio de um modelo de digestão simulada. A catequina (2,37-28,11 mg 100 g-1) foi o composto mais bioacessível (22% a 168%), que juntamente com o ácido caftárico (2,31-69,43 mg 100 g-1) e o malvidina 3-glicosídeo (8,65-16,47 mg 100 g-1) representam os compostos observados em maior quantidade. O preparado teve maior bioacessibilidade tanto em relação à uva quanto à farinha para a maioria dos compostos fenólicos. Além disso, os produtos elaborados apresentaram maiores valores de antocianinas e atividade antioxidante que a uva in natura, destacando o efeito benéfico do processamento da uva.

Recently, in China, in 2019, a new type of disease has arisen caused by a new strain of coronavirus, the SARS-CoV-2 virus, considered extremely worrying due to its high infectivity power and the easy ability to spread geographically. For patients in general, the clinical features resulting from respiratory syndromes can trigger an asymptomatic condition. However, 25 % of patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 can progress to severity. Pregnant women are an unknown field in this complex process, and although they have symptoms similar to non-pregnant women, some points should be considered, such as complications during pregnancy and postpartum. Thus, the aim of this study was to understand the consequences of pregnancy and fetal development, caused by infections by the SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Among the aforementioned infections, MERS-CoV seems to be the most dangerous for newborns, inducing high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, pneumonia, acute renal failure, and multiple organ failure in mother. This also causes a higher occurrence of emergency cesarean deliveries and premature births, in addition, some deaths of mothers and fetuses were recorded. Meanwhile, SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 appear to have less severe symptoms. Furthermore, although a study found the ACE2 receptor, used by SARS-CoV-2, widely distributed in specific cell types of the maternal-fetal interface, there is no evidence of vertical transmission for any of the coronaviruses. Thus, the limited reported obstetric cases alert to the need for advanced life support for pregnant women infected with coronaviruses and to the need for further investigation for application in clinical practice.

This study evaluated the effect of Mucuna pruriens (MP) administration on neuroinflammation and behavioral and murinometric parameters in obese rats. Proximate composition, oligosaccharide and phenolic compound profile of MP were determined. Wistar adult male rats were randomized into healthy (HG) and obese group (OG). The HG consumed a control chow diet while OG consumed a cafeteria diet for eight weeks. Then, they were subdivided into: Healthy (HG), Healthy with MP administration (HGMP), Obese (OG), Obese with MP administration (OGMP), with the consumption of the respective diets remaining for another eight weeks, in addition to gavage with MP extract to supplemented groups (750 mg/kg weight). MP presented a composition rich in proteins and phenolic compounds, especially catechin, in addition to 1-kestose and levodopa. Supplementation reduced food intake, body weight, and thoracic and abdominal circumferences in obese rats. MP showed anxiolytic and antidepressant effects and reduced morphological damage and expression of interleukin 6 in the hippocampus of obese rats. MP treatment showed satietogenic, slimming, anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, besides to minimizing hippocampal neuroinflammation in obese rats. Our results demonstrated the potential anti-obesity of MP which are probably related to the high content of bioactive compounds present in this plant extract.

Silicosis is a lung disease of fibrotic nature resulting from the inhalation and deposition of dust containing crystalline silica. Subjects exposed to the same environmental factors may show distinct radiological manifestations, and since silicosis is known as a multifactorial disease, it is plausible that individual genetic susceptibility may play a role in the pathology. This review of the literature aims to provide an assessment of the present data on the genetic association studies in silicosis and describe the genes that potentially might influence silicosis susceptibility in silica-exposed individuals.We accessed the database of PubMed for articles published in English about interindividual genetic susceptibility to silicosis using terms related to the subject matter.Following the evaluation process, 28 studies were included in this systematic review, including 23 original studies and 5 meta-analyses.Regardless of the advances in the knowledge of the importance of gene variations in silicosis, more studies need to be performed, in particular, special polygenic and genome-wide investigations.

Cashew apple by-product (CAB) is an important agro-industrial waste still underutilized, although it has been characterized as source of a variety of nutrients and bioactive compounds. This study evaluated the capability of freeze-dried CAB (FCAB) submitted to a simulated gastrointestinal digestion of inducing changes in relative abundance of distinct microbial groups found as part of human colonic microbiota, as well as in pH and short-chain fatty acid production during a 24-h in vitro fermentation using a pooled human fecal inocula. FCAB increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus/Enterococcus during colonic fermentation, besides to decrease the relative abundance of Bacteroides/Prevotella, Eubacterium rectale/Clostridium coccoides, and Clostridium histolyticum. FCAB increased the counts of lactic acid bacteria and decreased the counts of Enterobacteriaceae during colonic fermentation. Furthermore, FCAB decreased pH and increased the production of short-chain fatty acids in colonic fermentation media. These effects could be linked to contents of dietary fibers and the presence of fructans and different phenolic compounds found in FCAB. These results showed that FCAB induced positive alterations in composition and metabolic activity of human colonic microbiota in vitro, which indicate prebiotic properties.

Objetivo: Avaliar a evolução clínica de pacientes com Tuberculose Resistente a Múltiplos Medicamentos atendidos em um centro de referência na região Amazônica, entre os anos de 2010 a 2014. Métodos: Pesquisa transversal, descritiva e de abordagem quantitativa, através do levantamento de dados de pacientes atendidos no Hospital Universitário de Belém do Pará,entre os anos de 2010 e 2014. Resultados: Houve a predominância do sexo masculino e a faixa etária mais acometida foi a que está na fase mais produtiva (18 a 55 anos), a forma secundária da doença esteve presente em 94,1% dos casos, o tempo de diagnóstico e o início do tratamento de 1 a 10 dias apresentou-se na maioria, quanto ao perfil de resistências às drogas que prevaleceram foram a rifampicina, isoniazida e a estreptomicina e a comorbidades mais associada foi o diabetes. Conclusão: Existe uma grande complexidade envolvendo os aspectos relacionados ao tratamento de Tuberculose Resistente a Múltiplos Medicamentos, e que estes fatores contribuem para a manutenção dos altos índices da doença, como a escassez de tecnologias como o diagnóstico rápido da doença e a disponibilidade de mais alternativas de tratamento mais eficazes. O fator limitante da pesquisa se deu ao fato de se tratar de dados de prontuários, não houve um padrão de registros e em alguns, a escassez de informações.

A condicao corporal ao parto apresenta grande influencia na ciclicidade reprodutiva e no restabelecimento da condicao uterina. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar o efeito do Escore de Condicao Corporal (ECC) na atividade ovariana, caracterizada pela ovulacao no periodo pos-parto de vacas holandesas. Avaliou-se 58 vacas holandesas em lactacao, sendo estas avaliadas por exame ginecologico ultrassonografico e identificado o periodo de ovulacao pos parto (PP) e classificando-os em tres grupos: ovulacao precoce (menor que 45 dias PP), ovulacao intermediaria (entre 45 e 90 dias PP), ovulacao tardia (acima de 90 dias PP). Os animais foram classificados segundo o ECC por um veterinario treinado em dois grupos: ECC baixo (inferior a 2,5) e ECC alto (superior ou igual a 2,5). Verificou-se que vacas com escore corporal superior a 2,5 apresentaram ovulacao mais precoce.

Um dos fatores de grande viabilidade e retorno economico dentro da pecuaria e a otimizacao, por meio de biotecnologias, que visam melhorar o indice reprodutivo em novilhas. A Inseminacao Artificial em Tempo Fixo (IATF) dispoe de inumeras vantagens. Protocolos hormonais foram desenvolvidos com o intuito de controlar o ciclo estral em matrizes bovinas e regular a dinâmica folicular ovariana, sincronizando periodos de paricao e melhor organizacao do rebanho. O objetivo desse trabalho foi analisar a eficiencia do uso do dispositivo a base de progesterona de multiuso de 3o uso e monodose, em novilhas da raca nelore. Foram separados dois grupos de novilhas, sendo que um grupo utilizou-se implante monodose e outro grupo implante multidose (3o uso). Verificou-se que os animais protocolados com implante monodose apresentou resultado superior.

Um dos principais fatores que afeta a produtividade da bovinocultura e a baixa eficiencia reprodutiva nos rebanhos brasileiros. Nos ultimos anos a utilizacao da tecnica de inseminacao artificial em tempo fixo (IATF) vem ganhando destaque por apresentar solucoes para esse problema. A utilizacao desta biotecnologia garante resultados satisfatorios quanto a taxa de prenhez e a eficiencia reprodutiva dos rebanhos, recentemente diversos estudos tem demonstrado que vacas ciclicas apresentam maiores taxas de prenhez na IATF. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da ciclicidade apos IATF em femeas ciclica e aciclicas, utilizando 215 femeas multiparas da raca Nelore onde, apos a avaliacao da dinâmica folicular, foram classificadas como ciclicas (presenca de corpo luteo) e aciclicas (ausencia de corpo luteo). Verificou-se que as femeas ciclicas tiveram maior taxa de prenhez em relacao aos animais que se encontravam em anestro pos-parto, tanto no protocolo de IATF quanto ao final da estacao de monta com repasse com touros.

The study evaluated the effect of exogenous melatonin and the induction of hyperprolactinemia on estrogen, prolactin and progesterone levels, implantation sites and expression of Mel1a and PRL-II receptors in pinealectomized rats ovaries, during the third Initial pregnancy. We Used 35 rats divided into groups: I-rats Sham-pinealectomized (Sham); II – pinealectomized rats (P); III-pinealectomized rats treated with melatonin (P + Honey); IV-pinealectomized rats treated with domperidone (P + Domp); Pinealectomized V-rats treated with melatonin and domperidone (P + Honey/Domp); VI-rats treated with saline + ethanol (placebo honey) and VII-rats treated with saline solution (placebo domp). Melatonin (200μg/100g) and/or Domperidone (4mg/kg) was applied until the 7th day of gestation. The expression of the MEL1A receptor was low in the ovaries of rats P and P + Mel. The PRL-II receptor did not present differences between the groups as well as in the estrogen levels. Prolactin levels were elevated in rats treated with domperidone, while progesterone showed low levels in rats P and P + Domp. The weight and number of implantation sites were reduced in rats P and P + Mel, with no alteration in the weight of the ovaries. Thus, it is concluded that Hyperprolactinemia promotes an increase in the expression of the Mel1a receptor in the ovaries, at the beginning of pregnancy in pinealectomized rats, however without altering the expression of the PRLII receptor. In These animals, prolactin levels were kept elevated regardless of the presence or absence of melatonin, but there seems to be a synergistic effect when melatonin is associated with hyperprolactinemia and that melatonin is a preponderant factor for Maintenance of progesterone levels. Prolactin seems to play an important role during the implantation process.

O corpo adiposo da bochecha é uma massa tubular de gordura localizado no espaço bucal, entre os músculos masseter e o bucinador, auxiliando nos processos de sucção e mastigação, além de desempenhar uma função protetora de algumas estruturas da face. Devido à sua rica vascularização, tamanho semelhante em todos os indivíduos, fácil acesso e pequena taxa de complicações, é usado para vários fins terapêuticos. Açaí fruit is rich on polyphenolic components but no studies have been carried out to evaluate their effect in meat products. The objective was to investigate the effect of açaí extract on refrigerated pork patties quality. Five treatments were done: without antioxidant (CON), Sodium Erythorbate 500 mg.kg −1 (ERY), Açaí Extract: 250 (AEL), 500 (AEM), 750 mg.kg −1 (AEH). Açaí extract did not affect the proximate composition, pH and cooking parameters. The concentrations of açaí extract studied increased antioxidant activity and reduced lipid oxidation (0.379, 0.293, and 0.217 vs. 0.889 mg MDA.kg−1 for AEL, AEM, AEH vs. CON, respectively). However, only the AEL treatment did not affect the color parameters, showing the best option for the application on pork patties. Thus, açaí extract at 250 mg.kg−1 can be used as a natural antioxidant replacing sodium erythorbate to preserve the quality of refrigerated pork patties. The phenolic profile and antioxidant activity (AOX) of “organic vs. conventional” Brazilian wines and grape juices were analyzed. A simple method for the determination of minerals Cu, Fe and Mn by F-AAS was validated and used to characterize the samples studied. In the validation of the Cu, Fe and Mn determination method, the protocol for samples preparation by hot digestion with HNO3 + H2O2 proved to be more suitable for the grape juice and wine matrices. The validation parameters were considered satisfactory. Conventional products presented higher anthocyanins content, and no significant differences were observed on other phenolic compounds, AOX and Cu, Fe and Mn minerals. All the evaluated samples presented similar results between the same cultivars and in products from grapes of the two cultivation systems. The AOX of juices and wines, organic and conventional, was high, and correlated with procyanidin B1, petunidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3,5-diglucoside.

Summary Objective We analyzed the serum vitamin D concentrations and identified the factors associated with vitamin D deficiency in Brazilian pregnant women, in a city with a high solar exposure. Methods Cross-sectional study with a sample of 190 pregnant women in a municipality in the Brazilian state of Bahia. Socio-environmental information, regarding the lifestyle and biological factors of participants, was collected and recorded in a questionnaire, and serum concentrations of 25(OH)D was determined (PR). Results The deficient and insufficient vitamin D concentrations were found in 14.21% and 44.74% of the pregnant women, respectively. Vitamin D deficiency was associated with commuting to work via motor vehicles (PR: 2.79; 95% CI: 1.06–7.31), with winter (prevalence ratio – PR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.01–2.35), exposure to the sun only on the face and hands (PR: 2.99; 95% CI: 1.35–6.63) and single pregnant women (PR: 2.53; 95% CI: 1.01–6.35). Conclusions We detected a high proportion of pregnant women with vitamin deficient and insufficient vitamin D levels among pregnant women of a sunny city. These data suggest the necessity to monitor serum vitamin D levels during pregnancy and the adequate orientation in prenatal care to adoption healthy lifestyle for the prevention of vitamin D deficiency in this population.

This study assessed the antagonistic activity of fruit-derived lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains against food-related bacteria and the effects of the highest organic acids LAB producers on the survival of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Enteritidis PT4 in cheese and chicken meat, respectively. The production of organic acids by the Lactobacillus strains in the tested food matrices was also monitored. All tested LAB strains showed antagonistic activity in vitro on the growth of pathogenic or spoiling food-related bacteria, particularly on L. monocytogenes and/or S. Enteritidis PT4, through the action of non-proteinaceous substances. The highest amounts of acetic and lactic acid were detected in cell free culture supernatants of L. paracasei 108 and L. plantarum 201. In “Minas Frescal” cheese, L. plantarum 49 and L. paracasei 108 decreased the counts of L. monocytogenes, and L. plantarum 201 showed bacteriostatic effects on this pathogen over time. L. paracasei 108 decreased the counts of S. Enteritidis PT4 in ground chicken breast; L. plantarum 49 and L. plantarum 201 failed to decrease the counts of this pathogen. Decreases in counts of L. monocytogenes or S. Enteritidis in “Minas Frescal” cheese and ground chicken breast, respectively, were related with increases in lactic and acetic acid contents and decreases in pH values. L. plantarum 49 and L. paracasei 108 could be used as biopreservation tools in cheese and chicken breast meat, respectively.

O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar o serviço farmacêutico de rastreamento em saúde da síndrome metabólica (SM) em servidores de uma Universidade Pública em Belém-PA. O estudo foi descritivo transversal, composto por servidores de ambos os sexos com idade entre 20 e 74 anos, a partir da coleta dos dados sociodemográficos, cardiometabólicos e aferição da circunferência abdominal (CA) para avaliação da obesidade central (OC). Caracterizou-se a SM pela agregação de pelo menos 3/5 componentes, que são: hiperglicemia em jejum, hipertrigliceridemia, hipolipidemia de lipoproteína de alta densidade (HDL-c), hipertensão arterial e OC. Para a análise estatística utilizou-se o software GraphPad Prism® - 5.00-Windows, com o Coeficiente de Correlação de Pearson para análise amostral; teste Qui-quadrado para análise da presença/ausência da SM x estratos de Framingham; Teste Exato de Fisher para avaliar o risco relativo. Os resultados apontaram idade média de 46±13 anos e a maioria de mulheres (60,4%) dentro da amostra de 91 servidores. Three sauces with macauba pulp were formulated: i) without gum (SWG); ii) with xanthan gum (SXG); and iii) with gum arabic (SAG). The sauces were stored in glass and polypropylene (PP) in a refrigerator at 5 °C. Macauba pulp has 26.19% lipids, 68.76% oleic acid, 9.03% linoleic acid and 40% dietary fibers. Flavanols such as catechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin gallate and procyanidin B2 were predominant, which contributes to the antioxidant activity. The sauces had a high fiber content (10%) and low fat content (6%), with an intense yellow color due to the carotenoid content. The sauces showed non-Newtonian behavior with stability influenced by the storage temperature. The SXG stored in PP bottles showed the highest stability (100%) for 28 days of storage at 5 °C. SGA showed lower peroxide value in PP bottles at 5 °C and was preferred by the tasters. Macauba pulp is an alternative base ingredient for formulating sauces.

Objetivo: identificar as evidências científicas sobre estratégias desenvolvidas por enfermeiros para a promoção de boas práticas no preparo e administração de medicamentos visando a segurança medicamentosa do paciente. Método: Trata-se de estudo de revisão integrativa, o qual buscou responder a seguinte questão norteadora: Quais as evidências disponíveis na literatura sobre as estratégias de Enfermeiros para a promoção de boas práticas no preparo e administração de medicamentos? Resultados: dentre os nove artigos selecionados, a maioria foram publicadas em português e tiveram sua origem no Brasil, o que pode ser consequência das políticas públicas de saúde inclusas no Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), dentre elas o Programa Nacional de Segurança do Paciente, que vem sendo intensamente institucionalizado, como ferramenta de gestão da qualidade, nos serviços de saúde mediante as metas de segurança do paciente. Quanto aos níveis de evidência verificou-se a predominância de estudos de nível VI com enfoque em estudos descritivos não experimentais diante da temática. Conclusão: evidenciamos que apesar de poucas produções identificadas, estratégias educativas e tecnologias em saúde estão sendo utilizadas e tendo significância para a promoção da meta de segurança do paciente. Espera-se que esta revisão venha contribuir com a prática clínica de enfermeiros e possa fomentar o desenvolvimento de novos estudos acerca da temática.

The use of ultrasound treatment for improving the bioactive compounds and quality properties of a Brazilian nopal beverage was studied. Physicochemical characterization and possible changes in nutritional, microbiological, and sensory parameters throughout the shelf-life were evaluated, and compared with heat treatment. Five products were prepared and analyzed during 28 days of shelf-life: control without treatment (C0), beverage submitted to heat treatment for 10 min (HP10), and beverages submitted to ultrasound treatment for 10 (US10), 20 (US20), and 40 (US40) min, with these times being defined based on a previously conducted pilot study. The US40 beverage presented the highest levels of oligosaccharides (31.99%), organic (48.93%) and ascorbic (26.09%) acids, and minerals (83.59%) compared to those found for HP10. The US40 also showed better antioxidant activity and 81.80% more phenolic compounds when compared with the HP10. The US40 presented greater stability for bioactive compounds and showed fewer changes in the color parameters, lower microorganism count, and greater acceptability regarding quality during shelf-life, while the HP10 sample presented the worst results. Therefore, the US40 beverage has higher functional potential, and ultrasound represents a promising technique to preserve or improve the quality of this product during its processing and shelf-life.

This study aims to review and synthesize scientific evidence to assess the association between excess body weight and depression among adults.The systematic research of observational studies was held from January to March 2015 on Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, PsycInfo, Psicodoc, Psycarticles, and Isi Web. A prevalence ratio (PR) was adopted as a summary measurement. All articles were evaluated for methodological quality and risk of bias. Metaregression was used to investigate heterogeneity and to identify the variation between the studies in relation to the estimates of the effects.In this review, 9 studies (N = 171,701) met the inclusion criteria. All articles obtained adequate methodological quality. Most studies had high or unclear risk of bias. Overweight and obesity were assessed by body mass index. People with obesity were 32% more likely to have depression compared to those who were eutrophic (PR = 1.32; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.26-1.38). After a gender analysis, the results showed statistically significant differences in obese versus eutrophic women (PR = 1.36; 95% CI, 1.28-1.34).There is consistent evidence that overweight or obesity was associated with depression.

The prebiotic effects of a cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale L.) agro-industrial byproduct powder (CAP) on different potentially probiotic Lactobacillus strains, namely Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-05, Lactobacillus casei L-26 and Lactobacillus paracasei L-10, were assessed using in vitro experimental models. Accordingly, the growth of the Lactobacillus strains when cultivated in a broth containing CAP (20 or 30 g L-1 ), glucose (20 g L-1 ) or fructooligosaccharides (FOS) (20 g L-1 ) was monitored over 48 h; the prebiotic activity scores of CAP were determined; and the changes in pH values, production of organic acids and consumption of sugars in growth media were verified.; Results: During the 48-h cultivation, similar viable cell counts were observed for the Lactobacillus strains grown in the different media tested. The CAP presented positive prebiotic activity scores toward all the tested Lactobacillus strains, indicating a desirable selective fermentable activity relative to enteric organisms. The cultivation of the Lactobacillus strains in broth containing glucose, FOS or CAP resulted in high viable cell counts, a decreased pH, the production of organic acids and the consumption of sugars over time, revealing intense bacterial metabolic activity.; Conclusion: The CAP exerts potential prebiotic effects on different potentially probiotic Lactobacillus strains and should be an added-value ingredient for the food industry. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.; © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.
