Abstract In the realm of intelligent healthcare, there is a growing ambition to reshape medical services through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). However, conventional machine learning faces inherent challenges such as privacy issues, delayed updates, and protracted training times, particularly due to the hesitance of medical institutions to directly share sensitive data, with possible noises. In response to these concerns, a Quantum-Assisted Federated Intelligent Diagnosis Algorithm ( $$\beta $$ β -QuAFIDA) is proposed, applied into real medical data. Leveraging the capabilities of the 5G mobile network, this approach works the connection between Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) devices through the 5G, synchronizing training and updating the server model without disrupting their real-world applications. In our quest to safeguard patient data and enhance training efficiency, our study employs an innovative heuristic approach marked by a nested loop structure. Specifically, the inner loop is dedicated to training the beta-variational quantum eigensolver ( $$\beta $$ β -VQE) to approximate the expectation values of the proposed algorithm; the outer loop trains the $$\beta $$ β -QuAFIDA to reduce the relative entropy towards the target. This approach involves a balance between privacy considerations and the urgency of training. Results demonstrate that representations with low-rank attained through $$\beta $$ β -QuAFIDA offer an effective approach for acquiring low-rank states. This research signifies a step forward in the synergy between AI and 5G technologies, presenting a novel avenue for the advancement of intelligent healthcare.

Introduction: Sarcopenia is a loss of muscle mass and function that affects the elderly and impairs their quality of life. Objective: To establish the association between sarcopenia, health habits, lifestyles, and comorbidities in older adults. Methods: Adopting a quantitative, descriptive-correlational, and observational cross-sectional design, the research involved 65 participants aged over 60 (71.83±7.31). To assess health habits, lifestyles, and comorbidities, questionnaires addressed alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity levels, sedentary behavior, and history of peripheral vascular disease, acute myocardial infarction, type 2 diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and pain. Sarcopenia was evaluated using criteria from the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2). Chi-Square test was used to associate the presence of sarcopenia with health habits, lifestyles, and comorbidities. Results: Revealed a significant association between sarcopenia and type 2 diabetes mellitus (p= 0.002), physical activity level (p= 0.004), and sedentary behavior (p= 0.001). Conversely, no significant associations were found between sarcopenia and acute myocardial infarction (p= 0.356), peripheral vascular disease (p= 0.098), high blood pressure (p= 0.724), hypercholesterolemia (p= 0.653), smoking habit (p= 0.267), alcohol consumption (p= 0.674), upper limb pain (p= 0.343), lower limb pain (p= 0.260), or spine pain (p= 0.418). Conclusions: That there is a significant association between sarcopenia and diabetes mellitus type 2, physical inactivity, and sedentary behavior in older people.

Background: Gold nanoparticles can generate heat upon exposure to radiation due to their plasmonic properties, which depend on particle size and shape. This enables precise control over the release of active substances from polymeric pharmaceutical formulations, minimizing side effects and premature release. The technology of 3D printing, especially vat photopolymerization, is valuable for integrating nanoparticles into complex formulations. Method: This study aimed to incorporate gold nanospheres (AuNSs) and nanorods (AuNRs) into polymeric matrices using vat photopolymerization, allowing for controlled drug release with exposure to 532 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths. Results: The AuNSs (27 nm) responded to 532 nm and the NRs (60 nm length, 10 nm width) responded to 1064 nm. Niclosamide was used as the drug model. Ternary blends of Polyethylene Glycol Diacrylate 250 (PEGDA 250), Polyethylene Glycol 400 (PEG 400), and water were optimized using DesignExpert 11 software for controlled drug release upon specific wavelength exposure. Three matrices, selected based on solubility and printability, underwent rigorous characterization. Two materials achieved controlled drug release with specific wavelengths. Bilayer devices combining AuNSs and AuNRs demonstrated selective drug release based on irradiation wavelength. Conclusions: A pharmaceutical device was developed, capable of controlling drug release upon irradiation, with potential applications in treatments requiring delayed administration.

This study examined the relationships between diet quality, satisfaction with food-related life and life satisfaction in mother-adolescent dyads. The sample consisted of 470 mother-adolescent dyads in Temuco, Chile. Mothers and adolescents responded to the Adapted Healthy Eating Index, Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Satisfaction with Food-related Life scale. Data was analyzed using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Diet quality was associated with satisfaction with food-related life, which related to life satisfaction in mothers and adolescents. We did not find direct relationships between diet quality and life satisfaction for either dyad member. Adolescents’ diet quality negatively affected their mothers’ satisfaction with food-related life; adolescents’ food-related life was positively associated with their mothers’ life satisfaction. The mothers’ satisfaction with food-related life played a mediating role between their own diet quality and life satisfaction. Mothers and their adolescent children affect one another in their dietary patterns and life satisfaction. Child-to-mother influences on food-related experiences show that adolescents’ satisfaction with food-related life improves their own and their mothers’ life satisfaction. Interventions to promote healthy eating habits must be addressed to both mothers and their adolescent children.

Many drugs are promiscuous and bind to multiple targets. On the one hand, these targets may be linked to unwanted side effects, but on the other, they may achieve a combined desired effect (polypharmacology) or represent multiple diseases (drug repositioning). With the growth of 3D structures of drug-target complexes, it is today possible to study drug promiscuity at the structural level and to screen vast amounts of drug-target interactions to predict side effects, polypharmacological potential, and repositioning opportunities. Here, we pursue such an approach to identify drugs inactivating B-cells, whose dysregulation can function as a driver of autoimmune diseases. Screening over 500 kinases, we identified 22 candidate targets, whose knock out impeded the activation of B-cells. Among these 22 is the gene KDR, whose gene product VEGFR2 is a prominent cancer target with anti-VEGFR2 drugs on the market for over a decade. The main result of this paper is that structure-based drug repositioning for the identified kinase targets identified the cancer drug ibrutinib as micromolar VEGFR2 inhibitor with a very high therapeutic index in B-cell inactivation. These findings prove that ibrutinib is not only acting on the Bruton's tyrosine kinase BTK, against which it was designed. Instead, it may be a polypharmacological drug, which additionally targets angiogenesis via inhibition of VEGFR2. Therefore ibrutinib carries potential to treat other VEGFR2 associated disease. Structure-based drug repositioning explains ibrutinib's anti VEGFR2 action through the conservation of a specific pattern of interactions of the drug with BTK and VEGFR2. Overall, structure-based drug repositioning was able to predict these findings at a fraction of the time and cost of a conventional screen.

Gurltia paralysans and Aelurostrongylus abstrusus are neglected metastrongyloid nematode species which infect domestic and wild cats in South American countries and in Chile, but no epidemiological studies on concomitant infections have been conducted in Chile so far. The aim of this study was not only to evaluate the occurrence of concomitant infections, but also to identify epidemiological risk factors associated with of G. paralysans and A. abstrusus infections in urban domestic cats (Felis catus) from Southern Chile. Blood samples from clinically healthy domestic cats from three cities of Southern Chile—Temuco, Valdivia, and Puerto Montt—were analyzed by an experimental semi-nested PCR protocol. A total of 171 apparently healthy domestic cats in Temuco (n = 68), Valdivia (n = 50), and Puerto Montt (n = 53) were sampled and analyzed. A total of 93 domestic cats (54.4%) were positive for G. paralysans, and 34 (19.9%) were positive for A. abstrusus infections. From those animals, 34 (19.9%) were co-infected. Cats positive with G. paralysans were found in all three cities; 47.2% in Puerto Montt, 48% in Valdivia, and 64.7% in Temuco. Levels of infection for A. abstrusus in the population under study were 4% (Valdivia), 10% (Puerto Montt), and 32.4% (Temuco). The present large-scale epidemiological study confirmed the presence of these neglected nematodes in domestic cat populations in Southern Chile, and described the possible risk factors associated with feline gurltiosis and aelurostrongylosis.

PDE3s belong to the phosphodiesterases family, where the PDE3A isoform is the major subtype in platelets involved in the cAMP regulation pathway of platelet aggregation. PDE3A inhibitors have been designed as potential antiplatelet agents. In this work, a homology model of PDE3A was developed and used to obtain the binding modes of bicyclic heteroaromatic pyridazinones and pyrazolones. Most of the studied compounds adopted similar orientations within the PDE3A active site, establishing hydrogen bonds with catalytic amino acids. Besides, the structure-activity relationship of the studied inhibitors was described by using a field-based 3D-QSAR method. Different structure alignment strategies were employed, including template-based and docking-based alignments. Adequate correlation models were obtained according to internal and external validations. In general, QSAR models revealed that steric and hydrophobic fields describe the different inhibitory activities of the compounds, where the hydrogen bond donor and acceptor fields have minor contributions. It should be stressed that structural elements of PDE3A inhibitors are reported here, through descriptions of their binding interactions and their differential affinities. In this sense, the present results could be useful in the future design of more specific and potent PDE3A inhibitors that may be used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Iron accumulation, oxidative stress and calcium signaling dysregulation are common pathognomonic signs of several neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson´s and Alzheimer's diseases, Friedreich ataxia and Huntington's disease. Given their therapeutic potential, the identification of multifunctional compounds that suppress these damaging features is highly desirable. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of N-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)propan-2-yl)-2-(7-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)acetamide, named CT51, which exhibited potent free radical neutralizing activity both in vitro and in cells. CT51 bound Fe2+ with high selectivity and Fe3+ with somewhat lower affinity. Cyclic voltammetric analysis revealed irreversible binding of Fe3+ to CT51, an important finding since stopping Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling in cells should prevent hydroxyl radical production resulting from the Fenton-Haber-Weiss cycle. When added to human neuroblastoma cells, CT51 freely permeated the cell membrane and distributed to both mitochondria and cytoplasm. Intracellularly, CT51 bound iron reversibly and protected against lipid peroxidation. Treatment of primary hippocampal neurons with CT51 reduced the sustained calcium release induced by an agonist of ryanodine receptor-calcium channels. These protective properties of CT51 on cellular function highlight its possible therapeutic use in diseases with significant oxidative, iron and calcium dysregulation.

La kinesioterapia respiratoria es ampliamente utilizada en la práctica clínica para el tratamiento de la neumonía, sin embargo, su efecto en niños con neumonia aún es controvertido. Utilizando la base de datos Epistemonikos, la cual es mantenida mediante búsquedas en 30 bases de datos, identificamos una revisión sistemática que incluye dos estudios aleatorizados pertinentes a la pregunta. Realizamos un metanálisis y tablas de resumen de los resultados utilizando el método GRADE. Concluimos que existe incertidumbre sobre si la kinesioterapia respiratoria tiene algún efecto sobre el tiempo de hospitalización, severidad y resolución clínica en niños con neumonía porque la certeza de la evidencia es muy baja.
