The purpose of this study was to identify the academic quality assurance practices that should be employed to attain teaching excellence at selected private higher education institutions in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The study adopted a qualitative interpretive research design and utilized one-to-one, in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 12 participants. The sample was purposefully selected and comprised six faculty members, four program directors, one senior academic staff member, and one junior non-academic administrator, from three private higher education institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Findings revealed four categories of practices: a) Must-keep practices, b) Must-modify practices, c) Must-add practices, and d) Must-avoid practices. Some of the practices relating to quality assurance that the study identified are maintaining important evaluation-related practices while providing feedback for improvement, closing the loop, educating all employees about and increasing their reengagement in quality assurance practice, and reducing paperwork and work duplication. This study concludes by recommending that higher education institutions employ the strategies discussed in the findings to promote teaching creativity and to improve the quality of teaching and learning, to achieve teaching excellence. https://doi.org/10.26803/ijlter.20.11.13

El artículo analiza el origen, razones y circunstancias que motivaron la creación del programa de la Licenciatura en Dirección de Empresas de Entretenimiento, dentro de la Facultad de Comunicación, en el marco de su 50 aniversario. Con una mirada hacia el pasado y presente, revisa las aportaciones que el programa ha hecho a la industria, a través de la formación de profesionales en entretenimiento. Inicia con una breve descripción sobre el entretenimiento en el siglo XXI y enfatiza las características del egresado de la licenciatura para, finalmente, ofrecer una radiografía tanto del programa como de la infraestructura tecnológica que ha hecho posible que esta licenciatura sea hoy –a casi 12 años de su apertura- uno de los programas más reconocidos en nuestro país por su calidad académica.

This scientific work outlines the obstacles facing Pesantren education in improving academic human beings' global-multicultural era. Pesantren global currents can cause paradox or symptoms of counter-morality. So does the pattern of life in the West, even significantly affect the moral decay, moral and human behavior. With this condition, the influence is considerable on human life, both physical and spiritual. Thus, Pesantren education faced various challenges with developing education models in the era of globalization implemented by community members, such as system problems, human resource problems, and curriculum development. Therefore, to improve the quality of academic humanity in the global-multicultural era, Pesantren have problems exploring all the resources they have. Because Pesantren education is less concerned with the situation, human resource problem, a strong influence of western culture in domination and imperialization of information, and the current culture of globalization can lead to paradox or symptoms of counter-morality. With this problem, a Pesantren can devote all the power, effort, and ability to innovate. Finding something new can help a student's life for the better. However, if Pesantren does not dig all his skills, he will be left behind by the ever-evolving era.

This paper discusses about strengthening the management of academic quality. Oneof the educational problems faced by the Indonesian, these are the low quality ofeducation at every level and unit of educations, especially at primary and mediumeducation. The various attempts have to improve the quality of national education,for instance: developing national or local curricula, increasing teacher’scompetences through training, procuring books and learning tools, improvingeducational facilities, infrastructures, and improving the quality of the school’smanagement. However, the indicators of the education’s quality do not show thesignificant improvement. Some schools, especially in cities show the quite encourageimprovements in the quality of education. But, part of them is still apprehensive,especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The teachers and education’smanagement have experiencesin many things.

Al-Qarawiyyin University's independence in terms of finances had been a significant and influential factor in making it possible for the university to maintain its high quality. Therefore, this paper aims to examine and analyse the financial sources for the development and operation of this university. It reviews and analyses historical data through relevant literature and documents. Waqf played a significant role in providing financial assistance to the university's communities and in strengthening its academic quality. There were four significant types of waqf sources which were the individual fund, the collective waqf fund, the Sultan fund and the alumni fund along with different other types of charities, i.e. sadaqah. This article adds new knowledge by examining the financing experiences of the world's oldest university. It is expected that the instance of Al-Qarawiyyin University may contribute to finding out a solution for the funding crises in contemporary institutions. This review is hoped to constitute a significant contribution to scholarship in general and act as a suggestion for solving the contemporary funding crisis of higher educational institutions. Ante la dificultad de los estudiantes de posgrado para afrontar la escritura de sus tesis –lo cual podría incidir en el desarrollo de la investigación y la calidad académica de los resultados condensados a través del proceso de producción de un manuscrito–, el Centro de Escritura (CE) de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana apoya la revisión de los trabajos en aspectos como: planeación del texto, estructura, citación y referenciación, estilo, pautas de revisión, entre otros. Se generan espacios de apropiación de la escritura de modo autónomo, así como estrategias de acompañamiento. Precisamente, en este artículo se presenta el análisis de dos casos de estudiantes de maestría que han recurrido a esta forma de tutoría, la cual es ofrecida por los profesores que forman parte del CE. Esta práctica involucra las dificultades asociadas con el proceso de escribir la tesis (el género como un problema, la falta de claridad y orden, el posicionamiento como autor, el estilo, la gramática, etcétera) y el impacto de este tipo de acompañamiento al tesista. Para ello, se realizó un estudio cualitativo de tipo descriptivo, en el que se entrevistaron a los estudiantes y se analizaron fragmentos de sus tesis. El análisis revela las dificultades y los bloqueos al escribir y la importancia de generar propuestas pedagógicas orientadas al andamiaje que puede brindar el tutor en el marco de un programa de apoyo a la escritura en el posgrado.

This paper supports the discussion of the concept of strengthening educational culture for managers of educational institutions. In this paper, a strategy to foster a culture of educa- tional quality is also examined so that the quality of madrasah education becomes better, both in terms of inputs, processes and results. The quality strategy in education in schools begins with a number of steps, namely (1) determining quality criteria, (2) building qual- ity commitments, (3) developing cultural quality, (4) developing the quality of educational services, and (5) improving the quality of school culture. The form of quality culture-based services can be done by improving academic quality that complements the developed competency standards, content standards, process standards, and adjusted standards. These four components, if implemented optimally, will be an indicator of descriptors of educational services in quality-based madrasas. Quality strategies in education services in madrasas need to start with a number of steps, namely (1) Find Support, (2) Support Support, (3) build a quality culture , (4) building the quality of education services, and (5) improving the quality of madrasa culture.

To be good a teacher, a teacher must incessantly improve her/his teaching practice and skill/knowledge to produce and keep the academic quality. Mechanically, a teacher requires to concern a particular method/ technique or strategy and use a certain tool/type to fulfill the benchamark of excellence in teaching. Hence, reflection is substantial as one of the indispensable approaches that can be practiced to direct teacher’s performance becomes more experienced. In teaching, the term reflection refers to the opportunity of teachers to think back critically after the teaching-learning process. Previous studies that have been conducted to observe the efficiency of teacher journal in the education field. Conversely, only a few kinds research explored teacher’s perceptions toward the utilization of the teacher’s journal. Likewise, this research was located in Indonesia and engage an in-service EFL teacher of Junior High School to accomplish the gap. It intended at determining the parts reflected from the teacher journal. Moreover, to investigate the research problems, the researcher used an in-depth interview to explore the teacher’s experience in utilizing teacher diary. Consequently, this study employed a qualitative method since it was considered as the appropriate design to accomplish the research. The researcher concluded that the teacher has a positive perceptions related to the teacher’s diary/teacher’s journal. It gives precious involvement for English teachers to be more experienced and professional to help students in mastering English skills and help the teacher to do reflection in order to make a better teaching practice for the next English teaching.

A cooperação científica internacional tornou-se um fator essencial para que os países emergentes alcancem novos patamares de pesquisa, publicações e financiamento. No contexto de uma discussão analítica sobre a cooperação científica global, foram analisadas as publicações brasileiras indexadas na Web of Science e a coautoria entre pesquisadores locais e estrangeiros, com o objetivo de ilustrar as mudanças ocorridas na medicina regenerativa nas duas últimas décadas. O artigo conclui que, na última década, expandiu-se a coautoria entre autores brasileiros e destes com autores de países desenvolvidos, especialmente com aqueles dos Estados Unidos, mas também, em menor grau, com os de outros países emergentes e da América Latina. Pesquisadores brasileiros também publicaram artigos de impacto global, indicando a qualidade atingida, no país, pela pesquisa científica na área. A análise mostra que a colaboração abriu portas, no âmbito global, para a pesquisa local, mas também que as assimetrias científicas se mantiveram ao longo do tempo.

Background The external academic accreditation is a quality assurance and auditing process that focuses on the structure, process, and outcome of the education. It is an interrupting and highly demanding process in terms of effort, time, financial, and human resources. However, it is unclear in the literature how much of these external quality assurance practices impeded in the accreditation processes would reflect on the other end of the learning pathway, including student satisfaction. Methods A retrospective quantitative secondary data analysis, with a before-after comparison research design, was performed to evaluate external accreditation’s impact on students’ mean satisfaction score within two accreditation cycles at King Saud University (KSU)-Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. Results The overall average students’ satisfaction scores pre-and-post the first accreditation cycle were 3.46/5 (±0.35), 3.71 (±0.39), respectively, with a P-value of P-value of 0.04. Compared to the first accreditation cycle, the improvement of the mean score of students’ satisfaction rates was not sustained beyond the year corresponding to the post-second accreditation cycle. Conclusion Both accreditation cycles were associated with an increased score in students’ satisfaction. The preparatory phase activities and navigation through the self-study assessment while challenging the program’s competencies are essential triggers for quality improvement practices associated with accreditation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors that influence internationally mobile students’ decision making regarding their choice to study in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Design/methodology/approach The existing literature on student motivation was examined, particularly factors relevant to the two key jurisdictions. Subsequently, a qualitative study was conducted to verify and expand upon these factors. Findings This study found a high degree of overlap between the two jurisdictions. However, Taiwan-based students emphasised elements such as the political climate, and the opinion of family, friends and peers, whereas academic quality and the perception of authority figures featured more for Hong Kong-based respondents. Practical implications The similarities and disparities between the two jurisdictions provide insights for decision makers, as well as avenues for further research. Originality/value This paper builds upon prior research into international student destination choice by exploring students’ decision-making process through qualitative research; thus, highlighting previously unexplored factors.

El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo principal determinar las expectativas laborales de los estudiantes de la carrera de Educación Inicial en la Universidad Metropolitana (Caracas-Venezuela) para contribuir al proceso de mejoramiento continuo de la calidad académica. Para ello se diseñó una investigación no experimental de tipo descriptivo conformada por dos variables: características de los estudiantes de educación superior y expectativas laborales. Tras la aplicación de una encuesta mixta (preguntas abiertas y cerradas) se analizaron los datos de manera cuantitativa y cualitativa. Los resultados más resaltantes señalaron el deseo de los sujetos de convertirse en agentes de cambio y desempeñar su rol docente (90,24%) a pesar de considerar que la carrera no es valorada por la sociedad venezolana, la mayoría de la muestra indicó que han desarrollado habilidades de sensibilidad social, fomentada directamente desde la Universidad Metropolitana y se mostró que el 47,62% como expectativa laboral principal a la Gerencia Educativa, lo cual pareciera indicar las altas expectativas laborales pues existe la proyección en el escalafón más alto de la jerarquía educativa. Se concluyó que estudiar las expectativas laborales de los estudiantes de educación superior contribuye al mejoramiento de los pensum de estudio lo cual se traduce en un mejor servicio y aumento de la calidad académica, en el marco que conocer la realidad del sector social-laboral en conjunto con los intereses, necesidades y expectativas de los sujetos, favorece la inserción en el mercado laboral.

Improvement of quality of education is a challenging task; however, it is not impossible. Measuring the performance of schools is not straightforward. In general, number of students passed in the examination in terms of percentage is considered as performance of the schools. Knowing the factors to determine the performance of schools provides some ideas on how to improve the quality of education. The paper, therefore, seeks to show factors that affect performance of the institutional school. The data were collected using structured questionnaires and interview from 90 respondents of Chitwan district, Nepal. The performance of the schools is measured in terms of per cent of students passed in school leaving certificate examination. Improvement in library and laboratory facilities, parents-teacher interactions, drinking water and toilet facilities compared to previous level, and academic quality perceived by teachers determine the performance of the school. Some levels of improvement in playground and sports materials have power to improve the performance of the schools.

Churches often validate their ministry training through Higher Education (HE) institutions in order to assure the academic quality of their awards. Although academic progress is carefully assessed, and churches have long debated formational aspects of ministry training, there has been little quantitative work that examines whether exposure to HE changes the faith of students. This study reports on the effects on various aspects of faith (such as beliefs about the Bible, biblical literalism, morality, exclusivity, quest orientation, and dogmatism) of a ministry programme delivered to Anglicans and Methodists that was validated by a United Kingdom university. A sample of 91 students completed questionnaires at the start and finish of their period of study, which ranged from one to three years. There was no evidence of systematic change in any of the tested variables that coincided with the period of study.

This article attempts to illustrate the definition of quality in higher education by using a literature research in four different aspects, including quality learner, quality environment, quality content, and academic quality. Several questions are then raised to consider further study in this area.

Since the founding of the University of Bologna in 1088, the quality and societal impact of university-based research has steadily risen and is widely expected to continually improve in the future. But, while the effectiveness of university teaching over this same period has improved through the adoption of laboratory instruction, the seminar method, tutorials, and more valid and reliable means of assessing students, the qualitative enhancement and continuous development of instruction compared to research appears less certain. Why does this difference exist? I will argue the cause is to be found in the limitations of universities’ traditional collegial culture and in the failure of recent national efforts to improve academic quality to effectively address academic norms and values.

Management is a process of activities that are planned and carried out intentionally and continuously to all students in the relevant educational institutions in order to be able to participate in the learning and teaching process effectively and efficiently. Learning achievement is the level of humanity students have in accepting, rejecting and assessing the information obtained in the teaching and learning process. A person's learning achievement is in accordance with the level of success of something in learning subject matter which is expressed in the form of grades or report cards for each field of study after experiencing the teaching and learning process. This study aims to determine the extent of implementation, acceptance, student management, efforts made, as well as the implications of the application of student management in At-Thiriiriah Junior High School in improving the quality of students. This study uses a qualitative approach using a type of case study research by taking a background in At-Thiriahah Junior High School, Gunung Bunder I, Pamijahan, Bogor. Data collection is done by interview, observation and documentation. Data analysis uses descriptive analysis method. Based on the process of data collection and data analysis, researchers can conclude several things including: (1) The application of student management that takes place at At-Thiriahah IT Junior High is classified as good, where the concept of student management starts from the planning and implementation of new students, monitoring or control and evaluation can be applied by all at IT Thohiriah Junior High School. (2) In an effort made by schools related to student management to improve the quality of students in At-Thiriahah Junior High School, among others: improving discipline including a). At-Thiriahah Junior High School students arrive at 07.00 WIB, b) Wearing Uniforms. (3) As for the implications of the implementation of student management to improve the quality of students in At-Thiriah Gunung Bunder I Junior High School, seen from the academic achievement in the form of UN scores that have increased, non-academic achievements achieved by At-Thiriahah IT Middle School students have also increased, and graduates of At-Thiriiriah IT Middle School were accepted into public and private schools. La necesidad de fortalecer la internacionalización de la educación superior en el Ecuador se convierte en una meta importante para poder mejorar la calidad académica , para la elaboración del artículo se ha utilizado una metodología explicativa y descriptiva, mediante las técnicas de recopilación de información en diferentes fuentes secundarias de informes y otros artículos, se trata de explicar como la internacionalización ha sido importante para el desarrollo de la educación en muchos países. Se da un vistazo a las formas que existen para la internacionalización de la educación superior y los retos a que se enfrentan, revisando las nuevas tendencias educativas que nos hacen ver como la internacionalización de la educación se ha convertido en una práctica para el crecimiento económico de muchos países y la importancia para fortalecer la calidad de la educación superior en el Ecuador.

The study explored the extent to which university students' approaches to learning (SAL) are related to their perceptions of the teaching-learning environment (TLE), both at the group level (between-student variation) and at the individual level (within-student variation). Moreover, the study explored how a general tendency to perceive the TLE in a certain way predicts course-specific approaches to learning over and above the course specific perceptions. The participants were 147 natural sciences undergraduate students. SAL and perceptions of the TLE were measured after five courses using the Learn questionnaire. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was used as the analysis method, which enabled us to test whether the relationships of the TLE and SAL variables were similar at the group and individual levels. For the most part, the relationships were similar but stronger at the group level; further, some of the within-student variation in SAL could be predicted by the group-level perceptions of the TLE.

This review X-rays the issue of illegitimate (predatory) academic publishing of books, monographs, journals and conference proceedings which is a topical issue globally as a result of the damage it does to academic quality and the society. It looks at the dilemma faced by researchers in developing countries in terms of publishing research results. It tries to give clear descriptions of the qualities of legitimate and illegitimate academic publishers and academic conference organizers. It suggests several solutions and protocols for addressing illegitimate publishing at the levels of individual researchers; institutions and learned societies; government and society; and international and regional groups with due attention paid to country-specific conditions and academic inequalities between the developed and developing world. Since the issue affects both researchers in developed and developing countries, a sustainable global action at the highest levels of government is advocated in the drive to reduce illegitimate academic publishing to the barest minimum globally.

The Technology of Orgasm by Rachel Maines is one of the most widely cited works on the history of sex and technology. Maines argues that Victorian physicians routinely used electromechanical vibrators to stimulate female patients to orgasm as a treatment for hysteria. She claims that physicians did not perceive the practice as sexual because it did not involve vaginal penetration. The vibrator was, according to Maines, a labor-saving technology to replace the well-established medical practice of clitoral massage for hysteria. This argument has been repeated almost verbatim in dozens of scholarly works, popular books and articles, a Broadway play, and a feature-length film. Although a few scholars have challenged parts of the book, no one has contested her central argument in the peer-reviewed literature. In this article, we carefully assess the sources cited in the book. We found no evidence in these sources that physicians ever used electromechanical vibrators to induce orgasms in female patients as a medical treatment. The success of Technology of Orgasm serves as a cautionary tale for how easily falsehoods can become embedded in the humanities.

This article addresses how the progressive development of a strong research evaluation system in Spain has affected research practices in two highly prestigious university departments in History. Our research finds that researchers perceive that evaluation mechanisms relying on bibliometric indicators pressure them to publish more and to publish in international indexed journals. Researchers feel the time available to develop their research before publishing their results has been reduced, which does not allow them to address research questions with the former rigour and to fully exploit information sources. The pressure is also perceived as an obstacle to conceiving long-term intellectual projects. The strong evaluation culture and its accompanying mechanisms are thus perceived as directly undermining the fundamental pillars on which the academic prestige of these departments was built, namely originality, scientific rigour and methodological innovations., The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness provided the funding to perform this research in the framework of the Spanish State Plan for R&D and as part of the project ‘Prest-Ence Spain: the Spanish University from Prestige to Excellence. Many Black parents consider racial climate and academic quality when thinking and making decisions about their children's schooling experiences. However, few studies have directly asked Black parents about the role they believe race will play in their children's schooling, if any. The authors interviewed 76 Black mothers (Mage = 34; SDage = 6.67) of children entering first grade (Mage = 6.13; SDage = 0.36), asking what role they believed race would play in their children's schooling. The authors found that mothers considered the racial composition of the school and the perspectives and behaviors of teachers and the administration to be important factors when assessing the role of race in their children's education. Mothers were also particularly concerned about the discrimination their sons may face because of their position as Black boys. Given these contextual factors, mothers considered themselves to be protective agents through their involvement in their children's academic lives.

Academic quality is defined as the equivalent to academic standards related to student learning outcomes, which consist of specific levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities achieved by students participating in a program. The achievement of academic standards is accommodated by implementing both internal and external quality assurance practices. Internal quality assurance refers to policies and practices used by the higher education institutions to monitor and improve the quality of their education, while external quality assurance refers to policies and practices set up by external parties to assure the quality of higher education institutions and programs. Petra Christian University has built and implemented its internal quality assurance since 2009 based on its unique quality culture. After its ten-year journey and the achievements that Petra Christian University has reached in 2019, the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0 are challenges ahead that Petra Christian University has to face.

The demand for higher education of all types has increased substantially around the world. This has motivated higher-education institutions to expand and improve their services by placing greater emphasis on academic quality and student experience in order to increase student retention and graduation rates. A growing number of educational institutions around the world have adopted undergraduate research because it has been shown to be a high-impact educational practice for students. However, there are many ways to utilize undergraduate research depending on several factors such as learning domain, academic discipline, and field of study as well as learning objectives sought. Therefore, there are different models of undergraduate research being used around the world by colleges and universities. As undergraduate research continues to become more international, higher-education institutions are learning from each other about how best to adopt it within their own institution.

Many universities around the world rely on student instructors—current bachelor’s and master’s degree students—for tutorial teaching, yet we know nothing about their effectiveness. In a setting with random assignment of instructors to students, we show that student instructors are almost as effective as senior instructors at improving their students’ short- and longer-run academic achievement and labor market outcomes. We find little heterogeneity across different course types, student characteristics, or instructors’ personal academic quality. Our results suggest that the use of student instructors can serve as an effective tool for universities to reduce their costs with negligible negative effects on students.

Los millennials, de acuerdo con United States Census Bureau (2016), representan más del 41% de la población mundial y en Colombia, según el Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE, 2016), representan el 40% de la población total.

The objective of the research is focused on the understanding of the effect of the improvement plans executed by the accreditation of Engineering careers under the SINEACE model in the perception of quality of the university service by using the Net Promoter Score as an indicator. An exploratory study was carried out in four consecutive years, which evidenced the satisfaction of educational quality by the students, before and after the accreditation process. The results obtained allow us to affirm that there was a significant increase in student satisfaction (P-value = 0.017), being possible to conclude that there is an effect of the processes implemented under the model of career accreditation and the satisfaction of students on academic quality.

Environmental forces influencing the future of higher education in the U.S. threaten to undermine the desirable role of faculty as arbiters of academic quality. For online learning to live up to its potential, institutional policies can return academic authority to faculty over degree programs in all modes and support the importance of education in promotion and tenure processes. Accreditation agencies traditionally have been a service to the institutions and the administration at higher education institutions; they will also have to become an equal service to the consumer of higher education. Consumerism will force all those concerned with the quality and utility of a higher education to focus on the quality and effectiveness of the instructors.

State merit aid programs have been found to reduce the likelihood that students attend college out of state. Using the U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) rankings of colleges and universities to measure college quality and Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System data to measure enrollment, we explore how this reduction in out-of-state enrollment differs by the academic quality of the institution. Our difference-in-differences results suggest that state merit aid programs do not induce students to forgo attending top 15 ranked schools. However, state merit aid does induce some students to forgo attending out-of-state schools ranked below the top 15 and shifts them toward lower quality in-state schools, so that the net effect is a reduction in academic quality, as measured by USNWR. These effects may have long-term implications for students' degree completion rates and labor market earnings.

If school choice programs are to provide any degree of equitable access to educational opportunities, then useful information about academic quality needs to be available to all participants, not just those who hob knob with the school board members or chat with the superintendent over the backyard fence. This study draws upon a unique data set to identify two information sources (parent websites and school choice enrollment guides) associated with low-income and minority families’ selection of higher quality schools in Denver. The study also highlights two types of information lacked by low-income and minority families who ended up selecting lower quality schools.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo identificar y analizar qué dimensiones se constituyen como factores de motivación o desmotivación hacia el aprendizaje, en la materia de Historia de segundo curso de Bachillerato, desde el punto de vista de los estudiantes. La información para responder a estas cuestiones surge de una línea de investigación iniciada hace más de dos décadas, desde cuyo marco se han realizado diversas recogidas de datos a través de cuestionarios a 1523 estudiantes de la Región de Murcia y entrevistas a 200 estudiantes de diferentes titulaciones universitarias, repartidos por las provincias de Alicante, Almería, Barcelona, Murcia y Sevilla. Los resultados indican una constancia a lo largo de los cursos y ponen de manifiesto una dimensión ligada a aspectos relacionales que contribuyen, en gran medida, a la motivación del alumnado hacia el aprendizaje de la Historia. Así, el clima del aula y el profesor se consideran agentes de motivación, sugiriendo que un profesor capaz de planificar, organizar y proponer tareas lejos de la metodología tradicional y más próximo a crear ambientes dinámicos, a través de actividades cooperativas en un clima de confianza, puede contribuir a fomentar el interés, enganchar y despertar el gusto por la Historia, así como aumentar la calidad académica.

Students at the University of Iceland report that the study of languages brings professional benefit. Many of them would like to increase their foreign language skills if that could be better built into their programs This is the result of a survey made by the Social Science Research Institute for the Faculty of Languages and Cultures. This paper points out that most faculties at the University of Iceland make it difficult or impossible to study a foreign language as a part of a degree program, even when the students are interested in such a combination and the benefit can easily be shown. The authors of this paper show that the funding structure of the University of Iceland directly prevents students from increasing and deepening their knowledge of regions, cultures and languages. The authors conclude that these limitations reduce the quality of the study programs at the University and that system change is necessary to enable students to build language skills into their professional training and academic study.

The present study aimed to explore the teaching quality of Greek accounting studies by examining the students’ experience from their accounting studies at higher education institutions (HEIs) in relation to demographic characteristics. An exploratory factor analysis, from a sample of 268 students’ questionnaires, identified four constructs, reflecting good teaching, generic skills, appropriate assessment and clear goals, and standards. The students’ scores on all scales showed satisfactory levels of internal consistency. A reduced version of the CEQ in Greek is proposed as a measure of students’ perceptions of the academic quality of programs in Greek higher education accounting studies, and its four dimensions are suggested as significant predictors of students’ satisfaction.

As the growth of online education offered by universities accelerates and spreads, universities are increasingly grappling with concerns related to widespread availability and the maintenance of academic quality. The Quality Matters at Southeastern Program fosters quality through a peer review process and offers a certification process to help assure quality in the Universitys online and blended course offerings. This report is a look at perceived impacts of the internal certification process by faculty.

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to measure the influence of six university qualities, namely academic quality, academic staff quality, management quality, industrial linkage quality and facilities’ quality, on students’ total experience (STE) and emotional attachment.Design/methodology/approach– Judgmental sampling is used to collect data from a sample of 489 undergraduate students of a private higher academic institution. The data are then analyzed using structural equation modeling.Findings– This study finds that only management quality forms a significant direct relationship with emotional attachment, whereas facility quality and industrial linkage form a significant relationship with emotional attachment only when mediated with STE.Originality/value– The results provide important findings to researchers and management of higher education institutions for future research directions.

By creating a program evaluation model that assesses multiple components from several perspectives, a social work division is able to determine the quality, effectiveness, and integrity of its offerings and support its mission to develop social work students for practice. This task is critical in supporting an off-campus program’s ability to navigate change and uncertainty in higher education. This research note discusses how a small, bachelor of social work program with a dual-delivery system (traditional and community-site) used the Council on Social Work Education reaccreditation process to adapt its program evaluation to ensure academic quality and program integrity during a period of rapid growth.

The UK has a longstanding and successful approach to expanding participation in higher education (HE) by students from under-served groups, whilst retaining academic quality. This has been achieved by focusing not just on who gains access to the academy, but also on ensuring their success within HE and beyond. This approach is explicit in the National Strategy for Access and Student Success, and the newly introduced Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), which in 2017 assessed and graded the teaching excellence of 295 higher education providers (HEPs). This chapter draws on two research projects focusing on widening participation (WP) and student success, which involved 21 HEPs, to explore the role of leadership in institutional change to promote diversity and success. The discussion is framed around Felten et al.’s action principles for leadership to improve the undergraduate experience (Felten et al., The undergraduate experience. Focusing institutions on what matters most. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2016), and the principles are extended to include further learning from these UK studies.

Esta investigación evalúa la evolución de la calidad académica de los programas de pregrado en economía en Colombia bajo el marco del sistema de acreditación de la educación superior. A partir del uso de los resultados de las pruebas Ecaes de 2004 y 2008, se encuentra que solo un número reducido de programas mejoraron su calidad entre los dos años, mientras que la mayoría de ellos han mantenido su calidad académica. Además, existe evidencia de que el proceso de acreditación de programas de pregrado tiene un efecto positivo en los resultados de las pruebas, pero principalmente aquellos programas que lo obtuvieron recientemente.

This study aims to obtain information about Teacher's Perception to increase of academic quality based of Management Information Systems at Elementary School 08 Batang Anai which is viewed from aspects: quality and management information system. This type of research is descriptive. The sample in this research were all teachers in SDN 08 Batang Anai, amounting to 11 peoples. Research method is qualitative descriptive. The data that has been collected by obsrvation and interview with the teachers and employee in that school. The result showed that: 1. Teacher's perception in improving the quality of education in SDN 08 Batang Anai is considered weak. The number of those who complained about being unable and lacking in expertise made the quality of education in these schools decline. 2. Teachers' perceptions in using the Management Information System in Schools are also considered weak. Some senior teachers who only rely on school operators make the information system not run smoothly as it should.

This discussion piece was prompted by arguments in the original submission, ‘If you can keep your head: The unintended consequences of the impact factor’. This short essay stresses that many academic institutions around the world rely too much on impact factors (IFs) as a sole indicator of research quality and impact. It argues that other indicators of quality and influence should also be used to measure an individual's academic success. Three primary outcomes may occur when impact factors are used as sole gauges of academic quality: stifling early-career researchers, constraining academic freedom, and curbing creativity and innovation.

The issue addressed by this article is whether there is an interaction between school ‘quality’ and students' socioeconomic status. That is, is a school that is of ‘high quality’ for high socioeconomic status students as effective for students from a low socioeconomic background? The answer is that a school that is of ‘high-quality’ benefits all students in terms of completion of Year 12, but more so for the most vulnerable of students: those who have low academic achievement at age 15 years in addition to coming from a low socioeconomic status background.

 Abstract—As digital learning continues to spread and gain in popularity and acceptance, it is essential for both the providers and the users to understand the factors that impact student satisfaction and performance in online courses.In this study student evaluation parameters from 93 online graduate courses with total of 4920 student enrolments were analyzed for their interdependences as well as their correlation with student performance measured through final grade distributions. The results show that student course satisfaction is strongly correlated with students' instructor satisfaction, while the students' course satisfaction is moderately correlated with student satisfaction with facilitators. There is a positive correlation between students' final grade distribution and their overall satisfaction with the course as well as between the students' final grade distribution and the satisfaction with the instructor. On the other hand, the correlation of the students' satisfaction with the facilitators did not have statistically significant correlation with the final grade distribution. The results point to the critical importance of the instructor of record in online courses and to the significant impact of the students' satisfaction with instructor's performance. Moreover, the same factors have statistically significant impact on the performance of students in the class, together with the student perception of the overall academic quality of the course. At the same time, the data show that facilitators have a significantly lower impact than the instructors to the students' overall educational experience in online courses.

SYNOPSIS Just as with executive compensation in the corporate environment, the pay of university presidents has come under scrutiny. In this study, we examine the link between the level of abnormal compensation for university presidents in the current period and the subsequent performance of the university. We find that private schools awarding “excess” compensation (relative to schools with similar characteristics) improve their reputation and resources to a greater extent in the next two years than private schools not awarding “excess” compensation. Our results suggest that some portion of what appears to be excess pay in private schools is related to differences in the president's ability to deliver performance changes that would be valued by the university's stakeholders. Specifically, we find that private schools reward improvements in academic quality, but do not reward improvements in the academic environment such as reductions in class size. Conversely, what appears to be excess compensation in public schools is not related to performance metrics that are commonly used by the business press to rank universities, suggesting that performance metrics differ significantly between private and public schools.

Colleges of education encompassed the production of professional teachers who are equipped with skills and methodologies of teaching in our primary and junior secondary levels of education in Nigeria. Essentially, colleges of education are to provide full-time courses in teaching, instruction and training and to conduct courses in education for qualified teachers. In order to achieve this objective, academic quality assurance is required. Against this background, the paper examines academic quality assurance and determines the general opinion on academic quality assurance in the colleges of education. It equally highlights some challenges to academic quality assurance in the colleges of education. Finally, the paper proffered some solution required by the colleges of education to stamp out the challenges for future development. Finally, the paper recommends that there should be regular monitoring and evaluation of all the units concern with the certification of colleges of education graduates. The fabric of higher education has changed dramatically in recent years with a sudden increase in the presence of part-time, nontenured faculty. Adjunct faculty have a significant presence in higher education institutions and need opportunities available to them so they feel like an important part of academic culture and are prepared to teach. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the similarities and differences in perceptions between three division chairpersons and 15 adjunct faculty members from three separate departments regarding teaching support, mentoring, and professional development opportunities at one community college. It was found that chairs and mentors appeared to be the most valuable individuals in supporting, acclimating, and retaining adjunct faculty according to the participants in this study. Without the roles chairs and mentors assumed, adjunct faculty could flounder and teaching quality could be hindered.

The creation of the AUN-QA was initiated in 1998 as a network of Chief Quality Officers (CQOs) appointed by the AUN member universities as the focal point for coordinating activities to realise the mission of harmonising educational standards and to seek continuous improvement of academic quality of universities in ASEAN. Since then, AUN-QA has been actively promoting, developing, and implementing quality assurance practices based on an empirical approach where quality assurance practices are shared, tested, evaluated and improved. AUN-QA assessment was inaugurated in December 2007. From 2007 to 2012, 16 AUN-QA assessments covering four countries, 7 universities and 37 programmes were carried out. These 37 programmes were assessed by AUN-QA assessors based on the 15 criteria of the AUN-QA Model at the programme level [1]. To assess the impact of AUN-QA assessments on the quality of educational programmes, an analysis of the results was made using medians and categories of criterion rated based on the AUN-QA Rating Scale. Based on the medians of the AUN-QA criterion rated at the programme level, the number of criteria rated “Better than Adequate” has increased from 1 in 2007 to 13 in 2012. This demonstrates that the quality of the assessed educational programmes at the participating universities has improved over the last 6 years. Recommendations to further improve the quality of the educational programme in the 15 criteria are made.
