At the heart of this sits the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) theory, which has been a remarkably successful contribution to the field of materials science. The BET method was developed in the 1930s for open surfaces but is now the most widely used metric for the estimation of surface areas of microand mesoporous materials. Despite its widespread use, the calculation of BET surface areas causes a spread in reported areas, resulting in reproducibility problems in both academia and industry. To prove this, for this analysis, 18 already-measured raw adsorption isotherms were provided to sixty-one labs, who were asked to calculate the corresponding BET areas. This roundrobin exercise resulted in a wide range of values. Here, the reproducibility of BET area determination from identical isotherms is demonstrated to be a largely ignored issue, raising critical concerns over the reliability of reported BET areas. To solve this major issue, a new computational approach to accurately and systematically determine the BET area of nanoporous materials is developed. We apply molecular simulations to screen a database of reported metal-organic framework structures from the computation-ready, experimental (CoRE) MOF database to identify materials potentially capable of separating propane and propene by diffusion. We report a screening workflow that uses descriptor analysis, conventional molecular dynamics (MD), and Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) energy barrier calculations at both classical force field and Density Functional Theory (DFT) levels. For the first time, the effects of framework flexibility on guest transport properties were fully considered in a screening process and led to the identification of candidate MOFs. The hits identified by this proof-of-concept workflow include ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 previously shown to have large differences in propane and propene diffusivities as well as two other materials that have not been tested experimentally yet. This work emphasises the importance of taking into account framework flexibility when studying guest transport in porous materials, demonstrates the potential of the data-driven identification of high-performance materials and highlights the ways of improving the predictive power of the screening workflow.

We present a new method of evolving crystal structures for crystal structure prediction. The method of chemically directed structure evolution uses chemical models to quantify the environment of atoms and vacancy sites in a crystal structure, with that information used to inform how to modify the structure to make a move on the potential energy surface. We have developed a method of chemically directed swapping, where we swap atoms in the least favourable chemical environments. This method has been implemented in the crystal structure prediction code ChemDASH (Chemically Directed Atom Swap Hopping), which explores the potential energy surface using a basin-hopping approach, and evaluates chemical environments using either the bond valence sum or electrostatic site potential. ChemDASH has a variety of methods of initialising structures, optimising structures, and swapping atoms. This gives ChemDASH the flexibility to be applied to a wide range of systems. We used ChemDASH to examine the effectiveness of the directed swapping method. Directed swapping finds the ground states of TiO2 and SrTiO3 faster than random (non-directed) swapping, but is less effective than random swapping for Y2Ti2O7.

Polymer photocatalysts are a synthetically diverse class of materials that can be used for the production of solar fuels such as H2, but the underlying mechanisms by which they operate are poorly understood. Time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy provides a powerful structure-specific probe of photogenerated species. Here we report the use of time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy to study the formation of polaron pairs and electron polarons in one of the most active linear polymer photocatalysts for H2 production, poly(dibenzo[b,d]thiophene sulfone), P10. We identify that polaron-pair formation prior to thermalization of the initially generated excited states is an important pathway for the generation of long-lived photoelectrons.

International audience; The thermal conductivity of crystalline materials cannot be arbitrarily low, as the intrinsic limit depends on the phonon dispersion. We used complementary strategies to suppress the contribution of the longitudinal and transverse phonons to heat transport in layered materials that contain different types of intrinsic chemical interfaces. BiOCl and Bi2O2Se encapsulate these design principles for longitudinal and transverse modes, respectively, and the bulk superlattice material Bi4O4SeCl2 combines these effects by ordering both interface types within its unit cell to reach an extremely low thermal conductivity of 0.1 watts per kelvin per meter at room temperature along its stacking direction. This value comes within a factor of four of the thermal conductivity of air. We demonstrated that chemical control of the spatial arrangement of distinct interfaces can synergically modify vibrational modes to minimize thermal conductivity.

We report the aperiodic titanate Ba10Y6Ti4O27 with a room‐temperature thermal conductivity that equals the lowest reported for an oxide. The structure is characterised by discontinuous occupancy modulation of each of the sites and can be considered as a quasicrystal. The resulting localisation of lattice vibrations suppresses phonon transport of heat. This new lead material for low‐thermal‐conductivity oxides is metastable and located within a quaternary phase field that has been previously explored. Its isolation thus requires a precisely defined synthetic protocol. The necessary narrowing of the search space for experimental investigation was achieved by evaluation of titanate crystal chemistry, prediction of unexplored structural motifs that would favour synthetically accessible new compositions, and assessment of their properties with machine‐learning models., Ba10Y6Ti4O27 has a complex aperiodic structure with the lowest thermal conductivity of any first‐transition‐series oxide. It is metastable, which makes it challenging to identify. Experimental exploration was focused sufficiently by structure prediction and property‐targeted machine learning to enable the isolation of this material (see picture), whose structural motifs provide new insight into the control of heat transport.

Lead-free silver–bismuth semiconductors have become increasingly popular materials for optoelectronic applications, building upon the success of lead halide perovskites. In these materials, charge-lattice couplings fundamentally determine charge transport, critically affecting device performance. In this study, we investigate the optoelectronic properties of the recently discovered lead-free semiconductor Cu2AgBiI6 using temperature-dependent photoluminescence, absorption, and optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. We report ultrafast charge-carrier localization effects, evident from sharp THz photoconductivity decays occurring within a few picoseconds after excitation and a rise in intensity with decreasing temperature of long-lived, highly Stokes-shifted photoluminescence. We conclude that charge carriers in Cu2AgBiI6 are subject to strong charge-lattice coupling. However, such small polarons still exhibit mobilities in excess of 1 cm2 V–1 s–1 at room temperature because of low energetic barriers to formation and transport. Together with a low exciton binding energy of ∼29 meV and a direct band gap near 2.1 eV, these findings highlight Cu2AgBiI6 as an attractive lead-free material for photovoltaic applications.

Mixed anion materials and anion doping are very promising strategies to improve solid-state electrolyte properties by enabling an optimized balance between good electrochemical stability and high ionic conductivity. In this work, we present the discovery of a novel lithium aluminum sulfide-chloride phase. The structure is strongly affected by the presence of chloride anions on the sulfur site, as this stabilizes a higher symmetry phase presenting a large degree of cationic site disorder, as well as disordered octahedral lithium vacancies, in comparison with Li-Al-S ternaries. The effect of disorder on the lithium conductivity properties was assessed by a combined experimental-theoretical approach. In particular, the conductivity is increased by a factor 103 compared to the pure sulfide phases. Although it remains moderate (10−6 S·cm-1), Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and Maximum Entropy (applied to neutron diffraction data) methods show that disorder leads to a 3D diffusion pathway, where Li atoms move thanks to a concerted mechanism. An understanding of the structure-property relationships is developed to determine the limiting factor governing lithium ion conductivity. This analysis, added to the strong step forward obtained in the determination of the dimensionality of diffusion paves the way for accessing even higher conductivity in materials comprising an hcp anion arrangement.

Energy-efficient approaches to propylene/propane separation such as molecular sieving are of considerable importance for the petrochemical industry. The metal organic framework NbOFFIVE-1-Ni adsorbs propylene but not propane at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, whereas the isostructural SIFSIX-3-Ni does not exclude propane under the same conditions. The static dimensions of the pore openings of both materials are too small to admit either guest, signalling the importance of host dynamics for guest entrance to and transport through the channels. We use ab initio calculations together with crystallographic and adsorption data to show that the dynamics of the two framework-forming units, polyatomic anions and pyrazines, govern both diffusion and separation. The guest diffusion occurs by opening of the flexible window formed by four pyrazines. In NbOFFIVE-1-Ni, (NbOF5)2− anion reorientation locates propane away from the window, which enhances propylene/propane separation., Porous materials acting as molecular sieves for propylene/propane separation are important for the petrochemical industry. Here the authors show an example of how specific guest-host interactions can result in structural changes in the porous host and shut down diffusion of one of the two similar guest molecules.

International audience; Multiple anion materials are of particular interest for the discovery of new crystal structures and offer an original way to modulate physical properties, including energy storage materials with enhanced performances. Through careful synthesis optimization, a new Na2Fe2OS2 phase was prepared by two different routes: high temperature solid-state synthesis and simple mechanochemical synthesis. The long-range and local structure of Na2Fe2OS2 was studied by Rietveld refinement of neutron and X-ray diffraction data combined with EXAFS data refinement. The phase comprises an amorphous and a crystalline part which has an anti-K2NiF4 structure, corresponding to the n = 1 member of the homologous anti-Ruddlesden–Popper [AX][ABX3]n series. Its electrochemical properties as a cathode material were studied in Na half cells and Na-ion full cells, revealing that the material becomes fully amorphous upon initial desodiation to Na0.5Fe2OS2, but maintains a reversible capacity of 135 mA h g−1 in full cells where up to 1.2 Na+ can be reversibly extracted and reinserted when compensating for the Na lost in SEI formation. The stability of the pristine material and its structural evolution upon charging are discussed, paving the way for further optimization of this material. Being composed exclusively of earth-abundant elements and stable under dry air, Na2Fe2OS2 perfectly illustrates the great opportunity of multiple anion chemistry to explore new structure types and develop better energy storage systems.

Mixed ionic-electronic conductors (MIECs) that display high oxide ion conductivity (σo ) and electronic conductivity (σe ) constitute an important family of electrocatalysts for a variety of applications including fuel cells and oxygen separation membranes. Often MIECs exhibit sufficient σe but inadequate σo . It has been a long-standing challenge to develop MIECs with both high σo and stability under device operation conditions. For example, the well-known perovskite oxide Ba0.5 Sr0.5 Co0.8 Fe0.2 O3- δ (BSCF) exhibits exceptional σo and electrocatalytic activity. The reactivity of BSCF with CO2 , however, limits its use in practical applications. Here, the perovskite oxide Bi0.15 Sr0.85 Co0.8 Fe0.2 O3- δ (BiSCF) is shown to exhibit not only exceptional bulk transport properties, with a σo among the highest for known MIECs, but also high CO2 tolerance. When used as an oxygen separation membrane, BiSCF displays high oxygen permeability comparable to that of BSCF and much higher stability under CO2 . The combination of high oxide transport properties and CO2 tolerance in a single-phase MIEC gives BiSCF a significant advantage over existing MIECs for practical applications.

International audience; With the goal of finding new lithium solid electrolytes by a combined computational–experimental method, the exploration of the Li–Al–O–S phase field resulted in the discovery of a new sulfide Li3AlS3. The structure of the new phase was determined through an approach combining synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction with 6Li and 27Al magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and revealed to be a highly ordered cationic polyhedral network within a sulfide anion hcp-type sublattice. The originality of the structure relies on the presence of Al2S6 repeating dimer units consisting of two edge-shared Al tetrahedra. We find that, in this structure type consisting of alternating tetrahedral layers with Li-only polyhedra layers, the formation of these dimers is constrained by the Al/S ratio of 1/3. Moreover, by comparing this structure to similar phases such as Li5AlS4 and Li4.4Al0.2Ge0.3S4 ((Al + Ge)/S = 1/4), we discovered that the AlS4 dimers not only influence atomic displacements and Li polyhedral distortions but also determine the overall Li polyhedral arrangement within the hcp lattice, leading to the presence of highly ordered vacancies in both the tetrahedral and Li-only layer. AC impedance measurements revealed a low lithium mobility, which is strongly impacted by the presence of ordered vacancies. Finally, a composition–structure–property relationship understanding was developed to explain the extent of lithium mobility in this structure type.

AgBiI4 powder, crystals, and polycrystalline films were synthesized by sealed tube solid state reactions, chemical vapor transport (CVT), and solution processing, respectively, and their structural, optical and electronic properties are reported. The structure of AgBiI4 is based unambiguously upon a cubic close packed iodide sublattice, but it presents an unusual crystallographic problem: we show that the reported structure, a cubic defect-spinel, cannot be distinguished from a metrically cubic layered structure analogous to CdCl2 using either powder or single crystal X-ray crystallography. In addition, we demonstrate the existence a noncubic CdCl2-type polymorph by isolation of nontwinned single crystals. The indirect optical band gap of AgBiI4 is measured to be 1.63(1) eV, comparable to the indirect band gap of 1.69(1) eV measured for BiI3 and smaller than that reported for other bismuth halides, suggesting that structures with a close-packed iodide sublattice may give narrower band gaps than those with...

Highly dense CaMn1-xRexO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) samples were prepared by solid-state synthesis. The effect of Re doping was assessed by the characterisation of crystal structure, oxygen content, and electrical and thermal transport properties. The oxidation state of the substituted Re was determined by X-ray absorption near edge spectra to be Re7+, and led to expansion of the lattice and an increase in electron carrier concentration due to the formation of Mn3+. The thermal behaviour of the electrical conductivity and the thermopower over a wide temperature range allowed identification of different conduction mechanisms: (1) below 110 K, 3D variable range hopping, (2) between 110 and 650 K, small polaron transport, and (3) above 650 K, activation of carriers over a mobility edge. Evaluation of the power factor expected for different dopant oxidation states as a function of dopant concentration shows that the doping strategy using a heavy heptavalent ion allows accessibility of the peak power factor at lower dopant concentrations, lowering the amount of non-ionised impurities, and therefore improves the electronic substitution efficiency, the ratio of activated carriers over the nominal doping concentration, compared to previously studied dopants. An increased power factor and a reduced lattice thermal conductivity are obtained with a peak figure of merit ZT = 0.16(3) at 947 K for CaMn0.98Re0.02O3. This is an approximately two-fold increase compared to undoped CaMnO3, and is comparable to the highest values reported for highly dense B-site doped CaMnO3.

Phonon-glass electron-crystal (PGEC) behaviour is realised in La0.5Na0.5Ti1-xNbxO3 thermoelectric oxides. The vibrational disorder imposed by the presence of both La3+ and Na+ cations on the A site of the ABO(3) perovskite oxide La0.5Na0.5TiO3 produces a phononglass with a thermal conductivity, kappa, 80% lower than that of SrTiO3 at room temperature. Unlike other state-of-the-art thermoelectric oxides, where there is strong coupling of kappa to the electronic power factor, the electronic transport of these materials can be optimised independently of the thermal transport through cation substitution at the octahedral B site. The low kappa of the phonon-glass parent is retained across the La0.5Na0.5Ti1-xNbxO3 series without disrupting the electronic conductivity, affording PGEC behaviour in oxides.

A new porous and flexible metal–organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized from the flexible asymmetric linker N-(4-carboxyphenyl)succinamate (CSA) and heptanuclear zinc oxo-clusters of formula [Zn7O2(carboxylate)10DMF2] involving two coordinated terminal DMF ligands. The structural response of this MOF to the removal or exchange of its guest molecules has been probed using a combination of experimental and computational approaches. The topology of the material, involving double linker connections in the a and b directions and single linker connections along the c axis, is shown to be key in the material’s anisotropic response. The a and b directions remain locked during guest removal, whereas the c axis linker undergoes large changes significantly reducing the material’s void space. The changes to the c axis linker involve a combination of a hinge motion on the linker’s rigid side and conformational rearrangements on its flexible end, which were probed in detail during this process despite the presence of crystallographic disorder along this axis, which prevented accurate characterization by experimental methods alone. Although inactive during guest removal, the flexible ends of the a and b axis linkers are observed to play a prominent role during DMF to DMSO solvent exchange, facilitating the exchange reaction arising in the cluster., The synthesis and flexibility of a new zinc-carboxylate MOF (ZnCSA) is reported via a combination of crystallographic and computational approaches. The anisotropic structural response exhibited during exchange or removal of the guest species in the pore reveals that the behavior is linked to both the framework’s topology and the nature of the asymmetric flexible linker used in its construction.

SPIONs consisting predominantly of magnetite or maghemite display distinct chemical stability in solution but equivalent imaging properties when in cells., Although there is extensive literature covering the biomedical applications of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), the phase of the iron oxide core used is not often taken into account when cell labelling and tracking studies for regenerative medicine are considered. Here, we use a co-precipitation reaction to synthesise particles of both magnetite- (Fe3O4) and maghemite- (γ-Fe2O3) based cores and consider whether the extra synthesis step to make maghemite based particles is advantageous for cell tracking.

Tilting toward two properties Opposing electronic and symmetry constraints can make it difficult to combine some pairs of material properties in a single crystalline material. Magnetization and electrical polarization are such a pair, but their combination could be useful for applications such as magnetoelectric information storage. Pitcher et al. now show that careful design of chemical substitutions in a layered perovskite are both electrically polar and weakly ferromagnetic at temperatures up to 330 K. Tracking stem cells in vivo using non-invasive techniques is critical to evaluate the efficacy and safety of stem cell therapies. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) enable cells to be tracked using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but to obtain detectable signal cells need to be labelled with a sufficient amount of iron oxide. For the majority of SPIONs, this can only be obtained with the use of transfection agents, which can adversely affect cell health. Here, we have synthesised a library of dextran-based polymer coated SPIONs with varying surface charge from -1.5 mV to +18.2 mV via a co-precipitation approach and investigated their ability to be directly internalised by stem cells without the need for transfection agents. The SPIONs were colloidally stable in physiological solutions. The crystalline phase of the particles was confirmed with powder X-ray diffraction and their magnetic properties were characterised using SQUID magnetometry and magnetic resonance. Increased surface charge led to six-fold increase in uptake of particles into stem cells and higher MRI contrast, with negligible change in cell viability. Cell tracking velocimetry was shown to be a more accurate method for predicting MRI contrast of stem cells compared to measuring iron oxide uptake through conventional bulk iron quantification.

The electrochemical performance of the layered perovskite YSr 2 Cu 3− x Co x O 7+ δ , a potential solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode, is improved by increasing the Co content from x = 1.00 to a maximum of x = 1.30. Single phase samples with x > 1.00 are obtained by tuning the Y/Sr ratio, yielding the composition Y 1− y Sr 2+ y Cu 3− x Co x O 7+ δ (where y ≤ 0.05). The high temperature structure of Y 0.95 Sr 2.05 Cu 1.7 Co 1.3 O 7+ δ at 740 °C is characterised by powder neutron diffraction and the potential of this Co-enriched material as a SOFC cathode is investigated by combining AC impedance spectroscopy, four-probe DC conductivity and powder XRD measurements to determine its electrochemical properties along with its thermal stability and compatibility with a range of commercially available electrolytes. The material is shown to be compatible with doped ceria electrolytes at 900 °C.

Abstarct Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are network polymers with long-range positional order whose properties can be tuned using the isoreticular chemistry approach. Making COFs from strong bonds is challenging because irreversible rapid formation of the network produces amorphous materials with locked-in disorder. Reversibility in bond formation is essential to generate ordered networks, as it allows the error-checking that permits the network to crystallise, and so candidate network-forming chemistries such as amide that are irreversible under conventional low temperature bond-forming conditions have been underexplored. Here we show that we can prepare two- and three-dimensional covalent amide frameworks (CAFs) by devitrification of amorphous polyamide network polymers using high-temperature and high-pressure reaction conditions. In this way we have accessed reversible amide bond formation that allows crystalline order to develop. This strategy permits the direct synthesis of practically irreversible ordered amide networks that are stable thermally and under both strong acidic and basic hydrolytic conditions., Irreversible bond formation in covalent organic frameworks leads to amorphous materials. Here, the authors show that crystalline and ultra-stable covalent amide frameworks can be accessed by devitrification of amorphous polyamide networks.

Electrode materials for intermediate temperature (500–700 ∘C) solid oxide fuel cells require electrical and mechanical stability to maintain performance during the cell lifetime. This has proven difficult to achieve for many candidate cathode materials and their derivatives with good transport and electrocatalytic properties because of reactivity towards cell components, and the fuels and oxidants. Here we present Ba0.5Sr0.5(Co0.7Fe0.3)0.6875W0.3125O3−δ (BSCFW), a self-assembled composite prepared through simple solid state synthesis, consisting of B-site cation ordered double perovskite and disordered single perovskite oxide phases, as a candidate cathode material. These phases interact by dynamic compositional change at the operating temperature, promoting both chemical stability through the increased amount of W in the catalytically active single perovskite provided from the W-reservoir double perovskite, and microstructural stability through reduced sintering of the supported catalytically active phase. This interactive catalyst-support system enabled stable high electrochemical activity through the synergic integration of the distinct properties of the two phases. Electrodes of solid oxide fuel cells need to be stable during operation. Here, the authors use tungsten as a substituent to stabilize a perovskite oxide as a two-phase composite. The resulting material dynamically adjusts the phase compositions to keep a high catalytic activity at operation conditions.

Two new amide functionalised metal–organic frameworks, In(OH)CSA and In(OH)PDG, were synthesized using two flexible linkers, N-(4-carboxyphenyl)succinamic acid (CSA) and N,N′-(1,4-phenylenedicarbonyl)diglycine (PDG), respectively. Both structures consist of corner-sharing {InO4(OH)2} octahedra in the form of trans indium hydroxide chains, which are interconnected by the dicarboxylate linkers to form stacked 2-dimensional layers. The different symmetries and configurations of the flexible and rigid features on the linkers results in different supramolecular interactions dominating between linkers, resulting in different shaped pores and functional group orientation. In(OH)CSA lacks hydrogen bonding between linkers, which results in close packing between the layers and very small solvent accessible pores running perpendicular to the plane of the layers. In(OH)PDG exhibits strong intra- and interlayer hydrogen bonding, which prevents the layers from close packing and results in larger cylindrical pores running parallel to the indium hydroxide chains, producing a total accessible volume of 25% of the unit cell volume.

The Extended Module Materials Assembly computational method for structure solution and prediction has been implemented for close-packed lattices. Exploring the family of B-site deficient materials in hexagonal perovskite barium cobalt niobates, it is found that the EMMA procedure returns the experimental structures as the most stable for the known compositions of Ba3CoNb2O9, Ba5Nb4O15 and Ba8CoNb6O24. The unknown compositions Ba11Co2Nb8O33 and Ba13CoNb10O39, having longer stacking sequences, are predicted to form as intergrowths of Ba3CoNb2O9 and Ba5Nb4O15, and are found to have similar stability to pure Ba3CoNb2O9 and Ba5Nb4O15, indicating that it is likely they can be synthesised.

Correlated metallic transition metal oxides offer a route to thin film transparent conductors that is distinct from the degenerate doping of broadband wide gap semiconductors. In a correlated metal transparent conductor, interelectron repulsion shifts the plasma frequency out of the visible region to enhance optical transmission, while the high carrier density of a metal retains sufficient conductivity. By exploiting control of the filling, position, and width of the bands derived from the B site transition metal in ABO3 perovskite oxide films, it is shown that pulsed laser deposition-grown films of cubic SrMoO3 and orthorhombic CaMoO3 based on the second transition series cation 4d2 Mo4+ have superior transparent conductor properties to those of the first transition series 3d1 V4+-based SrVO3. The increased carrier concentration offered by the greater bandfilling in the molybdates gives higher conductivity while retaining sufficient correlation to keep the plasma edge below the visible region. The reduced binding energy of the n=4 frontier orbitals in the second transition series materials shifts the energies of oxide 2p to metal nd transitions into the near-ultraviolet to enhance visible transparency. The A site size-driven rotation of MoO6 octahedra in CaMoO3 optimizes the balance between plasma frequency and conductivity for transparent conductor performance.

Ruddlesden–Popper-type solid solutions PrSr3(Fe1–xCox)3O10−δ (x ≤ 0.60, δ < 0.10; space group I4/mmm) were synthesized, and their structural, electrical, and magnetic properties were investigated as a function of temperature (mostly subambient) by neutron powder diffraction (NPD), Mossbauer spectroscopy, electrical-conductivity, and magnetization measurements. For the parent phase (x = 0.00), cooling leads to a partial charge disproportionation of Fe4+, formation of an imperfect or short-range magnetic order (evidenced in Mossbauer spectra and discernible in NPD as weak and broad magnetic reflections), and a resistivity increase by orders of magnitude upon a succession of conduction mechanisms. Substitution of Fe by Co introduces ferromagnetic interactions that dramatically increase the conductivity. Cobalt and ruthenium-promoted cobalt Fischer–Tropsch catalysts supported on titania have been prepared for the first time by gas anti-solvent precipitation. The use of dense CO2 as an anti-solvent enables the precipitation of cobalt acetate and ruthenium acetylacetonate onto preformed titania. The gas anti-solvent process produces catalysts with the desired 20 wt % cobalt content as precursors, which on calcination give highly dispersed Co3O4. The addition of ruthenium to the gas anti-solvent prepared cobalt catalysts has been investigated by two methods (a) coprecipitation with cobalt acetate and (b) wet impregnation onto a precalcined cobalt titania catalyst, and these resulted in catalysts with distinctly different properties. These catalysts were compared with a standard ruthenium-promoted cobalt catalyst prepared by wet impregnation and were found to be substantially more active for the Fischer–Tropsch reaction.

The identification and contribution of the different phonons present in the G-line Raman response in Stage-1 and Stage-2 graphite intercalation compounds (GIC) is crucial for a correct stage determination. Different factors like laser induced de-intercalation play an important role in the precise stage assignment of these phases, and their intrinsic Raman response. In this contribution, an in situ micro-Raman analysis was conducted under high-vacuum conditions. Local heating of the samples was induced by using a high laser power (8.5 mW) in order to study the de-intercalation process from Stage-1 to Stage-2 GICs. A detailed Raman line-shape analysis was performed from the recorded spectra to determine the changes from the G-line response of KC8, CaC6, and LiC6. We confirmed the assignment of the broad E2g Fano mode at ∼1510 cm−1 to the intrinsic Stage-1 Raman response in GICs. Additionally, the most evident change from Stage-1 to Stage-2 was observed in an asymmetric Fano mode in the range of 1565–1610 cm−1. This mode is linked to the first-order stretching Raman mode of Graphite, which tends to increase in frequency and decrease in width as function of de-intercalation. Finally, the response of the Stage-2 phase after de-intercalation was confirmed to be a useful benchmark for the identification of the intercalation stage in highly doped GICs.

Despite significant structural rearrangement upon desolvation of a three-dimensional molecular framework of hexaaquacobalt cations and redox- active functionalized tetrathiafulvalene anions (see the picture; the area filled with water molecules is shown in gray), monocrystallinity and microporosity are retained. X-ray analyses show that a unique combination of hydrogen bonds and π ·· π interactions within the framework gives this material a structural flexibility not seen in zeolites or their analogues.

Ordering of the tetrahedral site vacancies in two crystals of refined compositions K0.93(1)Fe1.52(1)Se2 and K0.862(3)Fe1.563(4)Se2 produces a fivefold expansion of the parent ThCr2Si2 unit cell in the ab plane which can accommodate 20% vacancies on a single site within the square FeSe layer. The iron charge state is maintained close to +2 by coupling of the level of alkali metal and iron vacancies, producing a potential doping mechanism which can operate at both average and local structure levels., Comment: 5 pages 3 figures accepted for publication in Chemical Science Chem. The crystal structures of Sr2HoMn2O7 and Sr2YMn2O7 have been determined at 290 and 1.7 K from neutron and X-ray powder diffraction data. Both are distorted Ruddlesden−Popper structures formed by the intergrowth of rock-salt-like layers and perovskite-like blocks of tilted MnO6 octahedra (space group P42/mnm; for Ho at 290 K a = 5.40388(5), c = 19.9050(2) A). The majority of the lanthanide cations are located in the rock-salt layers. Neither structure changes significantly on cooling to 1.7 K. There is evidence for neither charge ordering of Mn3+ and Mn4+ cations nor for long-range magnetic ordering. The magnetic susceptibility maximum observed previously is thus confirmed as signifying a transition to a spin-glass phase. The behavior of these compounds is contrasted with that of other Mn oxides which show long-range magnetic order and colossal magnetoresistance.

The perovskite- and K2NiF4-structure group 5 oxynitrides SrTaO2N, BaTaO2N, Sr2TaO3N, and Ba2TaO3N, previously prepared by reacting oxide precursors with ammonia, may also be prepared by the reaction between the appropriate alkaline earth oxide and TaON at 1500°C under 1 atm of pure nitrogen gas for a few hours. The nitrogen atmosphere is essential to prevent reduction of TaV, and the method of inductive heating ensures that the nitrogen atmosphere above the sample is maintained free of oxygen or water. SrTaO2N crystallizes in I4/mcm with a = 5.694 11(7) Å, b = 8.0658(2) Å, and Z = 4. The oxide and nitride anions are almost completely disordered, as observed when the material is made by nitridation of a pure oxide precursor using ammonia at 900-1000°C, but contrasting with the full O/N order observed when such nitridation is mineralizer assisted. The detailed structure of Ba2TaO3N is reported for the first time: this compound adopts the K2NiF4 type structure with full O/N order in space group I4/mmm with a = 4.115 08(3) Å, c = 13.3778(1) Å, and Z = 2 and is isostructural with the strontium analogue (Sr2TaO3N: I4/mmm, a = 4.038 99(4) Å, c = 12.6007(3) Å, and Z = 2). O/N disorder is favored in perovskite-structure oxynitrides, but in layered K2NiF4-structure materials O/N ordering is the norm, with the ordering scheme dictated by the competition between cations of differing electronegativity for the anions.

We report on the results of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) studies at the Mn:L2,3, Ru:K and O:K edges of novel manganites, Sr2Mn0.5Ru0.5O4 and Sr3MnRuO7. Measurements were carried out on polycrystalline powder samples at room temperature. From the analysis of the XANES spectra the average manganese valences of 3.4 in bilayer Sr3MnRuO7 and 3.1 in single layer Sr2Mn0.5Ru0.5O4 are obtained. The corresponding average valences for Ru ions are 4.6 and 4.9, respectively. This indicates that Ru doping gives rise to a decrease of Mn valence, whereas Ru valence increases, compared to Mn(IV) and Ru(IV) in undoped compounds. The effect of charge disproportionation is stronger in the single layered compound than in the bilayered one. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Magnetotransport properties of the compound Ca4Mn3O10 are interpreted in terms of activated hopping of small magnetic polarons in the non-adiabatic regime. Polarons are most likely formed around Mn3+ sites created by oxygen substoichiometry. The application of an external field reduces the size of the magnetic contribution to the hopping barrier and thus produces an increase in the conductivity .We argue that the change in the effective activation energy around TN is due to the crossover to VRH conduction as antiferromagnetic order sets in., 29 pages, 7 figures

The crystal and magnetic structures of the n = 3 Ruddlesden−Popper phase with the ideal composition Ca4Mn3O10 have been studied using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. The crystal structure at 293 K is relatively insensitive to the partial pressure of oxygen used in sample preparation. A sample prepared in air showed an orthorhombic distortion (space group Pbca, a = 5.26557(12), b = 5.26039(11), c = 26.8276(5) A) from the ideal n = 3 RP structure, as did a sample prepared under 800 atm of O2 pressure (a = 5.26005(4), b = 5.25569(4), c = 26.83543(20) A). Both samples showed a magnetic phase transition at 115 K from a paramagnetic phase with extensive short-range spin ordering to a weakly ferromagnetic (μferro = 2 × 10-3 μB per Mn) low-temperature phase. The antiferromagnetic components of the atomic magnetic moments (2.23(2) μB per Mn) order in a G-type manner within each perovskite block, and the interblock coupling reflects the orthorhombic symmetry of the structure.

Gold and gold alloys, in the form of supported nanoparticles, have been shown over the last three decades to be highly effective oxidation catalysts. Mixed metal oxide perovskites, with their high structural tolerance, are ideal for investigating how changes in the chemical composition of supports affect the catalysts' properties, while retaining similar surface areas, morphologies and metal co-ordinations. However, a significant disadvantage of using perovskites as supports is their high crystallinity and small surface area. We report the use of a supercritical carbon dioxide anti-solvent precipitation methodology to prepare large surface area lanthanum based perovskites, making the deposition of 1 wt% AuPt nanoparticles feasible. These catalysts were used for the selective oxidation of glycerol. By changing the elemental composition of the perovskite B site, we dramatically altered the reaction pathway between a sequential oxidation route to glyceric or tartronic acid and a dehydration reaction pathway to lactic acid. Selectivity profiles were correlated to reported oxygen adsorption capacities of the perovskite supports and also to changes in the AuPt nanoparticle morphologies. Extended time on line analysis using the best oxidation catalyst (AuPt/LaMnO3) produced an exceptionally high tartronic acid yield. LaMnO3 produced from alternative preparation methods was found to have lower activities, but gave comparable selectivity profiles to that produced using the supercritical carbon dioxide anti-solvent precipitation methodology.

The coordination of benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoate (BTB) and imidazole (Im) with cobalt under basic conditions yields a 2D layered structure, Co 3 (BTB) 1.5 (Im) 1.35 (O) 0.5 (OH) 0.5 (H 2 O) 1.65 guests ( 1 ), in which the imidazoles are weakly π–π stacked and hydrogen bonded to the adjacent layers affording a 3D supramolecular network. The structure is based on a hexanuclear Co 6 building unit which comprises four octahedral and two tetrahedral Co(II) centres. The framework is permanently porous to N 2 , CO 2 and CH 4 , with the strength of interaction at zero coverage being comparable to that at high loading.

An 8-layer B-site deficient twinned hexagonal perovskite Ba8Ga4–xTa4+0.6xO24 has been synthesized and its structure and microwave dielectric properties characterized. This hexagonal perovskite consists of eight close-packed BaO3 layers stacked by a sequence of (ccch)2, where c and h refer to cubic and hexagonal BaO3 layers, respectively. The Ba8Ga4–xTa4+0.6xO24 ceramic materials exhibit composition-independent dielectric permittivity er ≈ 29, improved Qf value with the B-site vacancy content increase, and tunable temperature coefficient of resonant frequency τf from negative to positive. An optimum microwave dielectric performance was achieved for Ba8Ga0.8Ta5.92O24: Qf ≈ 29 000 GHz and τf ≈ 11 ppm/°C. The factors controlling the microwave dielectric properties are discussed in comparison with 8-layer twinned analogues and related 10-layer twinned hexagonal perovskites based on their structural and property data.

BACKGROUND: This research investigated the effect of platinum (Pt) on the reactivity of tungsten oxide (WO3) for the visible light photocatalytic oxidation of dyes. RESULTS: Nanocrystalline tungsten oxide (WO3) photocatalysts were synthesised by a sol-gel process and employed for the photocatalytic degradation of Methyl Orange under visible light. For comparison commercial bulk WO3 materials were also studied for the same reaction. These materials were fully characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic oxidation of iso-propanol was used as a model reaction to follow the concomitant reduction of molecular oxygen. No reactions occured in the absence of platinum, which is an essential co-catalyst for the multi-electron reduction of oxygen. The platinised WO3 catalysts were stable for multiple oxidation–reduction cycles. The results from the catalytic activity measurements showed that platinised nanocrystalline WO3 is a superior oxidation photocatalyst when compared with bulk WO3. Methyl Orange was completely decolourised in 4 h. CONCLUSIONS: The enhanced performance of nanocrystalline Pt-WO3 is attributed to improved charge separation in the nanosized photocatalyst. Platinum is an essential co-catalyst to reduce oxygen. This photocatalyst could be applied to the treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater, with the advantage of using visible light compared with the widely studied TiO2, which requires UV light. The (AO)(ABO3)n Ruddlesden-Popper structure is an archetypal complex oxide consisting of two distinct structural units, an (AO) rock salt layer separating an n-octahedra thick perovskite block. Conventional high-temperature oxide synthesis methods cannot access members with n > 3, but low-temperature layer-by-layer thin film methods allow the preparation of materials with thicker perovskite blocks, exploiting high surface mobility and lattice matching with the substrate. This paper describes the growth of an n = 6 member CaO[(CSMO)2(LCMO)2 (CSMO)2] in which the six unit cell perovskite block is sub-divided into two central La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) and two terminal Ca0.85Sm0.15MnO3 (CSMO) layers to allow stabilization of the rock salt layer and variation of the transition metal charge.

This paper reports the evaluation of the cubic B site cation-ordered double perovskite system Ba2Co2−x(Mo1/2Nb1/2)xO6, resulting in the single phase composition Ba2CoMo0.5Nb0.5O6−δ (BCMN) with a mixed Co charge state stabilized by a combination of Mo and Nb doping as a new mixed conductor with potential SOFC cathode applications. X-ray, neutron, and electron diffraction show that hexagonal intergrowths found in multiple phase samples at lower Mo/Nb contents are suppressed in BCMN, which has large domains of rock-salt ordered B site cations with separate Co and Mo/Nb sites. Conductivity measurement and impedance spectroscopy investigation shows that BCMN has a considerably reduced dc conductivity compared with materials such as BSCF but exhibits comparable electrochemical properties to some existing cathode materials in symmetrical cell measurements, and shows higher structural stability and reduced reactivity with the Ce0.8Sm0.2O2−δ (SDC) electrolyte. Supercritical CO2 is used as an antisolvent to precipitate out nanostructured homogeneous mixtures of Cu2+ and Mn3+ with crystallites of 10–20 nm in diameter. Following calcination, this material forms a crystalline tetragonal spinel, CuMn2O4, with a branched chainlike structure with a length of 160–200nm and diameters of approximately 40nm. This new material is more than twice as active per unit surface area as the conventionally prepared hopcalite catalysts for the oxidation of carbon monoxide. This is the first time that homogeneous mixed oxides have been formed using this method.

Metal lite: High-resolution neutron powder diffraction data reveals that the body-centered cubic crystal structure of lithium(0)tetraamine transforms to a simple cubic structure below 22 K. The detailed structure determinations will allow new insights into the coupled structural and electronic properties of the lightest metal.

The manufacture of heterogeneous catalysts and catalyst supports produces substantial amounts of nitrate containing aqueous effluent. The use of nitrate free precursors and an environmentally friendly process would change the manufacture so that the entire process of catalyst synthesis and use can be considered green. In this work the precipitation of titania acetylacetonate nanoparticles for use as catalytic supports using a supercritical carbon dioxide anti-solvent process was investigated over a range of conditions. The effects of 1) pressure, 2) temperature, 3) solution flowrate, 4) solution concentration of TiO(acac) 2 in methanol, 5) nozzle diameter and 6) CO 2 /methanol flow ratio on the mean particle size and morphology were studied. Particle sizes between 27 and 78 nm were obtained and were generally string and branch-like with an amorphous nature. Pressure and temperature had little effect on the mean particle size. A decrease in the velocity of the solution flow rate led to an increase in mean particle size and to particles that exhibited greater interconnectivity. It was also observed that an increase in concentration of TiO(acac) 2 in methanol led to an increase in mean particle size. The process shows promise for the production of catalysts by an environmentally acceptable route.

A2B2O7 complex oxides with the pyrochlore structure feature a wide variety of chemical compositions and corresponding diverse electrical and physical properties. A new pyrochlore, Yb0.96Ca1.04TiNbO6.98, is reported and characterized in terms of structural stability and electrical properties. The material is stable to ∼1450 °C in 5% H2/N2 and has a high electronic conductivity in a reducing atmosphere, e.g., 9 S/cm at 800 °C in 5% H2/N2 after high-temperature reduction. Other cation substitutions enhance the low-temperature kinetics of conductivity response to changes in oxygen partial pressure.

Methane storage is important for the development of alternative energy carriers. The synthesis and methane storage properties of microporous hypercrosslinked organic polymers are reported. The figure shows a simulation of methane sorption in microporous hypercrosslinked poly(p-dichloroxylene); up to 5.2 mmol g(-1]) CH4 at 20 bar/298 K; isosteric heat of sorption similar to 21 kJ mol(-1).
