Matere bonds (MaB) to rhenium in a set of organic perrhenates are probed via185/187Re solid-state NMR in applied magnetic fields of up to 35.2 T, and via185/187Re NQR. 185/187Re quadrupolar couplings distinguish between MaB samples and control samples, and their precise values are governed by shear strain of the ReO4− anions. Field‐stepped NMR spectroscopy at up to 36 T using the series‐connected hybrid (SCH) magnet at the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is demonstrated for acquiring ultra‐wideline powder spectra of nuclei with very large quadrupolar interactions. Historically, NMR evolved from the continuous‐wave (cw) field‐swept method in the early days to the pulsed Fourier‐transform method in the modern era. Spectra acquired using field sweeping are generally considered to be equivalent to those acquired using the pulsed method. Here, it is shown that field‐stepped wideline spectra of half‐integer spin quadrupolar nuclei acquired using WURST/CPMG methods can be significantly different from those acquired with the frequency‐stepped method commonly used with superconducting magnets. The inequivalence arises from magnetic field‐dependent NMR interactions such as the anisotropic chemical shift and second‐order quadrupolar interactions; the latter is often the main interaction leading to ultra‐wideline powder patterns of half‐integer spin quadrupolar nuclei. This inequivalence needs be taken into account to accurately and correctly determine the quadrupolar coupling and chemical shift parameters. A simulation protocol is developed for spectral fitting to facilitate analysis of field‐stepped ultra‐wideline NMR spectra acquired using powered magnets. Selected highlights of the recent literature on solid-state NMR of some of the lesser studied nuclei are provided. The roles of ultrahigh magnetic fields, radiofrequency pulse sequences, dynamic nuclear polarization, isotopic enrichment, and nuclear quadrupole resonance in opening up the periodic table to in-depth study are discussed. Multiple bonding between atoms is of ongoing fundamental and applied interest. Here, we report a multinuclear (1H, 13C, and 71Ga) solid-state magnetic resonance spectroscopic study of digallium compounds which have been proposed, albeit somewhat controversially, to contain single, double, and triple Ga−Ga bonds. Of particular relevance to the nature of these bonds, we have carried out two-dimensional 71Ga J/ D-resolved NMR experiments which provide a direct measurement of J(71Ga,71Ga) spin-spin coupling constants across the gallium−gallium bonds. When placed in the context of clear-cut experimental data for analogous singly, doubly, and triply bonded carbon spin pairs or boron spin pairs, the 71Ga NMR data clearly support the notion of a different bonding paradigm in the gallium systems. Our findings are consistent with an increasing role across the purported gallane-gallene-gallyne series for classical and/or slipped π-type bonding orbitals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The anisotropic magnetic susceptibility exhibited by nucleic acids in solution causes such molecules to adopt a small degree of alignment in a magnetic field, resulting in residual dipolar couplings (RDC) between nuclear spins." RDCs, induced either by magnetic field alignment or by anisotropic media such as dilute liquid crystals, have been successfully exploited to provide precise information on biomolecular structure. Critical prerequisites to the interpretation of dynamics of nucleic acids from magnetic field-induced RDCs are accurate reference values of the magnetic susceptibility anisotropies (Ax).

Abstract: While the synthetic utility and reactivity of the so-called “GaI” species is reasonably well established, its exact composition remains unknown. Using primarily multinuclear magnetic resonance techniques (and supported with powder X-ray diffraction measurements), we offer some new insights into the composition of “GaI”. Using 127I nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) experiments, it is clearly demonstrated that gallium diiodide (GaI2) is a significant component of this material, while GaI3 is not. This finding is in contrast with a prior literature account, which noted that Ga2I3 (i.e., one equivalent of GaI3 per equivalent of Ga metal) was present in significant amounts. Additional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) experiments using the 69/71Ga probe nuclei in multiple magnetic fields clearly establish, via its diagnostic Knight-shifted resonance, the presence of Ga0 metal, which is in agreement with prior literature. Taken together, a composition may be tentatively offered: that “GaI” is, to a large extent, two equivalents of Ga0 metal with two equivalents of GaI2, where the latter is composed of Ga+ and ions. This composition may be represented as [Ga0]2[Ga]+[GaI4]−. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
