In this study, the effects of intermetallic compounds (Mg17Al12 and Al8Mn5) on the Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) formation mechanism and corrosion behavior of an in-situ LDH/Mg(OH)2 steam coatings on AZ80 Mg alloy were investigated. Citric acid (CA) was used to activate the alloy surface during the pretreatment process. The alloy was first pretreated with CA and then subjected to a hydrothermal process using ultrapure water to produce Mg-Al-LDH/Mg(OH)2 steam coating. The effect of different time of acid pretreatment on the activation of the intermetallic compounds was investigated. The microstructure and elemental composition of the obtained coatings were analyzed using FE-SEM, EDS, XRD and FT-IR. The corrosion resistance of the coated samples was evaluated using different techniques, i.e., potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) and hydrogen evolution test. The results indicated that the CA pretreatment significantly influenced the activity of the alloy surface by exposing the intermetallic compounds. The surface area fraction of Mg17Al12 and Al8Mn5 phases on the surface of the alloy was significantly higher after the CA pretreatment, and thus promoted the growth of the subsequent Mg-Al-LDH coatings. The CA pretreatment for 30 s resulted in a denser and thicker LDH coating. Increase in the CA pretreatment time significantly led to the improvement in corrosion resistance of the coated AZ80 alloy. The corrosion current density of the coated alloy was lower by three orders of magnitude as compared to the uncoated alloy.

Surgical failures, caused by postoperative infections of bone implants, are commonly met, which cannot be treated precisely with intravenous antibiotics. Photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) have attracted widespread attention due to their non-invasive antibacterial effects on tissues and no bacterial resistance, which may be an excellent approach to solve infections related to bone implants for biodegradable magnesium alloys. Herein, a sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) with a porphyrin ring induced Ca–P coating was prepared on AZ31 magnesium alloy via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The morphology and composition of the samples were characterized through field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) with affiliated energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Fourier infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) as well. Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and hydrogen evolution experiments were employed to evaluate the corrosion behavior of the samples. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to measure Cu elemental content of different immersion periods. Cytocompatibility and antibacterial performance of the coatings were probed using in vitro cytotoxicity tests (MTT assay), live/dead cell staining and plate counting method. The results showed that the obtained (Ca–P/SCC)10 coating exhibited good corrosion resistance, antimicrobial activity (especially under 808 nm irradiation) and biocompatibility. The antibacterial rates for E. coli and S. aureus were 99.9% and 99.8%, respectively; and the photothermal conversion efficiency was as high as 42.1%. Triple antibacterial mechanisms including photodynamic, photothermal reactions and copper-ions release were proposed. This coating exhibited a promising application for biodegradable magnesium alloys.

Molecular recognition was utilized to fabricate bioinspired calcium phosphate (Ca-P) coating on bioabsorbable magnesium alloys through small biomolecules such as Vitamin C (VC). Ca-P and VC hybrid coating (Ca-PVC) was successfully fabricated on AZ31 Mg alloy. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the coatings were investigated using SEM, XRD, and FTIR together with XPS. The results showed that the Ca-PVC coating was composed of bamboo leaf-like Ca-P particles with a thickness of about three times that of the Ca-P coating. The surface roughness of the Ca-PVC coating (1.12 ± 0.12 μm) was lower than that (3.14 ± 1.93 μm) of Ca-P coating, suggesting the formation of refined Ca-P particles resulting from the VC addition. The corrosion resistance of the coated samples was characterized via electrochemical polarization, impedance spectroscopy, and immersion hydrogen evolution tests. The cell toxicity of the coated samples was evaluated utilizing mouse MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts. The charge transfer resistance (Rct) of the Ca-PVC coated alloy increased as compared to the bare and Ca-P coated alloy samples. The Ca-PVC coated alloy exhibited minimal corrosion current density (1.36 × 10−6 A cm−2), which is one order of magnitude lower in comparison to that of the Ca-P coated alloy. These results confirm that VC addition greatly enhanced the coating resistance on AZ31 Mg alloy. It was also noticed that the Ca-PVC coated samples rapidly induced the formation of apatite after immersion in Hank's solution. VC was mainly transformed to L-Threonic acid, which facilitated the nucleation process of the Ca-PVC coating and significantly increased the thickness, density, and bonding strength of the coating. With enhanced corrosion resistance property and excellent biocompatibility, Ca-PVC coating has great potential for application in biodegradable Mg-based alloys.

The influence of bioorganic molecules on Mg corrosion and its protection has attracted more and more attentions. In this work, the cutting-edge advances in the influence of bioorganic molecules (i.e., protein, glucose, amino acids, vitamins and polypeptide) and their coupling effect on Mg degradation and the formation of protection coatings were reviewed. The research orientations of biomedical Mg alloys in exploring degradation mechanisms in vitro were proposed, and the impact of bioorganic molecules on the protective approaches were also explored.

In this work, we demonstrated a novel approach of corrosion protection based on the fabrication of polyelectrolyte/SiO2 nanoparticles multilayers on magnesium alloys. The original multilayers based merely on electrostatic attraction showed porous morphology and weak anti-corrosion protection for the Mg substrate. However, the heat-treatment process would change the microstructures of the multilayers through the cross-linking between the polyelectrolytes and the capping agents of the nanoparticles, and the barrier effects of the coating could be confirmed by polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A (polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)) n coating was fabricated via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly dip coating method. The surface morphologies, chemical compositions and corrosion resistances of the coatings were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffractometer and electrochemical and hydrogen evolution measurements. The results indicated that the (PVP/DNA) n coating shows a smooth surface with shallow scratches and some corrosion cracks, which possesses a good corrosion resistance in simulated body fluid, especially for n  = 20. The (PVP/DNA) n coating can be used as a inducer to construct a biomimetic biocompatible Ca-P coating on Mg alloys. Additionally, we suggest and discuss a corrosion mechanism for the coating. The presence of second phase Mg 2 Ca has remarkable impacts on the formation and degradation of MAO coating. Microstructure, formation and degradation behaviors of substrate and MAO coating were performed. Results revealed that pitting and filiform corrosion occurred on bare Mg-1Li-1Ca alloy. MAO coating significantly improved the corrosion resistance of alloy. The roles of Mg 2 Ca on the formation and degradation mechanisms of MAO coating were discussed. Micro-arc oxidation for the Mg-Li-Ca alloy initiated at α -Mg phase with depleted Ca content. The growth rate of coating on α -Mg phase is faster than that of GBs/Mg 2 Ca. Regulating degradation rate and moderate pH micro-environment for biodegradable magnesium alloys face huge challenge. The chemical and morphological characteristics of micro-arc oxidation (MAO) and chitosan (CS) composite coatings, fabricated on Mg-4Li-1Ca alloy, are analyzed through field-emission scanning electronic microcopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Corrosion resistance of the samples is evaluated via hydrogen evolution, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in Hank's solution. Results indicated that the MAO and CS coating enhances the corrosion resistance and antibacterial growth activity. With increasing immersion time, the degradation of the MAO/CS coatings gives rise to a decrease in pH value and leads to a rapid increase in hydrogen evolution rate after an immersion in Hank's solution after 100 h. The MAO/CS coatings retain the solution pH at a moderate level (≤8.25). • A in-situ growth of ZIF-8 loaded Rhein coating is fabricated on AZ31 alloy. • Rhein releases in response to acidic microenvironment and near-infrared light (NIR). • The synergetic effect of the release of Rhein and PTT obviously kills bacterial. • The coating possesses anticorrosion, antibacterial ability, and low cytotoxicity. Magnesium alloys attract wide attention as bone implant materials due to their outstanding biodegradable and biocompatible properties. However, its rapid degradation rate and bacterial infections after implanting limit its applications. Herein, a self-sacrificing Mg(OH) 2 coating was formed on the MAO coated samples to avoid the dissolution of the MAO coating, promoting the in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8@Rhein coating on the MAO coated AZ31 alloys (defined as MAO/ZIF-8@Rhein coating). Results displayed that the MAO/ZIF-8@Rhein coating provides favorable corrosion resistance due to the physical barriers of ZIF-8@Rhein NPs and inner MAO coating. Rhein is one-step loaded by ZIF-8 NPs and released in response to both pH changes and near-infrared light (NIR) irradiation to kill bacteria. Additionally, the antibacterial rate of MAO/ZIF-8@Rhein coating reaches to 99.95 % (E. coli) and 99.90 % (S. aureus) under the synergy of contact-killing of Rhein and its photothermal effect by irradiation of 808 nm NIR light, and the photothermal conversion efficiency comes up to 53.4 %. [Display omitted] Rapid corrosion and bacterial infection are obstacles to put into use biodegradable magnesium (Mg) alloy as biomedical materials. In this research, an amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC)@curcumin (Cur) loaded poly-methyltrimethoxysilane (PMTMS) coating prepared by self-assembly method on micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coated Mg alloy has been proposed. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are adopted to analyze the morphology and composition of the obtained coatings. The corrosion behaviour of the coatings is estimated by hydrogen evolution and electrochemical tests. The spread plate method without or with 808 nm near-infrared irradiation is applied to evaluate the antimicrobial and photothermal antimicrobial ability of the coatings. Cytotoxicity of the samples is tested by 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo(-z-y1)-2,5-di- phenytetrazoliumromide (MTT) and live/dead assay culturing with MC3T3-E1 cells. Results show that the MAO/ACC@Cur-PMTMS coating exhibited favourable corrosion resistance, dual antibacterial ability, and good biocompatibility. Cur was employed as an antibacterial agent and photosensitizer for photothermal therapy. The core of ACC significantly improved the loading of Cur and the deposition of hydroxyapatite corrosion products during degradation, which greatly promoted the long-term corrosion resistance and antibacterial activity of Mg alloys as biomedical materials. The layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly approach is a versatile way for the construction of multilayered nanoparticles coating. We demonstrated that the TiO 2 nanoparticles could be assembled on magnesium (Mg) alloys via the modification of opposite charged poly(styrenesulfonate) and polyethylenimine. Adsorption of the polyelectrolyte layer occurred in the beaker where particles and the selected polyelectrolyte solution were mixed, creating a layer of polyelectrolyte on the nanoparticles. Then these surfaced-modified nanoparticles were LbL assembled on the Mg alloy by electro-deposition. Finally, the surface silanization would prevent the peeling off of the TiO 2 nanoparticles and leads to stable assembly. The coated samples were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corrosion of the alloys was examined using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. [Display omitted] This work reports the design and preparation of novel organic (polyvinyl alcohol, PVA)-inorganic (neodymium nitrate, Nd(NO 3) 3) hybrid coatings on micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating for magnesium (Mg) alloy corrosion protection. X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscope, Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer and surface roughness were applied to characterize the chemical composition and surface morphology of the coatings. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated by electrochemical and salt spray tests. The results suggested that the formation of PVA-Nd3+ and PVA-Mg2+ complexes promoted the enrichment of Nd3+ on the surface, and thereby improved the sealing quality and compactness of the coating. Interestingly, when the coating was damaged, the Nd3+ ions were transformed to their carbonates and covered the active sites, and thus exhibiting self-healing function. Magnesium (Mg) alloys have received increasing interest as innovative orthopedic implants, while the extremely rapid degradation rate and the susceptibility to the infection have limited their medical applications. In this study, a novel hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating induced by ciprofloxacin (CIP)-loaded polymeric multilayers was prepared on Mg alloy via the combination of layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly and hydrothermal treatment. The coated substrates were subjected to various characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. The corrosion resistance was evaluated by electrochemical and immersion tests. The antibacterial activity was investigated via plate-counting method against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). A novel antibacterial Mg-Al-Ga layered double hydroxide (LDH) coating was fabricated on micro-arc oxide (MAO) coated magnesium (Mg) alloy AZ31 via low-temperature water bath treatment. Electrochemical polarization and impedance spectroscopy, hydrogen evolution rates, and pH monitoring tests were used to characterize the degradation behaviors. The morphology, compositions, and microstructures of the samples were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Antibacterial activities of the coatings against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were evaluated by plate-counting method. Cell-Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) was applied to evaluate the cytotoxicity of coatings. The results demonstrate that the Mg-Al-Ga-LDH coating with a nanosheet structure is constructed to blanket the porous MAO coating. Electrochemical and hydrogen evolution tests reveal that the MAO/Mg-Al-Ga-LDH coating exhibits superior corrosion resistance. Furthermore, antibacterial and cytotoxicity tests prove that the MAO/Mg-Al-Ga-LDH coating possesses an obvious antibacterial and osteogenic effect. A Mg-Al-layered double hydroxide (LDH) coating modified with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and cerium nitrate was prepared on AZ31 magnesium alloy substrate via a hydrothermal process and subsequent the immersion treatment. The surface morphologies and chemical compositions were investigated using FE-SEM, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. These results indicated that the composite coatings were consisted of polymethyltrimethoxysilane (PMTMS) and CeO 2 . The adherence between the PMTMS/CeO 2 coating and the LDH coating was significantly improved with the formation of Si-O-Si and Si-O-Mg chemical bonds. Electrochemical tests and hydrogen evolution illustrated that the optimum corrosion resistance of the composite coating was obtained in presence of 10 −3  mol/L cerium nitrate. The hydrothermally prepared hydroxyapatite (HA) coating on Mg alloys might rapidly degrade due to its brittleness. In this research, the polyelectrolytes, comprising poly (ethylenimine) (PEI), poly (styrene sulfonate) (PSS), poly (acrylic acid) (PAA), and poly (phosphate ammonium) (PPA), were employed to improve the degradation resistance and the mechanical properties of the coatings. The chemical composition and microstructure of the as-synthesized samples were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with affiliated energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, Young's modulus (E), hardness (H), and degradation behavior of various HA coatings were investigated using nanoindentation and electrochemical methods and hydrogen evolution. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to explore the role of the polyelectrolytes with different functional groups in the interlocking process. These results demonstrate that the interlocking effect is associated with the anti-shear performance of the branched structure and the interaction forces between the functional groups and the Ca2+ ions. Hydrothermal fabrication of hydroxyapatite coatings on Mg alloys has been extensively developed in recent years. However, the applicability of the samples is generally restricted by the porous nature and the brittleness coating. In this work, ammonium polyphosphate was selected as an additive of the hydrothermal synthesis process. A compact microstructure was obtained under the interlocking effect of the polyelectrolytes. The results from nanoindentation, scratch tests, electrochemical analysis, and immersion experiments revealed that the newly developed coating exhibited enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The (CIP/PAH/SiO 2 /PAH) 20 multilayer film was successfully fabricated on magnesium alloys through the spin-spray layer-by-layer technique with the controlled CIP release, excellent antibacterial activity, favorable corrosion resistance and apparent self-healing ability. • The multilayers loaded with CIP and SiO 2 were formed on Mg alloys by SSLbL method. • (CIP/PAH/SiO 2 /PAH) 20 film could enhance the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. • Self-healing could be achieved via the migration of the SiO 2 nanoparticles. • The film showed antibacterial property against S. aureus and E. coli. • The release rate of CIP could be tuned by the number of the assembled layers. Complications related to corrosion and infection of magnesium (Mg) implants are encountered by physical barrier and local drug delivery system. In this work, the multilayer films composed of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and SiO 2 nanoparticles were fabricated on Mg alloys by the spin-spray layer-by-layer assembly method. The resultant films were characterized via FT-IR, XPS, SEM and EDS techniques. The corrosion behaviors of the multilayer films were investigated via electrochemical tests and hydrogen evolution experiment. The obtained films showed corrosion resistance, self-healing ability, antibacterial efficacy and a prolonged release profile. The results also suggested that the loading dosage and the release rate of CIP could be controlled by the assembly parameters. Moreover, the in vitro release kinetics of CIP from the multilayer films could be fitted with the pseudo-second-order model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
