Living cells constantly monitor their external and internal environments for changing conditions, stresses or developmental cues. Networks of genetically encoded components sense and process these signals following pre-defined rules in such a way that specific combinations of the presence or absence of certain signals activate suitable responses. Many biological signal integration mechanisms approximate Boolean logic operations, whereby presence or absence of signals are computed as variables with values described as either true or false, respectively. Boolean logic gates are commonly used in algebra and in computer sciences, and have long been recognized as useful information processing devices in electronic circuits. In these circuits, logic gates integrate multiple input values and produce an output signal according to pre-defined Boolean logic operations. Recent implementation of these logic operations using genetic components to process information in living cells has allowed genetic circuits to enable novel traits with decision-making capabilities. Although several literature reports describe the design and use of these logic gates to introduce new functions in bacterial, yeast and mammalian cells, similar approaches in plants remain scarce, likely due to challenges posed by the complexity of plants and the lack of some technological advances, e.g., species-independent genetic transformation. In this mini review, we have surveyed recent reports describing synthetic genetic Boolean logic operators in plants and the different gate architectures used. Concatenated enzyme-based Boolean logic gates activated with 5 chemical input signals were analyzed with a smartphone photo camera. Simultaneous detection of 32 input combinations was conveniently performed using enzyme-modified fiberglass sensing spots generating fluorescence with different intensities for the 0 and 1 binary outputs. Research in the area of molecular computing systems, in the general framework of unconventional computing, has received high attention and resulted in rapid progress in formulating signal-controlled switchable molecules capable to perform Boolean logic operations and basic arithmetic functions. Extension of this research to biomolecular systems allowed sophisticated computational functions much easier than using synthetic molecular and supramolecular species. The advantage of biomolecular systems comparing with synthetic molecular systems is in their complementarity and compatibility allowing easy assembling multi-component systems from various biomolecules, thus increasing their functional complexity. While DNA-based computing systems are promising faster computing than Si-based electronics, at least for solving some combinatorial problems, due to massive parallel operation, enzyme-based logic systems are less promising for computational applications in their narrow definition. However, they offer novel biosensing and bioactuation features operating in binary Yes/No format. The present review article overviews different kinds of enzyme logic gates exemplified with specific enzymatic reactions/cascades. Motivation for this research and its possible applications are discussed. The review will be helpful to researchers working in this specific area to see the comprehensive collection of logic operations performed by the enzyme reactions. Memristors, namely hysteretic devices capable of changing their resistance in response to applied electrical stimuli, may provide new opportunities for future memory and computation, thanks to their scalable size, low switching energy and nonvolatile nature. We have developed a functionally complete set of logic functions including NOR, NAND and NOT gates, each utilizing a single phase-change memristor (PCM) where resistance switching is due to the phase transformation of an active chalcogenide material. The logic operations are enabled by the high functionality of nanoscale phase change, featuring voltage comparison, additive crystallization and pulse-induced amorphization. General‐purpose computers usually use logic gate computing units based on complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS). Due to the separate memory and computing units in Von Neumann architecture, data transmission requires great energy and time consumption. Developing novel neuromorphic devices and comprehensively investigating their logical computing mode are crucial to achieve high‐performance and low‐power neuromorphic computation. Here, a systematic summary of Boolean logic computing based on emerging neuromorphic transistors is presented. This summary encompasses logical operation modes, materials, device structures, and working mechanisms. The input mode of Boolean logic operation is classified into electrical input, optical input, and synergistic optical/electrical input. Besides, additional modulation strategies to construct programmable logic functions by electrical, optical, and thermal signals are also summarized. These strategies hold great significance as they enable dynamic reconfiguration of logic operations and provide neuromorphic devices with decision‐making capabilities. Finally, the application prospects and current challenges to Boolean logic computing based on dendritic integration are discussed from the aspects of device integration, synergistic input/modulation modes, auxiliary peripheral circuit, software/hardware system, etc. It is believed that comprehensive investigations on neuromorphic Boolean logic operations are crucial to push forward the development of future neuromorphic computing toward high efficiency and high integration density. Binary operating (YES/NO) biosensors based on unconventional biocomputing concept represent a novel approach to the analysis of various biomarkers and environmental signals. The binary biosensors with implemented Boolean logic process analyte input signals using chemical means without electronic computers. They can be used for extension of the analytical output signals to chemical actuation and can be integrated with wearable analytical devices. The progress in this novel biosensing approach is strongly dependent on achievements in biomolecular computing, particularly based on enzyme-catalyzed reactions. The easy interpretation of the analytical results represented in the binary YES/NO form allows convenient adaptation of the biosensors for end-user and point-ofcare within various biomedical and bioelectronic applications. In this paper, we study how to represent a directed graph as a SAT problem. We study those directed graphs which consists of two strongly connected components (SCC). We reuse the SAT models which are known as the Black-and-White SAT representations. We present the so-called 3rd Solution Lemma: If a directed graph consists of two SCCs, A and B, and there is an edge from A to B, then the corresponding SAT representation has 3 solutions: the black assignment, the white assignment, and the 3rd solution can be written as ￢A union B. Using this result, we present an important negative result: We cannot represent all SAT problems as directed graphs using the Black-and-White SAT representations. Furthermore, we study the question how to represent an SCC by one Boolean variable to maintain the 3rd Solution Lemma. For that we use extended resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method of using non‐volatile and fast ferroelectric field‐effect transistor (FeFET) devices to realize Boolean logic is proposed. First, the internal states are initialized. Then, the gate and body function as input terminals, which are used to write the states of the device, based on the voltage. Finally, the output signals can be easily read through the drain current. Of the 10 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard logic gates, eight can be implemented using the proposed operation method alone and by following the definitions listed herein. Thus, to enable FeFET devices to act as functional logic gates, a simple operating method is proposed, providing substantial contributions to the development of computing in memory. Urgency of the research. We consider crucial to distinguish between the original Boole’s logic and its modern development as Boolean logic in order to understand their theoretical and applied capacities. In addition, the development of Boolean logic constitutes a strong example about the relationships between logic, an algebraic language of thoughts, and computation. Target setting. Boole’s logic is generally perceived as equivalent to Boolean logic despite their mathematical and conceptual differences. The influences of Boolean logic on computer science are recognized especially in their applications in circuits design. However, it appears that the influence of this logic on Cryptography is less cited in the literature when studying the relationships between logic and computer science. Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. Studies of cryptographic Boolean functions and applications have been realized by scholars such as T. Cusick, and P. Stanica. Boolean methods in Mathematics are studied by Y. Crama and P. L. Hammer. Some differences between the original Boole’s logic and the modern Boolean logic have been pointed out and promoted by N. J. Wild berger. Boole’s algebra as a mathematical language of thought has been presented in many fundamental handbooks such as those written or edited by D. M. Gabbay, J. Woods, W. Kneale, M. Kneale, and L. Haaparanta. The research objective. The first objective of this research is to formally explain the theoretical differences between Boole’s logic and the modern Boolean logic. The second objective is to show the immense role of Boolean logic in computer science through the developments of circuits design and cryptography. The statement of basic material. The developments of an algebraic logical language of thoughts by G. Boole are considered using historical and theoretical perspectives. The technical implementations of Boolean logic in combinational circuits and in modern cryptography show strong influences of a 19th century logic on the latest technologies of computing. Conclusions. In this research we came to the following results: 1) Boolean logic is different but derived from the original logic of Boole; it has been obtained due to a transformational process that led to a two-valued logic. 2) This two-valued logic made possible its digital implementation into a binary system. 3) The use of Boolean logic in circuits’ analysis and design constitutes a strong example of the influences of logic on computer science. 4) The use of Boolean logic in cryptography constitutes another strong example of the role of logic in modern computation. We present a potential new mode of natural computing in which simple, heat-driven fluid flows perform Boolean logic operations. The system comprises a two-dimensional single-phase fluid that is heated from below and cooled from above, with two obstacles placed on the horizontal mid-plane. The obstacles remove all vertical momentum that flows into them. The horizontal momentum extraction of the obstacles is controlled in a binary fashion, and constitutes the 2-bit input. The output of the system is a thresholded measure of the energy extracted by the obstacles. Due to the existence of multiple attractors in the phase space of this system, the input-output relationships are equivalent to those of the OR, XOR or NAND gates, depending on the threshold and obstacle separation. The ability to reproduce these logical operations suggests that convective flows might have the potential to perform more general computations, despite the fact that they do not involve electronics, chemistry or multiple fluid phases. Abstract This paper devises a novel Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) framework for energy-aware acquisition of analog signals with Logic-in-Memory capabilities. The beyond-CMOS hardware architecture has been designed to minimize the overall cost of signal acquisition. Spin-Hall Effect driven Domain Wall Motion (SHE-DWM) devices are utilized to realize the proposed framework called Spin-based Logic-In-Memory ADC (SLIM-ADC). Our simulation results indicate that the proposed SLIM-ADC offers ∼200 fJ energy consumption on average for each analog conversion or logic operation with up to 1 GHz speed. Furthermore, our results indicate that the proposed SLIM-ADC outperforms other state of the art spin-based ADC designs by offering ∼5.45 mW improved power dissipation on average. Additionally, a Majority Gate (MG)-based Full-Adder (MG-FA) is implemented using the proposed SLIM-ADC. Our results show that the proposed MG-FA offers ∼2.9-fold reduced power dissipation on average and ∼1.7-fold reduced delay on average compared to the state of the art Full-Adder designs reported herein. Deductive inference is usually regarded as being “tautological” or “analytical”: the information conveyed by the conclusion is contained in the information conveyed by the premises. This idea, however, clashes with the undecidability of first-order logic and with the (likely) intractability of Boolean logic. In this article, we address the problem both from the semantic and the proof-theoretical point of view. We propose a hierarchy of propositional logics that are all tractable (i.e. decidable in polynomial time), although by means of growing computational resources, and converge towards classical propositional logic. The underlying claim is that this hierarchy can be used to represent increasing levels of “depth” or “informativeness” of Boolean reasoning. Special attention is paid to the most basic logic in this hierarchy, the pure “intelim logic”, which satisfies all the requirements of a natural deduction system (allowing both introduction and elimination rules for each logical operator) while admitting of a feasible (quadratic) decision procedure. We argue that this logic is “analytic” in a particularly strict sense, in that it rules out any use of “virtual information”, which is chiefly responsible for the combinatorial explosion of standard classical systems. As a result, analyticity and tractability are reconciled and growing degrees of computational complexity are associated with the depth at which the use of virtual information is allowed. Reconfigurable nonvolatile logic within the crossbar array provides a promising approach for constructing a non-von Neumann architecture that integrates computation and storage. In this paper, a nonvolatile Boolean logic configuration based on one-transistor-one-memristor (1T1M) cells is presented. The proposed logic configuration is able to execute diverse Boolean logic operations simply by altering the applied voltage level. The logic design can be mapped to the 1T1M array, and the operation results can be stored in situ. Because of the high flexibility of the logic configuration, the 1T1M array can be configured to perform the encryption and decryption of binary images. The 1T1M array can be also used to realize composite logic functions. Furthermore, the impact of resistance variation on logic operations is taken into consideration, showing strong robustness. As the era of big data dawns, conventional digital computers face increasing difficulties in performance and power efficiency due to their von Neumann architecture, leading to an urgent requirement for computing paradigms that can merge logic and memory. An efficient in‐memory logic approach based on unipolar memristors that is capable of implementing all 16 Boolean logic functions in the same cell in less than 3 logic steps using a thermochemical metallization cell, where the confinement of filament diameter and thus switching location have reduced the threshold voltages and improved the switching uniformity, is experimentally demonstrated. The high efficiency of the logic units allows for the construction of novel encryption hardware in which both the encryption and decryption processes are achieved by memristor logic while the encryption key is also generated from the intrinsic stochasticity of resistive switching. The memristive array is also used to implement the calculation of Hamming distance and 1‐bit binary full adder with high efficiency, thus paving a way for future non‐von Neumann computing architectures.
