Enzymatic hydrolysis contributes to obtaining fermentable sugars using pretreated lignocellulose materials for bioethanol generation. Unfortunately, the pretreatment of lignocellulose causes low substrate enzymatic hydrolysis, which is due to the structure changes of lignin to produce main phenolic by-products and non-productive cellulase adsorption. It is reported that modified lignin enhances the speed of enzymatic hydrolysis through single means to decrease the negative effects of fermentation inhibitors or non-productive cellulase adsorption. However, a suitable modified lignin should be selected to simultaneously reduce the fermentation inhibitors concentration and non-productive cellulase adsorption for saving resources and maximizing the enzymatic hydrolysis productivity. Meanwhile, the adsorption micro-mechanisms of modified lignin with fermentation inhibitors and cellulase remain elusive. In this review, different pretreatment effects toward lignin structure, and their impacts on subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis are analyzed. The main modification methods for lignin are presented. Density functional theory is used to screen suitable modification methods for the simultaneous reduction of fermentation inhibitors and non-productive cellulase adsorption. Lignin-fermentation inhibitors and lignin-cellulase interaction mechanisms are discussed using different advanced analysis techniques. This article addresses the gap in previous reviews concerning the application of modified lignin in the enhancement of bioethanol production. Sunlight irradiation significantly mediates plant litter's carbon dynamics and volatile carbon release in semi-arid and arid ecosystems. In this process, carbon loss is controlled by lignin, but the mechanisms of production of CO 2 and CH 4 during lignin photolysis are ambiguous. In this study, the photomineralization of plant litter and the lignocellulosic component collectively indicate that lignin is a major source of CO 2 and CH 4 emissions. Characterization and free radical analysis reveal that the production of CO 2 is due to the oxidation and ring-opening reaction of the coniferyl alcohol unit, with the subsequent decarboxylation of carboxylic acid as an oxidation product. Understanding the distribution and accessibility of polymers within plant cell walls is crucial for addressing biomass recalcitrance in lignocellulosic materials. In this work, Imaging Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, coupled with targeted chemical treatments, were employed to investigate cell wall polymer distribution in two bamboo species at both tissue and cell wall levels. Tissue-level Imaging FTIR revealed significant disparities in the distribution and chemical activity of cell wall polymers between the fibrous sheath and fibrous strand. At the cell wall level, Imaging Raman spectroscopy delineated a distinct difference between the secondary wall and intercellular layer, with the latter containing higher levels of lignin, hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA), and xylan, and lower cellulose. Mild acidified sodium chlorite treatment led to partial removal of lignin, HCA, and xylan from the intercellular layer, albeit to a lesser extent than alkaline treatment, indicating susceptibility of these polymers to chemical treatment. In contrast, lignin in the secondary wall exhibited limited reactivity to acidified sodium chlorite but was slightly removed by alkaline treatment, suggesting stable chemical properties with slight alkaline intolerance. The hydrothermal pretreatment process stands out as a pivotal step in breaking down the hemicellulosic fraction of lignocellulosic biomasses, such as sugarcane bagasse and eucalyptus sawdust. This pretreatment step is crucial for preparing these materials for subsequent processes, particularly in food applications. This technique aims to disintegrate plant wall components like cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, and facilitating access in later phases such as enzymatic hydrolysis, and ultimately making fermentable sugars available. In this study, sugarcane bagasse and eucalyptus sawdust biomass underwent hydrothermal pretreatment at specific conditions, yielding two key components: dry biomass and hemicellulose liquor. The primary focus was to assess the impact of hydrothermal pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis, using the Celic Ctec III enzyme cocktail, to obtain fermentable sugars. These sugars were then transformed into membranes via strain Gluconacetobacter xylinus bacterial biosynthesis. Notably, the addition of a nitrogen source significantly boosted production to 14.76 g/ in hydrolyzed sugarcane bagasse, underscoring its vital role in bacterial metabolism. Conversely, in hydrolyzed eucalyptus, nitrogen source inclusion unexpectedly decreased yield, highlighting the intricate interactions in fermentation media and the pivotal influence of nitrogen supplementation. Coconut wood (Cocos nucifera L.) is lightweight and has variable quality, making it a potential candidate for manufacturing sound absorption boards. However, its sound absorption coefficient needs enhancement to optimize its effectiveness in this application. This study aims to enhance its sound absorption properties using eco-friendly hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid treatments. This treatment modified the carbohydrate polymers (hemicellulose and cellulose) and lignin structures in the wood cell wall. The novelty of this approach lies in using these chemicals to improve acoustic performance significantly. Coconut wood samples were treated with a 1:1 acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide mixture for 20, 40, 60, and 80 min. Characterization techniques such as FTIR, XPS, and XRD, and 3D optical profilometry analyzed changes in chemical functionalities, crystallinity, and surface roughness. Sound absorption coefficients were measured using the impedance tube method. Results showed a significant improvement in sound absorption for all treated samples, especially at 60 min. The treatment also enhanced surface roughness, air permeability, porosity, and pore sizes, contributing to better sound absorption. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were successfully synthesized from carbohydrate-rich residue of birch obtained following the lignin-first strategy. The optical and physicochemical properties of the CQDs were studied, along with their potential for photocatalytic pollutant degradation. By combining solvothermal and chemical oxidation methods, the product yield of CQDs from carbohydrate-rich residue reached 8.1 wt%. Doping nitrogen enhances the graphitization of CQDs and introduces abundant amino groups to the surface, thereby boosted the quantum yield significantly from 8.9 % to 18.7 %-19.3 %. Nitrogen-doped CQDs exhibited efficient photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, reaching 37 % within 60 min, with a kinetic degradation rate of 0.00725 min -1 . Thermochromic wood (TW), a smart material that can respond to temperature changes and store thermal energy, holds broad potential for application in the construction industry. This study fabricated thermochromic poplar (TP) by encapsulating a thermochromic phase change material (TPCM), consisting of tetradecyl myristate and methyl red, within a full poplar-based cellulose/lignin/SiO 2 framework. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicate that the poplar matrix and the incorporated SiO 2 formed an integrated cellulose/lignin/SiO 2 framework, which encapsulated the TPCM within the poplar ducts. The TP exhibits a color change from light purple to dark purple within the temperature range of 30-48 °C, with a pronounced shift at approximately 42 °C, correlating with the sensation of scalding. Thus, TP-based products can alert users to the risk of scalding through a noticeable color change. The full poplar-based framework mitigates the impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the TP and prevents the loss of TPCM during thermal processing. The mechanical properties of TP are enhanced to a strength grade comparable to that of Manchurian ash wood, making it suitable for load-bearing components in wooden structures. Additionally, the average temperature of TP is around 10 °C higher than that of untreated poplar within 25 min after the same thermal treatment. Lignin represents a promising source of renewable energy. The development of CLEO (Cold processed Lignin Ethanol Oil) fuel introduces a novel lignin valorization approach, proposing its potential as maritime biofuel. However, its industrial success depends on enhancing fractionation yields and reducing solvent evaporation, which necessitates a detailed analysis of lignin properties, solvent types, and process parameters. By using novel combinations of biobased solvents, yields improved from 34 wt% to 49-53 wt% by using 30 wt% water or 40 wt% glycerol in ethanol, where Hildebrand Solubility Parameters emerged as indicative tool for increasing yields. Experiments on solid-to-liquid (S:L) ratios revealed a good balance between yield and lignin dispersion concentration at an S:L of 1:2.5. Producing CLEO with an improved solvent composition and S:L ratio resulted in 89 wt% yield while eliminating solvent evaporation requirements. In this study, Kraft lignin was modified by ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) and urea for achieving phosphorylation and carbamylation, aiming to protect wood against biological and fire attack. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) sapwood was impregnated with a water solution containing Kraft lignin, ADP, and urea, followed by heat treatment at 150 °C, resulting in changes in the properties of the Kraft lignin as well as the wood matrix. Infrared spectroscopy, 13 C cross-polarisation magic-angle-spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and direct excitation single-pulse 31 P MAS NMR analyses suggested the grafting reaction of phosphate and carbamylate groups onto the hydroxyl groups of Kraft lignin. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicated that the condensed Kraft lignin filled the lumen as well as partially penetrating the wood cell wall. The modified Kraft lignin imparted fire-retardancy and increased char residue to the wood at elevated temperature, as confirmed by limiting oxygen index, microscale combustion calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The modified wood exhibited superior resistance against mold and decay fungi attack under laboratory conditions. The conversion of lignin into bioactive compounds through selective organic synthesis methods represents a promising frontier in the pursuit of sustainable raw materials and green chemistry. This review explores the versatility of lignin-derived bioactive compounds, ranging from their application in drug discovery to their role in the development of biodegradable materials. Despite notable advancements, the synthesis routes and yields of highly bioactive molecules from lignin still require further exploration and improvement. This review provides an in-depth examination of the progress made in understanding the complex structure of lignin and developing innovative approaches to exploit its potential. Specifically, the types of lignins covered include softwood Kraft lignin, hardwood organosolv lignin, and soda lignin. This work is divided into three parts: first, the transformation of lignin into bioactive molecules with chemically active centres and functionalised hydroxyl groups through depolymerisation; second, kinetic modelling techniques essential for understanding the chemical kinetics of lignin and enabling significant scaling up in the conversion of organic molecules; third, efficient catalytic pathways for synthesising molecules with anticancer and antibacterial properties. In this study, magnetic biochar was synthesized by doping Fe 3 O 4 onto the biochar surface followed by analysis of its properties. The efficiency of methylene blue (MB) removal through the combined processes of adsorption and photolysis was assessed. The presence of Fe 3 O 4 on the biochar surface was confirmed using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The magnetic biochar, after MB adsorption, showed a magnetism of 39.50 emu/g leading to a 97.07 % recovery rate. The specific surface area of biochar was higher (380.68 m 2 /g) than that of magnetic biochar (234.46 m 2 /g), and the maximum adsorption capacity of MB was higher in the biochar (0.03 mg/g) than that in magnetic biochar (0.02 mg/g) under the optimal conditions for MB adsorption. The MB adsorption experiments using biochar or magnetic biochar were optimally conducted under 10-20 mg/L MB concentration, 1 g biochar dosage, pH 12, 200 rpm rotation speed, 25 °C temperature, and 30 min duration. Under dark conditions, biochar had a higher MB removal rate, at 83.91 %, compared to magnetic biochar, at 78.30 %. Under visible light (λ > 425 nm), magnetic biochar effectively removed MB within 10 min, highlighting the synergistic effect of adsorption and photolysis. The production of chemicals/products so far relies on fossil-based resources with the creation of several environmental problems at the global level. In this situation, a sustainable and circular economy model is necessitated to mitigate global environmental issues. Production of biowaste from various processing industries also creates environmental issues which would be valorized for the production of industrially important reactive and bioactive compounds. Lignin acts as a vital part in biowaste composition which can be converted into a wide range of phenolic compounds. The phenolic compounds have attracted much attention, owing to their influence on diverse not only organoleptic parameters, such as taste or color, but also active agents for active packaging systems. Crop residues of varied groups, which are an affluent source of lignocellulosic biomass could serve as a renewable resource for the biosynthesis of ferulic acid (FA). FA is obtained by the FA esterase enzyme action, and it can be further converted into various tail end phenolic flavor green compounds like vanillin, vanillic acid and hydroxycinnamic acid. Lignin being renewable in nature, processing and management of biowastes towards sustainability is the need as far as the global industrial point is concerned. This review explores all the approaches for conversion of lignin into value-added phenolic compounds that could be included to packaging applications. These valorized products can exhibit the antioxidant, antimicrobial, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, and due to these features can emerge to incorporate them into production of functional foods and be utilization of them at active food packaging application. The importance of environmental issues and the existence of humans have led to the recognition of environmental concerns as the main risk to modern life. Notably, one major concern for protecting and managing the environment and human health is the presence of dyes in wastewater. The adsorption efficiency of cheap, ecofriendly, and easily available agro-waste, Trapa natans (Chestnut) and Citrullus lanatus (Watermelon) peels, has been investigated in their native forms (TNAT and CLAN) as well as citric acid impregnated forms (C-TNAT and C-CLAN), respectively, for the detoxification of toxic, deleterious, and carcinogenic Eosin yellow dye (EYD) from wastewater streams. Different operational parameters were optimized for the investigation of isothermal, kinetic and the thermodynamic models. R 2 for sportive decontamination of Eosin by citric acid treated adsorbents were close to one, supporting the applicability of Langmuir, Temkin, and pseudo-second-order in this investigation. Maximum sorption capabilities were 222 and 667 mg/g for chemically treated bio-waste C-TNAT and C-CLAN, respectively, reflecting their efficient and promising performance, while Gibbs free energy revealed exothermic and spontaneous adsorption behavior. The kinetic statics for q e (cal) are quite close to q e (exp) , indicating the viability and fitness of pseudo-second-order mechanisms. The synthetic superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) market is experiencing significant growth, with applications spanning agriculture, healthcare, and civil engineering, projected to increase from $9.0 billion USD in 2019 to $12.9 billion USD by 2024. Despite this positive trend, challenges such as fluctuating raw material costs and lower biodegradability of fossil fuel-based SAPs could impede further expansion. In contrast, cellulose and its derivatives present a sustainable alternative due to their renewable, biodegradable, and abundant characteristics. Lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), rich in cellulose and lignin, shows promise as a source for eco-friendly superabsorbent polymer (SAP) production. This review discusses the applications, challenges, and future prospects of SAPs derived from lignocellulosic resources, focusing on the cellulose extraction process through fractionation and various modification and crosslinking techniques. Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), as an excellent degradable plastic feedstock, is limited by its diminishing stability in wet environment, low strength, thermal instability and nonopaque properties. In response to these concerns, a PVA/demethylated lignin-based supramolecular plastic (DPVA-HA-Fe-5) was designed and produced from PVA, demethylated lignin (DL), humic acid (HA) and Fe 3+ ions via a simple casting method. As compared with pure PVA plastic, the tensile strength of DPVA-HA-Fe-5 were increased by 411 % to 410.61 MPa, and the breaking strain was increased by 149 % to 239.47 %. Notably, the hydrophobicity of DPVA-HA-Fe-5 was also significantly improved. Although in highly humid environment (stored in RH = 100 % for 10 days) or in alkaline organic solvent (stored in pyridine for 3 h), DPVA-HA-Fe-5 also showed excellent mechanical strengths of 302.9 and 222.99 MPa, respectively, which are equivalent or even superior to the most of commercial petroleum-based plastics. Moreover, the prepared plastics showed an outstanding UV resistance and shading performance, and about 98.3 % protection against ultraviolet radiation B rays and 90.7 % protection against visible light were obtained. Enzyme immobilization has emerged as a prodigious strategy in the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) promising enhanced efficacy and stability of the enzymes. Further, enzyme immobilization on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) facilitates the easy recovery and reuse of biocatalysts. This results in the development of a nanobiocatalytic system, that serves as an eco-friendly and inexpensive LCB deconstruction approach. This review provides an overview of nanomaterials used for immobilization with special emphasis on the nanomaterial-enzyme interactions and strategies of immobilization. After the succinct outline of the immobilization procedures and supporting materials, a comprehensive assessment of the catalysis enabled by nanomaterial-immobilized biocatalysts for the conversion and degradation of lignocellulosic biomasses is provided by gathering state-of-the-art examples. The challenges and future directions associated with this technique providing a potential solution in the present article. Lignocellulose constitutes the primary component of dietary fiber. We assessed how fermenting bamboo shoot residue with the medicinal white-rot fungus Inonotus obliquus affected the yield, composition, and functional attributes of dietary fiber by altering bamboo shoot residue lignocellulose's spatial structure and composition. I. obliquus secretes lignocellulolytic enzymes, which effectively enhance the degradation of holocellulose and lignin by 87.8% and 25.5%, respectively. Fermentation led to a more porous structure and reduced crystallinity. The yield of soluble dietary fiber increased from 5.1 g/100 g raw BSR to 7.1 g/100 g 9-day-fermented bamboo shoot residue. The total soluble sugar content of dietary fiber significantly increased from 9.2% to 13.8%, which improved the hydration, oil holding capacity, in vitro cholesterol, sodium cholate, and nitrite adsorption properties of dietary fiber from bamboo shoot residue. Herein, to address this issue, CCR was directly used as starting material for high-solid loading enzymatic hydrolysis via a simple strategy by combining PFI homogenization (for sufficient mixing) with batch-feeding. A maximum glucose concentration of 187.1 g/L was achieved after the saccharification with a solid loading of 25 wt% and enzyme dosage of 10 FPU/g-CCR. Furthermore, the residue of enzymatic hydrolysis (REH) was directly used as a bio-adhesive for plywood production with both high dry (1.7 MPa) and wet (1.1 MPa) surface bonding strength (higher than the standard (0.7 MPa)), and the excellent adhesion was due to the interfacial crosslinking between the REH adhesive (containing lignin, free glucose, and nanosized fibers) and cell wall of woods. Compared with traditional reported adhesives, the REH bio-adhesive has advantages of formaldehyde-free, good moisture resistance, green process, relatively low cost and easy realization. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) is an ideal solvent for extracting lignin in biomass pretreatment process. However, excessive breakage of the β-O-4 bonds of lignin remained a challenge for DES-pretreated biomass. In this study, a novel pretreatment system of choline chloride-citrate acid DES combined with ethanol for the pretreatment of bamboo was developed. The chemical characteristics of extracted lignin of bamboo before and after pretreatment were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The results showed that the lignin extracted by ethanol/DES had moderate and uniform molecular weight (M n : 3081-4314 Da, M w : 3130-5399 Da), and was structurally intact (maintaining 40.29 % β-O-4 content), which was about five times higher than DES-extracted lignin, and contained a high number of S units (up to 80 %). Ethanol/DES system resulted in high removal of lignin up to 78.81 % and the highest enzymatic digestibility of glucose (72.68 %) and xylan (92.95 %), respectively. In addition, recovered DES provided similar glucose digestibility yields and delignification performance. A novel ternary deep eutectic solvent (TDES), consisting of zinc chloride, ethylene glycol and alpha hydroxy carboxylic acids (i.e., glycolic acid, citric acid and malic acid), was first proposed to effectively fractionate and convert willow (Salix matsudana cv. Zhuliu) into fermentable sugar. In particular, the zinc chloride/ethylene glycol/malic acid (ZnCl 2 /EG/MA) TDES system showed remarkable fractionation performance with 91.66 % xylan and 90.12 % lignin removals at 130 °C for 1.5 h, resulting in 96.01 % glucose yield in the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis stage. Moreover, the regenerated lignin showed regular nanoparticle morphology and good antioxidant properties. Even after four recycling, the TDES showed 70.16 % of delignification and 83.70 % glucose yield with the TDES pretreated willow. The influence of adding surfactants on the performance of high-solid anaerobic digestion of horticultural waste was extensively investigated in batch systems. Adding Tween series and polyethylene glycol series non-ionic surfactants had positive effects on biogas production, resulting in 370.1 mL/g VS and 256.6 mL/g VS with Tween 60 and polyethylene glycol 300 at a surfactant-to-grass mass ratio of 0.20, while the biogas production of anaerobic digestion without surfactants was 107.54 mL/g VS. The optimal and economically feasible choice was adding Tween 20 at a ratio of 0.08 g/g grass in high-solid anaerobic digestion. A kinetics model reliably represented the relationship between surfactant concentration and biogas production. The mechanism of surfactants working on lignocellulose was investigated. The improvement in high-solid anaerobic digestion by adding surfactants was attributed to the interaction between lignocelluloses and surfactants and the extraction of biodegradable fractions from the porous structure. An economic analysis showed that adding Tween 20 was likely to make a profit and be more feasible than adding Tween 60 and polyethylene glycol 300. This study confirms the enhancement in biogas production from horticultural waste by adding non-ionic surfactants.

Lignin is endowed with antioxidant activity due to its diverse chemical structure. It is necessary to explore the relationship between antioxidant activity and the chemical structure of the lignin to develop its high-value utilization. Herein, we employed maleic acid (MA) as a hydrotropic agent to preferably isolate the lignin from distinct herbaceous sources (wheat straw and switchgrass) under atmospheric pressure conditions. The resultant acid hydrotropic lignin (AHL) isolated from wheat straw exhibited high radical scavenging rates, up to 98% toward DPPH and 94% toward ABTS. Further investigations indicated that during the MA hydrotropic fractionation (MAHF) process, lignin was carboxylated by MA at γ-OH of the side-chain, providing additional antioxidant activity from the carboxy group. It was also found that the radical scavenging rate of AHL has a positive correlation with carboxyl, phenolic hydroxyl contents, and the S-G (syringyl-guaiacyl) ratio, which could be realized by increasing the MAHF severity. Overall, this work underlies the enhancement origin of the antioxidant property of lignin, which will facilitate its application in biological fields as an efficient, cheap, and renewable antioxidant additive.

The natural aromatic polymer lignin and its lignin-like oligomeric fragments have attracted attention for their antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activities. In this study, a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay was employed to assess the antioxidant capacity of fractionated and partially depolymerized organosolv lignin by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results show significant antioxidant activity for both the lignin and oligomeric fragments, with the EPR measurements demonstrating their efficiency in quenching the free radicals. The EPR data were analyzed to derive the kinetic rate constants. The radical scavenging activity (RSA) of lignins was then determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the results were compared with the EPR method. This two-method approach improves the reliability and understanding of the antioxidant potential of lignin and its derivatives and provides valuable insights for their potential applications in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, food preservation, and cosmetics.

Lignin syringyl to guaiacyl ratio (S/G) has long been suspected to have measurable impacts on biochar formation, but these effects are challenging to observe in biochars formed from whole biomass. When the model bioenergy feedstock Populus trichocarpa (cottonwood), with predictable lignin macromolecular structure tied to genetic variation, is used as feedstock for biochar production, these effects become visible. In this work, two P. trichocarpa variants having lignin S/G of 1.67 and 3.88 were ground and pyrolyzed at 700 °C. Water-demineralization of feedstock was used to simultaneously evaluate any synergistic influences of S/G and naturally-occurring potassium on biochar physicochemical properties and performance. The strongest effects of lignin S/G were observed on specific surface area (S BET ) and oxygen-content, with S/G of 1.67 improving S BET by 11% and S/G of 3.88 increasing total oxygen content in demineralized biochars. Functional performance was evaluated by breakthrough testing in 1% NH 3 . Breakthrough times for biochars were nearly double that of a highly microporous activated carbon reference material, and biochar with S/G of 3.88 had 10% longer breakthrough time than its lower S/G corollary. In this study, maleic anhydride-modified lignin (LG-M), a ROS-cleavable thioketal (TK) bond, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were used to synthesize a lignin-based copolymer (LG-M(TK)-PEG). Doxorubicin (DOX) was attached to the ROS-cleavable bond in the LG-M(TK)-PEG for the preparation of the ROS-activatable DOX prodrug (LG-M(TK-DOX)-PEG). Nanoparticles (NPs) with a size of 125.7 ± 3.1 nm were prepared by using LG-M(TK-DOX)-PEG, and they exhibited enhanced uptake by cancer cells compared to free DOX. Notably, the presence of lignin in the nanoparticles could boost ROS production in breast cancer 4T1 cells while showing little effect on L929 normal cells. This selective effect facilitated the specific activation of the DOX prodrug in the tumor microenvironment, resulting in the superior tumor inhibitory effects and enhanced biosafety relative to free DOX. This work demonstrates the potential of the LG-M(TK-DOX)-PEG NPs as an efficient drug delivery system for cancer treatment.

Excessive usage of biologically toxic fungicides and their matrix materials poses a serious threat to public health. Leveraging fungicide carriers with inherent pathogen inhibition properties is highly promising for enhancing fungicide efficacy and reducing required dosage. Herein, a series of coacervates have been crafted with lignin and surfactin, both of which are naturally derived and demonstrate substantial antifungal properties. This hierarchically assembled carrier not only effectively loads fungicides with a maximum encapsulation efficiency of 95% but also stably deposits on hydrophobic leaves for high-speed impacting droplets. Intriguingly, these coacervates exhibit broad spectrum fungicidal activity against eight ubiquitous phytopathogens and even act as a standalone biofungicide to replace fungicides. This performance can significantly reduce the fungicide usage and be further strengthened by an encapsulated fungicide. The inhibition rate reaches 87.0% when 0.30 mM pyraclostrobin (Pyr) is encapsulated within this coacervate, comparable to the effectiveness of 0.80 mM Pyr alone. Additionally, the preventive effects against tomato gray mold reached 53%, significantly surpassing those of commercial adjuvants. Thus, it demonstrates that utilizing biosurfactants and biomass with intrinsic antifungal activity to fabricate fully biobased coacervates can synergistically combine the functions of a fungicide carrier and antifungal agent against phytopathogens and guarantee environmental friendliness. This pioneering approach provides deeper insights into synergistically enhancing the effectiveness of agrochemicals from multiple aspects, including fungicide encapsulation, cooperative antifungal action, and droplet deposition.

A major factor limiting bark's industrial use is its greater recalcitrance compared to wood. While lignin is widely recognized as a significant contributor, precise characterization of lignin in bark remains sparse, presenting a crucial gap that impedes understanding of its impact. In this study, we employed advanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to analyze bark samples from various species, including willow, poplar, and pine. We established and verified that lignin methoxy peak at 56 ppm serves as a reliable quantitative metric to assess lignin content, with which we calculated the lignin contents in bark are significantly reduced by more than 70% compared to those in wood. Furthermore, in situ characterization revealed significant reduction of β-ether linkage in bark lignin across species, revealing a more condensed and resistant structural configuration. Our results have substantially advanced our comprehension of the composition and structure of native lignin in tree bark.

Lignocellulose is a major biopolymer in plant biomass with a complex structure and composition. It consists of a significant amount of high molecular aromatic compounds, particularly vanillin, syringeal, ferulic acid, and muconic acid, that could be converted into intracellular metabolites such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and hydroxybutyrate (PHB), a key component of bioplastic production. Several pre-treatment methods were utilized to release monosaccharides, which are the precursors of the relevant pathway. The consolidated bioprocessing of lignocellulose-capable microbes for biomass depolymerization was discussed in this study. Carbon can be stored in a variety of forms, including PHAs, PHBs, wax esters, and triacylglycerides. From a biotechnology standpoint, these compounds are quite adaptable due to their precursors' utilization of hydrogen energy. This study lays the groundwork for the idea of lignocellulose valorization into value-added products through several significant dominant pathways.

Depolymerization of the cellulose part in lignocellulose to glucose is a significant step for lignocellulose valorization. As one of the main by-products of agricultural biomass in crop-producing filed, valorization of corn straw has attracted considerable attention. In this study, a two-step depolymerizing strategy of high-pressure CO 2 -H 2 O pretreatment and oxidation-hydrolysis was applied for selective depolymerization of the cellulose component of corn straw to glucose production. Most part of the hemicellulose component could be removed through high-pressure CO 2 -H 2 O pretreatment in the presence of low concentration of acetic acid, and then as high as 32.2 % yield of glucose was achieved in water at 170 °C for 6 h without additional catalyst. Biobased chemicals, crucial for the net-zero chemical industry, rely on lignocellulose residues as a major feedstock. However, its availability and environmental impacts vary greatly across regions. By 2050, we estimate that 3.0-5.2 Gt of these residues will be available from the global forest and agricultural sectors, with key contributions from Brazil, China, India, and the United States. This supply satisfies the growing global feedstock demands for plastics when used efficiently. Forest residues have 84% lower climate change impacts than agricultural residues on average globally but double the land-use-related biodiversity loss. Biobased plastics may reduce climate change impacts relative to fossil-based alternatives but are insufficient to fulfill net-zero targets. In addition, they pose greater challenges in terms of biodiversity loss and water stress. Avoiding feedstock sourcing from biodiversity-rich areas could halve lignocellulose residues-related biodiversity loss without significantly compromising availability. Improvements in region-specific feedstock sourcing, agricultural management and biomass utilization technologies are warranted for transitioning toward a sustainable chemical industry.

Spirulina platensis contains abundant nitrogen-containing organics, which might react with derivatives of cellulose/lignin during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), probably affecting yield, property of hydrochar, and pore development in activation of hydrochar. This was investigated herein by conducting co-HTC of spirulina platensis with cellulose, lignin, and sawdust at 260 °C and subsequent activation of the resulting hydrochars with K 2 C 2 O 4 at 800 °C. The results showed that cross-condensation of spirulina platensis-derived proteins with cellulose/lignin-derived ketones and phenolics did take place in the co-HTC, forming more π-conjugated heavier organics, retaining more nitrogen species in hydrochar, reducing yields of hydrochar, making the hydrochar more aromatic and increasing the thermal stability and resistivity towards activation. This enhanced the yield of activated carbon (AC) by 7 %-20 % and significantly increased specific surface area of the AC from activation of hydrochar of spirulina platensis + lignin to 2074.5 m 2 /g (859.3 m 2 /g from spirulina platensis only and 1170.1 m 2 /g from lignin only). Furthermore, more mesopores from activation of hydrochar of spirulina platensis + cellulose (47 %) and more micropores from activation of hydrochar of spirulina + sawdust (93 %) was generated. In this study, a lignin-based aerogel (LA) was prepared through acid precipitation of BPBL, followed by sol-gel method and freeze-drying. Additionally, a one-step activation-carbonization method was used to acquire nitrogen-doped lignin-based activated carbon aerogel (NLACA). The adsorption and catalytic degradation performance for malachite green (MG) were examined. The specific surface area of NLACA after N-doping was 2644.5 m 2 /g. The adsorption capacity for MG was increased to 3433 mg/g with the presence of nitrogenous functional groups on surface of NLACA compared without N-doping. Meanwhile, non-radical singlet oxygen is the primary active substance and degradation efficiency arrives at 91.8% after the catalytic degradation within 20 min and it has good stability and reuse. Three possible degradation pathways during degradation were analyzed by LC-MS technique. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic data demonstrated conformity with both the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The primary mechanisms of the adsorption for MG dyes on NLACA include hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, attraction of electrostatic and pore filling. Hence, NLACA derived from BPBL acts as a cost-effective and high-performance adsorbent and catalyst for removal of MG in dye wastewater. The growing concerns on environmental pollution and sustainability have raised the interest on the development of functional biobased materials for different applications, including food packaging, as an alternative to the fossil resources-based counterparts, currently available in the market. In this work, functional wood inspired biopolymeric nanocomposite films were prepared by solvent casting of suspensions containing commercial beechwood xylans, cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and lignosulfonates (magnesium or sodium), in a proportion of 2:5:3 wt%, respectively. All films presented good homogeneity, translucency, and thermal stability up to 153 °C. The incorporation of CNF into the xylan/lignosulfonates matrix provided good mechanical properties to the films (Young's modulus between 1.08 and 3.79 GPa and tensile strength between 12.75 and 14.02 MPa). The presence of lignosulfonates imparted the films with antioxidant capacity (DPPH radical scavenging activity from 71.6 to 82.4 %) and UV barrier properties (transmittance ≤19.1 % (200-400 nm)). Moreover, the films obtained are able to successfully delay the browning of packaged fruit stored over 7 days at 4 °C. Lignin-based carbon material can be utilized as carbonaceous adsorbents for the removal of toxic gaseous organic pollutants, while the poor heat-resistance limited its widely application. Here in, B-N co-doped lignin carbon (BN-C) with high thermal stability was synthesized, and the optimized BN-C (1:2) exhibited notably improved heat resistance with the decomposition temperature up to 505 °C, and excellent adsorption capacity for o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) (1510.0 mg/g) and toluene (947.3 mg/g), together with good cyclic stability over 10 cycles for o-dichlorobenzene. The existence of abundant hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with good thermal conductivity contributed to the superior heat-resistance of BN-C (1:2), and the high specific surface area (1764.5 m 2 /g), enriched hydroxyl functional groups and improved graphitization degree contributed to its enhanced adsorption performance. More importantly, BN-C (1:2) supported Ru could effectively remove o-DCB and toluene at wide temperature range (50-300 °C). The alarming rise in antibiotic resistance necessitates urgent action, particularly against the backdrop of resistant bacteria evolving to render conventional antibiotics less effective, leading to an increase in morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Vancomycin-loaded Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) nanocomposites have emerged as a promising strategy in enhancing the eradication of pathogenic bacteria. This study introduces lignin as a novel synergistic agent in Vancomycin-loaded MOF (Lig-Van-MOF), which substantially enhances the antibacterial activity against drug-resistant bacteria. Lig-Van-MOF exhibits six-fold lower minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs) than free vancomycin and Van-MOF with a much higher antibacterial potential against sensitive and resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Remarkably, it reduces biofilms of these strains by over 85 % in minimal biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBIC). Utilization of lignin to modify surface properties of MOFs improves their adhesion to bacterial membranes and boosts the local concentration of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) via unique synergistic mechanism. Additionally, lignin induces substantial cell deformation in treated bacterial cells. It confirms the superior bactericidal properties of Lig-Van-MOF against Staphylococcus species, underlining its significant potential as a bionanomaterial designed to combat antibiotic resistance effectively. Phenolic resins occupy an important position in industrial applications, but phenol, one of the raw materials for synthesis, is a non-renewable resource. Lignin, as a natural polymer containing phenolic hydroxyl groups, alcohol hydroxyl groups and other reactive groups, can replace some of the phenol in the synthesis of phenolic resins, which can reduce the amount of phenol, thus reducing the cost of phenolic resins, while effectively promoting the high value-added use of renewable biomass resources. Due to its low reactivity, alkaline lignin is usually discharged as production waste, unaware that lignin macromolecules can be modified. In this paper, the phenolic monomers were obtained by acid-catalyzed depolymerization of DES (choline chloride/p-toluenesulfonic acid or choline chloride/lactic acid) from waste alkaline lignin, and the recovery rate of the DES solution during the catalytic treatment was more than 85 %, in which the main monomer was 2-methoxy-4-(1-propyl) phenol. The degradation of alkaline lignin is still favorable after five times of DES solvent recovery. The depolymerized lignin monomer replaced phenol by 50 wt% and then ternary co-polymerized with phenol and formaldehyde to form a biomass phenol-based phenolic resin, providing a green route for phenolic resin production. The cost of resin preparation was economically calculated, and it was found that the cost of resin after accumulating 4 cycles of DES treatment was only 51.1 % of that of pure phenolic resin. Lignocellulose is an abundant renewable bio-macromolecular complex, which can be used to produce biomethane and other high-value products. The lignin, presents in lignocellulose is typically regarded as an inhibitor of anaerobic digestion. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a novel selective separation strategy to achieve efficient biomethane production and all-component utilization of biomass. Hence, a combination of two-step pretreatment and solid-state anaerobic digestion was employed to enhance the production of biomethane and to generate valuable chemicals from poplar waste. Optimal conditions (4 % acetic acid, 170 °C, and 40 min) resulted in 70.85 % xylan removal, yielding 50.28 % xylo-oligosaccharides. The effect of a strong acid 4-CSA-based novel three-constituent DES on delignification was investigated from 80 °C to 100 °C; the cellulose content of DES pretreated poplar increased from 64.11 % to 80.92 %, and the delignification rate increased from 49.0 % to 90.4 %. However, high delignification of the pretreated poplar (DES-100 and DES-110) led to a rapid accumulation of volatile organic acids during the hydrolysis and acidogenesis stages, resulting in methanogenesis inhibition. The highest biomethane yield of 208 L/kg VS was achieved with DES-80 (49.0 % delignification), representing a 148 % improvement compared over untreated poplar. We study the effect of electrolytes on the stability in aqueous media of spherical lignin particles (LP) and its relevance to Pickering emulsion stabilization. Factors considered included the role of ionic strength on morphology development, LP size distribution, surface charge, interfacial adsorption, colloidal and wetting behaviors. Stable emulsions are formed at salt concentrations as low as 50 mM, with the highest stability observed at a critical concentration (400 mM). We show salt-induced destabilization of LP aqueous dispersions at an ionic strength >400 mM. At this critical concentration LP flocculation takes place and particulate networks are formed. This has a profound consequence on the stability of LP-stabilized Pickering emulsions, affecting rheology and long-term stability. The results along with quartz microgravimetry and confocal microscopy observations suggest a possible mechanism for stabilization that considers the interfacial adsorption of LP at oil/water interfaces. The most abundant natural renewable resource in the world, lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), has the potential to be exploited as a substitute green feedstock for the synthesis of various chemicals, materials, and biofuels. The annual global production of 13 billion tonnes of LCB offers an opportunity to cater to the increasing energy and materials requirement of process industries and also restricts the discharge of greenhouse gases. Although LCB is enriched with valuable ingredients such as cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose, its recalcitrant nature limits its efficient utilisation. These components of LCB are strongly interlinked with each other, which resists their isolation and conversion valorisation into useful products. To disrupt the complicated structure of LCB and to isolate the lignocellulosic components in pure form, pretreatment is a crucial process in the bio-refinery, ensuring the economic feasibility of downstream processes. This review provides an outline of the structure, composition, and various sources of LCB; and the necessity of the pretreatment. Moreover, this article provides an in-depth analysis of the underlying mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of various pretreatment methods, such as physical, chemical, biological, and physicochemical. Further, the impact of chemical pretreatment techniques on the physicochemical characteristics of the material that is extracted from the biomass is also covered in detail through the rigorous evaluation of performance metrics, including substrate digestibility, sugar yield, inhibitor production, and energy requirements. This review provides a balanced and comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art pretreatment strategies and their impact on biomass valorisation that will be useful to the scientists, engineers, and policy makers interested in biomass conversion technologies., (© 2024. The global pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has had profoundly detrimental effects on our society. To combat this highly pathogenic virus, we turned our attention to an abundant renewable natural aromatic polymer found in wood. Through a chemical modification of Eucalyptus and Japanese cedar wood via acidic microwave solvolysis in equivolume mixture of 2 % (w/w) aqueous H 2 SO 4 , ethylene glycol, and toluene at 190 °C. Subsequently, we separated the resulting solvolysis products through extractions with toluene, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. Among these products, the ethyl acetate extract from Eucalyptus wood (eEAE) demonstrated the highest inhibition effects against the novel SARS-CoV-2. We further divided eEAE into four fractions, and a hexane extract from the ethanol-soluble portion, termed eEAE3, exhibited the most substantial inhibitory rate at 93.0 % when tested at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. Analyzing eEAE3 using pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that its primary components are derived from lignin. Additionally, 1 H- 13 C edited-heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance analysis showed that the solvolysis process cleaved major lignin interunit linkages. Lignin is a complex of organic polymers that are abundantly present in the plant cell wall which considered of emerging substrates for various kinds of value-added industrial products. Lignin has potential use for the production of green nanomaterials, which exhibit improved or different properties corresponding to their parent polymers. Nano lignin has received significant interest in recent years due to its applications in numerous fields. Lignin, the abundant and limited functionality has challenges for its potential uses. Creating advanced functional lignin-derived material like lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) which significantly alter the biological process has great potential for its applications. In the fields of biotechnology, several lignin extraction processes from various raw materials and diverse synthesis techniques, including acid precipitation, dialysis, solvent shifting/solvent exchange, antisolvent precipitation, homogenization, water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion, ultra-sonication, interfacial crosslinking, polymerization, and biological pathway can be employed to produce LNPs. The scientific community has recently become more concerned about the transformation of lignin to lignin nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanocapsules, nanofibers, nanotubes, and nanofilms. Recent research has shown that lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are: non-toxic at adequate amounts (both in vitro and in vivo ), are economical, and can be biodegradable by bacteria and fungi. In promising studies, LNPs have been investigated for their potential applications in gene delivery systems, drug carriers, biocatalysts, tissue engineering, heavy metal absorbers, encapsulation of molecules, supercapacitors, hybrid nanocomposites, and other applications. This current review addresses the recent advances in the synthesis of LNPs, their advanced application in different areas, future perspectives, and challenges associated with lignin-based nanomaterials.

Biomass-based hydrogels have become a research hotspot because of their better biocompatibility. However, the preparation of biomass hydrogels is complicated, and they often need to be modified by introducing other substances. In this study, corncob pretreated with bisulfite (125-185 °C) was used as a raw material to prepare lignocellulose hydrogels. The results showed that directly using the pretreated sample without the washing step lowered the total hydrogel costs while preserving the lignosulfonate (LS) produced during pretreatment. The best tensile (54.1 kPa) and compressive (177.7 kPa) stresses were obtained for the hydrogel prepared from non-detoxified pretreated corncob at 165 °C (NCH-165). The sulfonic acid groups in LS could enhance the interaction between plant cellulose, thus improving its mechanical properties. The capacitor assembled from NCH-165 achieved an energy density of 236.1 Wh/kg at a power density of 499.7 W/kg and a high coulombic efficiency of more than 99 % after 2000 charge/discharge cycles. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials play a vital role in human society, especially in light of the rapid development of electronic communication equipment. Therefore, it is urgent to develop green, high-efficiency EMI shielding materials. Wood, as a renewable raw material, possesses significant structural advantages in studying EMI materials due to its unique 3D pore structure. Herein, we report magnetoelectric lignocellulosic matrix composites derived from the delignified wood for efficient EMI shielding. The composite was fabricated by in-situ polymerization of PEDOT conductive coating and magnetic Fe 3 O 4 in delignified wood. The conductive 3D pore structure of Fe 3 O 4 /PEDOT@wood could effectively cause dielectric loss and multiple internal reflections. Combined with the magnetic loss of Fe 3 O 4 , the material exhibited excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (SE), which could be attributed to the synergistic effect of dielectric and magnetic losses. The Fe 3 O 4 /PEDOT@wood showed excellent conductivity (103 S/m), good magnetism (26.7 emu/g), the EMI SE up to 59.8 dB, and high SE A /SE T ratios of∼84.2 % to 95.7 % at 2 mm in X -band. Moreover, the material exhibited a high compressive strength and tensile strength of 100.8 MPa and 18.1 MPa, respectively. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of sodium lignosulfonate (LS) as a dye adsorbent in the removal of methylene blue (MB) from water by polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration. Various parameters were evaluated, such as membrane molecular weight cut-off, pH, LS dose, MB concentration, applied pressure, and the effect of interfering ions. The results showed that the use of LS generated a significant increase in MB removal, reaching an elimination of up to 98.0 % with 50.0 mg LS and 100 mg L -1  MB. The maximum MB removal capacity was 21 g g -1 using the enrichment method. In addition, LS was reusable for up to four consecutive cycles of dye removal-elution. The removal test in a simulated liquid industrial waste from the textile industry was also effective, with a MB removal of 97.2 %. Utilizing corn straw (CS) mainly composed of lignocellulose to prepare physically modified biochar (PCSB) via cold isostatic pressing (CIP) in order to increase the biochar' s Hg (II) adsorption capacity. The results of the characterization indicated that CIP pretreatment renders PCSB-400' s structure more porous and higher N content of 16.65 %, leading to more N-containing functional groups partaking in the adsorption process. PCSB-400 adsorbed Hg (II) primarily via C/N synergistic complexation and electrostatic attraction between pores, in addition to the presence of redox reactions of surface functional groups on PCSB-400. The adsorption experiment reveals that PCSB-400 has a high selectivity for the adsorption of Hg (II). The adsorption process of Hg (II) by PCSB-400 more closely resembles the Langmuir model and pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics equation. The adsorption quantity at saturation is 282.52 mg/g at 25 °C. A facile biphasic system composed of choline chloride (ChCl)-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) was developed to realize the furfural production, lignin separation and preparation of fermentable glucose from Eucalyptus in one-pot. Results showed that the ChCl/1,2-propanediol/MIBK system owned the best property to convert hemicelluloses into furfural. Under the optimal conditions (MR ChCl:1,2-propanediol  = 1:2, raw materials:DES:MIBK ratio = 1:4:8 g/g/mL, 0.075 mol/L AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O, 140 °C, and 90 min), the furfural yield and glucose yield reached 65.0 and 92.2 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the lignin with low molecular weight (1250-1930 g/mol), low polydispersity (D M  = 1.25-1.53) and high purity (only 0.08-2.59 % carbohydrate content) was regenerated from the biphasic system. With the increase of pretreatment temperature, the β-O-4, β-β and β-5 linkages in the regenerated lignin were gradually broken, and the content of phenolic hydroxyl groups increased, but the content of aliphatic hydroxyl groups decreased. Materials from green resources boast a low carbon footprint, forming the foundation of the circular economy approach in materials science. Thus, in this study, waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was subjected to depolymerization using propylene glycol (PG), and subsequent polycondensation with bio-based maleic anhydride (MA) produced unsaturated polyester resin (b-UPR). Bio-derived acryloyl-modified Kraft lignin (K f L-A) served as a vinyl reactive filler in the b-UPR matrix to create b-UPR/K f L-A composites. The structural characterization of K f L-A and b-UPR involved the use of FTIR and NMR techniques. The mechanical properties of the newly fabricated composites were assessed through tensile strength, Vickers microhardness, and dynamic mechanical tests. The addition of K f L-A to the rigid b-UPR matrix enhanced material flexibility, resulting in less stiff and hard materials while preserving composite toughness. For instance, incorporating 10 wt% of K f L-A in b-UPR led to a 17% reduction in hardness, a 48% decrease in tensile strength, and a 20% reduction in toughness. Positive environmental impact was achieved by incorporation of 64 wt% of renewable and recycled raw material. Analogously prepared b-UPR/K f L composites showed structural inhomogeneity and somewhat better mechanical properties. Transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopies revealed a suitable relationship between mechanical and structural properties of composites in relation to the extent of K f L-A addition. The UL94V flammability rating confirmed that flame resistance increased proportionally with the K f L-A addition. The novel multifunctional active packaging composite film with antimicrobial, antioxidant, water-vapor and UV-barrier, and corrosion resistance properties was successfully prepared from waste biomass. In this study, waste poplar sawdust was pretreated using green liquor to extract black liquor (BL). BL was then mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). PVA-BL-AgNPs film was fabricated by solution casting method, and the microstructure characterization and macroscopic performance testing of the composite film were conducted. The results revealed that PVA-BL-AgNPs film exhibited inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus (inhibition zone: 33.6 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (inhibition zone: 31.6 mm), and Escherichia coli (inhibition zone: 32.0 mm). It could eliminate over 99 % of 2,2-diazodi (3-ethyl-benzothiazol-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radicals and provided 100 % UV-blocking, reducing light-induced food damage. It exhibited the improvement of water-vapor barrier properties and corrosion resistance. In vitro cytotoxicity assays demonstrated that no significant impact occurred on cell proliferation, confirming the safety of the film. Packaging experiments showed that PVA-BL-AgNPs film effectively inhibited milk spoilage and prolonged the shelf-life of bread and bananas. Jatobá-do-cerrado fruit shells, archetypical of lignocellulosic-based biomass, were used as an adsorbent to remove crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) from water. The adsorbent was characterized using various techniques, and kinetic studies showed dye adsorption followed second-order kinetics. An experimental design investigated the effects of pH and temperature on removal efficiency, with a quadratic model fitting the data best. The results suggest pH influences MB's adsorption capacity more than temperature and at 25 °C and pH 8, MB had a desirability value of 0.89, with 95 % removal efficiency. For CV, temperature had a greater influence, with a desirability value of 0.874 at 25 °C and pH 10, and 95 % removal efficiency. Adsorption isotherm studies revealed maximum adsorption capacities of 123.0 mg·g -1 and 113.0 mg·g -1 for CV and MB, respectively. Experimental thermodynamic parameters indicated an endothermic and spontaneous process which it was supported by quantum chemistry calculations.
