Introduction: The synergetic evaluation of the hyperglycemia and the white blood count as leukoglycemic index (LGI) joins a bigger number of adverse events during the internment in patients with ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). Objective: To evaluate the predictive value of the leukoglycemic index (LGI) in the appearing of in-hospital complications in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Method: Multicentral and historic cohort study, which included 1133 patients inserted in the Cuban Registry of Acute Myocardial Infarction, among January 2018 and June 2021. Patients were divided in quartiles and in groups according to the optimal cut-point calculated for the LGI. Results: Optimal cut-point of the ILG to predict complications was 1188.4 (sensibility 61.4%; specificity 57.3%; area under curve 0.609; p < 0.001). The appearing of in-hospital complications was significantly increased in the LGI’s quartiles; as well as in the two groups according to cut-point. The analysis of logistic regression revealed that the LGI was an independent predictor of in-hospital complications (OR [IC 95%] = 1.27 [1.11-1.46]; p = 0.001). When the LGI was associated to the multivariate model, its predictive capability was rose (area under curve 0.813; p < 0.001). Kaplan Meier’s curves showed significant differences among groups of patient (p = 0.030). Conclusions: The LGI is an independent predictor of appearing of in-hospital complications in STEMI. The addition of the LGI to a basal model of risk has a strong positive effect in the prediction of adverse prognosis in patients with STEMI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The populations of Baird's (Centronyx bairdii) and grasshopper (Ammodramus savannarum) sparrows are decreasing as a consequence of the loss of their natural habitat and the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals in farming areas bordering their breeding habitat. Although these two species have been studied from an ecological perspective, there is no research on the presence of abnormalities in their leukocyte and erythrocytes counts, both of them health biomarkers. The objective of this work was to determine the spontaneous rate of polychromatic erythrocytes (PCE), micronucleated erythrocytes (MNE), and nuclear buds (NBs), as well as the leucocyte differential and the heterophil/lymphocyte ratio (H:L), in order to establish the health status of these sparrow species that live in Cuchillas de la Zarca, Durango, Mexico. With this aim, we captured 20 organisms of each species with mist nets. We carried two blood smears per individual which we analysed under the microscope (100x). There were no statistically significant differences among species regarding the frequencies of the various biomarkers, which had similar values to those established for other healthy bird species. Therefore, there is no evidence of genomic instability, nor of genotoxic or cytotoxic effects. Likewise, we detected no alterations in the immune system, based on the leukocyte differential and the H:L ratio evaluation. This is the first study that establishes reference values for these biomarkers among these particular species of sparrows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: To quantify the production of Th1/Th2/Th17 cytokines induced by Ascaris lumbricoides antigens in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) using a multiplex technique. Methods: PBMCs were cultured from individuals with mild A. lumbricoides infection (n = 20) and uninfected individuals (n = 21) and stimulated with A. lumbricoides extract (ExtAscaris), a mix of anti-CD2/CD3/CD28 (CDmix) as a positive control, and only medium (negative control). Cytokines in the supernatants were measured using the BD™ Cytometric Bead Array Human Th1/Th2/Th17 kit, to identify IFN-γ, TNF, IL-10, IL-6, IL-4, IL-2, and IL-17A. Readings were taken on a spectral cytometer (Northern Lights, Cytek, USA), and analysis was performed using R software with packages "tidyverse," "beadplexr," "flowCore," and "arsenal." Cytokine concentrations were calculated using a 5-parameter logistic curve. The t-test was used to compare cases and controls, and statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Cartagena and the participants provided informed consent. This study was financially supported by the Colombian Sistema General de Regalías under the BPIN2020000100405 - BPIN2020000100364. Results: Efficient fluorescence intensity extraction for each cytokine was achieved using detection channel R8 and the "mclust" clustering model (Figure 1). No significant differences were found in the levels of the seven cytokines between cases and controls (Figure 2). Although the IFN-γ response to ExtAscaris was higher in cases than in controls (252.5 ng/mL vs. 173.1 ng/mL), the difference was not significant. IL-17A (detection limit: 18.9 pg/mL) was more detectable in cases than controls (5 cases, 23% vs. 2 controls, 9.5%). IL-4 was only detected in the supernatants from CDmix-stimulated cultures but not with the Ascaris extract (Figure 2). Conclusions: The multiplex technique using spectral flow cytometry combined with open-source software analysis proved applicable for quantifying cytokines induced by A. lumbricoides antigens in PBMCs. However, a more sensitive method is needed to evaluate IL-4 response in the context of ascariasis. The results did not reveal significant differences in cytokine production between cases and controls for the evaluated stimuli. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ASTAXANTHIN , *NILE tilapia , *BLOOD cell count , *DIETARY supplements , *ERYTHROCYTES , *ASPARTATE aminotransferase - Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of astaxanthin on the hematological, biochemical and somatic response of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) orally administered in the feed for a period of 60 days. For the study, 105 tilapia (n=35) from the same spawn were used, constituting the following treatments: Control = animals (not treated with astaxanthin); T100 and T200 = fish treated with 100 and 200 mg of astaxanthin/kg of feed, respectively. There were no hematological alterations in red blood cells counts, hematocrit, hemoglobin, MCV and MCHC. In addition, astaxanthin-fed tilapia presented a better thrombocyte and leukocyte responses with a marked decrease in the number of thrombocytes, lymphocytes and neutrophils. Among treatments, there were no changes in serum levels of total protein, albumin, globulins, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphate. Treatment with astaxanthin resulted in a decrease in triglyceride and glucose levels, as well as increase in hepatosomatic indices. The results of hematological and biochemical analyzes of tilapias demonstrated the clinical safety of this carotenoid, not causing harmful effects to the health of fish. Therefore, the antioxidant activity of this compound in tilapias resulted in an improvement in the leukocyte profile and contributed to hypolipidemic effects at the dose of 200mg of astaxanthin/kg of feed. Differential counting and blood cell morphometry in the lizards Ameivula ocellifera (Squamata: Teiidae) and Tropidurus hispidus (Squamata: Tropiduridae) from the Brazilian semiarid region, with analysis of the effects by hemoparasites. The lizards Ameivula ocellifera and Tropidurus hispidus are sympatric species in the Brazilian semiarid region. Despite being considered in-teresting models for ecological studies, little is known about basic aspects of their biology, such as hematological parameters. Thus, the objective of this work was to perform the differential count of leukocytes and describe the morphometry of erythrocytes and leukocytes in these two species of lizards, with emphasis on hemoparasitism by intracellular protozoa. For this, 30 specimens (15 A. ocellifera and 15 T. hispidus) were used for analysis. After making the slides, a differential count of 100 leukocytes per slide was performed. In addition, 20 erythrocytes and 15 leukocytes were photographed per slide for morphometric analysis. The measurements wrere measured for the parameters area, perimeter, maximum and minimum axes, with the ellipse formulas used for area and perimeter. Interspecific and intraspecific differences (parasitized and non-parasitized lizards) were tested for erythrocyte morphometric parameters, erythrocyte nucleus and leukocytes. The differential count showed that heterophiles were the predominant cell type for both species of lizards, while basophils were the least abundant for A. ocellifera and eosinophils for T. hispidus. As for leukocyte measurements, only the monocyte differed significantly between species, greater in A. ocellifera, and intraspecifically only for the minimum axis parameter, greater in parasitized T. hispidus. Erythrocytes differed between species in terms of cell and nucleus size, being higher in T. hispidus. Among the hemoparasites, found only in T. hispidus, Plasmodium sp. caused more discrete changes in the erythrocyte, while Hepatozoon sp. caused marked macrocytosis and hypochromia in these cells. In general, there does not seem to be a relationship between the differential leukocyte count and hemoparasitism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The infections caused by viruses are increasingly taking leadership in the worldwide, causing millions of cases and thousands of deaths, leukocyte disturbances occur in many cases. The present work aims to; Identify leukocyte alterations in viral infections: semiological and prognostic value. It was carried out by a documentary research based on a systematic review, the databases used were PubMed, SciELO, Elsevier, Embase, Dialnet and Lilacs. Scientific bibliography of the last 10 years was included, English and Spanish languages are included in the bibliographies analyzed, bibliography older than 10 years old was excluded, in addition to excluding clinical studies in animals. Results were evidenced in patients with Covid-19 who did not survive presented a TCD8 cell count of 98.89 compared to 203.98 of patients who survived, there were elevated levels of IL-6 10 times higher than those who survived. It was concluded that in patients with Covid-19, IL-6 levels (> 20 pg / mL), the TCD8 count (<165 cells / L) are a predictor of severity and mortality. In patients with Dengue, it was possible to identify that IL-10 levels (> 63 pg / dL) can be used as a predictor of the severity of dengue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To estimate the reference intervals (RIs) of complete blood count parameters in the Brazilian adult population. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with data from the National Health Survey (Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde – PNS), between 2014–2015. The final sample consisted of 2,803 adults. To establish the RIs, exclusion criteria were applied, outliers were removed and partitions were made by gender, age, and race/skin color. The non-parametric method was adopted. Differences were assessed using the Mann Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests (p≤0.05). Results: There were statistically significant differences for the following hematological parameters based on gender, red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCH, MCHC, eosinophils and absolute monocytes, neutrophils and platelets (p≤0.05). When analyzed by age, the RIs were statistically different in females for hematocrit, MCV, white blood cells and RDW and in males for red blood cells, white blood cells, eosinophils, mean platelet volume, MCV, RDW, and MCH (p≤0.05). For race/color, there were differences in the RIs for parameters of hemoglobin, MCH, MCHC, white blood cells and mean platelet volume, neutrophils and absolute eosinophils (p≤0.05). Conclusion: The differences found in the RIs of some in blood count parameters in Brazilian adults reaffirm the importance of having their own laboratory reference standards. The results can support a more accurate interpretation of tests, adequate identification and disease prevention in Brazil.

- Abstract
Introduction: The leuko-glycaemic index has been proposed as a prognostic marker of death in patients with acute myocardial infarction, but there is uncertainty surrounding its prognostic value to predict one-year mortality. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic value of leukoglycaemic index for one-year mortality in Cuban patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Method: The data were obtained from the medical records and all cause one-year deaths was the primary endpoint. The leuko-glycaemic index was calculated from measurements at admission. The patients were divided into leuko-glycaemic index tertiles to be evaluated. Receiver operating characteristics and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were performed. Cox regression model was used for all multivariable analysis. Results: Three hundred and forty-four patients were assessed (median age, 68 years; 65.7% males; 25.6% diabetic). The mortality rate was 25.6%, being significantly higher in the upper tertile (55.7%, p<0.0001). The deceased patients presented a median of leuko-glycaemic index significantly higher than the survivors (2.18 and 1.34 respectively, p<0.0001). The area under the curve for leuko-glycaemic index was 0.715 and its cut-off value was 2.2. Any leuko-glycaemic index value higher than 2.2 was associated with significantly lower survival (177 vs. 309 days, p<0.0001) and it was an independent predictor of mortality (HR=3.56, CI 95%, 2.09-6.07, p<0.0001). Conclusions: The leuko-glycaemic index is a good predictor for all cause one-year mortality in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Selenium decreases cellular damage caused by oxidative stress and improves the organism physiological response. Leukocytes were evaluated during embryonic development in ewes with consumption of organic selenium. A total of 27 local ewes at the municipality of San Andrés Chiautla, Mexico State, with an average age of 2.5 years, were randomly assigned in two groups, 11 in control group (without Selenium, S-Se) and 16 with oral selenium (C-Se; selenium-enriched yeast) addition at dose of 0.3 ppm, for a period of seven days before Artificial Insemination (AI) consuming a diet based on alfalfa and corn stubble. White cell differential counting was performed on blood smears. Samples were taken before, during and after selenium treatment. Data were analyzed by mixed model, showing significant differences by treatment and time (p ≤ 0.05) in neutrophils; day 9 of embryonic development (5.91 ± 0.89 y 2.11 ± 0.46; S-Se y C-Se, respectively) and basophils amount was at day -3 (1.85 ± 0.31 y 1.05 ± 0.23). Regarding lymphocytes and eosinophils, they showed a difference in time (p ≤ 0.05) but not by treatment (p ≥ 0.05). It is concluded that selenium decreases the number of neutrophils and basophils; after blastocyst formation and four days after starting organic selenium treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate through bibliometric parameters the blood cell changes in patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, described in the literature in 2020. This study used the bibliometric parameters to carry out the research with the creation of a search key to carry out the selection of articles and, through this, analyze the scientific findings quantitatively. The selection of articles was performed in May 2022, without language and year of publication restrictions, in the Web of Science database (Clarivate Analytics, Philadelphia, PA, USA). The search strategy retrieved 26,896 articles in the cited database. A total of 678 articles were evaluated, and only 17 articles had the searched endpoint. The most cited article was: "Dysregulation of Immune Response in Patients with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China", published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. More than 70% of the studies were conducted in China and 100% of them exposed changes in platelet and/or white blood cell parameters. Despite the low rate of selected articles and the need for more robust studies on this topic, we have noticed increasing rates of citations, renowned institutions, and scholars researching on the subject as well as in other countries besides China. Thus, this study developed some indicators to assist in future research on the subject. - Abstract
With the aim to establish the hematological analyte reference limits of clinically healthy adult goats of dairy producing breeds, subjected to the handling and characteristics of intensive production systems in the Mexican Plateau, the blood samples of 2-year old and older goats at different production stages were collected and analyzed. Reference limits (interval in brackets) for hematocrit (0.22-0.36 L/L), erythrocyte count (9.07-18.47 ×1012/L), mean cell volume (MCV) (14.44-27.91 fL), platelets (229-3163 ×109/L), total solids (65.64-84.64 g/L), fibrinogen (0-6 g/L), leukocyte count (3.75-11.47 ×109/L), segmented neutrophils (0.95-4.98 ×109/L), band neutrophils (0-0.16 ×109/L), lymphocytes (1.76-6.44 ×109/L), monocytes (0-0.65 ×109/L), eosinophils (0-1.36 ×109/L) and basophils (0-0.37 ×109/L) were obtained. These values were compared with similar study results. Differences were found mainly in the values for hematocrit, erythrocytes, MCV, platelets, total leukocytes, and lymphocytes; this is due to environmental and feeding differences between the studies. - Abstract
Propolis is a complex resinous product produced by bees Apis mellifera, which has a number of biological activities such as an immunomodulator, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, among others. The purpose of the following study was to perform an in vivo evaluation of the anti-inflammatory properties of a Chilean propolis extract, on the model of atrial edema induced 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13- acetate (TPA) in the mouse auricular pavilion, for later evaluation and histological analysis. The Chilean propolis extract (EPP) used was obtained from an ethanolic, rotaevaporated and lyophilized macerate. It was observed that the EPP significantly decreased edema and inflammatory infiltrate. These results suggest that the ethanolic extract of Chilean propolis possesses potential anti-inflammatory or modulatory effects of the immune system in atrial edema. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organisms that experience stressors and undergo morphophysiological and behavioral changes are called biomonitors. Birds are model organisms for biomonitoring studies because they are sensitive to environmental changes. In this study, the heterophil/lymphocyte ratio (H/L - indicative of chronic stress), prevalence and parasitaemia of hemoparasites were used as biomonitoring tools in Cerrado birds. The objective of this study was to compare the H/L ratio and hemoparasitism of birds between areas with different levels of urbanization and environmental conditions. A total of 1288 birds (41 species) were captured in six Cerrado forest fragments, between 2013-2019, for the production and analysis of blood smears. The forest fragments were classified into rural, peri-urban, and urban, and in each one the levels of noise (anthropic noise) and atmospheric (carbon monoxide) pollutants were measured, and the size of the area occupied by water resources was also calculated in a radius of 1 km². There was a higher H/L ratio in birds captured in urban and peri-urban areas and with high levels of noise and air pollutants, and a lower H/L ratio in individuals from rural areas and with low levels of pollutants. Altogether, 519 (40.2%) individuals were infected with haemosporidian parasites, 516 (40%) with Plasmodium spp. and 13 (1.0%) by Haemoproteus spp. Parasitaemia was not associated with the level of urbanization, but it differed among the six forest fragments, being higher in those where there is a greater amount of water resources. Experimental tests were also carried out with domestic canaries (Serinus canaria). The canaries were divided into two groups; one kept in an urban center (n=20), and another in a rural area far from urbanization (n=20). In both locations, the levels of atmospheric pollutants were measured, carbon monoxide and particulate matter. The experiment lasted 120 days and every 15 days blood collections were made. The H/L ratio was higher in canaries from the urban and more polluted area and increased with time of experiment. Infections by haemosporidian parasites (Plasmodium spp.) were higher in rural canaries, with an average prevalence of 57.1% in rural and 1.11% in urban canaries. Parasitemia was negatively correlated with the H/L ratio in both native birds and canaries, suggesting that individuals may be immunologically active. This study showed that birds that live in urbanized and polluted areas have higher stress indicators (H/L ratio) and that haemosporidian parasites are favored in areas that can offer more resources for vector reproduction and development. These results suggest that the H/L ratio and hemosporid parasites can be used as tools for environmental biomonitoring and as parameters to assess the conditions of birds in degraded environments. ABSTRACT Objective : To establish the usefulness of leukocyte count and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in the second trimester of pregnancy as a predictor of the development of preeclampsia. Design : Case-control study. Institution: Hospital Central "Dr. Urquinaona", Venezuela. Participants : Pregnant women between 17 and 20 weeks who attended prenatal consultation and were followed up to term. Methods: Blood samples were taken from the pregnant women who were followed until delivery to establish whether they developed preeclampsia. Main outcome measures: General characteristics of the patients, values of leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and prognostic efficacy. Results : Of the 504 patients selected, 41 pregnant women developed preeclampsia (group A) and 463 pregnant women were considered as controls (group B). No statistically significant differences were found in overall characteristics at baseline (p = ns). The gestational age at the time of diagnosis of preeclampsia in group A was 35.0 +/3.2 weeks. The benefit of autologous platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) treatment is still under discussion. Variations in PRP products, consequence of the lack of a standardised protocol for the multitude of commercially available blood separation systems and the lack of knowledge of the optimal composition of PRP or its suitability for the proposed indication are some of the reasons behind clinical inconsistencies. The impact of inter‐subject variability in PRP has received less attention in comparison. The purpose of this study was to determine the inter‐subject variability, based on age, in the concentrates prepared by a new blood concentration system. Twenty‐six healthy volunteers of both genders (29‐93 years) were enrolled. Whole blood (WB) was collected from each participant to prepare PRP using the Easy PRP kit. Platelets and white blood cells (WBC) from WB and PRP were analysed after split population by age; patients younger than 65 years (n = 13) and patients ≥65 years old (n = 13). Among the demographic characteristics tested, only age was significantly different between the groups. Cell capture efficiency of the system was specific for each type of blood cell and identical for both age groups. Platelets and WBC in PRP were higher than in WB (P

Case Description: The main objective of this paper was to report the clinical effectiveness of leukocyte- platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) in the treatment of a combined endo-periodontal lesion of an upper first premolar. Clinical Findings: The tooth had a profound abfraction on the vestibular aspect and presented no mobility but revealed a deep pocket measuring of 11 mm on the mesial vestibular aspect and 14 mm on the mesial palatine aspect. The three dimensional image analysis showed total bone loss in the mesial aspect and an extensively bone loss of the vestibular aspect of the vestibular root. Treatment and Outcome: Endodontic treatment was performed and periodontal access surgery (surgical periodontal therapy) was done with the application of autologous L-PRF. Three month and 6 months after surgery, the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) exams showed no bone regeneration in any aspect of the tooth. However, periodontal examination showed a significative improvement in the deepness of surcus. The mesial vestibular aspect had a deep pocket of 3 mm and 5 mm on the mesial palatine aspect showing a reduction in deepness of 8 mm and 9 mm, respectively. Clinical Relevance: The actual treatment for teeth with bad prognosis is the extraction and replacement with implants. Even though implants are capable of restore function and aesthetic, the abuse of this approach have led to the loss of teeth that could be successfully treated with a less invasive technique. The prognosis of teeth with endoperiodontal lesion is poor but could be enhanced with regenerative therapies. Until now there are no clinical trials and just four case report about the treatment of these teeth with platelet rich fibrin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The Gaucher disease is a metabolic disorder due to deficiency or absence of acid β-glucosidase enzyme. The diagnosis is clinically suspected, but requires confirmation by measuring the activity of acid β-glucosidase enzyme in leukocytes (gold standard) or in dried blood on filter paper. Objective: To assess the validity of the measurement of acid β-glucosidase enzyme activity in dried blood on filter paper compared to the standard of gold, for the diagnosis of Gaucher disease in patients with clinical suspicion. Methodology: A systematic review of literature was carried out. A PICO question was constructed and validated. A generic search strategy was used based on the key terms (Gaucher Disease and Dried Blood Spot Analysis). Two independent evaluators reviewed and assessed the quality, and extracted information from the articles. Results: Discarding the duplicates, 47 articles were obtained. Four complete texts were evaluated, and three of them were excluded when applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. The article that was included had an excellent quality and showed that the enzymatic activity of glucocerebrosidase in dried blood had a sensitivity of 82.3%, a specificity of 94.0% with a cut-off of 0.0-2.75, a sensitivity of 88.2% and specificity of 88.5% with a cut-off point of 0.0-4.4. Conclusions: The enzymatic measurement of acid β-glucosidase in dried blood is an excellent test for an initial diagnosis of Gaucher disease; however, it is not a conclusive proof. - Abstract
Acute cholecystitis is an inflammation of the vesicular wall whose treatment is purely surgical: a laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the procedure of choice. This can be converted intraoperatively due to complications of the intervention, patient factors or factors associated with the surgeon. The aim of this study was to establish the frequency and the association of conversions of laparoscopic cholecystectomies based on hematological laboratory tests and abdominal ultrasound as well as sociodemographic factors. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, observational and retrospective study that was carried out from January 1 to November 3, 2015. Clinical histories of patients who had been with diagnosed with benign vesicular pathologies who underwent vesicular surgical procedures were reviewed. Results: Of the cases reviewed, 35.5% patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomies, and of these cases 42.8% of the procedures were converted to conventional surgery. The majority of the patients were women (72.8%), but conversions were most frequent among men. The most frequent preoperative diagnosis was cholelithiasis (98.3%). Age greater than 50 years presented an odds ratio of 0.55, while leukocytosis had an odds ratio of 0.40, both variables were statistically significant (P = <0.05). Conclusions: It was determined that ages over 50 years and/or a leukocyte count over 10,000 mm3 are risk factors for failure of laparoscopic cholecystectomies. In addition, factors related to the surgeon must be taken into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although resting immune function is not very different in athletes compared with non-athletes periods of intensified training (overreaching) in already well trained athletes can result in a depression of immunity in the resting state. Illness-prone athletes appear to have an altered cytokine response to antigen stimulation and exercise. Having low levels of salivary IgA secretion also makes athletes more susceptible to upper respiratory tract infections. Overtraining is associated with recurrent infections and immunodepression is common, but immune functions do not seem to be reliable markers of impending overtraining. There are several possible causes of the diminution of immune function associated with periods of heavy training. One mechanism may simply be the cumulative effects of repeated bouts of intense exercise (with or without tissue damage) with the consequent elevation of stress hormones, particularly glucocorticoids such as cortisol, causing temporary inhibition of TH-1 cytokines with a relative dampening of the cell-mediated response. When exercise is repeated frequently there may not be sufficient time for the immune system to recover fully. Tapering has been described as a gradual reduction in the training load which allows the recovery of physiological capacities that were impaired by previous intensive training and permits further training-induced adaptations to occur accompanied by competition performance enhancements. The majority of the studies that have examined the recovery of immunoendocrine responses during 1-3 week tapers in trained athletes have mainly reported enhanced performance, often accompanied by increased anabolic activity, reduced physiological stress and restoration of mucosal immunity and immune function.

With the increasing advancement of poultry, problems with management and metabolic changes in birds began to appear on farms, especially heat stress. As it is a country with a tropical climate, temperature diversity is an important stressor to be considered by producers. In addition to thermal stress, several stressors deserve attention from producers, especially in the pre-slaughter management of birds. Capture techniques, improved transport and pre-slaughter waiting time planning are necessary for the best animal welfare, resulting in a better product offered to the consumer. When animals are subjected to adverse conditions, hormonal and hematological stimulation mechanisms are triggered with the intention of preparing and providing the necessary resources for the organism to face the compensatory emergency demands, aiming to maintain its balance. The objective of this literature review is to report the main changes that occur in hematological cells and plasma hormones during stress in poultry production, reporting the future perspectives of these analyses.

Introduction Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is formed by an autologous blood concentrate, with properties that promote cell proliferation and regenerationof bone, gingival and epithelial tissue. Objective To compare four different procedures for processing as well as obtaining PRF, and analyzing their formation through laboratory techniques. The purpose of the study is to validate a method that produces higher quality PRF for oral surgery use in different branches of dentistry. Material and method The experiment consisted of collecting blood from 12 volunteers, and processing each patient’s sample in 4 different ways. In the following two-stage process analysis, the first, quantitative, step was to analyze the samples' platelet-poor plasma (PPP),with a Neubauer Hemocytometer to count blood components. In the second, qualitative step, the sample’s PRF were analyzed under microscopy using histological slides. Result The statistical analysis of the leukocyte, red blood cell and platelet count did not show any significant distinction when comparing different processes. Histological analysis of the PRF showed fibrin network with platelet aggregation, several leukocytes and presence of red blood cells, with double centrifuged samples presenting more white blood cells than the others. Conclusion: Among the analyzed procedures, the sample centrifuged once at 3000 RPM (1900 G) for 10 min showed the best quality PRF.

Few studies have checked the impact of the hormonal/immunological dimorphism of patients on the cellular composition of platelet-rich plasma products (PRP). Whole blood (WB) from 26 volunteers was concentrated using a device previously characterized. Platelet and white blood cell (WBC) counts in WB and PRP were compared between genders, and after the population was split into pre (≤50 years)- and post (>50 years)-menopausal ages. In WB, platelet–total WBC densities were comparable in men and women. The phagocytic cell composition differed (p ≤ 0.04). After dividing by ages, phagocytic cell discrepancies were linked to women > 50 years (p ≤ 0.05), and differences emerged in lymphocyte counts (lower in >50 years groups, within and between genders, p ≤ 0.05). In PRP, densities were significantly higher, but the PRP/WB ratios varied according to blood cell (lower for phagocytic cells) and between subjects (more favorable at a lower density of a particular blood cell in WB). This “system compensatory efficiency” reduced/reverted PRP differences in the leukocyte composition between genders/age–sex groups in WB. In PRP, neutrophils were higher in younger men than older women (p < 0.05). WB lymphocyte differences between age–sex groups persisted. Age is a more determining factor than sex in the preparation of PRP. Post-menopause, sexual dimorphism strongly influences the composition of leukocytes, also conditioned by the capture efficiency of the system.

RESULTADOS: O grupo TM apresentou valores maiores para o número de leucócitos (12,77±2,0 x 17,25±2,4 10³/mm³), linfócitos (8,87±1,0 x 12,5±2,1 10³/mm³) e neutrófilos (0,99±0,5 x 3,18±1,0 10³/mm³), pOBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of moderate (MPT) and intense physical training (IPT) on the white blood cell profile and the microbicide activity of alveolar macrophages in 29 Wistar male rats. Clofazimine and clarithromycin are used to treat leprosy and infections caused by Mycobacterium avium complex. Little data on the toxicity of co-administration of these two drugs are available. Here we evaluated the potential adverse effects of polytherapy with these two drugs in male Wistar rats by determining WBCs counts and other blood cell counts, neutrophilic phagocytosis, and burst oxidative, by flow cytometry. We observed an increase in WBCs, in multiple-dose regimens, and in polymorphonuclear cells, in both single- clarithromycin only and multiple dose regimens. We also observed a reduction in mononuclear cell counts in single and multiple doses. The drugs seem to reverse the mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cell ratio. An increase in oxidative burst was observed in animals treated with the drugs administered either individually or combined. In conclusion, clofazimine and clarithromycin change WBCs counts. Our results may contribute for a better understanding of the mechanisms related to the effects of co-administrating the two drugs.

This work sought to evaluate the effects of chronic intake of flaxseed upon hematologic parameters and immunological findings on body development of Wistar rats. Female Wistar rats were used after gestation. They were randomly assigned into two groups during lactation period: Control group (CG), fed with casein based diet, made up of 17% protein and flaxseed group (FG), fed with casein based diet with the addition of 25% flaxseed. At weaning, 12 male pups of each group continued to receive the experimental diets of their mothers (with only 10% of protein) until adult age, when they were killed at 250 days of life aiming at blood collection. At 250 days old FG presented significant reduction in body mass (p < 0.000) and higher levels of hemoglobin (p = 0.019) and albumin (p = 0.030) than CG. It was observed smaller percentage of segmented lymphocytes (p = 0.016) in rats from FG and bigger percentage of segmented leucocytes (p = 0.023) when compared to CG. The chronic consumption of flaxseed altered hematologic and immunological indicators in adult Wistar rats. Supplementation with flaxseed seems to be beneficial to maintenance or reduction of body mass.

The action of the "Stress Factor Ostrich (Arenales - Fauna and Flora)" was tested in the release of superoxide anion by cells in the peripheral blood of rhea (Rhea americana). Sixteen samples of 0.5mL of venous blood were collected through the jugular vein in the morning and placed in heparinized tubes. The leukocytes were separated into polymorphonuclear (PMN) and mononuclear (MN). The production of superoxide anion by phagocytes of peripheral blood was determined using the chromogen ferricytochrome C. There was a reduction of superoxide by MN cells in the presence of "Stress Factor Ostrich" indicating a positive influence of product against oxidative stress. Furthermore, future researches, such as the evaluation of other reactive oxygen intermediates and antioxidant enzymes, researches.
