Objective: To investigate and compare the factors that motivated students to study dentistry in countries with similar background (Albania, Croatia and the Republic of Northern Macedonia) and to as-sess whether or not their motivation changed during time. Material and methods: In 2014/2015,cross-sectional studies were conducted in state funded dental schools in Tirana (Albania), Zagreb(Croatia) and Skopje (North Macedonia) to assess student views on their career motivation. All den-tal students from the first, third and final years of study were invited to participate. The participationwas voluntary and anonymous. A five-item questionnaire was translated into languages of the par-ticipating countries. Ethics approval was granted by the Ethics Committee of the University of SaintsCyril and Methodius, Skopje. Objectives: To examine the effect of two aging protocols on the chemical and phase composition as well as the surface state of monolithic translucent zirconia ceramics. Material and Methods: Translucent zirconia ceramics KATANA-Zirconia STML with different surface treatments (no treatment, K1, K2; glazed, G1-G8; polished, P1-P8) underwent testing in order to examine how the two aging protocols (three-hour hydrothermal degradation in an autoclave at 134 °C and 2 bars: G1-G4, P1-P4, and sixteen-hour chemical degradation in four-percent acetic acid at 80 °C (ISO 6872): G5-G8, P5-P8) affect chemical composition, particularly the share of stabilizing yttrium oxide (Energy Dispersive XRay Fluorescence – EDXRF), phase composition (X-ray diffraction – XRD) and surface state in terms of roughness and gloss. Results: Aging protocols did not affect the tested chemical composition stability of specimens and a high share of stabilizing yttrium-oxide (≥10% of total content), which correlates with the absence of monoclinic phase. A decrease in gloss on all specimens is statistically significant. Chemical degradation substantially increased the surface roughness of tested specimens. Conclusions: Translucent monolithic zirconia demonstrated a stable chemical composition and resistance to tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation. Surface gloss was significantly reduced, especially in polished specimens. Contrary to glazed specimens, the tested polished specimens manifested an increase in surface roughness. Glazing the surface of translucent monolithic zirconia produces better esthetic, tribological and hygienic effects than polishing.

Aim The aim this study was to evaluate the factors that influence the presence or absence of the interproximal papilla between implants adjacent to the teeth or other implants, through clinical and radiographic evaluation. Material and methods The non-probabilistic sample comprised 44 patients of both genders aged between 21 and 68 years, rehabilitated with 114 osseointegrated implants. Through a retrospective clinical study, the patients were divided according to the presence or absence of the interproximal papilla: Group 1 - Absence of Papilla, Group 2 - Partial Presence of Papilla and Group 3 - Total Presence of Papilla. The success of the implants, the periodontal biotype, and the vertical and horizontal distances of the interproximal regions included in the study were evaluated. Results Of the 114 implants, 46.5% were considered unsuccessful, and bleeding was present in 29.8%. The periodontal biotype presented as thin and scalloped was found in 85.1% of the regions. The evaluation of the groups according to the confirmation of the interproximal space showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.007), with 61.9% of the wide and long interproximal spaces classified as Group 1, while 31% of the narrow and short interproximal spaces were classified as Group 3. Conclusion It was concluded that the morphology of the interproximal space was the factor that was most strongly associated with the presence or absence of the interproximal papilla.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare clinical, intra-surgical, 2D (panoramic) and 3D (CBCT)-based parameters in assessing molar furcation involvement (FI). Materials and Methods: Six patients with generalized periodontitis Stage II to IV, Grade B and C who were scheduled for the periodontal flap surgical treatment were recruited in the study. In total, 38 molar teeth with 93 furcation sites were analysed. All subjects had comprehensive periodontal examination, which included an assessment of molar FI using Naber’s probe according to modified Glickman’s classification. Periodontal surgery was performed in patients with at least one maxillary molar with probing depth of ≥6 mm. This probing demonstrated lower grade of FI compared with intra-surgical findings. Objectives: Programming of joint mechanism/parameters (sagittal condylar inclination and Bennett angle) of adjustable dental articulators is a prerequisite for performing positions and movements of the mandible. The aim of the study was to test significant differences between the two methods (wax eccentric records and Arcus Digma device) of measuring these joint parameters by using three different dental articulators (SAM 3, Protar 7; and Artex CR). Materials and Methods: Thirty asymptomatic younger (age 25.7 ± 2.9 years) subjects (dental medicine students) divided by gender, with normal occlusion (Angle class I) participated in the study. After taking anatomical impressions of both dental arches, master casts were made of hard dental plaster for each subject. The values of the left and right sagittal condylar inclination and Bennett angle by the two methods of wax eccentric protrusive and lateral records and Arcus Digma device were measured for the purpose of programming the mentioned joint parameters in three different articulator systems. Objectives: to determine the mechanical properties of hybrid and high-viscosity glass ionomer cements. Compressive strength and hardness of three glass ionomer cements (GIC) were measured: Ketac ™ Universal Aplicap ™, EQUIA Fil® and EQUIA FORTE Fil®, and the SEM sample analysis were performed. Material and Methods: The samples for measuring the compressive strength were prepared using silicone molds with standard dimensions of 6 mm x 4 mm and stored in deionized water for five days, while the samples for hardness measurement were prepared using Teflon molds with a cylindrical opening in the middle, dimensions 2 mm in height and 5 mm in width. For each material, one sample was made (n = 1) and stored in deionized water at 37ºC for 25 days. A representative sample of each material was analyzed using SEM. Objective Turner syndrome (TS) and Klinefelter syndrome (KS) represent the two most common X chromosome aneuploidies, each associated with systemic disruptions to growth and development. Effects of these conditions on tooth crown morphology are explored in a sample of Croatian individuals. Materials and methods The sample included 57 TS, 37 KS and 88 control individuals. Dental crown morphology was scored on dental casts according to the Turner-Scott Dental Anthropology System. Results Incisor shoveling and the hypocone were significantly different between TS individuals and both control and KS individuals. Individuals with TS exhibit lower grades of expression than either group. Furthermore, the number of lingual cusps on the mandibular premolars, the hypoconulid on the mandibular second molar, and cusp 7 on the mandibular first molar were significantly different, though pair-wise comparisons did not elucidate these differences. Tuberculum dentale, distal accessory ridge, and Carabelli's trait were expressed similarly to the control. KS individuals were not significantly different from control individuals for any trait, though this may be related to sample size. Conclusions Previous studies suggest the loss of an X chromosome has a reducing effect on dental crown morphology, which is confirmed in this research. TS individuals exhibit generally simpler dental morphology compared to the control sample, though some traits are expressed comparably to the control sample. The effects of KS are less clear. Though previous studies suggest that the presence of an extra X chromosome increases dental crown dimensions, there was no notable effect on crown morphology in this study.

Objective. Polymerization of light-cured resin-based materials is well documented; however, the intensity of the activating light can be reduced by passage through air, dental structure, or restoration compromising the physical and mechnical properties of the restoration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the depth of cure of different light cured composite resins polymerized directly or transdental, through enamel and enamel/dentin tissues. Material and methods. Five composite resins were selected for this experiment: SureFil SDR, Dentsply (SDR), Filtek Supreme Plus, 3M ESPE (FSP), Aelite LS, Bisco (ALS), Filtek LS, 3M ESPE (FLS), and TPH, Dentsply (TPH). Thirty specimens of each material were prepared with 2- or 4-mm thickness. The specimens were light-cured (Elipar 2500, 3M ESPE) for 40 sec using three different protocols: direct or transdental, through a disc of enamel with 1 mm of thickness, and a disc of enamel and dentin with 2 mm of thickness. Eight Vickers microhardness (VH) measurements were taken from each specimen, four on top and four on bottom surface (Micromet, Buehler, 100 g per 15 sec). Data was analyzed with ANOVA three-way, Tukey HSD post-hoc (α = .05). Results. Bottom surfaces of specimens exhibited statistically significant lower Vickers microhardness than the top surfaces for all composite resin evaluated, regardless of the curing conditions, except for the SDR when direct light-cured. Objectives: The aim of this cross sectional study was to analyze the method error and reliability in acoustic pharyngometry and rhinometry and to analyze the difference between standing and sitting position in acoustic pharyngometry and rhinometry.Material and Methods: The sample comprised 38 healthy subjects (11 men and 27 women) as part of a control group in another study. The subjects underwent repeated measures of acoustic pharyngometry and rhinometry in standing and sitting position. Upper airway dimensions in terms of volume, minimum cross-sectional areas (MCA) and distances were evaluated using the Eccovision® Acoustic Pharyngometer and Rhinometer. Method error and reliability were analyzed using paired t-test, Dahlberg's formula and the Houston reliability coefficient, and differences between body positions were analyzed using paired t-test.Results: There was no systematic error in the repeated measures except for the distance to MCA in the left nostril in sitting position (P = 0.041). The method error for the pharyngometry ranged between 0.001 to 0.164 cm/cm2/cm3 and the reliabity was 0.99. The method error for rhinometry ranged between 0.001 to 0.37 cm/cm2/cm3 and the reliability between 0.99 to 1. Difference between standing and sitting position was found only in the pharyngeal airway in terms of volume (P = 0.025) and mean area (P = 0.009) with smaller airway in sitting position.Conclusions: The results indicate that acoustic pharyngometry and rhinometry are reliable methods to perform repeated measures of the upper airway dimensions especially in the standing mirror position. It may be essential to perform the measures with the patient positioned in the same body position each time.

Objectives Previous studies of variation in mandibular foramen characteristics with age have involved comparison in different populations, but few data, between non-atrophic and atrophic mandibles are available. The aim of this original article was to compare the position, shape and area of the mandibular foramen between non-atrophic and atrophic mandibles. Material and Methods Morphometric methods were used to study the mandibular foramen variation. Fifty adult dry mandibles from the laboratory of anatomy were selected. Mandibles were considered non-atrophic if the distance between the base and alveolar ridge was homogeneous and greater than 25 mm in the anterior region and 20 mm in the posterior region. Conversely, mandibles were considered atrophic if that distances were lower than those described to a minimum of 11 mm in all areas. All measurements were performed with a digital caliper. For statistical analysis, the admitted level of significance was 5%. Results When non-atrophic mandibles were compared to atrophic ones, the mandibular foramen shifted significantly to an anterior position (mean difference [MD]: 4.81 mm; P < 0.0001) and to an inferior position (MD: 3.04 mm; P < 0.0001) and changed from an elliptical shape to round one, with a significant decrease in its area (MD: 3.66 mm2; P < 0.05). Conclusions The results indicate that there are significant differences in the position, shape and area of the mandibular foramen between non-atrophic and atrophic mandibles. These data should be considered in anaesthetic techniques and surgical procedures to prevent vascular and nervous lesions.

Objectives The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the relation of the infraorbital canal course with the maxillary sinus using cone-beam computed tomography. Material and Methods A total of 1000 infraorbital canals (IOC) were examined from 500 cone-beam computed tomography scans. IOCs were classified into three types based on the degree of protrusion into the sinus. The presence of Haller cells and mucosal thickening in the sinus were evaluated. The length of bony septum from the canal to the sinus wall (D1), the distance at which protrusion begins posterior to the inferior orbital rim (D2), the vertical distance from the canal to the sinus roof (D3), and the vertical distance from the canal to the sinus floor (D4) were measured. Results The prevalence of IOC protrusion into the sinus was 8.8%. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of Haller cells between IOC types (P < 0.01). However, no significant correlation was found between IOC types and the presence of mucosal thickening (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the mean D1, D2, and D3 between the genders (P > 0.05). The mean D4 was significantly higher in males than in females (P < 0.05). Conclusions The protrusion of infraorbital canals into the sinus is a common variation that must be considered to prevent accidental injury. Our findings suggest that the risk of injury to the descending canals is very low during routine dentoalveolar procedures because the protruded canal is not close to the sinus floor.

Objective Endodontically treated teeth may require posts for retaining the core and replacing the coronal structures that have been lost. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the push-out bond strength between different types of post cemented with different types of luting cement at different types of root level. Materials and Methods In this in-vitro study, a total of 48 single-rooted permanent human teeth were decoronated, and the roots were treated endodontically. Following post space preparation, the sample was divided into four groups (n= 12 each) based on the types of post and cement. Two different types of post [GC everStick®POST (ES) and Parapost® Fiber LuxTM (PF)], and two different types of cement [G-CEMTM (G), and RelyXTM Unicem (R)] were used according to the manufacturer's instructions. All roots were sectioned at the coronal and middle thirds with a thickness of 3±0.1mm. The Push-out bond strength (PBS) test was performed using a universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 0.5mm/ min. The bond strength values were recorded, and the data were analyzed using the SPSS program. Apart from descriptive statistics, three-way ANOVA was used for the interaction of the independent variables (post, cement, and root level). For differences between the groups, the Mann-Whitney U test was used. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant for all analyses. Results Push-out bond strength of samples at the middle level (11.38±10.31 MPa), with PF posts (11.18±9.98 MPa), and of those luted with RelyXTM Unicem cement (13.26±8.73 MPa) was higher than that of their counterparts. The PBS means of RelyXTM Unicem cement at both root levels were much higher than PBS means of G-CEMTM cement. Three-way ANOVA test revealed a significant effect for each variable with a higher effect of cement (Sum of Squares= 1310.690; P< 0.001). No significant difference (P= 0.153) was found between the coronal and middle parts and between ES and PF posts (P= 0.058). However, a highly significant difference (P< 0.001) was found between RelyXTM Unicem and G-CEMTM cements. Conclusion The type of cement had a significant effect on push-out bond strength with RelyXTM Unicem which had higher values than G-CEMTM. However, the type of post and root level had no significant effect on PBS, although Parapost® Fiber LuxTM and middle root level had higher values than their counterparts.

Objectives: The aim was to investigate the efficacy of single injections of two different hyaluronic acid products, Flex Barrier and Revident, in reducing the size of black triangles to treat Nordland-Tarnow Class I and II recessions. Material and Methods:Forty adult patients were recruited with at least two upper and two lower interdental papilla defects in the front region between canine teeth. According to the Nordland-Tarnow classification of papillary defects, both Class I and Class II recessions were included in the investigation. Patients were randomly assigned to experimental groups to receive single injections of two different hyaluronic acid products, either Flex Barrier or Revident. The untreat-ed sites served as controls. Photographs were taken before and immediately after the treatment, and again after one week and one month. Objectives The aim of this retrospective multicentre cohort study was to compare clinical outcomes, soft tissues conditions and differences in marginal bone loss between implants with a laser-microgrooved collar placed in posterior maxillary extraction sockets grafted by 4 to 5 months, and in posterior maxillary pristine bone (spontaneously healed posterior maxillary extraction sockets) by means of osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation, over a period of 5 years after functional loading. Material and Methods Patients of Group 1 underwent extractions with sockets preservation using porcine-derived bone, covered with collagen membrane. Group 2 underwent extractions without socket preservation. Patients of Group 1 received implants in grafted sites, and Group 2 received implants in spontaneously healed bone using a maxillary sinus lift with crestal approach. Results Over the observation period, the overall clinical success rate in Group 1 and Group 2 was 98% and 100%, respectively, with no differences between the procedures and implants used. Cumulative radiographic marginal bone loss ranged from 0.03 to 0.39 mm after 60 months of functional loading. There were no statistically significant differences in marginal bone loss between short and standard-length implants placed in grafted extraction sockets and in pristine bone. Conclusions Short and standard implants with a laser-microgrooved collar, placed in posterior maxillary extraction sockets grafted by 4 to 5 months, and in posterior maxillary pristine bone (spontaneously healed posterior maxillary extraction sockets) by means of osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation, exhibited no statistical difference in success rate, clinical parameters and marginal bone loss.

Objectives Evidence on the clinical performance of recently introduced dental implants in titanium-zirconium alloy is sparse. The aim of the present pilot study with randomized controlled design is to compare changes in supporting structures around dental titanium-zirconium alloy implants to commercially pure titanium implants. Material and Methods The present material includes consecutive patients referred to a specialist clinic in Sweden. Two patient groups treated with dental implants in two different materials - titanium (Ti) and titanium-zirconium (TiZr) - were defined after block randomisation for smoking. In total, 40 implants installed in 21 patients were available for one-year follow-up. Marginal bone level, soft tissue height and width of keratinised mucosa were registered at baseline and at one-year follow-up. Results At implant level, the test group (TiZr) yielded significant marginal bone loss (P < 0.001) after one year. Additionally, marginal bone loss after one year was significantly higher for TiZr implants (P < 0.001) as compared to traditional Ti implants. Soft tissue dimensions were stable throughout the evaluation time for both implant materials. Conclusions One-year results indicate more pronounced initial marginal bone loss for dental implants in titanium-zirconium alloy as compared to implants made of commercially pure titanium.

Objectives The aim of presented cross-sectional and observational study was to determine the prevalence of late oral complications of patients with head and neck cancer who underwent radiotherapy, by clinical and laboratory analyses. Material and Methods Fifty-five patients, 43 (78.2%) men and 12 (21.8%) women, mean age 60; range 38 to 87 years, who have completed radiotherapy for head and neck cancer for at least 6 months were enrolled. The presence of xerostomia, hyposalivation, oral candidiasis, and type of oral yeasts were correlated with post-radiotherapy period. A control group, age and gender matched, was used for comparisons. The Pearson’s Chi-square or Fischer’s exact test was used at a significance level of 5%. Results The mean post-radiotherapy period was 32 months. The oral complications found were xerostomia (45/55, [81.8%]), hyposalivation (44/55 [80%]) and oral candidiasis (15/55 [27.2%]). Xerostomia and hyposalivation was statistically higher in the study group when compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The presence of yeast occurred in 39 (70.9%) of the patients in the study group, and Candida albicans was the most prevalent etiological agent in 25 (64.1%) of those patients (P < 0.05). Conclusions Xerostomia and hyposalivation were the more prevalent late oral complications related to radiotherapy. Oral candidiasis was also observed, although its prevalence was lower. The need for long-term dental follow-up of patients who underwent radiotherapy of the head and neck cancer is mandatory.

Objective: The need for improving oral health in the Republic of Croatia was based on health indicators andpoor oral health status and resulted in the implementation of measures to improve the use of dental health care for schoolchildren through the national program called “Dental Passport”, which began in the 2017/2018 school year. Purpose: The aim of this study was to present the content and results of its implementation and to analyse them with emphasis on the sustainability and inclusion of the program and its implementation in preventive activities and procedures. Material and Methods: The data were collected from the completed “Dental Passport” forms from September 2017 to August 2018. The dental examinations and diagnostic-therapeutic procedures were recorded in The Central Health Information System of Croatia. Results: In the school year 2017/2018, 24,729 6th grade elementary school tudents visited a dentist. The response rate in the Republic of Croatia was 68%. According to the CEZIH data, in the period from September 1 to December 31 2017, an increase in the number of first examinations and diagnostic-therapeutic procedures was observed in children aged 12 years, compared to the same peri-od in 2015. The least reported preventive procedures in preschool children and 6th grade students were fissure sealing and sealing restorations, while motivating and instructing children on oral hygiene were the most common reported procedures. Conclusion: Good organization of work in school medicine pro-vides the basis for the implementation of dental programs involving schoolchildren. However, greater motivation of the dental health care provider in the implementation of preventive procedures and motivation of parents and patients for a more active involvement in the “Dental Passport” program are important determinants in further implementation and improvement of oral health in children.

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of a single intraoperative injection of methylprednisolone on short-term haematological parameters following surgical removal of mandibular third molars.Material and Methods: Fifty-two patients with indications for surgical removal of bilateral impacted mandibular third molars were included in a randomized, split-mouth and double-blinded study design. Each molar were randomly allocated into one of following four groups: 20 mg methylprednisolone, 30 mg methylprednisolone, 40 mg methylprednisolone and placebo. Peripheral blood samples were obtained before and three days after surgery. Haematological parameters involving haemoglobin, white blood cell count and C-reactive protein (CRP) were evaluated and expressed as mean changes. Level of significance was 0.05. Furthermore, outcomes were correlated for age, sex, smoking and time of surgery.Results: There were no significant differences in postoperative haematological parameters with different doses of methylprednisolone compared with placebo. Peripheral blood samples revealed decreased level of haemoglobin and increased level of leucocytes and CRP in each group. Smokers displayed a significant lower level of haemoglobin and CRP compared with non-smokers (P < 0.05) and level of eosinophils decreased significantly with increasing age (P < 0.05).Conclusions: This study indicates that a single intraoperative injection of methylprednisolone seems not to cause suppression of short-term haematological parameters compared with placebo following surgical removal of mandibular third molars.

Contains fulltext : 232819.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present in vivo study was to evaluate whether pericard collagen membranes coated with ancillary amounts of testosterone and alendronate in a poly-lactic glycolic acid (PLGA) carrier as compared to uncoated membranes will improve early bone regeneration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In each of 16 minipigs, four standardized mandibular intraosseous defects were made bilaterally. The defects were filled with Bio-Oss(®) granules and covered with a non-coated or coated membrane. Membranes were spray-coated with 4 layers of PLGA containing testosterone and alendronate resulting in 20, 50 or 125 μg/cm(2) of testosterone and 20 µg/cm(2) alendronate (F20, F50, F125). Non-coated membranes served as controls (F0). Animals were sacrificed at 6 and 12 weeks after treatment. Qualitative and quantitative histological evaluations of bone regeneration were performed. Differences between groups were assessed by paired Student's t-test. RESULTS: Light microscopical analysis showed new bone formation that was in close contact with the Bio-Oss(®) surface without an intervening non-mineralized tissue layer. Histomorphometric analysis of newly formed bone showed a significant 20% increase in area in the F125 coated membrane treated defects (40 [SD 10]%) compared to the F0 treated defects after 6 weeks (33 [SD 10]%, P = 0.013). At week 12, the total percentage of new bone was increased compared to week 6, but no increase in newly formed bone compared to F0 was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The data from this in vivo study indicate that F125 collagen membranes coated with testosterone and alendronate resulted in superior bone formation (+24%) when normalized to control sites using uncoated membranes.

International audience; Objectives: This randomized controlled in vitro 4-arm trial study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of SoproLife® in detecting and quantifying in vitro remineralization with early caries lesions.Material and methods: Sixty human teeth were randomly assigned into four equal groups. Groups 1 and 2 were prophylactically cleaned; groups 3 and 4 were not. Group 1 received treatment with MI Varnish® and Recaldent™ for 30 days. Group 2 was treated similarly, but without MI Varnish®. Group 3 was treated as 1 and Group 4 as 2. Mineral composition was obtained using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis SoproLife® camera images on the occlusal surfaces were analysed for grey value distribution and difference in mean intensity values (DI). Paired t-test and Mann-Whitney-U test were used for intragroup comparison between baseline and T1. Kruskal-Wallis followed by Mann-Whitney-U tests were used for inter-group comparisons at T1.Results: All groups exhibited a significant increase in calcium content and calcium-to-phosphorus ratio (P < 0.05), except Group 4 (Group 1 showed the greatest increase, then Groups 3 and 2). Grey intensity values decreased in all groups (P < 0.05). Group 1 showed the greatest change in DI (16.82 [SD 12.07]), followed by Group 3 (12.46 [SD 9.41]), 2 (10.45 [SD 7.76]), and 4 (6.46 [SD 6.21]). The difference in DI was different between the compared groups (P = 0.038); Groups 1 and 3 exhibited a greater DI compared with 4 (P < 0.01).Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, SoproLife® is effective for early detection and for longitudinally monitoring the remineralization after Recaldent™ therapy.

Objective: to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of general dental practitioners GDPs) on the Emergency management of avulsed teeth. The management of the avulsed teeth is well outlined in The latest trauma guideline. However, little information is available about the level of knowledge of The management of avulsed teeth among young dentists in Turkey. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire was completed to assess the knowledge of GDPs on the emergency manage-ment of avulsed teeth. The questionnaire asked questions to 142 dental practitioners about wheth-er they have received information about the emergency management of dental trauma, whether they have intervened in cases of avulsed teeth following a dental trauma, and, finally, whether they have Given treatment of avulsed teeth. Results: The majority of GDPs had received training to treat avulsed teeth. he findings of the study showed that only 35% of GDPs recalled the critical time for treatment. The number of GDPs who had incorrect knowledge on this topic was higher and statistically signifi-cant (p < 0.001). The rates of the correct answers according to the relevant information fields were as follows: optimal storage medium (78%), type of splint (56%), splinting period (58.5%), and systemic medication after avulsion (32%).Conclusion: The results show that many GDPs had limited experi-ence in treating avulsed teeth. However, in the study, it was stressed that the knowledge of GDPs re-lated to the factors affecting the successful treatment of avulsion cases should be improved by using continuing education programs.

Objectives Dental profession is characterized by a high risk of injuries at work due to exposure to specific working conditions. The operating area in a patient's mouth is small, and it is handled by a large number of sharp instruments and drills that rotate at high speed, which creates an aerosol contaminated with particles of saliva and blood. This poses a risk of transmitting infections from patients to the dentist through stabbing incidents and cuts, which are some of the most common occupational injuries that are reported in the scientific literature. Objective The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of occupational injuries among dentists in Croatia, to establish most common injuries, and to determine the main risk factors. The aim of this research was also to determine the dentists' opinion on causes that are responsible for the occupational diseases and injuries. Materials and methods The survey was conducted based on a sample of 406 dentists from Croatia as respondents to an electronic survey. Results 63.05% of the respondents suffered injuries caused by dental practitioners. The most common injuries were needle puncture incidents (57.75%) and cuts (20.86%), followed by eye injuries (13.37%), patient bite (4.81%) and punches (1.60%). The largest number of respondents stated the improper posture as the most important cause of occupational diseases and injuries, followed by stress, infection and noise. Conclusion Knowledge of risk factors is the first step of injury prevention. Our respondents were largely aware of the dangers surrounding them. Nevertheless, the frequency of injuries was high and there is still a need for preventive measures to minimize the frequency of injuries in dentistry.

Objectives This study was to investigate suitable surface treatment methods for porous titanium by ex vivo study of material properties and calcium phosphate deposition in simulated body fluid. Material and Methods Porous titanium with acid (H2SO4 and HCl mixed acid) or alkali (NaOH) treatment was prepared. The surfaces were observed, and the weight change ratio (after and before surface treatment) and compression strength were measured. To investigate the apatite formation ability, each sample was immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF). Surface observations were performed, and the weight change ratio (before/after immersing SBF) and calcification (by alizarin red staining) were measured. Results The acid group showed a martensitic micro-scale rough structure and the weight and mechanical strength greatly decreased compared to the other groups. The alkali group exhibited a nano-scale roughness structure with similar weight and mechanical strength. Following immersion in SBF, an apatite-like crystal layer in the alkali group was observed. The weight of all samples increased. The change in weight of the samples in the alkali, acid, and control groups were significantly different, showing the following trend: alkali group (1.6%) > acid group (1.2%) > control group (0.8%). Calcium precipitation values were higher in the samples from alkali group than in those from the acid and control groups. Conclusions Alkali treatment was found to be a suitable surface modification method for porous titanium, resulting in good mechanical strength and apatite formation ability in simulated body fluid.

Objectives To compare selected anatomical and treatment-related diagnostic parameters estimated by cone-beam computed tomography and by digital periapical radiography in teeth with apical periodontitis, and to evaluate reliability of different examiners in interpretation of images obtained by both methods. Material and Methods Teeth with apical periodontitis were evaluated independently by 2 endodontists and 1 radiologist based on 128 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and 162 digital periapical radiography (DPR) images. Anatomical (size, relation with root, location of periapical radiolucency) and treatment-related (canal obturation length, homogeneity, coronal seal) parameters were assessed. Fleiss kappa reflected inter-observer agreement while intra-examiner agreement was estimated by Cohen’s kappa. McNemar and McNemar-Bowker tests served for evaluation of differences between CBCT- and DPR-based estimates. Results Cohen’s kappa ranged from 0.62 to 1 for all examiners. Fleiss kappa values were nearly perfect for majority of parameters. Diagnostic discrepancy between methods was found for size of radiolucency that in 15 - 17% cases was larger, and in 25 - 28% smaller in DPR than in CBCT images. DPR revealed 20% of root canals scored as non-obturated while in CBCT - obturation present. Canal obturation was rated as homogenous by CBCT, while absent or non-homogenous by DPR, in 17 - 23%, and 11 - 14% of cases, respectively. Radiologist detected more root perforations in CBCT than in DPR images. Conclusions Good intra- and inter-examiner agreement for anatomical and treatment-related diagnostic parameters was achieved using cone-beam computed tomography and digital periapical radiography methods and demonstrated similar diagnostic capability, although variation regarding root perforations and canal obturation quality was observed.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of short-term storage in two different temperatures on stability of salivary total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidant stress index (OSI). Material and methods: Saliva samples were collected from twenty healthy volunteers for the study. An aliquot was selected for immediate analysis and the rest was stored at -20°C and -80°C for a period of 120 days, and analyzes were performed at 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 days. The determination of the TOS and the TAC were performed by colorimetric methods. Results: The results show that the two storage temperatures were able to preserve oxidants and antioxidants up to 60 days with similar levels when compared with fresh samples. When comparing the different storage temperatures at each time point, no significant differences were observed. Finally, the OSI remains constant over time of storage at both temperatures without statistically significant differences between them. The results were expressed as mean ± standard error of mean. Aim The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the gender-based differences in patients with hypodontia. As a secondary outcome, the study looked into the correlation between hypodontia and other dental clinical features among Kosovar adolescents. Material and methods 3,306 students, aged between 15-21 years were examined in schools in Kosovo. Examinations were performed using a dental mirror to assess the number of teeth present, and dental impressions were taken from hypodontia subjects. Panoramic and periapical radiographs, as well as intraoral photographs, were taken in subjects who were suspected to have hypodontia to verify the diagnosis. Results 77 of the examined subjects had hypodontia, among which 46 were females (59.7%) and 31 were males (40.3%). The most frequently missing teeth were the maxillary lateral incisors, followed by the mandibular second premolars. 68 patients (88.3%) had at least one dental clinical feature concurrent with hypodontia. Conclusion No significant difference was noted in the prevalence of hypodontia according to gender. Teeth rotation was the most commonly observed clinical feature followed by inclination.

Introduction The workplace can be a source of stress. One of the most stressful professions is the profession of doctor of dental medicine (dentist). Multiple forms of stressors lead to such occupational stress. Objective The research objective was to examine stress levels among dentists in the 25 to 45 year age group. Materials and methods This cross sectional study included 105 doctors of dental medicine throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, aged between 25 and 45 years. The research was conducted by means of a confidential on-line survey. All participants signed the informed consent, and voluntarily filled out the survey form. The research used the PERCEIVED STRESS SCALE-PSS 10. The statistical analysis used the IBM Statistics SPSS v.21 statistics packages and Microsoft Excel 2010. Descriptive statistics, X2 test, and T-test were also used. Results Of the total number of respondents, n=105, 66 (63%) of them were female and 39 (37%) male respondents. The mean median value of the score was 23 (Mean = 23.080), as a result of which we can conclude that the respondents in the 25-45 year age population group that participated in this study showed a high level of stress based on the completed questionnaire and the answers received from the respondents. Conclusion The estimated level of stress has been shown to be high in both genders, with no statistically significant difference between genders.

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the sociodemographic and clinical parameters of patients who visit the emergency dental service and their most common diagnoses. Materials and Methods: The data were collected on the basis of a survey filled out by patients. A total of 1730 out of 6732 patients (26%) were surveyed using a questionnaire to analyze sociodemographic status, dental visits, the description and dynamics of the symptoms. After the data collection, methods of descriptive data presentation and of inferential statistics were made in SPSS. Results: Survey results show that most subjects (60.4%) came during the weekends and holidays. The subjects, 73.1 % of them, stated that they had already used this type of service, and 65.8% did not visit their dentist beforehand. The largest number of subjects (62.2%) reported that they needed emergency service within a week after their problems had begun. The most common diagnoses included face and jaw abscesses (27.3%). There is a statistically significant difference between the number of patients who went to the emergency dental service and completed the questionnaire over the course of several months contrary to patients who were there in May and June (59.7%) compared to July and August (40.3 %). Conclusions: Most subjects had clear indications for being referred to an emergency dental service. Most of the emergency conditions were mainly due to irregular visits to the dentist. Patient education and preventive programs would probably have reduced the number of visits.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of the extent of color-vision deficiency on visual shade-matching ability. Materials and methods: Six groups were investigated: the control group (N = 68), the protan medium deficiency (PMED) group (N = 5), the protan strong deficiency (PSTD) group (N = 5), the deutan mild deficiency (DMID) group (N = 5), the deutan medium deficiency (DMED) group (N = 5) and the deutan strong deficiency (DSTD) group (N = 8). The color vision of the participants was evaluated monocularly using the Hardy-Rand-Rittler (HRR) test and on an HMC Anomaloskop MR (Rayleigh test). The final exam on a Toothguide Training Box consisted of 15 lightness–chroma–hue tasks. The color difference (ΔE* ab) and the shade-matching score (ΣΔE* ab) were computed. The means and the standard deviations for the ΣΔE* ab were calculated. An independent t-test was used for statistical analyses of the data and a comparison of means (α = .05) for protan groups and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a post-hoc Bonferroni test (α = .05) for deutan groups. Results: The PSTD group had a mean ΣΔE* ab of 63.38 ± 9.52, which means their elections were significantly worse in comparison to the PMED group (ΣΔE* ab = 47.62 ± 9.88, p = 0.033). The selections of the control group were significantly better in comparison to all groups with color-vision deficiency (control – PMED, p = 0.031; control – PSTD, p < 0.0001; control – DMED, p < 0.0001; control – DSTD, p < 0.0001), except in comparison with DMID group (p = 0.082). The comparisons between deutan groups were not significantly different (DMID – DMED, p = 0.352; DMID – DSTD, p = 0.323; DMED – DSTD, p = 1.000). Conclusion: Participants with strong protan color-vision deficiency are worse at shade matching than participants with medium protan color-vision deficiency.

Introduction: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic immune, inflammatory disease of the oral cavity of a still unknown etiology. Materials and methods: The study involved 63 subjects diagnosed with oral lichen planus and 63 subjects without pathologic changes in the oral mucosa who were classified as controls. All subjects were given a detailed medical history at first screening. The medical history of the presence of other autoimmune disease in all subjects was supported by medical records. A sample of venous blood was taken from each subject in order to determine sedimentation rate (SE) and leukocyte count (L) using standard laboratory procedures, and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration values were determined as well. Background Forensic estimation of chronological age has played an increasingly important role as part of cadaver identification, and also in living individuals due to the phenomenon of immigration and sexual abuse of undocumented trafficked children. Objective This research aimed to validate the already used dental mineralization and eruption atlas in normal children and adolescent population in estimating chronological age in a young population, particularly those with special needs, majority of them with systemic diseases. Participants and setting A sample of 163 orthopantomograms from two independent medical institutions was collected from 133 patients aged between 4 and 23 years. Method The orthopantomograms were divided into two groups, 95 from patients with systemic pathologies that have repercussions on dental development and 68 with systemic pathologies without dental repercussions. Dental ages were estimated by the London Atlas using the left side and then independently the right side of the maxilla. The intraobserver and interobserver agreements were evaluated. The difference between dental age estimates and the chronological age and its absolute value were calculated and analyzed. Results Statistically significant differences were found between estimates and chronological age, revealing a general prevalence for underestimation; except for those under the age of 12. Nevertheless, the underestimation in individuals under the age of 16 was not significant (with an average of less than one month), while the underestimation was significant for persons who were at least 16 years old (with an average over 26 months). Furthermore, for those persons with systemic diseases with dental repercussions a greater error in underestimation was obtained, which indicates that the midpoint values should be reassessed in persons with Down's syndrome, chromosomal alterations, syndromes and central nervous system disorders. Conclusions This atlas can be potentially used as a tool for age estimation in a population with special needs and, also, in a population with systemic diseases, but we suggest further studies with larger international samples to create adequate atlases for all the required scenarios, mainly, diagrams for people with systemic diseases who are over the age of 16.

Objective The objective of the study was to assess the quality of root canal fillings of cases referred to endodontic surgery using preoperative radiographs and correlate it with endodontic surgery treatment decision. The objective was also to analyse clinical symptoms and size of periapical lesions on radiographs and correlate them with treatment decisions including non-surgical retreatment, endodontic surgery and extraction. Materials and methods A questionnaire was composed to record the data. Eighty-six patients with 109 teeth, who were referred to endodontic surgery, participated in the research. The quality of root canal filling was assessed according to its homogeneity and filling length on digital radiographs. The data were analyzed using χ2-test and t-test. Results Of the teeth referred to endodontic surgery, 97.2% were treated by a general practice dentist, endodontic retreatment was attempted in 20.6%, and root canal filling was homogeneous and within 1 mm from the apex in 21.6%. Endodontic surgery, retreatment, extraction and no treatment were selected in 90.1%, 5.4%, 1.8% and 2.7% of the cases, respectively. Conclusions Low percentage of adequate root canal fillings and high percentage of endodontic surgery decisions suggest that there is a need to increase awareness of non-surgical retreatment options.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare compressive strengths of two glass ionomerbased materials, with and without a light-cured, nano-filled coating, after cyclic loading and thermocycling. Materials and methods: To determine compressive strength of new restorative materials over a longer period of time, materials were analysed under simulated conditions where cyclic loading replicated masticatory loading and thermocycling simulated thermal oscillations in the oral cavity. Four groups of samples (n=7)—(1) Equia Fil (GC, Tokyo, Japan) uncoated; (2) Equia Fil coated with Equia Coat (GC, Tokyo, Japan); (3) Equia Forte Fil (GC, Tokyo, Japan) uncoated; and (4) Equia Forte Fil coated with Equia Forte coat (GC, Tokyo, Japan)—were subjected to cyclic loading (240,000 cycles) using a chewing simulator (MOD, Esetron Smart Robotechnologies, Ankara, Turkey). Results: Compressive strength measurements were performed according to ISO 9917-1:2007, using the universal mechanical testing machine (Instron, Lloyd, UK). Purpose To quantify the influence of three different finishing treatments on the cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloy surface based on stereometric analysis parameters. Materials and methods Eighteen specimens were casted from an extra-hard alloy (Wironit®, BEGO, Bremen, Germany). The samples were distributed into three groups (n = 6 samples per group) dependent on different polishing techniques applied, as follows: A group, only electropolished (EP) samples; B group, after EP, an additional mechanical polishing process was applied to the surface by rubber discs and a polishing paste (RP); C group, after EP, an additional mechanical polishing process was completed by rubber discs, polishing paste and finally by a rotating deer leather wheel (RPDL). Samples were imaged by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in a contact mode, in air, at room temperature. Results The evaluation of the microtexture of the sample surface was made based on the 3-D roughness parameters. The lowest statistical surface roughness parameters were found in the RP samples, whereas the highest values were obtained from the EP samples. Conclusions The experiments described can help manufacturers identify the most appropriate parameters and their ranges within which optimal surface characteristics can be achieved.

Objectives This randomized controlled in vitro 4-arm trial study aimed to study the remineralization potential of Recaldent™ and assess the effects of prophylaxis cleaning and MI Varnish® on enhancing this remineralization potential. Material and Methods Sixty human teeth were randomly assigned into equal samples (A/B). Sample A was prophylactically cleaned, randomly divided into equal samples (1/2). Sample A1 received treatment with MI Varnish® and Recaldent™ for 30 days. Sample A2 was treated similarly but without MI Varnish®. Sample B did not receive prophylaxis cleaning and was divided into equal samples (1/2). Sample B1 was treated as A1 and sample B2 as A2. The teeth were examined for mineral composition at baseline, after the interventions (T1), and after prophylaxis cleaning (T2). Study outcomes were mineral content (% weight of carbon [C], phosphorus [P], calcium [Ca], oxygen [O], chlorine [Cl], sodium [Na] and silicon [Si]) and calcium-phosphorus ratio (Ca/P). Results All groups had similar mineral composition at baseline. At T1, sample B2 exhibited least P, Ca and Ca/P content. Samples A1 and B1 showed higher content of P and Ca, compared to B2 (A1 only exhibited higher Ca/P). Sample A2 exhibited lowest Cl and Na content. At T2, sample A1 exhibited lowest C, P, O and Si content (highest Ca/P). Sample A2 showed least Ca/P, and highest Na content. Conclusions Teeth treated by Recaldent™ proceeded by prophylaxis cleaning or MI Varnish® showed remineralization, especially when receiving both interventions. This superior effect persisted even after a second cleaning. Further trials are necessary to provide conclusive evidence in humans.

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate cytotoxic potencies of two light cured composite materials after heating on different temperatures and cured directly and through CAD/CAM overlay. Materials and methods Composite materials (microfilled-hybrid Gradia Direct Posterior and Beautifil II) were heated in a Calset warming unit at three different temperatures (T1:37°C, T2:54°C, T3:68°C). A small amount of heated composite material was placed in a round mold (diameter 6mm; 0.65mm thick), covered with Mylar sheet, pressed and polymerized with Bluephase LED unit. One group of samples were polymerized directly, and the other group through 2mm thick CAD/CAM ceramic-reinforced polymer (CRP) and CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC) overlay for 20 and 40 seconds. The polymerized samples were placed immediately after curing in a lymphocyte cell culture. The viability of peripheral blood lymphocytes was evaluated using a dye exclusion technique by simultaneous staining with ethidium bromide and acridine orange. Quantitative assessments were made by determination of the percentage of viable, apoptotic and necrotic cells. The Pearson chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. Results In case of 20 seconds polymerization, the highest number of viable cells polymerization were recorded when materials were heated at 37°C (T1), while in case of 40 seconds polymerization, the highest number of viable cells were recorded when the materials were heated at 54°C (T2). The samples polymerized through CAD/CAM overlays showed less cytotoxicity than samples polymerized directly. Conclusion Apart from composite material composition, the cell viability was also influenced by curing time, temperature of pre-heating and polymerization pattern.

Objective: This in vitro study compares the fluoride release from microlaminated glass ionomer based on glass hybrid technology coated with two different surface coating agents. Materials and Methods: A total of 18 samples were divided into three groups of six samples each: (1) glass ionomer Equia Forte Fil coated with Equia Forte Coat (Equia+EC), (2) glass ionomer Equia Forte Fil coated with GC Fuji Varnish (Equia+VC) and (3) uncoated glass ionomer Equia Forte (EQUIA cont). Aim: The aim of this study was to assess dental students’ perception of different learning environment in India, Nepal and Croatia. Methods: The study was conducted during a period of academic year 2016/17. A total of 849 dental students participated in the study. There were 188 respondents from Croatia, 373 from India, and 288 from Nepal. Non-responders were not followed up. The Dental Student Learning Environment Survey (DSLES) was used which consisted of 55 items subdivided into seven scales. The scales measured the following perceptions: Flexibility, ‘Student-to-Student Interactions, Emotional Climate, Supportiveness, Meaningful Experience, Organization and Breadth of Interest. Statistical analysis of the data utilised the Kolmogorov Smirnov test. The Kruskal-Wallis “non-parametric ANOVA” was also used to test the differences between the countries. A post hoc analysis was performed using Ranks tables and the Median test. Results: The response rate was 26.9%. Objective: The objective of the study was to establish whether there is a difference in the presence of potentially pathogenic anaerobic microorganisms around the implant and the homologous tooth in implant-prosthetic patients who received individual information about maintaining their oral hygiene. Material and methods: The study included 30 subjects with dental implants and metal-ceramic crowns. A periodontal probe was used to record the approximal plaque index (API), the papilla bleeding index (PBI), the periodontal pocket probing depth (PD) and the gingival recession. The fluid around the implant and the gingival sulcus fluid around the homologous tooth on the opposite lateral side were sampled. Results: The results have shown a positive API and PBI on 30% of the implants and a negative one on 70% of the implants. The average mucosal retraction measured around the implants was 0.15 mm, and the average probing depth was 2.25 mm. The API and PBI were positive on 78.3% of the homologous teeth. The average gingival retraction measured was 1.06 mm, and the average probing depth was 1.85 mm. Anaerobic bacteria were found in 12 out of 30 subjects (40%). Anaerobic bacteria were isolated only on the implant in 7 subjects, only on the homologous tooth in 3 subjects and both on the implant and the homologous tooth in 2 subjects. Conclusions: Anaerobic bacteria were more abundantly present on implants than on homologous teeth.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine whether the linear measures of the maxilla, mandible and cranial base were predictors of facial growth rotation in a Croatian population with Class III malocclusion by cephalometric radiographic methods. Material and methods: The examined sample consisted of pretreatment lateral cephalometric records of 201 (111 females and 90 males) untreated Class III patients of Caucasian Croatian ancestry from the Department of Orthodontics at Zagreb University. The measurements were divided into five categories for analysis: cranial base, skeletal maxillary and skeletal mandibular relationships, sagittal intermaxillary and vertical relationships. Five multiple linear regression models were used to identify predictors of facial rotation pattern. Results: The effective length of the mandible was the most important predictor of facial rotation pattern, with the increased length largerly predisposing the tendency to the vertical growth pattern. No significant dichotomy was found regarding gender apart from the fourth model in which the posterior rotation of maxilla is related to female gender. Ispitanici i metode: Ispitivani uzorak sastojao se od 201 laterolateralne snimke glave (111 ženskih, 90 muških) učinjene prije početka ortodontske terapije, a dobivene su iz baze podataka pacijenata Zavoda za ortodonciju Stomatološke klinike Kliničkoga bolničkog centra Zagreb. Sva mjerenja klasificirana su u pet kategorija: kranijalna baza, skeletni maksilarni i skeletni mandibularni odnosi, međučeljusni sagitalni i vertikalni odnosi. Za procjenu rotacijskog obrasca rasta lica korišteno je pet modela multiple linearne regresije. Rezultati: Efektivna dužina mandibule bila je najznačajniji prediktor rotacijskog obrasca rasta lica pri čemu je povećana dužina u velikoj mjeri predisponirala tendenciju vertikalnom obrascu rasta. Nije pronađena značajna spolna dihotomija, osim u četvrtom modelu gdje je posteriorna rotacija maksile povezana sa ženskim spolom. Zaključci: Prediktori rotacijskog obrasca rasta lica pronađeni u ovoj studiji mogli bi pomoći ortodontima u odluci o vremenu i vrsti terapiji pacijenata hrvatske populacije s anomalijom skeletne klase III.

Objectives To investigate the quality of communication between dentists and dental laboratory technicians in private dental laboratories in Khartoum State related to fabrication of removable partial dentures. Methods This was a descriptive cross-sectional study, in which dental technicians were interviewed regarding the quality of instructions they received from dentists concerning the construction of removable partial dentures (RPD). Eighty cases were investigated, 69 acrylic (A-RPD) and 11 cobalt chromium (CC-RPD) dentures. Results Although dentists provided no instructions in 21.7% of A-RPD cases, they gave instructions in all CC-RPD cases. Instructions were primarily given verbally (55.1% in A-RPD, 54.5% in CC-RPD cases), as opposed to written (23.3% in A-RPD, 45.5% in CC-RPD cases). Most design components for A-RPD and CC-RPD cases were not clearly prescribed, and instructions were clear in only 8.7% of A-RPD and 36.4% of CC-RPD cases. Notably, surveying of casts by dentists was only done in 18.2% of CC-RPD cases. Most technicians (84.2%) believed that prosthesis design was the dentists' responsibility. Technicians needed to contact dentists for clarification of design significantly more frequently for CC-RPD (p=0.004) cases. Conclusion Quality of communication between dentists and private laboratory technicians in Khartoum State with regard to removable partial denture construction was largely inadequate.

Uvod: U Bosni i Hercegovini (BiH), uz stalno stanovništvo, živi i određen broj raseljenih osoba. Najviše ih je na području Tuzlanskog kantona. Oni se ubrajaju u rizičnu skupinu kad je riječ o bolestima općenito, pa i o orofacijalnima. Dentalni strah i anksioznost (DSA) pojavljuje se nužno i kod raseljenih osoba i velik je u odnosu na opću populaciju. Na osnovi navedenoga željeli smo evaluirati prisutnost DSA-e i čimbenika za njezin nastanak kod raseljenog stanovništva u Bosni i Hercegovini. Ispitanici i metode: U studiji je sudjelovalo 310 osoba u dobi od 35 do 44 godine, a bile su podijeljene u ispitivanu skupinu raseljenih osoba (n = 153) i kontrolnu skupinu domicilnog stanovništva (n = 157) iz gradova Tuzlanskog kantona. Kod ispitanika se procjenjivala prisutnost DSA-e s pomoću prilagođene Korahove ljestvice dentalne anksioznosti te prisutnost čimbenika za njezin nastanak. Rezultati: U uzorku je ustanovljena općenito visoka prevalencija DSA-e (38,71 %), a posebno u skupini raseljenih osoba (57,52 %). Pritom raseljeni u uzorku rjeđe posjećuju stomatologa, uglavnom samo kada je to potrebno (najčešće zbog odontalgije) i snažnije reagiraju na stresore koji mogu uzrokovati DSA-e. Zaključak: Raseljene osobe ubrajaju se u rizičnu skupinu s visokom prevalencijom DSA-e. To je mogući razlog da ova populacijska skupina ima prosječno lošije parametre oralnoga zdravlja te lošije uzorke ponašanja sa stajališta učestalosti posjeta i razloga za posjete stomatologu. Sve to pojačava začarani krug u kojemu loše oralno zdravlje pospješuje pojavu DSA-e i obrnuto., Introduction: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, apart from domicile population, there is a certain number of displaced persons. Most of them are situated in the area of Canton Tuzla. These persons are generally at risk of and being watched for various diseases, including the disease of the orofacial area. Dental fear and anxiety (DFA) is also inevitably present in displaced persons, with higher prevalence compared with general population. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the DFA presence and the most common reasons for dental fear and anxiety in displaced persons in our country. Patients and methods: 310 interviewed persons were included in this study, aged 35 to 44 years, from several cities of Canton Tuzla. They were divided in the group of displaced persons (n=153), and the group of domicile inhabitants (n=157). The study participants were interviewed about the DFA presence, as well as about the risk factors for DFA, which was subsequently evaluated by the Modified Corah’s Dental Anxiety Scale. Results: A high prevalence of DFA presence was determined in the total sample (38.71%), and particularly in the displaced persons group (57.52%). The results showed that displaced persons rarely visited dentists, mainly when it was necessary (odontalgia), with stronger reactions to factors that could cause DFA appearance. Conclusion: Displaced persons are regarded as one of the highest risk groups for prevalence of DFA. This could be mainly due to poor oral health status, rare dental office visits and the urgent need for dental treatment, which could lead to vicious circle of mutual strengthening between bad oral health and DFA appearance.

BPA has been reported to leach from some resin based dental restorative materials and materials used for orthodontic treatment. To confirm and update previous findings, especially in light of the new temporary lower threshold value for tolerable daily BPA intake, we have investigated the leaching of BPA from 4 composite filling materials, 3 sealants and 2 orthodontic bonding materials. The materials were either uncured and dissolved in methanol or cured. The cured materials were kept in deionized water for 24 hours or 2 weeks. Samples were subsequently analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS-MS). The composite filling material Tetric EvoFlow® and the fissure sealant DELTON® showed significantly higher levels of BPA leaching compared to control samples for all test conditions (uncured, 24 h leaching and 2 weeks leaching). There were no significant differences in amount of leached BPA for any of the tested materials after 24 hours compared to 2 weeks. These results show that BPA is still released from some dental materials despite the general concern about potential adverse effects of BPA. However, the amounts of BPA were relatively low and most likely represent a very small contribution to the total BPA exposure.

Aim This study aimed at evaluating the perceived stress and its sources among undergraduate dental students at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, the data were collected using the DES questionnaire. The overall score of stress and scores by individual domains were described and analyzed by different grouping factors: gender, study level, marital status and GPA. Results A total of 366 dental students agreed to take a part in this study. Up to 57% of the participants were females. The overall DES score was 1.67 ± 0.45. Female students and married students scored higher stress levels than their counterparts. Stress increased significantly among students as their educational level increased. Inversely, the stress levels were lower in participants with high GPA. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that "Study level" and "Gender" were significant independent determinants of overall DES and, also, most of the stress domains. Forty one percent of the variability in DES score can be explained by these determinants. Conclusion DES among dental students in Jazan University is moderate and slightly higher. It is higher among females and increases significantly with study progression. However, students who had higher GPA showed lower levels of stress. Clinical significance Reduction and/or relief of stress among dental students will reflect positively on persistence and academic achievement, which will lead to better management and care of patients.

Background Molar-incisor-hypomineralisation (MIH) is a disturbance in dental development that commonly involves first permanent molars but permanent incisors may also be compromised. The prevalence of MIH in the literature varies between 2.5% and 40% of the world child population. Little information is gained on the prevalence of MIH among children in Spain. Aim The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of MIH among school children from Barcelona, Spain. Material and methods A cross-sectional study which included 705 children, aged 6 -14 years and 11 months was carried out. Full mouth examinations were performed using the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) criteria for the diagnosis of MIH. Results A total of 56 cases of MIH were found, 22 (39.3%) boys and 34 (60.7%) girls. The prevalence was 7.94% (6.39% for boys and 9.41% for girls). MIH lesions were seen more often in girls than boys (χ2 = 4.9, p= 0.023) the male/female ratio being 1:1.54. Upper teeth were more prevalent than lower teeth in both genders with an upper/lower ratio of 1.86/1 for boys and 1.68/1 for girls. Conclusion Considered either by gender or by teeth, upper teeth and girls were ahead in our sample.

Objectives: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the prevalence of hypodontia in a sample of dental patients, aged between seven and eleven years at University Alfonso X in Madrid (Spain). Materials and Methods: The number of hypodontia cases and the most affected teeth were evaluated in 2500 panoramic radiographs in a random sample of dental patients consisting of 1235 females and 1265 males. We divided them according to age, number of hypodontia resent in each patient (multiple or single), each side, each quadrant either in the upper jaw or in the mandible. The chi-square test (P 0.05). Conclusion: The percentage of total agenesis of 2500 patients studied was 3.48%.

Introduction: Calcium hydroxide is widely used in the field of endodontics as a temporary root canal filling. This medicament significantly increases pH and optimizes the treatment outcome. Its total removal before final obturation is very important. Otherwise it could affect the hermetic filling and respectively the endodontic success. Aim: To evaluate the most effective irrigation protocol of calcium hydroxide removal from root canals. Materials and methods: In this study 36 single root canal teeth were observed. They were randomly divided into three groups (n=10 each group) according to the technique applied for calcium hydroxide removal - manual irrigation, irrigation and Revo-S rotary instrumentation; and passive ultrasonic irrigation, and a control group (n=6) – irrigation with distilled water only. After calcium hydroxide removals following the procedures above, teeth were separated longitudinally in a buccal-lingual direction and remnants of medicaments were observed in the apical, middle and coronal part of each tooth. Then all of the specimens were observed using scanning electron microscopy and evaluated by a specified scale. The results have undergone statistical analysis. Results: In the case of calcium hydroxide in the apex and in the middle with highest average is Revo-S, followed by Ultrasonic and irrigation. In the coronal part the highest average belongs to Revo-S, irrigation and Ultrasonic. In all groups the highest average is represented by control group. Conclusion: There is not a universal technique for removal of intracanal medicaments and applying more than one protocol is required.

The acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) is an organic film, bacteria-free, formed in vivo as a result of the selective adsorption of salivary proteins and glycoproteins to the solid surfaces exposed to the oral environment. Objective: This study aimed to compare the proteomic profile of AEP formed in situ on human and bovine enamel using a new intraoral device (Bauru in situ pellicle model - BISPM). Material and Methods: One hundred and eight samples of human and bovine enamel were prepared (4×4 mm). Nine subjects with good oral conditions wore a removable jaw appliance (BISPM) with 6 slabs of each substrate randomly allocated. The AEP was formed during the morning, for 120 minutes, and collected with an electrode filter paper soaked in 3% citric acid. This procedure was conducted in triplicate and the pellicle collected was processed for analysis by LC-ESI-MS/MS. The obtained mass spectrometry MS/MS spectra were searched against human protein database (SWISS-PROT). Results: The use of BISPM allowed the collection of enough proteins amount for proper analysis. A total of 51 proteins were found in the AEP collected from the substrates. Among them, 15 were common to both groups, 14 were exclusive of the bovine enamel, and 22 were exclusive of the human enamel. Proteins typically found in the AEP were identified, such as Histatin-1, Ig alpha-1, Ig alpha 2, Lysozyme C, Statherin and Submaxillary gland androgen-regulated protein 3B. Proteins not previously described in the AEP, such as metabolism, cell signaling, cell adhesion, cell division, transport, protein synthesis and degradation were also identified. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that the proteins typically found in the AEP appeared in both groups, regardless the substrate. The BISPM revealed to be a good device to be used in studies involving proteomic analysis of the AEP.

Objectives It is known from the existing literature that metal ions within orthodontic appliances are prone to corrosion due to the salivary and bacterial interplay in the oral cavity. The results from the most studies show that levels of salivary nickel and chromium do not increase after the installment of orthodontic appliances. Material and methods However, there are no studies on salivary levels of titanium, cobalt, copper and zinc in these patients. Salivary levels of nickel (Ni), titanium (Ti), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) were measured in 42 patients with ceramic brackets and in 42 patients with metal conventional brackets prior to insertion of orthodontic appliances and six months after insertion of orthodontic appliances by means of inductive coupled plasma/mass spectrometry. Statistical analysis was performed by use of Wilcoxon signed rank test and Mann Whitney test with level of significance set at 0.05. Results The results showed that salivary level of titanium increased significantly six months after installment of orthodontic appliances. Salivary level of chromium and zinc significantly decreased after installment of orthodontic appliances. There were no significant differences in salivary levels of nickel, titanium, chromium, copper, cobalt and zinc between the patients with metallic and those with ceramic brackets. Conclusion We might conclude that the salivary level of titanium increased significantly six months after installment of orthodontic appliances unlike salivary levels of chromium and zinc which significantly decreased after installment of orthodontic appliances, regardless of bracket type which was used.

Objective: To examine the potential association between patients’ characteristics that experienced implant failure and those who had successful implant treatment. Materials and methods: This retrospective case-control study is based on 186 dental records of implant failure and 186 age and gender matched successful treatments for a total of 372 patients. Age at the time of the procedure, gender, medical history, tobacco use, dental insurance status, ZIP code and type of treatment provided (implant failure/successful implant treatment) were recorded. Results: The population consisted of 47.6% females, 48.9% individuals with dental insurance and 9.7% self-reported tobacco users. A statistically significant association (p≤0.05) was found between implant failure and successful implant treatment in regards to tobacco use, socio-economic status and medical history. Insurance status and implant location (region, arch) did not affect significantly (p>0.05) the outcome of implant therapy. Conclusions: Within the limitation of this retrospective case-control study, individuals with high socio-economic status, no history of tobacco use and history of heart attack were more likely to have a successful implant treatment than those with a low socio-economic status, tobacco users and without history of heart attack.
