Background and Aim: The development of dental treatments and the long-term maintenance of teeth increased the incidence of complications such as root fractures. Failure to detect root fractures may lead to progressive bone loss and unnecessary treatments. Therefore, an early diagnosis of this complication is important for both the patient and dentist. The role of radiographic examinations in the detection of such lesions is remarkable. The current study aimed at determining the diagnostic accuracy of digital radiography images printed on paper in vertical root fractures and comparing its efficacy with indirect digital radiography. Materials and Methods: The current in vitro study was conducted on 40 extracted human premolars that were fixed by using wax in the sheep mandibular bone. Imaging of the mounted teeth was performed horizontally at 0° and 15° using and X-ray machine (XGenus, De Götzen SRL, Varese, Italy) on the photostimulable storage phosphor (PSP) image plate. Then the teeth were extracted the teeth were extracted from the bony socket of the mandible. After creating a vertical root fracture and fastening the two-piece, the teeth were again fixed with wax in the mandible and indirect digital images were taken under the conditions similar to those of the initial ones All images were processed by Digora Optime (Soredex, Orion Corporation, Helsinki, Finland) and then transferred to Scanora 5.0 (Soredex Corp, Helsinki, Finland). The images were inverted into the desire sized using Scanora, and then all were printed on a silk paper (Fujifilm, São Paulo, Brazil) using a hp color laserjet 1600 printer, 2400 dpi. The images displayed on monitors and printed on papers were separately assessed by two radiologists and the data were analyzed by statistical tests, proportions, and Cochran formula. The agreement between the observers was determined by Kappa index (α=0.05). Results: The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of vertical root fracture detection in images printed on paper were not significantly different from those of indirect digital radiographic images (P>0.05). Conclusion: There were no significant differences between the diagnostic accuracy of indirect digital images (PSP) displayed on monitors and paper printed images in the detection of vertical root fractures. Therefore, in order to detect the vertical root fractures, use of paper printed images can be considered as a complementary method, but not a specific diagnostic method.

Statement of Problem: The destruction of gingival tissue in the interradicular region of multi rooted teeth is called furcation involvement. The correct diagnosis of furcation lesions are the basis of a successful treatment. Purpose: compare the quality of printed images on desirable papers and indirect digital radiography (PSP) in diagnosis of furcation involvements. Materials and Method: Grade I and grade II furcation involvement were artificially created on 41 mandibular first and second molars and PSP radiography was prepared before and after induction of furcation involvement. Radiographs were printed on radiographic plates using Prima laser printer (Fuji, Japan) and on A4-sized papers (silk) using HP color laserjet 1600 printer. Two observers examined the radiographs and their observations were given to the statistics consultant for data analysis. Results: Positive and negative predictive value (PPV and NPV) of grade I, II (together) furcation involvement for PSP was measured as 96.1% and 84.4%, respectively, and for paper print were measured as 100% and 71.9%, respectively, in which there were no significant differences between the two in the PPV (Z=1.5, P ≥ 0.05) and NPV (Z=1.58, P ≥ 0.05). The sensitivities of the plate and paper print in diagnosis of grade I (Z=0, P>0.05) and grade I, II (Z=1.67, P>0.05) were not significant. Although, in grade II (Z=2.03, P ≤ 0.05), the plate sensitivity was significantly higher than paper print. The specificity of plate in comparison to paper print by considering the significant level of Z ≥ 1.96 did not show a significant difference (P ≥ 0.05). Conclusion: In general, it seems that in case of lack of access to radiography plates, the use of paper prints can be a justified and appropriate action, due to its relatively good sensitivity and specificity. However, if you have access to radiography plates, it is certainly preferable to use it. of fit indexes, and very good concurrent validity support utility of this scale for Iranian primary school children.

Background and Aims: According to the research background and need to print CBCT images in case of emergency, this study has been done to compare the quality and accuracy of the two methods of film and paper printing for CBCT images. Materials and Methods: The study of CBCT images taken from 5 patients was done and the cross-sectional slices on Fotolusio DNP papers and film AGFA were printed. Afterward, the images was exmined by a maxillofacial radiologist. The images’ quality were identified and recorded with anatomical, from 1 to 4 on forms. The accuracy was determined by the diagnosis of alveolar canal area and the comparison with the gold standard. Data were analyzed using independent chi-square and Fisher exact tests’. Results: The images quality in anatomical landmarks consisting PDL (P=0.02), lamina dura (P=0.006), the inferior alveolar canal (P=0.01) and the filling (P=0.006) had a significant difference. There was no significant difference. For the lower border of the mandible landmark, there was no difference between the two methods of printing. In comparing the diagnostic accuracy between the two methods (P=1). Conclusion: The results showed that the diagnostic quality in film printing is better than paper printing and the diagnostic accuracy is the same in both methods.

Sixty participants were randomized to either i) Arm A: completed CTSA then PBA of OHIP-14, or ii) Arm B: PBA and then CTSA of OHIP-14 within the same day. User preference and time taken to complete the assessments were recorded. Agreement between CTSA and PBA was determined using directional difference (DD), absolute difference (AD), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).Results: There was no significant difference in CTSA and PBA OHIP-14 scores (P> 0.05). The magnitude of the DD in scores between assessment methods was small for overall scores and all domains (< 0.3). The AD in OHIP-14 scores was small (∼ 6% for overall score, between 8– 16% for domains). Agreement between CTSA and PBA was high (ICC=0.9; 95% CI=0.8– 0.9) for overall OHIP-14 scores, but ICC values varied across domains. Most (78%) preferred CTSA. There was no significant difference in time taken to complete assessments (P=0.09). Regression analyses did not identify any significant socio-demographic factor associated with absolute difference between CTSA and PBA scores.Conclusion: There is equivalence of measurements in OHRQoL assessments from CTSA and PBA, and the time taken to complete assessment by either means is similar. There is a greater preference for CTSA. Summary: Since Marx reported on osteonecrosis of the jaw caused by the injectable bisphosphonates (BPs) pamidronate and zoledronate, there have been numerous reports not only in Western countries, but in Japan as well, of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) as a pathology similar to radiation-related osteonecrosis/osteomyelitis of the jaw, which is accompanied by exposure of the bone. Osteonecrosis of the jaw similar to that occurring with BPs is also produced with the anti-receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand (RANKL) antibody denosumab, a bone resorption inhibitor that has a different mode of action from BPs, and there is also a report of osteonecrosis of the jaw related to bevacizumab, an angiogenic inhibitor. Because of this, in its newest position paper (2014), the AAOMS changed the nomenclature from BRONJ to “medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw” (MRONJ). This article presents an overview of the position paper on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw and the current status of the MRONJ in Japan. The study and documentation of occlusal-articulation relationships has a high diagnostic significance in patients with bruxism and bruxomania. The study aims on the basis of registration of occlusal contacts via articulating paper and the T-Scan system to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of both methods in occlusal diagnosis of patients with bruxism and bruxomania. Material and Methods: 40 patients with bruxism and / or bruxomania (29 women and 11 men) aged between 21 and 77 years from October 2010 to February 2014 was conducted computerized occlusal analysis using the systems T-Scan II (in 12 patients), T-Scan III (in 28 patients) and the software T-Scan III. All patients were subjected to registration of occlusal relationships in centric occlusion (CO) with articulating paper Bausch PROGRESS 100 µ and Bausch® Arti-Fol® 8 µ. Results and Discussion: In 90.0% of patients it is established unevenly distributed, irregular in size and intensity occlusal contacts. Essential factor for preventing the spontaneous bilateral closure with balanced forces is the presence of interceptive contacts and sliding occurring in the first frame of the occlusion time until the maximum intercuspation - MIP. Conclusion: Registration with articulating paper visualizes cumulative picture of the contacts in CO and interceptive contacts without being able to distinguish them in size and time of onset. Computerized occlusal analysis objectively and quantitatively determines interceptive contacts and distinguishes them from contacts in MIP and gives real meaning to the terms "strong" and "light contacts".

Microbial samples were obtained using paper points inserted to three different depths of the lesions: orifice of lesion; 2 mm into the lesion; and to the base of lesion. Culturing was used for recovery and identification of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Prevotella intermedia.Results: The recovery of each of the three putative periodontal pathogens was similar following sampling at the various depths of the lesions.Conclusions: The findings may be explained by the fact that the paper points become saturated as they pass through the orifice of the lesion. Absorption of microorganisms will therefore primarily occur at the orifice. Objective: To evaluate the influence of the sterilization process on paper cones as regards their absorption capacity, and consequently, root canal drying, in addition to the possible release of any antimicrobial or cytotoxic product. Methods: The cones used were of three of the brands found on the Brazilian market Dentsply (Dentsply Indústria e Comércio Ltda., Petrópolis, Brazil), Endopoints (Endopoints Indústria e Comércio Ltda., Paraíba do Sul, Brazil) and Tanari (Tanari Industrial Ltda., São Paulo, Brazil). To evaluate the absorption capacity, the cones were submitted to four sterilization cycles, and the modified Holland technique was performed. The antimicrobial/cytotoxic capacity was verified by means of depositing the sterilized cones in Petri dishes containing Miller-Hinton Agar and Blood Agar, seeded with S.aureus and E. coli. Results: The Dentsply (Dentsply Indústria e Comércio Ltda., Petrópolis, Brazil) and Tanari (Tanari Industrial Ltda., São Paulo, Brazil)cones presented greater absorption after the first sterilization cycle, followed by a drop in the second and third cycles, and a new increase in the fourth cycle. For the Endopoints (Endopoints Indústria e Comércio Ltda., Paraíba do Sul, Brazil) cones, the values were inverted, with a small drop in absorption after the first cycle, increase in the second and third cycles, and a new drop in the fourth cycle. None of the cones presented antimicrobial activity after the sterilization process. Conclusion: The sterilization process by damp heat does not alter the properties of absorption and there is no release of by-products from the tested paper cones.

Background: Across the European Union costs for the treatment of oral disease is expected to rise to €93 Billion by 2020 and be higher than those for stroke and dementia combined. A significant proportion of these costs will relate to the provision of care for older people. Dental caries severity and experience is now a major public health issue in older people and periodontal disease disproportionately affects older adults. Poor oral health impacts on older people’s quality of life, their self-esteem, general health and diet. Oral health care service provision for older people is often unavailable or poor, as is the standard of knowledge amongst formal and informal carers. The aim of this discussion paper is to explore some of the approaches that could be taken to improve the level of co-production in the design of healthcare services for older people.Main text: People’s emotional and practical response to challenges in health and well-being and the responsiveness of systems to their needs is crucial to improve the quality of service provision. This is a particularly important aspect of care for older people as felt, expressed and normative needs may be fundamentally different and vary as they become increasingly dependent. Co-production shifts the design process away from the traditional ‘top-down’ medical model, where needs assessments are undertaken by someone external to a community and strategies are devised that encourage these communities to become passive recipients of services. Instead, an inductive paradigm of partnership working and shared leadership is actively encouraged to set priorities and ultimately helps improve the translational gap between research, health policy and health-service provision. Discussion: The four methodological approaches discussed in this paper (Priority Setting Partnerships, Discrete Choice Experiments, Core Outcome Sets and Experience Based Co-Design) represent an approach that seeks to better engage with older people and ensure an inductive, co-produced process to the research and design of healthcare services of the future. These methods facilitate partnerships between researchers, healthcare professionals and patients to produce more responsive and appropriate public services for older people.KEYWORDS: older people, healthcare service design, oral health, co-production and co-creation

Os estudos científicos têm diferentes potenciais de influenciar práticas clínicas devido aos aspectos metodológicos do seu delineamento. A escolha do tipo de estudo mais adequado deve ser baseada no objetivo da pesquisa e em fatores práticos como questões éticas, amostra, tempo, custos e recursos disponíveis. O presente estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar a prevalência dos diferentes tipos de estudos na literatura odontológica brasileira. Foram avaliados 28 títulos de periódicos nacionais cujos fascículos compreendiam, total ou parcialmente, o período entre 1993 e 2003. Todos os 5. 453 artigos publicados nos 564 fascículos selecionados foram referenciados e submetidos à classificação do tipo de delineamento empregado, a partir de critérios predefinidos e formulário próprio para a avaliação. Os resultados mostraram as seguintes freqüências: 1. 341 (24,6%) pesquisas laboratoriais in vitro; 1. 302 (23,9%) revisões narrativas da literatura; 1. 064 (19,5%) relatos de caso; 862 (15,8%) estudos descritivos (transversal ou de prevalência); 351 (6,4%) ensaios clínicos; 242 (4,4%) séries de casos; 188 (3,4%) pesquisas em animais; 36 (0,7%) estudos coorte ou caso-controle; 4 (0,1%) revisões sistemáticas ou metanálise; e 63 (1,2%) não foram classificáveis. O resultado mostrou que a maioria dos artigos publicados refere-se a estudo de baixo potencial de estabelecer evidências diretamente aplicáveis à prática clínica (pesquisa laboratorial in vitro, revisões narrativas e relatos de caso). O baixo número de estudos com maior força de evidência ressalta a necessidade de ampliação do conhecimento de métodos baseados em evidências entre os pesquisadores brasileiros

A presença de umidade no interior do sistema de canais radiculares, após o preparo biomecânico e sua desinfecção, pode influenciar no selamento apical e no êxito da obturação endodôntica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do número de esterilizações em autoclave, sobre a capacidade e velocidade de absorção dos cones de papel empregados em Endodontia. Foram analisados 440 cones de papel número 40, dos quais dez cones de cada marca comercial receberam de zero à dez ciclos de esterilização em autoclave (134°C/15 psi/15 minutos). Após cada ciclo de esterilização, os cones foram avaliados quanto a capacidade e velocidade de absorção de solução de hipoclorito de sódio a 1%. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística por meio dos testes da ANOVA (dois critérios) e Tukey (5%). Pôde-se concluir que, quanto à capacidade de absorção, os cones que sofreram menor influência dos diversos ciclos de esterilização em autoclave foram, em ordem decrescente: Tanari, Tanari "cell pack", Conne e Diadent "cell pack". Quanto à velocidade de absorção, os cones que obtiveram os melhores resultados foram: Tanari "cell pack", Tanari, Conne e Diadent "cell pack". A autoclavação mostrou-se um procedimento viável, em até 10 ciclos, apenas para a esterilização de cones de papel absorvente da marca Tanari utilizados em Endodontia.The presence of humidity inside the root canal system after instrumentation and removal of the septic content can influence the apex sealing, and consequently, the success of the endodontic treatment. The goal of this paper was to evaluate the influence of the number of autoclave sterilization cycles on the absorbing capability and speed of absorption of paper points used in endodontic procedures. Four hundred and forty paper points number 40 were analyzed and the trade marks used were: Tanari, Tanari "cell pack" , Diadent "cell pack" and Conne. Ten points of each manufacturer received 0 to ten cycles of autoclave sterilization (134oC/15 psi/15 min). After each sterilization cycle, absorption capability and absorption velocity to 1% sodium hypochlorite solution were evaluated. Data were analyzed statistically by the ANOVA and Tukey tests. In conclusion, the trade marks which suffered less influence by the sterilization cycles in decreasing order were: Tanari, Tanari "cell pack" , Conne and Diadent. The best absorption velocities were observed in: Tanari "cell pack", Tanari, Conne and Diadent. The autoclave process seems to be a viable procedure, when 10 cycles are applied, only for the paper points of trade mark Tanari used in endodontic procedures.

PubMed ID: 19939240, Background. This paper describes the oral healthcare system and disease situation amongst children in Turkey. Considering the high prevalence and severity of dental caries, a proposal for improvement of oral health in this population group is formulated. Discussion. A virtual absence of palliative, preventive and restorative care characterises juvenile oral healthcare in Turkey. Consequently, carious cavities remain untreated, which may lead to pain, discomfort and functional limitation and, further, may impact negatively upon general health and cognitive development. As a first step to controlling dental caries, a national health programme including promotional, preventive and minimal intervention approaches for managing dental caries is proposed. The pros and cons of community-oriented caries-preventive measures are discussed. Daily tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste at home, in mother- and child-care centres, kindergartens, and schools is highlighted. Summary. The dental profession, government, university officials and other stakeholders need to meet and determine how best the oral health of children in Turkey can be improved. Objetivo: Evaluar la calidad del reporte de estudios descriptivos, clinicos y reportes de casos publicados en revistas del area odontologicas chilenas en el periodo 2002-2012.Metodo: Analisis bibliometrico de las publicaciones en revistas dentales chilenas indizadas del 2002 al 2012. Tres evaluadores calibrados (Kappa intraoperadores=.83) evaluaron 205 articulos: 150 reportes de casos, 37 estudios observacionales y 18 ensayos clinicos. La calidad del reporte se evaluo utilizando las pautas CARE para reportes de caso, STROBE para estudios observacionales y CONSORT para ensayos clinicos.Resultados: Los porcentajes de cumplimiento para los aspectos metodologicos por diseno fueron de 35% para los elementos requeridos en el reporte de caso, del 16% y 29% para los materiales y metodos de los estudios observacionales y clinicos; y 10% y 20% para los resultados de los estudios observacionales y clinicos.Conclusion: Los articulos del tipo reportes de caso, estudios observacionales y clinicos publicados en revistas del area odontologica chilenas en el periodo 2002-2012 carecen del informe de elementos basicos del diseno y resultados, lo que dificulta su replicabilidad asi como su aplicacion clinica.

Background To determine the severity of dental fluorosis in selected populations in Chiang Mai, Thailand with different exposures to fluoride and to explore possible risk indicators for dental fluorosis. Methods Subjects were male and female lifetime residents aged 8–13 years. For each child the fluoride content of drinking and cooking water samples were assessed. Digital images were taken of the maxillary central incisors for later blind scoring for TF index (10% repeat scores). Interview data explored previous cooking and drinking water use, exposure to fluoride, infant feeding patterns and oral hygiene practices. Results Data from 560 subjects were available for analysis (298 M, 262 F). A weighted kappa of 0.80 was obtained for repeat photographic scores. The prevalence of fluorosis (TF 3+) for subjects consuming drinking and cooking water with a fluoride concentration of 0.9 ppm F the prevalence of fluorosis (TF 3+) rose to 37.3%. Drinking and cooking water at age 3, water used for infant formula and water used for preparing infant food all demonstrated an increase in fluorosis severity with increase in water fluoride level (p Conclusions The consumption of drinking water with fluoride content >0.9 ppm and use of cooking water with fluoride content >1.6 ppm were associated with an increased risk of aesthetically significant dental fluorosis. Fluoride levels in the current drinking and cooking water sources were strongly correlated with fluorosis severity. Further work is needed to explore fluorosis risk in relation to total fluoride intake from all sources including food preparation.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of three bioceramic root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) biofilm. Material and methods: E. faecalis bacterial suspension was grown on filter paper discs on agar plates. After the incubation period, the discs were covered with four different root canal sealers: 1) Premixing bioceramic root canal sealer (TotalFill BC Sealer) ; 2) Dual component bioceramic sealer (BioRoot RCS) ; 3) Mineral trioxide agreggate based sealer (MTA Fillapex) ; 4) Epoxy resin- based selar (AH Plus). After contact time of 60 minutes, the sealers were removed, and the discs were transferred into sterile tubes containing phosphate buffered saline. After serial dilutions, the aliquots of the suspension were cultivated for 24 hours. After the incubation period, the colony forming units (CFUs) were counted. Results: There were no significant differences in antibacterial efficacy between the Total Fill BC Sealer and the AH Plus sealer (p=0.386). Statement of the Problem: After introducing digital radiography, practitioners started reading radiographs from computer monitors; however, many still prefer hard-copy radiographs. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the possible superiority of either type of radiograph recording media (computer monitor, film, or paper) in diagnosis and perception of the depth of the cariogenic lesions. Materials and Method: Twenty digital bitewing radiographs, obtained from 200 posterior extracted teeth, were displayed on an LG monitor and printed on paper and film using Kodak printers. Two observers independently measured lesions depth on the images. Serial sections of teeth were obtained and the sections were evaluated by a stereomicroscope to determine the actual depth of cariogenic lesions. The efficacy of the each medium was assessed by determining its specificity and sensitivity in comparison with those of histological images. Weighted kappa coefficients and the ROC analysis were used for the statistical analysis. Results: Strong intra- and inter-observer agreements (0.818 to 0.958, 0.77 to 0.85) were found for all detection methods. The highest Az value was obtained with the monitor-displayed images (Az: 0.879); however, differences between detection methods were not statistically significant (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Monitor-displayed bitewing radiographs, paper, and film prints used in our study performed similarly in the detection of proximal caries.

Infection of a surgical wound due to bacteria is a major problem for surgical patients. Cu-zeolite is a material that can suppress bacterial growth with reversible cation characteristics and adsorption to be developed into non-toxic disinfectants for humans. Packaging uses filter paper to keep disinfectant solutions or instruments that will be sterilized clean. This study aimed to observe the effects of contact time of natural Cu-zeolite on the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) bacteria. An experimental research was simple randomized design. Cu-zeolite 10 grams were packaged in Whatman no 42 paper bags measuring 5 x 5 cm2, contacted for 15, 30 and 45 minutes in 99.5 ml of distilled water exposed to 0.5 x 108 CFU / ml of S. pyogenes and P. aeruginosa. Subsequently, bacterial growth was calculated using total plate count method. The average growth of S.pyogenes for 15, 30 and 45 minutes (1840 ± 571.236 CFU; 29 ± 16.33 CFU and 0 CFU) while P. aeruginosa was (2776 ± 725.277 CFU; 55 ± 23.214 CFU and 0 CFU) respectively. Based on the independent t-test on Cu-zeolite, the bacterial growth in the 15th and 30th minute contact between S. pyogenes and P. aeruginosa was significantly different (pth and 30th minute contact.

PMID: 32523155 WOS:000541707500005 Objective: To estimate the actual parameters of bacterial load in subgingival plaque during periodontitis and peri-implantitis pathologies using the RT-PCR (real-time polymerase chain reaction) method and evaluate their associations with clinical periodontal indicators. Materials and Methods: Five different groups of subjects were selected according to a formulated design of the study: with mild/ moderate periodontitis, with severe periodontitis, with peri-implantitis, healthy periodontal group and healthy peri-implant group. Subgingival plaque samples were formed with paper points inserted in the pocket/sulcus area for 30 seconds. A standardized test the “ParodontoScreen” was provided for identification of target opportunistic pathogens (A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythia, P. intermedia, T. denticola) by the RT-PCR. Results: Bacterial load parameters demonstrated a significant tendency towards an increase within periodontitis progression and during the presence of peri-implantitis pathology. Each targeted mean bacterial load level was statistically associated with periodontitis or peri-implantitis pathology (p < 0, 05) according to the provided univariate analyses and upon condition that bacterial load parameters of healthy sites were used as reference for equiparation. The highest correlation values were found between periodontal probing depth and bacterial load parameters of A. actinomycetemcomitans (r=0, 37; p < 0, 05) and P. gingivalis (r=0, 28; p < 0, 05); and also between clinical attachment loss and bacterial load values of A. actinomycetemcomitans (r=0, 38; p < 0, 05) and P. gingivalis (r=0, 24; p < 0, 05). Conclusions: Periodontitis and peri-implantitis are associated with the same microbial pathogens even though the distribution pattern of their bacterial load and detection frequency parameters registered with RT-PCR could be distinct and linked to the individual patient-related conditions and the severity stage of pathology.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount of saliva secreted and calcium, bicarbonate, and phosphate ion concentration in patients receiving antihypertensive for five years or over five years (patient group) and in healthy patients (control group). Material and methods: The patient or experimental group included 31 subjects who were admitted to a cardiovascular clinic and had been receiving an antihypertensive drug therapy for more than five years. The control group included 31 healthy subjects. The measured amount of saliva was further used to determine the calcium, phosphate and bicarbonate ion concentration values. Calcium and phosphate ions were determined spectrophotometrically, while bicarbonate ions were determined by titration. Results: A two-waytest (Student’s test) was used to compare the values of variables. The amount of excreted saliva was statistically significantly lower in the patient group in non-stimulated (1.739 mL/5 min) and stimulated saliva (3.594 mL/5 min). Calcium ion concentration was statistically significantly lower in patient group in resting saliva (6.143 mg/dL). Bicarbonate and phosphate ion concentration in patient group was statistically significantly higher in non-stimulated (bicarbonate ion = 14.041 mmol/L, phosphate ion = 2.818 mmol/L) and stimulated saliva (bicarbonate ion = 10.872 mmol/L, phosphate ion = 1.454 mmol/L), respectively. Conclusion: A reduced amount of saliva and calcium ion concentration indicates the possibility of a higher frequency of hard dental tissue demineralization process. On the contrary, the increase in the phosphate and bicarbonate ion concentration in the patient group affects the regulation of acid-base balance, thus having a preventive effect.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the techniques of matricing used by Egyptian dentists, and evaluate the influence of these techniques on the reproduction of optimum proximal contacts for posterior proximal resin composite restorations. Material and methods: An online questionnaire was developed and sent to 785 dentists via e-mail and social media platforms. The survey asked the participants about the following: the highest academic degree achieved and their experience, techniques of matricing used, brands of matricing systems used, assessment of proximal contact points, their evaluation of the contact points they reproduced, and their assessment of the restorations’ emergence profiles. Results: A total of 415 dentists participated in the study (response rate 52.8%). 308 dentists (74%) preferred using the sectional matrix system, while 107 dentists (26%) preferred using the circumferential matrix system. One hundred twenty-six dentists (31%) reported that the circumferential matrix systems reproduced optimum contacts, 105 dentists (25%) reported tight contacts and 184 dentists (44%) reported open contacts. However, for the sectional matrix systems, the optimum contacts were reported by 279 dentists (67%) tight contacts by 109 dentists (26%) and open contacts by 27 dentists (7%). Objective The aim of this study was to investigate whether genetic susceptibility to chronic periodontitis, conferred by the presence of the IL-6 -572GG genotype or the IL-10 -592A allele, influences the outcomes following a non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT)over a long period of time. Material and methods Thirty-seven chronic periodontitis patients were divided into two groups according to genotype as susceptible (SCP) and non-susceptible (NSCP). All subjects were clinically evaluated at baseline and 3 years following NSPT. Blood samples were collected at baseline from the individuals who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. All participants received NSPT from a single periodontist who was blind to the genotype status of each patient. A statistical analysis was performed by comparing the variables between groups using the Mann-Whitney U test and between baseline and 3 years for each group using the Wilcoxon test. Results The mean age of the population was estimated to be 47.68±8.64 years and it included 51.4% females, 48.6% smokers, and 45.9% alcohol consumers. Following a genetic analysis, 70.3% of patients were homozygous carriers of the IL-6 -572G (IL-6 SCP), and 46.0% of them were carriers of the IL-10 -592A allele (IL-10 SCP). NSPT reduced all studied parameters (probing depth, attachment loss, bleeding on probing, percentage of sites with 4-6mm and ≥7mm pocket depth and attachment loss) to all participants, but the treatment outcome was not associated with the genotype. The SCP and NSCP individuals showed similar clinical parameters at baseline and at 3 years. Conclusions Within the limitations of this 3-year prospective cohort study in Caucasians diagnosed with chronic periodontitis, individuals susceptible to periodontal disease as determined by the presence of the IL-6 -572GG genotype or the IL-10 -592A allele showed similar treatment outcome following NSPT.

Background: Molar-incisor hypomineralisation is a disturbance in dental development that involves First permanent molars as well as permanent incisors with a prevalence that ranges from 2.5% to 40%. Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of atopic diseases on the devel-opment of molar-incisor hypomineralisation. Material and methods: The study was based on the re-view of the medical records of a group of 102 children whose age was between eight and 12 years and 11 months and who had previously been diagnosed with MIH. Results: An association (χ 2, p≤0.05) has been found between molar-incisor hypomineralisation in children’s mouths and the existence of: Atopic dermatitis (OR=2.504; 1.54-4.05 CI 95%), food allergies (OR=2.171; 1.03-4.56 CI 95%), aller-gic rhinitis (OR=0.17; 0.02-1.27 CI 95%), and asthmatic bronchitis/asthma (OR=1.707; 1.05-2.76 CI 95%). When analyzing the pathologies by location, we found that atopic dermatitis, food allergies, al-lergic rhinitis and asthma were more frequent in children who had (p≤0.05) #12, #11, #21, #22, #36, #31, #41 and #42 affected. Conclusions: The association between molar-incisor hypomineralisation And the presence of atopic diseases in the first 36 months of ife underlines the convenience of ap-proaching this problem from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Introduction Children with high dental anxiety display uncooperative behavior during dental procedures. Different self-assessment questionnaires are in use to estimate the prevalence of dental fear and anxiety (DFA) in children but they need to be tested for reliability and validity in different populations. Objectives The aim of this study was to test the reliability and validity of two scales for the assessment of child dental fear and anxiety in a sample of Croatian children. Material and Methods The sample comprised 202 pairs consisting of children and their mothers (97 boys and 105 girls) aged 5 - 12 years. Two scales were used to assess children’s DFA: the Children’s Fear Survey Schedule – Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS) and the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale - face version (MCDAS-f). The Corah’s Dental Anxiety Scale (CDAS) was used in the sample of children’s mothers. The average scores of cooperative children and children with behavior management problem (BMP) were compared. Results Cooperative children displayed significantly lower CFSS-DS scores than children with BMP (M = 28. 46 vs. M = 39. 36; P < 0.001). The average MCDAS-f score was significantly higher in children with BMP than in cooperative children (M = 28. 07 vs. 20. 01; P < 0.001). The CFSS-DS showed high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0. 90), while internal consistency of MCDAS-f was good (α = 0. 73). The maternal CDAS showed good internal consistency (α = 0, 89). The correlations with other self-report measurements of DFS show good validity of all scales. The correlations between CFSS-DS and MCDAS-f were highly significant (r = 0.482; P < 0. 01) as well as the correlations of CFSS-DS and MCDAS-f with CDAS scores (r = 0.223; P < 0. 01 and r = 0.198; P < 0. 01, respectively. Conclusion The obtained results suggest that both the CFSS-DS scale and the MCDAS-f scale are reliable and valid scales for measuring dental fear and anxiety in children in a sample of Croatian children. The MCDAS-f scale has shown slightly lower internal consistency but it is suitable for use in young children. In addition, the MCDAS-f scale is simple to administer.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of pH conditioners on tooth bleaching using hematoporphirin‐stained paper and artificially discolored bovine tooth model. Experimental bleaching gels containing 23% hydrogen peroxide, adjusting pH 7.0 by different pH conditioners (NaOH, NaHCO3, Na2CO3, KOH, KHCO3, and K2CO3), were prepared. Each bleaching gel was applied on a hematoporphirin‐stained paper, and the light was exposed for 5 min. Before and after bleaching, color was measured and color difference was calculated. Artificially discolored bovine tooth samples were prepared and bleached by four experimental bleaching gels containing NaOH, NaHCO3, Na2CO3, or KHCO3. The bleaching time was 10 min with light exposure, and bleaching was repeated 10 times. The color of bleached surface was measured at each bleaching period, and color difference was calculated. In the experiment using hematoporphirin‐stained paper, degrees of color difference were KHCO3 > NaHCO3 > KOH > NaOH > Na2CO3 ≥ K2CO3. In the experiment using bovine teeth, degrees of color difference were KHCO3 > NaHCO3 > NaOH > Na2CO3. It was concluded that the bleaching materials with same pH and different pH conditioners showed different bleaching effects and that both cation and anion in the pH conditioners affected bleaching effect.

Dental materials used in root canal treatment have undergone substantial improvements over the past decade. However, one area that still remains to be addressed is the ability of root canal fillings to effectively entomb, kill bacteria, and prevent the formation of a biofilm, all of which will prevent reinfection of the root canal system. Thus far, no published review has analysed the literature on antimicrobial additives to root canal sealers and their influence on physicochemical properties. The aim of this paper was to systematically review the current literature on antimicrobial additives in root canal sealers, their anti-fouling effects, and influence on physicochemical properties. A systematic search was performed in two databases (PubMed and Scopus) to identify studies that investigated the effect of antimicrobial additives in epoxy resin-based root canal sealers. The nature of additives, their antimicrobial effects, methods of antimicrobial testing are critically discussed. The effects on sealer properties have also been reviewed. A total of 31 research papers were reviewed in this work. A variety of antimicrobial agents have been evaluated as additives to epoxy resin-based sealers, including quaternary ammonium compounds, chlorhexidine, calcium hydroxide, iodoform, natural extracts, antibiotics, antifungal drugs, and antimicrobial agent-functionalised nanoparticles. Antimicrobial additives generally improved the antimicrobial effect of epoxy resin-based sealers mainly without deteriorating the physicochemical properties, which mostly remained in accordance with ISO and ANSI/ADA specifications.

Background To assess the ability of fluorescence imaging to detect a dose response relationship between fluorosis severity and different levels of fluoride in water supplies compared to remote photographic scoring in selected populations participating in an observational, epidemiological survey in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Methods Subjects were male and female lifetime residents aged 8-13 years. For each child the fluoride content of cooking water samples (CWS) was assessed to create categorical intervals of water fluoride concentration. Fluorescence images were taken of the maxillary central incisors and analyzed for dental fluorosis using two different software techniques. Output metrics for the fluorescence imaging techniques were compared to TF scores from blinded photographic scores obtained from the survey. Results Data from 553 subjects were available. Both software analysis techniques demonstrated significant correlations with the photographic scores. The metrics for area effected by fluorosis and the overall fluorescence loss had the strongest association with the photographic TF score (Spearman’s rho 0.664 and 0.652 respectively). Both software techniques performed well for comparison of repeat fluorescence images with ICC values of 0.95 and 0.85 respectively. Conclusions This study supports the potential use of fluorescence imaging for the objective quantification of dental fluorosis. Fluorescence imaging was able to discriminate between populations with different fluoride exposures on a comparable level to remote photographic scoring with acceptable levels of repeatability.

Objectives: The development of third molars can be helpful in dental age estimation of adolescents and in early adult period. We tested the repeatability and accuracy of the three dental age radio-graphic methods (Olze, Demirjian and Solari and Abramovitch) and evaluated which method is more useful. We also aimed at testing to find the correlation of estimated dental and chronological age by these three methods. Material and methods: The orthopantomographs (OPGs) of 1007 individuals (8 - 25 years) were divided into two groups (cca 500 OPGs) – one group of OPGs has been presented with all four third molars, while another one was registered with third molar/s hypodontia. And all of OPGs were assessed, to verify the three methods (Olze, Demirjian and Solari and Abramovitch) for age estimation based on third molar development. Results: There was a high Spearman’s correlation coefficient between stages of development of wisdom tooth and chronological age of subjects by all these three methods. Conclusion: We may recommend using third molars for assessing the dental age by Olze, Demirjian and Solari and Abramovitch dental method as well, on Bosnian and Herzegovinian population.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate shade matching ability of dental professionals and students using the VITA 3D-Master shade guide. Materials and methods: A hundred and twenty participants have been assigned to one of four groups as follows: specialists in prosthodontics (SPs), residents in prosthodontics (RPs), dental technicians (DTs) and dental students (DSs). The Toothguide Training Box (TTB) was used to test the participants’ shade-matching ability based on using 3 exercises and a final test. The mistakes were recorded during the exercises and mistake ratios (MR) were calculated. Time, scores, and color difference values (ΔE) were recorded and calculated. The one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the differences, and multiple regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationship in mean MRs, time, score and ΔE values between the groups. Introduction: Dental fear or dental phobia is caused by previous unpleasant dental experiences and pain. It can result in delaying or avoiding dental visits. Most often it leads to individuals avoiding visiting the dentist until physical pain completely impairs the quality of life. Objectives: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a method of pain relief involving the use of a mild electrical current. The main aim of this study was to examine whether the TENS device affects the reduction of anxiety and fear during dental procedures. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on a sample of 125 respondents, aged 9-14 years. Statistical significance of differences between pre- and post-treatment results on all applied measuring instruments was verified by the t-test for dependent samples. The calculation was performed for all respondents and individually for the three observed groups. The Children`s Fear Survey Schedule – Dental Subscale test was used to assess anxiety and fear. Results: The results on the CFSS-DS scale in all subjects did not differ statistically significantly before and after treatment (p > 0.05). The results on the CFSS-DS scale in subjects who received TENS were statistically significantly different before and after treatment (p < 0.01). The results on the CFSSDS scale in subjects who received local anesthesia were statistically significantly different before and after treatment (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The TENS device had an anxiolytic effect after the first visit.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare three color parameters assessed on the maxillary right central incisors using a spectrophotometer as the gold standard, along with RAW mobile calibrated and non-calibrated photos in different light conditions. Materials and methods: A total of 30 dental students participated in the study. CIE L*a*b* values were measured in the middle third of each maxillary right central incisor spectrophotometrically and digitally on RAW mobile dental photos using different light conditions (F-frontal light; L-lateral light; D-lateral light with diffusers; P- polarizing filter on frontal light; H-hybrid filter as combination of frontal light with polarizing filter and lateral lights with diffusers) with LEDs (light emitting diode) in full power, and with gray card calibration. The obtained results were compared. Results: Mean a* and b* values on calibrated, as well as mean L* values on non-calibrated RAW mobile photos did not significantly differ in different light conditions (P>0.05). CIE L*a*b* values on non-calibrated polarizing RAW mobile photos completely matched the same values obtained using a spectrophotometer on the subject’s maxillary right central incisor (P>0.05). Conclusions: Different light conditions and measuring procedures affected CIE L*a*b* values on RAW mobile photos in this study. Within the limitations, non-calibrated RAW mobile photos using a lightening device with polarizing filters on frontal LED light in standardized conditions can be a useful tool for digital dental shade determination.

Objective: To determine the effect of two adhesive systems and a glass ionomer coating resin on fluoride release and concurrent pH changes over a period of 168 days. Material and methods: Four restorative materials were investigated: a giomer Beautiful II, an “alkasite” material Cention, a conventional composite Filtek Z250, and a glass ionomer cement Fuji IX Extra. Light-cured composite specimens were coated using G-aenial Bond and Clearfil Universal Bond Quick. Glass ionomer specimens were coated using GC Fuji Coat LC. Uncoated specimens were used as references. Quantitative fluoride release and pH changes were measured after 1 h, 24 h, 2 days, 7 days, 28 days, 84 days, and 168 days. Results: The cumulative fluoride release after 168 days increased for uncoated specimens in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention < Fuji IX Extra. A comparatively lower fluoride release was measured for the composites coated with Clearfil Universal Bond Quick, with cumulative values after 168 days increasing in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention. The composites coated with G-aenial Bond showed lower fluoride release compared to the uncoated specimens, with cumulative values increasing in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention. The composites coated with G-aenial Bond showed pH values in the acidic range (4.4- 5.7) after 1 h and 24 h. Conclusion: Fluoride release varied among the investigated restorative materials and depended on the use of dental adhesives and coatings. The pH of all materials, coating types and time points varied.

Material and methods: Sixty extracted sound human molar teeth were used and 120 class II slot cavities were prepared in mesial and distal surfaces. The gingival margins were located 1 mm below the cementoenamel junction. All specimens were randomly divided in 4 groups (n=15): Group I: High-Viscous Glass Ionomer (Fuji IX GP) Group II: Resin Modified Glass Ionomer (Fuji II LC) Group III: Glass Hybrid Ionomer (Equia-fil Forte), Group IV: Composite Resin (G'aenial Posterior). In open sandwich restoration groups, glass ionomer materials were placed to gingival floor in 1 mm thickness and rest of the cavity was filled with resin composite. After the restorations in mesial surfaces had been performed, distal cavities were restored with the same protocol after saliva contamination. The specimens were thermo-cycled for 10000 cycles at 5 degrees C to 55 degrees C and immersed in methylene blue dye solution (% 0,5) for 24 hours. Then, they were sectioned vertically through the center of the restorations from mesial to distal surface with a water-cooled diamond saw with 1mm thickness. Subsequently, the dye penetration was evaluated with image analysis software. Data were statistically analyzed (p0.05). Additionally, there was not a statistically significant difference between the no contamination and saliva contaminated groups regardless of dental materials tested (p>0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, in open sandwich restorations, saliva contamination did not show an adverse effect on microleakage irrespective of dental materials tested. Glass hybrid ionomers and resin modified glass ionomers showed lower microleakage scores in gingival margins compared to high-viscous glass ionomer material in no contamination groups.

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the possibility of sex and age estimation in a Brazilian sample, using the following five mandibular measurements: coronoid height, gonial angle, bigo-nial distance, ramus height, maximum length. Material and methods: In total, 103 mandibles were measured, 53 female and 50 male, grouped according to the age in 5 different groups. Two differ-ent observers performed all these measurements. For statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA was used with a significance level of 5% to verify if the mandibular measurements were related to age. The Stu-dent t-test was used for comparisons between the sex samples. Eighty three samples were used to develop a logistic regression model. The intra-observer and inter-observer differences were evalu-ated using the Kappa coefficient. Results: The sex differences were statistically significant in all the variables, and all of them were larger in men, apart from the variable related to the gonial angle (GA), which was larger in women. For the logistic regression formula, the variables used were: bigonial dis-tance and mandibular ramus, with 90% accuracy. For age, the measurements did not show a pattern. The inter and intra-observer values were greater than 0.85. Conclusion: In conclusion, it is possible to estimate sex using mandibular measurements, but it is not recommended to use these measure-ments for age estimation.

Objectives: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a disorder which is described as burning sensation of the oral mucosa without pathological changes. Most of the patients have some underlying stressful conditions. Stress induces an increase in secretion of different endocrine glands resulting in higher levels of glucocorticoids. One of the options for treatment of BMS includes low level laser therapy (LLLT). The aim of this research was to determine salivary cortisol levels and intensity of burning symptoms in BMS patients before and after LLLT. Material and Methods: Twenty-three participants were allocated by randomization in two groups: 12 patients in the study group and 11 patients in the placebo group. Cortisol levels in all patients were analyzed from the sample of saliva collected without stimulation. In both groups, the LLLT was performed once a day for ten consecutive days (excluding weekend) with Ga-Al-As light-emitting diode type of laser, with a wavelength of 685nm. In the control group, LLLT was done with inactive laser probe which was only emitting audio signal. The intensity of burning symptoms was measured by a visual analogue scale (VAS). The VAS and unstimulated saliva were measured at baseline and on the last day of the LLLT. A quantitative analysis of saliva was performed using competitive commercial ELISA-kit. Results: VAS scores and salivary cortisol levels were significantly lower in both groups after LLLT. Conclusions: LLLT can be useful in patients with BMS for reducing burning symptoms and salivary cortisol level. Future studies on a larger number of patients should clarify whether the positive results are an outcome of laser effectiveness or of placebo effect.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the usage of caries risk assessment (CRA) by Croatian general practitioners and evaluate their knowledge and attitudes towards CRA. Material and methods: A link to an online questionnaire was sent via e-mail to a sample of 1,500 general dentists in Croatia. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, logistic regression analyses and chi-square tests. Results: Of 257 respondents, 47% performed CRA routinely, but only 4.5% of them used a specific CRA form. The significance of different actors in the development of a treat-ment plan varied considerably among respondents. Furthermore, in 77% of the respondents CRA was a basis for planning individual caries prevention (ICP). The association between CRA and ICP, and be-tween CRA and treatment planning was statistically significant (p=0.001). The practitioners doing CRA more often plan their treatment and ICP according to CRA. The use of CRA was not influenced by specialty and dentists’ experience. Conclusions: In a considerable percentage (53%) of Croatian general dentists, CRA is not part of their routine practice, and there is a strong association between the use of CRA and treatment plans and ICP. There is a need to promote the use of CRA in daily dental practice in Croatia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of fluoride ions present in various solvent solutions and compare it to the label amount of fluoride concentration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The gel containing amine fluoride and sodium fluoride was compared to gel containing sodium fluoride only. The solvents used in this study were distilled water, redistilled water, tap water, 0.9% sodium chloride solution and the artificial saliva. The amount of fluoride ion (F-) was determined by the use of fluoride ion-selective electrode. The ANOVA and the Post hoc Tukey's test were used. The significance level was α = 5%. RESULTS: The differences between F- ion release in various solvents were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The F- ion concentrations measured in both gels' redistilled water solutions were higher than the label concentration. There was a significant difference in fluoride ion release in sodium fluoride only gel solutions. Fluoride ion release was significantly different in combined fluoride gel solutions. CONCLUSIONS: Amine fluorides do not interact with other ions present in the solution, whereas F- ion release from sodium fluoride alters when other ions are dissolved in the same solution. Background: Currency notes represent a universal medium for transmission of bacteria in the environment and among humans. Care should be taken by those handling these currencies. Aim: To quantitatively assess and compare the total bacterial load of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Proteus species present on the currency notes circulating in the open market area and hospitals in Mangalore city. Methodology: A total of 24 frequently circulated currency notes were collected from open markets and hospitals (12 from each group). They were then deposited in sterile pouches. Samples were collected using moistened cotton swabs and inoculated onto MacConkey agar for bacterial growth. The isolated bacteria were then assessed for the percentage of bacteria and colony-forming units (CFUs) on the notes using standardized microbial analysis. Results: Cultures after microbial analysis showed bacterial contamination with S. aureus, E. coli, Klebsiella, and aerobic spore-bearing bacteria. Approximately >103 CFUs/plate were found. In the hospital group, isolated organisms comprised S. aureus (54%) and E. coli(25%); in the open market areas, E. coli(36%) and S. aureus (38%) were found. Proteus species were not present on any of the samples. Intergroup statistical analysis carried out using the Chi-square test was statistically significant (P = 0.034). Conclusion: The study concluded that the notes from hospitals were contaminated more with S.aureus than in open markets, whereas E. coli was found to be more in open market areas than in hospitals.
