Copper (Cu) is the main interconnect conductor for integrated circuits (IC), and its processing quality is very important to device performance. Herein, a hybrid process of plasma oxidation and femtosecond laser (fs-laser) ablation was proposed for the nanoscale precision removal of Cu in integrated circuits. In this hybrid process, the surface layer of Cu was oxidized to the copper oxide by plasma oxidation, and then the fs-laser with a laser fluence lower than the Cu ablation threshold was used to remove the copper oxide without damaging the underlying Cu. Theoretically, the surface temperature evolutions of Cu and copper oxide under the femtosecond laser were studied by the two-temperature model, and it was revealed that the ablation threshold of copper oxide is much lower than that of Cu. The experimental results showed that the ablation threshold of copper oxide is lower than that of Cu, which is consistent with the theoretical analysis. Using the hybrid process, a surface roughness of 3 nm and a removal accuracy of 4 nm were obtained in the process of Cu film processing, which were better than those obtained by fs-laser ablation. This demonstrated that the hybrid process has good application potential in the field of copper micromachining.

Two-photon light-sheet microscopy (2P-SPIM) provides a unique combination of advantages for fast and deep fluorescence imaging in live tissues. Detecting coherent signals such as second-harmonic generation (SHG) in 2P-SPIM in addition to fluorescence would open further imaging opportunities. However, light-sheet microscopy involves an orthogonal configuration of illumination and detection that questions the ability to detect coherent signals. Indeed, coherent scattering from micron-sized structures occurs predominantly along the illumination beam. By contrast, point-like sources such as SHG nanocrystals can efficiently scatter light in multiple directions and be detected using the orthogonal geometry of a light-sheet microscope. This study investigates the suitability of SHG light-sheet microscopy (SHG-SPIM) for fast imaging of SHG nanoprobes. Parameters that govern the detection efficiency of KTiOPO4 and BaTiO3 nanocrystals using SHG-SPIM are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The effects of incident polarization, detection numerical aperture, nanocrystal rotational motion, and second-order susceptibility tensor symmetries on the detectability of SHG nanoprobes in this specific geometry are clarified. Guidelines for optimizing SHG-SPIM imaging are established, enabling fast in vivo light-sheet imaging combining SHG and two-photon excited fluorescence. An experimental study of laser-produced plasmas is performed by irradiating a planar tin target by laser pulses, of 4.8 ns duration, produced from a KTP-based 2-µm-wavelength master oscillator power amplifier. Comparative spectroscopic investigations are performed for plasmas driven by 1-µm- and 2-µm-wavelength pulsed lasers, over a wide range of laser intensities spanning 0.5 − 5 × 1011 W/cm 2. Similar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra in the 5.5–25.5 nm wavelength range and underlying plasma ionicities are obtained when the intensity ratio is kept fixed at I1µm/I2µm = 2.4(7). Crucially, the conversion efficiency (CE) of 2-µm-laser energy into radiation within a 2% bandwidth centered at 13.5 nm relevant for industrial applications is found to be a factor of two larger, at a 60 degree observation angle, than in the case of the denser 1-µm-laser-driven plasma. Our findings regarding the scaling of the optimum laser intensity for efficient EUV generation and CE with drive laser wavelength are extended to other laser wavelengths using available literature data.

The continuous wave (CW) and passively Q-switched (PQS) performances of diode-pumped Nd:(LaxGd1-x)(3)Gd5O12 (Nd:LaGGG) at 1.33 mu m are achieved for the first time to our knowledge. The maximum CW output power of 5.1 W is obtained with the optical-optical conversion efficiency of 25.3% and the slope efficiency of 26.6%. In the PQS operation, by using the V3+:YAG crystal as the saturable absorber, the maximum average output power, shortest pulse width, largest pulse energy, and highest peak power are measured to be 1.1 W, 27.54 ns, 75.78 mu J, and 2.44 kW, respectively.

Coupling photochemistry with flow microreactors enables novel synthesis strategies with higher efficiencies compared to batch systems. Improving the reproducibility and understanding of the photochemical reaction mechanisms requires quantitative tools such as chemical actinometry. However, the choice of actinometric systems which can be applied in microreactors is limited, due to their short optical pathlength in combination with a large received photon flux. Furthermore, actinometers for the characterization of reactions driven by visible light between 500 and 600 nm (e.g. photosensitized oxidations) are largely missing. In this paper, we propose a new visible-light actinometer which can be applied in flow microreactors between 480 and 620 nm. This actinometric system is based on the photoisomerization reaction of a diarylethene derivative from its closed to the open form. The experimental protocol for actinometric measurements is facile and characterized by excellent reproducibility and we also present an analytical estimation to calculate the photon flux. Furthermore, we propose an experimental methodology to determine the average pathlength in microreactors using actinometric measurements. Nanostructures of platinum-carbon nanocomposite material have been formed by electron-beam induced deposition. These consist of nanodots and nanowires with a minimum size ∼20 nm, integrated within ∼100 nm nanogap n-type silicon-on-insulator transistor structures. The nanodot transistors use ∼20 nm Pt/C nanodots, tunnel-coupled to Pt/C nanowire electrodes, bridging the Si nanogaps. Roomerature single-electron transistor operation has been measured, and single-electron current oscillations and 'Coulomb diamonds' observed. In nanowire transistors, the temperature dependence from 290 to 8 K suggests that the current is a combination of thermally activated and tunnelling transport of carriers across potential barriers along the current path, and that the Pt/C is p-type at low temperature.

We numerically show the advantages of using diamond-on-insulator (DOI) waveguides to design compact supercontinuum (SC) light sources for the visible (VIS) wavelength range. We conclude that the DOI platform is more suitable than silicon nitride waveguides for tailoring the dispersion in such a way that a zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW) is obtained in the VIS, as is required to achieve efficient VIS SC generation (SCG). After designing a DOI waveguide that features a ZDW at ∼600 nm, we exploit it to numerically obtain a smooth SC ranging from 453 nm to 1030 nm above the -30 dB point after propagation over 4 mm. Our result extends beyond the state-of-the-art shortest VIS wavelengths induced by SCG in integrated waveguides, while using ∼26 times lower input energy and a shorter waveguide length, thus showcasing the potential of the DOI platform for on-chip VIS SC light sources.

Nowadays, buffer-gas cooling represents an invaluable option to produce cold stable molecules, both in view of secondary cooling/trapping strategies towards the achievement of quantum degeneracy and for fundamental studies of complex molecules. From this follows a demand to establish a pool of specialized, increasingly precise spectroscopic interrogation techniques. Here, we demonstrate a general approach to Lamb-dip ro-vibrational spectroscopy of buffergas-cooled molecules. The saturation intensity of the selected molecular transition is achieved by coupling the probe laser to a high-finesse optical cavity surrounding the cold sample. A cavity ring-down technique is then implemented to perform saturation sub-Doppler measurements as the buffer (He) and molecular gas flux are varied. As an example, the (v(1) + v(3)) R(1) ro-vibrational line in a 20 Kelvin acetylene sample is addressed. By referencing the probe laser to a Rb/GPS dock, the corresponding line-center frequency as well as the self and foreign (i.e., due to the buffer gas) collisional broadening coefficients are absolutely determined. Our approach represents an important step towards the development of a novel method to perform ultra-precise ro-vibrational spectroscopy on an extremely wide range of cold molecules. In this respect, we finally discuss a number of relevant upgrades underway in the experimental setup to considerably improve the ultimate spectroscopic performance. We demonstrate, what is to our knowledge, the shortest pulses directly generated to date from a solid-state laser, mode locked with a graphene saturable absorber (GSA). In the experiments, a low-threshold diode-pumped Cr3+: LiSAF laser was used near 850 nm. At a pump power of 275 mW provided by two pump diodes, the Cr3+: LiSAF laser produced nearly transform-limited, 19-fs pulses with an average output power of 8.5 mW. The repetition rate was around 107 MHz, corresponding to a pulse energy and peak power of 79 pJ and 4.2 kW, respectively. Once mode locking was initiated with the GSA, stable, uninterrupted femtosecond pulse generation could be obtained. In addition, the femtosecond output of the laser could be tuned from 836 nm to 897 nm with pulse durations in the range of 80-190 fs. We further performed detailed mode locking initiation tests across the full cavity stability range of the laser to verify that pulse generation was indeed started by the GSA and not by Kerr lens mode locking., European Research Council (ERC)

Fiber lasers are a fast growing class of lasers due to their reliability, efficiency and flexibility. This has made fiber lasers a versatile tool for manufacturing, sensing and healthcare, not forgetting the contribution of Erbium-doped amplifiers to optical communications. Yet available wavelengths by direct emission are quite restricted to the visible and near infrared wavelength interval (500 nm to 2 micron), with very few offering high power and efficient operation, namely 1 micron, 1.5 micron and 2 micron wavelengths. In this paper we comment on the state of the art and future challenges in the field of fiber lasers to address new wavelength and new applications. In particular to extended the emission interval above 3 micron. This work collects the experience of the COST MP1401 Network on fiber lasers and their application and will present some of the areas were efforts have been focused. More exhaustive material will be presented at the conference.

We demonstrate efficient laser-diode pumped multi-gigahertz (GHz) self-mode-locked praseodymium (Pr3+) visible lasers with broadband spectra from green to deep red for the first time to our knowledge. With a Pr3+ -doped GdLiF4 crystal, stable self-mode-locked visible pulsed lasers at the wavelengths of 522 nm, 607 nm, 639 nm, and 720 nm have been obtained with the repetition rates of 2.8 GHz, 3.1 GHz, 3.1 GHz, and 3.0 GHz, respectively. The maximum output power was 612 mW with the slope efficiency of 46.9% at 639 nm. The mode-locking mechanism was theoretically analyzed. The stable second-harmonic mode-locking with doubled repetition frequency was also realized based on the Fabry-Perot effect formed in the laser cavity. In addition, we find that the polarization directions were turned with lasing wavelengths. This work may provide a new way for generating efficient ultrafast pulses with high- and changeable-repetition rates in the visible range. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

We numerically investigate the capabilities and advantages of Raman lasers based on integrated single-crystal diamond ring resonators. To this end, we first model continuous-wave (CW) Raman lasing action while taking into account the lasing directionality, the linear and nonlinear losses, and the coupling of the fields between the bus and ring sections of racetrack-shaped diamond ring resonators. We then consider the design of the ring resonators for a short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) and an ultraviolet (UV) Raman laser. Using our Raman lasing model, we determine the lasing directionality, pump threshold and lasing efficiency of the SWIR and UV devices. We find that both can yield efficient CW operation with SWIR and UV lasing slope efficiencies of 33 % and 65 %, respectively. These results showcase the potential of integrated diamond ring Raman lasers for producing wavelengths that are challenging to generate with other types of integrated lasers.

Discrimination between intra- and extravascular needle position is essential for procedure safety. Spectral tissue sensing (STS), based on optical spectroscopy, can provide tissue information directly from the needle tip. The primary objective of the trial was to investigate if STS can reliably discriminate intra-vascular (venous) from non-vascular punctures. In 20 healthy volunteers, a needle with an STS stylet was inserted, and measurements were performed for two intended locations: the first was subcutaneous, while the second location was randomly selected as either subcutaneous or intravenous. The needle position was assessed using ultrasound (US) and aspiration. The operators who collected the data from the spectral device were blinded to the insertion and ultrasonographic visualization procedure and the physician was blinded to the spectral data. Following offline spectral analysis, a prediction of intravascular or subcutaneous needle placement was made and compared with the "true" needle tip position as indicated by US and aspiration. Data for 19 volunteers were included in the analysis. Six out of 8 intended vascular needle placements were defined as intravascular according to US and aspiration. The remaining two intended vascular needle placements were negative for aspiration. For the other 11 final needle locations, the needle was clearly subcutaneous according to US examination and no blood was aspirated. The Mann-Whitney U test yielded a p-value of 0.012 for the between-group comparison. The differences between extra- and intravascular were in the within-group comparison computed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was a p-value of 0.022. In conclusion, STS is a promising method for discriminating between intravascular and extravascular needle placement. The information provided by this method may complement current methods for detecting an intravascular needle position.

The angular distribution of the fragment ions ejected from the interaction of methyl iodide clusters with 20 fs strong laser pulses is studied by means of a mass spectrometer. Three types of angular distributions, one isotropic and two anisotropic, have been observed and their dependence on the laser intensity has been studied. There is strong evidence that the ions exhibiting anisotropic angular distribution with a maximum in the direction parallel to the laser polarization vector are produced via an electron impact ionization process. A longitudinally pumped, widely tunable, solid-state Yb:KYF4 laser was developed with special design for applications to optical frequency metrology and absolute frequency stabilization. The KYF4 crystalline host, combined with efficient diode pumping, allows for wide wavelength tunability at about 1.03 mu m in a single transverse mode. Two different laser cavity designs were experimentally investigated. The combined use of an intracavity birefringent filter and uncoated glass etalons provides single-frequency output power at the 100-mW level in a folded-cavity resonator. A second hemispherical linear cavity was also developed with one or two coated intracavity etalons for single-frequency operation. The novel laser sources were thoroughly characterized in terms of output power and beam quality, amplitude noise, wavelength tunability, and single-axial-mode operation. High-quality TEMoo single-frequency laser radiation opens the way to the development of a new optical frequency standard based on the 12 molecule at 0.5-mu m wavelength.

We present a comparative analysis on the growth, the spectroscopic features, and the cw laser action of room-temperature Yb(5%):LiYF4 (YLF) and Yb(10%):KYF4 (KYF) crystals. Optical slope efficiencies of 33% and 52% have been demonstrated for Yb:YLF and Yb:KYF crystals, respectively. A remarkable wide wavelength tunability from 1.01 to 1.07 mu m has been obtained for both laser crystals.

We propose high index contrast InGaP photonic wires as a platform for the integration of nonlinear optical functions in the telecom wavelength window. We characterize the linear and nonlinear properties of these waveguide structures. Waveguides with a linear loss of 12 dB/cm and which are coupled to a single mode fiber through gratings with a -7.5 dB coupling loss are realized. From four wave mixing experiments, we extract the real part of the nonlinear parameter γ to be 475 ± 50 W(-1)m(-1) and from nonlinear transmission measurements we infer the absence of two-photon absorption and measure a three-photon absorption coefficient of (2.5 ± 0.5) x 10(-2) cm(3)GW(-2).

We theoretically demonstrate a novel approach for generating Mid-InfraRed SuperContinuum (MIR SC) by using concatenated fluoride and chalcogenide glass fibers pumped with a standard pulsed Thulium (Tm) laser (TFWHM=3.5ps, P0=20kW, νR=30MHz, and Pavg=2W). The fluoride fiber SC is generated in 10m of ZBLAN spanning the 0.9–4.1μm SC at the −30dB level. The ZBLAN fiber SC is then coupled into 10cm of As2Se3 chalcogenide Microstructured Optical Fiber (MOF) designed to have a zero-dispersion wavelength (λZDW) significantly below the 4.1μm InfraRed (IR) edge of the ZBLAN fiber SC, here 3.55μm. This allows the MIR solitons in the ZBLAN fiber SC to couple into anomalous dispersion in the chalcogenide fiber and further redshift out to the fiber loss edge at around 9μm. The final 0.9–9μm SC covers over 3 octaves in the MIR with around 15mW of power converted into the 6–9μm range.

A batch fabrication process for nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) based on sidewall transfer lithography (STL) is demonstrated. The STL is used to form nanoscale flexible silicon suspensions entirely by conventional photolithography. A two-step process for combining microscale and nanoscale features is used to fabricate double-ended and single-ended electrothermal actuators with a minimum feature width of 100 nm and an aspect ratio of 40:1. All devices are fabricated by deep reactive ion etching in 4.5-μm-thick silicon using bonded silicon-on-insulator material. The process could allow low cost fabrication of nanoscale sensors and actuators.

We report a rigorous study of the spectroscopic, laser and thermal properties of a 10at.% and a 15at.% Yb:LuAG crystals. A loss mechanism is observed in the medium with the highest doping, pumped at 936 nm and 968 nm, as a sharp and dramatic decrease of the laser output power is measured at higher excitation densities. The nonlinearity of the loss mechanism is confirmed by the fluorescence data and by the thermal lens. In particular, the dioptric power of the thermal lens acquired at different pumping levels shows a strong deviation of the expected linear trend. Here we report the influence of both the concentration and the ion excitation density of Yb3+ on the output powers, the slope efficiencies and the thresholds. Conversely excellent results are achieved with the 10at.%, which does not show any loss mechanism as at 1046 nm it delivers 11.8 W with a slope efficiency of eta(s) = 82%, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest value reported in literature for this material. We show that a significant enhancement of the photon flux produced by high harmonic generation can be obtained through guided configuration at high laser intensity largely above the saturation intensity. We identify two regimes. At low pressure, we observe an intense second plateau in the high harmonic spectrum in argon. At relatively high pressure, complex interplay between strongly time-dependent ionization processes and propagation effects leads to important spectral broadening without loss of spectral brightness. We show that the relevant parameter for this physical process is the product of laser peak power by gas pressure. We compare source performances with high harmonic generation using a gas jet in loose focusing geometry and conclude that the source developed is a good candidate for injection devices such as seeded soft x-ray lasers or free electron lasers in the soft x-ray range.

International audience; The wavefront of an injection-seeded soft x-ray laser beam generated by amplification of high-harmonic pulses in a lambda = 18.9 nm molybdenum plasma amplifier was measured by a Hartmann wavefront sensor with an accuracy of lambda/32 root mean square (rms). A significant improvement in wavefront aberrations of 0.51 +/- 0.03 lambda rms to 0.23 +/- 0.01 lambda rms was observed as a function of plasma column length. The variation of wavefront characteristic as a function time delay between the injection of the seed and peak of soft x-ray amplifier pump was studied. The measurements were used to reconstruct the soft x-ray source and confirm its high peak brightness. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

We report modulation bandwidth measurements on a number of InGaN-based quantum well LEDs emitting at 450 and 520 nm wavelengths. It is shown that for these devices the data can be interpreted in terms of Auger recombination, by taking account of the carrier density dependence of the radiative coefficient. We find values for the Auger coefficient of (1 +/- 0.3) x 10(-29) cm(6) s(-1) at 450 nm and (3 +/- 1) x 10(-30) cm(6) s(-1) at 520 nm. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. We report a thorough analysis of the spectral properties of an ytterbium-doped fibre amplifier, seeded by a Nd:YAG laser, whose linewidth has been narrowed down to 1 Hz by locking the laser to an ultrastable reference cavity. We measured the phase noise contribution from the amplifier, showing that it does not depend on the amplification gain, nor on the seed laser linewidth. Moreover, the amplifier-induced phase noise does not affect the final linewidth, as verified by heterodyne linewidth measurement within the 0.2 Hz resolution bandwidth of our acquisition set-up. Preservation of spectral purity below Hz-level is promising for more demanding applications, from nonlinear optics to frequency/time-standard transfer over fibre links. International audience; In this work, we report the experimental observation of supercontinua generation in two kinds of suspended-core microstructured soft-glass optical fibers. Low loss, highly nonlinear, tellurite and As2S3 chalcogenide fibers have been fabricated and pumped close to their zero-dispersion wavelength in the femtosecond regime by means of an optical parametric oscillator pumped by a Ti:Sapphire laser. When coupled into the fibers, the femtosecond pulses result in 2000-nm bandwidth supercontinua reaching the Mid-Infrared region and extending from 750 nm to 2.8 mu m in tellurite fibers and 1 mu m to 3.2 mu m in chalcogenide fibers, respectively.

International audience; The amplification of high-order harmonics (HOH) in a plasma-based amplifier is a multiscale, temporal phenomenon that couples plasma hydrodynamics, atomic processes, and HOH electromagnetic fields. We use a one-dimensional, time-dependent Maxwell-Bloch code to compare the natural amplification regime and another regime where plasma polarization is constantly forced by the HOH. In this regime, a 10-MW (i.e., 100 times higher than current seeded soft x-ray laser power), 1.5-mu J, 140-fs pulse free from the parasitic temporal structures appearing on the natural amplification regime can be obtained.

We report on the absolute frequency measurement of an extended-cavity diode laser stabilized against a Doppler-free vibration–rotation transition of the H2 18O isotopologue near 1.384 μm. Absolute determination is performed by comparing the water-stabilized laser frequency with respect to a GPS-disciplined Rb microwave standard by means of a self-referenced fiber-based optical frequency comb. The line center frequency of the 22,1→22,0 transition of the H2 18O ν1+ν3 combination band is found to be 216 519 045 955(13) kHz.

Monolithic integration of Al2O3:Er3+ amplifier technology with passive silicon-on-insulator waveguides is demonstrated. A signal enhancement of >7 dB at 1533 nm wavelength is obtained. The straightforward wafer-scale fabrication process, which includes reactive co-sputtering and subsequent reactive ion etching, allows for parallel integration of multiple amplifier and laser sections with silicon or other photonic circuits on a chip.

Organic photorefractive composites with sub-second response time and complete internal diffraction efficiency at low-intensity 1064 nm illumination are presented. Direct sensitization of the composites is provided by the C84 fullerene derivative [84]PCBM or the organic/inorganic hybrid Ni-dithiolene complex TT-2324. Holographic measurements on blends with varying contents of sensitizer are demonstrated.

Vertical arrays of sealed nanofluidic channels, in which both cross-sectional dimensions are controllable down to 10 nm, were fabricated by selective side etching of a SiGe heterostructure comprised of layers of alternating Ge fractions. Capillary filling of these nanochannel arrays with fluorescent dye solutions was investigated using a confocal microscope. The feasibility of using nanochannels for size-based separation of biomolecules was demonstrated by imaging aggregates of tagged amyloid-beta peptide. The ability to integrate a large number of nanochannels shows promise for high throughput applications involving lab-on-a-chip systems.

In this work a longitudinally pumped, widely tunable, solid state Yb:YLF laser was developed with special design for applications to optical frequency metrology, LIDAR measurements in the atmosphere and for absolute frequency stabilization The YLF crystalline host, combined with efficient diode pumping, allows for wide wavelength tunability at around 1.03 mu m. The novel laser source is being thoroughly characterized in terms of output power, spatial beam quality, single frequency output, and wavelength tunability.

Ultrafast extreme-ultraviolet pulses are spectrally selected by a time-delay-compensated grating monochromator. The intrinsic very short duration of the pulses is obtained by exploiting the high-order harmonic generation process. The temporal characterization of the harmonic pulses is obtained using a cross-correlation method: pulses as short as 8 fs are measured at the output of the monochromator in the case of the 23rd harmonic. This value is in agreement with the expected duration of such pulses, indicating that the influence of the monochromator is negligible. The photon flux has been measured with a calibrated photodiode, pointing out the good efficiency of the monachromator, derived by the exploitation for the two gratings of the conical diffraction mounting.

When external-cavity diode lasers are used in dimensional metrology via optical interferometry, parasitic modes and background radiation deserve careful investigation. This paper gives the relevant measurement equation and explicit formulae for the excess phase of travelling fringes. Particular emphasis is given to potential errors in the measurement of the Si lattice parameter by combined x-ray and optical interferometry.

The impact of high-k gate dielectrics on device short-channel and circuit performance of fin field-effect transistors is studied over a wide range of dielectric permittivities k. It is observed that there is a decrease in the parasitic outer fringe capacitance C-of in addition to an increase in the internal fringe capacitance C-if with high-k dielectrics, which degrades the short-channel effects significantly. It is shown that fin width scaling is the most suitable approach to recover the degradation in the device performance due to high-k integration. Furthermore, from the circuit perspective, for the 32-nm technology generation, the presence of an optimum k for a given target subthreshold leakage current has been identified by various possible approaches such as fin width scaling, fin-doping adjustment, and gate work function engineering.

International audience; Harmonic seeded operation of a neon-like titanium plasma-based soft x-ray laser is described. The plasma amplifier is pumped with a variation of the grazing incidence technique involving a fast and localized ionization step. We discuss its effect on gain dynamics by measuring the amplifying factor as a function of the delay between pump pulse and harmonic seed. Two different regimes are pointed out, following the pumping scheme used. For one of them, a delay in the gain generation compared with the pumping laser pulse is observed. Several Lu3+- and Y3+-based oxide and fluoride single crystals with isomorphic structures and doped with Ce3+ (or Pr3+) or codoped with Yb3+ ions have been grown and studied to show the beneficial effects of the Lu3+ and Yb3+ ions on their broad-band UV luminescence properties. Time-resolved color center absorption measurements clearly show the reduction of the usually observed UV laser pump-induced optical losses and thus confirm the previous gain and laser results obtained in these materials. Some preliminary interpretations of the involved mechanisms are advanced. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

International audience; This paper reviews the major accomplishments in the development of plasma-based soft X-ray lasers and their applications in 2012. Significant experimental breakthroughs include the extension of the lasing range down to 1.5 nm in an X-FEL photoionized plasma and the 100-Hz operation of a 18.9-nm laser with a record average power of 0.15 mW. New fields of applications, exploiting the high-brightness, coherence, and compactness of the source, were demonstrated. Further breakthroughs toward higher peak power are anticipated from numerical simulations of injection-seeded soft X-ray lasers.

In this work we show that junctionless nanowire transistor (JNT) exhibits lower degree of ballisticity in subthreshold and higher ballisticity above threshold compare to conventional inversion-mode transistors, according to quantum mechanical simulations. The lower degradation of the ballisticity above threshold region gives the JNT near-ballistic transport performance and hence a high current drive. On the other hand, lower ballisticity in subthreshold region helps reducing the off-current and improves the subthreshold slope. A three-dimensional quantum mechanical device simulator based on the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism in the uncoupled mode-space approach has been developed to extract the physical parameters of the devices. Wavelength conversion using an indium phosphide based microdisc laser (MDL) heterogeneously integrated on a silicon-on-insulator waveguide is reported. Several lasing modes are present within the disc cavity, between which wavelength conversion can be performed by mode switching and spectral filtering. For the first time, low-power wavelength up- and downconversion using one single MDL is demonstrated. Operation with a bit error rate below 10(-9) at 2.5 Gbit/s and operation below the forward-error-correction limit of 10(-3) at 10 Gbit/s are shown without the use of additional seeding beams.

When femtosecond (fs) laser pulses irradiate hydrocarbon molecules, then many fragmentation channels evident in nanosecond irradiation are bypassed, providing a strong analytically useful parent ion, However a number of molecules show only a very small or indeed no parent ions and recent papers suggest that those that do not produce parent peaks have cation transitions in resonance with the femtosecond laser wavelength. This Letter shows that this resonance effect is not universal and some aromatic molecules not only show strong parent peaks but also doubly and triply ionised entities when their cation absorption spectrum is strongly resonant at either the 800 or 400 nm or indeed both. The theoretical and experimental characterisation of high power, coherent laser arrays are presented. Optical output powers in excess of 2.8W/facet are achieved in a nearly-diffraction-limited beam, measured without lenses, corresponding to 275MWcm(-2) srad(-1) brightness. The ablation of solid tin surfaces by an 800-nanometer-wavelength laser is studied for a pulse length range from 500 fs to 4.5 ps and a fluence range spanning 0.9 to 22 J/cm^2. The ablation depth and volume are obtained employing a high-numerical-aperture optical microscope, while the ion yield and energy distributions are obtained from a set of Faraday cups set up under various angles. We found a slight increase of the ion yield for an increasing pulse length, while the ablation depth is slightly decreasing. The ablation volume remained constant as a function of pulse length. The ablation depth follows a two-region logarithmic dependence on the fluence, in agreement with the available literature and theory. In the examined fluence range, the ion yield angular distribution is sharply peaked along the target normal at low fluences but rapidly broadens with increasing fluence. The total ionization fraction increases monotonically with fluence to a 5-6% maximum, which is substantially lower than the typical ionization fractions obtained with nanosecond-pulse ablation. The angular distribution of the ions does not depend on the laser pulse length within the measurement uncertainty. These results are of particular interest for the possible utilization of fs-ps laser systems in plasma sources of extreme ultraviolet light for nanolithography., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

International audience; We perform wavefront measurements of high-order harmonics using an extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) Hartmann sensor and study how their spatial properties vary with different generation parameters, such as pressure in the nonlinear medium, fundamental pulse energy and duration as well as beam size. In some conditions, excellent wavefront quality (up to lambda/11) was obtained. The high throughput of the intense XUV beamline at the Lund Laser Centre allows us to perform single-shot measurements of both the full harmonic beam generated in argon and individual harmonics selected by multilayer mirrors. We theoretically analyze the relationship between the spatial properties of the fundamental and those of the generated high-order harmonics, thus gaining insight into the fundamental mechanisms involved in high-order harmonic generation (HHG).
