BRITISH politics & government, 1964-1979 - Abstract
In this article the author discusses the state of Great Britain in early 1979, a period known informally as "The Winter of Discontent." A number of aspects of the time are discussed including the ineffective governing of prime minister James Callaghan, labor union strife and significant inflation. The author claims that the difficulties of 1979 caused the downfall of the Labour Party and assured an electoral victory for the Conservative Party under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher.
