The Edwardian era saw the final flowering of the partisan provincial press. In the decade before 1914, most of the major newspapers published outside London still displayed a clear party allegiance and collectively they outsold their London rivals. Some of the most important figures in the provincial press on the Liberal side were the cocoa manufacturer and philanthropist, Joseph Rowntree, and the associated trio, often known as the “Starmer group”, of Arnold Rowntree (Joseph's nephew), John Bowes Morrell (his business partner) and the newspaperman, Charles Starmer. Between them they rescued several important Liberal newspapers like the Northern Echo and Sheffield Independent for the party cause. But one of the group's lesser-known acquisitions, and its last before the First World War, was the Lincolnshire Chronicle in June 1914. This article argues that the Lincolnshire Chronicle 's purchase can best be seen as a purely commercial investment by the “Starmer group” and that this may indicate that the group was starting to become more interested in the press as a business, rather than as a political project. The article also examines how the layout and content of the Lincolnshire Chronicle were changed under its new owners in order to increase its profitability, often using methods pioneered elsewhere in the “Starmer group”, and resulting in a more standardised, “modern” format. In doing so, the article draws attention to the complexities of the interaction between power and profit in the Edwardian press and suggests the Lincolnshire Chronicle can be seen as a harbinger of the commercial, rather than political, future that lay before provincial newspaper groups in the post-First World War era. The title of this paper refers to both the personality and work of the Spaniards who, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, had to abandon their homeland fleeing from the absolutism of King Ferdinand VII (1784–1833), and the inhabitants of the Spanish colonies in the New World, the forerunners of the struggles for independence in their respective countries. Both ended up settling in London, a city that served not only as a refuge but also as a place from which to disseminate their slogans in favour of freedom. Three areas are discussed: the publications of liberal Spanish exiles in London in the early nineteenth century, the interaction between Spanish and (Latin) American exiles and the role of women in this endeavour and in the cause of liberalism in general. The London press shaped this exile journalism and the subsequent liberal journalism in Spain when the extreme censorship from which these exiled journalists had fled was finally lifted. We believe that this global approach offers an original perspective from which to highlight the role of women, with a view to filling the traditional historiographical lacuna in this regard. The article reports on the Third Annual Doctoral Symposium on Arab & Muslim Media Research of the Centre for Arab and Muslim Media Research (CAMMRO) held at the University of London in London, England on April 25, 2009. It describes the speeches of Dr. Makram KhouryMachool of the University of Hertfordshire, the journalist M. Said Mahfouz, and researcher Sarah Jurkiewicz. Among the topics of the papers presented were the role of digital technology in war and the press reports about war.

The development of newspapers neither introduced nor replaced organised news dissemination. News usually went slower by the printed newspaper than by word of mouth and by written newsletters, until the telegraph. Initially, newspapers were more a printer's than a writer's project and consequently almost two and a half centuries elapsed before the newsroom became an integrated part of the newspaper house. In the meantime newsgathering and content providers were organised outside the print shop. The systems for production and content were occasionally integrated when an extended circle of owners met to plan the next issues of a journal or a newspaper. This article compares some features of these developments in London during the eighteenth century and in the Scandinavian capitals in the nineteenth century. London was far ahead of the Scandinavian capitals in the size and sophistication of text production during the eighteenth century. The article focuses on the history of advertising in newspapers in London, England between 1650 and 1750. It may be approached from at least three directions. First, there is the history of advertising per se; in this respect subsequent general histories have made little advance on Henry Sampson's pioneering work published almost a century ago. Blanche B. Elliott in A History of English Advertising has covered fresh ground in her examination of the advertisement sheets in the late seventeenth century, but has barely touched upon the much larger subject of advertising in newspapers proper during the period under review. The historians have concentrated somewhat superficially on the evident humor, quaintness, and evocativeness of many of the advertisements and have almost entirely neglected any quantitative analysis. Secondly, advertising may be considered as part of the history of journalism, a legitimate approach when one appreciates that by 1750, 75% of space in some dailies was being devoted to advertisements. Thirdly, the advertisements may be studied as a source for literary, economic, and social history.

When George Orwell was appointed literary editor of London's Tribune magazine in late 1943 he was a financially unsuccessful author. Encouraged by his new position, he engaged in a campaign of journalistic persuasion. The campaign started by seeking to persuade the public to purchase more books. His initial enthusiasm was replaced by a despairing realization that the public's purchases were less than he suspected and that his campaign was unlikely to change the situation. His journalism then changed in a subtle way. On the surface he asked the public to admit their preference for movies, dog racing, and socialized alcohol consumption. But at a deeper level, Orwell's weekly columns were an effort in self-persuasion. Ironically, as his editorial campaign failed to persuade people to buy more books, his efforts to find a larger market for his own books started to succeed. This article presents an abstract of the paper The British Working-Class Press in 186. This paper dealt mainly with five weekly journals, all published in London, England. It included Bee-Hive, Commonwealth, Working Man, International Courier and National Reformer. The Bee-Hive, owned by the Trades Newspaper Co., was still primarily a trade union newspaper; but concerned with working-class political activities. George Potter was manager, and Robert Hartwell was the editor. Due to a dispute with the Junta, the Bee-Hive had been ex-communicated by the London Trades Council. The Commonwealth was owned by the Industrial Newspaper Co. Set up in 1865 when Marx and the Junta gave up hope of gaining control of the Bee-Hive, the paper took over the Miner and Workman's Advocate, and re-launched it as the organ of the International. The title was changed to Commonwealth in February 1866, when a group of middle-class Reformers became shareholders. As a result of their influence, policies were moderated, and by the beginning of 1867, the Commonwealth was mainly a mouthpiece for the Reform League. The Working Man and the International Courier were companion-papers, with Joseph Collet as editor-proprietor. The Working Man was the organ of the 0'Brienite National Reform League; the International Courier became the organ of the International in 1867. The National Reformer--Secular Advocate and Freethought Journal--was by 1867 owned as well as edited by Charles Bradlaugh; and it was regarded by him as an organ of the Reform League.

This article examines how "pioneer journalists" (Hepp & Loosen, 2020) in legacy newsrooms create preferred audience experiences through their UX practices in a networked media ecosystem where journalism's epistemic authority is increasingly contested. Grounded in the encoding/decoding paradigm (Hall, 1973, 1980), this study combines semi-structured interviews with 12 journalism pioneers in London-based legacy newsrooms, with the in-depth analysis of the multimodal/interactivity features of two example stories. The findings suggest that audiences are interpellated through the construction of various repertoires of agency, grounded in empathy, for a closer, more immediate, and active involvement in the story. By creating 'relational UXs' that try to control the travel of meanings and the production of emotions, pioneers in legacy news organisations place a stronger emphasis on the relational renegotiation of epistemic authority, a strategy to simultaneously embrace active audiences and sustain journalism's traditional raison d'etre - making sense of the world for the public. From the mid-2000s, a sudden surge in the use of mobile phone footage by national and international broadcasters was widely anticipated as the precursor to a revolutionary change in the generation and dissemination of news. In the wake of events such as the London bombings of 2005, user-generated content bureaux and hubs were established by major media organizations from the British Broadcasting Corporation and CNN to Al Jazeera while new software and hardware was developed. The potential for covering virtually any news development from at least one of the world's seven billion mobile phones suggested a whole new phase of broadcast journalism was imminent. This study of news bulletins by three United Kingdom-based broadcasters – Channel 4, the BBC and ITV – establishes a new methodology for the identification of mobile phone content in broadcasting. This article challenges the widespread idea that, in an age of instantaneous and ubiquitously accessible information, foreign correspondents are doomed to disappear. The last study of foreign correspondents in the London hub was conducted 30 years ago. Based on a new study involving a range of in-depth interviews with foreign correspondents in the British capital, the article reveals the “story behind their stories” and the changes that have occurred since then. It particularly focuses on the impact that advances in communication technologies have had on the correspondents’ professional identity, newsgathering routines, and news outputs. The findings contribute to a more nuanced and empirical understanding of the impact of media globalization on the practice of journalism. They underline the increasingly important role of foreign correspondents as “sense makers” within the huge tide of information available. While foreign journalists have to a large extent always fulfilled this function, they appear more needed than ever in a deeply interdependent world. Foreign correspondents are also developing novel ways of reporting. Indeed, rather than a “crisis” of foreign correspondence, we could perhaps be witnessing its renaissance. The success of William Thackeray's shilling monthly periodical, The Cornhill Magazine, which first appeared in 1859, spawned a series of imitators in the 1860s with titles drawn from London landmarks. Temple Bar, St Paul's, Belgravia and St James's all attempted to court the same metropolitan middle-class family readership that Thackeray had enjoyed with his inclusion of apolitical and non-controversial articles, serialized novels, and poetry. The editor of Temple Bar, George Augustus Sala — one of Dickens's 'Young Men' — promised in the prospectus that his periodical would be 'full of solid yet entertaining matter, that shall be interesting to Englishmen and Englishwomen...and that Filia-familias may read with as much gratification as Pater or Mater-familias'. But, paradoxically, Sala decided to surround himself with a team of contributors hand-picked from his own bohemian circle, London journalists whose political and social outlook were at odds with those of a family readership. This article will argue that Sala, along with sub-editor Edmund Yates and publisher John Maxwell, deliberately and cynically packed the first edition of Temple Bar with material designed to ensnare a 'respectable' middle-class family readership. With selective anonymity and a serialized novel later described by Yates as 'Trollope-and-milk', along with articles of a conservative and London-centric nature, 30,000 copies of the first edition were sold. Once this readership had been established, the editorial team began to introduce content of a more liberal nature. Serialized sensation novels, such as Sala's Seven Sons Of Mammon and Mary Braddon's Aurora Floyd, attacked the dominance of the domestic realist novel, while hard-hitting articles and poems alerted readers to the misery and poverty to be found on the streets of London. Sala slowly created a periodical that, for a time at least, was the most unconventional of the shilling monthlies. This article will reveal the difficulties and subtleties involved in creating a brand personality for a monthly periodical, and by doing so will highlight the complex relationships that existed between nineteenth-century London journalists. This article offers information on the travel of American journalist Nathaniel Parker Willis in London, England to be acquainted with the Countess of Blessington. It states that the description of the first encounter between Willis and Blessington appeared in the "New York Mirror" in March 1835. In addition, it served to stage his supposed intimacy with British patrician mores for wider American readership. Furthermore, Willis captures the atmosphere combining with Blessington as a woman of letters.

This article offers evidence for an alternative perspective on the media effects debate. Early work on media influence, be it conservative or critical, assumed a causal link between mass media and mass behaviour. In contrast, decades of effects and audience research has established the inadequacy of this ‘strong effects’ paradigm. The main thrust of this counter-research is the realization that audiences actively consume and use the media for self-serving purposes. The alternative perspective offered here comes from a study of elite fund managers, their communications and decision-making in the London Stock Exchange. The research findings suggest that such individuals do respond actively to media, but, collectively, the results can be both self-defeating and on a mass scale. That is, individuals do not have to be ignorant nor act irrationally to contribute to media- instigated, collective irrationality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
