Background: New intensive care unit (ICU) nurses often experience stress because of concerns about potentially harming their patients in a work environment that demands the rapid development of several skills in a limited training period. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the prioritisation of educational needs within adult ICUs, focusing on how new nurses evaluate their current knowledge and perceive the most critical competencies. Study Design: A cross‐sectional study was conducted among a convenience sample of 102 new ICU nurses in general and tertiary hospitals in South Korea. Educational needs were assessed using a structured questionnaire for new ICU nurses. This study investigated educational needs using paired t‐tests, Borich's assessment model and the Locus for Focus model. Results: Only 48% of participants were satisfied with their education. The highest‐rated educational content included preparing to use a defibrillator (95% CI = 2.44–3.28, p <.001), administering emergency drugs for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (95% CI = 2.09–2.91, p <.001), starting and maintaining continuous renal replacement therapy (95% CI = 1.50–2.42, p <.001), applying and maintaining a ventilator (95% CI = 1.42–2.08, p <.001), preparing for intubation (95% CI = 1.23–1.97, p <.001), reporting to the emergency team, preparing equipment for CPR (95% CI = 1.12–1.94, p <.001) and drug calculation (95% CI = 0.87–1.53, p <.001). Conclusions: These findings indicate that educational programmes for new ICU nurses should be developed considering the aforementioned priorities. Furthermore, nurse educators should adopt a practical and active instructional method to repeatedly clarify content, prioritising the improvement of knowledge and performance of new ICU nurses. Relevance to Clinical Practice: This study guides clinical educators and managers in focusing on areas where new ICU nurses need additional training. Background: Competency in infection control is crucial for implementing nursing best practices to ensure patient safety. However, research is lacking on the infection control education received by nursing students prior to entering clinical settings as nurses. This study aimed to explore how nursing students conceptualize infection control care in undergraduate nursing programs. Methods: This study employed a qualitative research method using phenomenography. Universities providing undergraduate nursing programs in Korea. Thirty nursing students: 10 students each from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of five undergraduate programs. Data were collected from May 2019 to February 2020 through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a phenomenographic analysis procedure. Results: Six descriptive categories were derived inductively for nursing students' frames of reference regarding infection control care and six descriptive categories of how nursing students learned about infection control care. The structural framework of the identified categories, about how nursing students learn about infection control care, was presented as an outcome space. Conclusions: Given that nursing students demonstrate diverse conceptualizations of infection control and are at varying levels of learning, professors and clinical mentors need to develop theoretical education and clinical practice opportunities that consider these differences. Background: Conceptual understanding of the perceptions that wound care nurses use to determine how to manage pressure injuries may provide information for improving their pressure injury care competency. The aim of this study is to explore and describe the way wound care nurses experience and perceive pressure injury management. Methods: A qualitative, phenomenographic approach, a method designed to explore the different ways in which people comprehend a phenomenon and develop a practical knowledge-based framework, was used in this study. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection with twenty wound care nurses. All participants were female with a mean age of 38.0, mean total clinical experience of 15.2 years and mean clinical experience as wound care nurse of 7.7 years. The eight steps of qualitative data analysis for a phenomenographic study were employed to develop an understanding of participants' experience of pressure injury management. Results: The analysis resulted in an assessment domain and an intervention domain, each containing three descriptive categories based on five identified conceptions. The categories were as follows: "comparison", "consideration", and "monitoring" in assessment, and "creation", "conversation" and "judgement" in intervention. Conclusions: This study has created a framework for understanding pressure injury management based on practical knowledge. This framework of the nurses' pressure injury care reflected the need for an awareness of a harmonious approach to patients and wounds. There is a pattern of transcending a reliance on only theoretical knowledge, and this key factor in the framework should be considered when developing education programs and tools for improving nurse pressure injury care competency and patient safety. Educating interprofessional practitioners in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) is critical for managing discomfort of residents with dementia, which is often unnoticed and undertreated. A framework of education on discomfort management that is applicable in various environments in different facilities is necessary. We developed a preliminary framework to educate interprofessional practitioners on discomfort management of dementia residents in LTCFs. We conducted a three-step research process: a literature review using topic modeling, in-depth interviews, and Delphi surveys. We derived four categories for an interprofessional approach toward discomfort management education in LTCFs: identifying visual and nonvisual signs to communicate among professionals, close observation using comparison and contrast to share information for discomfort care, harmony in interprofessional roles, and applying common and specific professional knowledge for discomfort management. The findings provide the first outline for an educational framework for interprofessional discomfort management in LTCFs for residents with dementia. Communication breakdowns during emergencies threaten patient safety. In nursing homes (NHs) vulnerable residents may experience emergencies at any time. Concerns over clinical complexity and diverse communication styles among interprofessional practitioners heighten the need for standardized methods to improve practitioners' communication skills. This study explores communication structures among 32 practitioners in four NHs using in-depth interviews following a formalized Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation (SBAR) framework. Network analysis, a deductive approach to qualitative data analysis, and case analysis were performed for a comprehensive understanding of interprofessional communication in 48 emergency cases identified during interviews. Findings identified the flow of information, messaging, and management strategies that were expected of receivers during interprofessional communication. These results could help develop training regimens or guidelines to improve cooperative interprofessional communication, allowing practitioners to provide appropriate emergency care for NH residents. Due to the global aging trend, the number of older people who will spend the last years of their lives in nursing homes is increasing. However, nursing homes have long confronted negative social and public discourses, including stigmas on dementia and life in such facilities. Nevertheless, the remaining time of residents with dementia holds significance, for them and their families, as they seek respect and the ability to make meaningful end-of-life decisions. To explore how nursing home nurses advocate for the remaining lifetimes of residents with dementia. A qualitative research design. Four nursing homes in Korea from January 2023 to February 2023. Twenty nurses who provide direct caregiving for residents with dementia and have a minimum of two years' experience in nursing homes were recruited. This study employed a critical discourse analysis. Twenty interviews conducted with nursing home nurses were examined to explore the connections between the grammatical and lexical aspects of the language used by the nurses to construct their identities as advocates for residents with dementia and the broader sociocultural context. Four discourses regarding nursing home nurses advocating for the value of life of residents with dementia were identified: (1) Bridging perspectives: I am a negotiator between medical treatment and residents' families with differing views; (2) Embracing a shared humanity: Residents are no different from me; they just need professional help; (3) Affirming belongingness: Residents still belong to their families, even when care has been delegated; and (4) Empowering voices for change: We are struggling to provide better care in a challenging reality. This paper highlights the importance of nursing advocacy in safeguarding the remaining time and dignity of individuals with dementia, challenging the stigma surrounding dementia and nursing homes and calling for greater societal and political recognition of the efforts nurses make to preserve the personhood and well-being of these older adults. Background: The resilience of nursing home (NH) nursing staff is emphasized to improve the quality of care provided, but the concept has not been clearly defined. By composing such a definition through concept development, a basis for active research in the future can be established. Aim: To identify the definition and conceptual characteristics of the concept of resilience of NH nursing staffs. Method: In this study, the concept was developed using Schwartz-Barcott and Kim's hybrid model, which included theoretical, fieldwork, and final analysis stages. In the theoretical stage, a literature review on the definition and measurement of concepts was performed. For the fieldwork stage, 22 interviews were conducted with 7 participants, and a content analysis was performed. During the final analysis stage, the results of the theoretical and field work stages were integrated. Results: Three dimensions, eight attributes, and three types were identified. The three dimensions are internal resources, external support, and positive coping with situations as they arise; the eight attributes are optimism, patience, mindfulness, supportive relationships, available resources, work-life boundary setting, self-development, and growth; and the three types are those who want to adapt themselves to the situation, those who actively seek to cope with stressful situations, and those who hold positive expectations for the future. Conclusion: Coping with difficult situations using internal resources and external support was a unique trait revealed in the resilience of NH nursing staff members. Background: Palliative wound care is important for stability in terminal care. It addresses both the physical and psychological needs of patients and facilitates other aspects of terminal care. Appropriate competencies of nurses regarding palliative wound care can improve patient outcomes and raise their quality of life. The purpose of this study was to identify how wound care nurses structure the subjective frames regarding palliative wound care. Method: This study utilized Q-methodology to analyze their subjective viewpoints. Forty nurses experienced in palliative wound care were asked to completely classify 35 Q-statements into a normal distribution shape. The PQ-Method program was used to conduct principal factor analysis and varimax rotation for data analysis. Results: This study revealed 4 Q-factors of palliative wound care: "Focusing on care within the boundary of current patient demands," "Comparing continuously the priorities on wound healing and disease care," "Preparing and preventing from worsening via tracking care in advance," and "Moving forward with a clear direction by confronting the declining condition." Conclusion: We hope that the results of this study are used in the development of nursing education that reflects professional perspectives of palliative wound care, thus helping to improve nursing competencies in palliative care. Emergencies can negatively affect the morbidity and mortality of nursing home residents. As nurses employed at nursing homes play a key role in such situations, their conceptualizations of emergency management should be considered to improve care. Accordingly, this study aimed to identify nurses' conceptualizations of managing emergencies in nursing homes. A qualitative research design was conducted using interviews with 20 nurses working in five different nursing homes in the Republic of Korea between September 2019 and August 2020. The data were analyzed using phenomenography. This study identified two main perspectives used by nurses in nursing homes to manage emergencies, depending on the resident's condition: emergency care and daily preventive care. Nurses' conceptualizations of care provided in emergencies were organized under the frames of assessment and intervention, whereas routine care carried out during daily life activities fell under the frame of prevention. Although surgical team members are exposed to surgical smoke, most do not fully recognize the hazards of such exposure during surgery. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of surgical smoke and its countermeasures in the operating room, specifically among nurses who have been exposed to surgical smoke for a long time. This was a mixed‐methods study involving focus groups and a descriptive survey. The focus group revealed that nurses believed harmful substances accumulating in the body were proportional to the years worked, and many were unaware of the existent hazards in their work environment. They encouraged the formulation of self‐protection measures and perceived that the recognition of rules and collaboration should take precedence among potential countermeasures. Our survey showed that properly wearing personal protective equipment and being educated on surgical smoke hazards were identified as essential coping methods for nurses. These findings will help create awareness regarding surgical smoke hazards in operating rooms. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to clarify the concept of discomfort identification by concept development in the nursing home. METHODS: The Schwartz–Barcott and Kim's hybrid model was used. FINDINGS: The identification of discomfort can be explained as an interactive and confirmative process of sympathetically responding to patients with dementia's problem behavior expressions that communicate unmet needs. CONCLUSIONS: The identification of discomfort has the potential to improve the detection of multidimensional discomfort related to nursing diagnosis as a holistic and patient‐centered approach. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The findings could help nursing home nurses have a better understanding of identification of discomfort and can improve nurses and interdisciplinary caregivers' knowledge for developing appropriate comfort caring activities. Introduction: This study aims to explore how older people structure the subjectivity that accompanies the development of gerotranscendence in late adulthood within a specific sociocultural context. Method: Q methodology, a common method for assessing subjectivity, was applied. Results: The four subjective frames of reference that accompany the development of gerotranscendence, represented by four corresponding Q-factors, were (a) generation awareness, (b) awareness of aging, (c) awareness of the big picture of life, and (d) awareness of temporality. Discussion: The subjective frames of reference that characterize the development of gerotranscendence in late adulthood are closely related to cultural and psychosocial environmental influences over the course of an individual's life. This qualitative study aims to explore practitioners' (nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, and occupational therapists) conceptualizations of function‐focused care for nursing home residents. Between September 2017 and February 2018, we collected data from 18 participants in five nursing homes using semi‐structured interviews. We then performed phenomenographic data and content analyses. Five categories were identified in the assessment domain: "functional limitation associated with physical condition," "functional limitation associated with cognitive condition," "change from baseline function," "ability to cooperate with caregivers to improve function," and "motivation to improve function." Five categories were identified in the intervention domain: "minimizing damage," "strengthening physical resources," "repetitive musculoskeletal strengthening," "stimulating motivation for self‐care," and "planning enhancement of function through emotional stability." Our findings may contribute to improving understanding of actual practice and provide an important starting point for developing knowledge about how function‐focused care is performed in nursing homes. The number of elderly suffering from dementia and complex disabilities is gradually increasing in nursing homes, and they form a differentiated group that requires palliative care provided by practitioners in various disciplines from the time of their admission to improve the quality of their remaining lives. The purpose of this study was to explore an interdisciplinary care approach by nurses and related practitioners for the demented and complex-disabled elderly in nursing homes that focuses on palliative care based on an ethical point of view. A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted through in-depth interviews of 29 interdisciplinary practitioners working at 5 nursing homes. From them, 3 themes and 9 subthemes were extracted as the key results. First, practitioners set up cooperative care plans based on constantly tracking down clues to gradual functional deteriorations. Second, practitioners establish a cooperative committee to link residents and practitioners for responding to the subtle expressions of the elderly. Finally, practitioners maximize the opportunities for improving the quality of the elderly's remaining lives. These results can be the basis for the first prototype in developing interdisciplinary practical guidelines for nursing home–specific palliative care and can provide new insights for the practical care concept of palliative care. Introduction: Researchers explored the meanings of "eating" for obese children from socioeconomically disadvantaged families and identified multilevel factors and strategies for their healthy eating based on ecological perspectives. Methodology: Grounded on a qualitative research design, focus group interviews were conducted with each group of key stakeholders: obese children, their mothers, and social workers from public welfare systems in South Korea. Results: "Eating" and "healthy eating" were defined as "fulfilling deprivations" and "integrating balance into their lives," respectively. Eight factors and four strategies for their healthy eating were identified at intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, and community/political levels. Discussion: These findings may help nurses in Western culture understand the cultural context of obese children's eating embedded in socioeconomically disadvantaged families and public welfare systems in Asian culture. Purpose: In rapidly aging societies, preserving residents’remaining functional ability (RFA) has been emphasized in nursing home (NH) care. Assessing residents’remaining function is necessary for the planning of this process. This study was done to develop and test categorizing a tool by which the RFA of nursing home residents can be assessed in order to better address their care needs and to support nurses’ practice. Methods: This study was conducted in three stages: in-depth interviews with NH nurses to develop a conceptual framework for categorizing the RFA, construction of preliminary items for the categorizing tool, and then testing the tool’s validity and reliability. One hundred ninety-seven residents from ten NHs representing Korea nationwide participated. Results: The RFA of the NH residents was classified as two dimensions: physical and cognitive function. Fifteen items were developed to categorize the tool for RFA. Correlations with long-term care levels and long term care assessment scores supported the scale's criterion validity. Reliability (Cronbach's ⍺, test-retest and inter-rater reliability) was acceptable. Conclusion: This tool can be used to promote effective nursing care by improving the RFA of NH residents. Abstract: Aim: Despite its high prevalence and seriousness, delirium has been underrecognized by nurses. One reason is that the original characteristics of delirium are relatively unspecific and phenomenologically diverse, which makes a nurse's subjective decision more important in delirium detection. This study aims to identify the experiences, practices, and viewpoints of nurses in recognizing delirium in the elderly. Methods: In this study, Q‐methodology, which is a method for analyzing subjectivity, was used. Following the steps of Q‐methodology, 32 nurses with experiences in caring for the delirious elderly sorted 34 Q‐statements into the shape of a normal distribution. A centroid factor analysis and varimax rotation using the PQMethod program were conducted. Results: This study revealed four factors regarding nurses toward delirium recognition in the elderly. They were: Factor I, prediction from the integrated signs; Factor II, visible symptom‐centered detection; Factor III, the detection of abnormal changes based on concentrated observation; and Factor IV, identification by relying on the diagnostic data. Conclusion: The result of the study can help to understand elderly delirium detection more practically from a nurse's point of view. Aim The bedridden elderly with moderate-to-severe dementia account for a large proportion of the residents in nursing homes and form a specialized group requiring customized care in order to encourage their remaining functions, which determine the quality of their residual life. The purpose of this study was to search for ways to invigorate and foster the remaining functions of this complex-disability group, based on practical nursing strategies in nursing homes. Methods The qualitative thematic analysis was done by conducting in-depth interviews with 29 nurses working at 11 different nursing homes in South Korea. Results This study proposed four main themes and 19 sub themes as keys for providing specialized nursing care to the elderly with physical and cognitive disabilities. The main themes encourage the residents' remaining functions: (i) accurate identification of an elderly resident's physical, cognitive, and behavioral baseline is necessary in order to determine their functional levels; (ii) nurses provide meticulous management to support the remaining functions in order to prevent further deterioration; (iii) optimized know-how, based on accumulated experience and knowledge, is reflected in nursing strategies that maximize the effects of nursing interventions; and (iv) steady compliance with nursing guidelines and standards in nursing homes creates the best therapeutic environment and brings unexpected positive changes in the elderly's status. Conclusion A practical nursing strategy to target the group with a demented and complex disability in nursing homes was developed through thematic analysis of the empirical knowledge of nurses. ABSTRACT Background With ageing, older people face cardiovascular problems as the major cause of disability and death. Although immediate medical attention is a major factor in determining outcomes of cardiac problems, lack of personnel (i.e. registered nurse, certified nursing assistant and home care aide) in nursing homes without residing doctor limits the awareness of such problems, thus making it difficult to initiate timely and appropriate intervention. Aim The aim of this study was to conceptualize critical care for nursing home residents with cardiac vulnerability and develop practical knowledge in nursing practice. Methods Conventional content analysis was performed on date from interviews with 30 nurses from 10 nursing homes in South Korea between July and November 2010. Results The analysis revealed three major cardiac problems resulting from residents' cardiac vulnerability: angina, myocardial infarction (MI) and cardiogenic shock. Through content analysis, we extracted 6 themes and 21 subthemes for nurses' conceptualization of critical care for nursing home residents with cardiac vulnerability. In nursing homes without a residing doctor, nurses assessed the physical, functional and cognitive conditions along with the responses and symptoms of residents when emergency situations related to the cardiac problems occurred. Moreover, with a lack of infrastructures of a hospital, nurses provided critical care to the elderly by using personal practice strategies based on their personal experience in facilities along with practical knowledge of nurses while following the management principles of emergencies. Conclusions and relevance to clinical practice We found that nurses conceptualized critical nursing care for cardiac problems at nursing homes, which are different from those of general hospitals. Aims and objectives This study was conducted to clarify and conceptualise nurses' clinical decision-making for preserving the remaining abilities of nursing home residents suffering from physical-cognitive functional decline. Background Older adults experience physical, psychological and social changes, but their remaining abilities differ across individuals. Design This study used a qualitative research to gain a deeper understanding of nursing homes nurses' clinical decision-making. Methods In-depth interviews with 32 experienced nurses were undertaken. The data were analysed using conventional content analysis. Results Six categories and 58 subcategories of nursing practice related to managing the remaining abilities of residents with physical-cognitive functional decline were generated. The results of this study revealed five themes: (1) seeing residents' potential, (2) physical, emotional and psychosocial care in daily routines, (3) keeping personalised charts, (4) encouraging, promoting and physical and emotional support and (5) preparing residents for more independent living. The results were categorised into nurses' personal strategies based on their experience, practical nursing knowledge, nursing interventions and nursing evaluation criteria. Conclusions The themes reflected positive views on the residents' functional abilities and the nursing homes nurses' perception that their goal was to help residents achieve their highest level of independence. Relevance to clinical practice Preserving nursing home residents' remaining abilities represents nurses' optimistic view of residents' functional status. Routine care tailored for preserving the remaining abilities of individual nursing home residents with physical-cognitive functional decline is needed. Preserving the remaining abilities of nursing home resident is supported by therapeutic interactions including close contact as well as physical and emotional support. Background: The number of older people admitted to nursing homes has continued to rise with the recent expansion of the Republic of Korea's long-term care system. Maintaining ego integrity is a major task for older people approaching the end of life. As efforts to maintain ego integrity include the final stages of life, this concept is critically important for older people in nursing homes. This study was designed to assess issues related to ego integrity in the nursing home environment to determine how nurses should play a key role in managing this important life task. Purpose: The management by nurses of the ego integrity of residents of nursing homes is a new phenomenon that is central to promoting long-term, quality care. This study was designed to clarify and conceptualize this management phenomenon in the context of nursing homes. Methods: A hybrid model of concept development was used to analyze the ways in which nurses manage the ego integrity of residents of nursing homes. In the theoretical phase, a working definition of the management by nurses of residents' ego integrity is developed using a literature review. In the fieldwork phase, in-depth interviews are conducted with eight nurses from six nursing homes in Seoul and three other provinces. Finally, in the final analytical phase, the theoretical and fieldwork findings are interpreted and compared. Results: Two components, assessment and intervention, of the approach by nurses to managing the ego integrity of residents of nursing homes were identified. Assessment incorporates 10 attributes in the following three dimensions: "identifying the extent to which residents' basic needs are being fulfilled," "determining how residents achieve friendly relationships with others," and "determining how each resident creates a harmonious view of his or her life." Intervention incorporates nine attributes in the following two dimensions: "helping residents develop a positive view of life" and "helping residents make the best use of their remaining functional abilities." Conclusions/Implications for Practice: By managing the ego integrity of residents, nurses have a significant influence on residents' sociopsychological adaptation, especially in the challenging environment of a nursing home. This study supports that managing the ego integrity of residents of nursing homes is an important and practical component of the role played by nurses and of the aid and care they provide. Aim To discover the structure of the frames of reference for nursing home staff members' subjective judgment of residents' achievement of ego integrity. Methods Q-methodology was applied. Twenty-eight staff members who were working in a nursing home sorted 34 Q-statements into the shape of a normal distribution. Results A centroid factor analysis and varimax rotation, using the PQ-method program, revealed four factors: identifying clues to residents' positive acceptance of their whole life span, identifying residents' ways of enjoying their current life, referencing residents' attitudes and competencies toward harmonious relationships, and identifying residents' integrated efforts to establish self-esteem. Conclusion These subjective frames of reference need to be investigated in order to improve the relationships with nursing home residents and their quality of life. The aim of this study was to develop a patient on hemodialysis resilience scale and to verify validity and reliability. This patient on hemodialysis resilience scale (PHRS) was developed according to the scale development process by DeVellis (2017). Thirty-one publications on the subject were reviewed, and in-depth interviews with seven patients on hemodialysis were conducted. Items comprising the scale were reviewed and modified through evaluation by a panel of experts and face validity. This study was conducted to clarify and conceptualize the phenomenon of the resilience of patients on hemodialysis. Three phases of a hybrid model were applied. In the theoretical phase, a working definition of the resilience of patients on hemodialysis was developed via literature review. In the fieldwork phase, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 patients. Qualitative data from the interviews were analyzed to find attributes of resilience for patients on hemodialysis. The final analytical phase interpreted and compared findings of the theoretical and fieldwork phases. The concept of the resilience of patients on hemodialysis was as a complex phenomenon possessing several dimensions and attributes, delineating how patients on hemodialysis perceive and overcome hemodialysis. This study explored subjectivity frames of reference of resilience of patients on hemodialysis by using Q methodology. Participants included 35 patients on hemodialysis. Data were obtained from October to December 2016 and were analyzed by the PQ method. Five factors were identified: 1) finding the value of life by focusing on the meaning of a new life through hemodialysis, 2) compromising actively with the situation of hemodialysis, 3) internalizing sadness and emphasizing the meaning of life itself, 4) finding a support system to help overcome hemodialysis, and 5) building the will to live by getting strength from family. The common theme of the five factors was overcoming hemodialysis and moving forward with their lives. This study can help nurses understand the resilience of patients on hemodialysis and presents strategies that can be used to develop an intervention program to improve the resilience of patients on hemodialysis. Background: Improved methods of communication are needed among professionals in related fields to address the increasing complexity of clinical situations and various levels of functioning experienced by older adults who live in nursing homes. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore function-focused clinical communication among nurses and providers based on the Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR) approach toward interdisciplinary collaboration to maintain function among nursing home residents and to identify the characteristics of SBAR flows in nursing homes. Methods: Detailed interviews with 28 interdisciplinary professionals working in four nursing homes were conducted. Directed qualitative content analysis was used to identify the internal attributes of SBAR-based communication. Case analysis was conducted to identify SBAR flows. Results: Four themes emerged as key factors for function-focused interdisciplinary staff communication in nursing homes. Effective nursing care to maintain function among nursing home residents requires accurate awareness of abnormal circumstances. Knowledge of assessment and resident background are needed to address situations requiring intervention and identify the problems underlying a resident's current state. The optimal therapeutic environment is created by sharing roles and tasks among practitioners through referrals. Twelve generalized situations requiring function-focused communication (i.e., dislocation of body line because of joint contracture, change in walking, difficulty of moving because of pain, difficulty in eating, fever, change in sleep pattern, change in excretion pattern, change in weight, change in condition, change in problematic behavior, decrease in cognitive function, and change in relationships) and the related nurse-centered SBAR pathways were identified. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: These results represent a first prototype for developing practical communication guidelines for nursing-home-specific function-focused care and provide new insights into the interdisciplinary approach. Background: An interdisciplinary team-based approach in nursing homes has been suggested in the literature as a strategy for delaying functional decline in residents. Function-focused care is a philosophy-based approach in which interdisciplinary practitioners assess functional capacity and help older adults to optimize and maintain their remaining abilities. Purpose: This study explored and described the shared subjective frames of interdisciplinary practitioners as regards function-focused care for nursing home residents. Methods: Q-methodology was used to analyze the subjectivity of each factor of function-focused care for nursing home residents. Data were collected from August to September 2016. Thirty-four Q-statements were selected and scored by the 30 interdisciplinary practitioners on a 9-point scale with a normal distribution. Data were analyzed using the PQ Method 2.33 program. Results: The results revealed four factors of function-focused care, including (a) using a wait-and-see approach to encourage self-care, (b) maintaining interactive communications to identify and respond to changes, (c) reinforcing residents' inner and outer strengths for homeostasis, and (d) using a tailored approach based on comparisons between the past and the present. Shared subjectivity may provide an important collaborative framework to identify and solve complex problems related to the functional needs of nursing home residents. Conclusions: The results of this study elucidate the subjectivities of interdisciplinary practitioners and better enable their provision of effective care in support of the remaining functional abilities of older adults living in nursing homes. The findings may be used as a reference to establish communication methods and shared documentation for interdisciplinary practitioners in nursing homes and construct interdisciplinary function-focused care practice guidelines.
