Existing transportation infrastructure and traffic control systems face increasing strain as a result of rising demand, resulting in frequent congestion. Expanding infrastructure is not a feasible solution for enhancing the capacity of the road. Hence, Intelligent Transportation Systems are often employed to enhance the Level of Service (LoS). One such approach is Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control. VSL increases the LoS and safety on motorways by optimizing the speed limit according to the traffic conditions. The proliferation of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) presents fresh prospects for improving the operation and measurement of traffic states for the operation of the VSL control system. This paper introduces a method for the detection of multiple congested areas that is used for state estimation for a dynamically positioned VSL control system for urban motorways. The method utilizes Q-Learning (QL) and CAVs as mobile sensors and actuators. The proposed control approach, named Congestion Detection QL Dynamic Position VSL (CD-QL-DPVSL), dynamically detects all of the congested areas and applies two sets of actions, involving the dynamic positioning of speed limit zones and imposed speed limits for all detected congested areas simultaneously. The proposed CD-QL-DPVSL control approach underwent an evaluation across six distinct traffic scenarios, encompassing CAV penetration rates spanning from 10 % to 100 % and demonstrated a significantly better performance compared to other control approaches, including no control, rule-based VSL, two Speed-Transition-Matrices-based QL-VSL configurations with fixed speed limit zone positions, and a Speed-Transition-Matrices-based QL-DVSL with a dynamic speed limit zone position. This paper focuses on the analysis of traffic streams on two-lane highways, which are crucial components of transportation networks. Traffic flow measurement technologies, such as detection stations, radar guns, or video cameras, have been used over the years to detect the level of traffic and the operating conditions. This type of sensor can record a large amount of data which is useful to evaluate and monitor road traffic conditions, and it is possible to identify free-moving and constrained vehicles by processing the collected data. This study introduces an exponential headway model to identify the headway threshold above which vehicles can be considered as unconditioned. However, this value could identify vehicles which still retain some autonomy in their speed and maneuvering. Therefore, an additional criterion to distinguish between apparently and actually conditioned vehicles has been introduced, analyzing the speed differences between a vehicle and the preceding one. Three-month sequences of traffic monitored through radar devices placed on some Italian two-lane roads have been analyzed and an exponential headway model has been introduced, as an illustrative example. The results show that introducing the criterion of maneuvering freedom can significantly improve traffic flow analysis, modifying the starting critical values of 4 and 8 s per each studied section, to 2.5 and 3 s, approaching the values suggested by international manuals for traffic flow quality analysis. Millions of commuters face congestion as a part of their daily routines. Mitigating traffic congestion requires effective transportation planning, design, and management. Accurate traffic data are needed for informed decision making. As such, operating agencies deploy fixed-location and often temporary detectors on public roads to count passing vehicles. This traffic flow measurement is key to estimating demand throughout the network. However, fixed-location detectors are spatially sparse and do not cover the entirety of the road network, and temporary detectors are temporally sparse, providing often only a few days of measurements every few years. Against this backdrop, previous studies proposed that public transit bus fleets could be used as surveillance agents if additional sensors were installed, and the viability and accuracy of this methodology was established by manually processing video imagery recorded by cameras mounted on transit buses. In this paper, we propose to operationalize this traffic surveillance methodology for practical applications, leveraging the perception and localization sensors already deployed on these vehicles. We present an automatic, vision-based vehicle counting method applied to the video imagery recorded by cameras mounted on transit buses. First, a state-of-the-art 2D deep learning model detects objects frame by frame. Then, detected objects are tracked with the commonly used SORT method. The proposed counting logic converts tracking results to vehicle counts and real-world bird's-eye-view trajectories. Using multiple hours of real-world video imagery obtained from in-service transit buses, we demonstrate that the proposed system can detect and track vehicles, distinguish parked vehicles from traffic participants, and count vehicles bidirectionally. Traffic models have gained much popularity in recent years, in the context of smart cities and urban planning, as well as environmental and health research. With the development of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) some limitations imposed by the traditional analytical, numerical and statistical methods have been overcome. The present paper shows a case study of traffic modeling with scarce reliable data. The approach we propose resorts on the advantages of ensemble learning using a large number of related features such as road and street categories, population density, functional analysis, space syntax, previous traffic measurements and models, etc. We use advanced regression models such as Random Forest, XGBoost, CatBoost etc., ranked according to the chosen evaluation metrics and stacked in a weighted ensemble for optimal fitting. After a series of consecutive data imputations we estimate the annual average daily traffic distribution in the street and road network of Sofia city and the metropolitan municipality for 2018 and 2022, and the NO 2 levels for 2021 with accuracy resp. 78 % , 74 % and 92 % , using AutoGluon and Scikit-Learn. Based on spatial data dynamic analysis technology, the characteristics of urban rail transit passenger flow are analyzed. This study analyzes the passenger flow characteristics of urban rail transit from the perspective of operation and planning by using the dynamic analysis technology of spatial data, combined with social and economic development. Based on the analysis of research data from the study of passenger traffic and passenger traffic data measurement, the characteristics of passenger traffic from urban railways are derived from the time distribution, spatial distribution, and transfer of passengers waiting on the platform. The final length of line 3 is 39.7 m, the passenger volume is 102, with 11 people/day, the passenger flow density is 1.8/2.3, and the high section in peak hours is 2.4/3.2. Summary: In smart cities, a large number of vehicles are connected into an intelligent transportation system and share information via the vehicular communication network (VCN). Accurate, fine‐grained, and comprehensive traffic measurements are very crucial for the controller's decision making in software‐defined networking (SDN) in VCN. Fine‐grained traffic measurements can accurately portray network behaviors for VCN. However, this will increase a large amount of measurement overhead. Therefore, how to effectively obtain accurate and fine‐grained traffic is a huge challenge for VCN. To the end, this paper proposes a novel accurate and SDN‐based fine‐grained traffic measurement approach to obtain comprehensive traffic in VCN. Firstly, based on SDN architecture, we exploit the pull‐based sampling mechanism to quickly obtain coarse‐grained traffic measurement values. Secondly, based on the matrix completion theory, we use both interpolation and optimization methods to obtain fine‐grained traffic measurements. Thirdly, the optimization model and detailed algorithm are proposed to attain accurate traffic. Finally, we conduct a larger number of simulations to validate the measurement approach proposed in this paper. Simulation results show that our approach exhibits better performance and is promising. Traffic forecasting plays a critical role in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in smart cities. Travelers as well as urban managers rely on reliable traffic information to make their decisions for route choice and traffic management. However, noisy or missing traffic data poses a problem for accurate and robust traffic forecasting. While data-driven models such as deep neural networks can achieve high prediction accuracy with complete datasets, sensor malfunctions, and environmental effects degrade the performance of such models, as these models rely heavily on precise traffic measurements for model training and estimation. Consequently, incomplete traffic data poses a challenge for robust model design that can make accurate traffic forecasts with noisy/missing data. This research proposes the Robust Spatiotemporal Graph Convolutional Network (RT-GCN), a traffic prediction model that handles noise perturbations and missing data using a Gaussian distributed node representation and a variance based attention mechanism. There has been an increase in vehicles across the globe. Also, the congestion due to traffic has leapfrogged in India. The traffic flow information has been required to find out the route with minimum congestion and forecast the traffic. And this has been a part of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) which would help build smart cities. A lot of work has been done on the traffic measurement system. But the integration of emerging techniques such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing has provided a lot of research scope in ITS. This paper has proposed an IoT-based method to determine the real-time traffic flow in a road section with ultrasonic sensors, Arduino, ESP8266 Wi-Fi module, and an open-source cloud. There has been an average traffic flow every five minutes to be displayed in the cloud platform. This method can be very much cost-effective with less power consumption and improved accuracy. Advanced analysis of road traffic data is an essential component of today's intelligent transportation systems. This paper presents a video-based vehicle speed measurement system based on a proposed mathematical model using a movement pattern vector as an input variable. The system uses the intrusion line technique to measure the movement pattern vector with low computational complexity. Further, the mathematical model introduced to generate the pdf (probability density function) of a vehicle's speed that improves the speed estimate. As a result, the presented model provides a reliable framework with which to optically measure the speeds of passing vehicles with high accuracy. As a proof of concept, the proposed method was tested on a busy highway under realistic circumstances. The results were validated by a GPS (Global Positioning System)-equipped car and the traffic regulations at the measurement site. Short-term traffic flow forecasting is a key step to achieve the performance of intelligent transportation system (ITS). Timely and accurate traffic information prediction is also the prerequisite of realizing proactive traffic control and dynamic traffic assignment effectively. Based on the fact that univariate forecasting methods have limited forecasting abilities when the data is missing or erroneous and that single models make no full use of information underline data, a new hybrid method with multivariate for short-term traffic flow forecasting is proposed. This method combines statistical analysis method with computational intelligence techniques to mine the characteristic of traffic flow as well as forecast short-term traffic state. First, the wavelet de-noising is employed to remove the noise information. Then, time series analysis is used to analyze time-varying and periodic characteristic of traffic flow. Furthermore, the seasonal auto-regressive moving average with external input (SARIMAX) is established to fit traffic flow with occupancy as exogenous variables. Finally, wavelet forecast is adopted to forecast the values of occupancy which are used as exogenous input, and a WSARIMAX is constructed to forecast traffic flow. Using the relationship of flow and occupancy at the same road section and taking traffic flow and occupancy data from freeway I-694 EB in the Twin Cities as endogenous variables and exogenous variables respectively, this paper studies the forecasting performance of the proposed method. The study results are encouraging. Compared with SARIMA newly proposed in literature, WSARIMA and SARIMAX improved method with wavelet analysis and multivariate modeling method, the proposed method gets improvements of 12.95%, 12.62% and 10.41% in forecasting accuracy of one-step ahead respectively. The main objective of this work is to automatically detect moving vehicles on the road. Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) classifier is adopted in this paper to classify moving vehicles on road. An input traffic video scenes are taken with vertical and horizontal positioned cameras. The proposed system contains six major steps such as preprocessing, vehicle detection, tracking, structural matching, feature extraction and classification. In this proposed method, preprocessing consists of color conversion and noise removal. Vehicle detection is performed by using background subtraction and Otsu thresholding algorithm. Kalman filter is used in the third step to track moving vehicles in successive frames. In the fourth step, Active Shape Modelling method is used to recover the 3D shape of the vehicle in order to find the boundaries of vehicle. In the fifth step, features of the detected vehicles are extracted by Harrish corner detector, log Gabor filter and these features are taken into account to classify the types of vehicle. Finally, ANFIS is proposed to classify the vehicles which is trained by updating the membership function. Technological limitations and practical difficulties cause inevitable losses of traffic data in the typical processing chain of an intelligent transportation system. This has motivated the development of imputation algorithms for mitigating the consequences of such losses. As the involved datasets are usually multidimensional and bear strong spatio-temporal correlations, we propose for traffic data imputation a tensor completion algorithm which promotes parsimony of an estimated orthogonal Tucker model by iteratively softly thresholding its core. The motivation of this strategy is discussed on the basis of characteristics typically possessed by real-world datasets. An evaluation of the proposed method using speed data from the Grenoble south ring (France) shows that our algorithm outperforms other imputation methods, including tensor completion algorithms, and delivers good results even when the loss is severely systematic, being mostly concentrated in long time windows (of up to three hours) spread along the considered time horizon. In this paper, we present necessary premises for the deployment of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) integrating Big Data analytics of road network traffic measurements of the city of Mohammedia, Morocco. Thus, we introduce an architecture based on three main layers such as IoV, Fog Computing and Cloud Computing Layer. We specifically put more focus on Fog Computing layer in which we develop a framework for a real-time collecting and processing events generated by intelligent vehicles as well as visualizing traffic state on each road section. Furthermore, we consider deployment and test of the proposed framework using events retrieved from a Vanets -type micro simulation. For satisfactory traffic management of an intelligent transport system, it is vital that traffic microwave radar detectors (TMRDs) can provide real-time traffic information with high accuracy. In this study, we develop several information-aided smart schemes for traffic detection improvements of TMRDs in multiple-lane environments. Specifically, we select appropriate thresholds not only for removing noise from fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) of regional lane contexts but also for reducing FFT side lobes within each lane. The resulting FFTs of reflected vehicle signals and those of clutter are distinguishable. We exploit FFT and lane-/or time stamp-related information for developing smart schemes, which mitigate adverse effects of lane-crossing FFT side lobes of a vehicle signal. As such, the proposed schemes can enhance the detection accuracy of both lane vehicle flow and directional traffic volume. Recently, the correct estimation of traffic flowhas begun to be considered an essential component in intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, a new statistical method to predict traffic flows using time series analyses and geometric correlations is proposed. The novelty of the proposed method is two-fold: (1) a 3D heat map is designed to describe the traffic conditions between roads, which can effectively represent the correlations between spatially- and temporally-adjacent traffic states; and (2) the relationship between the adjacent roads on the spatiotemporal domain is represented by cliques in MRF and the clique parameters are obtained by example-based learning. In order to assess the validity of the proposed method, it is tested using data from expressway traffic that are provided by the Korean Expressway Corporation, and the performance of the proposed method is compared with existing approaches. Short-time traffic flow prediction is necessary for advanced traffic management system (ATMS) and advanced traveler information system (ATIS). In order to improve the effect of short-term traffic flow prediction, this paper presents a short-term traffic flow multistep prediction method based on similarity search of time series. Firstly, the landmark model is used to represent time series of traffic flow data. Then the input data of prediction model are determined through searching similar time series. Finally, the echo state networks model is used for traffic flow multistep prediction. The performance of the proposed method is measured with expressway traffic flow data collected from loop detectors in Shanghai, China. Although more attention has been attracted to benefit evaluation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) deployment, how ITS impact the traffic system and make great effects is little considered. As a subsystem of ITS, in this paper, Intelligent Transportation Management System (ITMS) is studied with its impact mechanism on the road traffic system. Firstly, the correlative factors between ITMS and the road traffic system are presented and 3 positive feedback chains are defined. Secondly, we introduce the theory of Fundamental Diagram (FD) and traffic system entropy to demonstrate the correlative relationship between ITMS and feedback chains. The analyzed results show that ITMS, as a negative feedback factor, has damping functions on the coupling relationship of all 3 positive feedback chains. It indicates that with its deployment in Beijing, ITMS has impacted the improvement of efficiency and safety for the road traffic system. Finally, related benefits brought by ITMS are presented corresponding to the correlative factors, and effect standards are identified for evaluating ITMS comprehensive benefits. Abstract: Day-to-day traffic dynamics aim at modeling driver’s day-to-day learning and behavior adjustment process and providing insight on how the traffic flow pattern evolves over time. A number of continuous-time path flow dynamics have been proposed and studied in the literature whose stationary path flow pattern coincides with user equilibrium. However, the application prospects of these findings are limited by the fact that it might be difficult for transportation management centers to measure and monitor day-to-day dynamic path flow pattern. On the other hand, thanks to the fast development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), the day-to-day link flow pattern can be more easily monitored and analyzed. Thus, it is not only of theoretical interest but also with implement viability to explore equilibrium in the perspective of link flow dynamics. Present systems for road traffic surveillance largely utilize MEMS magnetometers for the purpose of vehicle detection and classification. Magnetoresistive sensing or LR oscillation circuitry are technologies providing the sensors with the competitive advantage which lies in the energy efficiency and low price. There are several chip suppliers on the market who specialize in the development of these sensors. The aim of this paper is to compare available sensors from the viewpoint of their suitability for traffic measurements. A summary of the achieved results is given in the form of the score for each sensor. The introduced sensor chart should provide the audience with knowledge about pros and cons of sensors, especially if intended for the purposes of road traffic surveillance. Traffic state prediction is a key component in intelligent transport systems (ITS) and has attracted much attention over the last few decades. Advances in computational power and availability of a large amount of data have paved the way to employ advanced neural network (NN) models for ITS, including deep architectures. There have been various NN‐based approaches proposed for short‐term traffic state prediction that are surveyed in this article, where the existing NN models are classified and their application to this area is reviewed. An in‐depth discussion is provided to demonstrate how different types of NNs have been used for different aspects of short‐term traffic state prediction. Finally, possible further research directions are suggested for additional applications of NN models, especially using deep architectures, to address the dynamic nature in complex transportation networks. Vehicle driving path planning is an important information service in intelligent transportation systems. As an important basis for path planning optimization, the travel time prediction method has attracted much attention. However, traffic flow has features of high nonlinearity, time-varying, and uncertainty, which makes it hard for prediction method with single feature to meet the accuracy demand of intelligent transportation system in big data environment. In this paper, the historical vehicle Global Positioning System (GPS) information data is used to establish the traffic prediction model. Firstly, the Clustering in QUEst (CLIQUE)-based clustering algorithm V-CLIQUE is proposed to analyze the historical vehicle GPS data. Secondly, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based prediction model is proposed. Finally, the ANN-based weighted shortest path algorithm, A-Dijkstra, is proposed. We used mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) to evaluate the predictive model and compare it with the predicted results of Average and support regression vector (SRV). Experiments show that the improved ANN path planning model we proposed can accurately predict real-time traffic status at the given location.
