Background: Deltamethrin, as a highly effective and broad-spectrum insecticide, has been widely used for agricultural pest control such as Aphis gossypii worldwide. Increasing evidence has shown that despite great economic benefits brought by it, deltamethrin has also non-negligible side effects. However, the potential risks and related molecular mechanisms remain largely unclear., Results: Herein, the life table parameters and transcriptome sequencing analyses of the four successive aphid generations were performed to investigate the hormesis and transgenerational effects of deltamethrin on A. gossypii. The life table analysis showed that although the exposure of G0 aphid to 30% lethal concentration (LC 30 ) deltamethrin significantly reduced the net reproduction rate (R 0 ), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and fecundity of G0, but it significantly enhanced the R 0 and fecundity of subsequent two generations (G1 and G2) of A. gossypii. Moreover, transcriptomic analyses showed that the signaling pathways related to posttranscriptional regulation (spliceosome), protein processing, longevity regulating, and cell proliferation (DNA replication, homologous recombination and non-homologous end-joining) were significantly up-regulated in G1 or G2 under LC 30 deltamethrin treatment. Additionally, we also found that the deltamethrin-sulfoxaflor rotation of G0 and G1 still induced reproductive stimulation, but the reproductive stimulation induced by insecticides rotation treatment was significantly lower than that in the deltamethrin exposure alone., Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that sublethal concentrations of deltamethrin significantly enhanced the offspring fecundity of cotton aphid. Many freshwater systems are continuously exposed to waste streams like municipal wastewater and agricultural runoff, leading to exposure to chemicals that can cause mortality and behavioural changes in aquatic organisms. While research has advanced our understanding of pesticide effects on behaviour of aquatic organisms, the impacts of pharmaceuticals are less understood. Psychopharmaceuticals are particularly interesting because they can act on nervous systems, potentially affecting the behaviour of aquatic organisms. Sublethal behavioural effects can be crucial in ecotoxicological research for environmental pharmaceuticals and are often detected below lethal concentrations. Gammarids, especially Gammarus pulex, are widely used in ecotoxicological studies due to their ecological role and sensitivity to pollutants. This study aims to evaluate the sensitivity of six swimming behaviour endpoints in G. pulex compared to the conventional endpoints immobility and mortality, using different chemicals with distinct modes of action: insecticides imidacloprid and chlorpyrifos and the pharmaceuticals carbamazepine and citalopram. After a 2-hour exposure, the mobile organisms were assessed for their swimming speed, acceleration, curvature, thigmotaxis and startle response (magnitude and duration). Our study reveals that G. pulex exhibits varied behavioural responses to different chemical pollutants. While behavioural endpoints can indicate harmful effects on aquatic organisms, they are not consistently more sensitive than traditional endpoints, such as immobility and mortality. The insecticides imidacloprid and chlorpyrifos show development of immobility and mortality without prior sublethal behavioural effects, suggesting a limited utility of behavioural endpoints as early warning indicators. In contrast, the pharmaceuticals carbamazepine and citalopram demonstrate adverse effects through behavioural changes before immobility and mortality occur. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) is a major polyphagous pest of global relevance due to the damage it causes to various crops. Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is generally used by farmers to manage S. litura, however, its widespread use has resulted in the development of insecticide resistance. Therefore, in the present study, a population of S. litura was exposed to CPF for eight generations under laboratory conditions, resulting in a 2.81-fold resistance ratio compared with that of the unselected laboratory population (Unsel-Lab). The exposure of Unsel-Lab and CPF-Sel populations to their respective lethal and sublethal concentrations reduced larval survival, adult emergence, and prolonged development period, and induced morphological deformities in adults. The reproductive and demographic parameters were also significantly lowered in the treated larvae of both populations at higher concentrations. Moreover, hormetic effects on fecundity, next-generation larvae, the net reproductive rate (R 0 ), and relative fitness (R f ) were observed at lower sublethal concentrations of CPF, specifically at the LC 5 of Unsel-Lab and the LC 10 of the CPF-Sel population. Sublethal exposure to CPF negatively affected the biological and demographic parameters in both populations, although the impact was more prominent in the CPF-Sel population. The relative fitness of the CPF-Sel was also greatly reduced at the LC 50 (0.28) compared to that of the Unsel-Lab population. However, only a marginal trade-off of insecticide resistance evolution was observed in the CPF-Sel population in the absence of insecticide selection pressure. Neonicotinoid insecticides are widely used in agriculture and have been linked to various detrimental physiological effects on wild birds. Despite this, the impact of acetamiprid - a less studied member of the neonicotinoid family - on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responsible for the hormonal regulation of the response to stress has rarely been examined in birds. In our study, we explored the effects of acetamiprid on feather levels of corticosterone, the major end product of the HPA, and blood oxidative status of House sparrows (Passer domesticus), following the ingestion of a low, field-realistic dose during two consecutive experiments in 2015 and 2016. We involved 112 birds in each experiment - 56 males and 56 females - that were administered a placebo or a dose of acetamiprid equivalent to 0.5% of the LD 50 of the Zebra finch over the entire duration of the experiments, which lasted approximately three weeks. We measured corticosterone concentrations in feathers grown during an acclimation phase before ingestion and in newly grown feather after the experiment and assessed three oxidative stress markers in the blood. We found no impact of acetamiprid on oxidative stress markers. However, in 2015, male sparrows that ingested acetamiprid exhibited higher corticosterone levels in their feathers compared to those that received a placebo. No such difference was found in females. Interestingly, this effect was not observed in year 2016, which was characterised by less stressful conditions for the birds. Emamectin benzoate is an avermectin bio-insecticide commonly used for managing several insect pests including Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a major polyphagous pest of many cultivated crops. The current study was conducted to evaluate the effects of emamectin benzoate on the fitness of S. litura populations exhibiting differential susceptibility to insecticide. The selection process and all the bioassays were carried out using 6-day-old 2nd instar larvae of S. litura. A field-collected population of S. litura was divided into two groups: one selected with emamectin benzoate for eight generations (EB-Sel) and the other kept unexposed (Unsel-Lab) to insecticide in the laboratory. An increase in resistance ratio from 1.71-fold in the F 1 generation to 22.54-fold in the F 8 generation of the EB-Sel population was observed compared to the Unsel-Lab (F 8 ) population. The EB-Sel and Unsel-Lab populations were treated with their respective lethal and sub-lethal concentrations which resulted in an extended development period, decreased larval survival, and adult emergence along with increased morphological abnormalities in adults. Significant reductions were observed in both male and female longevity, fecundity, egg hatching, net reproductive rate (R 0 ), intrinsic rate of increase (r m ), and finite rate of increase (λ) in EB-Sel and Unsel-Lab populations. Higher concentrations of the insecticide also reduced the relative fitness (R f ) of S. litura larvae, with maximum effect at LC 50 of the EB-Sel population where the R f value was 0.32 compared to the Unsel-Lab population. Both populations have been affected by emamectin benzoate exposure, however, the impact was more pronounced in the EB-Sel population indicating fitness costs. Our results suggested the fitness cost linked to emamectin benzoate resistance in S. litura which might favor managing insecticide resistance by reducing the frequency of resistant alleles by removing selection pressure. Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNI) are agonists of insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) that induce non-elucidate mechanisms of abnormal behavior in insects. In this work, we investigated the effects of sublethal doses of the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam (TMX) on neurochemical and physiological parameters in cockroaches. Sublethal doses of TMX (0.01-10 ng.g -1 body mass) caused significant alterations in most of the neurophysiological parameters evaluated. TMX reduced sustained locomotor activity by 19.9-25.8 %, depending on the dose. Leg grooming activity increased by 124.5 ± 3.4 %, 158.7 ± 3.5 %, 168.3 ± 3.4 %, and 160.4 ± 3.4 % (mean ± SEM) with TMX doses of 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 ng.g -1 , respectively. Exploratory activity was significantly reduced only at the lowest TMX dose (0.01 ng.g -1 ) - the time spent immobile increased from 30 % to ∼45 %, whereas none of the doses affected the walking speed. Treatment with TMX (0.01 ng.g -1 ) markedly reduced the olfactory sensitivity of the cockroaches and also reduced the mechanosensory action potential amplitude, rise time and decay time by 61.2 ± 19 %, 50 ± 4 %, and 76.8 ± 9.5 %, respectively. In semi-isolated heart preparations, TMX caused positive chronotropism (increases of 34.7 ± 15.9 %, 26.8 ± 7.8 %, 43.0 ± 16.5 %, and 19.0 ± 13.7 % for 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 ng of TMX, respectively). TMX attenuated the activity of glutathione-S-transferase by 35.1 ± 6.4 % at the highest dose tested (10 ng.g -1 ). TMX caused alterations in the metal ion content of cockroach brains that varied with the dose tested and the ion examined. The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), poses a significant threat to food security, necessitating effective management strategies. While chemical control remains a primary approach, understanding the toxicity and detoxification mechanisms of different insecticides is crucial. In this study, we conducted leaf-dipping bioassays to assess the toxicity of quinalphos and beta-cypermethrin·emamectin benzoate (β-cyp·EMB) on S. frugiperda larvae. Additionally, we assessed the response of alterations in CarE, GST, MFO, and AChE activities to sublethal concentrations of these insecticides over various treatment durations. Results indicated that β-cyp·EMB exhibited higher toxicity than quinalphos in S. frugiperda. Interestingly, the highest activities of GST, CarE, MFO, and AChE were observed at 6 h exposure to LC 10 and LC 25 of β-cyp·EMB, surpassing equivalent sublethal concentrations of quinalphos. Subsequently, GST and CarE activities exposure to β-cyp·EMB steadily decreased, while MFO and AChE activities exposure to both insecticides was initially decreased then increased. Conversely, two sublethal concentrations of quinalphos notably enhanced GST activity across all exposure durations, with significantly higher than β-cyp·EMB at 12-48 h. Similarly, CarE activity was also increased at various durations. Our research has exhibited significant alterations in enzyme activities exposure to both concentration and duration. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analysis showed significant correlations among these enzyme activities at different treatment durations. Imidacloprid and other neonicotinoid insecticides severely impact the performance and survival of honey bees and other pollinators. In the present study, we focused on the gene expression profile of newly emerged Apis mellifera queen bees after sublethal imidacloprid treatment during the larval stage. Royal jelly containing 1 ppb imidacloprid was provided to larvae for 3 consecutive days (2-4 days postemergence). Queen larvae treated with imidacloprid showed lower capping and emergence rates (35.5% and 24.22%, respectively) than did control larvae (61.68% and 52.95%, respectively), indicating a high failure rate of queen rearing associated with imidacloprid exposure during the larval stage. The molecular response to imidacloprid treatment was examined next. By comparing the gene expression profiles of imidacloprid-treated queen larvae and those of control queen larvae using DESeq2, we identified 215 differentially expressed genes, with 105 and 111 up- and downregulated genes, respectively. Gene Ontology results indicated that chitin binding- and calcium ion binding-related genes were upregulated, while phototransduction- and visual perception-related genes were downregulated. The high mortality rate and altered gene expression profiles suggest that treatment with even 1 ppb imidacloprid can severely impact queen bee survival. Background: G1 strain Ganaspis brasiliensis (Ihering) has been recently released in both Europe and America as a biological control agent of the spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura). In initial phases of classical biological control programs, it becomes imperative to evaluate the susceptibility of parasitoids to insecticides, to identify the best alternatives to adopt in an integrated pest management and organic perspective. In this study, we evaluated lethal and sublethal effects of topical application of five different insecticides classes: neonicotinoids, diamides, pyrethroids, organophosphates and spinosyns. Additionally, we tested residual toxicity in field trials in vineyards and sweet cherry orchards., Results: Adult wasps' susceptibility to different insecticides' classes were consistent between laboratory and field. Spinosad exhibited the highest toxicity, with a median lethal concentration (LC 50 ) of 0.00372 of the maximum field dose, and the highest knock-down effect in field trials, causing 92.5 ± 5% of mortality at T 0 . λ-cyhalothrin showed sublethal effects on both male and female insects' longevity when applied at LC 30 . In field trials, deltamethrin showed the highest persistence, causing significant parasitoid mortality up to 14 days after treatment. Conversely, cyantraniliprole was the least toxic active ingredient according to both topical and residual bioassays, even though its residues caused mortality up to 7 days after the treatment in the field., Conclusion: Our results indicate that spinosad and λ-cyhalothrin are highly toxic to G. brasiliensis, making them incompatible with classical biological control programs. Cyantraniliprole exhibited lower toxicity, and may be considered a selective pesticide for the integrated management of D. suzukii. © 2024 The Author(s). We compared the effects of lambda-cyhalothrin as the pure active ingredient and as a formulated product (Zero®), on the larval stage of the autochthonous species Boana pulchella. We evaluated ecotoxicological endpoints, behavioral and developmental alterations, and the biochemical detoxifying, neurotoxic, and oxidative stress responses, covering a wide concentration range from environmental to high application levels. Both pyrethroid preparations displayed similar ecotoxicity (median lethal concentration of ~0.5 mg/L), with the lethal effect of Zero® being more pronounced than that of the active ingredient. Sublethal behavioral alterations in natatory activity were observed at 1000 times lower concentrations, indicating the ecological hazard of tadpole exposure to this pyrethroid at environmentally relevant concentrations. Biochemical endpoints in B. pulchella larvae showed significant responses to lambda-cyhalothrin in the ng/L range; these responses were different for the pure or the formulated product, and they were variable at higher concentrations. Principal components analysis confirmed the prevalence of biochemical responses as early endpoints at the lowest lambda-cyhalothrin concentrations; the Integrated Biomarker Response Index proportionally increased with pyrethroid concentration in a similar way for the pure and the formulated products. We conclude that lambda-cyhalothrin is of concern from an environmental perspective, with particular emphasis on autochthonous anuran development. The battery of biochemical biomarkers included in our study showed a consistent integrated biomarker response, indicating that this is a potent tool for monitoring impacts on amphibians. Diaphorina citri is a serious citrus pest. Dinotefuran is highly insecticidal against D. citri . To analyze the sublethal effects of dinotefuran on D. citri adults, an indoor toxicity test was performed, which revealed that the lethal concentration 50 (LC 50 ) values were 4.23 and 0.50 μg/mL for 24 and 48 h treatments, respectively. RNA-Seq led to the identification of 71 and 231 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after dinotefuran treatments with LC 20 and LC 50 doses, respectively. Many of the DEGs are significantly enriched in the apoptosis pathway. Dinotefuran-induced apoptosis in the gut cells was confirmed through independent assays of 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining. Increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential were observed. Four caspase genes were identified, and dinotefuran treatments resulted in increased mRNA levels of DcCasp1 and DcCasp3a . These findings shed light on the sublethal effects of dinotefuran on D. citri .

Bees play a crucial role as pollinating insects in both natural and cultivated areas. However, the use of pesticides, such as thiamethoxam, has been identified as a contributing factor compromising bee health. The current risk assessment primarily relies on the model species Apis mellifera, raising concerns about the applicability of these assessments to other bee groups, including stingless bees. In this study, we investigated the acute toxicity of thiamethoxam on the stingless bee Frieseomelitta varia by determining the average lethal concentration (LC 50 ) and mean lethal time (LT 50 ). Additionally, we evaluated the enzymatic profile of Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), Carboxylesterase-3 (CaE-3), and Glutathione S-Transferase (GST), in the heads and abdomens of F. varia after exposure to thiamethoxam (LC 50/10 ). The LC 50 of thiamethoxam was determined to be 0.68 ng ai/μL, and the LT 50 values were 37 days for the control group, 25 days at LC 50/10 , and 27 days at LC 50/100 . The thiamethoxam significantly decreased the survival time of F. varia. Furthermore, the enzymatic profile exhibited differences in CaE3 activity within one day in the heads and ten days in the abdomen. GST activity showed differences in the abdomen after one and five days of thiamethoxam exposure. These findings suggests that the abdomen is more affected than the head after oral exposure to thiamethoxam. Aphis gossypii Glover is one of the most agriculturally important phloem-feeding economic pests, causing tremendous loss in crop yield annually. The hormesis is an important cause of A. gossypii resistance formation, population resurgence, and re-outbreak. However, whether the hormesises induced by different insecticides interact mutually remain largely unclear. In the study, four-generation A. gossypii experiment found that the 24-h sublethal-dose (LC 20 ) sulfoxaflor treatment on G0 significantly increased the net reproductive rate (R0) and fecundity of G1 and G2 generation A. gossypii, but it did not significantly affect the fecundity of G3 and G4 individuals. Transcriptomic analyses revealed that the insecticide-induced significant up-regulation of pathways ribosome, energy metabolism, and the DNA replication and reparation might be responsible for the enhancement of fecundity in G1 and G2 A. gossypii. Notably, G0 exposure to LC 20 sulfoxaflor followed by G1 exposure to LC 30 deltamethrin resulted in a stronger reproductive stimulation than sulfoxaflor or deltamethrin exposure alone. In agricultural environments, bees are routinely exposed to combinations of pesticides. For the most part, exposure to these pesticide mixtures does not result in acute lethal effects, but we know very little about potential sublethal effects and their consequences on reproductive success and population dynamics. In this study, we orally exposed newly emerged females of the solitary bee Osmia cornuta to environmentally-relevant levels of acetamiprid (a cyano-substituted neonicotinoid insecticide) singly and in combination with tebuconazole (a sterol-biosynthesis inhibitor (SBI) fungicide). The amount of feeding solution consumed during the exposure phase was lowest in bees exposed to the pesticide mixture. Following exposure, females were individually marked and released into oilseed rape field cages to monitor their nesting performance and assess their reproductive success. The nesting performance and reproductive success of bees exposed to the fungicide or the insecticide alone were similar to those of control bees and resulted in a 1.3-1.7 net population increases. By contrast, bees exposed to the pesticide mixture showed lower establishment, shortened nesting period, and reduced fecundity. Together, these effects led to a 0.5-0.6 population decrease. Female establishment and shortened nesting period were the main population bottlenecks. We found no effects of the pesticide mixture on nest provisioning rate, offspring body weight or sex ratio. Our study shows how sublethal pesticide exposure may affect several components of bee reproductive success and, ultimately, population growth. Background: Mating is an essential factor that governs the size of insect populations that reproduce sexually. The extensive application of insecticides has both lethal and sublethal effects on the physiology and mating behavior of insect natural enemies. The predatory bug Cyrtorhinus lividipennis is a natural enemy of planthopper and leafhopper populations in the rice ecosystem. Unfortunately, the effects of insecticides on the mating behavior of C. lividipennis are not well-understood., Results: The mating behavior of C. livdipennis consisted of mounting, antennal touch and mating attempts, genital insertion, adjustment of posture, and separation of the mating pair. Approximately 82.5% of the C. lividipennis mating pairs displayed their first mating at 12-36 h postemergence. Mating activity occurred throughout a 24-h period, with peak activity at 12:00-14:00 h, and the mean duration of mating was 48.75 min. Sublethal exposure to imidacloprid increased mating latency. Compared with the controls, the duration of courtship, pre-mating and adjusting posture for males treated with imidacloprid were prolonged. The duration of mating for females treated with imidacloprid was prolonged relative to untreated controls. The fecundity and daily spawning capacity of females treated with imidacloprid were higher than the untreated controls., Conclusion: Our results provide insight into the mating process of C. lividipennis. Imidacloprid prolonged the duration of mating, which may explain the enhanced reproductive output in C. lividipennis females treated with imidacloprid. The aboveground oligolectic bee, Heriades truncorum, is a particularly good model for studying the impact of pesticides on sexual communication, since some aspects of its mating behavior have previously been described. We have tested (1) the interference of the pesticide flupyradifurone on male precopulatory behavior and male mating partner preferences, (2) the way that the pesticide interferes in male quality assessment by the female, and (3) the effects of the pesticide on the chemical compounds in the female cuticle. We exposed bees of both sexes to a sublethal concentration of flupyradifurone. Various behaviors were registered in a mating arena with two females (one unexposed and one exposed) and one male (either unexposed or exposed). Unexposed males were quicker to attempt to mate. Lufenuron, a benzoylurea chitin synthesis inhibitor, is effective against many insect pests. However, the insecticidal activity of lufenuron has not been completely elucidated, nor has its disturbing effect on chitin synthesis genes. In this study, bioassay results demonstrated an outstanding toxicity of lufenuron against Helicoverpa armigera larvae. The treated larvae died from abortive molting and metamorphosis defects, and severe separation of epidermis and subcutaneous tissues was observed. Treatment of 3rd- and 4th-instar larvae with LC 25 lufenuron significantly extended the duration of larval and pupal stage, reduced the rates of pupation and emergence, and adversely affected pupal weight. Besides, lufenuron can severely reduce chitin content in larval integument, and the lufenuron-treated larvae showed reduced trehalose content in their hemolymph. Further analysis using RNA sequencing revealed that five chitin synthesis genes were down-regulated, whereas the expressions of two chitin degradation genes were significantly enhanced. Knockdown of chitin synthase 1 (HaCHS1), uridine diphosphate-N-acetylglucosamine-pyrophosphorylase (HaUAP), phosphoacetyl glucosamine mutase (HaPGM), and glucosamine 6-phosphate N-acetyl-transferase (HaGNPAT) in H. armigera led to significant increase in larval susceptibilities to LC 25 lufenuron by 75.48%, 65.00%, 68.42% and 28.00%, respectively. As an agricultural pest, the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, poses a severe threat to agriculture in China. Chlorantraniliprole has been widely used to control this pest. In our previous studies, we discovered that LD 10 , LD 20 , and LD 30 chlorantraniliprole promoted encapsulation in the 4th instar larvae of the FAW, with LD 30 chlorantraniliprole having the most significant effect. To further investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the sublethal effects of chlorantraniliprole on encapsulation in the FAW, this study conducted the effects of encapsulation in 4th instar larvae of the FAW exposed to LD 30 chlorantraniliprole. Then, we analyzed the transcriptome of the FAW hemolymph treated with LD 30 chlorantraniliprole and identified genes related to encapsulation using RNAi. Our results showed that the encapsulation in the FAW was enhanced at 6, 12, 18, 24, and 48 h after exposure to LD 30 chlorantraniliprole. Additionally, LD 30 chlorantraniliprole significantly affected the expression of certain immune-related genes, with the heat shock protein 70 family gene SfHSP68.1 showing the most significant upregulation. Subsequent interference with SfHSP68.1 resulted in a significant inhibition of encapsulation in FAW. These findings suggested that LD 30 chlorantraniliprole can promote encapsulation in the FAW by upregulating SfHSP68.1 expression. The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), is a highly polyphagous invasive pest that damages various crops. Pesticide control is the most common and effective strategy to control FAW. In this study, we evaluated the toxicity of metaflumizone and indoxacarb against third-instar FAW larvae using the insecticide-incorporated artificial diet method under laboratory conditions. Both metaflumizone and indoxacarb exhibited substantial toxicity against FAW, with LC 50 values of 2.43 and 14.66 mg/L at 72 h, respectively. The sublethal effects of metaflumizone and indoxacarb on parental and F1 generation FAW were investigated by exposing third-instar larvae to LC 10 and LC 30 concentrations of these insecticides. Sublethal exposure to these two insecticides significantly shortened adult longevity, extended pupal developmental times and led to reduced pupal weight, pupation rates, and adult fecundity in the treated parental generation and F1 generation at LC 10 or LC 30 concentrations, in comparison to the control group. The larval developmental times were shortened in the parental generation but prolonged in the F1 generation, after being treated with sublethal concentrations of metaflumizone. Furthermore, larvae exposed to LC 10 or LC 30 concentrations of indoxacarb exhibited elevated activity levels of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase and glutathione S-transferase, which coincides with the observed synergistic effect of piperonyl butoxide and diethyl maleate. In agroecosystems, insects contend with chemical insecticides often encountered at sublethal concentrations. Insects' exposure to these mild stresses may induce hormetic effects, which has consequences for managing insect pests. In this study, we used an electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique to investigate the feeding behavior and an age-stage, two-sex life table approach to estimate the sublethal effects of thiamethoxam on greenbug, Schizaphis graminum. The LC 5 and LC 10 of thiamethoxam significantly decreased longevity and fecundity of directly exposed adult aphids (F 0 ). However, the adult longevity, fecundity, and reproductive days (RP d )-indicating the number of days in which the females produce offspring - in the progeny generation (F 1 ) exhibited significant increase when parental aphids (F 0 ) were treated with LC 5 of the active ingredient. Subsequently, key demographic parameters such as intrinsic rate of increase (r) and net reproductive rate (R 0 ) significantly increased at LC 5 treatment. EPG recordings showed that total durations of non-probing (Np), intercellular stylet pathway (C), and salivary secretion into the sieve element (E1) were significantly increased, while mean duration of probing (Pr) and total duration of phloem sap ingestion and concurrent salivation (E2) were decreased in F 0 adults exposed to LC 5 and LC 10 . Interestingly, in the F 1 generation, total duration of Np was significantly decreased while total duration of E2 was increased in LC 5 treatment. Taken together, our results showed that an LC5 of thiamethoxam induces intergenerational hormetic effects on the demographic parameters and feeding behavior of F 1 individuals of S. graminum. Background: The stingless bee, Trigona spinipes, is an important pollinator of numerous native and cultivated plants. Trigona spinipes populations can be negatively impacted by insecticides commonly used for pest control in crops. However, this species has been neglected in toxicological studies. Here we observed the effects of seven insecticides on the survival of bees that had fed directly on insecticide-contaminated food sources or received insecticides via trophallactic exchanges between nestmates. The effects of insecticides on flight behavior were also determined for the compounds considered to be of low toxicity., Results: Imidacloprid, spinosad and malathion were categorized as highly toxic to T. spinipes, whereas lambda-cyhalothrin, methomyl and chlorfenapyr were of medium to low toxicity and interfered with two aspects of flight behavior evaluated here. Chlorantraniliprole was the only insecticide tested here that had no significant effect on T. spinipes survival, although it did interfere with one aspect of flight capacity. A single bee that had ingested malathion, spinosad or imidacloprid, could contaminate three, four and nineteen other bees, respectively via trophallaxis, resulting in the death of the recipients., Conclusion: This is the first study to evaluate the ecotoxicology of a range of insecticides that not only negatively affected T. spinipes survival, but also interfered with flight capacity, a very important aspect of pollination behavior. In addition to the acute lethal toxicity, insecticides might affect population dynamics of insect pests by inducing life history trait changes under low concentrations, however, the underlying mechanisms remain not well understood. Here we examined systemic impacts on development and reproduction caused by low concentration exposures to cyantraniliprole in the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, and the putative underlying mechanisms were investigated. The results showed that exposure of third-instar larvae to LC 10 and LC 30 of cyantraniliprole significantly extended larvae duration by 1.46 and 5.41 days, respectively. Treatment with LC 30 of cyantraniliprole significantly decreased the pupae weight and pupation rate as well as the longevity, fecundity and egg hatchability of female adults. Consistently, we found that exposure of FAW to LC 30 cyantraniliprole downregulated the mRNA expression of four ecdysteroid biosynthesis genes including SfNobo, SfShd, SfSpo and SfDib and one ecdysone response gene SfE75 in the larvae as well as the gene encoding vitellogenin (SfVg) in the female adults. We also found that treatment with LC 30 of cyantraniliprole significantly decreased the whole body levels of glucose, trehalose, glycogen and triglyceride in the larvae. Multiple arthropod pests can affect the same crop in agricultural systems, requiring the integration of control methods. In the present study, the effects of residual exposure to four broad-spectrum insecticides/acaricides (azadiractin, abamectin, chlorfenapyr, and fenpyroximate) on immature (development and survival time) and adult females (longevity, fecundity, and fertility life table parameters) of the predatory mite Neoseiulus barkeri were evaluated. Additionally, the insecticides/acaricides were categorized according to their selectivity based on the classification proposed by the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) for assessing the susceptibility of arthropods in laboratory experiments. Method 004, proposed by the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC), was adopted for the bioassays with predators exposed to insecticide-acaricide residues. Among the insecticides/acaricides studied, azadirachtin had minimal effects on immature and adult N. barkeri (all non-significant) and was considered harmless based on the classification of toxicity according to the standards/categories proposed by the IOBC. Several studies have investigated the consequences of exposure to neonicotinoids in honeybees. Given the lack of studies concerning the consequences of exposure of social wasps to neonicotinoids, as well as the ecological importance of these insects, the objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that chronic exposure to sublethal concentrations of thiamethoxam decreases survival and mobility by causing damage to the brain and midgut of the social wasp Polybia paulista. The wasps were exposed to different concentrations of thiamethoxam, in order to obtain the mean lethal concentration (LC 50 ), which was used as a reference for calculation of two sublethal concentrations (LC 50/100 and LC 50/10 ) employed in subsequent experiments. To calculate survival, groups of exposed (EW) and unexposed (UW) wasps were monitored until death, allowing calculation of the average lethal time. The EW and UW groups were evaluated after 12, 24, 48, and 72 h of exposure, considering their mobility and histopathological parameters of the midgut and brain. A lesion index based on semiquantitative analyses was used for comparison of histopathological damage. The results demonstrated that exposure to the LC 50/10 led to a significantly shorter survival time of the P. paulista workers, compared to unexposed wasps. In addition, both sublethal concentrations decreased mobility and caused damage to the intestine (loss of brush border, presence of spherocrystals, loss of cytoplasmic material, and pyknosis) and the brain (loss of cell contact and pyknosis), regardless of the exposure time. Lethal and sublethal effects of pesticides on nontarget organisms are one of the causes of the current decline of many insect species. However, research in the past decades has focused primarily on pollinators, although other beneficial nontarget organisms such as parasitic wasps may also be affected. We studied the sublethal effects of the four insecticides acetamiprid, dimethoate, flupyradifurone, and sulfoxaflor on pheromone-mediated sexual communication and olfactory host finding of the parasitic wasp Nasonia vitripennis. All agents target cholinergic neurons, which are involved in the processing of chemical information by insects. We applied insecticide doses topically and tested the response of treated wasps to sex pheromones and host-associated chemical cues. In addition, we investigated the mating rate of insecticide-treated wasps. The pheromone response of females surviving insecticide treatment was disrupted by acetamiprid (≥0.63 ng), dimethoate (≥0.105 ng), and flupyradifurone (≥21 ng), whereas sulfoxaflor had no significant effects at the tested doses. Olfactory host finding was affected by all insecticides (acetamiprid ≥1.05 ng, dimethoate ≥0.105 ng, flupyradifurone ≥5.25 ng, sulfoxaflor ≥0.52 ng). Remarkably, females treated with ≥0.21 ng dimethoate even avoided host odor. The mating rate of treated N. vitripennis couples was decreased by acetamiprid (6.3 ng), flupyradifurone (≥2.63 ng), and sulfoxaflor (2.63 ng), whereas dimethoate showed only minor effects. Finally, we determined the amount of artificial nectar consumed by N. vitripennis females within 48 h. Considering this amount (∼2 µL) and the maximum concentrations of the insecticides reported in nectar, tested doses can be considered field-realistic. Our results suggest that exposure of parasitic wasps to field-realistic doses of insecticides targeting the cholinergic system reduces their effectiveness as natural enemies by impairing the olfactory sense. This study aimed to investigate the sublethal effects of thiacloprid on microRNA (miRNA) expression in honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) and the role of a specific miRNA, ame-miR-283-5p, in thiacloprid resistance. The high-throughput small RNA-sequencing was used to analyze global miRNA expression profile changes in honeybees orally exposed to sublethal concentrations of thiacloprid (20 mg/L and 4 mg/L) for 72 h. Thiacloprid at 20 mg/L had no observed adverse effects. In addition, bees were fed with miRNA mimics or inhibitors to increase or decrease ame-miR-283-5p expression, and its effects on P450 gene expression (CYP9Q2 and CYP9Q3) were examined. Thiacloprid susceptibility was also detected. The results showed that treatment with thiacloprid at 20 mg/L and 4 mg/L induced 11 and five differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs), respectively. Bioinformatic analysis suggested that the DEMs are mainly involved in the regulation of growth and development, metabolism, nerve conduction, and behavior. ame-miR-283-5p was downregulated by both concentrations, which was validated using quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR analysis. Enhancing ame-miR-283-5p expression significantly inhibited CYP9Q2 mRNA and protein expression, and increased thiacloprid toxicity, while reducing ame-miR-283-5p expression significantly promoted CYP9Q2 expression, and decreased thiacloprid susceptibility. There in increasing evidence for recent global insect declines. This is of major concern as insects play a critical role in ecosystem functionality and human food security. Even though environmental pollutants are known to reduce insect fertility, their potential effects on insect fitness remain poorly understood - especially for soil-dwelling species. Here, we show that fertility of soil-dwelling beetles, Aethina tumida, is reduced, on average, by half due to field-realistic neonicotinoid soil contaminations. In the laboratory, pupating beetles were exposed via soil to concentrations of the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam that reflect global pollution of agricultural and natural habitats. Emerged adult phenotypes and reproduction were measured, and even the lowest concentration reported from natural habitats reduced subsequent reproduction by 50%. The data are most likely a conservative estimate as the beetles were only exposed during pupation. Since the tested concentrations reflect ubiquitous soil pollution, the data reveal a plausible mechanism for ongoing insect declines. Topical applications of insecticides β-cyfluthrin, imidacloprid, and spinosad in combination with Beauveria bassiana (topical and contact filter paper application) induced synergistic interactions in lesser mealworm larvae, increasing mortality and in some cases numbers of larval cadavers exhibiting conidiogenesis. Reduced concentrations (LC 10 , LC 20 , LC 30 ) of the insecticides induced sublethal effects in lesser mealworm larvae, inhibiting development (mass, head-capsule width, moulting) after eight days' exposure and movement behaviour (area explored and distance travelled) after 3 h' exposure. The most potent synergist was ß-cyfluthrin, it strongly inhibited larval development and movement while significantly increasing mortality and conidiogenesis in B. bassiana-infected larvae. Imidacloprid also strongly inhibited larval development and movement, but only produced weak short-lived synergistic increases in mortality, with no increase in conidiogenesis. Spinosad induced no effect on development and limited effect on movement, but still induced moderate short-lived synergistic increases in mortality and conidiogenesis. Flonicamid is a novel systemic insecticide that efficiently controls sap-sucking insect pests. However, the impact of sublethal concentrations of flonicamid on key demographic parameters and the feeding behavior of greenbug, Schizaphis graminum has not yet been studied. In this study, we used the age stage, two-sex life table approach, and electrical penetration graphs (EPGs) to investigate the sublethal effects of flonicamid on the biological traits and feeding behavior of S. graminum. Bioassays showed that flonicamid possesses high toxicity to adult S. graminum with LC 50 of 5.111 mg L -1 following 48 h exposure. Sublethal concentrations of flonicamid (LC 5 and LC 10 ) significantly decreased the longevity and fecundity of directly exposed parental aphids (F 0 ), while the reproductive days were reduced only at LC 10 . The pre-adult stage and total pre-reproductive period (TPRP) increased in F 1 individuals after exposure of F 0 aphids to the sublethal concentrations of flonicamid. Furthermore, the adult longevity, fecundity and key demographic parameters (R 0 , r, and λ) were significantly reduced in progeny generation (F 1 ). EPG recordings showed that the total duration of phloem sap ingestion and concurrent salivation (E2) decreased substantially in F 0 and F 1 aphids after exposure to LC 5 and LC 10 of flonicamid. Taken together, our results showed that the sublethal concentrations of flonicamid affect the demographic parameters and feeding behavior that ultimately suppress the population growth of S. graminum. The stimulation of biological processes by sublethal doses of insecticides or other stressors is known as hormesis. Here, we have evaluated whether exposure to field-relevant or low concentrations of neonicotinoids induce changes in the reproductive capacity of the bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini (Acari: Acaridae). Among the tested neonicotinoids imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and dinotefuran, the highest hormetic effect on the reproduction of R. robini occurred 24 h after the 48 h exposure period to imidacloprid at concentrations of 70 and 140 mg a.i./L. Despite the stimulating effects of imidacloprid on mite reproduction, no significant differences were observed in the offspring (F 1 ) for biological aspects including egg hatch rate, embryonic period and sex ratio, while an increase was found in the duration of development time from egg to adult. Evaluation of the detoxification enzyme activities of treated adults showed that the highest activity of carboxyl/cholinesterases, cytochrome P450s, and glutathione S-transferases was obtained when exposed to 70, 140 and 70 mg a.i./L imidacloprid, immediately after the exposure period, respectively. Also, an increase in the activity of the antioxidant enzyme catalase was observed compared to that of the control. After imidacloprid pretreatment (140 mg a.i./L), the tolerance of adult mites to diazinon was increased about two-fold. Fipronil (Fpl), an insecticide belonging to the class of phenylpyrazoles, is associated with the widespread mortality of pollinator insects worldwide. Based on studies carried out on residual concentrations of Fpl commonly found in the environment, in this study, we evaluated the sublethal effects of Fpl on behavior and other neurophysiological parameters using the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea as a biological model. Sublethal doses of Fpl (0.1-0.001 μg g-1) increased the time spent grooming and caused dose-dependent inhibition of exploratory activity, partial neuromuscular blockade in vivo and irreversible negative cardiac chronotropism. Fpl also disrupted learning and olfactory memory formation at all doses tested. These results provide the first evidence that short-term exposure to sublethal concentrations of Fpl can significantly disrupt insect behavior and physiology, including olfactory memory. It is well known that sublethal dose of insecticides induces life history trait changes of both target and non-target insect species, however, the underlying mechanisms remain not well understood. In this study, the effects of low concentrations of the anthranilic diamide insecticide chlorantraniliprole on the development and reproduction of the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, were evaluated, and the underlying mechanisms were explored. The results showed that exposure of FAW to LC 10 and LC 30 chlorantraniliprole prolonged the larvae duration, decreased the mean weight of the larvae and pupae, and lowered the pupation rate as well as emergence rate. The fecundity of female adults was also negatively affected by treatment with low concentrations of chlorantraniliprole. Consistently, we found that exposure of FAW to LC 30 chlorantraniliprole downregulated the mRNA expression of juvenile hormone (JH) esterase (SfJHE), leading to the increase of JH titer in larvae. We also found that treatment with low concentrations of chlorantraniliprole suppressed the expression of ribosomal protein S6 kinase1 (SfS6K1) in female adults, resulting in the downregulation of the gene encoding vitellogenin (SfVg). Pesticide residues have serious environmental impacts on rice-based ecosystems. In rice fields, Chironomus kiiensis and Chironomus javanus provide alternative food sources to predatory natural enemies of rice insect pests, especially when pests are low. Chlorantraniliprole is a substitute for older classes of insecticides and has been used extensively to control rice pests. To determine the ecological risks of chlorantraniliprole in rice fields, we evaluated its toxic effects on certain growth, biochemical and molecular parameters in these two chironomids. The toxicity tests were performed by exposing third-instar larvae to a range of concentrations of chlorantraniliprole. LC 50 values at 24 h, 48 h, and 10 days showed that chlorantraniliprole was more toxic to C. javanus than to C. kiiensis. Chlorantraniliprole significantly prolonged the larval growth duration, inhibited pupation and emergence, and decreased egg numbers of C. kiiensis and C. javanus at sublethal dosages (LC 10 = 1.50 mg/L and LC 25 = 3.00 mg/L for C. kiiensis; LC 10 = 0.25 mg/L and LC 25 = 0.50 mg/L for C. javanus). Sublethal exposure to chlorantraniliprole significantly decreased the activity of the detoxification enzymes carboxylesterase (CarE) and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) in both C. kiiensis and C. javanus. Sublethal exposure to chlorantraniliprole also markedly inhibited the activity of the antioxidant enzyme peroxidase (POD) in C. kiiensis and POD and catalase (CAT) in C. javanus. Expression levels of 12 genes revealed that detoxification and antioxidant abilities were affected by sublethal exposures to chlorantraniliprole. There were significant changes in the expression levels of seven genes (CarE6, CYP9AU1, CYP6FV2, GSTo1, GSTs1, GSTd2, and POD) in C. kiiensis and ten genes (CarE6, CYP9AU1, CYP6FV2, GSTo1, GSTs1, GSTd2, GSTu1, GSTu2, CAT, and POD) in C. javanus. Spodoptera litura is a damaging and notorious insect pest of agricultural crops that has developed resistance to various insecticides. Broflanilide is a novel pesticide with a unique mode of action that displays high efficiency against lepidopterous larvae. We here determined the baseline susceptibility of a laboratory strain of S . litura to broflanilide and 10 other popular insecticides. Furthermore, we measured susceptibility and cross-resistance using three common insecticides in 11 field-collected S . litura populations. Broflanilide caused the highest toxicity among all tested insecticides, with the laboratory strain and all field-collected populations showing high susceptibility. Moreover, no cross-resistance was detected between broflanilide and the other tested insecticides. We subsequently evaluated the sublethal effects of broflanilide and found that treatment with the 25% lethal concentration (LC 25 ) prolonged the development duration in the larvae, reduced the pupation rate and pupae weight, and decreased egg hatchability. Finally, the activities of three detoxifying enzymes were measured in S . litura after treatment with the LC 25 dose. The results suggested that enhanced cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450) activity could be involved in broflanilide detoxification. Overall, these findings demonstrate the strong toxicity and significant sublethal effects of broflanilide in S . litura and suggest that increased P450 activity may be associated with broflanilide detoxification.

The codling moth Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a major invasive pest of pome fruits and walnuts worldwide. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT) and abamectin (AM) have been frequently used in C. pomonella control, but control of this pest is very difficult because shortly after hatching, larvae of this insect bore tunnels and hide inside host plant fruit. In this study, a simulated field spray bioassay method was developed against neonate larvae of C. pomonella and concentration-response bioassays were conducted to evaluate the susceptibility of the neonate larvae to LCT and AM. Exposure of neonate larvae to sublethal concentration (LC 30 ) of LCT or AM significantly reduced the survival rate of larvae (4th and 5th instars), lowered the mean weight of larvae and pupae, and decreased the daily maximal number of eggs laid and the total number of eggs laid (fecundity) per female. The sublethal effects, including reduced body mass, mean fecundity and net reproductive rate, extended mean generation time, and shortened oviposition period, were also found in transgenerational offspring. Furthermore, the transgenerational maternal effects were more obvious for AM than LCT, in comparison to the control. Additionally, the estimated population size was decreased by exposure to LC 30 of LCT and AM, and the observed reduction of fecundity and population size within and across generations was likely the result of the downregulation of the reproduction-related vitellogenin gene (CpVg) after exposure to LC 30 of LCT and AM. The present study aimed to evaluate insecticide toxicity to Doru luteipes (Scudder), a major predator of maize pests. Lethal and sublethal effects were assessed on nymphs and adults exposed to the insecticides through contact (maize leaves) and ingestion (prey eggs) routes. Tested insecticides included a biopesticide (Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus, SfMNPV), modern (flubendiamide and metaflumizone), and older neurotoxins (imidacloprid + β-cyfluthrin). The imidacloprid/β-cyfluthrin mix was highly toxic (100% mortality) to the predator, regardless of the exposure route and predator stage. Metaflumizone caused mortality higher than 95% and 45% of nymphs and adults. Flubendiamide and SfMNPV were the least toxic insecticides, not differing from the untreated control in any of the assessed endpoints. Adult tibial length did not differ among treatments. Metaflumizone impaired egg consumption by nymphs and walking distance of adult D. luteipes. Overall, the insecticides caused a more pronounced effect on D. luteipes nymphs than on adults and were more toxic by the contact route. Neonicotinoid insecticides represent nearly a quarter of the global insecticide market and are widely used in agriculture but also for lawn, garden care, and pest control. They are highly water-soluble, persistent in soil, may enter the aquatic compartment via spray drift, runoff, or leaching, and contribute to downstream aquatic toxicity. Although insects appear to be the most sensitive group to neonicotinoids, other groups, such as crustaceans, may also be affected. Furthermore, most studies focus on single-insecticide exposure and very little is known concerning the impact of neonicotinoid mixtures on aquatic invertebrates. The present study was designed to test potential toxicological effects of an environmentally relevant mixture of imidacloprid, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam on populations of Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia magna under controlled conditions. Chronic toxicity tests were conducted in the laboratory, and survival and reproduction were measured for both species under environmentally relevant, 'worst-case' concentrations for each compound separately and in combination as pesticides are often detected as mixtures in aquatic environments. The neonicotinoids did not appear to affect the survival of C. dubia and D. magna. Reproduction of C. dubia was affected by the mixture whereas all three individual insecticides as well as the mixture caused a significant reduction in the reproduction of D. magna. Exposure to sublethal doses of insecticide may affect biological traits in triatomines. We investigated the effects of toxicological phenotype (pyrethroid resistance status) and exposure to sublethal doses of deltamethrin on two traits of Triatoma infestans Klug (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) using a phenotypic plasticity experimental design. First-instar nymphs from 14 and 10 full-sib families from pyrethroid-susceptible and pyrethroid-resistant populations, respectively, were used. For the susceptible population, we treated first instars topically with acetone (control) or deltamethrin (treatment) once. For the resistant population, instars were treated once, twice and three times as first, third or fifth-instar nymphs, respectively. We measured cuticle thickness, wing size and wing shape of 484 emerging adults, and tested for treatment effects using mixed ANOVA and MANOVA models. Toxicological phenotype, exposure to deltamethrin and full-sib family exerted significant effects on cuticle thickness, wing size and wing shape. Adult triatomines previously treated with deltamethrin developed significantly thicker cuticles than control triatomines only in the resistant population and significantly bigger wings in both populations. Mean cuticle thickness and wing size increased with increasing exposures to deltamethrin. Mosquito management programs rely basically on the use of conventional synthetic larvicides. However, frequent applications and misuse of some synthetic insecticides have led to problems related to mosquito resistance development, harmful effects on human health and unacceptable environmental effects on non-target organisms. Recently, a growing number of phytochemicals has been tested as more eco-friendly larvicides against various mosquito species, exerting high efficacy with multiple modes of action. In the laboratory, we investigated for the first time the sublethal effects of oregano oil and its major compound carvacrol, against Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito), a mosquito of great medical importance. We determined the effects of short term (24h) exposure of 3rd- 4th larvae to LC 50 concentrations on survival and development of survived larvae until adulthood, as well as on fecundity, fertility, longevity and wing length of emerged adults. Only half of 24h survived larvae from oregano oil and carvacrol treatment finally reached adulthood. Abnormal shapes of dead larvae and pupae, and failed adult emergence were also observed, indicating a potential growth inhibitory activity of the tested materials. No particular effects from exposure to larvicidal LC 50 concentrations were recorded on life cycle parameters of successfully emerged adults. These findings suggest the tested oregano oil and carvacrol as sufficiently effective larvicides against Ae. albopictus at lower than the acutely toxic concentrations, promoting a more eco-friendly and less costly profile for these biopesticides., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Bemisia tabaci is a threat to agriculture worldwide because of its potential to cause devastating damage to various crops. β-asarone is a bioactive pesticidal chemical originating from Acorus calamus (or "Sweet Flag") plants, and it displays significant lethal effects against insect pests. In this study, we established a baseline of susceptibility to β-asarone from China and patterns of cross-resistance to other popular insecticides. We found that all the 12 field-collected B. tabaci populations exhibited high susceptibility to β-asarone, and there was no cross-resistance detected for other tested insecticides. We subsequently evaluated the sublethal effects of β-asarone on physiology and biochemistry via LC 25 treatment (4.7 mg/L). LC 25 of β-asarone resulted in prolonged developmental duration and decreased survival rates in B. tabaci nymphs, pseudopupae, and adults. Significant reductions in oviposition duration, fecundity, and hatchability were also observed. Additionally, the metabolic enzyme activity and expression profiles of selected cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450) genes following the LC 25 treatment of β-asarone suggest that enhanced detoxification via P450s could be involved in the observed sublethal effects. With low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition, insecticide-induced hormesis, a biphasic phenomenon, can contribute to pest resurgence. The cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora (Koch) (Homoptera: Aphididae), is a vital insect that infests legume crops. Its hormesis of flupyradifurone has not been previously established. Age-stage two-sex life analysis is used to investigate the sublethal and transgenerational effects of flupyradifurone on two successive generations of A. craccivora. A leaf-dip bioassay method revealed high toxicity of flupyradifurone against A. craccivora, with lethal concentration 50% value (LC 50 ) of 1.82 mg L -1 after 48 h exposure. Treatment of parent generation (F 0 ) with LC 10 and LC 25 of flupyradifurone significantly increased the longevity and fecundity of the directly exposed adults. The results of transgenerational effects showed that the treatment of (F 0 ) with LC 25 induced significant hormetic effects in progeny generation (F 1 ). Furthermore, flupyradifurone at LC 25 significantly enhanced the biological traits, such as intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), and net reproductive rate (R 0 ) compared with the control. Similarly, both LC 10 and LC 25 induced a significant increase in the mean generation time T (d). Conversely, both treatments caused a significant decrease in the doubling time (DT). Data in the present study demonstrate that the exposure of (F 0 ) to flupyradifurone at LC 10 and LC 25 enhanced longevity and fecundity in the directly exposed adults of A. craccivora, and induced transgenerational hormesis across the subsequent (F 1 ) generation. Background: Pesticides can be noxious to non-target beneficial arthropods and their negative effects have been recently recognized even at low doses. The predator Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) (Hemiptera: Miridae) plays an important role in controlling insect pests in solanaceous crops, but its concurrent herbivory often poses relevant concerns for tomato production. Although insecticide side effects on N. tenuis have been previously studied, little is known on the potential implications of neurotoxic chemicals at low concentrations. We assessed the baseline toxicity of three neurotoxic insecticides (lambda-cyhalothrin, spinosad and chlorpyrifos) on N. tenuis by topical contact exposure. The behavioral and reproduction capacity of the predator was then investigated upon exposure to three estimated low-lethal concentrations (LC 1 , LC 10 and LC 30 )., Results: Predator survival varied among insecticides and concentrations, with LC 30 /label rate ratios ranging from 8.45% to 65.40% for spinosad and lambda-cyhalothrin, respectively. All insecticides reduced the fertility of N. tenuis females at all estimated low-lethal concentrations. Chlorpyrifos seriously compromised predator orientation towards a host plant even at LC 1 , while the same effect was observed for lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad solely at LC 30 . Lambda-cyhalothrin (at all concentrations) and chlorpyrifos (at LC 10 and LC 30 ) also affected the time taken by N. tenuis females to make a choice., Conclusion: The results indicate that all three insecticides can be detrimental to N. tenuis and should be avoided when presence of the predator is desirable. © 2022 The Authors. Pesticide risk-assessment guidelines for honeybees (Apis mellifera) generally require determining the acute toxicity of a chemical over the short-term through fix-duration tests. However, potential long-lasting or delayed effects resulting from an acute exposure (e.g. a single dose) are often overlooked, although the modification of a developmental process may have life-long consequences. To investigate this question, we exposed young honeybee workers to a single sublethal field-realistic dose of a neurotoxic pesticide, sulfoxaflor, at one of two amounts (16 or 60 ng), at the moment when they initiated orientation flights (preceding foraging activity). We then tracked in the field their flight activity and lifespan with automated life-long monitoring devices. Both amounts of sulfoxaflor administered reduced the total number of flights but did not affect bee survival and flight duration. When looking at the time series of flight activity, effects were not immediate but delayed until foraging activity with a decrease in the daily number of foraging flights and consequently in their total number (24 and 33% less for the 16 and 60 ng doses, respectively). In aphids, hormesis and symbiotic bacteria are the drivers for the development of pesticide resistance. However, the related mechanism remains unclear. Here, we evaluated the sublethal and transgenerational effects of the extensively used pyrethroid pesticide deltamethrin (DMT) on the population dynamics in Aphis gossypii and tested its influence on symbiotic bacterial communities. The leaf-dip bioassay revealed that DMT was highly toxic to A. gossypii , and at a low lethal concentration of DMT, the intrinsic ( r ) and finite rates of increase (λ) of the initially exposed aphids (G0) significantly decreased. Intriguingly, the r , λ, and net reproductive rate ( R 0 ) of G1 and G2 significantly increased, but the r and λ decreased in G3. The adult and total preoviposition period increased in G3 but decreased in G4. Additionally, the diversity of the bacterial community decreased, while the abundance values of Buchnera , Pseudomonadaceae, and Burkholderiaceae increased after 24 h of exposure to LC 30 DMT in G0 aphids, and the latter two decreased in G1 but increased in G2. In summary, sublethal DMT has intergenerational hormesis effect on cotton aphids in G1-G2 and remarkably altered their symbiotic bacterial community and abundance. These results broaden our understanding of the relationship of hormesis and symbiotic bacteria in aphids under insecticide exposure.

Within the framework of biocontrol development, several natural lipopeptides produced by Bacillus subtilis show well-documented anti-microbial properties, especially in orchards. However, the number of studies on their putative insecticidal effects remain low despite the growing interest to develop new strategies of orchards pests' control. The rosy apple aphid Dysaphis plantaginea is the major aphid pest causing great leaf damage to apple trees. In this study, we submitted young adult aphids to topical application of three different families of lipopeptides, Plipastatin (Fengycin), Mycosubtilin (Iturin), and Surfactin, either separately or as a ternary mixture. Their aphicidal effects were investigated at 1, 2.5 and 5 g/L, both at 1 h and 24 h after exposure, and their effects on aphid behavior were studied at the 2.5 g/L concentration at 24 h after exposure. When delivered alone, lipopeptides displayed contrasted effects varying from no aphicidal activity for Mycosubtilin to a mortality induced even at low concentrations by Surfactin. Surprisingly, locomotor activity of the surviving aphids was only affected by the two least lethal treatments, Mycosubtilin and the ternary mix. Their feeding behavior was only impacted by Surfactin, the most lethal treatment, that unexpectedly increased phloem sap ingestion. Bumblebees can be exposed to neonicotinoid pesticides through nectar and pollen collected from treated crops, which can cause lethal and sublethal effects in these nontarget pollinators. However, the body distribution of the compound after exposure to neonicotinoids in bumblebees is not well studied. Bumblebee colonies (Bombus terrestris, n = 20) were exposed to field-realistic concentrations of clothianidin through artificial nectar (3.6-13 µg/L) for 9 d. Comparison of the nominal with the measured exposure in nectar indicated good compliance, confirming the applicability of the method. When quantified, clothianidin showed a concentration-dependent occurrence in the head and body of workers (head: <0.2-2.17 µg/kg; body: <0.2-3.17 µg/kg), and in the body of queens (<0.2-2.49 µg/kg), although concentrations were below those measured in the nectar (bioaccumulation factor = 0.2). Exposure to clothianidin did not affect mortality nor brood production, nor did it have a statistically significant effect on nectar consumption and size of food storage. However, visual inspection suggests higher nectar consumption of nectar with low clothianidin content compared with nectar with no or high clothianidin content. Our results show that dietary clothianidin is taken up in bumblebees, but does not bioaccumulate to elevated levels compared with exposure. Still, clothianidin may elicit responses that affect feeding behavior of the pollinator B. terrestris, although our endpoints were not significantly affected. Despite being effective in controlling mosquito larvae and a few other target organisms, the application of insecticides into aquatic systems may cause unintended alterations to the physiology or behavioral responses of several aquatic non-target organisms, which can ultimately lead to their death. Here, we firstly evaluated whether the susceptibility of the giant water bug, Belostoma anurum (Hemiptera: Belostomatidae), a predator of mosquito larvae, to pyriproxyfen would be similar to that of its potential prey, larvae of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). Secondly, we recorded the nominal concentrations of pyriproxyfen in water and evaluated whether sublethal exposures would lead to physiological or behavioral alterations on the B. anurum nymphs. We characterized the activities of three major families of detoxification enzymes (i.e., cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, glutathione-S-transferase, and general esterases) and further evaluated the abilities of pyriproxyfen sublethally-exposed B. anurum to prey upon A. aegypti larvae at different prey densities. Our findings revealed that nominal pyriproxyfen concentration significantly decreased (approximately 50%) over the first 24 h. Furthermore, when applied at the concentration of 10 μg a.i./L, pyriproxyfen was approximately four times more toxic to A. aegypti larvae (LT 50  = 48 h) than to B. anurum nymphs (LT 50  = 192 h). Interestingly, the pyriproxyfen sublethally-exposed (2.5 μg a.i./L) B. anurum nymphs exhibited reduced enzyme activities (cytochrome P450 monooxygenases) involved in detoxication processes and preyed significantly less on A. aegypti larvae when compared to unexposed predators. Insecticides are extensively used worldwide to kill insect pests, yet organisms are most often exposed to insecticides at sublethal concentrations. Our understanding of sublethal effects on life histories is needed to predict the impact of insecticides on population dynamics and improve insecticide use and pest control. Sublethal concentrations can impact life histories directly and indirectly through changes in the intraspecific competition. Yet, few studies have evaluated the sublethal effects on intraspecific competition and these do not disentangle the insecticide effects on interference competition versus exploitative competition. As such, sublethal effects on the relative contribution of each pathways in shaping life histories are largely unknown, despite the fact that this can impact population dynamics. In this study, we focused on the neurotoxic insecticide spinosad and investigated its sublethal effects on interference among the aggressive larvae of the tortrix moth Adoxophyes honmai and the consequences for life histories. We conducted a set of paired experiments to disentangle the insecticide effects on interference from the ones on exploitation. Spinosad was found to amplify interference with most effects on mortality which lets us suggest that the insecticide likely increases the level of aggressive interactions resulting in more conspecific killings (e.g. cannibalism). Spinosad exposure was found to impair movement ability. Less movements may increase susceptibility to conspecific attacks and or increase aggresivity for better defence, two plausible mechanisms that could explain the increase in interference with insecticide. This study shows that insecticide at sublethal concentration can impact life histories by altering the strength of interference competition. Many organisms (pest and non-target species) compete through interference and theory predicts that a change in interference can substantially change dynamics. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is one of the most important pests in tropical and subtropical regions of American. S. frugiperda was first detected in Southern China in January 2019, and then subsequently invaded in 26 provinces. Spinetoram widely used for pest management is recommended for S. frugiperda control. The sublethal effects of spinetoram on S. frugiperda were investigated in the present study. The toxicity of spinetoram against S. frugiperda larvae was determined after one oral dose of spinetoram at sublethal concentration. The results showed that spinetoram LC10 and LC30 were 0.011 and 0.044 mg/liter for the larvae, respectively. Spinetoram at sublethal concentration significantly increased developmental time but reduced larval body weight. In addition, spinetoram had a post-exposure effect on pupal weight, but not on pupal duration, pupation rate, emergence rate, eggs number, or adults longevity. In conclusion, the sublethal effects of spinetoram could negatively affect the growth and development of S. frugiperda that have important implications for pest management., (© The Author(s) 2021. Bradysia odoriphaga is a major insect pest that infests Chinese chive in northern China. Clothianidin is a second-generation neonicotinoid insecticide that is commonly used against B. odoriphaga. In this study, the effect of sublethal clothianidin concentrations (LC 5 and LC 10 ) on key biological characteristics of B. odoriphaga was investigated using an age-stage, two-sex life table method. Bioassays results showed that clothianidin exhibited high toxicity against B. odoriphaga with LC 50 of 1.898 mg L -1 following 24 h exposure. The developmental duration of larvae was significantly increased when exposed to the LC 5 (0.209 mg L -1 ) and LC 10 (0.340 mg L -1 ) of clothianidin. No significant effects were observed on the pupal stage, adult pre-oviposition period (APOP), total pre-oviposition period (TPOP), and mean longevities of male and female. The oviposition period and fecundity of B. odoriphaga were reduced in clothianidin-treated groups. Moreover, key demographic parameters, including the intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), and net reproductive rate (R 0 ), were significantly decreased by the LC 5 and LC 10 of clothianidin, while no effects were noted on mean generation time (T). Overall, this study showed that sublethal concentrations of clothianidin have a detrimental effect on B. odoriphaga developmental period, fecundity, and life table parameters.
