Humpback leading-edge (LE) tubercles are applied to the cavitation control of hydrofoils, and the effect of LE tubercles on hydrofoil cavitation characteristics under different cavitation numbers (σ) is discussed. The results show that LE tubercles can promote hydrofoil initial cavitation, with cavitation appearing first in the groove. This is because the separation effect of LE tubercles induces flow from peak to trough, resulting in an accelerated flow rate and a local low-pressure area. The quasiperiodic properties of the cloud-cavitation stage are not improved, but LE tubercles considerably reduced hydrofoil cavitation, resulting in a cavitation volume reduction of roughly 16.5%–20.4% and maximum cavitation volume reduction of roughly 10.5%–21.8%. The flow field at the tubercle was analyzed, and it was found that vortex cavitation was induced by the spiral vortex. The pressure pulsation on the hydrofoil is highly related to the cavitating evolution. The dominant frequency of the pressure pulsation increases with the decrease of σ and is not affected by the LE tubercles. Finally, LE tubercles are observed to facilitate the transformation of laminar flow to turbulent flow, hence increasing wake disturbance and facilitating the disintegration of the wake vortex structure. In Japan today, aging infrastructures such as dams and bridges are becoming an issue. We considered that the use of a hydrofoil multicopter would be an effective method for inspecting and surveying such facilities. When using a hydrofoil multicopter, it is possible to take off from the shore, land on the water, and dive without using a ship. The aircraft developed in this study has the capability to communicate with the land. The aircraft developed in this study is equipped with a communication buoy, and after landing on the water, a communication cable is extended from the buoy to enable underwater maneuvering via wired communication. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of a passive control method on the leading stability of a cloud cavity around a hydrofoil. Two differently positioned micro vortex generators (mVG) are installed on the leading edge (LE) of a National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 66 hydrofoil. The structural parameters of mVG-1 are the same as those of mVG-2, but closer to the LE of the hydrofoil. A high-speed camera is employed to capture the transient evolution of cavitating flow. The results show that the cloud cavities on the baseline hydrofoil are divided into the hybrid cavity mode (α = 6°) and the fingerlike cavity mode (α = 8°–12°), relying on the cavity LE structure. The hybrid cavity consists of coupled traveling bubbles and fingerlike cavities, dominated by fingerlike cavities. The fingerlike cavity is attached to cavities with only a single form of LE. The hybrid cavity is replaced by fingerlike vortex cavitation on the mVG hydrofoil, leading to a fixed incipient position of the cavity. Fingerlike cavity structures on the three hydrofoils are generated by different mechanisms. The fingerlike vortex cavity of the mVG-1 hydrofoil is induced by the mVG, whereas the other two hydrofoils are induced by boundary layer separation and spanwise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to investigate the influence of plasma actuation on cavitation in the flow field around a hydrofoil, the RNG k-ε turbulence model with density correction, the Schnerr--Sauer cavitation model, and the plasma phenomenological model were used to analyze the influence of forward and reverse plasma actuation on the cavitation characteristics of the NACA66(MOD) hydrofoil at an angle of attack of 8. The cavitation number of the incoming flow was 0.99. The results showed that under the positive excitation condition, the cavitation volume on the suction side of the hydrofoil was reduced by about 30%, and the time-averaged lift--drag ratio was reduced by about 5%, which had little influence on the reentrant jet, vortex and shear flow. Therefore, the cavitation suppression effect on the hydrofoil flow field was weak. Under the condition of reverse actuation, the volume of cavitation on the suction side of the hydrofoil was reduced by about 87%, and the time-averaged lift--drag ratio was increased by about 21%, which effectively worsened the development conditions of cavitation. By greatly reducing the intensity of the re-entrant jet and eliminating the vortex and shear flow in the flow field, cavitation in the hydrofoil flow field was obviously suppressed. To investigate the influence of the chord length and frequency of an oscillating hydrofoil device on the discharge characteristics of floating particulate matter, in this study, we take raceway aquaculture as an example and systematically compare and analyze the flow field characteristics of the hydrofoil device with different chord lengths and frequencies, as well as the sewage discharge performance of the raceway based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The results indicate that in the particulate matter discharge process of raceway aquaculture, when the chord length and motion frequency of the hydrofoil device are 0.1 W (W is the width of the raceway) and 1.0 Hz, respectively, the anti-Karman vortex streets produced by the hydrofoil device are less affected by the wall, the flow field is the most uniform, the particulate matter discharge performance is the best, and the final floating particulate matter discharge rate reaches up to 99.09%. Adjusting the chord length of the hydrofoil can effectively ameliorate flow field reflux issues, enhancing the uniformity and flow performance of the flow field. When the chord length is 0.1 W, the uniformity of the flow field is optimal. When the chord length is 0.2 W, the flow performance of the flow field is superior. Increasing the frequency enhances the flow performance of the flow field, with an average increase of 0.1 Hz in motion frequency leading to a 19.42% improvement in the average velocity at the outlet. Based on this, we recommend the use of a hydrofoil device with a chord length of 0.1 W and a motion frequency of 1.0 Hz in the raceway aquaculture system to achieve optimal particulate matter discharge performance, providing a theoretical basis and practical guidance for using hydrofoil devices to improve the efficiency of floating particulate matter treatment in raceway aquaculture environments. Hydrofoil trailing edge shape directly influences its downstream flow state. Due to the non-streamlined shape, alternating vortices will form downstream, resulting in complex pressure pulsations. Different shapes of the trailing edge lead to varying pressure pulsations downstream. In this paper, four different trailing edge shapes were selected for numerical simulation based on the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 0009 hydrofoil. The main difference lies in trimming one side of the trailing edge to different degrees, making it asymmetrical. Large Eddy Simulation was used and the results were accurate. The optimized multivariate variational mode decomposition was used to extract and reconstruct effective components of pressure pulsation in the flow, and satisfactory reconstruction results were obtained. This combined method effectively identifies key components influencing flow field and enables reasonable reconstruction. Results show that shedding vortices on both sides of an asymmetric hydrofoil's tailing edge exhibit noticeable differences in morphology. Pressure pulsation distribution in the trailing-edge flow field was primarily influenced by components near vortex-shedding frequency. With the deepening of the asymmetric trimming degree, the pressure pulsation influenced by this component on that side is gradually weakened, but the energy peak of pressure pulsation in the flow field is less reduced. The cavitation phenomenon not only reduces hydrodynamic performance but also generates vibrations and noise, significantly compromising the operational stability of the system. In this study, we investigate the efficiency of air injection in controlling cavitation patterns and reducing noise on hydrofoil, both experimentally and numerically. The focus is to assess how the location of air injection on the suction side of the hydrofoil, the rate of air injection, and the cavitation number affect the cavitating flow. The hydrofoil has a span and chord length (C) of 100 mm. The air is injected from a column of multi-holes positioned at x/C = 0.05, 0.10, 0.30, and 0.40 separately and controlled through a flow meter. The cavitation number ranges from 3.65 to 1.62, while the air injection rates are set at 1, 3, and 5 standard liters per minute. The experiments are conducted at Chungnam National University's high-speed cavitating tunnel. Simultaneously, a high-speed camera is used to observe cavitating flow, and a pressure transducer is employed to measure noise levels. The results indicate that injecting air closer to the leading edge has the most significant impact on reducing vapor cavitation and noise. Injecting air at x/C = 0.05 reduces the length of the vapor sheet cavity by 27% compared to cases without air injection. Increasing the air injection rate increased the volume of ventilated cavitation. Noise reduction is primarily noticeable in the high-frequency region (>2 kHz) at a high cavitation number of 2.22. As the cavitation number decreases to 1.62, the noise reduction shifts mainly to the low-frequency region, and the effectiveness of air injection in suppressing noise is reduced. This paper gives, in the limit of infinite Froude number, a closed-form, analytical solution for steady, two-dimensional, irrotational, infinite-depth, free-surface, attached flow over a submerged tandem cascade of hydrofoils for arbitrary angle of attack, depth of submergence and interfoil separation. The multiply connected flow domain is conformally mapped to a concentric annulus in an auxiliary plane. The complex flow potential and its derivative, the complex velocity, are obtained in the auxiliary plane by considering their form at known special points in the flow and the required conformal mapping is determined by explicit integration, allowing accurate evaluation of various flow quantities including the lift on each foil. The circulation around the foils causes the foil array to act as a row of point vortices, or a shear layer, and so, for positive angles of attack, the flow speed at the free surface can substantially exceed the speed at depth, with the speeds simply related through the lift coefficient. Decreasing the interfoil separation decreases the disturbance to the free surface and greatly increases the lift per hydrofoil, thus allowing for the shallower operation of a hydrofoil array than of an isolated foil for a given lift requirement. Further, the flow over a hydrofoil array approaches its infinite depth form significantly more rapidly than that over an isolated foil. In contrast to the infinite-submergence case where a through-array flow can be imposed, in the finite submergence case, periodicity and the presence of the free surface mean that there is no net flow between the foils. Cavitation is a prevalent phenomenon within the domain of ship and ocean engineering, predominantly occurring in the tail flow fields of high-speed rotating propellers and on the surfaces of high-speed underwater vehicles. The re-entrant jet and compression wave resulting from the collapse of cavity vapour are pivotal factors contributing to cavity instability. Concurrently, these phenomena significantly modulate the evolution of cavitation flow. In this paper, numerical investigations into cloud cavitation over a Clark-Y hydrofoil were conducted, utilizing the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method within the OpenFOAM framework. Comparative analysis of results obtained at different angles of attack is undertaken. A discernible augmentation in cavity thickness is observed concomitant with the escalation in attack angle, alongside a progressive intensification in pressure at the leading edge of the hydrofoil, contributing to the suction force. The rapid acquisition of flow field characterization information is crucial for closed-loop active flow control. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method is a widely used flow field downscaling modeling method to obtain flow characteristics effectively. Based on the POD method, a flow field reduced-order model (ROM) is constructed in this paper for the flow field control of a hydrofoil of a blended-wing-body underwater glider (BWB-UG) with stabilized suction and blowing forces. Compared with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, the computational time required to predict the target flow field using the established POD-ROM is only about 0.1 s, which is significantly less than the CFD simulation time. The average relative error of the predicted surface pressure is not more than 6.9%. These results confirm the accuracy and efficiency of the POD-ROM in reconstructing flow characteristics. In this research, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches using ANSYS Fluent solver was employed to evaluate new designs of the delta-shaped bladed Darrieus hydrokinetic turbines (DHKT) employing NACA0012 hydrofoils. The 2-bladed models with four different designs (MD1-MD4) of varying blade characteristics and cross-sectional areas were simulated. The models were positioned fully submerged inside a water flow domain and were forced to rotate with different rotational speeds by utilizing the sliding mesh technique under a constant upstream velocity of 1.5 m/s. The results using a Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model were compared with previous studies. The optimum model designs were shown to be the models with twisted blades and reduced and constant cross-sectional areas (MD3 and MD4). The 3-bladed models with similar blade characteristics (MD7 and MD8) were continuously tested and compared with the 2-bladed models. The 2-bladed models performed better during the higher range of tip speed ratio (λ), whereas 3-bladed models were outstanding at the lower range. In order to improve the propulsive performance of the existing pure heaving motion hydrofoil, the effect of varying stiffness ratio K *, damping ratio C * and inertia ratio J * on the propulsive efficiency of the semi-active NACA 0012 hydrofoil is systematically investigated by using the combination of CFD, Taguchi method and neural network. The results show that the passive pitching motion can significantly affect the propulsive performance of the hydrofoil. Compared to the pure heaving hydrofoil, the propulsive efficiency of the optimized semi-active hydrofoil can be improved by up to 20.97%. Further analysis reveals that the passive pitching motion can weaken the strength of the vortex around the hydrofoil, thus reducing the thrust and lift force on the hydrofoil, which results less power consumed by the active heaving motion of the hydrofoil. Although the thrust coefficient is reduced, the energy consumed by the passive pitching hydrofoil is reduced more, which leads a higher propulsive efficiency of the semi-active hydrofoil. In the present study, the effects of surface slip on the hydrodynamics and flow around a two-dimensional National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 0012 hydrofoil are systematically investigated by numerical methods. The objective is to fully understand the effects of surface slip on the streamlined body. Three slip positions (both surfaces, the upper surface, the lower surface) and eight slip lengths (in a wide range from 1 to 500 μm) under 0°–10° angles of attack are fully investigated at a moderate Reynolds number of 1.0 × 106. Surface slip has been found to increase lift and reduce drag by postponing the flow transition, laminar separation bubble, and flow separation on the hydrofoil surface under both surfaces and the upper surface slip conditions. Slip has also been found to induce upshift of the mean velocity profile, decrease the displacement thickness, and mitigate the turbulent kinetic energy in the flow field. However, counterintuitive phenomenon occurs under the lower surface slip condition, where the total drag of the hydrofoil is increased compared to that under the no slip condition. Total drag increase is found mainly due to the increase in the pressure drag under small slip lengths and relatively large angles of attack. Flow maps demonstrating the complex interaction between different surface slip conditions and the flow field are further presented. The results suggest that surface slip can not only reduce drag, but also increase the drag of the streamlined body, which shall provide valuable insights for practical applications of slippery materials. We experimentally investigated a passive cavitation control approach to control partial and cloud cavitation on a National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 0015 hydrofoil. For this approach, we implemented two different kinds of mesoscale bio-inspired riblets, known as scalloped riblets and sawtooth riblets, on the suction side of the hydrofoil near its leading edge. We studied the dynamics of partial and cloud cavitation on the hydrofoil with and without two kinds of riblets using a high-speed camera. In addition, we performed hydro-acoustic measurements to analyze the effects of this passive control on the cavitation induced noise in the wake of the hydrofoils. We considered flows at Reynolds numbers 0.5 × 106 and 0.6 × 106 with the hydrofoils at angles of attack of 8° and 10°. Results revealed that the cloud cavitation shedding on the hydrofoil suction surface was mitigated significantly due to the reduction in the re-entrant jet momentum. Also, the influence of tip vortex cavitation was reduced on the modified hydrofoils. Furthermore, the large-scale cavitation induced noise for the unmodified hydrofoil was located mostly at lower frequency in the range of 30 Hz, which was similar to the cavity shedding frequency. The small-scale vortex-induced noise concentrated at relative higher frequency between 100 and 120 Hz. The noise reduction in this study was achieved by scalloped and sawtooth riblets at low frequency domain and for some cases at higher frequency range by manipulating of the cavitation oscillation mechanism and elimination of a large-scale cavitation structure. This study provided new insight into controlling the destructive effects of cavitation using bio-inspired riblets, which should be relevant for various engineering applications. The hydrofoil plays a crucial role in tidal current energy (TCE) devices, such as horizontal-axis turbines (HATs), vertical-axis turbines (VATs), and oscillating hydrofoils. This study delves into the numerical investigation of passive chordwise and spanwise deformations and the hydrodynamic performance of a deformable hydrofoil. Three-dimensional (3D) coupled fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulations were conducted using the ANSYS Workbench platform, integrating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA). The simulation involved a deformable hydrofoil undergoing pitching motion with varying elastic moduli. The study scrutinizes the impact of elastic modulus on hydrofoil deformation, pressure distribution, flow structure, and hydrodynamic performance. Coefficients of lift, drag, torque, as well as their hysteresis areas and intensities, were defined to assess the hydrodynamic performance. The analysis of the correlation between pressure distribution and deformation elucidates the FSI mechanism. Additionally, the study investigated the 3D effects based on the flow structure around the hydrofoil. Discrepancies in pressure distribution along the spanwise direction result from these 3D effects. Consequently, different chordwise deformations of cross-sections along the spanwise direction were observed, contributing to spanwise deformation. The pressure difference between upper and lower surfaces diminished with increasing deformation. Peak values and fluctuations of lift, drag, and torque decreased. The resistance performance of amphibious vehicles can be improved by installing underwater tail hydrofoils. The research on the impact of different hydrofoil profiles on the resistance characteristics of amphibious vehicles can provide a reference for the vehicle's design. For an amphibious vehicle model, five shapes of symmetrical hydrofoils, NACA0012, NACA0015, NACA0016, and asymmetric hydrofoils NACA23012, NACA66-209, were selected as the underwater tail wing of the vehicle body, respectively. Based on the RANS method and overset grid technology, the resistance performance of the vehicle body was numerically calculated, and the resistance variation in the amphibious vehicle equipped with different tail hydrofoils at 0.43 < Fr∇ < 1.3 speed was obtained. The basic shape of amphibious vehicle tail wings can be determined by comparing the effects of symmetrical hydrofoils and asymmetric hydrofoils on body resistance. The results show that the asymmetric hydrofoils have a better resistance reduction effect on amphibious vehicles than the symmetrical ones. Among them, an amphibious vehicle installing the asymmetric hydrofoil NACA66-209 as an underwater tail wing can reduce resistance by 44.3%. Chord length is an important factor affecting the resistance reduction performance of tail wings. When Fr∇ = 1.3, the asymmetric hydrofoil optimized based on chord length has a 21.2% higher resistance reduction effect on amphibious vehicles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper introduces a novel filter algorithm termed as an MKMC-CSVSF which combined square-root cubature Kalman (SR-CKF) and smooth variable structure filtering (SVSF) under multi-kernel maximum correntropy criterion (MKMC) for accurately estimating the state of the fully submerged hydrofoil craft (FSHC) under the influence of uncertainties and multivariate heavy-tailed non-Gaussian noises. By leveraging the precision of the SR-CKF and the robustness of the SVSF against system uncertainties, the MKMC-CSVSF integrates these two methods by introducing a time-varying smooth boundary layer along with multiple fading factors. Furthermore, the MKMC is introduced for the adjustment of kernel bandwidths across different channels to align with the specific noise characteristics of each channel. A fuzzy rule is devised to identify the appropriate kernel bandwidths to ensure filter accuracy without undue complexity. The precision and robustness of state estimation in the face of heavy-tailed non-Gaussian noises are improved by modifying the SR-CKF and the SVSF using a fixed-point approach based on the MKMC. In order to study the effect of the pumping depth and pumping frequency of the flapping hydrofoil device on suspended solids in the waters, this paper takes raceway aquaculture as an example, and introduces a flapping hydrofoil device to improve the discharge of suspended solids in the raceway, in response to the problem of the deposition of suspended solids from fish faeces and bait residues in water. The CFD method was used to compare and analyze the discharge of suspended solids at different pumping depths, and the combined effect of the two was studied according to different combinations of pumping frequency and pumping depth. The results proved that the flapping hydrofoil motion can improve the bottom hydrodynamic insufficiency in ecological waters and thus enhance the discharge effect of suspended particles in water. In addition, the pumping depth of the flapping hydrofoil is too deep for the movement to be disturbed by the bottom surface, while the thrust generated by the flapping hydrofoil is weakened if the depth is too shallow. When the pump water depth is 1.1 H, the reversed Kármán vortex street is more stable under the balancing effect of the bottom surface and gravity, and the rate curve of the flapping hydrofoil acting on the discharge of suspended particles is better. From our comprehensive consideration of the joint effect of the pumping depth and pumping frequency, we recommend the use of a 1.1 H of pumping depth and 2.0 Hz pumping frequency in combination to achieve the best effect of discharging suspended particles. This study provides valuable insights into the actual engineering applications of flapping hydrofoil devices for improving water quality and ecological sustainability in raceway aquaculture. Hydrofoil, as the basic shape of the fluid blade, is widely used in fluid transport and energy conversion. However, friction resistance and pressure differential resistance are generated in the hydrofoil flow process, resulting in substantial energy consumption and negatively affecting the economy. On this basis, we propose two drag-reducing structures based on Clark-Y hydrofoil. In the design process of the jet structure, we considered the bionic jet velocity, jet angle and jet structure position as the design parameters and obtained the optimal jet structure by using Taguchi method. Finally, the two schemes (Clark-Yori and Clark-Yopt) are numerically simulated using large eddy simulation. Results show that when Ujet = 1.44 m/s, θ = 3° and x = 18.6 mm, the jet structure can play a significant drag reduction effect. Compared with Clark-Yori, the drag coefficient of Clark-Yopt is reduced by 26.5%, and the lift drag ratio is increased by 16.4%. Compared with Clark-Yori, Clark-Yopt can reduce the wall shear stress of the leading edge of the hydrofoil, thereby diminishing the frictional resistance. Meanwhile, the jet structure can effectively balance the area of the low-pressure region on the suction side of the hydrofoil, significantly reducing the pressure differential resistance. Clark-Yopt can accelerate the vortex collapse that decreases turbulence intensity and turbulence resistance. The oscillating hydrofoil, a device used for collecting environmentally friendly tidal energy, is the focus of the study. The flexibility of the hydrofoil's trailing edge can impact its surface pressure distribution, lift, and moment characteristics. To improve the energy harvesting performance of oscillating hydrofoils, it is important to conduct thorough research on their energy harvesting mechanism. Therefore, numerical analysis is employed to develop a numerical model of the fully passive oscillating hydrofoil with the flexible trailing edge. The dynamic development behavior of surface vortices on hydrofoils is analyzed, demonstrating that the fluid–structure interaction between the hydrofoil and the surrounding fluid alters the hydrofoil's motion. The vortex patterns and pressure distribution on the hydrofoil surface are also affected, ultimately influencing the energy harvesting performance. By optimizing the flexibility coefficient of the fully passive oscillating hydrofoil with a flexible trailing edge, the energy harvesting performance of the oscillating hydrofoil is improved. When the maximum chord offset δm= 0.1c and the flexibility coefficient n = 2, the energy harvesting efficiency is 31.37%, and the average power coefficient is 1.17. Therefore, increasing the tail flexibility can be considered to enhance energy harvesting performance when designing the fully passive oscillating hydrofoil. The research provides a comprehensive analysis of energy harvesting performance, addressing the dynamic problem of the fully passive oscillating hydrofoils with flexible trailing edges. We numerically study the fluid–structure interaction of a free-stream flow across a hydrofoil pitching at its leading edge with superimposed traveling wave-based surface undulations. We utilize an in-house code that employs the sharp interface immersed boundary method and consider a constant pitching amplitude θ0 = 5°, a constant local amplitude-to-thickness ratio A L = 0.15 , and wave number K = 20 of surface undulation. We compare the effect of surface undulation on a pitching hydrofoil with that of a hydrofoil undergoing pure pitching or experiencing pure surface undulation. The findings reveal that surface undulation on the pitching hydrofoil increases thrust on the hydrofoil. The onset of asymmetry in the vortex street occurs at a lower pitching Strouhal number (St) due to the early formation of a vortex dipole. In addition to the presence of an asymmetric inverse von Kármán vortex street, higher pitching frequencies reveal re-deflection of the asymmetric inverse von Kármán vortices. We quantified dynamics of vortex dipole to explain the occurrence of asymmetric and re-deflected reverse von Kármán vortex street. Furthermore, the analysis reveals an optimum combination of St and phase speed that yields higher propulsive efficiency, as both motions compete in generating thrust. Imitating Dolphin fish-like movement is productive method for enhancing their hydrodynamic capabilities. This work aims to analyze and understand the oscillations of tail fluke of Dolphin, which can be used as a propulsive mechanism for underwater fish robots and vehicles. The objective of the work is to achieve the desired oscillating amplitude by simulating the NACA 0012 profile using computational models and Set up the swimming movement of the dolphin, imitating a fish like model. Computational techniques were employed to examine the propulsive capabilities of the oscillating hydrofoil, inspired by the dolphin's biological propulsion. The evolutionary of fluid pattern in the field surrounding both Dolphin fish model and the NACA0012 hydrofoil, from initial motion to cruising, was established, and the hydrodynamic impact was subsequently studied. An user-defined function (UDF) was developed to create a dynamic mesh interface with CFD code ANSYS FLUENT for establishing the oscillations of Dolphin tail across the flow field. Influencing hydrodynamic coefficients such as lift and drag coefficients at different frequencies were also obtained. The findings shown that when the acceleration of the Dolphin fish model increases, the time averaged drag force coefficient drops because The wake field's vortex disperses to have some beneficial effects and pressure of water surrounding the fish head intensifies to produce a large resistance force. Simulation results show a 98% agreement at lower frequency and speed levels but a 5% deviation at higher frequency and speed due to turbulence effects in both models. It was established that the vortex superposition enhances the Dolphin fish like model rather than lowering its positive impacts. The submerged hydrofoil has the capability to harness wave energy and convert it into thrust to work with the ship's power system. The current series of experiments investigated the interaction of a passive submerged hydrofoil with regular waves through a comparison of the generated horizontal forces. Springs provide the restoring force for the hydrofoil's heave/pitch motion, corresponding to heave spring and pitch spring. Maintaining a constant heave spring stiffness (490 N/m), subsequent statistical analysis summarized the force trends at different pitch stiffnesses (16–300 N/m) and suggested an optimal pitch spring stiffness in regular waves. A pulse-shaped force signal was observed and explained as a result of low pitch stiffness. Experiments with different spring setups revealed that the heave spring contributes to the harmonic force generated by the fully passive foil. Additionally, by varying wave conditions with limited wave amplitudes and frequencies, tests reproduced the variation of force signals over time and assessed their dependence on wave parameters. The cavitation phenomenon can induce non-uniformity in the fluid, impacting fluid dynamic performance. This paper focuses on the cavitation shedding of the Delft Twist 11 hydrofoil. First, the reliability of numerical simulations is verified by computational fluid dynamics results. Utilizing the variational mode decomposition method, the cavitation signals on two cavitation paths are decomposed. Finally, the cavitation pulsation tracking network method is proposed to extensively investigate the spatial propagation patterns of cavitation signals at various sections above the twisted hydrofoil. The results reveal that typical frequencies at different monitoring planes are 30, 58, and 88 Hz. The corresponding amplitude analysis at these frequencies provides insight into the spatial propagation and attenuation process of cavitation vortices shedding. This study offers a novel perspective for a deeper understanding of cavitation mechanisms. The flapping hydrofoil bionic pump is an innovative hydrodynamic device that utilizes flapping hydrofoil technology. Flapping hydrofoil bionic pumps are crucial in addressing issues like inadequate river hydropower and limited water purification capabilities in flat river network regions. Optimizing the foil characteristics is essential for enhancing the hydrodynamic efficiency of the flapping hydrofoil bionic pump. This study investigates the impact of foil camber parameters on the hydrodynamic performance of swing-type asymmetric flapping bionic pumps. The NACA series standard foils with varying cambers are analyzed using the overlapping grid technology and finite volume method. The thrust coefficient, flow rate, pumping efficiency, and flow field structure of the flapping hydrofoil bionic pump are examined under pressure inlet conditions with the foil camber. The findings indicate that increasing the foil's curvature within a specific range can greatly enhance the maximum values of thrust coefficient, propulsive efficiency, and pumping efficiency of the flapping hydrofoil bionic pump. Specifically, when the foil curvature is 6%c, the maximum value of the instantaneous thrust coefficient of the flapping hydrofoil bionic pump is significantly improved by 31.25% compared to the symmetric foil type under the condition of an oscillating frequency of f = 1 HZ. The flapping hydrofoil bionic pump achieves its maximum pumping efficiency when the oscillation frequency is within the range of f ≤ 2.5 Hz. This efficiency is 11.7% greater than that of the symmetric foil, and it occurs when the foil curvature is 8%c. Within the frequency range of f > 2.5 Hz, the flapping hydrofoil bionic pump that has a foil curvature of 6%c exhibits the highest enhancement in pumping efficiency. Several advanced medical and engineering tasks, such as microsurgery, drug delivery through arteries, pipe inspection, and sewage cleaning, can be more efficiently handled using micro- and nano-robots. Pressure-driven flows are commonly encountered in these practical scenarios. In our current research, we delve into the hydrodynamics of pitching hydrofoils within narrow channels, which may find their potential applications in designing bio-inspired robots capable of navigating through pressure-driven flows in confined channels. In this paper, we have conducted a numerical investigation into the flow characteristics of a National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 0012 hydrofoil pitching around its leading edge within a plane Poiseuille flow using a graphical processing unit accelerated sharp interface immersed boundary method solver. Our study considers variations of the wall clearance from 20% to 50% of the channel width. We have explored the hydrodynamic features such as instantaneous and time-averaged values of lift, drag, input power, and torque for different wall clearance ratios and oscillation frequencies in the range of Reynolds number 100–200 based on the mean velocity and channel width. We have tried to explain the force, torque, and power variations by examining the flow features in the near wake. While the hydrodynamic coefficients showed significant variations with changes in wall clearance and the Strouhal number (St), we did not observe significant variations with alterations in the Reynolds number (Re). In the present paper, the restricted cavitation bubble dynamics near an asymmetric Joukowsky hydrofoil are investigated theoretically and experimentally. This investigation employs the conformal transformation, the image method, and the Kelvin impulse model, together with high-speed photographic experiments. The characteristics of bubble collapse deformation and bubble wall movement are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, and the spatial distributions of the liquid velocity and Kelvin impulse are revealed by theoretical predictions. The main conclusions include (1) the bubble collapse deformations can be divided into three typical cases: penetrating deformation (mostly occurs when γ < 2 with γ defined as the bubble-hydrofoil dimensionless distance), triangular depression (mostly occurs when 2 < γ < 4), and arc-shaped depression (mostly occurs when γ > 4). (2) The impulse acting on the bubble is governed by a point source and a point sink, which is dominant, and the impulse is inversely correlated with the bubble-hydrofoil distance, which corresponds to the experimental results. (3) The Kelvin impulse exhibits different distributions at the tail, head, and middle regions of the hydrofoil, and the impulse angle remains basically unchanged in the concave region of the asymmetric hydrofoils (i.e., the range of 240 ° < θ z < 350 ° with θ z defined as the bubble position angle). The unsteady cavitating flow past a three-dimensional twisted hydrofoil is numerically investigated by a large eddy simulation to obtain in-depth insight into the bubble dynamics near the cavitation erosion region. Macroscopic cavity evolution is captured by a multiphase flow computing frame, while the bubble oscillations in the cavitating flow are computed by solving the Gilmore bubble dynamic model, in which the driving force for the bubble movement is exported through the application of a discrete phase model. The cavitation erosion potential is then computed by a robust indicator developed based on the energy balance hypothesis. The relevance between the dynamics and the destructive essence of a cavitation bubble and the erosion intensity is thoroughly analyzed. The results show that the unsteadiness involved in the turbulent cloud cavitation is well reproduced, and the main cavitation erosion risk in the middle region of the hydrofoil is also accurately predicted comparing with the painting test results. A localized high-pressure region is identified near the rear part of the attached cavity where the mainstream encounters the primary reentrant jet flows. The peak bubble internal pressure can reach 487 MPa near the middle plane of the hydrofoil, during the stage when the surrounding liquid pressure is continuously increased. The bubbles with the smallest radius, ranging from 23.1 to 26.3 μm after compressing from their initial sizes (R0 = 100–700 μm) in the near wall region, are associated with the extremely high internal pressure, and they are responsible for the cavitation erosion damage on the hydrofoil surface. Recovering flow states from limited observations provides supports for flow control and super-resolution. Advances in deep learning have made it possible to construct precise state estimators. In this work, a deep learning estimator with an initialization branch and a residual branch is proposed to predict velocity fields from sparse pressure on the hydrofoil surface. In detail, on the one hand, the pre-trained proper orthogonal decomposition-based model as an initialization branch is employed to generate initial predictions. On the other hand, the U-shaped neural network-based model as the residual branch is trained to learn the residual between the initial predictions and the ground truth. Compared to previous models, the proposed model not only enhances prediction accuracy but also improves the interpretability of the model. Furthermore, the incorporation of the initialization branch has little influence on training and inference speed. Test results illustrate that residual learning provides additional model capacity for improving the prediction of transverse velocity fields and flow details. Moreover, even in the presence of intense velocity fluctuations near the trailing edge, predictions from the improved model are more consistent with ground truth. Visualization of feature maps underscores a significant advantage of the improved model over the baseline model in terms of structural features and increased distinctiveness among features, thereby facilitating interpretability enhancements. Tip-leakage cavitating flow around hydrofoils has attracted much research interest, but the complex structures of tip separation vortex (TSV) and tip-leakage vortex (TLV) have not been clearly resolved and discussed with the effects of tip clearance and skew angle yet. In the present work, large eddy simulation (LES) with multi-level octree grid refinement is used to investigate the tip-leakage flows around a series of twisted hydrofoils with various skew angle and tip clearance. High resolution is guaranteed by the normalized grid sizes of y + < 1 , Δ x + ∼ 50 and Δ z + ∼ 10 , through which the predicted flow meets the criterion that at least 80% of the turbulent kinetic energy is resolved. The TSVs are identified to grow from the entire lower edge of the tip and twine with the TLV into a primary vortex tube, which leads to counter-rotating induced vortices (IV) strongly twisted around the primary vortex in the case of medium tip clearance but weakened for small one. Cavitation effect significantly accelerates the roll-up process of the vortices so that the primary vortex is formed earlier. The tip-leakage flow turns from wake-like to jet-like when the clearance is reduced, but the jet velocity diminishes markedly for extremely small clearance. The hydrofoil skewness barely makes a lift on the vortex tube, distinctive from the effect of tip clearance variation. The adverse pressure gradient induced by the skew angle has significant effect on the laminar–turbulent​ transition of the flow. Cloud cavitation always causes severe damage to the efficiency and stability of the hydraulic machinery, resulting in extra energy losses in the system. We have observed an effective and simple way to prevent cloud cavitation formation by placing an obstacle near the hydrofoil's trailing edge. Cavitating flows around four different types of hydrofoils were simulated using the stress-blended eddy simulation turbulence model: the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 66 hydrofoil and the NACA 66 hydrofoil with a 1 ×1 mm2 obstacle at 0.3c, 0.5c, or 0.7c. Sheet cavitation is the predominant mode of cavity flow when the obstruction is positioned at 0.7c. To find out why the cloud cavitation growth can be stopped when the obstruction is positioned at 0.7c, the velocity field, vorticity in the Z direction, and vortex structure of the Q-criterion were computed. To study the energy loss of the cavity flow and comprehend how obstacles affect it, the local entropy production rate was computed. It was discovered that the vorticity downstream of the obstacle, positioned at 0.7c, is restructured, which helps manage the flow separation upstream of the obstacle. Consequently, the hydrofoil's suction surface vorticity nearly rotates in the same direction as the obstacle at 0.7c, and the direction of Vx upstream of the obstacle is in the positive direction of the X axis, indicating that the reentrant flow has been controlled upstream of the 0.7c obstacle. In the face of mounting economic constraints, researchers are increasingly turning to data-driven methods for reconstructing unknown global fields from limited data. While traditional compressed sensing (CS) technology addresses this challenge, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm within CS encounters difficulties in precisely solving basis coefficients. This challenge is exacerbated by the frequently unknown observation matrix, often necessitating optimization methods for resolution. This study introduces the CS-FNN (CS-Fully Connected Neural Network) method, leveraging neural network technology to refine CS-obtained basis coefficients. This approach proves particularly advantageous in scenarios involving custom observation points. Focused on hydrofoil pressure fields, our comparative analysis with CS-PSO (CS-Particle Swarm Optimization) covers the reconstruction accuracy, the performance in varied unsteady situations, and robustness concerning the number of truncated proper orthogonal decomposition modes, measuring point distribution, and real noise environments. Results demonstrate the superiority of CS-FNN over CS-PSO in predicting global hydrofoil pressure fields, with higher reconstruction accuracy, a more flexible arrangement of measuring points, and a balance between robustness and accuracy that meets the requirements of practical engineering. Predicting the flow situation of cavitation owing to its high-dimensional nonlinearity has posed great challenges. To address these challenges, this study presents a novel reduced order modeling (ROM) method to accurately analyze and predict cavitation flow fields under different conditions. The proposed ROM decomposes the flow field into linearized low-order modes while maintaining its accuracy and effectively reducing its dimensionality. Specifically, this study focuses on predicting cavitation on the Clark-Y hydrofoil using a combination of numerical simulation, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), and neural networks. By analyzing different cavitation conditions, the results revealed that the POD method effectively reduces the order of the cavity flow field while achieving excellent flow field reconstruction. Notably, the zeroth- and first-order modes are associated with attachment cavitation, while the second-, third- and fourth-order modes correspond to cavitation shedding. Additionally, the fifth- and sixth-order modes along the hydrofoil surface are associated with the backward jet flow. To predict the conditions of high-energy modes, the neural network proved to be more effective, exhibiting excellent performance in stable attached cavitation. However, for cloud cavitation, the accuracy of the neural network model requires further improvement. Volumetric measurement for the non-cavitating tip vortex in the near field of an elliptical hydrofoil is conducted using tomographic particle image velocimetry, which provides a fully three-dimensional diagnose of the vortex formation and development. The wandering motion and flow properties of the near-field tip vortex under different incident angles and Reynolds numbers are investigated in detail. Unlike in the far field, the wandering motion in the near field is mainly subject to the local flow unsteadiness rather than the flow condition. By the "re-centered" post-processing, the deviations introduced by the wandering motion can be technically corrected, and more accurate vortex properties can be thus obtained. In the near field, a turning point of the vortex center trajectory is detected, the position of which is basically independent of the flow condition. By investigating the local flow properties, it is found that this turning point is the position where the tip vortex completely leaves the trailing edge of hydrofoil and enters the wake region. At this turning point, the external supply to the vortex core starts to be restricted, and the vortex circulation reaches a rather constant value. Further according to the local flow properties, the development process of the near-field tip vortex can be divided into three stages: vortex-attached stage, vortex-lifting stage and vortex-detached stage, which are found to be closely relevant to the hydrofoil configuration. Lock-in is of great importance in many engineering applications due to its practical implications for structural safety. The influence of composite bend-twist coupling on the wake dynamics and vortex-induced vibration around a carbon fiber composite hydrofoil is investigated and compared to a similar stainless-steel hydrofoil. Experiments are conducted by varying linearly and slowly the upstream velocity back and forth between 5 and 15 m/s, which allows reaching lock-in conditions for both hydrofoils. Due to the blunt truncation of the trailing edge, both hydrofoils produce strong and alternate vortices in their wake, whose effect is visible on vibration spectrograms. The steel hydrofoil produces a classical lock-in onto its first torsion mode, while the composite hydrofoil exhibits two lock-in phenomena onto both torsion and second bending modes. Interestingly, for the second bending mode, the vibration spectrogram reveals the existence of two frequencies: (i) the resonance frequency, which remains almost constant during the lock-in phase, and (ii) the Strouhal frequency, which increases linearly with the upstream velocity. Using flow visualization, we found that this peculiar behavior is the result of the twist-bending coupling, which leads to the co-existence of two different vortex-shedding mechanisms. Close to the hydrofoil tip, the large vibration amplitude dictates the shedding frequency while the shedding follows the Strouhal law elsewhere. The Ffowcs-Williams & Hawkings (FWH) acoustic analogy is adopted to reconstruct the acoustic far field of a system consisting of an upstream hydrofoil and a downstream propeller, considering the former at incidence angles of 0 ° , 10 ° , and 20 °. Also comparisons against the same propeller working in isolated conditions are reported. Fluid dynamic data from earlier high-fidelity, Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) on a grid consisting of 1.7 × 109 points are utilized. The analysis demonstrates that, with some exceptions at the smallest frequencies, the acoustic far field is dominated by the loading sound coming from the propeller, achieving its highest values of acoustic pressure in the upstream and downstream directions. In contrast, the lowest values occur on the propeller plane, whose minima are aligned with the spanwise direction of the hydrofoil. A strong dependence on the incidence angle of the hydrofoil is found, although decreasing toward higher frequencies. Interestingly, while at the shaft and at the blade frequencies the acoustic pressure coming from the hydrofoil-propeller system is always higher than that from the open-water propeller working alone, as expected, at higher harmonics of the blade frequency this is not the case. This may be due to phenomena of destructive interactions across the acoustic sources on the surface of the propeller or the result of a shift of the acoustic signature toward even higher frequencies, beyond the range covered by the database available to the present study. Recent experiments have demonstrated that tip vortices can trigger the ventilation formation around a surface-piercing hydrofoil. However, the influence of this ventilation on transient flow structures and vortex evolution remains unresolved. This paper numerically investigates the tip-vortex-induced ventilation formation for a surface-piercing hydrofoil at a stalled yaw angle. The predicted unsteady ventilated cavities with tip vortices and pressure-side spray are in reasonable agreement with experimental observations. The ventilation formation process can be divided into three stages: base ventilation, tip-vortex ventilation, and suction-side ventilation. It is indicated that ventilation has a greater impact on the lift coefficient than the drag coefficient. The lift coefficient increases during the base ventilation and tip-vortex ventilation stages due to the expansion of the low-pressure stalled flow, but decreases in the suction-side ventilation stage because of the gradual replacement of this low-pressure region by an aerated cavity. Tip-leakage and tip-separation vortices initially exist independently at the hydrofoil tip, then expand and merge through air ventilation, ultimately forming a strongly stable tip vortex. In the present research, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis has been conducted to investigate the practical utility of ducted design for marine propellers for a range of Reynolds numbers (Re). Hydrodynamic characteristics are investigated for ducted propeller -Kort nozzle for various duct angles (0o = a = 10o). The Kort nozzle duct section is less explored with NACA hydrofoils and has been a hot research topic in the domain. Here, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the duct section are numerically investigated, considering NACA4415 foil. All the simulations are performed using ANSYS-FLUENT in a range of 1×106 < Re < 5×106. We have used the k-ω SST turbulence model during our investigation. The performance of NACA4415 is evaluated concerning the lift, drag, and pressure coefficient for various angles of attack (-12° < ° < 12°). These models were employed for nozzle configuration at different shroud/duct angles (0° <αd < 10°). Hydrofoils hold considerable academic and practical significance in the realms of marine science, energy generation, and water-based engineering. They offer enhanced speed, efficiency, stability, and maneuverability. Bionic structures have emerged as potent tools for reducing energy losses and noise in hydraulic machinery, making bionic hydrofoils a hotbed of research activity. While prominent scholars have historically directed their bionic investigations toward airfoils, operating in compressible flow fields, recent research has shifted its focus to hydrofoils. The hydrofoil's operating environment is characterized by water instead of air, featuring incompressible flow, relatively low Reynolds and Mach numbers, and notably, cavitating flow. This study presents the bionic optimization design of a wavy leading edge for the hydrofoil, employing orthogonal experimental theory. The authors establish rankings for structural parameters of bionic hydrofoils and identify optimal parameter combinations, offering an optimization strategy for selecting bionic configurations. Subsequently, the authors conduct a numerical investigation into cavitating flow, integrating the FW–H (Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings) equation for the analysis of cavitation-induced noise. Notably, this research delves into the underlying mechanisms responsible for the efficacy of bionic structures in enhancing hydrodynamic performance, particularly in the reduction of cavitation-induced noise within cavitating flow, an area scarcely explored in formal publications. The results reveal that the amplitude of the wavy leading edge exerts the most significant influence on the lift-to-drag ratio, as well as the far-field sound pressure level, followed closely by the wavelength. When compared with a baseline hydrofoil, the optimized bionic hydrofoil demonstrates a substantial 45% reduction in maximum cavity volume and a noteworthy 1.3 dB reduction in far-field noise sound pressure level. A hydrofoil with a classic cylinder–hydrofoil structure is adopted for study in this paper. The hydrofoil is invented by National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and so-called NACA0012.The hydrofoil is placed in an unsteady turbulent environment by positioning a cylinder in front of the hydrofoil. The simulation includes a solid stress model to calculate the hydrofoil's elastic deformation. Large-eddy simulation is used to simulate the effects of different materials on the hydrodynamic performance and noise characteristics. Researching the hydrodynamic performance and acoustic radiation characteristics of the pitching hydrofoil in a turbulent flow provides a reference basis for its design and manufacture. It was found that different material properties have limited effects on the hydrodynamic performance of pitching hydrofoils, and the generated lift is similar for each case. An analysis of stress changes shows that the stress increases with increasing elastic modulus and as the fixed rod is approached. In contrast, the displacement decreases as the elastic modulus increases. The displacement increases with the distance from the fixed rod. Viscous oils, which are media commonly used for fluid power transmission, are characterized by high velocities, temperatures, and pressures when working in fluid components and mechanics. The transient nature of viscous oil makes it susceptible to complex operating conditions, which result in cavitation phenomena and can threaten the normal operation and safety of machinery and components. In this study, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model that accounts for cavitation was developed to study the cavitation characteristics, formation conditions, and development of cavitating flow in viscous oil around a hydrofoil under various flow conditions. Moreover, a visual experimental system in which viscous oil flowed around the hydrofoil was proposed and developed to investigate the cavitation properties with regard to various flow conditions. Both numerical results and experimental data indicated that cavitation occurred on the suction surface of the hydrofoil head, and the cavitation characteristics in viscous oil are significantly influenced by the flow conditions. The maximum vapor volume change rate for the degree of effects on cavitation in viscous oil by flow conditions was calculated to be 1.78 cm3/(m/s), −130.66 cm3/MPa, 0.16 cm3/°C, and 4.52 cm3/°, respectively. Low velocities, high pressures, low temperatures, and small impact angles were proved to be able to suppress cavitation. This study provides a research method, an experimental mean, and data support for cavitation flow of viscous fluids, especially oil. Internal solitary waves (ISWs) are a well-known phenomenon of water motion in the ocean, and their strong shear flow has a non-negligible harm to underwater marine engineering structures. To clarify the variation law of flow field and force during the interaction between ISW and common marine engineering structures-hydrofoils, in this paper, the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) method is introduced into the ISW problem for the first time. The advantage of this method is that it can display the flow field information in the frequency domain, and we obtained the flow field structure in the frequency domain during the whole flow process and mode 1 at the primary frequency with this method. We also obtained the time evolution flow field and force data through the particle image velocimetry technology and force sensor. The results show that the characteristics of flow field described by time domain and frequency domain show good consistency. According to the analyses results, we divide the flow process into low-frequency steady state and high-frequency disturbance. Most notably, we use the SPOD method to find that the sub-peak threshold of the flow frequency is surprisingly consistent with the sub-peak threshold of the force frequency. The main modes and frequency information of the flow field obtained by the SPOD method can provide valuable guidance for hydrofoil structures to avoid and predict ISW hazards in actual marine engineering operations. We perform large-eddy simulations to study a cavitating flow over a two-dimensional hydrofoil section—a scaled-down profile (1:13.26) of guide vanes of a Francis turbine—using the Schnerr–Sauer cavitation model with an adaptive mesh refinement in intensive phase transition flow areas. In the test case, the guide vane is tilted at an angle of attack of 9 ° to the direction of the flow, in which the Reynolds number, based on the hydrofoil chord length, equals 1.32 × 10 6 , thus providing a strong adverse pressure gradient along the surface. The calculated time-averaged turbulence characteristics are compared with those measured by particle image velocimetry to verify that the flow is correctly reproduced in numerical simulations using the procedure of conditional averaging proposed and tested in our previous investigation. A re-entrant jet is identified as the primary source of vapor cloud shedding, and a spectral analysis of the cavitating flow over the profile midsection is conducted. Two characteristic frequencies corresponding to the cases, when an attached cavity detaches completely (as a whole) and two partially from the hydrofoil, are found in the flow. The study reveals that the natural frequency of partial cavity shedding is three times higher than that of full detachments. The examined regime exhibits an oscillatory system with two oscillation zones related to cavitation surge instability and unsteady cloud cavitation resulting from the re-entrant jet. Conditional averaging correlates cavitation structures with pressure distributions, forces, and torque on the guide vane. This modeling approach captures the fine details of quasi-periodic cavitation dynamics, providing insights into unsteady sheet/cloud cavitation and offering a method for developing control strategies. Cryogenic cavitation exhibits complexities primarily represented by the coupled interactions of thermodynamic effects, vortices, and cavities during the cavitation process. To further investigate this coupling mechanism, this study employed the DDES turbulence model and Sauer–Schnerr cavitation model to perform unsteady numerical simulations of liquid nitrogen cavitation flow around the NACA0015 Hydrofoil. Numerical validation of the model utilized a symmetrical Hord hydrofoil. The results reveal that the upstream development of the recirculation flow under inverse pressure gradients is the fundamental cause of the detachment in the primary cavitation region. At a cavitation number of 0.616, thermodynamic effects noticeably suppress the formation of cavities and alter the range of adverse pressure gradients, consequently influencing the detachment behavior in the primary cavitation region. The phenomenon of water–jet pump stall can be ascribed to the development of blade boundary layer separation with the transition process playing a significant role in this separation. The hydrofoil is usually used as a simplified model of the water–jet pump impeller blade, and its flow field characteristics have important reference values for analyzing the impeller flow. Based on the transition model and the dynamic mode decomposition method, this article presents the results of a study that was carried out on the stall characteristics of the NACA0009 blunt trailing edge hydrofoil. The transition characteristics of hydrofoil surfaces at different angles of attack (AoA)and Chord-based Reynolds numbers (ReL) are obtained. The hydrofoil boundary layer transition is dominated by natural transition as the AoA is less than 4°, while the transition is dominated by leading-edge separation-induced transition as the AoA is greater than 4°. The investigation yields the dynamic properties of the LSB (Laminar Separation Bubble) as the AoA is varied. The phenomenon known as the deep stall is distinguished by the movement of the stall vortex toward the upstream direction near the trailing-edge region, where it merges with the LSB in the leading-edge region. This phenomenon leads to oscillations in the lift and drag coefficients. The relationship between the LSB and the trailing-edge stall vortex is established using DMD (Dynamic Mode Decomposition) methods. As the phenomenon of the deep stall occurs, it can be observed that the modal energy of the leading-edge LSB is comparatively higher than the modal energy of the trailing-edge stall vortex, inducing the dominant role of the LSB and the movement toward the trailing-edge region and, consequently, the phenomenon of trailing-edge vortex shedding in the hydrofoil. Experimental research was carried out to investigate the characteristics of tip vortex cavitation (TVC) caused by tip vortex in an oscillating hydrofoil. Shanghai Shipping and Research Institute's looped cavitation tunnel served as the site of the experiments. The hydrofoil used as the test was NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) 63820. Two high-speed cameras, one torque sensor, and six hydrophones were employed to capture the cavitation patterns, the torque exerted on the hydrofoil, and the cavitation noise, respectively. The cavitation flow under static angle of attack (AoA) and the dynamic AoA have all been investigated in order to have a better knowledge of the differences between the TVC surrounding these two conditions. The AoA of 8.5°, 10°, and 14.5° and the AoA range of 1.8°–16° were selected for the static condition research and the dynamic condition study, respectively. A tip vortex flow was created between the tip of the stationary hydrofoil and the ceiling of the tunnel test section. To investigate the impact of the cavitation number on the growth of TVC surrounding the pitching hydrofoil, various pressure environments were built up. As for the experiment environment, cavitation numbers 2.47, 2.00, and 1.66 were used. The results indicate: (1) under static conditions, decreasing cavitation and increasing AoA lead to increased stability and topological complexity of TVC. (2) Comparing and analyzing cavitation patterns during the ascending, static, and descending processes reveal that the strongest cavitation intensity during the descending process, followed by static conditions, with the least intensity during the ascending process. (3) The frequency properties under pitching motion include those of each static AoA condition, although the acoustic characteristic of higher AoA has a stronger influence on that of dynamic condition. A compressible cavitation model is developed in this paper, in which the bubble wall velocity is obtained by solving the compressible Rayleigh–Plesset (R–P) equation. Additionally, vapor compressibility is also included during evaporation/condensation to correct the phase change rate. The predicted results around a National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 66 (mod) hydrofoil are compared with the available experimental data, and a satisfied agreement is obtained. By (mod), we mean the NACA 66 hydrofoil modified by Brockett ["Minimum pressure envelopes for modified NACA-66 sections with NACA a = 0.8 camber and BuShips type I and type II sections," Technical Report No. 1780 (David Taylor Model Basin Washington DC Hydromechanics Lab, 1966)] and Valentine ["The effect of nose radius on the cavitation-inception characteristics of two-dimensional hydrofoils," Technical Report No. 3813 (Naval Ship Research and Development Center, 1974)]. Several crucial flow properties, e.g., fluid compressibility, cavitation evolution features, and pressure statistical characteristics, are studied in detail. The results suggest that the developed compressible cavitation model is better suited for predicting the collapse behavior of cavitation. Moreover, our work captures the liquid re-entrant jet and bubbly shock waves well and reveals that these two mechanisms jointly dominate the cavity shedding dynamics. Shock-induced pressure pulses play a more important role in flow features, with a maximum amplitude exceeding 200 kPa, significantly larger than the pressure pulse caused by liquid re-entrant jets. Finally, the statistical analysis indicates that the pulsating pressure presents non-Gaussian nature with positive skewness, and shock waves exhibit high-frequency and high-energy characteristics.
