- Abstract
This article identifies the commonalities and conceptual differences of the term "construction" according to whether it is used in sociology or psychoanalysis in studies on sexual risk-taking linked to HIV / AIDS in homosexual men. It is based on the analysis of the epidemiological discourse in public health, on the concept of "social construction" of the AIDS risk, then on the study of the Freudian text "Constructions in analysis". A case example shows how the AIDS risk may be psychically and socially constructed in a way that contributes to prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HUMAN sexuality , *ANIMAL species , *PARADOX , *HYPOTHESIS , *HOMOSEXUALITY - Abstract
From an evolutionary point of view, same-sex sexual interactions have long been considered a major paradox. This is because they have persisted throughout generations despite, presumably, not offering direct reproductive benefits and, apparently, reducing individual fitness. Nonetheless, same-sex sexual interactions are common in many animal species. This paper reviews some functional hypotheses that seek to solve this evolutionary puzzle: some consider it adaptative, meaning that these behaviors would bring benefits to individuals; others see it as a neutral by-product of other advantageous characteristics. A third branch understand same-sex sexual interactions to be non-adaptative and potentially deleterious to individuals. Finally, this paper discusses a revolutionary hypothesis that, unprecedently, questions whether sexual interactions involving exclusively individuals of the opposite sex are in fact the basal state of sexual behavior. GAY men , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *SAME-sex relationships , *HOMOSEXUALITY , *VIRTUAL reality - Abstract
The urban experience of gay men is of social and academic relevance since it points to modes of subjectivation and circulation in the city that give new meaning to the expected uses of spaces, subverting the mechanisms of exclusion, disciplining, cleaning, and segregation of bodies considered abject and undesirable. In this sense, we sought to know how the urban experience of cisgender gay men has been addressed in the scientific literature. Therefore, an integrative literature review of articles indexed in the CAPES journal portal published until April 2020 was carried out, based on the descriptors urban experience (is/exact) AND gay, urban experience (is/ exact) AND homosexual?, city AND homosexual? and city AND gay. We found 29 publications explored through thematic analysis. It was observed that the theme has grown in the number of publications mostly investigated in the Human Sciences, based on a qualitative approach of empirical studies carried out by male Latin American researchers. Two axes of analysis condense the main discussions: 1) Management of differences in the city; and (2) homosociability and fragmentation of urban experiences. The first addresses the articulation between the processes of gender-gentrification of spaces and the social markers of difference: public spaces, commercial/ consumer/leisure establishments, and virtual environments that present different degrees of openness to the management of differences in the city. The second explores homosexual relationships mediated by social norms and power relations, revealing homosexuality shattered in different stereotypes. The concentration in metropolitan cities, in spaces and moments of leisure/entertainment, or uses mediated by consumption, are several limitations of these studies as they reinforce a global gay model derailed from everyday experiences. Therefore, subjects such as "maricona", the "black fag" and the "effeminate" contradict even more the homogenizing discourses and recipes of living, cracking cities to welcome differences. Abstract: Destruction of tutelary figures and bourgeois respectability, free love, gay activism, sexual revolution, hedonism, drugs and psychedelic fantasies, wandering, destructive barbarity and provocation…, such countercultural issues are on the agenda of the Argentine writer Copi. If his work can be termed «minor» it is only in the Deleuzian sense, for its apparent superficiality is but a mask hiding its highly significant, subversive, political and revolutionary nature.

BISEXUAL men , *BRAZILIANS , *HOMOPHOBIA , *GAY men - Abstract
Effeminate gay and bisexual men are targets of double stigmatization because of anti-effeminacy and society's homophobia, even among the non-heterosexual community. This study aimed to investigate, in an exploratory way, the relational structure of anti-effeminacy through network analysis. An online survey was carried out with 1,123 non-heterosexual Brazilian men over 18 years old and with a mean age of 26.85 years (SD = 8.51). The relational model of anti-effeminacy produced in this study found associations with internalized homophobia (rp = 0.32) and predilection for more manlike partners (rp = 0.45). In addition, it was possible to identify an indirect relationship with the opening of sexual orientation, which occurs through internalized homophobia. This study, in addition to being the first one to develop a network analysis on antieffeminacy, contributes to the understanding of the phenomenon in the Brazilian context, providing perspectives for further research in the field. Though homosexuality is no longer considered a psychopathology, in many countries it is still considered a crime and punishments include even the death penalty. As gay rights progressed, so did ultraconservatism, which is accompanied by violence. According to Freud, homosexuality is as enigmatic as heterosexuality, but the belief in sexual complementarity -- unattainable according to psychoanalysis -- is perhaps a factor that leads many transsexuals to seek to harmonize sex and gender. They identify themselves as homosexuals in the first place, before identifying as transsexuals and their discourses reveal that adequation of the transsexual body may be in line with the cultural and homophobia internalized by homosexuals. Could the transsexual demand to match body and soul be a surreptitious attempt to deny homosexuality in contemporary times? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taking as reference frame the critical and genealogical analysis of Michel Foucault (1994) I try to understand the discourse mutations associated with sexual practices in a colonial context and how these discourses are part of a "biopower", that hierarchizes and organizes social life. The context of analysis focuses on the Palestinian Territories as a place of circulation of modern discourses, that travel from representations about the homosexual character of the Palestinians to discourses about their homophobic character, always with the aim of building an abyssal separation (Santos, 2009), between a civilized and healthy "Us" and a savage and pathological "Other". TRANSSEXUALISM , *HOMOSEXUALITY , *INTERSEXUALITY , *PSYCHOSES , *PSYCHOANALYSIS - Abstract
This work aims to localize the intertwining of common or repeated elements in psychoanalytic theorizations about homosexuality and transsexuality. By characterizing psychoanalytic discourses from Freud and Lacan to our days, we find a kind of repetition in these theorizations, since homosexuality has historically been associated to a choice of narcissistic object and perversion, a fact that is repeated nowadays in postulations about transsexualities, which are described as psychosis and perversion. We conclude that a large number of psychoanalytic texts are linked, intertwined and informed by repeating theories such as the thesis of psychic hermaphroditism that serves as the etiological basis for both homosexualities and transsexualities. In this brief retrospective of LGBT issues on US College Campuses: 1990–2020, the authors first review the extensive changes in the language used to 'define' people within these communities. Given the fluid and evolving language used in sexual and gender minority communities, it is crucial to examine how community members are named and who is centered as a result of this naming. The authors use the terms queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum to honor how individuals choose to identify themselves as opposed to placing them into socially constructed, fixed categories of sexuality and gender. Next, they explore how the climate has changed in higher education to support queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum students. Finally, the authors examine the research on how queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum students experience their campuses and the climate's influence on specific outcomes. This retrospective contends that higher education scholars must continue to examine outcomes that will facilitate success for queer- and trans-spectrum student populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article offers the first large-scale comparative analysis of pupils' and teachers' perspectives on homosexuality using two waves (2013 and 2017) of self-collected data through questionnaires issued in eight European countries: Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Spain, Poland, Hungary and Turkey. Using these unique data, the authors examine to what extent differences prevail across countries, what mechanisms explain the differences, and how the differences change over time. The results indicate significant differences across countries. Moreover, although a positive trend can be observed between the two waves of the survey, in some countries the general climate towards homosexuality is reversing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyze how comic aspects present in the performance of male homosexual characters conclude discursive formations on homosexuality in Brazilian telenovelas. The corpus of the study contemplates personages of novels from 21h of Rede Globo, namely, Felix (Amor à vida) and Téo Pereira (Império). From the debugging of 30 scenes, previously selected from each telenovela, were chosen and transcribed 15 of each, totaling 30 scenes. The corpus was analyzed according to the references of the Latin American cultural studies and queer studies. The study discussed the developmental arc of each character and the role of comic in the construction of his sexuality, as well as how the discursive formations present in the telenovelas reiterate moral deprecations historically attributed to homosexuals. Although they can be generically framed in the group of homosexual characters constantly defenestrated, both present interstitial aspects between the abjection and assimilation to the familista logic, a resource used by the culture of the media in order to pasteurize the differences in the scope of the relations of gender and sexuality. Finalement, la thèse s’intéresse aux stratégies de survie qui permettent aux sujets LGBTQ caribéens de négocier avec le biopouvoir : la désidentification, l’invisibilité contextuelle et la migration., This thesis concerns the inscription of LGBTQ subjects in dominant discourses and their apparatus in the context of recent Caribbean cultural production: Antes que anochezca by Reinaldo Arenas, El Rey de La Habana by Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, and Masi by Gary Victor; the collection of short stories Mundo cruel by Luis Negrón; the short story “¡Jum!” by Luis Rafael Sánchez; the poems “Young Faggot” and “Surrender” by Faizal (Deen) Forrester; and finally, the documentary film Des hommes et des dieux by Anne Lescot and Laurence Magloire. The theorical starting point of this thesis is the concept of (bio)power developed by Michel Foucault: an omnipresent web of power relationships that oversees, determines, creates, defines and limits subjects by means of discourses (such as ideology or religion) and apparatus (like gender and sexuality). Additionally, the thesis deals with the construction of Caribbean LGBTQ identities, which are represented as strongly dichotomic and based on the sexual role, and with the physical spaces in which Caribbean LGBTQ subjects are represented. These are not only marginal but they function as heterotopies.

HOMOSEXUALITY , *POLICE crackdowns , *DISORDERLY conduct , *GAY men , *CRIMINAL justice system - Abstract
This article discusses the Chinese state crackdown on homosexuality during the reform period through the narratives of homosexual men who were arrested and sentenced to re-education through labour at that time. Utilising the work on morality and law by Zygmunt Bauman, it is shown that Deng Xiaoping's proposal in 1979 to advance Chinese socialist spiritual civilisation was operationalised through a wide variety of procedures, including the use of the criminal justice system through the new crime of 'hooliganism'. It was understood that the object infringed upon by hooliganism was the social order itself, through acts that violated the moral principles of Chinese society. Legislated in 1979, hooliganism was an obvious tool for the regulation of sexuality. Those engaged in hooliganism had to be severely punished. Seven men of the 31 men in our study were arrested and six were sentenced to re-education through labour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the hypothesis of Frida Kahlo’s homosexuality by taking into account Lacan’s theorization on hysteria in his Seminar III from Freud’s “case of Dora”. As Lacan pointed out, one of the questions concerning the hysterical structure --What a woman is-- does not necessarily translate into an approach to other women due to the achievement of the choice of homosexual object, but to an attempt to solve the enigma of lack. - Abstract
This article examines the relationship between the use of the pronoun tú among working-class men and the perceived homosexuality of its use. In Colombia, the use of tú and usted among men is often a carefully considered linguistic choice, one that is tied to sexual identity and gender. While statistical studies have been done looking at this trend, prior research had not examined the reasoning behind this choice. In modern sociolinguistics and sociology, heterosexuality is not seen as a fixed aspect of a person’s being, but as a social identity that is managed through discourse. Embarking from Social Identity Theory, this research used a series of 20 extensive ethnographic interviews in Tolima, Colombia to explore the connection between heterosexuality and pronoun selection. After analysis using grounded theory, the article examines the idea that it is not homosexuality but heterosexuality that is constructed through careful pronoun use and that heterosexuality is actually a delicate construction. In this context, the article concludes that the sociolinguistic function of tú and usted is to serve as contextualization cues for the social distance required for men’s heterosexual social identity.

One of the most recent polemical issues is the freedom of sexual orientation. The following note shows, using secondary data, that the necessity of specifying the genre of the sexual partner gained importance, on Western culture, only and mainly in the Eighteenth century, and that the need for public recognition of the hetero diverse sexual orientation is, actually, a reconquest, and not a novelty in the mankind history, once there are reports of analogues practices since antique societies. - Abstract
This article highlights the discursive construction and significance of homosexuality in the DSM IV system (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), understanding that the meaning referring to the internal contents of the discourse and signification concerns the external (visible) contents. The research method focuses on content analysis: discussion, critique and description of the manual's constructive methodology. The content analysis technique was applied; including identification of the dominant discourse and style. The results evidence that the dominant discursive shape is institutional regarding the non-discursive forms (sexuãlis diversus). No changes in the psychiatric discourse are evidenced, because of its circular feedback construction method; in other words, somewhere in the process, homosexuality will be considered as a disorder or as a topic of psychiatric revision. The research reveals that the DSM IV system adjusts to the power-knowledge discursive construction widely documented by Foucault, in which the dominant discourse exerts power over the sexuãlis diversus, defining them in an exercise of knowledge and registering them in a diagnostic manual. This study aims to explain variation in the level of tolerance towards homosexuality between European countries. Results of multi-level regression analyses on 40 countries from the 2008 wave of the European Values Study show that countries’ economic affluence and laws on same-sex unions are positively associated with individuals’ tolerance towards homosexuality. An additional exercise suggests that the association between laws and attitudes may be the result of two-way causality; legislation seems to both shape and reflect levels of tolerance towards homosexuality. The study finds no independent association between tolerance and the level of religiosity in a country and refutes the hypothesis that high numbers of diagnosed HIV cases resulting from sex between men are negatively related to tolerance towards homosexuality in Europe. This article is a testimony of sexual practices between men at the beginning of the 21st century – at the time of the gradual disappearance of gay districts. In their contemporary progress, they collectively strengthen the synchrony of urban temporalities while being articulated with the diffuse and individualized temporalities of rural or urban recreational practices. Nevertheless, this re-reconsider the progress of a practice that is spatially and socially marginalized, as it undergoes collective representations concerning the nights. In fact, the sexual practices of men between them brought to read the activation of facets of identity according to the situations in front of the potential insult and how they keep the secret. A political question appears from the point of view of the management of practices that go beyond the formal framework of uses in public spaces.

Revealing the truth about the tormented life of Caravaggio has been one of the main research topics of the early 20th century. But, as far his homosexuality is concerned, information is missing. His sexuality is still perceived as rumors, widespread by his rivals. Despite the testimony left in the archives, Caravaggio’s homosexuality is still ignored or understated. Studying homosexuality of famous personalities is complex and raises a lot of objections. Is studying art through the queer prism still possible despite the general reluctance? Based on this observation, this research will analyze the homophile network of Caravaggio, and among them, the cardinal Del Monte, one of the most important patrons of the painter and a well-known homosexual.

Although attitudes toward homosexuality have been widely studied over the past 30 years, few studies have scrutinized the interaction effects between gender and race, and gender and religiosity, on attitudes toward homosexuality. This article analyzes US data from the fifth wave of the World Values Survey, collected in 2006 – a nationally representative sample of individuals residing in the United States. Contrary to previous research, no significant interaction is found between gender and race on attitudes toward homosexuality. This finding challenges conventional thinking on essentialized differences regarding racial groups and their attitudes toward homosexuality. The interaction between gender and religiosity, though, suggests that religiosity has a greater effect on women’s attitudes than men’s. Finally, the article shows that most of the difference in attitudes toward homosexuality between men and women is explained by differences in gender role beliefs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Homonationalism refers to the inclusion of homosexuality in the national rhetoric produced in particular by the USA in their "war against terrorism", proclaiming the superiority of the American civilization because it supposedly has abolished all sexual oppression - whereas in fact gays and lesbians in this country continue to suffer from discrimination and to endure an oppression directly linked to their sexuality. Setting gay and Muslim identities one against the other, this discourse thus makes homosexuality a white reality. The article shows that this type of counterposition and the creation of a feeling of sexual exceptionalism (national and white) is not simply a feature of the discourse articulated by the American military and policy-makers but also by many activist and academic progressive layers, including feminist and queer ones. HOMOSEXUALITY , *HUMAN sexuality , *PARENTING , *CRYSTALLIZATION , *ATTITUDE (Psychology) - Abstract
In times of liquid modernity and plastic sexuality, the family has reinvented itself. It is the di-vorce instead of death that separates couples. Therefore, the key components to constitute a family are the affection and the search for completeness. The same happens with parenting, causing the bonds of kinship no longer defined solely by blood ties. Thus, the increasing visibil-ity, on the Brazilian social scenario, of the so-called homo parenting seems to be inevitable. These families are the object of this article, which depicts the stigma of homosexuality, showing that it is still alive. The grounds of the study suggests that, from a post-identity approach, the constitution of crystallizes identities have to be reconsidered. In this way, rather than show a way out, this new attitude proposes the des-construction of structures already naturalized, through a process which suggests the discussion of how these very same structures came to be. The main propose here is a new attitude towards life and also towards oneself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The identity and the human sexuality are a dialectic pair that runs through the analytical work. Sexuality both confronts us with the most enigmatic of the object and our own self, and allows us to greater intimacy with others and gives us the ineffable sense of being, throughout our lives, ourselves. In the analytic relationship, the sexuality is present in a disturbing way. The sexuality in the transfer is always unsettling, disruptive for the convenience of interpretations related to infantile dependence. The breakthrough, however expected to be, leaves us speechless and surprised. The sexuality never shows how or where we expect it. I will present clinical material that led me to think of this dialectic pair sexuality, identity, in their mutual determination, their disruption and confrontation, its very complex interdependence. The dialectical relationship between subjectivity and sexuality become more complex through vectors of interdependence and mutual determination, as well as infinite tension, disruption and mutual threats. As a result of a certain fear of the eroticism of the transference-countertransference's links, it seems that there becomes a des-libidinization of analytical links and thus, their sterility. The aim of the analyst is to understand the enigmatic, his psychosexuality is at the time of the analytical work, channeled and directed to understanding the mind of the patient. From that place of ethics, his sexed self enters in transference dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article first describes how the principle of non-discrimination of homosexuals is anchored in EU legislation and influences concrete policies of the European Union. Against this background, the second section analyses citizens' attitudes towards homosexuality and whether there are differences among the 27 EU member states and Turkey. The descriptive findings show that there are substantial differences at the national and individual level in the degree to which citizens think of homosexuality as acceptable. A sense that homosexuality is justifiable is particularly low in recently acceded countries and is almost non-existent in Turkey. Modernization theorists have argued that economic development influences the value orientation of the citizens. Other scholars have claimed that values are strongly influenced by the religious heritage of a country. Using multilevel analysis, the study tests to what extent modernization factors and/or religious factors influence citizens' attitudes towards non-discrimination of homosexuality. According to the results of the causal analysis, modernization theory and cultural heritage theory contribute to explaining attitudes towards homosexuality. All the hypotheses derived from the two theories are supported by the statistical analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Homophobia has been scarcely studied in Mexico in an empiric manner. Based on results from studies in other countries, it is now known that homophobia is associated with variables like religion, low levels of education, older age, and traditional gender roles. In this study, the Homophobia Scale and the Inventory for the Evaluation of Attributive Instrumental and Expressive Dimensions were applied to 252 participants from Mexico City between the ages of 14 and 77. The results showed that attitudes are more negative towards gay men than towards lesbians; and men, religious people, people with lower levels of education, and levels of negative instrumentality are associated with higher levels of homophobia. On the other hand, those who have contact with homosexuals and have high levels of positive expressiveness or androgyny are less homophobic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An initiative to market Cape Town as a premier gay and lesbian tourist destination has steadily gathered steam over the last decade. I set out to study this phenomenon thereby adding to conversations about the normalization and globalization of queerness. Rather than straightforwardly presenting my findings, however, this paper considers queer theorizing as an inductive process by detailing the answers I did not find in the field and the questions I did. Based on my close readings of queer theory, I went looking for resistance and therefore queerness in the normalized space of ‘gay Cape Town’. I was disappointed. But I did not instead find outright capitulation. Rather, in this process of queer's commodification, I found anxieties, cracks and fissures beneath a veneer of assured mainstreaming. I found an undetermined process that did not represent either ‘un-African-ness’ or ‘global queer homogeneity’ or ‘African-ness’ and ‘local queer heterogeneity’. I found not an un-queering through commodification, but a queer commodity struggling to gain a foothold in a nation in which the terrain for gay and lesbian politics has drastically changed in such a way that the market cannot be ignored. To grapple with these findings, I argue for a more ambivalent approach to queer theorizing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The scarce literature on homosexuality in Andean countries almost exclusively treats urban contexts. With reference to rural settings, considered “indigenous” by definition, many political activists with Indianist postures insist that homosexuality does not exist in Andean culture, being a perversion introduced by Spanish colonization. If homosexual persons were identified in an Andean community, they would be totally rejected. In both cases the focus is on male homosexuality. This essay presents case studies of both male and female homosexuality in two Bolivian provinces, demonstrating that these sexualities are recognized in the local culture and that the people who display them participate in public and private activities without being subject to discrimination or rejection.
