Abstract

Though homosexuality is no longer considered a psychopathology, in many countries it is still considered a crime and punishments include even the death penalty. As gay rights progressed, so did ultraconservatism, which is accompanied by violence. According to Freud, homosexuality is as enigmatic as heterosexuality, but the belief in sexual complementarity -- unattainable according to psychoanalysis -- is perhaps a factor that leads many transsexuals to seek to harmonize sex and gender. They identify themselves as homosexuals in the first place, before identifying as transsexuals and their discourses reveal that adequation of the transsexual body may be in line with the cultural and homophobia internalized by homosexuals. Could the transsexual demand to match body and soul be a surreptitious attempt to deny homosexuality in contemporary times? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
