HIGHER education , *EDUCATIONAL quality , *QUALITY assurance - Abstract
ABSTRACT The paper outlines the history of the different uses of ‘quality’ in higher education. Emphasis is given to the United Kingdom, but consideration is also given to a range of international contexts. Three different uses of ‘academic quality’ are identified (the state‐driven, sector‐derived, and the traditional academic uses) and their relationship to fundamentally different priorities, values, criteria, purposes and practices is established. The notion of a concept as it applies in the paper is then explained before four alternatives to the thought that there is more than one concept of academic quality are evaluated and ultimately rejected. It is argued that those different uses of ‘academic quality’ are not minor changes in emphasis, but fundamentally different uses of the words rooted in different concepts of academic quality with different implications for measurement and/or evaluation. The identification of those three concepts of academic quality is then put to use in critically analysing the current situation in relation to quality in higher education, involving discussion of the implications of the operation of different concepts of academic quality and reflection on how we might revise our approach to thinking about academic quality as a result. In this study, we examined articles related to academic quality assurance research in the sub-Saharan African (SSA) higher education context to identify internal and external mechanisms put in place to improve the quality of education. To achieve the objective, the study reviewed published studies to bring to light the standard quality benchmark indicators describing how quality assurance has been promoted in SSA starting from 2012 to 2022. Based on this premise, 143 articles were included in the review in accordance with the set criteria for inclusion. The study found that most of the SSA higher educational institutions give extra attention to the building of human resource capacity and neglected other important practices such as internationalization and the "building of industrial collaborations," though these were major ingredients for promoting quality assurance. It also came to fore that, amidst the efforts to achieve quality standards in teaching and learning, insufficient funding, lack of efficient academic staff, poor implementation of educational policies, and unstructured program for training and re-training of staff were the major hinderances to the promotion of quality assurance in higher institutions in the sub-Saharan African region. Based on the findings, recommendations were made for policy, practice, and future research in higher education delivery in the sub-region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines how being named the top party school in the nation by the Princeton Review effects the quality of students at a university. The results indicate that being named the top party school lowers the number of top-tier students who choose to attend the university as measured by academic test scores. The study further finds that being named a top party school has no effect on student applications; however, this designation does lower the number of students who are admitted and who chose to enroll after the institution is named the top party school. These findings suggest that the publicity of being named the top party school enhances a school's undesired reputation, thereby influencing student enrollment decisions, particularly among top-tier students. UNIVERSITY & college accreditation , *EDUCATIONAL accreditation , *GLOBAL studies , *HIGHER education , *EDUCATIONAL quality , *EDUCATIONAL outcomes - Abstract
Due to increasing demand for higher education around the world, concerns regarding the quality of education in higher education institutions have increased. The aim of this study was to determine perceptions of accreditation self-study coordinators and programme administrators on the influence of accreditation on academic quality. Data was collected by means of a scale devised by researchers. To achieve this, a comprehensive literature review was conducted, a pilot scheme was administered, expert opinion and advice were obtained and validity and reliability studies were conducted. The findings revealed that accreditation contributes more to the improvement of processes and practices in institutions in operation for 1–20 years compared to those functioning for more than 41 years. Similarly, accreditation makes a greater contribution during the initial accreditation process compared to re-accreditation. Additionally, accreditation contributes most to importance attached to learning outcomes and least to the number of students who graduate from a programme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper aims to fill a gap in the literature on continuous quality improvement in higher education, regarding factors that may contribute to the effectiveness of megaclasses. We argue for the need to view megaclasses as a complex service production system, using introductory statistics classes as an example. Given the multiple virtual and tangible factors and processes and diverse learning communities involved in the megaclass, we believe that there is a need to better understand both its academic learning outcomes (ie, formation of knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs) and outcomes of service processes (ie, satisfaction levels of stakeholders and service metrics). We propose directions for a research agenda in this rapidly developing arena, using a model of 6 research areas influencing the above outcomes: (1) teaching methods; (2) cognition, learning, and assessment; (3) emotions, attitudes, and beliefs; (4) self‐management and metacognition; (5) social interaction and inquiry patterns; and (6) technology‐based interactions. We examine 7 traditional and emerging research methods that may jointly contribute to a better understanding of outcomes in megaclasses and Massive Open Online Classes and discuss their implications. Theoretically grounded in Tinto’s model of retention and Braxton and colleagues’ revisions , this study is designed to examine the applicability of the integration model to students of different racial backgrounds. Results from a sample of full-time undergraduate students at a research-extensive university suggest that (a) academic and social integrations function differently to the persistence of Black and White students, (b) financial pressure was the most consistent impediment to college retention for all students, and (c) institutional control over academic quality is critical to student retention. In addition, results show that students of different racial backgrounds do not differ significantly in their reported intention to drop out. Implications for policy and planning are discussed. The purpose of this study was to identify the academic quality assurance practices that should be employed to attain teaching excellence at selected private higher education institutions in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The study adopted a qualitative interpretive research design and utilized one-to-one, in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 12 participants. The sample was purposefully selected and comprised six faculty members, four program directors, one senior academic staff member, and one junior non-academic administrator, from three private higher education institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Findings revealed four categories of practices: a) Must-keep practices, b) Must-modify practices, c) Must-add practices, and d) Must-avoid practices. Some of the practices relating to quality assurance that the study identified are maintaining important evaluation-related practices while providing feedback for improvement, closing the loop, educating all employees about and increasing their reengagement in quality assurance practice, and reducing paperwork and work duplication. This study concludes by recommending that higher education institutions employ the strategies discussed in the findings to promote teaching creativity and to improve the quality of teaching and learning, to achieve teaching excellence. https://doi.org/10.26803/ijlter.20.11.13

This essay addresses the issue of the importance of acquiring linguistic communication skills such as reading, speaking, writing, and understanding a second language such as English, Mandarin, or French, among others, in addition to the native language. The foregoing is with the full conviction that the student or university professor of the XXI century is an individual capable of generating a certain job competence that ends up being reflected in the continuous improvement of university academic quality. As well as, it is constantly tried to defend that reaching a level of proficiency in a foreign language represents the probability of a substantial improvement in the professional profile of the student and university teacher. Which in the end is expected to be reflected in a better job offer. This is how today's higher education assumes so many challenges within its incessant work of generating graduates who go out into the real world with viable and significant contributions that substantially promote the economic and cultural development of our society. All of the above is based on looking at the study and teaching of languages from a multicultural but universal perspective. Especialización

The concepts of academic quality and social responsibility in post-secondary organizations are spacious yet becoming more intertwined. With stated organizational values grounded in excellence and diversity, this Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) seeks to intersect a quality management framework with the equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) efforts at a multi-campus college in Atlantic Canada. Specifically, the problem of practice I aim to resolve is how a shared vision of academic quality may be created through an added lens of social responsibility among the academic leadership team. In order to achieve a shared vision of academic quality, there are two main goals central to this OIP: examine the newly developed APAE framework piloted through an international partner through a lens of local community and examine our quality standards through an EDI lens. Organizational learning theory provides insights into understanding how knowledge is created and used within the organization to accomplish these goals. Central to this initiative is a trianalogous leadership framework grounded in servant, transformational, and collective leadership ideologies used to guide the leadership team in a series of Academic Quality Leadership Lessons through a community of practice model. This process is supported by an appreciative inquiry modality which draws upon the strengths of current quality management initiatives and aims to bring about positive change by enhancing the leadership team’s knowledge of socially responsible quality management practices.

FACTOR analysis , *EDUCATIONAL quality , *GRADUATE education , *HIGHER education , *PUBLIC universities & colleges - Abstract
In this work we describe an instrument based on the use of a factor analysis technique in order to measure the quality of education within a Postgraduate degree offered by a public Spanish university. We showed that the instrument has satisfactory psychometric properties (reliability and validity). Regarding the factorial solution, three main dimensions have been determined, namely: importance given to the subject; educational resources and knowledge of the subject (previous and posterior). It is important to remark that these three dimensions were consistently detected in all the factorial analyses performed (total sample and separate academic years). These three dimensions should be considered as fundamental when designing an instrument to evaluate educational quality. These findings may be taken as a basis for the design of future strategies for the evaluation of educational quality on other type of degrees within the higher education area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Al-Qarawiyyin University's independence in terms of finances had been a significant and influential factor in making it possible for the university to maintain its high quality. Therefore, this paper aims to examine and analyse the financial sources for the development and operation of this university. It reviews and analyses historical data through relevant literature and documents. Waqf played a significant role in providing financial assistance to the university's communities and in strengthening its academic quality. There were four significant types of waqf sources which were the individual fund, the collective waqf fund, the Sultan fund and the alumni fund along with different other types of charities, i.e. sadaqah. This article adds new knowledge by examining the financing experiences of the world's oldest university. It is expected that the instance of Al-Qarawiyyin University may contribute to finding out a solution for the funding crises in contemporary institutions. This review is hoped to constitute a significant contribution to scholarship in general and act as a suggestion for solving the contemporary funding crisis of higher educational institutions. Students are an important asset in the world of education also an institution and therefore also need to pay attention to students' graduation rates on time. The ups and downs of the percentage of students' abilities in classroom learning is one important element for assessing university accreditation. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor and evaluate teaching and learning activities using the KNN Algorithm classification. By processing student complaints data and seeing the results of previous learning can obtain important things for higher education needs. In predicting graduation rates based on complaints, this study uses the K-Nearest Neighbor classification algorithm by grouping data k = 1, k = 2, k = 3 with the smallest value possible. In experiments using the KNN method the results were clearly visible and showed quite good accuracy. From the experiment it was concluded that if there were fewer complaints from one student it could minimize the level of student non-graduates at the university and ultimately produce good accreditation.

Accurate prediction and early identification of student at-risk of attrition are of high concern for higher educational institutions (HEIs). It is of a great importance not only to the students but also to the educational administrators and the institutions in the areas of improving academic quality and efficient utilisation of the available resources for effective intervention. However, despite the different frameworks and various models that researchers have used across institutions for predicting performance, only negligible success has been recorded in terms of accuracy, efficiency and reduction of student attrition. This has been attributed to the inadequate and selective use of variables for the predictive models. This paper presents a multi-dimensional and an integrated system framework that involves considerable learners' input and engagement in predicting their academic performance and intervention in HEIs. The purpose and functionality of the framework are to produce a comprehensive, unbiased and efficient way of predicting student performance that its implementation is based upon multisources data and database system. It makes use of student demographic and learning management system (LMS) data from the institutional databases as well as the student psychosocial-personality (SPP) data from the survey collected from the student to predict performance. The proposed approach will be robust, generalizable, and possibly give a prediction at a higher level of accuracy that educational administrators can rely on for providing timely intervention to students.

Academic quality in for-profit vocational college programs is a concern for all stakeholders, especially nontraditional college students. The purpose of this study was to expand understanding of how administrators and owners of for-profit (proprietary) colleges influence academic quality in on-ground vocational college programs. A phenomenological method was used to gather the lived experiences of 10 faculty members who taught in these programs at two for-profit vocational colleges in a large metropolitan area in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The study was organized using a systems-thinking framework. Participants were aware that the primary purpose of their for-profit institutions was to generate a profit. Most of the faculty interviewed for this study thought the administrators and owner of both institutions focused too much on profits and too little on education. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors that influence internationally mobile students’ decision making regarding their choice to study in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Design/methodology/approach The existing literature on student motivation was examined, particularly factors relevant to the two key jurisdictions. Subsequently, a qualitative study was conducted to verify and expand upon these factors. Findings This study found a high degree of overlap between the two jurisdictions. However, Taiwan-based students emphasised elements such as the political climate, and the opinion of family, friends and peers, whereas academic quality and the perception of authority figures featured more for Hong Kong-based respondents. Practical implications The similarities and disparities between the two jurisdictions provide insights for decision makers, as well as avenues for further research. Originality/value This paper builds upon prior research into international student destination choice by exploring students’ decision-making process through qualitative research; thus, highlighting previously unexplored factors.

Churches often validate their ministry training through Higher Education (HE) institutions in order to assure the academic quality of their awards. Although academic progress is carefully assessed, and churches have long debated formational aspects of ministry training, there has been little quantitative work that examines whether exposure to HE changes the faith of students. This study reports on the effects on various aspects of faith (such as beliefs about the Bible, biblical literalism, morality, exclusivity, quest orientation, and dogmatism) of a ministry programme delivered to Anglicans and Methodists that was validated by a United Kingdom university. A sample of 91 students completed questionnaires at the start and finish of their period of study, which ranged from one to three years. There was no evidence of systematic change in any of the tested variables that coincided with the period of study.

Since the founding of the University of Bologna in 1088, the quality and societal impact of university-based research has steadily risen and is widely expected to continually improve in the future. But, while the effectiveness of university teaching over this same period has improved through the adoption of laboratory instruction, the seminar method, tutorials, and more valid and reliable means of assessing students, the qualitative enhancement and continuous development of instruction compared to research appears less certain. Why does this difference exist? I will argue the cause is to be found in the limitations of universities’ traditional collegial culture and in the failure of recent national efforts to improve academic quality to effectively address academic norms and values.

Getting feedback from external stakeholders, especially alumni and employers, is a challenging task for higher education institutions. It is important for many reasons, such as providing information to policy makers, assessing quality of academic programmes, adapting academic programmes to labour market needs, and marketing purposes. Alumni and employer surveys are usually used as methods for collecting data from stakeholders. Research suggests that major problems in data collection are related to efficiency and effectiveness of data collection process. This paper presents a different method of data collection supported by ICT. A specially designed web portal equipped with advanced alumni tracking and communication features was developed and used for alumni data collection. The web portal was evaluated after a period of real operation by analyzing collected data and conducting an online survey. The evaluation results showed that the web portal could be used as effective, efficient, and useful tool for alumni data collection and communication between alumni and higher education institutions. The purpose of this article is focused on the development of a protocol designed to facilitate the monitoring process of the official degrees of a Spanish university. In response to the criteria and guidelines established in the Royal Decree 1393/2007, this proposal seeks to make available to the focus groups a useful and flexible tool, tailored to the different existing regulations, which assesses progress in the development of the curriculum, ensures the effective implementation of the degrees, and publishes the information available, relevant and appropriate. It also helps to identify weaknesses, potential improvements and best practices for dissemination. All this, with the ultimate aim of assuring the accreditation of Official Degrees. The monitoring protocol articulates the assessment, as a Check-List, in fulfillment of an annual series of indicators set out in the Academic Quality Assurance Systems (AQAS) included in the Proceedings of Degrees. Finally, the monitoring of new degrees comes up as a result of adaptation to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recruiting high-caliber individuals into education programs in higher education institutions to train them to be tomorrow’s educators/teachers has been a perennial challenge. Students in education programs are found to be in general lower in academic standing than their counterparts in other fields, reflecting a seemingly distressing phenomenon of ‘those who cannot, educate’. In contrast to such a discouraging phenomenon, this article shows that in Taiwan, based on a nationally representative data set of 12,246 college students, students in education programs are academically more outstanding than their non-education counterparts. Furthermore, among education majors, those who aspire to be future teachers have even higher academic quality than their non-teaching counterparts. The underlying policy and socio-cultural contexts of such a positive phenomenon of ‘those who can, educate’ are further explained and implications for educators in other countries are discussed. HIGHER education , *EDUCATIONAL quality , *ACADEMIC programs , *SERVICE learning , *BEST practices - Abstract
Quality is a multi-dimensional concept and embraces all functions and activities of higher education (academic programs, research, and community services) in all their features and components. Traditionally quality was a measure of resources and reputation. In recent years there has been a shift in emphasis to institutional best practices such as setting high expectations, providing involving settings, inclusive learning environments and forms of pedagogy that enhance student learning and development. The concept of student engagement is thus receiving increased attention globally as it is viewed as an important element in assessing and improving institutional effectiveness. Trend and longitudinal analyses, as employed in this study, allow an institution to monitor change or stability in performance over time. They assist in determining whether a certain policy or initiative prompted desirable change and in assessing the impact of improvement initiatives such as accreditation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Product degradation is the deterioration of a commodity over time. Since the beginning of the 21st century, higher education in South Carolina has engaged in a process of cutting state funding to higher education. During this process questions emerged on the effects of the cuts on the many education programs that depend on state funding. The purpose of this study was to measure the perceptions of university faculty and administrators' concerning the recent budget cuts in South Carolina and determine if the term product degradation can be appropriately applied to the educational product at state-supported four-year institutions in South Carolina. We discuss in this work the tactics of student access to higher education that have replaced the strategies of knowledge production. It might means lowering standards of academic quality, in Venezuela. This might happens because higher education in Venezuela will become isolated from international tendencies. Meaning to have then country to join a supposedly revolutionary block of nations, made up of Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. If this block can find political and ideological legitimacy it is centered in a pattern of endogenous scientific and technological development that by necessity will drive these countries to isolation from the international tendencies. Knowledge production is understood as alternative ways of producing knowledge and away from standardized patterns prevalent in the modern world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIGHER education , *EDUCATIONAL quality , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges - Abstract
The global expansion of access to higher education has increased demand for information on academic quality and has led to the development of university ranking systems or league tables in many countries of the world. A recent UNESCO/CEPES conference on higher education indicators concluded that cross-national research on these ranking systems could make an important contribution to improving the international market for higher education. The comparison and analysis of national university ranking systems can help address a number of important policy questions. First, is there an emerging international consensus on the measurement of academic quality as reflected in these ranking systems? Second, what impact are the different ranking systems having on university and academic behavior in their respective countries? Finally, are there important public interests that are thus far not reflected in these rankings? If so, is there a needed and appropriate role for public policy in the development and distribution of university ranking systems and what might that role be? This paper explores these questions through a comparative analysis of university rankings in Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deaf students at two institutions of higher education and hearing students taking the same degree programmes completed the Course Experience Questionnaire and a short version of the Approaches to Studying Inventory. The deaf students were just as likely as the hearing students to adopt a meaning orientation to their studies but were more likely to adopt a reproducing orientation. This was particularly true of those deaf students who preferred to communicate through sign language. However, the deaf students evaluated their programmes just as positively as did the hearing students. It is concluded that deafness per se has no impact on students' perceptions of academic quality, and that deafness and perceptions of academic quality are mutually independent determinants of approaches to studying in higher education. Academic quality is defined as the equivalent to academic standards related to student learning outcomes, which consist of specific levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities achieved by students participating in a program. The achievement of academic standards is accommodated by implementing both internal and external quality assurance practices. Internal quality assurance refers to policies and practices used by the higher education institutions to monitor and improve the quality of their education, while external quality assurance refers to policies and practices set up by external parties to assure the quality of higher education institutions and programs. Petra Christian University has built and implemented its internal quality assurance since 2009 based on its unique quality culture. After its ten-year journey and the achievements that Petra Christian University has reached in 2019, the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0 are challenges ahead that Petra Christian University has to face.

The demand for higher education of all types has increased substantially around the world. This has motivated higher-education institutions to expand and improve their services by placing greater emphasis on academic quality and student experience in order to increase student retention and graduation rates. A growing number of educational institutions around the world have adopted undergraduate research because it has been shown to be a high-impact educational practice for students. However, there are many ways to utilize undergraduate research depending on several factors such as learning domain, academic discipline, and field of study as well as learning objectives sought. Therefore, there are different models of undergraduate research being used around the world by colleges and universities. As undergraduate research continues to become more international, higher-education institutions are learning from each other about how best to adopt it within their own institution.

- Abstract
As countries convert from state to market-centered public policies, there is increasing interest in new forms of public accountability. Capacity building initiatives that reform institutional frameworks are useful policy instruments during this period of transition. What are the impacts and implementation problems characteristic of this approach? This article reviews the experience with "Academic Audit," a capacity building accountability instrument for universities adopted in the UK, Sweden, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. Academic audits altered the incentives for cooperative behavior among faculty members to improve student learning. Identified implementation problems included: training for the new process, the uncertainty of capacity building benefits, and the central role of information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many universities around the world rely on student instructors—current bachelor’s and master’s degree students—for tutorial teaching, yet we know nothing about their effectiveness. In a setting with random assignment of instructors to students, we show that student instructors are almost as effective as senior instructors at improving their students’ short- and longer-run academic achievement and labor market outcomes. We find little heterogeneity across different course types, student characteristics, or instructors’ personal academic quality. Our results suggest that the use of student instructors can serve as an effective tool for universities to reduce their costs with negligible negative effects on students.

Introduction: School dropout is a problem that affects higher education and the schools that are part of this educational system. School dropout has increased over time and is closely connected with students’ Quality of Academic Life. Objectives: To test the factorial structure of the Questionnaire of Academic Experience for Portuguese higher education students. Methodology: Quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study. A student socio-demographic background questionnaire and Almeida Soares and Ferreira’s Academic Experiences Questionnaire (QAE) (2002) were used as data collection instruments. The sample consists of 891 students aged between 17 and 40 years, with a mean age of 19.68 years (± 2.34 years). Results: The QAE designed by Almeida, et al. (2002), after validation, was composed of 35 items. Confirmatory factorial analysis demonstrates the validity of its structure in five dimensions: personal, study, interpersonal, career and institutional. Statistics on Quality of Academic Life have an average index of 60.46%; ± 10.02 sd. Female students show higher rates in dimensions such as: personal quality of life, profession/career, study, institutional, and overall quality of life. Male students show higher mean values in the quality of life, interpersonal and career dimensions Conclusions: The results of the present study support the psychometric adequacy of the QAE Almeida, et al. (2002) designed for the Portuguese population, indicating that it can be used in tests conducted in this field of knowledge. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
