Introduction: The Polish cultivar of white mulberry (Morus alba L.) “Żółwińska wielkolistna” is a source of many bioactive substances with a wide spectrum of activities. The leaves of the plant are considered to be a raw material richest in bioactive substances. The unique properties of the plant are primarily due to polyphenols, in particular flavonoids, including: rutin, albanon, kuwanone, which make it possible to use white mulberry as an agent with a wide spectrum of activities, from anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic, antioxidant to antimicrobial. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the method of extracting substances from dried white mulberry leaves on the antibacterial activity of the obtained extracts. Four extraction methods were used to obtain the extracts, and then their antimicrobial activity against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was determined. Methods: Mulberry leaves were collected in September 2021 from an ecological plantation located at the Experimental Station, Institute of Natural Fibers and Medicinal Plants in Poznań – National Research Institute in Pętkowo. Leaves were dried at 60°C for 12 hours, then laboratory analyses were performed. The extraction was carried out by the following methods: 1.) carbon dioxide extraction, 2.) carbon dioxide extraction using a cosolvent, 3.) maceration with carbon dioxide extraction using a cosolvent, 4.) solvent extraction. Then, the antimicrobial activity of the obtained extracts against selected strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was determined. MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) were determined. Results: As a result of the conducted research it was found that there are differences in the antibacterial activites of extracts from dried white mulberry leaves depending on the extraction method used. The highest antibacterial activity both against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was shown by extracts obtained using a supercritical carbon dioxide extractor without the use of cosolventa, with more effective growth-inhibiting and bactericidal effects observed against Gram-positive bacteria compared to Gram-negative bacteria. Conclusions: Extracts obtained from dried leaves of white mulberry (Morus alba L.) of the Polish variety “Żółwińska wielkolistna” have antibacterial properties. This leads to the possibility of using white mulberry in herbal medicine and pharmacology as an antimicrobial agent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CANDIDA tropicalis , *OLDER patients , *MYCOSES , *THERAPEUTICS , *HERBAL medicine , *ANTIFUNGAL agents - Abstract
Introduction: Candida tropicalis is a frequent agent of candidemia in Brazilian hospitals, being the second most commonly isolated species. Infection by this agent can occur in patients of all ages, but it affects adult and elderly patients more frequently. Candidemias are related to animals. Consequently, drugs that affect fungal cells can also affect human cells, making it difficult to treat fungal infections. The increase in resistance to antifungals alerts to the need to expand strategies that prevent their dispersion among fungi, as has already happened with bacteria, which are found to be distributed and out of control. Therefore, new forms of studies on therapeutic alternatives are necessary, herbal medicines can be used as a new treatment option. Objective: to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of the chloroform phase of Raphiodon echinus on Candida tropicalis strains. Metho-dology: the method of determination of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was used on the broth microdilution technique. Results: a MIC50 of 256 µg/mL was obtained for the fungus strains. Conclusion: in this way, it is possible to observe the possible use of this substance for further treatment of diseases caused by Candida tropicalis yeasts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MALVACEAE , *GENETIC toxicology , *SPECIES , *MEDICINAL plants , *HERBAL medicine , *NATURAL products - Abstract
Introduction: Alternative therapies using medicinal plants and herbal medicines have been growing worldwide, as natural treatments have low cost and less toxic effect compared to conventional drugs available. Aim: To evaluate in vitro cytotoxicity and ex-vivo genotoxicity of Brazilian species of the Malvaceae family: Waltheria viscosissima A. St. Hil. In vitro methods were used to verify the cytotoxic potential through hemolytic and antihemolytic assays and the ex-vivo genotoxic analysis. Results: The Crude Etanolic Extract (CEE) and Cloroformic Fraction (CF) was obtained in vegetal sample used on this study; the CEE-Wv and CF-Wv products exhibited the lowest cytotoxic potential with hemolysis less than 40% in all concentrations evaluated. A moderate anti-hemolytic effect was described in all samples treated with 500 and 1000 µg/mL, with hemolysis <60 %. In addition, the compounds showed low ex-vivo genotoxic effect with a general index of normal cells greater than 84 % at all concentrations. Conclusion: The results suggest a low toxic profile of the compounds obtained from species of the Malvaceae family, indicating safe limits for the use of these natural products. Although Brazil is a country with the greatest plant biodiversity, there are still shortcomings regarding phytotherapy studies and their practical application. In Brazil alone there are 65 plants with psychoactive principles, and Heteropterys tomentosa, from the ethnobotanical point of view, is one of the most famous plants in the Midwest region, it is known for its aphrodisiac, physical and mental invigorating and depurative properties. The objective of this review was to point out the number of scientific articles published about the benefits of using the plant H. aphrodisiac in interactions with the musculoskeletal system. A consultation was performed in 10 databases: Embase, Scopus, Pubmed, Livivo, Science Direct, Web of science, Cochrane, Koreamed, Lilacs and Clinical trials for the elaboration of a systematic review, for this there was no limitation of time, language or type of study. Results: the search described found 111 articles, all primary studies; of these only 5 original studies (4.5%) were included in the review. Positive adaptations were observed in bones, tendons, muscles and hormone release, which resulted in improvements in exercise time and load, delaying fatigue and increasing functional capacity. However, the scarcity of studies, pointed out several gaps, opening space for other works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SHEEP farming , *VEGETABLE oils , *HERBAL medicine , *DISTILLED water , *NEMATODES , *HAEMONCHUS contortus - Abstract
Anthelmintic resistance has been a major obstacle in sheep farming, given this problem, other tools have been used as an alternative to control gastrointestinal parasites, among them, herbal medicine with the use of vegetable oils and extracts stands out. The objective of the present work was to evaluate in vitro the bioactivity of the aqueous extract of the leaves of Hyptis suaveolens (L.) Poit (Lamiaceae) on gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. Three dilutions of the aqueous extract were tested: 100%, 50% and 25% with three repetitions per treatment, forming two control groups, a negative control (distilled water) and positive control (Albendazole). The negative control larvae cultures revealed infective larvae of the genus Haemonchus, Oesophagostomum and Trichostrongylus, with a predominance of the first genus. The aqueous extract of the leaves of H. suaveolens at a concentration of 100% showed effective in vitro bioactivity against gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The indiscriminate use of antibiotics has contributed to the emergence of multiresistant bacteria. Faced with this, the search for antibiotics from plants has proven to be a promising alternative. The objective of this work was to isolate and identify Staphylococcus sp. resistant to methicillin of the ocular surface of dogs with ophthalmopathies and to evaluate its susceptibility to alcoholic extract of the bark and hexane extract of the pulp of Caryocar brasiliense. Biological material was collected from the ocular surface of 21 dogs presenting ophthalmopathies. We isolated 64 S. pseudintermedius, among these, 4 isolates were identified as methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP). The alcoholic extract of C. brasiliense peel was able to inhibit the bacterial growth of MRSP isolates at a concentration of 2.2%. Thus, the extract from the C. brasiliense peel has antimicrobial potential and represents an alternative in the control of MRSP.

TUKEY'S test , *BANANAS , *OPACITY (Optics) , *HERBAL medicine , *CELL culture , *TRADITIONAL medicine - Abstract
Traditional herbal remedies are naturally occurring, plant-derived substances with limited to no chemical processing and have been used in local or national healing traditions to treat illness. In global health debates, traditional herbal medicines are gaining considerable attention. Many hope new research into herbal medicine will play a vital role in global health. Countries like China, India, Nigeria, USA, and also the World Health Organization (WHO) made large investments in ancient herbal medicines. Currently, the use of the Indonesian plant has dramatically improved the medical and dentistry field. The dental and oral care is often related to wounds, and the Ambonese banana stem has been proven as an effective treatment for these injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the Ambonese banana stem sap through cytotoxicity tests on the fibroblast cell culture of Baby Hamster Kidney-21 (BHK-21). This study was carried out on three BHK-21 fibroblast cell culture, namely, the media and cell control, and the Ambonese banana stem sap with a concentration of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60 %, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100% incubated for 24 hours at 37ºC and 5% CO2. Then, MTT was evenly dispersed on the media to obtain accurate optical density value. All quantitative data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD Test. The result showed significant differences in optical density values between groups with p = 0.000 (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between the cell control and the Ambonese banana stem sap group with concentrations of 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 30%, 20%, and 10%. It was also observed that the Ambonese banana stem sap is nontoxic to fibroblast cells since its viability value was more than 60%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The use of plants in herbal medicine is an alternative to traditional medicine due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, potentially effective in the healing process. Objective: The study evaluated, by histological analysis, the potential of aqueous extracts of Psidium guajava and Myrciaria cauliflora in the repair of second intention wounds. Method: Twenty adult female Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups of five animals each. The animals received daily topical treatment in 6 mm diameter lesions. The groups were: Positive Control (CP) - aqueous solution of Bepantol® 5%; Negative Control (CN) - sterile bidistilled water; Experimental Groups (GO) - aqueous extract of guava stem bark at 10% and (JU) - aqueous extract of jabuticaba leaf at 1 g/mL. Five and ten days after injury, tissue fragments containing the wound were collected and fixed in formalin. Sections of 5 μm thickness were performed and stained with HematoxylinEosin for analysis by microscopy. From a qualitative analysis there are no differences in the kinetics of wound closure, since the use aqueous extract and Bepantol®, allowed faster reepithelization and fewer acute inflammatory cells. At 10 days, in JU group, an advanced repair process was observed, with good vascularization and low inflammation, and in the GO group, scar formation is suggested to be smaller than that of the other groups, with deposition of collagen fibers closer to the intact skin. Conclusion: Considering the results obtained in the present study, at day 5 and day10, there is no evidence that any treatment was in fact impacting and significantly altering the woud healing. The same was done through a bibliographical research and data collection of the main phytotherapics marketed in that establishment, through the control of sales and delivery of these medicines. The study of obesity in contemporary society has been playing an increasingly important role over the years. During the last two decades, changes in the social and economic structure of society, such as the processes of modernization, urbanization and all technological innovations, have led to changes in daily habits. Obesity is currently one of the most serious public health problems in the world, being a progressive and chronic disease, characterized by the excessive accumulation of adipose tissue in the individual, due to the imbalance between the exaggerated calorie intake and the lower energy expenditure, evidencing a increase the mass of fat in the body. It is vital that obesity is recognized as a public health problem, and can be started at any age and described as a multifactorial disease of origin. In the face of this problem, alternative therapies arise, in which phytotherapy is emphasized, which enables both slimming, acting through the "fat cell break" (lipolysis) and in the balance of the physiological functions of the organism, as well as helping in the reestablishment of self-esteem, since it is very compromised when associated with obesity. - Abstract
The cancer also known as neoplasia, are invading cells, characterized by the progressive and abnormal increase of the cells. It is known that the treatment for this type of disease is usually done through radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgeries. In order to treat several diseases, including cancer, there is a progressive increase in the use of herbal medicines in medicine. Faced with this growth, not only the population, but also health professionals need reliable information about the possibilities of herbal medicines. The objective of this work was to report the use of plants, as complementary therapy in the treatment of cancers, emphasizing that this work is relevant due to the large number of people who are affected by various types of neoplasias today, since it is a pathology that does not discriminate age, sex and ethnicity. The work proceeded from a bibliographical review on the theme medicinal plants for the alternative treatment of cancers. Medicinal plants are considered to have definite effects on diseases or symptoms. Knows itself the importance of medicinal plants in the treatment of diseases, including cancer. With this, the present work came to contribute with the knowledge about certain indications of some plants very used in Brazil and in the world. More studies with various medicinal plants are needed in order to discover new plants that are effective in this treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of medicinal plants by the Brazilian population is a traditional practice, and is often the only resource used in basic health care. Within the context of the new instrumental analytical techniques, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy stands out, being used mainly for areas where the rapid profile of constituents is indispensable. The medicinal plants used in this study were: Brazilian arnica (Solidago microglossa D. C.), chamomile (Chamomilla recutita (L.) Rauschert), Chilean boldo (Peumus boldus Molina), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and Brazilian ginseng (Pfaffia Paniculata (Martius) Kuntze). This work aims to qualitatively analyze, through X ray fluorescence, the elemental composition of selected medicinal plants that are commonly marketed in the state of Rio de Janeiro. By means of the generated energy spectra, Ca, K, Fe, Zn, Ni, among others, were observed. The Chilean boldo, camomila and arnica samples presented a large number of photon counts for Ca and K, while the lemongrass showed a high number of photons for Fe and Ni. However, one of Chilean boldo samples was highlighted as worrying, due to peak in the spectrum, referring to energy that corresponds to a heavy metal, lead (Pb). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Finalmente, é importante conhecer o enquadramento legal dos produtos à base de plantas e dos suplementos alimentares Despite the undeniable success of a scientific approach to the treatment of diseases through pharmaceutical products, the last decades have witnessed a spectacular increase in herbal medicines interest. This was followed by increased scientific and commercial attention and led to the emergence of the term ethnopharmacology to describe scientific discipline. Currently, we must emphazise that the use of ‘’traditional'' methods, known since several centuries by our ancestors, including homeopathy, acunpuncture, aromatherapy and herbal medicine, have raised. Regarding herbal medicine scientific studies are needed to further demonstrate and characterize the properties of plants in human medicine and veterinary medicine. In veterinary medicine the use of herbal medicine has already been addressed in horses and pets, in the treatment of dermatological, digestive tract, respiratory tract disorders, and behavioral problems in the management of separation anxiety of the dog. In cattle, the use of herbal medicine was described in the treatment of endometritis after delivery, and in the treatment of nipples, however, studies on the application of medicinal plants in this species are scarce. The increased interest by western societies in using medicinal products rather than pharmaceutical industry product may by justified from a sanitary, societal, ecological point of view. In fact, excessive use of drugs such as antiparasitics and antibiotics leads to the appearance of resistance to treatments, a global problem, in the scope of ‘’One Health’’ concept. Regarding cattle medicinal plants application there are few studies. In the area of the bovine clinic its use will also be related to the advantages over allopathic treatments which are expensive and have some relevant iatrogenic effects. This review aims to address the herbal medicine application to cattle, and aims to deepen knowledge about the application of medicinal plants and herbal products in this species. It is intended to characterize these plants with regard to their constituents, pharmacological activity, clinical efficacy, as well as their toxicity. Finally, it is important to know the legal framework for herbal products and food supplements.

Method: This is a systematic literature review, which aimed to analyze the most recent articles published between the years 2005-2020 in the languages: English and Portuguese. The studies were chosen in an integrative way from the following databases: PubMed (National Library of Medicine), LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature), Science Direct (Explore, scientific and medical) and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online). Results and discussion: 115 species distributed in 50 botanical families were found in antiplasmodial inhibition studies, of which 66 different types of extracts showed action in eliminating these parasites, while 59 of these extracts were inactive. Of this total number, the most studied species belong to the Asteraceae and Fabaceae families. In addition, another 141 botanical species were cited in ethnobotanical surveys in different regions of the world. Aponynaceae and Lamiaceae were the most representative plant families among the studies focused on this topic. The data also allowed us to understand how popular knowledge can help to establish scientific discoveries about plants with antimalarial potential. In addition, environmental conditions were identified as determining factors for the production of chemical constituents in these plants. Conclusion: Efforts to identify plants with active potential in combating the parasite have increased significantly in recent years; however, it is important to emphasize that the preservation of biodiversity needs to be an important aspect of ethnobotanical research in order to guarantee the sustainable use of available resources. - Abstract
The objective was to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of different formulations of herbal candidates, produced from leafs of caamembeca (Polygala spectabilis - EFC) and common fig (Ficus carica - EFF). Extracts were produced with 30 days of percolation at 4°C and lyophilized; subsequently they were used to perform the phytochemical march, toxicity test and antioxidant test. The antibacterial bioassay was performed against Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus using dilution with exponential concentrations (20 µg.ml-1-2560 µg.ml-1) of the extracts. Several compounds with antimicrobial properties were determined in phytochemical analysis. The antioxidant activity measured at 640 ug/ml, compared to the ascorbic acid was 68.4% for the EFC while for the EFF was 89.9%. The EFF was efficacious in different concentrations, against all bacteria tested, with the minimum bacterial concentration (MBC) of 1280; 2560; 1280 e 320 µg/ml, to C. perfringens, E. coli, P. aeruginosa e S. aureus, however the EFC only acted against S. aureus, with 2560 ug/ml MBC. The results of the biochemical tests, along with those found in in vitro tests showed that the EFF may be considered as an antimicrobial candidate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Haemonchus contortus is responsible for significant economic losses in sheep and goat production, resulting in low growth and anaemia in infected animals. The aim of this study was to determine the in vitro efficacy of hydroalcoholic extract of Artemisia annua against free-living stages of this parasite. The herbal material was produced by leaving the solution for 7 days (extraction period) at 4°C and latter the material was lyophilized. After this, the product was used for the egg hatch test (EHT) and the larval development test (LDT) in different concentrations (0.78 to 50 mg/mL) with six replicates. A complete phytochemical screening was performed to analyze the materials' chemistry composition. Artemisia annua had an efficacy of 93.22% (±1.87) using the EHT and of 90.33% (±0.27%) when using the LDT test, both in concentration 50 mg/ml. Phytochemical tests showed few chemical compounds that could exert anthelmintic properties. The results obtained with the biochemical tests together with the dose-dependent effect found in in vitro tests demonstrate that the A. annua extract used has the potential to be a good drug candidate against H. contortus. Further studies should be conducted to maximize the effectiveness of the extractions from A. annua. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and is considered a disturbance in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, due to lack of insulin produced by the pancreas and / or reduction in its action. This condition is the sixth leading cause of hospitalization as primary diagnosis and contributes up to 50% to other causes such as heart diseases, stroke and hypertension, among others. An alternative treatment, which in recent years had an increase in interest and research, is the herbal medicine, which can be equalled and added to conventional therapy. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the use of medicinal plants in treating individuals with diabetes mellitus in the city of Herval D' Oeste, Santa Catarina State, Brazil and also present the importance of safe intake of medicinal plants. The obtained results showed that consumption of medicinal plants occurs erroneously, where only 19% of the cited plants had scientific evidence for diabetes therapy. In addition, most users of medicinal plants (89.4%) choose the plant species by family culture. Thus, further research focused on this therapy is needed, as well as further information to the public and health professionals regarding the correct use of plants, preparation and quantity to be ingested.

A descriptive cross-sectional study on the use of herbal medicine in odontology and the information level of professionals in this field about oral diseases treated with herbal remedies was conducted, taking into account that this treatment is a natural, effective and of low cost. The data obtained in this respect from interviews and surveys revealed that the plants more used by them as alternative medicine were guava, camomile and greater plantain, but they hardly knew the active ingredients of these natural products, and neither used others with scientific properties validated as curative of periodontopathies, so that it was recommended to extend the use of a greater number of herbal remedies to which odontologists and population in general have easy access.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome, non-inflammatory, of unknown etiology, manifested in the musculoskeletal system, and may present symptoms in other systems. With a controversial definition, mainly due to the absence of anatomical substrate in its pathophysiology and symptoms easily confused with depression and chronic fatigue syndrome, the diagnosis is difficult. Thus, the aim of the present study was to carry out a literature review to determine the effect of the association of acupuncture with herbal medicines as a technique to be used to relieve pain and improve the quality of life in individuals with fibromyalgia. For this purpose, a literature review on the subject was carried out in the academic Google and PubMed databases between the years 1956 to 2021. Alternative and complementary medicine has been much sought after in recent years, especially by fibromyalgia patients, in which isolated conventional therapy has shown limited benefits and requires a multidisciplinary treatment. Among the alternative techniques, acupuncture, which is an ancient technique based on the stimulation of specific points of the body aiming at a therapeutic or homeostatic effect, through a reflex therapy in which the nociceptive stimulus given to the point triggers responses in other areas of the body, acting in the reduction effectively of pain, which allows to improve the quality of life of fibromyalgia patients. Herbal medicines, on the other hand, which are industrialized products obtained from medicinal plants, have great therapeutic potential in the treatment of pain and with this perspective, several studies have been conducted in the search for new treatment alternatives for patients with these pathologies.

Herbal medicine is a science that studies the action of plants in therapeutic use and the drugs produced from this study are called herbal medicines. Drug interactions (IM) can affect the efficacy and safety of treatment with herbal medicines, therefore, their use must occur correctly, effectively and safely. The objective was to identify potential drug interactions between drugs and herbal medicines based on Ginkgo biloba (GB) and Valeriana officinalis (VO), as well as the potential adverse events of these interactions. The proposed study is based on an analysis of the use of some herbal medicines with allopathic medicines, being a search in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE/PubMed), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) databases and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Academic Google, with the proposed time period from 2010 to 2020, using as descriptors: Drug Interaction Ginkgo biloba, Drug Interaction Valeriana officinalis. Including interactions that appear in the IBM Micromedex® interactions program and excluding interactions of light severity and/or that are not included in the program. IM potentials of GB were identified with anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant drugs, increasing the risk of bleeding, and UM potential of VO with drugs and depression of the central nervous system. The use of these herbal medicines needs monitoring, especially when the patient is already using polypharmacy.
