Infrastructure development cannot take place without gravel, which is scarce in the North American Arctic. Conditioning where development can occur, the commodity has become the target of Indigenous actors seeking to secure land and resource bases and their material futures, too. In Alaska, decades of litigation pitting Indigenous surface versus subsurface corporate landholders has contested gravel's legal location. In Canada, contrastingly, Inuvialuit land claims negotiators successfully secured access to granular resources. In both locales, legal processes have resulted in certain Indigenous actors' accumulation of geologic power. Rooted in the subterranean, this power enables them to transform the surface of the Earth. Contributing to research on geologic power and political geology and drawing on fieldwork and a review of court cases, policy documents and reports, this article critiques how gravel has become an Arctic resource lucrative to local communities rather than global markets and a key source of Indigenous political and economic agency. Excavating what Jeffrey Cohen [2015. "Stone: An ecology of the inhuman." Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press] calls "lithic ecomateriality," in this paper we illustrate how rocks have traditionally been conceptualized through three tropes: rocks as insensate; rocks as personified; and rocks as transformative. We take up the concept of inhuman to challenge human-centric taxonomies of rocks and animacy. If rocks are not lifeless, or only considered as "resources" or "threats," to humans, then thinking with rocks as vital extends our ethical and political response. In the final section of the paper, we consider archives, not as a logical form of organizing knowledge, but as material, vital, and affective. We argue that when stones and archives are examined as something more than stable things--as interfactual, transcorporeal, and transmaterial co-compositions--different ethical relatings to the inhuman world become possible.

From the late 1940s to the late 1950s, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) turned vigorously to the Arctic archipelago, expanding and confirming the colonial premise that the islands of the High Arctic were an extractive frontier for oil and gas. In this paper, the first of a planned pair, we show how the efforts of the GSC were hugely consequential for subsequent corporate hydrocarbon exploration, but were also intimately entangled with other, concurrent strands of militarization and Arctic colonialism. Numerous histories celebrate GSC geologists as heroic pioneers of extraction and northern field science. Both the militarization of the Arctic in the 1950s and the concurrent, infamous High Arctic Relocations have been discussed at length. This paper has a more precise, interstitial objective: to show that the GSC's fieldwork depended on both the infrastructure of Cold War geopolitics and the labour of Inuit who were moved to the region under duress—particularly to the new community of Qausuittuq (Resolute). Regardless of specific commercial outcomes, the version and vision of the Arctic installed by the GSC continues to foreground certain future geographies of the archipelago, while forestalling or marginalizing others. Key messages: The intensive efforts of the Geological Survey of Canada in the middle of the 20th century solidified the southern understanding of the Arctic archipelago as a potential extractive frontier.This mid‐century geological fieldwork was entangled with Cold War militarization and dependent on the coerced relocation of Inuit to the High Arctic.The practices and productions of this fieldwork continue to shape some versions of the Arctic future while forestalling or marginalizing others. The productivity of milling circuits is sensitive to the size of mill feed. Uncertainty about the size of caved ore presents unique challenges to forecasting and controlling mill throughput rates. Part I of this paper showed how fragmentation size and hang-up frequency relate to geology, proximity of drawpoints to the cave boundary and the height of draw at the New Afton mine. The second part, presented here, investigates the impact of varying caved fragment size on mill performance. Analysis of historical mine and mill data showed that mill feed size and subsequently mill throughput are sensitive to the areas being mucked within the cave. Fragmentation measurements of drawpoint muck, comminution tests and calibrated mill models were used to assess the impact of variations in feed size and hardness on New Afton mill performance. From the late 19th to the late 20th century, the cities and industries of the world became increasingly reliant on fireproof materials made from asbestos. In focusing on the town of Asbestos, Canada, this paper will show how this process of market boom and bust shaped a fierce local culture rooted in working and living on a rapidly changing environment. By analyzing the successive expansions of the giant mine located in the centre of Asbestos, this paper will highlight how unique understandings of self and place develop in mining communities and form a complex culture rooted in a constantly changing environment. This paper relates developments in the science of geology to forms of governmental rationality in Canada during the late nineteenth century. By so doing it opens for discussion a topic rarely broached by political theorists: the role that the earth sciences played in the historical evolution of forms of political rationality. The paper contests theoretical approaches that understand the relation between scientific knowledge and state rationality as only instrumental. Instead, the paper demonstrates how attending to the temporality of science (as evident in the emergence of specifically geological ways of seeing nature during the period) helps us understand the ways in which science is constitutive of political rationality, rather than merely its instrument. This argument is developed through a critique of Michel Foucault’s concept of ‘governmentality’, a concept that historicizes political rationality, yet remains silent on how the physical sciences contributed to its varied forms. In this paper, I propose a new geoscience paradigm for evaluating potential carbon-sequestration targets. I introduce the term carbon-sequestration geosystem to study and describe portions of sedimentary basins where all the geologic components necessary for the safe and long-term storage of CO 2 are present. The purpose of this type of analysis, most appropriately applied at a basin-screening stage, is to derive a holistic, genetic, and predictive understanding of the geology – the depositional systems, structural setting and other factors that are direct controls on storage, injectivity, potential for induced seismicity, and other critical factors. To illustrate the concepts, I present a re-evaluation of the geologic carbon-sequestration options in Southern Ontario (Canada) where business and environmental needs, mostly associated with hard-to-abate industries, require urgent action. Legacy wireline-logs, core, and outcrop data are the main data sources available in this onshore setting. The results of this new, independent study are broadly similar to those of previous studies: the Cambrian section, a saline aquifer, is the most likely candidate to be a CO 2 repository. However, the methodology used identified several issues (e.g., stratigraphic heterogeneity, proximity to basement) that will need addressing by targeted data collection and/or analysis before site-selection for a test should be undertaken. In this paper, we briefly describe the Argus spectrometer and its mission. We then focus on the process to determine the geolocation of the spectrometer's flight data. For the Canadian Advanced Nanospace eXperiment 2 (CanX-2) Argus flight, we have used Simplified General Perturbations 4 (SGP4) propagation for position determination. Two sets of flight data are presented as examples. We estimate the uncertainty in the geolocation of Argus data using this method and investigate potential improvements for future Argus flights. Natural colloids in groundwater could facilitate radionuclide transport, provided the colloids are mobile, are present in sufficient concentrations and can adsorb radionuclides. This paper describes the results of a laboratory migration study carried out with combinations of radionuclides and natural colloids within a fracture in a large granite block to experimentally determine the impact of colloids on radionuclide transport. The 85Sr used in this study is an example of a moderately sorbing radionuclide, while the 241Am is typical of a strongly sorbed radionuclide with very low solubility. The natural colloids used in this study were isolated from granite groundwater from Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) Underground Research Laboratory (URL), and consisted of mostly 1-10 nm organic colloids, along with lesser amounts of 10-450 nm colloids (organics and aluminosilicates). The measured coefficients for radionuclide sorption onto these colloids were between 3 x 10(2) and 1 x 10(3) ml/g for 85Sr, and between 7 x 10(4) and 7 x 10(5) mg/l for 241Am. The 85Sr sorption on the natural colloids appeared to be reversible. Migration experiments in the granite block were carried out by establishing a flow field between two boreholes (out of a total of nine) intersecting a main horizontal fracture. These experiments showed that dissolved 85Sr behaved as a moderately sorbing tracer, while dissolved 241Am was completely adsorbed by the fracture surfaces and showed no evidence of transport. However, when natural colloids were injected together with dissolved 241Am, a small amount of 241Am transport was observed, demonstrating the ability of natural colloids to facilitate the transport of radionuclides with low solubility. Natural colloids had only a minor effect on the transport of 85Sr. In a separate experiment to test the effect of higher colloid concentrations on 85Sr migration, synthetic colloids were produced from Avonlea bentonite. The introduction of a relatively high concentration of bentonite colloids actually reduced 85Sr transport because, compared to natural colloids, the bentonite colloids were less mobile and they sorbed 85Sr more strongly.

Lindsay Limestone is an argillaceous limestone encountered in Southern Ontario, Canada. The Lindsay formation is regarded as a suitable geologic medium for the construction of a Deep Geologic Repository for storing low to intermediate level nuclear waste. The Lindsay Limestone is a nodular argillaceous rock with very low permeability, requiring the use of hydraulic pulse tests for the measurement of its permeability characteristics. The paper describes the triaxial testing facility, the theoretical basis for the test and the procedures used to analyze the experimental results for estimating the permeability of the Lindsay Limestone. Nova Scotia possesses a varied and complex geology with many distinct formations in a distinct metallogeny containing many metallogenic units, some of which have a rich and diverse mineral endowment. One such unit would be the Meguma Zone that contains several active mines and prospects with gold and associated minerals of economic interest including several prospects either planned or about to enter production. This paper relates some of the experiences and observations completed during a 15-year period as the provinces' geochemist. My duties included supervising and designing several geochemical databases to assess this rich mineral endowment for economic potential. Several geochemical surveys completed at different scales and in different media facilitate a review of the gold potential within the Meguma Zone lithologies with new areas identified for additional consideration for exploration work presented in the accompanying talk. Presently much interest is held in the traditional Meguma targets of saddle reef quartz-vein systems now eclipsed by the more recent interest in sediment-hosted targets with a similar geology to the Moose River deposit of Atlantic Gold. Another gold environment makes up the three potential target areas in the Meguma - that of shear zone-hosted deposits within the intrusive granitic suites. Several case history examples are given for cost-effective methods for exploration in the Meguma Zone, including soil, till, vegetation, and lake sediments ranging in scale from reconnaissance to prospect scale studies. This article presents a history of the development of U–Pb geochronology with emphasis on the role of Canadian researchers and some of its applications to Canadian geology. Modern U–Pb dating is the result of work by many individuals over the past 60 years, but the most important was Tom Krogh, who established methods that allowed determination of precise ages (<0.1% errors) on zircon using isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry. This was followed by the introduction of new analytical approaches by others, notably secondary ion mass spectrometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry that allow intracrystal domains to be dated. U–Pb geochronology is now an indispensable tool for understanding the Earth. In collaboration with field mapping, it has vastly improved our understanding of the geological history of Canada as well as important geological events such as mass extinctions, secular changes in geological processes, and the birth of the solar system. Abstract: The Archean western Superior Province in Canada represents the nucleus of the North American continent whose origin has been speculated to be the result of widespread crustal accretion some 2.7Ga ago. In this paper, crustal and upper-mantle seismic discontinuities beneath the western Superior Province of the Canadian shield are imaged with teleseismic P-to-S and S-to-P converted phases using the receiver function method. Three crustal discontinuities are observed: the Moho, ranging in depth between 38 and 47km and dipping to the south; and two intra-crustal discontinuities having depths of approximately 15 and 30km. The crustal discontinuities undulate laterally and often lose continuity, possibly indicating an imbricated structure and/or regions of velocity gradients. In the shallow lithosphere, a positive discontinuity is imaged at approximately 65km depth and is consistent with earlier refraction and wide-angle reflection results. Additionally, two zones of negative receiver function amplitudes at 55km depth are observed and are coincident with a region of anomalous tomographic low P- and S-wave velocities as well as a zone of high electrical conductivity. The images for the crust and shallow upper-mantle, when integrated with previous geophysical studies, are consistent with ideas of continental root formation due to imbrication of Archean subducted material and accretion of island arcs observed in surface geology. The Fire Lake formation of the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the Finlayson Lake region, Yukon, Canada, consists primarily of Late Devonian (ca. 365–360 Ma) mafic metavolcanic rocks and smaller volumes of mafic and ultramafic subvolcanic metamorphosed intrusions. In this paper, field, geochemical, and Nd isotope attributes of these rocks are presented in an attempt to understand their tectonic setting, the magmatic processes involved in their formation, and their roles in Cordilleran crustal growth. The mafic rocks of the Fire Lake formation exhibit a wide diversity of geochemical signatures and are classified into seven chemically defined suites: (1) backarc-basin basalt, (2) enriched mid-oceanic-ridge basalt (E-MORB), (3) oceanic-island basalt (OIB), (4) Th-rich OIB, (5) boninite, (6) island-arc tholeiite, and (7) fight rare earth element (LREE)—enriched island-arc tholeiite. The diversity of geochemical signatures is interpreted to represent variable mixtures of asthenospheric (MORB-type) mantle, subarc mantle wedge, and lithospheric (OIB-type) mantle with or without elemental contributions from the subducted slab and/or continental crust. These suites of rocks are also associated with fine-grained basinal sedimentary facies, variations in metavolcanic and metasedimentary unit thickness, extensional synvolcanic faults, and apparent extensional-fault—controlled emplacement of mafic intrusive rocks and hydrothermal volcanic-hosted massive sulfide mineralization. The suites also exhibit a broad spatial distribution; those with “arc” signatures (Nb/Thmn. < 1; mn—normalized to primitive mantle values) are located primarily in the western parts of the formation, and suites with “nonarc” signatures (Sb/Thmn ≥ 1) are located primarily within the eastern parts of the formation. Collectively, these geologic and geochemical attributes are interpreted to stem from the transition from arc magmatism to the initiation of an extensional backarc basinal environment associated with an east-dipping subduction zone. The initiation of backarc-basin magmatism recorded in the Fire Lake formation was part of a much larger Late Devonian backarc basinal system forming along the western edge of the margin of North America. The Fire Lake formation is interpreted to represent (1) the commencement of Yukon-Tanana arc rifting and separation from the North American cratonic margin, and (2) the initiation of a marginal (backarc) basin (now the Slide Mountain terrane) inboard of the Yukon-Tanana arc system. This tectonic evolution likely occurred either as a result of slab rollback toward the west within the convergent margin responsible for Yukon-Tanana arc activity or as a result of the propagation of the Slide Mountain backarc-basin spreading ridges into the Yukon-Tanana arc system. This Yukon-Tanana arc rifting episode was also broadly coincident with rifting and hydrothermal activity within rocks of the North American craton. The geochemical and isotopic signatures of magmatic rocks in the Fire Lake formation have some features similar to intraoceanie arc rocks (e.g., boninites, island-arc tholeiites), and many have juvenile Nd isotope signatures (i.e., εNd(t) > 0; most have εNd(t) > +5), suggesting that the pericratonic terranes of the northern Cordillera have a significant juvenile component. If this is the case throughout the Yukon-Tanana terrane, then the pericratonic terranes may have contributed much more juvenile material to Cordilleran crustal growth in the Phanerozoic than has previously been considered. The remote-sensing study of an exhumed upper Paleozoic surface in the southern Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec has provided indirect evidence for the presence of a previously unidentified post-Acadian (post—Middle Devonian orogeny) graben-fill unit. Subsequent work on stratigraphic sections in that area confirms that the graben-fill unit, the new Saint-Jules Formation, is indeed petrographically distinct and older than previously documented upper Paleozoic strata in that area, which were collectively assigned to the Viséan (Upper Mississippian) Bonaventure Formation. Paleogeographic reconstruction from sedimentary facies, paleocurrent, and provenance studies concurs with the geometric detail that was provided by the preliminary geomorphic study. The present paper therefore presents the case study of an upper Paleozoic stratigraphic unit that was first inferred by geomorphic constraints prior to being recognized in the field through the study of stratigraphic sections. A petroleum pool, that has a common petroleum/water contact and a distinctive pressure regime, is a fundamental unit of petroleum accumulation, and can be treated as a natural object. The prediction of the undiscovered petroleum pool locations can be performed employing a method similar to that used to predict sand channels in a clastic reservoir formation. This paper presents an example for the prediction of possible locations of undiscovered petroleum pools in the western Sverdrup Basin, Arctic Canada using an object-based model. This model simultaneously considers the information from the basic geological conditions for the formation of petroleum pools and the spatial correlation among the pools. The simulated results indicate that the object-based model improves predictions of petroleum occurrences by incorporating spatial correlation information into the model and by checking the consistency of the model with geological constraints. Utilizing a combination of conodont-based biostratigraphy and geochemistry, the Frasnian–Famennian (F/F, mid-Late Devonian) boundary was located in the Long Rapids Formation, northern Ontario. It is present in a black shale sequence, 21.46 m above the base of the Long Rapids Formation, just above a carbonate bed that has similarities to the Upper Kellwasser Limestone, recognized as a lithological marker for the F/F boundary in Germany, Belgium, and France. There is no evidence of an impact event, and sedimentation across the boundary is continuous, although there is a discontinuity layer just below the boundary and the early part of the linguiformis Zone (of the standard Late Devonian conodont zonation) is missing. Strong positive δ [sup 13] C (organic and carbonate) values were identified and are interpreted as evidence of mass mortality in anoxic waters at the F/F extinction; positive δ[sup 18] O values suggest the extinction was also accompanied by a temperature drop. Negative δ[sup 34] S values also indicate anoxia, and negative δ[sup 15] N values provide evidence of reduced surface-water productivity. No iridium anomaly was found at the boundary, although higher than usual values were found about 85 cm below the F/F boundary. Sedimentological and biological evidence in the Long Rapids Formation indicates that the F/F extinction was coincident with major sea-level fluctuations in the late Frasnian, including a transgression beginning at the end of the linguiformis Zone and continuing through the Early triangularis Zone and beyond. Marine oscillations were accompanied by anoxia, which appears to be the killing mechanism for the conodont and other end Frasnian extinctions.La limite Frasnien–Famennien (F/F, Dévonien tardif moyen) a été localisée dans la Formation de Long Rapids, au nord de l'Ontario, en utilisant une combinaison de géochimie et de biostratigraphie basée sur les conodontes. The Paleoproterozoic southeastern Churchill Province (SECP) is located in the northeastern Canadian Shield of Labrador and Quebec. The SECP formed through the oblique collisions of the Archean Nain and Superior cratons with a third intervening Archean block, the core zone. The belt has a tripartite structure, comprising the Torngat Orogen (TO) formed by Nain craton – core zone collision in the east, the core zone in the centre, and the New Quebec Orogen (NQO) formed by Superior craton – core zone collision in the west. The SECP thus records transpressional development on the flanks of the Superior and Nain cratons as they indented northwards to form the larger Trans-Hudson – Nagssugtoqidian orogenic belt to the north. Principal stages of tectonic development were (1) 2.2–2.1 Ga crustal rifting of Nain and Superior cratons; (2) ca. 1.9 Ga subduction under eastern Nain craton; (3) ca. 1.87–1.85 Ga collision of Nain craton and core zone to form the TO; (4) 1.845–1.820 Ga sinistral transpression in the TO, and subduction under the western core zone; and (5) 1.82–1.77 Ga collision of Superior craton and core zone to form the NQO, in association with dextral transpression. Crustal-scale cross sections of the SECP have been developed from reflection and refraction seismic data. The western part of the NQO is dominantly west-vergent and associated with an imbricate thick-skinned thrust stack that ramps from the base of the crust. The core zone is characterized by a 35–40 km thick crust and pervasive east-dipping fabrics related to westerly thrusting. The TO is a narrow, doubly vergent belt, associated with a 48 km thick crust that forms a crustal root with a Moho relief of 12 km. The root is interpreted to result from attempted subduction of the core zone under the Nain craton, possibly as a result of mid-crustal wedging by the Nain craton. The TO was the site of intense convergence that resulted in excision of juvenile crust, possibly including tectonic removal of the axial magmatic arc. As a result, the middle to lower levels of the SECP consist largely of refractory Archean lithosphere. This may account for the lack of widespread post-collisional plutonism in the SECP and the preservation of the TO root.Le sud-est de la Province de Churchill (SECP, Southeastern Churchill Province; Paléoprotérozoïque) est situé dans le nord-est du Bouclier canadien, au Labrador et au Québec. Le SECP a été formé par des collisions obliques entre les cratons archéens de Nain et du Supérieur et un troisième bloc archéen intermédiaire, la zone noyau. The character of the Paleozoic basement of Quesnel Terrane and the position of the terrane accretion surface that separates Quesnel and Kootenay terranes from rocks of the ancient North American margin are subjects of debate. To address these problems, detailed mapping and U–Pb geochronologic studies were carried out in the Christina Lake area to define the relationship of the Mollie Creek assemblage, Josh Creek diorite, and Fife diorite to similar lithologies in the Greenwood – Grand Forks and Rossland regions, and to place limits on the ages of regional deformation and local position of the terrane accretion surface. Deformed metasedimentary rocks of the Mollie Creek assemblage may correlate with sedimentary rocks of the Pennsylvanian to Early Triassic Mount Roberts Formation in the Rossland area. The Mollie Creek assemblage is intruded by the foliated Late Triassic Josh Creek diorite. The Josh Creek diorite and Mollie Creek assemblage have been deformed together as a result of phase two deformation, following the intrusion of the Josh Creek diorite in the Late Triassic and prior to the intrusion of the Fife diorite and deposition of the overlying Rossland Group in the Early Jurassic. Based on relative age, structural position, and lithological similarities to other units within Quesnel Terrane, the Mollie Creek assemblage, Josh Creek diorite, and Fife diorite are a part of Quesnel Terrane and lie above the terrane accretion surface in the Christina Lake area. Therefore, Quesnel Terrane does not unconformably overlie basement rocks of known North American affinity in this region.Le caractère du socle paléozoïque du terrane de Quesnel et la position de la surface d'accrétion du terrane qui sépare les terranes de Quesnel et de Kootenay des roches de l'ancienne marge nord-américaine sont sujets à discussion. New U–Pb ages and K–Ar dates, primarily for rocks proximal to mineral occurrences in the Fawnie Range of central British Columbia, document latest Cretaceous (ca. 74–66 Ma) continental-arc igneous activity and date associated base and precious metal mineralization. U–Pb ages of ca. 73–69 Ma for the Capoose pluton and hypabyssal to extrusive garnet rhyolites at the Capoose prospect demonstrate a latest Cretaceous age for mineralization and a likely plutonic source for mineralizing fluids. A U–Pb age of ca. 67 Ma for a late mineralized felsic dyke and two K–Ar dates (ca. 70 and 68 Ma) for hornfelsed Jurassic volcanic rocks at the Blackwater–Davidson prospect constrain a latest Cretaceous age for mineralization. A U–Pb age of ca. 74 Ma for a fine grained diorite sill that cuts a significant epithermal gold vein at the Tsacha prospect places a minimum age on mineralization at this probable Jura-Cretaceous deposit and documents latest Cretaceous magmatism. Latest Cretaceous K–Ar dates are reported for an andesite flow adjacent to the Eocene Holy Cross deposit (ca. 66 Ma), about 35 km north of the Fawnie Range, and a Kasalka Group rhyolite (ca. 68 Ma) exposed near the western margin of the Nechako Plateau. Latest Cretaceous magmatism and mineralization in the Fawnie Range represent the waning stages of Bulkley suite magmatism and porphyry-style mineralization, which was concentrated along the western margin of the Nechako Plateau at circa 88–70 Ma. The Quaternary stratigraphy of the Nechako River – Cheslatta Lake area of central British Columbia is described and interpreted to reconstruct the late Quaternary history of the region. Exposures of glacial and nonglacial sediments deposited prior to the last glaciation (Fraser) are limited to three sites. Pollen assemblages from pre-Fraser nonglacial sediments at two of these sites reveal forested conditions around 39 000 BP. During the advance phase of the Fraser Glaciation, glacial lakes were ponded when trunk glaciers blocked some tributary valleys. Early in the glaciation, the drainage was free in easterly draining valleys. Subsequently, the easterly drainage was blocked either locally by sediments and ice or as a result of impoundment of the Fraser River and its tributaries east of the study area. Ice generally moved east and northeast from accumulation zones in the Coast Mountains. Ice flow was influenced by topography. Major late-glacial lakes developed in the Nechako River valley and the Knewstubb Lake region because potential drainage routes were blocked by ice.La stratigraphie du Quaternaire de la région de la rivière Nechako et du lac Cheslatta sise au centre de la Colombie Britannique est décrite et interprétée dans le but de reconstruire l'histoire du Quaternaire tardif de cette région. Climate change poses a significant threat to Arctic freshwater biodiversity, but impacts depend upon the strength of organism response to climate‐related drivers. Currently, there is insufficient knowledge about Arctic freshwater biodiversity patterns to guide assessment, prediction, and management of biodiversity change.As part of the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program's first freshwater assessment, we evaluated diversity of diatoms, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish in North American Arctic rivers. Alpha diversity was assessed in relation to temperature, water chemistry, bedrock geology, and glaciation history to identify important environmental correlates. Biotic composition was compared among groups to evaluate response to environmental gradients.Macroinvertebrate α‐diversity declined strongly with increasing latitude from 48°N to 82°N, whereas diatom and fish diversity peaked around 70°N without a clear latitudinal decline. Macroinvertebrate diversity was significantly positively related to air temperature. Diatom diversity was related to bedrock geology and temperature, whereas fish diversity was related to glaciation history.Fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages differed between sites in western Canada, where invertebrate composition was more variable, and Alaska, where fish composition was more variable. In sites with both diatom and macroinvertebrate data, diatom composition was distinct in Alaska, where richness was highest in former glacial refugia. Macroinvertebrate composition was distinct in lowest‐latitude eastern and high‐latitude western Canadian sites where temperature was highest.Temperature, precipitation, geology, calcium, and substrate size were important environmental correlates for diatoms and macroinvertebrates, although the relative importance of each correlate differed. Diatom taxa were most strongly associated with water chemistry, whereas benthic invertebrate composition related most strongly to precipitation and temperature.This large‐scale study provides the most substantial integration and analysis of river diatom, macroinvertebrate, and fish data from the North American Arctic to date. Findings suggest that macroinvertebrates will show the strongest response to climate‐related shifts in temperature, whereas diatoms and fish are more likely to respond to climate‐induced shifts in nutrients and hydraulic connectivity. However, significant gaps in data coverage limited our ability to reliably evaluate spatial patterns and detect change. This thematic issue is in memory of Thomas Kurtis Kyser who died tragically in 2017. Kurt's contribution to our understanding of the geochemistry of uranium deposits and the application of stable and radiogenic isotope studies to uranium ore systems is incalculable. His research on uranium deposits included the world-class unconformity-related uranium deposits from Canada, Australia, and Russia, and several other major types of uranium deposits worldwide such as Na-metasomatic deposit of Kurupung (Guyana) and Valhalla (Australia), volcanic-hosted deposits of Peru (Macusani), and vein-type uranium deposits from Beaverlodge district (Canada). He was the first to develop methods to use secondary dispersion of pathfinder elements to vector towards deeply buried uranium ore systems. These new geochemical and isotopic approaches are still successfully applied today. Kurt has been a pioneer in applying stable isotopic systems to characterize the paleofluid events associated with ore systems and to distinguish between barren and mineralized fluid pathways. Kurt was a prolific author with over 400 publications and over a hundred articles on uranium deposits. Kurt wrote three short courses for the Mineralogical Association of Canada dedicated to uranium deposits: Fluids and Basin Evolution (2000), Recent and not-so-Recent Developments in Uranium Deposits and Implications for Exploration (2008, in partnership with SGA), and Geology and Geochemistry of Uranium and Thorium Deposits (2015). However, his true legacy is the large number of undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, and researchers that he taught, supervised, and mentored; most of whom are now working in industry, academia, and government institutions across the globe. Although alkalic porphyry Au--Cu deposits are much less common than their calc-alkalic counterparts, they represent attractive exploration targets both due to their occurrence as, locally concealed, clusters and their high Au contents. In this paper, the geology of the Mt. Milligan Au--Cu deposit, Canada, and its geophysical footprint on magnetic and AEM data is used as a case-study for the exploration and discovery of concealed alkalic porphyry Au--Cu deposits. The Cole-Cole parameters in the AEM data are extracted using an improved Airborne Induced Polarization (AIP) mapping algorithm. We propose that the subtle electromagnetic signatures of disseminated sulfides around the intrusive porphyry stocks at Mt. Milligan could be mapped by the m τ product, where m is AIP apparent chargeability, and τ the Cole-Cole time-constant, provided that the depths of the alteration zone does not exceed 75 m. The product is called Tau-Scaled Chargeability or TSC. In order to improve the exploration success in the search for concealed alkalic porphyry Au--Cu deposits, we propose to: (1) concentrate the exploration on known and well-endowed mineral districts; and (2) apply innovative digital data-processing techniques capable of extracting weak and subtle signatures from airborne geophysical data and, subsequently, to utilize DCIP ground surveys in the follow-up of anomalies, ideally in combination with enzyme-leach soil sampling. • Alkalic porphyry Au-Cu deposits are attractive exploration targets due to their high Au contents. • They occur in clusters, typically above fractionating magma chambers in the upper crust. • AIP mapping can define pyrite halos around concealed intrusive stocks at Mt. Understanding Hadean (>4 Ga) Earth requires knowledge of its crust. The composition of the crust and volatiles migrating through it directly influence the makeup of the atmosphere, the composition of seawater, and nutrient availability. Despite its importance, there is little known and less agreed upon regarding the nature of the Hadean crust. By analyzing the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of apatite inclusions in Archean zircons from Nuvvuagittuq, Canada, we show that its protolith had formed a high (>1) Rb/Sr ratio reservoir by at least 4.2 Ga. This result implies that the early crust had a broad range of igneous rocks, extending from mafic to highly silicic compositions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salt marshes are highly effective carbon (C) sinks and have higher rates of soil C burial (per square meter) than terrestrial ecosystems. Marsh reclamation and anthropogenic impacts, however, have resulted in extensive losses of salt marshes. Restoration of marshes drained and “reclaimed” for agriculture (referred to in Canada as dykelands) and degraded marshes can generate C credits, but only if C burial is reliably quantified. To date, studies reporting on C burial rates have been limited primarily to restored marshes which are more than 10 years old. Here we report on a study which assessed C burial six years after the return of tidal flooding to a section of dykeland in Aulac, New Brunswick on Canada’s Bay of Fundy. The C burial rate in the restored marsh averaged 1 329 g C m-2 yr-1, more than five times the rate reported for a nearby mature marsh. Carbon density in the recovering marsh was relatively consistent with depth and although salt marsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) became established in 2012, the bulk of the C in the new marsh deposit is assumed to be allochthonous. Financial constraints are a barrier to marsh restoration projects and C markets could provide a considerable source of funding for restoration work in the future. For marsh restoration projects to be recognized in C crediting systems, however, it must also be demonstrated that the allochthonous C would not otherwise have been sequestered; the potential for this is discussed. Coiled tubing corrosion was investigated for 16 field water samples (S5 to S20) from a Canadian shale gas field. Weight loss corrosion rates of carbon steel beads incubated with these field water samples averaged 0.2 mm/yr, but injection water sample S19 had 1.25±0.07 mm/yr. S19 had a most probable number of zero acid-producing bacteria and incubation of S19 with carbon steel beads or coupons did not lead to big changes in microbial community composition. In contrast other field water samples had most probable numbers of APB of 102/mL to 107/mL and incubation of these field water samples with carbon steel beads or coupons often gave large changes in microbial community composition. HPLC analysis indicated that all field water samples had elevated concentrations of bromide (average 1.6 mM), which may be derived from bronopol, which was used as a biocide. S19 had the highest bromide concentration (4.2 mM) and was the only water sample with a high concentration of active bronopol (13.8 mM, 2760 ppm). Corrosion rates increased linearly with bronopol concentration, as determined by weight loss of carbon steel beads, for experiments with S19, with filtered S19 and with bronopol dissolved in defined medium. This indicated that the high corrosion rate found for S19 was due to its high bronopol concentration. The corrosion rate of coiled tubing coupons also increased linearly with bronopol concentration as determined by electrochemical methods. Profilometry measurements also showed formation of multiple pits on the surface of coiled tubing coupon with an average pit depth of 60 μm after 1 week of incubation with 1 mM bronopol. At the recommended dosage of 100 ppm the corrosiveness of bronopol towards carbon steel beads was modest (0.011 mm/yr). Higher concentrations, resulting if biocide is added repeatedly as commonly done in shale gas operations, are more corrosive and should be avoided. Overdosing may be avoided by assaying the presence of residual biocide by HPLC, rather than by assaying the presence of residual surviving bacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Current models for unconformity-associated uranium deposits predict fluid flow and ore deposition along reactivated faults in >1.76 Ga basement beneath Mesoproterozoic siliciclastic basins. In frontier regions such as the Thelon Basin in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut, little is known about the sub-basin distribution of units and structures, making exploration targeting very tenuous. We constructed a geological map of the basement beneath the unconformity by extrapolating exposed features into the subsurface. The new map is constrained by detailed geological, geophysical, and rock property observations of outcrops adjacent to the basin and by aeromagnetic and gravity data over the geophysically transparent sedimentary basin. From rock property measurements, it is clear that the diverse magnetic and density characteristics of major rock packages provide quantitative three-dimensional constraints. Gravity profiles forward modelled in four cross sections define broad synforms of the Amer Belt and Archean volcanic rocks that are consistent with the structural style outside the basin. Major lithotectonic entities beneath the unconformity include: supracrustal rocks of the Archean Woodburn Lake group and Marjorie Hills meta sedimentary gneiss and associated mixed granitoid and amphibolitic gneiss; the Amer Mylonite Zone and inferred mafic intrusions oriented parallel and sub-parallel; other igneous intrusions of 2.6 Ga, 1.83 Ga, and 1.75 Ga vintage; and the <2.3 Ga to >1.84 Ga Amer Group. Four main brittle regional fault arrays (040°-060°, 075°-90°, 120°, and 150°) controlled development and preservation of the basin. The reactivated intersections of such faults along fertile basement units such as the Rumble assemblage, Marjorie Hills assemblage, Nueltin igneous rocks, and Pitz formation are the best targets for uranium exploration. Seasonal distribution of adult Atlantic sturgeon was examined using pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) and ultrasonic transmitters deployed in the Saint John River, New Brunswick, Canada. Seven MK10 PSATs programmed for release in June 2012 and seven MiniPAT PSATs programmed for release in February and April 2013 were deployed in August 2011 and 2012, respectively. Eleven of 14 PSATs surfaced and transmitted depth and temperature data archived for the duration of their deployment (121–302 days). Among these eleven PSATs, five were recovered and 15-sec archival data was downloaded. Following exit from the Saint John River in the fall, tagged fish occupied a mean monthly depth of 76.3–81.6 m at temperatures as low as 4.9˚C throughout the winter before returning to shallower areas in the spring. The majority of ultrasonic detections occurred in the Bay of Fundy, but fish were detected as far as Riviere Saint-Jean, Quebec, approximately 1500 km from the Bay of Fundy (representing long-distance migratory rates of up to 44 km/day). All PSATs were first detected in the Bay of Fundy. Tags that released in February and April were found 5–21 km offshore of the Saint John Harbour, while tags that released in June were first detected in near shore areas throughout the Bay of Fundy. The substrate at winter tag release locations (estimated from backward numerical particle-tracking experiments) consisted primarily of moraines and postglacial mud substrate with low backscatter strength, indicative of soft or smooth seabed. Based on the proximity of winter tag release locations, the consistent depths observed between fish, and previous research, it is suspected that a winter aggregation exists in the Bay of Fundy. The accuracy of nine solar radiation ( R) estimation models and their effects on reference evapotranspiration ( ET) were evaluated using data from eight meteorological stations in Canada. The R estimation models were FAO recommended Angstrom-Prescott (A-P) coefficients, locally calibrated A-P coefficients, Hargreaves and Samani (H-S) (1982), Annandale et al., (2002), Allen (1995), Self-Calibrating (S-C, Allen, ), Samani (2000), Mahmood and Hubbard (M-H) (2002), and Bristow and Campbell (B-C) (1984). The estimated R values were then compared to measured R to check the appropriateness of these models at the study locations. Based on root mean square error (RMSE), mean bias error (MBE) and modelling efficiency (ME) ranking, calibrated A-P coefficients performed better than all other methods. The calibrated H-S method (using new K 0.15) estimated R more accurately than FAO-56 recommended A-P in Elora, and Winnipeg. The RMSE of the calibrated H-S method ranged between 1-6% and the RMSE of the calibrated and FAO recommended Angstrom-Prescott (A-P) methods ranged between 1-9%. The models with the least accuracy at the eight locations are the Mahmood & Hubbard (2002) and Self-Calibrating models. In this article, ground motions recorded on rock sites in eastern Canada are studied in order to characterize their vertical acceleration components. Emphasis is placed on the sensitivity of vertical-to-horizontal spectral ratios to: (i) inter-component intensity correlations and (ii) the use of geometric mean horizontal components at each site instead of considering them individually. Four different definitions of horizontal components are investigated. Vertical-to-horizontal spectral ratios are compared with the findings of other researchers. Background: Up to 150 million North Americans currently use a groundwater system as their principal drinking water source. These systems are a potential source of exposure to enteric pathogens, contributing to the burden of waterborne disease. Waterborne disease outbreaks have been associated with US and Canadian groundwater systems over the past two decades. However, to date, this literature has not been reviewed in a comprehensive manner. Methods and Principal Findings: A combined review and pooled-analysis approach was used to investigate groundwater contamination in Canada and the US from 1990 to 2013; fifty-five studies met eligibility criteria. Four study types were identified. It was found that study location affects study design, sample rate and studied pathogen category. Approximately 15% (316/2210) of samples from Canadian and US groundwater sources were positive for enteric pathogens, with no difference observed based on system type. Knowledge gaps exist, particularly in exposure assessment for attributing disease to groundwater supplies. Furthermore, there is a lack of consistency in risk factor reporting (local hydrogeology, well type, well use, etc). The widespread use of fecal indicator organisms in reported studies does not inform the assessment of human health risks associated with groundwater supplies. Conclusions: This review illustrates how groundwater study design and location are critical for subsequent data interpretation and use. Knowledge gaps exist related to data on bacterial, viral and protozoan pathogen prevalence in Canadian and US groundwater systems, as well as a need for standardized approaches for reporting study design and results. Fecal indicators are examined as a surrogate for health risk assessments; caution is advised in their widespread use. Study findings may be useful during suspected waterborne outbreaks linked with a groundwater supply to identify the likely etiological agent and potential transport pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to better constrain the utility of multispectral datasets in the characterization of surface materials, Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data were evaluated in the discrimination of geological classes in the Cape Smith Belt of Quebec, a greenstone belt that hosts Early Proterozoic units including those of the Purtuniq ophiolite. Ground-based measurements collected for the study area highlight the importance of chemical alteration in controlling the reflectance properties of key geological classes. The spatial distribution of exposed lithologies in the study area was determined through (1) image classification using a feedforward backpropagation neural network classifier; and (2) generation of fraction images for spectral end members using a linear unmixing algorithm and ground reflectance data. Despite some shortcomings, the database of surface cover generated by the neural network classifier is a useful representation of the spatial distribution of exposed geological materials in the study area, with an overall agreement with ground truth of 87.7%. In contrast, the fraction images generated through unmixing are poor representations of ground truth for several key lithological classes. These results underscore both the considerable utility and marked limitations of Landsat TM data in the mapping of igneous and metamorphic lithologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Paleoproterozoic (Statherian) Thelon Basin is located in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield, formed following the Trans-Hudson Orogeny. Basin formation followed an interval of felsic volcanism and weathering of underlying bedrock. The diagenetic evolution of the Thelon lasted about one billion years and was punctuated by fluid movement influenced by tectonic events. Early quartz cements formed in well-sorted, quartz-rich facies during diagenetic stage 1; fluids in which these overgrowths formed had δ18O values near 0‰ (Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water). Uranium-rich apatite cement (P1) also formed during diagenetic stage 1 indicating that oxygenated, uranium-bearing pore water was present in the basin early in its diagenetic history. Syntaxial quartz cement (Q1) formed in water with δ18O from −4 to −0.8‰ in diagenetic stage 2. Diagenetic stage 3 occurred when the Thelon Formation was at ca. 5 km depth, and was marked by extensive illitization, alteration of detrital grains, and uranium mineralization. Basin-wide, illite crystallized at ∼200 °C by fluids with δ18O values of 5–9‰ and δ D values of −60 to −31‰, consistent with evolved basinal brines. Tectonism caused by the accretion of Nena at ca. 1600 Ma may have provided the mechanism for brine movement during deep burial. Diagenetic stage 4 is associated with fracturing and emplacement of mafic dikes at ca. 1300 Ma, quartz cement (Q3) in fractures and vugs, further illitization, and recrystallization of uraninite (U2). Q3 cements have fluid inclusions that suggest variable salinities, δ18O values of 1.5–9‰, and δ D values of −97 to −83‰ for stage 4 brines. K-feldspar and Mg-chlorite formed during diagenetic stage 5 at ca. 1000 Ma in upper stratigraphic sequences, and in the west. These phases precipitated from low-temperature, isotopically distinct fluids. Their distribution indicates that the basin hydrostratigraphy remained partitioned for >600 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nares Strait separating Greenland and northernmost Canada is floored by continental crust. Most palaeogeographic reconstructions of Laurentia and the North Atlantic region model the seaway as the site of massive sinistral strike–slip and/or compression/transpression, subduction and collision, the supposed manifestations of the hypothetical Wegener Fault. However, these reconstructions fail to take into account the bedrock geology that represents within-plate evolution. Both sides of Smith Sound, the southernmost part of Nares Strait, expose the same early Proterozoic to early Palaeozoic assemblages that are unaffected by seaway-related tectonism or thermal activity. Smith Sound is an intact crustal block or `linchpin' demonstrating that there was no independent Greenland plate. North-west Greenland was not a leading plate margin neither was Nares Strait the site of the plate boundary between Greenland and North America. The Wegener Fault does not exist. The Smith Sound linchpin constitutes a key constraint that must be respected in any palaeogeographic reconstruction of the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
